Almost there.

This was one of two mantras that kept Peach’s feet moving, even as dawn broke into day and faded back into dusk, even as her every muscle cried out for reprieve. Almost there. Just a bit further and then she could rest. Almost there. Just a bit more, then she could eat as much cake and drink as much lemon balm tea as she could stomach. She could embrace her friends, she could lather herself in fruity-floral suds beneath the rush of hot water, she could stand out on her balcony and watch her people go on about their business while she went about hers. Life could go back to normal.

The hand within hers went slack and pulled her back into the present. Right away she tightened her grasp and planted her soles as firmly to the ground as she could manage, as if she could withstand any additional burden. But Mario didn’t stumble or black out; his eyes were fixed on a dot just over the horizon, elevated high above the towering fungi surrounding them, too distant to make out its shape but close enough to cast its light into the darkness.

“Almost there.” His voice was weak, and the smile he tried giving Peach looked more like a grimace, but determination still burned hot in his eyes. One last push. One last push, and they’d be home.

The forest around them shifted and spun, each step sending jolts of nauseating pain to her head, and beside her she could hear Mario’s steps faltering. If she had her wits about her, Peach would have suggested they stop right here, in the relative safety of the forest’s edge, or at least make it to the inn on the outskirts of town. The castle would still be there come morning. Right now, she needed him to focus on resting and not dying.

But some nagging voice deep within her overrode all other senses. That voice told her that, if they stopped now, they’d never get back up — he’d never get back up. She had long since pumped every ounce of magic she could muster into his body just to revive him, just to keep him in one piece until they made it back, and even then, she knew it wasn’t enough to last. They’d already cheated fate once. Next time they might not be so lucky. It was surely a miracle that they’d made it this far.

And what would be the point in making it home if he didn’t make it with her?

Peach swallowed uneasily. She truly had no more to give. That wouldn’t stop her from giving it all to him anyway.

Closing her eyes to block out her dizzying surroundings, she grit her teeth and summoned what little was left from some well deep within her chest, a well she knew couldn’t be replenished once it had been spent. Her very own lifeforce. That force couldn’t travel fast enough; it trickled through her like a broken tap, constricted her lungs and stiffened her muscles and amplified every last unpleasant sensation in her body, and she dug her nails into Mario’s skin to make certain he received every last bit of it.

Infuriatingly slow though it was, she knew it was working. His footsteps gradually grew steadier, quicker, and she let herself follow him blindly, until at last the grass beneath their feet gave way to a sturdier path. Their footsteps clacked against cobblestones, echoing into an empty, sleeping town.

Or maybe just his footsteps. Peach couldn’t be sure that she was walking any longer. The sting of open blisters on her feet faded into a pillowy nothing, as did the jolts of pain that kept her awake and moving, yet the wherewithal to consider this a relief — or to consider anything, really — was far from her grasp. She tried to open her eyes, gauge how much farther they had to go, but all she could see was darkness. Her well was running dry.

“Almost.” His voice sounded so far away. Garbled, like she was hearing it from beneath the murky depths of some dark lake. Perhaps that was where she was: drowning, drifting aimlessly beneath the undertow as it all faded away, every sound, every sensation, every last proof of life but Mario’s hand in hers.

And then even that was gone, her last anchor to the realm of the living, and Peach’s body went weightless— until some unseen force knocked air back into her lungs, slammed her spirit back into her body, and she gasped from the shock of reawakening.

Darkness. Darkness and a few distorted shapes in shades of blue and purple and black, and maybe a few pinpoints of light in the distance. Somewhere beside or beneath her, she heard Mario grunt, and she let herself be jostled about as that unseen force righted her leaden body. It was only when he pulled her against his side, his arm secure around her waist, that Peach realized her saving force was none other than him.

“Stay with me.” The words came out strained and desperate, and with his opposite hand, he guided Peach’s arm over and behind his head. “We’re almost… just a little further, Princess. Come on.”

He hauled her forward a few steps before she was able to regain her footing, and she slumped against him as she redistributed her weight, her cheek just an inch or two from the top of his head. He took hold of the hand slung over his shoulder, his fingers fumbling to secure her grasp. “That’s it. Come on. Almost.”

Peach numbly searched within herself once more as they dragged each other forward, willing that trickle of magic to return, just a bit longer, just a bit more. Just until he was safe. But her focus was hampered by her own lightheadedness, a distant cacophony that she swore was growing louder, those pinpoints of light drawing closer and closer and closer…

“Princess!”

She knew that voice. She knew the voices that accompanied it. The familiar call of her commander, only the second friendly voice she’d heard in three months’ time, followed by the equally relieved and concerned shouts of the guards he led—

Her knees buckled.

She felt Mario lean into her as her legs failed, but any further efforts at keeping her upright were futile. He succeeded only in collapsing to the cobblestone first and breaking her fall with his body.

He cried out when he hit the ground, softly enough that only Peach could hear, and she couldn’t tell if it was from pain or relief.

By the time Peach managed to untangle herself from Mario’s arm and pull herself to her knees, chaos cornered her from every angle. A blanket was thrown over her shoulders. A million questions were thrown her way, stupid questions with obvious answers like Are you okay? Are you hurt? Are you hungry?. She could see more clearly now, fuzzy images of spotted caps and beady eyes and halberds, but darkness still lurked in her peripheral, ever encroaching.

Mario remained doubled over in the street, his huddled form shuddering violently, his breath coming in uneven gasps. Looking down, she watched as some substance dripped onto the stones beneath him, dark and shining. One drop. Two, three, four drops. Wounds that had seeped blood their entire journey now flowed freely, unhindered by her magic.

Almost there.

“Get him to the infirmary right away.” She heard her own voice as though listening through foreign ears, stronger and steadier than the half-dead husk it came from. “He’s gravely injured.”

The beginnings of a protest sputtered past Mario’s lips, something like “Nnuh— P— Peach—” . If not for her single minded focus on remaining conscious until she saw him to safety, she might have cried — even in complete ruin, his first concern was her. 

With each pump of her heart, her vision pulsed in and out of focus. Just a bit longer. Just until she knew he would be okay. 

A quartet of Toads in foot soldiers’ armor broke through bearing a simple stretcher, a tight-woven net between two poles, and she motioned for them to lay it down beside Mario. Townsfolk had begun peeking out from their houses and spilling into the streets, and a handful of guards posted themselves around the rest to keep them at bay, shouting orders to get back, give them space, make way for the exhausted Princess and her hero.

My hero.

In spite of his increasingly incoherent and weak protests, Mario was urged onto his side by the makeshift medics, onto the stretcher, and he curled heavily into himself with a soft groan. Beneath the layer of dirt and blood it had accumulated, his face was unnaturally pale. It stood out against the darkness like a full moon in a starless sky.

But in spite of the pain, in spite of the dizziness, in spite of the rapidly slipping waking world, he managed to peek his eyes open and find her. The fire in them had cooled and left their once brilliant blue glassy and opaque. Yet he managed to smile; not a forced smile, a well-meaning but empty effort to lift her spirits, but a soft and small and achingly real smile, the sort that told her everything would be alright.

We made it.

“Your Highness…?”

Peach’s vision pulsed once more, and this time, it never went back into focus.

“Your Highness!”

Her hero’s smile burned itself into her brain like the dying light of a supernova as her body went weightless once more, and then the darkness claimed her. No unseen force was present to save her this time, but that, she decided with her last coherent thought, was quite alright.

UPDATE: there is no more one fic a day requirement! it’s simply whoever reblogs the most hidden gems this year wins!

so it’s come to my attention (through this post and others) that a lot of writers’ note counts have been dwindling as of late, whether on tumblr or ao3.

i wanna try to help remedy this by reblogging as many under-appreciated fics as i can throughout the entire year of 2021 as a way to sort of re-boost writer morale :)

WHY hidden gems? there’s just too much good stuff out there that gets lost and, as @girl-next-door-writes so eloquently puts it, “hidden in the tumblr fuckery”, which is both incredibly discouraging for writers and also unfortunate for readers in search of more amazing fics!

WHO can join? anyone! readers, writers, big blogs, small blogs!

WHAT can you reblog? any fic that you believe deserves more love! whatever fandom you like, new or old fics, doesn’t matter. i don’t want to define ‘under-appreciated’ or ‘underrated’ with a set numerical value because it can be different for everyone (a very popular writer can have one fic that does less well than the rest of their work, though it may still have over a hundred notes, some fics only get likes and no feedback, sometimes writers develop a huge following over time but their older fics still lack love, etc.) but as a general cue, i will personally be trying to focus on fics with less than 200 notes, and anything under 100 notes will be tagged ‘underrated af’ lol. 

- writers, you may also reblog one of your own fics (what you believe to be your most underrated piece) if you want! please use the tag ‘my own hidden gem’ if you choose to do so, mostly cause i’m super curious 😉

But you’re not gonna know until you get there

But fuck that, I’m not letting yall trip facefirst into this shit unprepared. 

You might feel like nobody cares about you, about your book, about anything. 

You may feel like you’ll never write anything again 

You may feel like what you have written is a shitty, shitty pile of steaming garbage and you are doomed to die cold and alone in the night

You may miss the world and the characters and feel like they’ve died and taken a part of you with them

You may feel a billion different shitty things and it sucks so bad my friends

You just did like several solid months of stressful shit at the very least. 

You are a rubber band and you have just been stretched to the limit and unleashed against the unforgiving back of the head of reality by some dumb fuck kid who’s supposed to be paying attention in class. 

But look at me: It's not gonna be here forever

There are always people who care for real

You will write again and it will be awesome

What you wrote is awesome, no matter how many imperfections you may see in it right now. 

The world and characters are with you always. There is literally nothing stopping you from continuing to write shit with them. or even just daydreaming shit. They are yours and the world cannot take them from you. 

You will get through this, it may take a week, or a month, or longer and it may be shitty that whole time 

but it will end. And you’ll make it through. 

My advice?: 

Get a support system

Tell them that this is a thing

Have them check in on you 

Don’t try to do this alone because you don’t have to. 

It's Difficult to Find Information

Remember that part where I talked about how everyone wants to horn in on your hard work?

It is entirely possible that I’m just shit at researching but all of the videos, articles, and free PDFs that I found fell into one or both of these categories: 

Either they’re from a publishing company that wants to discourage you from self-publishing so that they can publish your book for you.

I know. It’s a midsized-city mayor’s job. Not up to the standards of talent which you, a successful foreigner possess. Think about it, my dear Obama – instead of getting US$400,000 annually as you did as U.S. President, you will receive USD 1.31M as mayor, oops, sorry, prime minister of the empire of singapore, which also includes our large islands of Ubin, Sentosa and many smaller ones. A much smaller job it may be but pays much more. Gee, that’s everybody’s dream. Should you accept this mission, Mr. Obama, you will be president and prime minister. And for the first time in our short political history, we will have a real president, with real powers! And a really qualified person for it to boot! It will be a real job too! And the annual pay of USD 1.15M for the president of singapore will go on top of what you will get as prime minister. How do you like this double whammy, my president cum prime minister?

And Michelle? Oh yeah, the charming and soooo intelligent Mrs. Obama. Well, we are not unkind as the Americans were to her during your two terms as U.S. president. It must have been so hard on Mrs. Obama. All that immense talent unused, just being First Lady-like. She was not only a successful lawyer before, but also a terrific administrator and human being, especially in her support for the poor! Just like you with human rights and all, and that Nobel Peace Prize. Way to go, Brother.

As I said, we are not unkind. There’s a job too here for Mrs. Obama. But I don’t want to insult her. It’s way below her skills set. And I really don’t know what it pays. No one except the incumbent seems to know. But I am guessing it pays much, much better than your 2-in-1. Impressed? Yes, sir. It’s a public job. I know, but that’s a fact – no one knows what this job pays. Again, I am not sure how Michelle will feel about this, but at least it’s a Management job! And you know what, she will really have a chance to do what she likes – helping us poor folks here. The job? Why, the head of Temasek, our sovereign wealth fund. I am confident Michelle will do a fine job of stretching the returns on our life-long savings. And if she does that, why, she will get a huge bonus too! Except, I don’t know what the amount is. No one knows. But I know it’s huge!

Hold on. I’m not done, sir. Now since you will be the prez-pm, do we really need to pretend anymore who really is the de facto defense minister? Yes, sir. The US. Commander, Indo-Pacific Command is our man or woman! He or she’s been watching over the region like a hawk since the end of World War Two. He or she decides who can and cannot play in the malacca straits and south-china sea and who needs more beautiful and costly toys, like missiles, fighter jets and tanks to keep up with the Joneses. So why not just officially declare him or her as our defence minister? And besides, he or she’s for real - been in a real combat, and not once mind you. So he or she really understands military doctrine first hand, unlike the paper-bearing generals in our midst. So really, what we are proposing here is to scrap the whole defence forces of singapore, starting from the top. Let’s de-layer that, as they like to say in a corporate “right-sizing” exercise. Our real defence forces since WW2 had always been the U.S. 7th Fleet. No one messes with them. By removing the redundancies or duplications in our defence posture, we save over $15 billion annually. Wow! And the beauty of this is our idealistic youth can now forego the two years of enforced brainwashing known as national service. They can be free to pursue their dreams and keep their heads unsanitized, like any normal human being. 

And something else, with the U.S. Commander, Indo-Pacific heading up defense, do we really have to go on pretending too that we have a foreign policy? You know of course, we don’t have one. It’s always been the U.S. foreign policy. So really, we can also scrap the foreign ministry and save a few more billions there. The U.S. Commander, Indo-Pacific Command will also be our foreign minister. He or she speaks with unmatched authority. Try messing with him or her!

One other thing, with Michelle and you in charge, we need not now spend zillions to attract investments and tourists with all the high-powered promotional visits abroad by the folks in the Economic Development and Tourism Boards. Your world-class stature is more than enough to get the dollars into the city. Everyone loves and wants to rub shoulders with both of you. And your humility and confidence in your rule. Man, those media folks here will cotton to you the way a bee does to honey. No more libel suits and other fear-mongering stunts. Instead, we finally will get to say publicly what we have always said privately. Ain’t that sweet, Bro? A real honest and passionate society instead of a hypocritical or fake one. The world will beat a path to our doorstep. You are my man!

One final thing, Bro. You will need a political party to support you. Have I got a name for you. Ready? It’s Real Action Party (RAP). For a real caring and sensitive guy like you. Huh? Oh them. I can’t remember what is the name of the current party as I don’t subscribe to the local msm. But I hear in the coffeeshops among the Ah Pehs, that party’s unofficial name is NAP. I think it stands for No Action Party, although I cannot be sure. Best you check with your CIA folks in Langley, ok? They know more than we do about this city. In fact, they know more about anything, including nothing, than anyone else in this world. Why, just ask Prez Trump! He’s been twittering non-stop about it since he came on board.

Well Sir Obama, I do hope Michelle and you find this all very fascinating. I have one final surprise. Should you accept this mission, you will not be living in hardship as many expats do when they work abroad in 3rd and 4th world countries. No sirree. We have more class than that. Michelle, you and your lovely children will be housed in the Istana or Palace. That’s not equivalent to your White House, which is just a house after all. No sir. The Istana is much fancier! This is a huge palace centered over 100 acres right dab in the middle of land-scarce singapore city. Why, your White House is tiny at just 18 acres, compared to the Istana. Pathetic really. And y’all Americans always think you have the bestest of everything! Now we here, we know how to take care of our own. Everything beyond world class – the pay, lodgings, bonus, very long or permanent job tenures for public officials, etc. And you know what? We just love foreign talents like Michelle and you. We know you will like it here, although the jobs for both of you are far below your skills set. But hey! It’s the thought that matters right?

“Oh wow hi jury! So as you probably have heard by now I’m officially in the Final 2 for Season 9 because my dear alliance-mate Alyssa took me to the end. And you heard that correctly, Alyssa and I have been in a final 2 alliance called #SagAttack since Day 2, merely 3 hours before we created a Final 3 alliance with James called the Unholy Trinity. This game has 100% been a whirlwind for me and I nearly didn’t even apply when Nick asked me to but I am 10000% glad I did because I was able to meet amazing people during this game who I would love to talk to after this is all over, and as an additional note, this has hands down been my favorite game I’ve been able to take part of. As you all maybe remember if you’re a geek like I am about IOS, I got 12th place in Lake Victoria after a messy journey of confrontation, petty laughing, and flushing out other people’s idols. For Season 9, I was one of the 6 returnees for this game. With Madison and I being the 2 returnees for the Gegoochel tribe. Coming into the game I knew I had a target on my back because I was a returnee and you can’t deny that the returnees weren’t targeted when you had Nic and Jacob leaving back to back and Chrissa not even making merge. The last time I played an ORG I was controversial and messy and didn’t really love the person who I was becoming and took the summer off and I’m glad I did because I found out a lot of stuff about me that explained my actions thanks to many many many doctors appointments. I wanted to be calm and be better and I wanted to do such a thing. So I hope this game shows the growth of who I am now than the person I was back in April/May. I would like to treat this jury questioning segment as a way for us to all check each others notes and perspectives on how this game was played rather than saying one was wrong and one was right. “Hi guys! I wanted to make a video for you all but after 10 tries where I was unsatisfied I think it might be impossible. Thank you for giving me the amazing opportunity to play this game with you all! I was able to get to know you all personally as well as in game for which I’m very very thankful. Having played a game with some of you has definitely made a lot of VLs more fun for me. Coming into this game, I had gotten voted out very early from Kilimanjaro for being seen as a social and physical threat as well as someone who had formed alliances early and was unwilling to move on those. I kind of took these weaknesses and decided coming into this game that I would try to play a game where I could work with everyone to accomplish what we both saw as best for our games. In considering contestants during my time in the jury I looked at four things: Social Game, Strategic Game, Physical Game, and Jury Management. I want to go into a brief summary of all of them for you so that you can have a good idea of what my game was about. I thought my social game was one of the things that really helped me throughout this game. Being able to speak with all of you and form connections made it so that I could form a working relationship on an already-established bond of friendship. Although I was seen as someone who kept many secrets, I was also seen as someone who was very like-able (via the Touchy Subjects I won), which was sort of exactly what I was going for. I was able to establish enough trust with people to have NO votes on me this season but still be able to work under the radar. Through the relationships I made, I was able to know what was going on in the game at all times and on both “sides.” Being able to have this information from my social game was CRUCIAL to my strategic game. Having all of the information to make the best decisions I could was the greatest thing I could do for myself. I was able to form long-lasting bonds very early in the game which later helped me to make moves and know that people would be on my side for certain votes that were crucial to my path to the end of this game. I truly believe every decision I made throughout this game was the right one to get me here to final tribal council. My physical game was also a strong aspect of my gameplay. Although the statistics only show that I won one immunity challenge, there was much more than that. Early on in Geogoochel I proved myself as a hard worker in the URL/puzzle challenge, which helped me to be the first person from my tribe voted into Het Keker. The advantage I was given was to allow someone from Moelen to go to Het Keker. This helped me establish a connection very early on with Autumn, who I worked very closely with throughout the game. I was also able to get a lot of points for my unmerge tribe in the video challenge, which solidified my vote into Het Keker where I won an advantage in any challenge in the game. My hard work in the “I cast a spell at ____” challenge allowed me to get myself into Het Keker AGAIN where I won an immunity idol to keep myself safe. My physical game very much allowed me to take advantage of the Het Keker system and be the person who entered Het Keker the most. On top of this, my win in the final immunity challenge allowed me to solidify my entrance into final tribal council and decide who I would be facing, which I believe was one of the most important challenges to win. As far as jury management goes, the addition of Het Keker, though extremely advantageous to me throughout the game, kept everyone on their toes. After a unanimous streak throughout the game, the Jones vote was the first to have a split and it marked the entrance of Het Keker advantages into this game in a big way. I think after that point, everyone was afraid of who might have an advantage and may sway who would be voted out. Because of that, a lot of the decisions I chose to make in voting people out were ones that I kept a secret. For that, I am truly, truly sorry if I hurt any of you. I did not make these decisions lightly and would not have done it unless I truly thought it was necessary. I would concede that jury management was one of the weaker parts in my game, but I am certain that we have a wonderful jury who will vote for the person who had the better game.  I tried to be as specific as possible without being completely overwhelming so please feel free to ask multiple questions!
