Sticks and Scones: A Bakeshop Mystery
Ellie Alexander
Thank you to NetGalley, Ellie Alexander, and Minotaur Books for this advance reader copy of the book. Below is my honest opinion review of the story.
Publication date: ‎ August 20, 2024 Print length: ‎ 310 pages A Bakeshop Mystery series
The latest installment of the Bakeshop Mystery series, this makes #19. I'm new to the author and series and found that there wasn't a lot of backstory at first, I wasn't sure who most of the characters were. There's a fine line between too much past information and too little but I though this erred on the side of too little. As a standalone it didn't work for me, it was many chapters into the story that I found out Carlos was her husband. As the story unfolded more of the characters did fall into place but it was confusing at first.
Now for the hard part, I didn't like the story. It moved so slow I became impatient and halfway through I gave up and skipped to the end. The plot had promise and I did wonder who killed the actor but it was an effort to make it to 50%. I wasn't invested in the main character, Jules acted like she didn't know how or wanted to solve the mystery. She's a novice but is in the loop with the police on the investigation? It didn't make sense. After 18 previous murders she should be either resolved or excited to find a dead body. One person was excited about the mystery and Lance was the only one. Without giving it away I will say the choice of murder weapon was original and properly icky. I'm a fan of culinary mysteries but this one is a no for me.

Curious Caterer Mysteries - Foiled Plans
Hallmark Mystery - 2024
Here's the short blurb for the episode: "Goldy Berry's Medieval feast at Hyde Castle gets interrupted by a murder. She teams up with Detective Shultz to solve the mystery before the murderer strikes again."
I'm a fan of the book series by Diane Mott Davidson. Goldy Bear was a caterer in Colorado with a business called Goldilocks Catering, Where Everything is Just Right. The books were well written and fun. I lived about an hour out of town and listened to the audio books on the way to and from work. I finished the entire series, 17 books I think. It was a bummer when the author retired. The character stumbled on murders like other culinary mystery characters, she was smart, nice, talented, curious, and helpful. Very likable lady. The books also gave recipes from her jobs. I still have one for a breakfast casserole that's sooo good. The author worked with a chef so the food was real.
This last episode has me steaming. I know things change when a book is made into a movie or series but sheese, this has turned out bad. The plot was ok, not too far off from Sticks and Scones (book 10). My issue is how Goldy has turned into an unlikeable person. As the show went on she became more snarky and downright self-righteous. Unlike the book character this Goldy didn't help so much as ratchet things up to a 10 and then act surprised when people were hurt. Tom, the detective, was more like a dufus that took his que from her. He never once told her to stay out of it, the cop always says that. He was better than this in the first 3 movies. What or who changed? I can't recommend this one to anyone who liked the books or even the first 3 movies. Hallmark plans more Curious Caterer movies and I hope the writers remember who Goldy really is, Tom too.

I didn’t plan this, but I ended up putting my copies of Check, Please! right next to my cookbooks. I just noticed.
I think Bitty would be proud.

(And, yes, Sweet Slices of History is about baking through the centuries and does contain historical recipes.)

It’s Here And It’s Queer!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My signed order of Sticks & Scones just arrived and I could not be more excited! I’ve been reading this webcomic for so long I can’t believe it’s actually coming to an end! This story has meant so much to me since it was really one of the first forms of media with LGBT+ representation and where I saw myself in a character, a scared in-the-closet southern gay. This story will forever be in my heart💜 I just want to thank @ngoziu @omgcheckplease for taking all us wellies on this amazing journey!
