Table Topping Barnet Make Surprise Addition To Squad From Local Rivals
Barnet FC have announced the signing of 25-year-old centre-back Connor Stevens after his contract was mutually terminated by local rivals Boreham Wood earlier this summer. The move comes as a bit of a shock to some Barnet fans, given that the club already had six centre-backs on the books, although two are currently out on loan. Despite being 25 years old, Stevens hasn’t played a vast amount of…

Reviews 218: Ed Longo & Applied Arts Ensemble
The newest release on Early Sounds Recordings comes courtesy of Ed Longo & Applied Arts Ensemble. Working across Germany, Switzerland, and Italy during 2017 and 2018, Ed Longo jammed with and recorded a host of adventurous musicians from diverse backgrounds, resulting in his debut LP The Other Fantasy. Conceptually, the record ruminates on the mental chaos of the internet age, concepts of Otherness within the collective consciousness, and our existence in a “continuous state of augmented reality, in which any concept of location, provenance, space and time fades into the ready-made world of escapist fantasies”...cerebral ideas given visual form by Riccardo Corda’s enigmatic art layout. Musically, the record feels right at home within the Early Sounds universe, as kaleidoscopic fusion jams and seaside funk journeys overflow with dazzling woodwind flights, tropical marimba cascades, scatting guitars, liquid slap bass fantasias, exotic live drum panoramas, gemstone Rhodes chords, sleepy synth orchestrations, sexual solos, heady electro-rhythms, and breathtaking vocal performances that sweep the spirit towards fantasy future lands. There are also a couple of blissed out ambient pieces closing each side, with Ed and his cohorts floating down etheric rivers of new age light and exploring sci-fi cityscapes, Blade Runner sax expanses, and noir jazz spirituals.
Ed Longo & Applied Art Ensemble - The Other Fantasy (Early Sounds Recordings, 2019) In “Love On the Line,” the energetic drums of Fabio Giannotti intertwine with electro-cymbal bells and golden hued tambourines. Domenico Andria’s slap bass pushes huge columns of air with its sorcerous funk movements while echo-smothered Rhodes flows, riffing guitars, and wavering cosmic synths background Daniele Lacava’s springtide flute adventures. The acoustic piano of Joel Holmes flows through the mix with dashing atonal runs and rainfall chordscapes before giving way to a wiggling synth solo that sets the air afire. At some point, we transition into a super hip vocal passage as cooing feminine voices and sultry whispers from Manon Girault and Zoé Perko fly over a sunset fusion jam out. Flanged bass explorations sit aside Floydian psychfunk riffs as Daniele alights on further flute solos, all while starshine synths and sci-fi squelches work against explosive drum fills and sizzling hi-hat patterns…everything eventually giving way to a coda of wavering keys, fluttering woodwinds, and pianos dancing on sea blue wave crests. “Arcadian Dream” follows with some of the softest textures to appear across the Early Sounds catalog. Seabirds converse above atmospheres of ocean romanticism and new age clouds billow in alongside acoustic guitar wanderings. Fabio Giannotti now appears on marimba and dances through the sea foam haze with crystalline note trails and gemstone fairy melodies and Nicola Galgari’s lush saxophone layers float amidst heavenly organ swirls…the whole thing evoking Finis Africae and Ariel Kalma as it transports the listener to a mystical forest of light.
“New Life” revels in lush romance vibrations while glassy Rhodes pianos flow above Steven Boreham’s liquid bass grooves and Ivan Ciccarelli’s midnight breakbeats. Congas enter and echoriffing guitars bubble up from underwater depths as celestial string orchestrations hover in the starry sky. Delicious g-funk slides bring it all together for a sensual glide through an equatorial paradise, with scatting synths transitioning into slow motion chime arpeggiations. The interplay between the bass and Tatum Rush’s guitar is pure intoxication, with interlocking riff webs and fiery funk accents playing off of rainbow keyboard atmospheres. Blistering fusion synths trade of solos with LSD-morphed e-pianos while gaseous strings move through the mix and at some point, soft outerspace vapors fly untethered above airy island rhythms. Then, a spellbinding Rhodes descent flutters over Ivan’s anthemic tom fills as we glide back into the sexual funk paradise, now drifting along on sea breeze vibrations and tropical palm frond flutters while Cristiano Pomante waltzes in with an ultra-cool marimba solo…the kind of thing that might waft through Haruomi Hosono’s Paraiso, full as it is of beachside jazz strolls and sunbeam solo dances. And the vibe is pushed even further towards exotic AOR perfection as Björn Magnusson melts over the mix with a radiant guitar solo built from smooth harmonizing descents and swooning sunset slides, even working at times into David Gilmore-esque psych blues screams that are tracked perfectly by the west coast hip-hop slides.
Dub claps refract in “A Palm in the Closet” while euphoric melodies of ocean glass flow forth from Joel Holmes’ Rhodes. Stuttering beats and morphing timbales underly guitar riffs swinging through starsea ripple worlds and Domenico Andria returns with more jaw-dropping slap bass fluidity…that same kind of mesmeric funk bass mastery that he delivered on Pellegrino’s Zodyaco…just pure 70s magic right down to the hot and biting production. Daniele Lacava’s ethereal flutes move between longform dream melodies and city-funk scats and are backed by wigged out theremin synths and hollow square-wave leads, all while Tatum Rush’s jangling guitars effervesce through colorful echolayers. As well, Tatum drops dreamy 90s R&B vocals over the exotic 70s lounge grooves while glistening piano adventures and schmaltzy flights move through the bewildering background fx layers. Closer “Trouble in Paradise” features dopamine cymbal taps and guttural bass guitar drones from Steven Boreham…the recording so deep and physical…as if you can hear the dust popping off of the roundwound strings. Nicola Galgari’s noir-soaked saxophones melt over oceanic Rhodes tapestries and once again the recording is very intimate, showcasing the sounds of warm breath flowing over reeds. Beneath everything moves a euphoric haze of vibrato hallucinations and tremolo motions and there are vibes of Bohren and Der Club of Gore, Angelo Badalamenti, and John Coltrane at his most narcotic as the song develops into midnight heroin jazz for a sci-fi futureworld, one colored by haunted synth gases and dreamclouds of dark magic.

Readers mail…. Sue Tilt… Tulips: Help Those With Cancer Association..
The 1st Tulips fashion show with cancer patients and cancer survivors as models was an overwhelming success.
Our models (of which 3 are still currently undergoing treatment) were so brave coming out in front of an audience of 120 people. Most of our models had never done anything like this before and were incredibly nervous leading up to the event, however, all said after that they had thoroughly enjoyed it. We have to say a huge thank you to all our models: Jane Boreham with her granddaughter Millie Temple helping, Barbara Osborne, Joan Gillin, Linda Roy, Michelle Martin, Carole Dovey, Pam Schofield, Sue Steel, Jane Nubley, Maureen Swayne, Nicky Montgomery, Remziye Bekir and our only male model of the evening Mehmet Emin Yanik who all made the show the success that it was.
The show was opened with 8 year old twins, Asya and Sahra Aytac both of whom looked absolutely radiant dancing in their wedding outfits which they have decided to donate to Tulips to sell to make money for cancer patients.
We also have to thank Juliana Jefferson who helped choreograph the show, Katie B who compered the first part of the evening, Karl Rugg who auctioned our evening dresses and prizes, Amore Tanning and Beauty who answered our appeal on facebook for someone to help with the hair and makeup of our models, Dawn Buyukertas and Auriana Stevens who donated a percentage of their sales on the night, Sandy Oram, Vanessa Jones, Sue Burke, Wendy McDuff, Lorraine Boak, Ayse and Lara Green, Sue Sheard and our car park attendants Trevor Sheard and Stuart Hillard
Thank you to the Oasis Hotel, they did a great job looking after the models all of who were stars of the night however one star stood out, Jane Boreham, who decided that she would raise money through sponsorship as all of her friends and family knew that by putting herself forward as a model was far out of her comfort zone. Jane raised a massive 3,200TL!
Our support also came from companies and individuals who supplied raffle prizes and auction items: Oasis Hotel, Jane and Robin Yates, Hideaway Hotel, Onar Village, Blue Song Restaurant, Silver Rocks Restaurant, Hannan Bags & Watches, our models who brought in various items…… we thank you all.
Finally, a huge thank you Lynda Hillard and Barbara Willbye for putting this show together and raising a fantastic 14,467.50TL!!

Towie star Liam Gatsby arrives for Mike Thalassitiss funeral
Emotional reality TV stars came together today together to say their final goodbyes to Love Island star Mike Thalassitis.
The former footballer and reality TV star was found hanged in a park near his home in Edmonton, north London on March 15 at the age of just 26.
Mike was said to be suffering from depression and financial troubles, and struggling to come to terms with the loss of his beloved grandmother, who had passed away days earlier.
Dozens of mourners gathered outside Christ Church in Southgate, north London, where the star is being laid to rest.
Stars at the poignant service include Amber Davies, Montana Brown, Jonny Mitchell, Jamie Jewitt and Camilla Thurlow, who appeared on the 2017 series of Love Island with Mike, alongside the host of the ITV2 show, Caroline Flack.
Mourners stopped to pay their respects to Mike’s older brother Nick, who often shared pictures of their close-knit family on social media.
Mike’s friend and fellow Love Island star Montana Brown, who was visibly distraught as she made her way into the church, posted an emotional tribute on Instagram this morning reading: ‘Wished today would never come’.
The order of service featured the touching words, ‘Do not stand at my grave and weep,’ from the 1932 poem by Mary Elizabeth Frye, alongside photos of Mike as a baby and pictures taken during his football career.

Mike’s beloved 94-year-old grandmother on his father’s side passed away days before his death, shortly after he had moved in with her to become her full-time carer.
The 26-year-old, who hailed from a Cypriot family, was said to be devastated by her loss. The news of his death also came just months after his best friend Danny Cutts passed away.
Floral wreathes surrounding Mike’s silver coffins spelled out the words ‘brother’, ‘son’ and ‘Mike’ and music played during the service included tracks by Phil Collins and Cat Stevens as well as Coldplay’s Fix You, and The Living Years by Mike and the Mechanics.
Mike’s family requested that donations should be made to mental health charity CALM in his memory.
Born in Edmonton in 1993, the former League One footballer had enjoyed a successful playing career before appearing on season three of ITV’s Love Island in 2017.
He rose to fame for his exploits in the villa and had viewers in stitches with his antics before he went on to search for love again in E4’s Celebs Go Dating.
Mike played football for Stevenage, Ebbsfleet United, Boreham Wood, St Albans City, Margate, Hemel Hempstead Town, Chelmsford and Welling United.
He had been due to open a restaurant named The Skillet, before he died. His friend and business partner Scott Neilson confirmed he would press ahead with the opening despite the tragedy because, ‘it was what Mike would’ve wanted’.

Mr Neilson said after the tragedy: ‘Mike would’ve wanted this cafe to open, he spent everyday for the past couple of months working hard to make this place a success so we are pulling together to get this ready for everyone and especially for Mike.’
The Reverend Dr Chrichton Limbert told the congregation today: ‘On behalf of everyone at Christ Church, Southgate, I extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to Mike’s family and friends, and all those affected by his tragic death.
‘I hope that by coming together this afternoon, those who knew and lived Mike can find some comfort and support at this incredibly difficult time.
‘The family have requested that the service be carried out in private, and we would ask that the media respect their wishes accordingly.’
The star’s ex-girlfriend Megan McKenna, meanwhile, eschewed the service after jetting out of the country to fly to Nashville earlier this week ‘to honour work commitments.’
The reality star, 26, was seen at London’s Heathrow airport on Tuesday.

This was the last photo Mike posted on Instagram, on March 5 – days before he died
The former League One footballer had enjoyed a successful playing career before appearing on season three of ITV’s Love Island in 2017 (pictured)
Mike and Megan dated on and off throughout 2018, but ended their relationship last August.
Fellow Love Island star Sophie Gradon, 32, who appeared on season two of the reality show in 2016, was found dead in June last year.
After their deaths, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said reality TV shows have a duty to care for contestants after they become famous.

Celtic braced for Dembele bid, Gerrard wants new Morelos deal
<!–
FOOTBALL GOSSIP
Celtic are bracing themselves for a £13.5m bid from Marseille for Moussa Dembele. The Scottish champions are vulnerable to losing their top stars after their Champions League exit at the hands of AEK Athens. (Daily Star, print edition)
Celtic insist Dembele and Olivier Ntcham, who has attracted interest from Porto, are not for sale, while fellow Frenchman and club-record signing Odsonne Edouard is an injury doubt for next week’s Europa League play-off against Suduva. (Daily Record)[1]
Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is ready to reward Alfredo Morelos with a new contract after the club rejected a “derisory” £3.75m Bordeaux bid for the striker. (Scotsman)[2][3]
Gerrard hailed the display of Allan McGregor, as the Rangers goalkeeper starred in their Europa League draw with Maribor, ensuring progression to the next round. The former Liverpool boss said of the Scotland stopper: “it’s a shame he’s nearly as old as me – we wish he was 10 years younger”. (Daily Record)[4]
Dedryck Boyata’s agents arrived in Glasgow on Thursday for “showdown talks” with Celtic. The Belgian defender declared himself injured for Celtic’s loss in Greece, despite boss Brendan Rodgers saying he was fit. Discussions were conducted amicably. (Scottish Sun)[5]
Former Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov believes there is “no way back” for Boyata at the Glasgow club. (Various)
Neil Lennon says Molde’s £10m-rated striker Erling Braut Haland was the difference between the Norwegian club and his Hibernian in Thursday’s Europa League tie. Hibs lost 3-0 in Norway and are eliminated from Europe. Haland scored two goals. (Scottish Sun)[6]
Lennon believes his squad needs “more investment” after losing “best player” John McGinn to Aston Villa, and hopes to make several more signings this summer. (Scotsman)[7]
Rangers ‘mature & measured’ in Maribor[8]
Hibs have ‘only themselves to blame’[9]
Celtic to face Lithuania’s Suduva in Europa League play-off[10]
Derek McInnes insists Aberdeen won’t get drawn into a war of words with Hamilton Academical over the value of Lewis Ferguson at next week’s transfer tribunal. The Dons have offered £100,000 for the midfielder, but Hamilton Academical are hoping to equal the £1.25m they got when James McCarthy joined Wigan in 2009. (Various)
Craig Levein is looking to replace injured Christophe Berra in the Hearts defence but says the club captain has a big role to play off the pitch this season. (Daily Record, print edition)
Former Kilmarnock striker Souleymane Coulibaly could land a move to Partick Thistle. The Ivory Coast international is a free agent and has been training with the Jags this week. (Scottish Sun)[11]
Livingston player-manager Kenny Miller insists the club’s new plastic pitch – widely criticised after its first use last weekend – plays better than it looks. (Daily Express, print edition)
Allan Johnston insists only Scottish teams should compete in the Challenge Cup after his Dunfermline Athletic side were drawn to face Boreham Wood away from home, which will require a 830-mile round trip. (Various)
OTHER GOSSIP
Scottish rugby sides don’t get the respect they deserve from their English counterparts, says Glasgow Warriors back Ruaridh Jackson. Warriors play their first pre-season friendly on Friday against Harlequins – one of two English clubs for whom Jackson has played. (Times)[12]

Emery, into his second week with the Arsenal squad at their London Colney training ground, is yet to discuss his squad with predecessor Arsene Wenger and insists any advice the club's boss of 22 years will be secondary to his relationship with the players."I have my own personality," he said. The former Paris Saint-Germain and Sevilla manager has already stamped his authority on the squad he inherited, with five new signings for fees that could collectively exceed £70m. Arsenal's latest new signing Matteo Guendouzi trained with his team-mates on Wednesday Lucas Torreira, Bernd Leno, Sokratis, Matteo Guendouzi and Stephan Lichtsteiner have all arrived, while stalwarts Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla and Per Mertesacker have left the club."We signed the players who we need, only if one player is a big opportunity for us to sign we can do it," Emery said ahead of Arsenal's first pre-season game of the summer against Boreham Wood on Saturday."Normally we are thinking about the young player, the possibility to stay with us or go on loan to another team."In this moment I think the squad is complete, only the possibility for one player or two players to leave."To sign [a player] in the next month? Only if he is a big opportunity." Steven N'Zonzi is part of France's World Cup squad Arsenal are in talks to sign Sevilla midfielder Steven N'Zonzi, according to Sky sources, but Emery indicated no offer has been made."I know him," said Emery, who worked with N'Zonzi at Sevilla. "But we didn't do movement for him."Securing the future of key midfielder Aaron Ramsey is set to be more of a concern for Emery. The Welshman has one year remaining on his current contract.
