643: Jody Baran - Stories from the O.G.
This week’s guest is affectionately called an “O.G.” because the commonly held definition for the “Old Guy” term means, “a slang term for someone who's incredibly exceptional, authentic, or “old-school.” Jody Baran certainly personifies that definition because of his decades of performances including years aboard cruise ships and 17 years performing in a hotel in Maui, Hawaii. His associations with some of the legends in our community have taught him a lot which he shares with us this week.
vimeo
Jody shares lots of stories in this episode from his life that were taught to him by his friends like John Moehring, Lance Burton, Johnny Thompson, Channing Pollock, Jay Marshall and so many more. This episode contains more advice and wisdom than you can get from anywhere else. I think you’ll agree that this is a good one!

Valley Motel, 1313 Fremont. The motel was built by the Franklin bros in ‘52, and Vegas Vic was added to its otherwise nondescript sign in the mid 50s. In east Fremont’s down & out days of the mid 00’s the sign was purchased by Steve Wyrick. The motel closed in 2012.

633: Nick Scales on West Texas life
Nick Scales and I have known each other for years, and it was great to finally get a chance to sit down and do an interview.  Nicholas has been on the faculty of West Texas A&M University since 2005 and is a frequent guest artist and presenter at various conferences.
We cover some very fun memories of his time playing with Inez Wyrick and David Murray back in the Amarillo Symphony (where Nick is currently principal bass).  You’ll love this fun romp through bass history with Nick—enjoy!

What we have: Representative democracy
A basic user's guide.
FEDERAL GOVERNMENT
U.S. senators and congressmen represent the interests of their constituents at the federal level. The authorities of Congress include the passage of new federal legislation, the amending or repealing of existing federal laws and the spending of federal tax dollars.
U.S. Sen. John Boozman (R)
1401 W. Capitol Ave., Suite 155, Little Rock, 72201
372-7153
141 Hart Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510
202-224-4843
U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton (R)
P.O. Box 25216; Little Rock, 72221
223-9081
124 Russell Senate Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20510
202-224-2353
U.S. Rep. French Hill (R)
1501 N. University Ave., Suite 150, Little Rock, 72207
324-5941
1229 Longworth House Office Building, Washington, D.C. 20515
202-225-2506
STATE GOVERNMENT
Constitutional officers
Arkansas's executive branch is headed by the governor, who has ultimate authority over the operations of most state agencies, from the Department of Human Services to the Department of Correction. The second-most important statewide elected office is the attorney general, who serves as counsel for the state and acts as an advocate for consumers. The secretary of state has authority over Arkansas's election records (although the administration of elections is handled by county officials). In addition to the governor, attorney general and secretary of state, Arkansas has four other constitutional officer positions not listed below: lieutenant governor, auditor, treasurer and land commissioner (you probably won't ever have cause to deal with them).
Gov. Asa Hutchinson (R)
State Capitol, 500 Woodlane St., Room 250, Little Rock, 72201
682-2345
Attorney General Leslie Rutledge (R)
323 Center St., Room 200
General inquiries: 682-2007
Consumer hotline: 682-2341
Racial profiling hotline: 877-246-4404
Crime victims and outreach hotline: 682-1020
Medicaid fraud reporting hotline:  682-7760
Secretary of State Mark Martin (R)
State Capitol, 500 Woodlane St., Room 256
682-1010
State legislators representing a portion of Pulaski County
The Arkansas General Assembly creates the state's laws, controls how state tax revenue is spent and has limited influence over the operations of state agencies. Because state senators and representatives are elected to represent the interests of their constituents, contacting these officials is generally the most direct means for citizens to communicate with state government. Every resident of Arkansas has one senator and one representative. General inquiries to the House of Representatives can be directed to 682-6211 during the legislative session and 682-7771 when the General Assembly is not in session. The Senate's in-session number is 682-2902; its out-of-session number is 682-6107.

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS
County and municipal governments are responsible for administering local services, including law enforcement, maintenance of local roads, waste and recycling pickup, and maintenance of sewer and water systems. The county also runs the jail, administers local elections and collects property taxes.
The executive at the county level is the county judge, and the legislative body is the quorum court. The structure of municipal government varies according to the city: Some cities have a strong executive, others do not. In Little Rock, an unelected official, the city manager, is responsible for the broad day-to-day operations of the city.

SCHOOL DISTRICTS
In a traditional public school district, voters elect school board members, who set policy for the district, make spending decisions and hire and fire its executive, the superintendent. However, the state Board of Education and the Education Department have the authority to seize control of a district and dissolve its elected board, under circumstances. In the event of a takeover, the (unelected) state Education Commissioner serves as the board until the district is returned to local control.
The state took control of the Little Rock School District in Jan. 2015 due to six out of the district's 48 campuses being deemed in "academic distress." In 2016, the state returned the Pulaski County Special School District to local control after five years of state takeover, and voters elected new members to the PCSSD school board in November. The Jacksonville-North Pulaski District, which was formerly part of the PCSSD, achieved full autonomy in 2016.
Traditional school districts are funded by local property tax revenue, state revenue and federal funds. In addition to its four traditional public school districts, Pulaski County is also home to a number of charter schools (which are publicly funded but privately administered) and private schools.

Wyrick brings ‘Ultra Magic’ to White House...
The White House Theatre will now be the new home for “Steve Wyrick: Ultra Magician,” which is slated to open over Memorial Day weekend in the 1,200-seat venue. Wyrick will be co-headlining the theatre with another new show, “The Legend of Kung Fu Return of the Dragon.”
Tumblr media
According to a release from the theater, Wyrick’s 90-minute show will be “the largest magic show ... in history,”  and feature the White House Theatre’s state-of-the-art, $1 million LED video wall with more than one million lights. The addition of a secondary video wall will also make the show “the most technologically advanced magic show in history.”
He’ll also be introducing his two newest signature illusions in this $10-million show, executive-produced by Hollis Campbell and Matt McGraw.
“My new multimedia show merges the art of illusion with the most advanced video technology available,” Wyrick said. “For example, I go inside a Ms. Pac-Man video game, leaving the present time, and create magic in a virtual world there. Read more... (Photo courtesy of White House Theatre)

Lucky Motel, 1111 Fremont St (1951-2012). Postcard, 50s-60s.
The U-shaped, 28-unit Lucky Motel was built on Block 1 of Ladd Addition, the second motel by brothers J.T. and Al Franklin, and completed October 1951. The pool was added in ‘57. Franklin bros also helped to build the shopping center across the street (1100-1126 Fremont) which was completed in the mid 50s.
Franklins sold the motel to Roy Williams in ’61; Williams sold to Allen & Dolly Zender in ’74; the motel changed hands several times, and was last sold in 2013 to Downtown Project who closed the motel.
The motel’s neon sign is seen in the earliest dated photos of the motel. In the 00s, Steve Wyrick bought the motel sign for a private collection and placed it in storage. It was bought by the City of Las Vegas and returned to the closed motel in 2020.

865: Remembering Inez Wyrick
Inez Wyrick, one of our young bassist pedagogy pioneers, passed away at the end of 2021.  In this episode, we rebroadcast our interview with her from 2016 and reflect on her impact on countless bassists across the globe.
About Inez (from Tribute Archive):
She began performing music in the 8th grade with her father, and taught music, and served as a psychic consultant for the entirety of her adult life, never fully retiring. She served on the Board of Directors for the International Society of Bassists who awarded her the “Young Bass Ambassador” award in 2001, and which, starting in 2022, is named the Under 14 Solo Prize the “Inez Wyrick Prize,” in her honor.
She was also Co-founder and Co-Artistic Director of the Bass Coalition Summer Workshop. In addition to teaching music privately, she also served on the faculties of Shenandoah Conservatory, Indiana University’s String Academy, Amarillo College, Odessa College, and Texas Tech University’s Orchestra Camp. She founded the Amarillo Bass Base, the first organization of its kind for young bassists, and members of her family of students over the years teach and hold professional positions in ensembles, music businesses, and educational institutions worldwide.
An active lecturer, clinician, and adjudicator, Inez appeared regularly at the Richard Davis Bass Conference, Golden Gate Bass Camp, and International Society of Bassists conventions. She has had over 500 arrangements/compositions published for Double Bass Ensemble.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to either the ISB or Bass Coalition:

349: Nathan Burton - The Other "Burton" in Town
With Lance Burton closing the doors on his show at the Monte Carlo Casino in 2010 , that left Nathan Burton as the only person on "The Strip" with the same last name (though no relation). Nathan Burton has been headlining on "The Las Vegas Strip" since 2006 and continues today in his theater in the Miracle Mile Shops (the old "Steve Wyrick Theater") attached to Planet Hollywood. A fast action illusion show, his performance is perfect for families who visit Las Vegas but still has plenty of glitz and showgirls for adults.
In this podcast, Nathan talks about developing his show, performing in Las Vegas and television and on the road, plus how he deals with pre-show jitters. This abbreviated chat was cut a little short due to it being Valentine's Day and his date with his wife, so he had to cut our early.
00:04:15 - Nathan talks about working in Las Vegas
00:20:26 - Eric Citron from The Great American Magic Company talks about new products just released including "Mr. Golden Balls", "Bang On 2.0", and "Insta-Change".
00:25:31 - Nathan returns to talk about magic conventions, his early act, trick selection, creativity and handling "Jitters" before the show.
00: 42:02 - Product Review - "Decisions" by Alakazam U.K. and Mozique - high recommendation
00:45:23 - Product Review - "Sherlock'oin" by Thomas Riboulet and Anthony Stan - high recommendation
00:51:43 - Product Review - "Silk to Chocolate" by Sean Yang - recommended
00:54:20 - Product Review - "Opus" by Nefisch - recommended
