Fic Recs: "Didn't see that one coming" edition...
I've been wanting to start collecting my all time favorite stories in ages but never knew where to start, there are just too many talented souls out there. A lazy day of re-reading favorites makes me want to finally give it a try though.
Featuring today: stories that defy my usual hunting patterns but still became all time favourites against all odds. Stories leaving me utterly gobsmacked thinking "That was so, soo awsome... but how on earth did I end up in this fandom / character / trope tag of all places?".
@messy-insomniac-bookgirl Let's be honest: this writer is the spirit animal of this specific selection. Never heard of the fandom? Dislike the protagonist with a passion? Doesn't matter: she writes it, I devour and love it. The reason? Dense and hugely rewarding story-telling, perfect pacing, side characters you want to adopt on the spot, delicious slow burns with sooo much yearning. And, most importantly, the awesome female OCs. I am in love with each and every one of them, regardless who they share a screen with. It's almost impossible to select just one story for this list but let's go for "Keep Calm and Buckle Up" (AO3) for suddenly making me feel things when Steve Rogers entered the stage in "Infinity War". Steve Rogers x OFC, James "Bucky" Barnes x OFC, Steve x Bucky x OFC. Action, slow burn, emotional roller coaster rides. Rated E.
@batsingotham "Written in the stars" (AO3) I don't do Soul Mate AUs. I don't do Robert Pattinson characters. For me the best things about "The Batman" were Andy Serkis' Alfred and 3 hours of Niravana in a loop. But the undisputed goddess queen of slow burn domestic fluff overruled all of that. Bruce Wayne/Reader. Soulmate AU. Dorks in love. Bruce needs a hug and Alfred has the patience of a saint. Rated M.
"Sweet Conversations" by @glassgulls Lord of the Rings has been living in my head rent free ever since I was a teenager but I simply don't do Elves. Period. Yes, Glorfindel is very cool and Lee Pace's Thranduil is an absolute vision (the costumes, the voice and the make up, mind you, don't get me started on any other aspect of the Hobbit movies though...) but otherwise? Thanks but no thanks. Nevertheless: the award for best fictional kiss I’ve come across in ages goes to this gem. Amazing scene setting and character work for something so short. Leaves you weak-kneed and high as a kite on serotonin for the rest of the day. Haldir/Reader. One-shot. Rated M.
„Ownership of Mine“ by @amywritesthings . Okay, lets be honest, peeps: Prison settings for a romance story? Seriously? Who in their right mind would be able to think about romance and seduction when all of your freedom is taken away, you are crammed into a small and dark space with people of questionable character and put under constant surveilance. Well… apparently I can… with this story. Even if that tag is a big red NO GO sign for me otherwise. Amazingly dense story telling and atmosphere building in just 3 short chapters. Kino Loy/Reader. Rated E.
„Directions“ by @zinzinina . Probably a sure sign that I am getting too old for all of this but tags about age gaps, first love or first times usually make me run for the hills. Add a character like Poe Dameron (I mean: come on! Howww…?!) to the mix and there is not enough willing suspension of disbelieve in the world to get me immersed in the plot. Or so I thought. Unwisely. Until this beauty came along. Poe Dameron/Reader. Rated E.

Hi friends.
It’s been a really rough week and I’m finding my reading is waning.
I’ve got some major health issues going on right now and you’d think that means more time to read but the focus is what’s doing me in,
If I’m taking a bit longer than normal to read, like or reblog, I apologise,

The Red Wedding.
Summary: Weddings are times for Celebrations, but this wedding takes the cake.
Pairings: Mafia!Steve Rogers x OFC
Words: 3.6k
Warnings: Violence lots of violence, and Peggy Carter.
A/N: It's been a while and I'm super excited to post this. This is based on a scene from a movie I watched today that just made my jaw drop super different but has the same premise.
When one is young there is always that time when you picture the perfect wedding, the perfection in every detail from the large venue with the gorgeous view to the smallest ribbon that would be used. Everything was methodical. Yet here you stood blood splattering your beautiful pearl white dress, hair in disarray, mascara smudged and running, and a loaded gun in your hand.
Guests were frantically running around trying to find some sense of what the hell had just happened. From across the room, you watched your husband face you taking a step forward and then another until he was only a few feet away, you raised the gun pointing it at him, but not once did he flinch at your action.
“Me chingastes Steve, por ultima ves me chingastes hijo de puta.”
Taking a deep breath, you pulled the trigger.
- 3 Hours Earlier -
The ceremony had been beautiful, Steve had gone all out on expenses never once asking anything from your parents. This had brought much joy to your father as he acted like the cat that ate the canary, every time he showed a hint of smugness you couldn’t help but roll your eyes sharing some meaningful glances with Steve.
In a sense yes, your father was earning a lot with your marriage to Steve, by having his business be administered by the biggest mafia boss in Brooklyn and if his price was to let him have his only child that was a sacrifice, he was willing to make. Well, not much of a sacrifice since you and Steve had been together for quite some time joined to the hip since he was a sickly kid until he rose in ranks and his abrupt puberty where he grew three times his size and could plummet anybody who looked at you funny into the ground.
With how long you both had been together it was almost inevitable for your engagement to be announced, everybody knew and everybody important was invited. With Steve and you deciding to keep the ceremony private (much to the chagrin of your father), with your parents, Bucky Steve’s best friend and righthand man, and Sam Steve’s other best friend present everything went smoothly just like you had always pictured.
The ride over to the venue was filled with heated kisses and touches that made you lose your breath; you could feel his smug smile as he kissed your neck. Everything was going as planned your entrance was greeted with big cheers and applauses, at some point you and Steve were separated he was being taken by Sam and Bucky to join the other boys while you took the liberty of greeting your other guest trying to make time before the real festivities began.
Half an hour later, after removing yourself from a painful conversation with your Tia where she went on and on about her newly installed backyard grill, you were able to meet with Steve again who looked a little disheveled but otherwise unharmed. He was grinning a stupid smile marking his face as he pulled you close, giving you small kisses and finally bringing you into a big hug, burying his nose into your hair.
“You don’t know how happy you’ve made me by tying yourself to me indefinitely.”
You huffed out a laugh hitting his chest at his remark, “Menso, I married you because I love you don’t be calling our marriage me tying myself to you.”
You gave him a small smirk, “I mean I can still get rid of you at any time.”
Steve let out a deep growl pulling you flush against him; you give a small yelp at his roughness trying to look around and see if anybody noticed, noting that most people were avoiding looking or walking toward your area. Steve jostled you again forcing your attention back to him, you knew Steve like the back of your hand and at that moment, you knew that if it would have just been the two of you Steve wouldn’t have hesitated to throw you over this table and fuck you into oblivion.
“Baby you really do know how to get me going, I can’t wait until we get home so I can fuck you into every surface that I can get you on.”
Bucky, who was the only person who was brave enough to come near you cleared his throat, he motioned behind him where several people had congregated to talk. Steve’s face turned stormy pulling away from you fixing himself to a proper state, he gave Bucky a nod who turned back towards the group, Steve looked pissed, and this worried you because you knew Steve and he would never let his emotions show especially in such an open venue where most of his competitors were present.
Whatever this was it was serious.
You grabbed his hand giving him a brief squeeze to let him know that it was okay, he gave a soft huff giving you a brief kiss before heading over to Bucky and the other men. You didn’t want anybody to see you worried, raising a glass to the DJ a soft cumbia started that got many people to join the dance floor keeping many busy and others distracted.
You watched Steve and the men as they talked in hurried hushed tones, you could see the tension building as one of the men who you knew was Tony who was from the Manhattan district showed something to Steve that made him madder. The music drowned out most people and they left you alone, just as you were beginning to relax you hear the tell-tale sign of your ringtone you knew you should have kept it silent, but you were waiting on a particularly important phone call from your firm for a recent case.
You grabbed your phone ‘UNKOWN NUMBER’ displayed across the screen, it confused you, so you let it ring not bothering to pick it up. The ringing stopped but soon after it started again, you knew you couldn’t ignore it any longer if they were going to keep insisting.
“Hello?”
“Finally, I get ahold of you!” A deep feminine voice answered through the line, “Congratulations on the wedding! You’re a lucky girl today.”
“Who is this? What do you want?” You looked around the room trying to see if you could spot anybody with a phone.
“Calm down kid, I just wanted to give you a little information on the man you just married,” The lady on the line laughed and you couldn’t help the annoyance that brought on you.
“Look lady I don’t know who the fuck you are but you’re getting on my fucking nerves.”
“Oh, sweetie I was just trying to make conversation, I just wanted you to know what your husband was doing or who he was doing just a few days a few days ago or specifically last Thursday.”
That stopped you cold, you knew exactly what she was talking about. Last week Steve had gone out early in the morning saying that he had an important meeting with a buyer, and he stayed out late almost coming home until early the next morning. You remembered since you had stayed up to wait for him and to finish working on some case files before you had to head out on your honeymoon.
“He worked me out all night until early morning, it was an amazing goodbye gift he gave me before he tied himself to you.”
At this point you were shacking both in anger and in sorrow at what could be the truth, you looked to where Steve was still preoccupied with his friends at that moment he looked up and caught your eye his face melted into something lovingly and you couldn’t help the choked sobbed that worked its way out your throat. You heard the lady on the line laugh at your sob and you knew that she was a sadistic bitch who was enjoying your pain.
“Quien chingados eres? You fucking bitch if you have the balls to call me on my wedding day and tell me all of this you should also have the balls to tell me your fucking name.”
She laughed again loving the fact that she was able to get you to this state, “You should ask him who Peggy Carter is and you’ll know in an instant that I’m not lying to you.”
The line went dead after and all you could focus on was the dial tone, you were fuming not just at this Peggy lady but at Steve for making you a fool. At this point you weren’t in control of yourself everything seemed so loud and too quiet as you made your way to Steve and the other men, pushing past them not caring who they were until Steve was the only thing you could see.
“Who the fuck is Peggy Carter?” Steve’s eyes widened at the name and all the other men in the group began to murmur amongst each other, but your focus was only on Steve who seemed to have lost all color.
“Baby how do you know that name?” His answer was enough to set you off as you punched his chest slapping the phone onto his chest, your only goal was to get answers from him and hurt him as much as you were hurting. Bucky tried to grab your arm, but Steve shook his head no and that just made you madder.
“Te la cogiste verdad hijo de puta? You fucked her a week before our fucking wedding, how could you?”
Steve was holding onto your arms trying to stop you from hitting him but also from hurting yourself, he pulled you forward until you were squished against his chest but that just felt like you were suffocating so you pushed him away.
“Answer me you fucking coward, did you fuck her?”
“No baby I would never do that to you, you know how much I love you.”
“Don’t lie to me Rogers or I swear to god I’ll fucking kill you.”
Just as Steve was about to answer a few gunshots ranged out across the room, Steve pushed you down until he was covering around you, and people began to run around as glass shattered and screams went around the room. Steve pushed you towards Bucky telling him to get you out of there as more shots were fired Bucky handed Steve a gun as he began to pull you towards the exit.
“Bucky let me go,” You screeched as you fought against him, he ignored you keeping himself close as he walked you towards the exit. From your position you couldn’t see much, just people running from every exit that they could find. Just as you were reaching the door you spotted a brown-haired woman walking towards where Steve was, seeming to ignore the chaos around and strolling towards your husband as if there was no care in the world. Her lips were painted a deep red matching her dress and something in you just knew.
This fucking bitch was Peggy Carter.
“Bucky you have to go to Steve, you have to tell him that Peggy is here.”
Bucky seemed to have come to the same conclusion as he watched Peggy making her way to where Steve was fighting some goon oblivious to her presence.
“I’ll be fine just go to Steve, give me a gun,” He whipped his head towards a conflicted look until he reached into his inner pocket and removed a gun for you.
“You better not make me regret this,” Were his last words until he was sprinting towards Steve dodging men as much as he could. You turned to the exit running towards the kitchen where you knew you could lose someone or find someplace to hide. Just as you reached the doors to outs you were yanked back by a strong force, slamming you onto the floor stealing your breath away.
You knew you only had seconds to react, you shot up a few rounds hoping something would hit. A grunt, and then a thump as the man fell over. There was blood and a lot of it, most of it had missed you but there was still a rogue spray that hit you. You got up shakily, you knew how to shoot a gun, but never had you killed someone like this.
Your insides felt loose and firm and you couldn’t help but throw up everything from that day until you were dry heaving. You must have taken too long because as soon as you steadied yourself somebody was already grabbing you. You tried to struggle against your grabber but stopped as you felt the barrel of the gun being pressed against your head.
“Don’t try anything sweetheart, now you and I are gonna take a little trip back into the reception” he started shoving you forward, “Can’t have you leaving your own party early now, can we?”
You grunted as he pushed you hard enough that your foot gave out a little, it wasn’t extreme, but it did cause you to start limping much to the annoyance of your captor. He pushed you towards the doors leading to the reception, Steve was bound to a chair Peggy was on his lap Bucky and Sam were surrounded by men keeping them from doing anything without getting killed. The moment the doors had slammed open everybody turned to you, Steve’s eyes seemed to widen as he looked at all the blood and your limping state, he began to fight against his restraints jostling Peggy out of his lap.
The gun being pressed to your temple stops him from doing anything else. Peggy huffs motioning for the man holding you to bring you forward. You didn’t have your gun anymore; Steve was incapacitated, and Bucky and Sam had every gun on them you knew that this looked like you had lost. The moment that you were close Peggy drew you into a hug, you recoiled trying to get away from her but a gun to your back stopped you.
“After our heart-to-heart through the phone, this is how you’re going to repay me?” Peggy pouted at you, and this made it clear she was crazy.
“Yeah, well I just saw it as some crazy bitch trying to ruin my perfect day, how would you see it?” That must have been the wrong thing as Peggy’s face became enraged, she swung her hand at you a sting running from your cheek where she struck you.
“Get the fuck away from her Peggy or I swear,” Steve yelled at her fighting to get himself off the chair, Peggy ignored him tooting in disagreement.
“Baby if you don’t stop trying to get out of that chair, I’ll start hurting your little bitch.” Steve seemed to be having a fight with himself trying to find a way to get out of this and get you to safety. Peggy walked towards Steve leaning down to whisper something in his ear that made him mad but made no move to fight.
“Now baby, how about you tell your wife about the wonderful time we had, how you told me how much you loved me and how the only reason why we couldn’t be together was that you were getting much more from the deal.”
Bucky, who was still on the ground, whipped his head towards you ready to say something but was stopped as the man behind him pressed the barrel into the back of his head stopping him.
“Just let her know baby, tell her what we did, and I promise you I’ll let her go.” Steve seemed to contemplate before dropping his head in defeat.
“It’s true, we were together last Thursday,” Steve made a face as if he was in pain, almost as if the words he was spitting out hurt, “I was having second thoughts about getting married, I didn’t know if you were the right person for me.”
Steve’s words hit you hard, all the pain and rage that was inside you was brewing and at this point, you were unsure if you were about to scream or throw up.
“Peggy she was there, and I took my chance to figure it out if you were what I wanted.” He lamely finished, his face twisted into a grimace but all you could see was Peggy’s stupid grin and that just made you angry. You slammed your heel into your captor and threw your head back until it collided with his face, and he released you with a yelp. Bucky and Sam seemed to have taken advantage of the distraction as they flew back against their own captors wrestling them into the ground. Steve slammed himself back smashing the chair into pieces to free himself. Your captor tackled you down, slamming your head into the floor obscenities flying at you before Steve practically ripped him off from you.
Peggy began to rush away but you took the chance from everybody’s distraction to go after her, you were unsteady, but she did not get far as you tackled her. She began to throw punches at you, one of them catching you in your cheek, the other splitting your lip, but you weren’t far off as you also landed your own blows.
“You fucking Perra, you ruined my wedding and I’m going to fucking kill you.”
Peggy reached around her trying to find a way to get you off her, her hands grazing the floor until she latched onto a shard of champagne glass from the earlier altercation. She lashed up cutting your arm and making you retreat as she tried to keep slashing at you. She rushed over trying to stab you screaming her head off at you as she did.
“He was mine; he was always mine and you fucking took him away you fucking bitch. He loves me not you.” She cried as she slashed your arms. You pushed her away as she stumbled back and fell just as she was going to get up, she was stopped by Bucky who had incapacitated everybody else.
Steve walked towards Bucky looking down at a struggling Peggy, “Take her somewhere else, we’ll deal with her later.”
You walked away, your leg was starting to hurt and the cuts from the glass were stinging, this wasn’t your fight anymore and you were done. People were rushing around, reinforcements from someone else, and at this point, you really didn’t care, you knew you would have to call your parents and check on them, you knew they had gotten out but still.
You reached down to collect a bottle of champagne that was still intact and an abandoned gun. You knew you still had one thing to deal with and you could finally head home and relax, but this would just have to be a priority. You turned back to the scene; your husband was still directing people trying to clear out as much as he could.
You watched your husband as he pointed at things around, he turned towards you, taking in your running mascara blood-covered dress, and messy hair, and all he felt was deep love at how strong you were in all this. He walked towards you trying to get as close as he could stopping short as he saw the gun in your hand, you raised it aiming at him but that didn’t scare him, the only thoughts that came into his mind were how beautiful you looked and how lucky he was to have you.
“Me chingastes Steve, por ultima ves me chingastes hijo de puta.”
Steve didn’t move and felt the bullet graze his arm, but he didn’t care as the rage melted off you, and concern was all he saw. You rushed forward discarding the gun and bottle, you grabbed at his arm trying to see the damage you caused but instead met a firm chest as Steve held you close.
“Chingate Steve, dejame ver, let me see your arm you fucking asshole.” You pushed away from him as you removed his suit to look at his arm, he began to caress your face you ignored him as you ripped away at his shirt.
“This doesn’t change anything you know, I’m fucking pissed at you asshole,” You looked up at Steve who only showed love in his eyes, “You’re lucky I don’t file for an annulment.”
Steve felt the breath being squeezed out of him, just the idea of you not being with him scared him.
“Baby, I promise you with all that I have and to my last breath that I was never with her, I’ve only ever loved you and I promise you that everything she said was a lie.” Steve was outright begging at this point trying to make you believe him, and you knew Steve you’ve always known Steve.
“Of course, I know, don’t be a pendejo about this I know you, Steve, I did doubt you, but I know that disrespecting me and us like that is not in you.”
You looked away seeing Bucky pick up the gun you had used on Steve as he pocketed away, he caught your eye and nodded at you and Steve as if to ask if you were okay. You knew he wasn’t asking about your injuries, so you nodded at him, he inclined his head and turned to Sam slapping him in the back which made the other man yelp and punches him back.
“Steve yo te amo, and I know you, I’ve always known what type of man you are,” You pushed up, your foot complained against it, but you brushed your lips against his which made him melt at your touch, “I love you.”
Steve let the tension out, kissing you passionately as if he were trying to engrave your memory into his brain.
“I love you too.”

Tony swirled in the air, gliding in his suit. Using his tech, he scanned the building Grace had instructed him to infiltrate. Felicity Landon's secret work lay concealed within an abandoned hotel in Croatia, safeguarded within a vault buried several meters beneath the ground. However, the entire structure was rigged to collapse at the slightest sign of a break-in. And even if they somehow managed to access the vault, all the critical information was secured within an impenetrable metal case, programmed to unlock only through Grace's iris scan.
Felicity Landon had meticulously planned every detail of this operation, accounting for potential risks and unwanted attention. Unfortunately for them, their operation was bound to attract a lot of attention. So that was their plan for today: Tony would take to the skies, launching missiles at the building while Grace and Braylon provided support from their jet. They had chosen a specific date and time to minimize civilian presence.
Once the building was torn down, Tony would analyze the scale of the collision and proceed to the vault. He'd use Iron Man's strength to dig through the remains, reach the vault and hack it open to retrieve the suitcase. Then, he would return to the jet, passing the case to Grace for her to unlock. So far, their plan unfolded seamlessly, with Braylon and Grace closely monitoring the situation.
"You're doing great, Tony," Grace's voice reverberated in his ear.
Tony let out a self-satisfied chuckle. "These new sensor missiles are pretty nifty!"
"Boss is going all out!" Braylon chimed in, deftly steering the jet away from the crumbling building.
"So much for being subtle," Grace muttered with a soft laugh.
"Subtlety isn't really my style," Tony quipped while he cleared away the wreckage and advanced to the vault.
Grace's concern surfaced. "What if Hydra is nearby?"
Braylon grinned confidently. "We'll take 'em down without breaking a sweat."
"Can't you practically smell the sweet smell of success?" Tony said as he dismantled the debris and headed toward the vault's entrance. "Found it. I'll get the case and—"
"Uh, boss, we've got unexpected visitors," Braylon interrupted. "As it appears, Captain America and his friends are on their way. Wakandan forces are intercepting our signals, taking charge of our communications—"
"Great, just what I needed," Tony grumbled, his earpiece making jagged sounds.
"Stark," Steve's stern tone resonated, cutting through the static.
Tony released an exasperated sigh. "Alright, Cap. What's the occasion?"
"The question is, what brought you here?" James echoed through the intercom, angry and anxious.
James is here... Grace thought, the mere sound of his voice filling her like warm sunshine. His sudden appearance caused her body to numb and her throat to tighten. She remained silent, completely moveless in her seat.
"Unfortunately, I can't answer that question," Tony replied in his usual cheeky tone.
"We're tracking Silas," T'Challa's voice joined the conversation as he disembarked from his aircraft. "He owes me some explanations."
"Greetings, Your Majesty," Tony responded with his trademark charm. "By all means, go ahead and have him."
Sam intervened. "Hydra soldiers approaching from the South! They're coming in real fast, probably because of the serum. Silas must be hiding somewhere close."
T'Challa hummed. "I shall deal with him."
"Where's Grace?" James asked, his voice filled with worry and impatience.
"I don't know who you're talking about," Tony replied, feigning ignorance. He let out a frustrated sigh upon noticing the glint of Barnes' arm in the distance. The ex-soldier had joined the battle and he didn't look pleased. On the contrary, he was smashing one super soldier after the other, his face a rigid grimace.
"Don't play games with me! Is she aboard your jet?" James said and peered at the floating aircraft above him. "How can you bring her out on a mission?"
"She's a guest with a special request," Tony replied. "I'm assisting her."
After some digging in cement and metal, Tony emerged from the barrage of the ruins, clutching the invaluable suitcase in his hand. Nothing could stop him from snatching it, not even the sudden commotion. He was ready to fly away when two Hydra operatives lunged at him, coming out of nowhere. He had not expected that and as a result, he got punched and tossed aside like a discarded rag.
"More company? Seriously?" Tony muttered under his breath as he quickly regained his footing, countering their assaults with swift precision. He hurled himself toward the opponents, unleashing bursts of energy from his armed gauntlets.
"I'll provide backup, boss," Braylon declared, maneuvering the jet into a strategic combat position.
"Much appreciated, Babo," Tony said, his focus on the ongoing battle. Braylon swiftly joined the battle, his shots synchronized with those from Steve's jet and the combined forces of the Wakandans.
"Why isn't she responding? Grace?" James's voice reverberated through the intercom. "Grace!"
At the sound of her name coming out of his lips, she fidgeted, butterflies churning in her stomach. Pure terror enveloped her and she did the only thing she could think of and turned off her earpiece.
"Tsk..." Tony breathed out and checked the data on his screen. "You made her turn off her earpiece. Anyway, I'm taking charge. Fend off the Hydra agents while I do my stuff."
"No!" James cried out but it was all in vain. The signal was forcefully cut off.
▪️▪️▪️
Almost an hour had passed, the fight leaving them all panting and blinking through exhaustion. James hoisted himself from the ground and approached Tony, who had just removed his iron helmet, clutching a metal suitcase in hand. They had taken down the super soldiers, but Silas was once again attempting to escape and a serious decision had to be made. Cap and Sam were chasing after him.
"Is she up there?" James said, eyes wide and icy with panic.
"Why meet her?" Tony faced him and took a cautious step forward. "It was your choice to leave her behind."
"I need to see for myself that she's safe."
Tony was about to respond, but Sam interjected, "Hate to break it to you, but T'Challa and the Dora Milage are on Silas's tail. I had my eyes on them, but they refused my help."
"In that case, we should let the Wakandans handle it," Steve advised. "Capturing Silas is a matter of honor for them. It's best if we don't interfere."
"Agreed. My job here is done," Tony said, his thrusters preparing to take flight. Yet, James seized his collar, causing them both to hover in the air.
"I'm coming with you!"
"Seriously?" Tony grumbled, grappling with the added weight. With little choice left, he adjusted their trajectory, moving through the air at a more deliberate pace. When they set foot inside the jet, they were welcomed by Babo, but Grace was nowhere to be seen.
"Welcome aboard, boss," Braylon greeted them, his gaze shifting from Tony to the huge man beside him. "And who's this? If I may ask, where—"
"Step aside," James said and strode boldly, slightly shoving him and causing him to stumble back.
"You're being a little rude, don't you think?" Tony said, trailing closely behind as they made their way inside the jet, with Braylon in tow.
"I apologize..." James slowed his pace and looked at him. "I'm grateful for what you've done, but you shouldn't have brought her on a mission."
"It was her mission," Tony corrected. "And you'll be very thankful once you hear more about it."
"That can wait," James continued, resuming his determined stride. "Right now, I need to see her."
"I'm pretty sure she doesn't wish to see you," Babo said, unaware of how ill-advised his statement was.
"Don't test my patience." James clutched Braylon by the lapels of his suit and looked him dead in the eye. "I know Grace. She will see me."
"Braylon, don't provoke him. Go away." Tony gave Braylon a gentle shove then handed James the metal suitcase. "Give her this. She'll know what to do."
Bucky clutched the case tightly in his metal hand, his super soldier senses working on overload to locate Grace. Her faint scent and the rhythmic beat of her heart guided him, and when his gaze finally settled on her, a surge of relief and adoration swept through him. She stood there, safe and unharmed, as beautiful and soft as he remembered. But her eyes were weary, just like his.
Ironically, she waited for him at the very spot where he had abandoned her. A pang of guilt twisted in his gut at the realization. He took a few steps forward, and when she didn't flinch, he closed their distance. She raised her chin to glare at him, a thin stripe of air separating them.
"Give me the case," she said, attempting to appear brave and unaffected by him.
"Grace..." He set the bag down and whispered her name like a prayer. It was the only word he could utter and his voice shook uncontrollably. He just stared at her, his piercing blue eyes holding her captive.
Breathe... Grace reminded herself as the moments stretched between them. She couldn't move, breathless. His beautiful eyes were studying her, no longer striking blue but pale and worried. These were the only eyes that gave her the sense of security she had missed. She had never before experienced this fluttering sentiment, feeling as if one look from him was enough to crush all her defenses.
"I'm sorry," he said, sensing the rapid rise and fall of her chest.
"You're sorry?" she breathed in fake disbelief.
"I'm sorry I left you. I'm sorry for everything. I missed you." His gaze never wavered, and she felt the weight of his regret. "How long are you going to stay angry with me?"
She looked away, her heart conflicted. "I haven't decided yet."
"I missed you. I missed you so much..."
"I'm glad to hear that."
"I didn't know you could be so heartless."
"Heartless?" She let out a soft chuckle. "Between the two of us, you know very well who wears that title."
"Yes... and I paid for it dearly." His eyes plunged into despair. "I missed you. I missed you so much..."
She mumbled a hurried whisper under her breath, something he didn't quite catch. "What?"
"I said... I missed you, too," she muttered and gazed up at him, her eyes misty with tears.
"Oh, sweetness..."
He pulled her to him, his fingers curling around her with a possessive hold that stole her breath. But before she could voice her surprise, his mouth descended upon hers, capturing her in a kiss that held a raw, untamed hunger. She gasped, her initial protest melting away as his touch ignited a fire within her. Her soft lips were coaxed apart as he moaned her name and licked inside her mouth.
Her fingers instinctively found their way to his chest, clutching the fabric of his vest. The taste of him was intoxicating, his closeness overwhelming her senses. He pushed her back against the wall and realizing that he was getting way too bold with her, he broke away from her sweet tempting mouth.
"I'm sorry, I... I took it too far," he said, "fuck I can't. I can't stop!"
He kissed her again, swiping his tongue across her lips, parting her mouth and getting his head filled with her sweet taste. She responded eagerly, head tippling back in the cradle of his palms. She wrapped her arms around him and clung to him in desperation, small delectable moans escaping her as his tongue tasted her mouth, probing in between hot and quickening breaths.
"James—mmph... we must talk," she moaned in between breathless kisses and he replied with a hum, catching her bottom lip between his teeth.
"Please, don't pull away," came his whisper, soft and wanting. "Don't ever pull away."
"I won't," she said, her fingers tracing his unshaven jaw. "I'm here."
"I know, I just—" He tightened his hold around her waist, drawing her close. "Forgive me. Please. I'll never leave you again. Never."
"Leave me?" She squeezed his face in her palms. "I've got my eyes on you, Sergeant Barnes. If you ever—even for a moment—think about leaving me again, I swear I'll give you a piece of my mind."
She attempted to wiggle away, but he thrust her against his chest. "What are you doing?"
"You said I can't leave you. I won't ever let you go."

"This is my room?" Peter stares wide eyed at the room before him, "It's huge,” he runs inside and jumps on the bed, bouncing slightly, "this is super comfy.”
The room was simple, but classy, definitely on point with Tony's style. The walls were a medium gray, tan wood floors, and there was a small skylight above the bed. There was a king sized bed with the headboard against the farthest wall, it was complete with blue and gray sheets and some various pillows. A large rug was set on the floor at the foot of the bed, it was grey and had a weird blue and white type pattern. There was also a desk that was set against the same wall as the bed with a computer and some files. A dresser, bookstand, TV stand with a TV, and various plants were also placed around the room. There was also a connecting bathroom, which came with every room.
Peter's had his own room before, so this wasn't really shocking to him, it was more the fact that it was so big, he's never had a king sized bed before, or his own bathroom. He smiles up at the ceiling with closed eyes and runs his hands over the soft comforter. Maybe this whole Avenger thing wouldn't be as strenuous as he thought.
Daniela shakes her head, watching the smile form on his face, soon a small smile grew on her own. While she watches him, her mind starts to wonder, thinking about what their future might hold. His safety was now her responsibility and she felt that weight on her shoulders, but she's been in charge of others before, so it wasn't a new feeling. She just felt more responsible for Peter, probably because he was so young.
Daniela leans against the doorframe, "Yeah, typical Avenger package. You get your own room, bathroom, health benefits, your own suit, special tech, whole bunch of other stuff that I won't bore you with, Tony can do that.”
Peter opens his eyes and lifts his head up high enough so he can look at her, "And you're across the hall?”
"Yeah," she puts her hands in her pockets, "but that doesn't mean you can just burst into my room whenever. I'm your mentor, which means I'm here to help, but we still need some sort of boundaries, ok?” Peter nods and she pushes away from the door, "Alright, now listen,” she walks over to his desk and waves him over. He jumps off the bed and sits down at the desk, "just cause you're staying here doesn't mean you get to slack off of your college stuff, alright?" Peter nods, "The laptop is yours and Tony's already set up for facial recognition, so you just have to open it."
Peter opens the laptop, "How did he already set it up?" as soon as the screen turns on, the camera turns on, and then unlocks once it sees Peters face.
Daniela shrugs, "I don't know, I honestly just don't ask anymore."
Peter smiles at the laptop, "That's so cool, he's already got all the apps and stuff on here that I use for school.”
Daniela shifts her weight to one foot while crossing her arms, "Yeah, he's annoyingly knowledgable like that," it grows silent for a moment, then she feels eyes on her, "I should also warn you that leaving your door open can invite unwanted visitors."
"You knew I was here didn't you?”
Peter jumps a bit at the new voice and Daniela slowly turns around, meeting the soldiers gaze, “Another fair warning, Barnes likes to scare the newbies,” Bucky smirks slightly while leaning against Peter's bedroom wall, hands in his pockets, not taking his eyes off her, "happened to me a lot when I first got here.”
When Daniela first got to the Avengers compound, she was quiet and shy, kept to herself mostly, rarely left her room unless it was to get coffee and sit under her favorite tree. She's never been good around a lot of new people, it’s something she’s tried to work on to no avail. It took her months to really get use to the compound and feel comfortable with her new teammates. Everyone was a little cautious of her, they didn’t know the extent of her powers, so they sorta walked on eggshells when training her. However, Bucky was different, he never once treated her like she was fragile, he treated her as he would treat any other solider.
"You were such a good sport though,” Bucky says, “after a few days, I couldn't sneak up on you anymore,” he chuckles lightly and turns his gaze to Peter, "she being nice to you now?”
Peter stands up from the desk beaming at Daniela and elbows her side, “She's always nice to me,” she smiles at him then sticks her tongue out at Bucky playfully.
"She is,” Bucky crosses his arms and looks Daniela over, "then what was that back on the jet?”
"A momentary lapse in my temper,” she narrows her eyes at him, “happens sometimes.”
Bucky raises an eyebrow, "Maybe you need a way to relieve your pent-up frustration."
"Why do you think I spar with Steve?" she smiles innocently, "He's a challenge for me.”
He narrows his eyes, "I trained you first, don't forget that.”
"You guys don't train together anymore?" Peter jumps in.
“It’s, um, been a while,” Bucky smirks teasingly, his eyes showing a bit of mischief.
Daniela places her arm around Peter's shoulders— which earns a glare from Bucky, “I’ll let you in on a secret, Parker,” Peter nods while looking at the floor blushing ever so slightly, “I out grew him, needed more of a challenge.”
Daniela knows how to push everyone's buttons, it was one of her hidden talents, for some reason, she got a real kick out of it. She tried not to take it too far, but shit happens. Bucky rarely ever got mad at her anymore, so sometimes she actually tried to piss him off. Apparently today was going to be one of those days.
Bucky scoffs and pushes off from the wall with his foot, "You think you're so funny.”
Daniela smiles innocently back at the soldier, “Well, because I am,” Peter chuckles next to her, “see he thinks so too.”
Bucky only rolls his eyes, "Don't let her fool you, kid, she's not as tough as she lets on.”
"Bitch, please,” Daniela takes her arm off of Peter’s shoulders, "last time we spared," she points down to his right leg, "I gave you that scar. Ya know, the one that refuses to heal even with your stupid ass serum. It may have been unintentional and out of rage, but I still did it.”
Bucky continues to scowl down at her, "That doesn't mean you're tough, just means I let my guard down, for once.”
Unfortunately for Daniela, Bucky also knew how to piss her off, he enjoyed it too. The way she got all serious and her voice dropped slightly, it stirred something in him, he just didn't know what that meant. It’s not that they didn’t like each other, they were the best of friends, but sometimes their fights would escalate and they wouldn't speak to each other for a few days.
She takes a couple steps toward him, “You are testing my patience, Barnes.”
He in turn, takes a step forward, testing the waters of her temper, then looks down at her, and smirks challengingly, "Now that doesn't sound like me.”
He was so close, she could feel the heat radiating off him, which made her breath hitch slightly in her throat, but she continued to glare up at him anyway, ”It's you to a fucking T.”
Peter looks back and forth between the two soldiers, wondering if they were actually pissed off at each other or if this was just normal. He doesn’t know much about either of them really, they never talk about their personal life. Although, he does know that Daniela was a Sergeant in the Marines and Bucky was the same, but in the Army, and that they were both not the age they looked, other than that he’s pretty clueless. He also knows little about their life outside the team, but he has picked up on little things about their personality. Such as, Bucky doesn’t sleep much, he can tell that by the small dark circles under his eyes and they’re bloodshot almost constantly. He also seems to be extremely loyal to everyone on the team, and he’s even picked up on what topics to not talk about, like his life before and during Hydra. Daniela is freakishly similar, probably because of the whole military background and definitely some trauma. Daniela does differ though, the most prominent being that she actually has conversations with him. Over these past few months, Peter has noticed that Daniela has an awful temper, he’s seen it first hand, and he’s still not sure what pisses her off. As he’s watching the two argue, he’s not sure how Bucky is still standing and if it’ll stay that way.
Bucky lightly tugs on his bottom lip with his teeth and then opens his mouth to say something, but is interrupted by FRIDAY, "Sorry to interrupt, but Captain Rogers is wondering when you all will be joining them in the conference room?”
Still glaring at Bucky, Daniela answers her, "He said 15 minutes.”
"And it's been 20," FRIDAY answered.
“Shit," she shakes her head, "come on, Peter.”
**********
The three walk into the conference room to find the team all sitting around the table, clearly waiting on them.
"Nice of you all to finally join us,” Steve says crossing his arms, scowling at Daniela as she makes her way to a chair beside Rhodes.
"Sorry, Captain," she glares at Bucky, "Barnes delayed us,” Bucky chuckles as they take their seats around the table.
Rhodes sighs from beside her, “Please tell me there wasn’t another fight,” he looks across the table at Bucky, “I thought you guys were getting along again?”
Daniela chuckles and Rhodes look back to her, “Sorry, Dad.”
Everyone laughs lightly and Rhodes shakes his head, “I’m just trying to keep the peace around here.”
James Rhodes is one of the few people in the compound that is capable of calming everyone down at a moments notice and it's sorta weird, like it's his superpower. Usually, there's that one person who refuses to calm down, but when Rhodes enters the room, everyone stops acting crazy, he just has that presence about him. He's everyone's confidant, knows everyones secrets— but never leads on that he knows— and would give the shirt off his back for a friend.
“Really?” Clint says from across the table, “Where were you then last week when Wilson and Barnes started fighting over Pictionary? Could’a used ya.” There are various groans from around the table, remembering that horrible night.
The team tries to get together at least once every other week to either play a game or watch a movie. Each time, a different person picks a game or movie and the rest of them have to suffer through it. Most of the time there aren’t any incidents, but every once in a while certain people get too competitive. Most of the time it’s one of the boys, they’re all stubborn and occasionally things get out of hand.
Wanda stares at the wall and speaks, “Well, at least I know never to pick that again.”
Steve sighs and then looks to Peter, "Alright, Parker," he said standing up and approaching the head of the table, "since you're gonna be full time with us from now on, we need to brief you on what we really do around here,” he crosses his arms and furrows his brows together, "right now, we do mostly hostage situations, take out the remaining Hydra bases, bust arms dealers, and occasionally, SHIELD sends us out to do more specialized missions."
"And the rare alien invasion,” Tony shrugs.
Steve turns to Tony and nods, “Um, right,” Steve then looks back to Peter and continues, "for now, Velikov and you are just gonna focus on training. We know you can handle yourself for the most part, be we just want to make sure that you'll be safe out there, so she's going to give you some refined training,” he then looks to Daniela, "you'll stay back on missions unless we absolutely need you.”
"Are you shittin' me?" Daniela leans forward and rests her hands on the table, "He'd be fine by himself while I'm gone. He doesn't need a constant babysitter.”
"He does for now,” Tony counters, "just until he gets use to the place," he stands up from his chair and walks over next to Steve, "we're not saying you're never going on missions, it's just temporary.”
Daniela takes a deep breath and sits back in her chair, “Fine,” she knew when to keep her mouth shut— well, sometimes anyway.
"That's it,” Natasha speaks up from across the table causing Daniela to look at her, "just like that and you agree with them?" She then turns her attention to Steve and Tony, "See, I think it's bullshit. We need her out there, at least I do, she covers my ass better than anyone.”
Daniela smirks down at the table. Natasha was right, Daniela had saved her ass countless times, along with the others. Not on pure luck, like Sam would have some believe, she was good at what she did, her powers usually came in handy. They made her reflexes a little faster and she seemed to always know when something wasn’t right. Although, that probably has something to do with her military training and the fact that she'd been fighting Hydra for so long.
“I’m with Nat,” Clint said from beside Natasha, “it just wouldn’t be the same without frosty.”
Daniela glares at Clint, “You’re hilarious, Barton.”
He smiles and looks to Tony, “You know that if we don’t have her, your ass would be on the line too, she covers all of us. It’s like she has a weird sixth sense of something.”
"Do you even realize that my suits can help? What do you think I made them for,” Tony glares at Clint, "to stand around and look pretty?”
Daniela tilts her head and looks at Tony, "Well obviously," she shrugs and crosses her arms, "but I thought you made them 'cause you were lonely,” Peter snickers next to her, which makes her turn to him and wink.
Tony looks to Peter, which makes him fall silent, and then he focuses back on Daniela, "Don't start with me.”
She looks back to him and rolls her eyes, “Anyway, if Cap doesn't want me there, I won't go. I'm not one to disobey direct orders.”
"Ok," Bucky— who so far had been extremely silent— leans forward in his chair, focusing on Daniela, "I know for a fact that that's bullshit.”
"From the Captain,” she leans forward in her chair, “and I disobeyed your orders one time, Barnes.”
“And if it wasn’t for me, you’d be dead,” he taps his metal fingers on the desk, narrowing his gaze at her.
It was still a touchy subject with the two of them, even though it happened a year ago. Daniela had already apologized and moved on, but Bucky isn't one to let things go so easily, especially when it has to do with someone's safety. He still felt responsible for her, even though she was no longer his trainee, he still cared about her deeply.
Daniela narrows her eyes at him and grits her teeth, “Thank you for the reminder.”
Bucky leans back in his chair and crosses his arms, but says nothing, not taking his eyes off her. It made Daniela uncomfortable, the way his eyes looked her over, like prey, but she didn't change her expression, she didn't want him to know how it affected her. He knew though, hearing her heart beat pick up, her breathing becoming uneven. He knew she was nervous, they hadn't had a serious fight in months, and he wanted to keep it that way. As much as he loved it when she got angry, it usually followed with them not speaking for days, and that he hated.
“Ok..." Steve says awkwardly, making Daniela look back to him, "look, Velikov, if we need you, you'll go. Just for now, focus on training the kid.”
“Can do,” she answers.
Tony rolls his eyes and turns to Peter, "Parker," Peter’s brows go up at the sound of his name, "you're gonna be with me today. You’ll start training with Daniela tomorrow morning.”
His face lit up into a big grin causing everyone else to let out a small chuckle, “Okay!"
"Velikov," Daniela looks from Peter to Steve and raises a brow, “you’ll do drills today.”
“Alright," she crosses her arms and leans back in her chair.
“With a slight change,” Steve grins and Daniela raises an eyebrow, "I think it's time you and Buck start training together again. You're getting a little rusty and he can help you better than I can.”
She raises a hand and points her index finger to the sky, “Um, formal protest.”
"Denied," Bucky says from across the table.
Without looking at him, she retorts, "Wasn't talking to you.”
Steve shakes his head, "He's still your superior, Velikov,” he puts both hands on the table, leaning in, and focusing on her, "we've talked about this. I don't need this from you.”
She puts her hand down and grits her teeth, “Yes, sir.”
"Alright then,” Steve stands back up and looks over the group, "nice talk everyone.”
Daniela wrinkles her nose in frustration as she stands up and turns to Peter, "I'll see you later, Parker,” she rests her hand on his shoulder, “be good to Tony, ok?”
He smiles and sets his hand over hers, ”I have to, Dani,” he chuckles and walks out the door, following Tony.
It's just Bucky and Daniela left in the room now, Bucky is the first to speak, "Alright, Velikov," she looks over and meets Bucky's gaze from across the table, "what's stuck up your ass today?”
Her eyebrows go up at his sudden forwardness, “Pardon?”
"You can't bullshit me," he walks around the table and stands in front of her, "something's going on in that pretty little head of yours. What is it?”
She chuckles slightly to hid the butterflies in her stomach, “Not sure I wanna talk about it right now,” she fixes her shirt, "can we just go and get this over with?”

Lightning Over the Sea
COMPLETE - Part One of the series All links go to the full chapters on Archive of Our Own
You have spent centuries consolidating power - usually subtly - sometimes a little more brazenly. You were most recently made a Queen of the Dark Fae - but you didn’t start out that way. You were once only a siren, singing your song to sailors passing by in Alfheim, feeding on their longing for you. But it wasn’t enough for you, and you spent the past many centuries (honestly, you’ve lost count) building your powers and abilities to a level that you are not even sure of at this point. You are essentially a Goddess, here on Midgard. You’re a little scared to test the limits, but this is a comfort to you. No one will ever take advantage of you again without your consent.
But that’s another story for another day.
This is the story of how you ended up teaming up with The Avengers and meeting the man who would change everything.
Chapter One: Who the Hell is that Woman?!
Chapter Two: Was that an innuendo, Captain?
Chapter Three: Well met, your majesty.
Chapter Four: Can we keep her?
Chapter Five: Or maybe you could stay right here, and we could both get a little…' release'?
Chapter Six: Chill out, Hawkeye.
Chapter Seven: We are not people, my love. We are gods.
Chapter Eight: I’m doing my best to want you less. So don’t make it more difficult.
Chapter Nine: I can only promise right now.
Chapter Ten: How thoroughly are you planning to test me, Captain? Because I tend to use all of my skills on the battlefield.
Chapter Eleven: All this violence is a real turn-on and all, but can you please stop and explain to me what the hell is going on?
Chapter Twelve: It begins on a beautiful day in Alfheim when an innocent young prince stumbles upon a devious Siren...
Chapter Thirteen: Do you delight so much in torturing me?
Chapter Fourteen: What they mean to say is they almost fucked my entire building down
Chapter Fifteen: "I didn't realize you still cared so much, love.” “Pfff, yes you did."
Chapter Sixteen: I will make you mine on a deeper level than you ever thought possible. It is up to you if you will let it ruin you or save you.
Chapter Seventeen: I can not escape you.
Chapter Eighteen: In my experience, it is best to stay away from the green one.
Chapter Nineteen: I don’t know whether I should be impressed or terrified.
Chapter Twenty: I don't know who you think you are, bub, but you are not my friend.
Chapter Twenty-One: Do your worst, Odinson.
Chapter Twenty-Two: Why do I know you?
Chapter Twenty-Three: The pleasure is all mine.
Chapter Twenty-Four: I think I would crawl through all of Hel and back if it led me to your arms.
Chapter Twenty-Five: "Can I go now? I have a date with a pretty girl." Chapter Twenty-Six: "Could you be more vague and mysterious about it?" Bonus: Special Edition of the Daily Journal

i dont believe in love at first sight... but god-damn - part one
pairing: buck barnes x reader
summary: its not normal for bucky to instantly feel something for a women. but you're just too good to ignore...
includes: strangers to lovers, inferred female reader (pronouns, descriptions, etc), implied smut?, alcohol intoxication, drinking, steve rogers ofc, story doesnt really follow any movie plots so no spoliers!, all characters are of drinking age, pet names?: sweetheart, doll
the night has barely even started and you're already halfway drunk, laughing over the loud music with your friend at the bar. your best friend, steve, orders another round and turns to you.
"are we just gonna sit here all night or are you finally gonna find someone to go home with?" steve cocks his head playfully and smiles, his obvious playful demeanor poking right through.
you roll your eyes, taking a sip of your drink, "psh. you really think anyone here wants me? plus we're in the bad part of town, i'd probably get murdered."
"not necessarily, i know plenty of good people that go here often. and you know, actually, i think today's the day that my friend bucky comes and grabs a couple drinks."
you smile, "ahh the infamous bucky, i would love to meet him, he's all you used to talk about after all."
steve agrees with you that if bucky shows up he'll introduce you, so you lay back on the drinks just in case you like the guy.
an hour or so pass with you a steve laughing about god knows what and getting excited when one of you twos favorite songs play. you almost forget you might be meeting bucky when steves face lights up towards the door and waves.
"hey bucky! over here!" steve motions for bucky to join the two of you.
you turn around and your heart pounds, the man walking over is gorgeous, even the way he walks over to the two of you sends heat to your face.
buckys not so quick to notice you, more focussed on asking his friend why he's here. but when he finally notices you, his sentence falters. his eyes travel to all parts of you, your hair framing your face perfectly, and the way your outfit showed off the features of your body had him almost drooling. he looks away quickly though, finishing his sentence.
steve smiles and nudges you with his shoulder, "y/n and i like to go here sometimes after work, gets the nerves to settle ya' know?"
bucky nods, turning his head to make eye contact with you, "y/n, huh? never heard of her, are you two..."
steve nervously laughs, "no,no. just friends. she is looking, though."
you roll your eyes, embarrassed. meanwhile, bucky is looking you over again, his own mind confused on why he's feeling this way.
steve exchanges a glance between the two of you, sipping his drink, "buttt i do know that buck is very 'hard to get' in that area so sorry y/n, he's probably not interested."
you gasp and shoot him a look, "i never said anything about being into him," you glance at bucky, "no offense."
"none taken sweetheart." your heart basically stops at the nickname, but you power through and take a sip of your drink while steve laughs.
"okay okay, sorry. how about we order some more drinks? gotta catch you up to speed james." steve smiles and orders more drinks for the three of you.
the drinks continue, so many rounds that you stopped counting after steve both you and bucky to the dance floor. the three of you danced pitifully, laughing whenever a new song played and the style of dance was altered.
after about twenty minutes of this, you left steve and bucky and sat down at a nearby booth, laying your head agasint the table, this hangover was gonna suck.
"tired already?" buckys deep voice sent shivers down your spine.
you lifted your head and groaned, "don't pay me any mind, i'm sure steve needs a dance partner." i look over to steve who's still going at it for whatever reason.
bucky scoffs a little, "you know hes not even drunk right? the sss makes it so he can't."
"of course i know, i think he has the placebo effect though, whatever makes him happy i guess." you smile, glad at least someone can have fun without the repercussions the next morning.
there's a moment of silence between the two of you. bucky looks down at you, wearing a subtle smirk that you can't decipher if it's a drunken one or something more than that.
bucky knows he feels something for you, but he's trying so hard to fight it.
james buchanan barnes does not believe in love at first sight.
but there you were, you're unmistakably stunning, every thing about you make bucky want more. all he knew was your name, and he still wanted you.
he clears his throat, using it as a way to clear his thoughts, "so you and steve, you guys aren't a thing? that's a surprise actually, the way he looks at you and all." there's a slight hint of jealously in his voice, even though he has no reason to be jealous.
you raise your eyebrow, baffled that someone would even think that, there's no way there's anything between the two of you, "we definitely are not a thing, steve's like my brother."
bucky nods and moves to sit down across from you, the intoxication beginning to mess with his head.
you giggle, "you and steve aren't a thing either?" you smile playfully.
"haha. you're funny." bucky says sarcastically, "no, we just go way back." he returns your smile, making your heart speed up.
you both can hear steve pleading the two of you to come back and dance. bucky makes eye contact with you then bursts out laughing, "i guess we should go and dance with him." he says between chuckles while he gets up and walks back to the dance floor. you sigh and follow him, a headache starting to form in your temples.
for whatever reason, captian america himself has amazing dance skills when it comes down to it. you and bucky cheer him on, joining in with him every so often. but it comes to the points where you're drunkenly swaying to the music, right against buckys front side.
you don't essentially realize how close you two are until you turn around and you're inches from his face.
you both pause for a beat, your breaths fanning out onto each others faces. bucky face is hot, whatever you did with your hips has his pants growing tighter by the second. but he holds himself together and hovers his hands above your waist.
"may i?"
you pause, but then nod, figuring it was harmless. he places his hands on your waist, surprisingly gentle, and sways to the music with you.
steve laughs, "jeez that didn't take long, thank god." he winks and walks over to a group of girls that has just walked in.
before you know it, you and bucky are stumbling out of the bar, leaving steve behind. your lips are crashing together as the both of you try to make it to buckys car.
you're desperate at this point, the alchol making you want to commit all types of unholy. you hold on the the collar of his shirt, kissing him deeply.
"now hold on doll, this is a public parking lot, let's go somewhere more private." you reach the car and bucky unlocks it, opening the car door for you.
you slide in and he closes the door, walking over the the other side and getting in.
bucky starts the car and starts to drive off, not worried about his drunken state. his right hand leaves the steering wheel and finds your thigh.
inching higher. and higher.
at this point you've lost your breath, biting your lip as your senses light up, little fireworks going off in your body.
finally, bucky pulls off onto a back road and stops the car, his hands moving further up onto your waist, pulling you over to his side and pulling you into another deep kiss.
his hands find your thighs again and your heart pounds, grinding down on his lap.
bucky chuckles, "needy are we? let me help you out then, sweetheart."
a/n: there is gonna be a part twooo so stay tuned for that
im not very good at writing the slow shit so i apologize if this is really boring but i think i'll improve in the next part because it is my area of expertise...

Dugan walked down the hall toward James’ office. The classic Rococo furniture contrasted with what the newer generation of the family preferred. But they would never change it. Because what the Barnes family loved more than their outdated furniture was tradition.
They were immutable. The habit of the institution was ingrained into them as young as five years old. For James “Bucky” Barnes- probably younger because he was set to inherit the family business.
Dugan walked in as a lifeless body was being dragged out. The face was unrecognizable as the only feature standing out was a backward initial ‘J.B.’ imprinted on the man’s cheek.
Steve nodded as he saw Dugan approach. He held out his hands towards him in greeting. “Dugan, how are you, my man? Or should I still call you DumDum?” Steve chuckled.
James was watching through the window’s reflection as smoke from his cigar blew out from his thin lips. His other hand, adorned with bloodied rings, nursed a half-filled glass of bourbon.
“You’re never gonna let me live that down, Rogers? I was four!” Bucky said talking to Steve’s reflection.
“And you’ve been calling him that ever since.” Dugan smiled wearily as he took Steve’s hand and greeted him. He didn’t want to end up like the faceless man that was dragged out moments before.
“Why are you here?” Bucky asked him suspiciously. “You were supposed to be watching the bachelorette party.” He turned around, looking straight at Dugan.
“Bucky, you’re not gonna like this,” Dugan answered, looking sideways at Steve.
“Where’s my fiancé, Dugan?” James asked level toned. Dugan took a moment to decide which information he should start with first. “WHERE IS SHE?!” Bucky yelled and Dugan flinched.
“She went into Odinson territory. Got into one of his clubs. I could only watch from the border. I left Junior behind to watch and inform me when she and her friends come out.”
“You left the protection of floricica mea to a greenie? WHY WAS SHE EVEN FUCKING THERE?!”
“Buck, I’m sorry. I tried…” Dugan started. Bucky grabbed his collar and pushed him up against the wall.
“And if something happens to her, Dugan? If she gets kidnapped? What happens? Will you be sorry then too?” Bucky let go of his shirt. “Go back and tell me as soon as she comes out. Grab the entire party and send them home. Do you understand me?”
“Yes, boss,”
“Bring Rose and Lia here!”
“Yes, boss,” Dugan quickly accepted his command and left. Bucky was seething. He knew of your history with the older Odinson brother. Why the fuck would you go there?
“Buck, I’m sure there’s an explanation,” Steve tried to placate him. “Maybe she didn’t know.”
Bucky contemplated, then sighed. “No. That’s bullshit. She knows the boundaries, at least.” He downed the rest of his whiskey and slammed it on his desk reaching for the decanter. Steve watched him from the corners of his eyes as he sipped his drink slowly. He knew Bucky could be temperamental…at best. You were an angel for having fallen in love with him.
“Buck, she’s madly in love with you. YOU! You crazy, fucked-up psycho. She’s a saint for doing so. And for all you know, it could’ve been Lia who suggested it. She wouldn’t know where the borders are.”
“Lia can be rebellious,” Bucky noted.
“She’s naïve. Which in our line of work, can be dangerous.” Steve answered back.
“She didn’t grow up in the life.”
“Does she know? That you’re…about your family business?” Steve waved his fingers around.
“If she doesn’t, I think she suspects. She’s smart. Or Rose told her. They tell each other everything.”
“That whole family has brains. How’d you manage to snag Strange’s daughter anyway?” Steve asked finishing his drink. “Does that mean The Hospital isn’t neutral anymore?”
“Strange won’t let me anywhere near The Hospital unless I’m on my deathbed.”
“Hmm.” Steve nodded, knowing he wouldn’t get any more info other than that from his long-time friend.
You stepped out into the cold evening air, a slight breeze chilling the night. Bucky was not gonna like this. If you learned anything by now, you knew that Dugan had sent word to him that your bachelorette party wandered into Odinson territory and that he would be furious.
You didn’t know this was one of Thor’s clubs. You just followed your bridesmaid’s lead, talking about a brand-new spot that was trending. The lot of you had gone from one bar to another. Always within James’s borders of protection. You tried to steer the party back, but your cousin, Lia wanted to see it. Lord knows you can’t say no to her and her damn puppy eyes.
You thought it would be ok, one quick drink and lay low so you don’t gather attention. It wasn’t until you saw Lia kissing Loki Odinson, of all people, that you realized you were going to be in trouble.
You walked out onto the breezy summer night and before Lia could step foot on the concrete, Junior had already come up to you and your friends.
“Ma’am,” was all he said.
“He’s not happy, isn’t he?” you asked quietly.
“No, he’s not,” Dugan answered from behind Junior. “He’s furious.”
“I’m sorry Duggy. I didn’t know,” you said out of earshot from your friends. You were the only one who could call him that and make it sound endearing. You tried to channel Lia and gave him your sweetest puppy-eyed face.
“Well maybe you can get away with that, but I can’t. C’mon, he wants you guys to end the night,” Dugan ordered, motioning you guys back to two large SUV’s waiting on the curb.
In all honesty, you were glad that the night was ending. Aside from Lia, everyone there just tolerated you. They were there because your fiancé was “Bucky” Barnes and wanted to make advantageous connections with his future wife. They weren’t there for you.
After dropping the two of you off at Bucky’s house, Dugan set off to drop off the rest of your bachelorette party. Holding your hand, Lia followed you down the hall into James’ grand office. She gave your hand a heartfelt squeeze. Making sure you were all right.
“I’m sorry, Rose. Did I get us in trouble?”
“No. No, it’s all right,” you squeezed her hand back. “Even if Bucky is mad, what’s he gonna do? We didn’t do anything wrong.” You put on a brave face. You knew what kind of temper he had. It was never directed at you, but you’ve heard the cries of the men that have wronged him. He tried to shield you the best he could, but you were around it all your life. Especially since your father was the neutral doctor for all the families.
The scent of fresh cedar and tobacco hit your senses as soon as you entered his office. You froze for a half second. A habit you did involuntarily whenever you saw James. Not because you were frightened, but because his presence, his undeniable charisma always made you pause.
Lia walked up to him and kissed him on the cheek. She held his hand and whispered, not too quietly, “Be nice. Or I’ll have to hurt you!”
“I’m always nice!” Bucky played offended. “C’mon. Have I ever not been nice?” he lovingly touched her nose with the tip of his finger and Lia giggled. You were so happy that they got along. Lia was hesitant about him at first, but she saw how you looked at him with love and devotion in your eyes. She saw how happy you were and how much you were yourself whenever you were around Bucky.
Most importantly, she saw how completely and madly in love Bucky was with you. How he would move heaven and earth for you to be happy. That was what won her over.
“Rogers, why don’t you take Lia here for a walk in the gardens? I need to speak to my future wife,” James calmly ordered. Both Steve and Lia looked at you. Worry and wistful glee warring on their faces. Steve held out his arms and Lia took them. Their footsteps echoed on the hardwood floors as they left the room.
A quietly charged moment went by, and all James had done was stare at you. The deep-set brows on his face downturned in anger. Or worry? Neither was good when it came to Bucky.
You crossed the small space in between you and placed your hands on his chest. He lifted his head and looked down at you. His devastating features only got more handsome as he tried to be indifferent and stoic. His jaw was set, his nose flared and his eyes narrowed at the innocent cherubic features you were trying to portray.
His fingers grabbed your chin gently and forced you to look into his eyes. “Of all the places, Roza, why his?!” You heard his deep Romanian accent come forth. A shiver ran down your body, making your stomach curl in desire. His accent was only obvious when he felt a deep emotion. You recounted all the times that voice came out in the throws of passion as he took you over and over again.
“I didn’t know, Bucky. Honestly. I was just following the girls. They wanted to try out a new place. Some place they hadn’t been before, and I was just catching up with Lia. I didn’t notice that we had gone into Odinson territory. Or that Dugan had stopped following us.” You caressed your hands up and down his chest.
“HIS PLACE, ROSE?! Of all the clubs it was his place!” he held on to your hands and stopped your caress.
“Bucky! It’s over. You know that it is. He never loved me. Not like you!”
“Oh, don’t start comparing me to that bastard!” he let go of your hands and moved away in anger.
“It’s true!” you yelled out. “I was just something to pass the time for him. I…”
“Do you think that makes me feel any better?”
“Let me finish!” You stomped your foot. Bucky picked up his glass of whiskey and threw it against the wall from your opposite direction. You didn’t let it faze you as you slowly walked over to him. His anger dissipated with your every step. “He didn’t mean anything to me either Bucky. He was a tool. To anger my father. But you…you are the love of my life. The one I chose to spend the rest of my life with. I hadn’t even thought about him until tonight when I found out where we were.” You said placing your hands in soothing circles over his chest.
“Did you see him tonight?” he snarled.
“No.” You answered looking into his eyes so he would know you weren’t lying.
“Did he see you?”
“I honestly don’t know. I was too busy dancing with Lia.” You tried to give him your best apologetic face. You peppered small kisses onto his cheek and made your way to his lips. You wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer to you, wanting him to open up and kiss you back. “What can I do to prove to you that I love you, dragostea meu, my love?”
Bucky stood there stubborn, yet slowly losing his resolve. Your soft lips on any part of his skin always excited him. “No one makes me weak like you do,” he said grabbing your waist. “Or so fucking angry!” James growled at the last word.
He pushed you up against his desk. The familiar cold mahogany sends chills up your skin as he picks you up by your waist and sits you down. He pulls up his chair and sits. He lounges in it with a slight swivel as his eyes travel the length of your body. He spreads his legs, showcasing the hard bulge he’s been trying to conceal.
“James, I really am sorry…”
“Shh. Spread them for me, sweetheart. One leg on each armrest,” he commanded as he scoots closer. You quietly and slowly open your legs and lean back as you placed your strappy heels on the armrest of his chair. The hem of your dress rides further up your waist and you almost whimper from his stare. That hungry look in his eyes, as if he found something he would kill for. Something he would die for.
“You’re so beautiful spread out for me like this Roza. Ready and willing.” He traced his fingers on the outside of your calves. His warm lips pushed against your supple thighs, slowly inching closer and closer to where you wanted him most.
“Tell me, Roza, did he ever worship you like this?” his nose grazed against the hood of your clit, sending shivers throughout your body. His tongue traced the seam of your panties and made you open wider. “Answer me, sweetheart.” He grabbed you and pulled you closer to his face. He looked up at you, but your head was thrown back in ecstasy, savoring him between your legs.
“N-no. Never,” you gasped as his mouth latched on to your sensitive nub. The thin fabric of your panties stopped his tongue from entering further. You pushed yourself closer to him. But he held you still, teasing you, knowing you wanted more.
“Mmm. This little number you have on is beautiful. Did I buy this for you?” you shook your head no. He traced his fingers on the gusset of your panties and pulled to a snap. You yelped in slight shock, more than pain. “Hmm. And these shoes?” Bucky asked as his hands pulled your panties off and traveled the length of your legs down to your ankles.
“I bought them, baby.” You answered. Bucky stood up slowly and leaned over you on the desk. He trapped you in between his muscular frame as he looked down at your lips. He kissed you fervidly. All teeth and tongue, leaving you gasping for air. His lips roamed down to your collar, and he bit the chain hanging on your neck.
“And this? Who bought this?” he said licking the bruise he just made.
“I did.” You answered. “I bought it for myself.”
“So you don’t need anyone, do you floricica mea? You certainly don’t need that low-life prick who couldn’t even bother to get on his knees and worship you like the goddess you are.” His head dipped lower, trailing his tongue in between your breasts. “Which means you don’t need me either, do you?”
“No, I don’t need you.” You whispered. Bucky paused and stared deep into your eyes. He started pulling away, but you grabbed his face between your hands and pulled it back up to yours. “I don’t need you. Or your money.” You brushed your lips against his. “But I want you. I want you Bucky Barnes! In every way and in every chance I get.” You kissed him, sucking on his top lip, as he wrapped his arms around your waist.
You reached for his belt, undoing the fastening and making quick work of his zipper. Your hand brushed up against his hard length, feeling him throb through his boxers. Your mouth salivated at the thought of his arousal.
“Do you see what you do to me, Roza?”
“Oh, Bucky…” you whimpered as you pushed him back down to his office chair. He grunted when he hit the cushion and you swiftly placed yourself in between his legs. He stared up at you with ravenous eyes, licking his lips as he watched you lower yourself onto your knees. “Let me prove to you how much I want you.”
Bucky leaned forward to capture your lips. Your fingers unbuttoned his shirt one by one tracing the hard muscle underneath. You dipped your fingers under the hem of his boxers and pulled them down, his large erection springing free from the tight confines of his pants. He groaned as you fisted him, your fingers barely closing around his large girth.
You licked the tip, tasting him. “Fuck,” he growled as his head rolled back. You continued to give him small licks, kissing and sucking down the length of his cock. Your hand moved to a rhythmic pace as you softly bit the base of his shaft, sending bolts of pleasure up his spine. You licked your way back up to the end and swallowed his tip. You could see his knuckles clenched and white on the armrest of the chair.
“Don’t tease me now. Show me how much you need me. How much you want me.” He said, one hand holding the side of your face. You moaned, opening your mouth wider and sticking your tongue out further. You took him in slowly. Inch by inch until his cock hit the back of your throat. “Look at me while you suck my cock.”
You looked up to see his gorgeous face curled in pleasure. Your eyes watering as he slowly pushed deeper into your throat making you gag. He pulled out slowly, savoring your lips around his girth. “Fuck,” he panted as he saw himself coated in your saliva. “That’s a good girl.” He thrust back into your mouth. “A good fuckin’ girl.”
You continued to bob your head up and down. Your hand worked in tandem with your mouth. All you could hear was the gulp and swallow of your mouth mixed with Bucky’s shameless, feral moans. Even after holding the base of his cock, he felt heavy in your mouth as you dragged him faster and faster through your lips.
“St-stop,” he whimpered into the air. But you kept going. “Stop, Rose.” But you couldn’t. He chuckled at your eagerness. With one hand on your head, he pulled you off his hard cock as it bounced back toward his stomach. “Naughty little Roza” He smiled as he pulled your hair up to look at him. “I didn’t know I was going to marry such a slut.”
His words sent a chill throughout your body. He always danced that fine line between praise and degradation that always made you weak. “Bucky,” you whined.
“I know, sweetheart. I know. You need my cock inside you, don’t you?” You nodded as you turned your head licking his wrist that was holding your hair. “Stand by my desk and bend over for me. Hands behind your back.” He commanded.
You quickly complied, moving to stand by his desk and bend over it. You spread your legs apart putting most of your weight on the desk. The cold mahogany felt like ice against your heated face. You placed your hands behind your back and slowly pulled your dress up, showing him your dripping cunt. You heard the sound of his buckle as he stood. “You’re such a good little slut for me aren’t you?” Bucky slid two of his fingers through your folds, teasing you.
“Only for you, Bucky.”
“Only for me,’ she says.” There was an edge to his voice that made you nervous.
“Only you.” You repeated.
“Oh, floricica mea, you have no idea what I would do for you.” He spanked your ass, causing you to cry out in shock. He grabbed both of your wrists in one of his hands and secured them on your back. With his other hand, he lined up his cock at your entrance.
“You have no idea what I would do to anyone who ever touched you,” he slammed into your heated core making both of you cry out at the same time. Bucky bent over you, his hot breath tickling your ear as he said, “You are mine, Rosaline,” he growled. “MINE. I’m gonna make sure you forget that he ever existed.” He slammed further against you making you scream. A gargled plea between pain and pleasure.
Bucky stood back up and began thrusting his hips inside you. “…Ohfuck…God Bucky!...”
“That’s it, baby girl, say my name.”
“…B-bu…” you panted. With every thrust, every push, you felt the weight of his large cock pressing inside you. “…bucky…youfeelsogood…so good baby…” He took you hard and rough, keeping your chest pressed down onto the desk.
“You like that, sweetheart? You like my hard cock inside that tight pussy of yours?” he asked out of breath. You nodded your head, unable to make any coherent words other than grunts and moans. “Then say my name,” he growled.
“Bucky! yesyesyes…oh!Bucky…” You screamed over and over again. Every thrust had you yelling his name until it was the only thing you could say. Your legs started shaking. He could feel you squeeze him hard, and he knew he wouldn’t last much longer.
“Give it to me baby. Come all over my cock.” And with his words, you screamed out the pleasure that he built up in your body. Bucky grunted as he stilled inside you. “Squeeze me harder, baby.” And somehow you obeyed as incoherent as you were.
When Bucky finished inside you, he pulled out slowly, watching his spent drip down your thighs. “Can you walk baby girl?” he said massaging your shoulders as you stood up slowly. You had a dazed look in your eyes as you shook your head. He picked you up bridal style and carried you down the hall to your bedroom. You giggled and made small love bites on his neck. “Just as well. I’m not finished with you yet.”

The Interview - Chapter 5
The Interview - A Captain America Fanfic
Masterlist PREVIOUS //
Rating: E
Warnings: nothing really
Pairing: Steve Rogers x OFC Melody Danes
Word Count: 2040
Summary: Melody Danes gets the break of a lifetime when as a lowly intern, she’s assigned to write a profile piece on Captain America. Steve Rogers is a hard man not to fall for and as she and Melody get closer and Melody’s career takes off, jealousy leads to sabotage, and the potential to bring her whole world crashing down.
Chapter 5
The excitement was thick in the air as Melody and Bobbi rode the elevator up to the party deck of the Avengers Tower. Bobbi looked gorgeous in a black lace cocktail dress and knee-high boots with the buckles she’d picked up from the thrift store. Melody wore a dark blue satin jumpsuit with slits up the legs that had black a lace strip both at the slits and along the armholes. She’d paired it with a pair of sandals and her favorite jewelry and she was feeling good about herself.
It was both thrilling and nerve-wracking thinking she would see not just Steve Rogers, but all the Avengers in party mode. What eclipsed all of those feelings was her excitement and nerves about getting to socialize with Steve outside of the confines of interviewing him.
The elevator doors slid open to a room that resembled a cross between a bar and a nightclub. The doors opened into a large open area with a bar to the left and a pool table to the right. There were angular gray couches set up in squares up the floor and a set of stairs that led up to the huge windows that looked out over the city. More couches were set up at the raised platform. There were three more sections above with a floating staircase on each side leading to the balconies. Each staircase ran beside a sloped window that let her see the room beyond, most of which looked down at workshops and hangers for the jets. Below her feet were rugs sitting on thick glass or black marble tiles that ran in patterns. Through the glass, she could see the Quinjets and rows of Iron Legion. There were people everywhere, most of whom she didn’t recognize, but she did spot Natasha Romanoff and Tony Stark at the bar and Thor was up on the raised platform holding the attention of a whole group of people.
“Oh my god,” Bobbi exclaimed as she walked into the room. “This is unreal! I'm in a room with an actual god!”
Melody scanned the room looking for Steve, but he spotted her first and waved to her from the other side of the room.
“If you want some time alone with the good captain, just give me a signal. I don’t know, tug on your earring or something,” Bobbi said, as the two women approached him.
“I’m not going to abandon you in a party where you don’t know anyone,” Melody argued, nudging her.
“Don’t you worry about me,” Bobbi assured her. “I make friends everywhere I go.”
Melody wanted to argue with her more, but she had already reached Steve. He was standing with two easily recognizable people. On his left was Sam Wilson, dressed in black jeans and a black jacket of a deep red button-up shirt, and on his right was James Barnes dressed from the neck down in black.
Steve kissed her cheek in greeting. “You made it.”
“Are you kidding?” she said. “How could I miss a genuine Tony Stark party?”
Steve chuckled. “I’d give anything to be allowed to miss one,” he joked. “These are my friends, Sam and Bucky,” he added, gesturing to his friends. “Sam, Bucky, this is Melody the woman from the DB that’s been interviewing me.”
“It’s a real pleasure to meet you,” she said, shaking their hands and gesturing to Bobbi. “This is my cousin, Bobbi. We live together on the Upper West Side.”
“And what do you do, Bobbi?” Sam asked.
“I’m an actor. And I also bartend on the side,” she answered.
“Would you have been in anything I might have seen?” Sam asked.
“That depends,” Bobbi answered. “Have you ever been to the Vampire Dinner Theatre in the East Village?”
“I haven't,” Sam said. “But maybe I should.”
“It's a lot of fun,” Bobbi said. “Come sometime.”
Sam laughed and nodded. “So, can we get you ladies a drink?”
They followed the men down to the bar where Tony Stark was making drinks and Natasha Romanoff sat on a bar stool with her legs crossed beside a dark-haired woman in a black pantsuit. She looked stunning in a slinky black dress with a shrug over her shoulders that looked like she’d draped herself in a spider web, while Tony wore a black three-piece suit with a red tie. He’d taken the jacket off and it was hanging at the end of the bar. Tony’s sleeves were rolled up as he shook a drink in a shaker.
“Cap! Is this the journalist?” Tony said, sidling up toward Melody.
“It is,” Steve said. “Melody, this is Tony.”
Tony leaned over toward Melody. “Well, if you want the dirt, let me know. I have loads of stories.”
“No, forget him, if you want stories, I’m your guy,” Sam argued.
Bucky just cleared his throat and looked at both men with his eyebrows raised.
Steve held up his hands. “Hey now, no one needs a source close to Captain Rogers' claim by line. Dial it back.”
“Mmm… We’ll see,” Tony said and poured an almost ink-black cocktail into a martini glass. He grabbed a cocktail pick and speared two blackberries and a raspberry onto it in sequence and dropped it into the glass before sliding it over to Natasha.
“So what can I make you ladies?” Tony asked.
“What was that one?” Melody asked, gesturing to Natasha’s drink.
“It’s something I made up. I call it the Black Widow Martini. Mostly vodka with a little Chambord and Blue Curaçao,” Tony explained.
“That sounds good,” Melody said. “I’ll have that.”
“And you?” Tony asked Bobbi as he began to mix the new drink.
“Me?” Bobbi said, her eyes locked onto Natasha as Natasha took a sip of her drink. “I’d like a red Russian.”
Natasha stifled her laughter. “Well, aren't I popular tonight?”
“Like you don’t know,” the woman next to her teased.
The drink Tony made was a little sweet, a little tart, and very, very strong. Melody wasn’t sure if it would be better to nurse it and keep her wits about her, or to drink it quickly to let down her barriers.
When Bobbi had hers, Sam put his hand on her back. “How about a game of pool? We can get our asses handed to us by Clint.”
“Yeah, that’s a great idea,” Bobbi said, giving Melody a very over-the-top and significant look as she let Sam and Bucky lead her away. The fact that Steve’s friends were trying to leave Melody alone with Steve was both a little exciting and a lot terrifying.
She turned to look at Steve. A pink flush had colored the back of his neck and he scratched his fingers through his hair. “I might have been talking about you a lot,” he admitted.
“Me?” she said. “Really?”
“Yes, you,” Steve chuckled. “I’ve really been enjoying the time we spend together. I know you’re just trying to put me at ease so I open up more, but I can usually tell when someone is trying to manipulate me.”
His admission made her heart flutter and her stomach flip. It was exciting and scary and amazing. The feeling was mutual, though she didn’t know what that meant right now. The ethics about dating someone she was writing an article about were hazy at best and while she didn’t think she’d get fired for it, there was the possibility it could happen. “I’m not trying to manipulate you,” she assured him. “I mean, yeah, I want you to open up for the article, but I do actually like you. And it’s not exactly a hard-hitting piece I’m doing.”
“Well, I am glad I wasn’t wrong about that at least,” Steve said.
“Unless I’m manipulating you right now?” she teased and took a sip of her drink.
He laughed. “God, don’t make me doubt myself more than I already am.” He shook his head and offered her his arm. “How about I show you around a little?”
“Sounds good,” she agreed and hooked her arm around his elbow.
He led her up the stairs to the second floor. “This room is such a strange shape because the hanger for the jets, and Tony’s Iron Legion are kept below it. As are parts of Tony’s labs. He’s staggered this space above it to give it more room but make this space more interesting than just a large mostly empty room. “If you look over this side you can see all the past iterations of his suits on display.”
Melody looked down into the space below to row after row of Iron Man armor that seemed to just go down forever. As impressive as it was, she was still distracted by Steve’s admission and whether there was something that could be done about it.
“He has a lot of suits,” she said.
“You should see his closet,” Steve replied. It made her snort and the journalist in her wanted to get to the bottom of that little statement. She looked up at him and he returned her gaze with a soft smile.
“Hey, are you okay?” Steve asked.
“It’s just that I do really like you too,” she said. “I went shopping today with my cousin to try and buy the perfect outfit because I wanted you to see me as a person you could be attracted to and not just the person asking hundreds of super personal questions.”
Steve reached out and took her hand, with a huge grin on his face. “Well you didn’t need to dress up to do that,” he said. “Though you do look stunning.”
“Thank you. We got the jumpsuit at a thrift store and spent the afternoon tailoring it in and adding the lace,” she said.
“Wow,” Steve said, clearly impressed. “That was a lot of effort.” He lifted her hand above her head, and she did a spin for him. “Are you sure tailoring isn’t your calling?”
She laughed. “It’s Bobbi more than me. She’s so tall and she has such distinctive taste that she got really good at thrifting and tailoring. But then when we moved to New York and started living paycheck to paycheck we started thrifting together and she helped me hone my skills.”
“That’s impressive. I haven’t sewn anything in a long time, but back in the day Bucky and I would at the very least patch our clothes. Sometimes we’d make things from scratch. We had so little money when we lived together I slept on the floor of his bedroom,” Steve shared.
She made another mental note for her column. “I’m practically doing that now. We have a one-bedroom place. Bobbi has the bedroom and I have this little sectioned-off area in the living room.”
“Well here I was thinking that I wouldn’t meet anyone with a shared life experience,” Steve said.
“Plus an artist and a writer,” she added.
He chuckled. “Exactly. It’s like it’s meant to be.”
She sighed and shook her head, moving her hand to his chest. “I want this,” she said. “I do. But - this is my big break. I need to make sure I don’t do anything to fuck this up. And this could be a conflict of interest.” She hated herself a little for saying the words but she knew they needed to be said.
Steve frowned and bowed his head. “Right. Yeah. You’re right.”
“But,” she continued. “What if we put a pin in it until after it’s published? If you still like me after you see what I’ve written about you. We’ll go out.”
Steve smiled and nodded, squeezing her hand. “It’s a deal,” he agreed. He looked out at the party below and his stance changed. He stood straighter and with his chest out. It was like he’d decided not to dwell on it. “How about we go join our friends for pool?”
She nodded and wrapped her arm around his again. “Thanks, Steve,” she said.
He smiled at her with real affection and for a brief moment, she completely lost herself in the soft blue of his eyes. She steeled herself. Article first. Then, if he let her, she’d willingly let herself fall for Steve Rogers.

Steve woke up with pain. Shit, he thought to himself. The light in the room was blinding, not helping the headache he had at all. He blinked slowly trying to orient himself. He went to massage his head but found he couldn’t move. This is what finally brought him into full consciousness. He looked to see Nate sitting next to him, tied to the chair with his arms behind his back. He finally lifted his head and saw Alex in front of him, also tied to a chair but gagged. He could see that she had been crying. “Alex?”
“Ah, Captain Rogers, good to see you are finally awake.” A man in a crisp suit stood in front of him. “I don’t believe we have met. Christian Grey.”
Steve stared daggers at the man. “You’re the asshole that is trying to rip my family apart. Trying to take my brother’s wife. My nephew’s mother.”
“She is mine,” Christian snarled. “She was always mine.” He punched Steve in the face. Steve raised his face back up, a trickle of blood running from the corner of his lip. Alex muffled scream came from across the room. A laugh could be heard, and he looked to see another man with Zemo standing next to him.
Christian walked over to Nate. “I knew you would betray me, Nathaniel. You were always weak, especially for my girl.”
“She was never your girl.” Nate looked defiantly towards him. “You took an innocent girl and ruined her. I did everything to protect her. You just wanted to fuck her up. We had a code, ethics.”
Grey got right in his face. “Don’t act like you had to moral high ground,” he snarled. “You were right there next to us, doing my dirty work without a second thought. You lusted after Alex just like every other man. Let me rephrase, you were in love with her.”
Nate didn’t blink. “Yes, I do. I loved her so much, but she deserved more than this life. I had no problem helping her escape if it meant she was happy. I couldn’t save my soul, but I could save hers.”
Alex let the tears openly flow. She knew Nate had a crush, but she hadn’t known how deep it had gone. She looked at him with sorrow. Nate knew what she wanted to say but he simply nodded.
“That is so romantic. A declaration of love,” Grey mocked.
“Well, it’s better than what you think you are calling love.” Nate threw back. “Tell her. Tell her how you made her an orphan. How Walker ran them off that cliff. That you actually found her brother a few days after he tried to leave and tortured him when he refused to give his blessing. How he begged you to spare her life. How you slit his throat and watched him bled out on the same floor you made her bedroom in.”
Alex’s eyes widen at Nate’s words. She started to scream through the gag and buck in the chair. Her mind on Simon. She had assumed he was alive but underground. Underground was right but he hadn’t been alive in years.
Christian roared at Nate. “You think giving her these truths would make it better? I should kill you first, so she knows she is powerless to stop this. Walker.” Christian turned to face Alex as Walker went up to Nate and punched him in the gut, the force tipping the chair over and sending Nate onto his back. Walker picked him back up and swung at his face, his nose now bleeding but unconscious.
Alex continued to scream until Grey went and ripped the gag from her mouth. “You’re a monster! You killed my family!”
“I only did what I had to do to keep you, Alexandra. I wanted you from the moment I saw you.” He saw the confusion in her eyes. “You don’t remember? You wandered into a game one night, looking so innocent and beautiful. I knew I had to have you. But Simon refused. So, I eliminated the obstacles.” He laughed with such malice that it made Alex flinch. “You were so easy to mold into what I needed. Now, it’s time for some negotiations.”
Outside, the police were slowly surrounding the home and garage. Infrared camera detected no one in the house but they still send a team in to make sure. James and Tony were waiting at the command center with the local police captain Thor Odinson. “The house is clear, but it looks like someone was injured. They found blood in one of the bedrooms.”
“Alex,” James whispered and closed his eyes. He snapped them open. “Have you found Captain Rogers?”
“No, but we still have the garage that is a ways back.” Thor looked at his colleagues. “I would ask but I already know you won’t stay put.”
“Sorry, but my entire family is in this.” James pulled on his vest.
Tony moved to stop him. “Bucky, are you sure you can handle this?”
“I need to bring them back to Drew. He can’t lose them.” He checked the clip on his gun. “I’m taking Grey dead or alive.”
“What negotiations?” Alex kept breathing deep, trying to level her head. But all she saw were thoughts of her parents, her brother, ripped away from her.
“I have some paperwork that needs to be signed.” Grey smirked. “Formalities, really.”
“Formalities? For what?”
“For you to be completely mine. We have things that need to be resolved.”
Alex lifted her chin. “I won’t sign anything for you, you fucking prick.”
Christian didn’t say a word as stepped towards her. About six inches away, he leaned to her face. “Watch. Your. Mouth.” And without another warning he slapped her, her face rearing as it moved from the force. A cry left her mouth as the pain radiated.
“Don’t touch her!” Steve yelled, trying to move the restraints. He felt one of the ropes slip but didn’t let on as he slowly freed one of his hands.
“I won’t touch her again Captain. Not until we finished at least, and I claim my prize.” He whipped back to Alex. “These papers.” He threw them on the table next to her and turned her in her chair. “You will sign them. Otherwise,” he grasped her chin to have her face the men tied up, “I will make you watch as we began to play with them. Walker, as you know, loves to have fun with new friends.”
Alex’s eyes glanced at Walker, an evil smile gracing his face as he played with a knife from his belt, twirling, glinting with menace. “What are they?” she whispered.
“Marriage dissolution papers. I want you to be mine and first I need to end your joke of a marriage to that cop.”
Steve pleads with her. “Don’t sign them, Alex. Its ok. Everything is going to be ok.”
Alex could barely see him through the tears building up in her eyes. “I have too Stevie. I need to save you.”
“No, you don’t Ale. You were the one we needed to save. Everything will be ok. Please don’t sign them.”
The SWAT team approached the garage silently, James and Tony among them. They all positioned themselves near the windows and doors. James glanced in to see the three people tied up, Alex’s face red but could see someone with their head down and Steve with what looked like a hand free but playing it off. “We have three hostages in there, one who looks unconscious,” he whispered. They could now hear the conversation going on.
“This is all so sweet,” he heard Grey say, but now is not the time. A gun cocked back, ready to fire. “Now, Alexandra. What have you decided?”
He could hear Alex sobbing quietly. “What happens if he doesn’t sign? You need two signatures.”
“To save your life, I’m pretty sure I can get your officer to sign them. He gets everything after all. Your business, your money. Everything but your son. I’ll raise him after this. Bring him up to be a good soldier and eventual heir. You will still be his mother, but you will be my queen.”
Alex face was one of horror, matching the one she could see on Steve’s and unknowingly James’s as well. “You can’t have him,” she whispered.
“Oh, I will pet. And we will have others. Our own little family.” Christian laughed, echoing in the garage.
Steve saw out of the corner of his eye that Nate was waking up. Nate looked around and saw Steve waving his loose hand at him. He gestures to charge, and Nate understood. He waited until Walker turned his back on the men. Steve loosened his other hand holding the rope, so no noise was made. He glanced around for a weapon and saw James in the window. James winked and Steve understood. They were no longer alone.
He saw the men waiting for Alex to make her decision. He subtly glanced at Nate and nodded once.
James got ready after explaining what he saw. He made it to the main door. And took a breath. Please God, make sure they are ok. He closed his eyes and opened them with focus. The SWAT team took position in front, their tactical gear making the practical choice for all. Odinson counted down in his ear piece. “Breach in three, two, one… “
“Let’s have it, Alex. I want an answer. NOW!”
Alex pulled in a breath as she could see that Steve was free and motioning Nate, looked in her direction. But not at her. And it hit her. He was here. James was here. “Fine, I’ll sign. But I need my hands. I want to read it. To understand what you are taking away from me.”
Grey smirked. “Sure.” He let go of the tie on her wrist and she flexed. She picked up the papers and started to read them, her eyes moving but actually observing the scene. Walker and Zemo had their backs to Steve and Nate, a huge mistake on their part. Grey had his body turned as well.
Steve saw that he had Alex’s attention. He held up a hand counting down. Closing his fist, he quietly went up to Walker, Nate up to Zemo and charged. Steve put Walker in a choke hold while Nate charged into Zemo’s stomach, dropping both. Grey turned to the commotion and then back as the door burst open.
“Police!”
Grey didn’t hesitate, firing at the officers as he ducked behind the desk. Alex pushed herself back out of the way, but Grey grabbed her. Walker loosened Steve’s hold, turned and pointed his gun at Steve, but a SWAT officer took him out before he had a chance.
Nate was loose from the chair and began to wail on Zemo. Zemo pushed him off, but Steve got there with Walker’s gun. “Move and you die, “ cocking the gun back.
As the police moved in, Grey took hold of Alex and used her as a shield, his gun at her head, arm around her neck. James ran in and stopped. “Ah, Sargent Barnes. Nice of you to join us.”
“Stop!” James put his hand up to stop the other officers. Steve looked up and his face fell. Nate’s face twisted in anger at the scene. “Ok, just let her go.”
“Let her go? No, I don’t think I will.”
“Jamie!” Alex cried.
“Its ok Allie. Everything is going to be ok, doll.” James took in her disheveled state. “Are you hurt?”
She shook her head slightly. “No.”
“Ok enough chatter. You are going to talk to these nice officers and let us walk away. I’m going to put her in the car with me and we are going to drive far away. I won’t hurt her, and you get to live.”
“That’s not going to happen.” James kept his gun trained on him but had no clean shot.
A movement in his peripherals caused Grey to shift. “Think about what you are going Captain. I just need to pull and the world ends,” stopping Steve in his tracks.
“Ok, let’s just remain calm,” James called out. “You have no clean exit, Grey. I don’t want to kill you, but I will if you try and take her from me again.”
“Take her? She was mine to begin with! She was always mine! And you, you just charmed her with your Brooklyn ways!” Grey screamed. “You took the only thing I have ever loved!”
“She ran from you. What does that tell you?”
“Alex just needed time.” Grey was letting his delusions out. “Didn’t you just need time pet?” He grasped her neck harder, making her cry out. “She’ll see that we are perfect together. I just need to get rid of the obstacles. I just...” his eyes moved to James. “I just need to get rid of you.” He moved his gun away from Alex and pointed it at James.
“No, please!” Alex yelled. “I’ll leave, I’ll stay with you. Please don’t hurt him.” She cried harder. “Please don’t kill him.”
“You need to stay with me Alex and the only way is if he is gone.” His attention was now on Alex, watching her beg for her husband.
“Please Christian, I’m begging you to leave him alone.”
In the chaos of her pleas, Nate moved closer to James. He knew how unstable Grey could be. He got around Steve just as Grey refocused the gun on James.
“Thanks for keeping her safe Barnes. But it’s time to go.”
Alex screamed as the gun fired at James. “Jamie!”
James fell over, the wind knocked out of him after he hit the floor. He coughed and looked up to see Alex fall to her knees leaving Grey wide open. He fired and hit Grey right in the chest, the blood splattering onto Alex as Grey fell over on top of her.
That’s when James realized a body was pinning him down.
“Nate!” Alex screamed
James realized that this was Alex’s friend who jumped in the way to save his life. He pushed him over to see blood seeping from his stomach. James immediately put pressure on the wound. “Steve! Get Alex!”
Steve pushed Grey off of Alex. Steve checked her over as she thrashed to get to James and Nate. “Stevie please, I’m fine!” She finally pulled free. “Alex, wait.”
She fell next to Nate. His eyes looked around panicking until he saw her face. “Its ok Nate, it’s going to be ok,” she whispered.
“We need EMTs in here now!” James yelled. “Come on Nate, keep your eyes open.”
“Please Nate, keep your eyes on me,” Alex pleaded. She took his hand into hers. “You have to live, ok? I need to kick your ass for being so stupid.”
Nate tried to smile, blood coming from his mouth, staining his teeth. “Love. You,” he labored to say.
“Love you too Nate but don’t do this ok. My son needs to meet you.” She watched as his eyes began to flutter. “No, no, no, Nate come on, stay with us.”
The EMTs rushed over, and James moved out of the way to let them work. He went to Alex to move her out of the way. “Come on Allie.”
“No, I can’t leave him! Nate! Nate!” she screamed as James picked her up and pulled her away. “Jamie please, he needs me.”
“I know doll, I know. I’m sorry.” He held her close as she screamed for her friend.
Nate felt cold, but when he looked into Alex’s eyes, knowing she was now safe, he felt at peace. He let his eyes close as the medics worked on him. He could rest now that she was safe.
I'm sorry... I'm so so sorry....

Brilliant Steel | Chapter 5/x: Resemblance
Explicit | 18+ only | AU - Canon Divergence | Steve Rogers x OFC, platonic Bucky & OFC
With the newfound existence of aliens and the fall of the corrupted, infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D shaking the public’s trust, Head Strategist of the AI, Steve Rogers, has his work cut out for him. And that’s good, right? He doesn’t need anything else. What happened on a magical July morning a year ago was nothing at all.
His world implodes as a wave of inexplicable, supernatural events washes over the globe. The blame is quickly pinned on former HYDRA operatives, the recently de-programmed Sergeant James Barnes among them. With no good options left, Steve and Bucky go rogue in an attempt to uncover and neutralize the threat before it swallows the world whole.
The problem: the brilliant mind that might be the key to solving all this belongs to a woman Steve once scorned, and she won’t be happy to find him standing at her doorstep.
In an effort to save the world, Steve and Bucky team up with a woman that Steve once thought would be much more than a teammate. In a universe much more vast and stranger than anyone ever thought, they’ll have to learn to rely on each other — wits and gifts and weirdness and all — to keep said world on its rails.

Gracelynn ended the call and set her phone on the desk, breathing out long and hard. Her heart was still hammering in her throat; it had shot up there as she’d seen the caller ID. For a moment, she had thought that her plans would be foiled now, when she was so close to the finish line that she could almost taste it. Luckily, it had been just Liam’s usual need to double-check and triple-check, and maybe even quadruple-check when the situation called for it. She couldn’t blame him, especially at this stage of the operation.

Northern Attitude Ch 9
“Me too.” She breathed and he looked up at her, her pulse already fluttering under his palm. She shifted above him, moving her legs to bring her hips into better alignment with his. Mac kissed him as her weight settled onto him, making him groan into her mouth, tugging on the base of her braid again. His hands were slow, making a meal out of getting her free from her cardigan and tracing the shape of her body under her shirt. She broke away from his mouth with a gasp when he tweaked her nipples, making her back arch. Logan used the opportunity to tug her shirt over her head, throwing it without looking. She looked down at his intense face, his palms cupping her breasts, her bra tugged low. His eyes were locked on her dusky pink nipples, inches from his face. She watched as his eyes fluttered closed and his mouth wrapped around one tightened bud, her palm instantly cupping the back of his head to keep him close. He groaned against her skin, the sound and vibration making her nerve endings sing. He leaned back, releasing her hard nipple with a pop and undid her bra, tugging the useless fabric from her body and throwing it in the same vague direction as the rest of her clothes. She bit her lip as his eyes stayed locked on her tits and tugged on his hair hard enough to finally break his concentration, the pale ring of blue nearly obliterated by the dilated black of his pupils.

"James, that's enough hugging. Let me go," she chuckled playfully, trying to wriggle out of his tight embrace.
"I can't leave you. I must make up for the time we spent apart," he said, and to prove his point, held her a little closer.
"All these months apart... have you been doing alright?"
He mustered a weak smile. "As okay as I could. I'm a super soldier, you don't have to worry about me."
"No, you are Sergeant Barnes—foolish, reckless and stubborn." A single tear escaped her eye, and she quickly brushed it away, resting her head against his chest.
"Oh, Grace..." Gently, he tilted her chin up, his fingers caressing her cheeks.
"Don't 'Grace me'," she muttered, her voice quivering with restrained sobs.
"Then don't cry."
"I'll do what I want."
"Anything else but crying," he said. He couldn't stand the sight of her crying. It broke his heart.
"James..." she said, a blush creeping up her neck and cheeks.
"Don't 'James me'," he teased with a soft kiss on her lips.
"You're like a never-ending headache," she muttered, lightly play-punching his chest.
"I'm sorry. A thousand times sorry."
"Sorry for what exactly? For leaving? Or for hiding the past?"
"What?"
"I remember, James. I remember it all. I know that you were the one who saved me the day my mother was killed," she said, her voice laden with raw emotion
"H... how..." he stammered, mouth agape. "When did this happen? How did you—"
"It just happened." She sighed. "Why did you hide the truth from me?"
"Because I didn't want to bring back painful memories you had chosen to forget," he explained. "The pain, the anguish... it wouldn't do you any good if you recalled them."
"Well, things have changed now... I give you my word that I'll do better from now on."
A small smile tugged at her lips. "I'll hold you to that, James. No more secrets between us."
"No more secrets."
"Thank you for saving me," she said, her fingers tracing the contours of his face tenderly. "You've always been my protector."
"No. Thank you," he said and reached to hold her hand with his good one, squeezing it tightly in assurance. "For some reason, you triggered me. You always do."
You are my world... he thoughtbut kept this thought to himself. He stayed silent for a few moments, mustering the courage to say what was troubling him lately. And she sensed his inner turmoil. She could practically hear the gears turning in his head.
"What's wrong?"
"If I ever..." His throat constricted as he tried to talk. "If I were ever to... lose control again if my mind were to be manipulated, I'm afraid of what I might become. I need you to promise me something."
"What is it?"
"If I'm brainwashed, I might need some time to return to normal. Or none at all. I might lose it, Grace." She tried to speak, but he cupped her face, determined to get his point across. "Promise me that if it ever comes to that, you won't hesitate to defend yourself. Even if it means using force against me.
Her face contorted. "James, I can't—"
"If I ever get too close, you can use any weapon against me."
"I won't need to." She inhaled a sharp breath and looked up at him. "We'll work together from now on. There's a lot to do because this time, I plan to be the one to protect you."
His eyes crinkled. "What do you mean?"
"You'll find out in a matter of seconds."
His worry only seemed to deepen. "Now you've got me even more curious."
She dismissed his obvious concern and explained, "I came here today to retrieve some of my mother's belongings. I knew I couldn't do it alone, so Tony agreed to help and keep me safe."
Not a wise move. Hydra was there. It was sheer luck that we managed to locate you," he remarked, a tense edge to his tone. "What if they had captured you? What if..." he trailed off, his unspoken fears hanging heavy in the air.
"I'd do it all over again," she replied, drawing a widened look of disbelief from him.
Nothing will ever be worth losing you, he thought, tense and sentimental.
"I understand these were your mother's belongings, but even so—"
"Not just any belongings," she said and gestured toward to suitcase. "What Tony retrieved from that building is a priceless treasure."
"The suitcase?" James asked blankly. He knew, from his days as The Winter Soldier, that Felicity Landon was a remarkable scientist, and perhaps the only person to have challenged Hydra. But he was never given any details, as usual.
"Inside the case lies the cure against Hydra's most powerful weapon." She paused and fondled his temples. "Brainwashing."
"Impossible..." His voice trailed off, a mixture of disbelief and hope warring within him.
"That's impossible..."
"Trust me. This is the real thing. My mother confided this secret to me, and only to me." She stood on her tiptoes and kissed his lips sweetly. "Let's find the others and sort things out as soon as possible. Are you ready?"
"Wait," he said, his arms coming around her, pressing her breasts to his chest.
"What— hmm..."
The rest of her words dissolved under the gentle pressure of his lips against hers. His kiss was unhurried, a testament to his patience and the depth of his emotions. Fingers brushed a tendril of her caramel hair behind her ear, the touch both comforting and electrifying. His other arm encircled her with deliberate care, the intimacy arousing a sense of security and longing.
She melted against him, her own arms finding their way around his neck, pulling him closer as the kiss intensified. A deliciously sweet moan left her when his tongue traced the seam of her mouth before delving inside. She fitted herself in the cradle of his thighs, his hard bulge swelling and enlarging.
"We—we...I...I need to behave," he rasped, even as her teeth grazed sinfully along his jawline.
"And I say... let's go to my quarters."
"If we do that, I'll lose all semblance of restraint," he protested even as desire flared in his eyes.
"Sometimes it's okay to follow your impulses," she cut him off and leaned up to meet his fiery stare. Warm brown met bright blue and she knew, she knew that there was no going back.
They trudged through the narrow aircraft corridors with Grace clinging to him, her lips tracing tender paths on his cheeks and then his mouth. Once inside her room, James locked the door and set aside the suitcase. They collapsed on the bed with him squeezing her down on the mattress. His wide shoulders formed a protective curve around her, his arms enveloping her protectively.
Grace smiled at him, perfectly content and comfortable with the silk sheets brushing against her back. She was impossibly aroused, a deep red blush coloring her neck, sweet essence leaking from her center. Their mouths melded together, tongues intertwining in a sensual dance, bodies feverish with the need to release.
"Ah... Grace... I'm... " he drew back, but she clutched his vest and pushed him back down.
"Shh... stay here, Sergeant." She took his fleshly hand and laid atop her beating heart. "I missed you. I missed having you close."
"I couldn't sleep knowing you weren't close to me," he whispered, his lips pressing a loving kiss against the spot above her heart. He had missed her scent, her softness. Only she felt so good. She was a soft place of relief and safety. Home.
With this thought, he leaned down to kiss her again, his tongue thrusting into her mouth. She provoked him and nipped at his lips, catching the flesh of his bottom lip between her teeth. He moaned and guided his fingers to remove her clothes. She did the same and tugged at his outfit until there was nothing left but a thin strip of air separating their naked bodies.
"Grace..." he rasped, their heavy breathing mingling as he devoured her lips.
"James.... mnn...need you inside me."
Her voice was barely above a whisper, and her words startled him to the core. She sent him a sultry gaze from beneath her lashes, and he immediately gripped the sheets with both hands, torn between restraint and desire. She was warm and inviting, in every way, doing nothing to help him gain his composure.
"Slow... we must—"
"We must make up for the time we missed," she countered, her hands tracing the contours of his sculpted chest and strong shoulders.
"Do you really want me to touch you?" he drawled as her lips peppered kisses across his jaw.
"I do. Don't you want this?"
"I want this with all my heart," he murmured in her ear.
"Then stop holding back."
"It's..." he sighed. "It's not that simple. It's been so long since I've done this and—"
"So what? You know I've never slept with another man—"
"Are you saying these wonderful things on purpose?"
"I'm only speaking the truth," she smiled, sending a startling jolt through his heart.
He kissed her roughly, eliciting a moan from her sweet lips. "You're seducing me, little temptress."
"Please... making love to another is simple."
"I'm far from simple. I'm a super soldier. I'm not normal. What if—"
"You won't lose control," she said and closed her hands over his cock, rubbing circles on the leaking head. "You'll never hurt me. I trust you. Completely."
He growled, her touch driving him mad with longing. "At the slightest sign of discomfort, you tell me. I will stop. Understood?"
"Hmm... I promise."
At her confession, he could no longer think. He rocked eagerly into her hand, his cock filling further. Drawing back on his haunches, he admired the splendid view. She looked so beautiful, her body porcelain soft yet flushed with marks of his kisses. Her thighs lay parted on either side of his legs, exposing pink pussy lips and glistening wetness. Her breasts swayed gently with each breath, her back arching towards him, calling him to her.
James accepted the invitation, pressing his right hand against her mound while his lips brushed hungrily over her breasts. He took each nipple between his lips and suckled gently, moaning softly at the taste of her. Her stomach somersaulted at the double sensations, shivering at the feel of his metal fingers, cold and hard as they played with the petals of her womanhood.
He wanted to kiss her. Taste her.
Moistening his lips, he trailed one fleshly finger across the seam of her pussy, then rubbed across the sensitive bud on top. Meanwhile, his mechanic hand teased her breasts with utter care, the coldness of the metal causing shivers to travel through her. He planted a sweet kiss on her folds and drove one thick finger inside her, her surprised moan causing him to stop.
"Too much?" He watched her with his face painted with worry. "I can stop if—"
"No, please don't. Keep going," she begged softly.
"Is it good?" he whispered as he slowly resumed thrusting his finger, studying her every expression closely.
"Hmmm... feels amazing."
Raising her hips up, he rested each leg over his shoulders, opening her up to him. Then he devoured her in earnest, the tip of his nose nudging her clit as his finger stretched her walls. With a desperate whine, she forked her fingers through his hair and gyrated her waist, buckling against his sinful mouth and finger.
Moist-sucking noises resounded through the room, his metal hand settled comfortingly over her stomach. She shuddered when a second digit joined in. The intrusion was strange at first, but she quickly stretched around and accepted. He was touching her so expertly, desire coursing through her.
"Oh... James... I'm—"
Her words ended abruptly, white-hot fires lighting up inside her. It was a wonderful sensation; her body was so hot and before she could stop it, it shattered into a million pieces. She cried out his name and came undone, her chest rising and falling with shuddering breaths. He swallowed her moans, giving her a taste of her sweet and spicy essence.
The head his cock fell hard and heavy over her stomach, the head leaking pre-cum in her belly bottom. She wrapped her arms around his neck, legs draping over his thighs as his swollen shaft came to rest against her folds. He teased her without penetrating, his hardness glistening with her juices. She attempted to get the head inside her, but his palms held her steady.
She shuddered. "Mnn... Please... want you."
"Trust me... I'll get there. I want you so much."
With a low growl deep within his chest, he kissed her, softly, tenderly, and at the same time, he slowly eased the tip inside, raw and pulsating, his lips never leaving hers. She moaned in his mouth at the initial breach, pleasure and pain mixing together. He pushed his hips forward, filling her up inch by inch. Molten pools of blue peered at her when he buried himself to the hilt, surrounded by her in every sense.
Her breath hitched at the incredible fullness and her hands scrambled over his biceps, clawing at him. The pain of the burn and stretch slowly faded and got replaced by liquid heat. Strangled moans followed from both of them as he drew his hips back, watching the delicate lips as they tried to suck him back in. When he noticed the streaks of blood around his shaft, he froze, his face pale.
"Please don't hate me. Please, please..." he pleaded, kissing lightly all around her face.
"James Bucky Barnes," she said, fondling his cheeks. "I could never hate you. Never."
"Should I stop? I hurt you."
"No. You are so sweet and gentle." She traced his lips with her fingers, basking in the sensation of having him so deep inside her. "I'm not hurting. I need to feel more of you. Please."
The faith he saw there convinced him and he slowly moved his hips, claiming her body. A soundtrack of pleas and wet kisses played out as their bodies collided. She squirmed and answered his thrusts, feeling every delicious ridge of him, tendrils of rapture coiling. She sensed his fleshly fingers teasing her folds, exploring the stretched area as they moved together as one. When his fingertips circled around her clit, she shifted restlessly, seeing stars at the combined ministrations.
"That's it, sweetness. You're almost there. Let go, come for me. You're so warm, so perfect and soft."
In an instant, an electric sensation coursed through her body, igniting a fierce and uncontrollable convulsion. She clamped around his cock, hard and dug her fingers into his back, exquisite ecstasy washing over her. She squeezed his throbbing cock like a vice, and he continued to push into her, hitting her sweet spot over and over again.
When the first tremors of release rippled through him, he pulled all the way out and pumped his cock in his fist, spilling himself onto her belly. Her eyes, though hazy and misty from bliss, never left him as he touched himself. He panted violently and she brought her fingers to thread through his hair and caress him lovingly.
When he came back to reality, he stood still above her, gazing at her glowing face and twinkling eyes. The fact that she had trusted him and given him her first time... he couldn't fathom how fortunate he was. Finally, some positivity and sweetness had crept into his life, proving to him that dreams did come true.
Grace committed the beauty of their union to memory, her lips stretched in a blissful smile. She moaned in contempt when he settled beside her, slipping his right hand under her head to cradle her close. She curled into him and nuzzled her nose in the crook of his neck while he placed a loving and tender kiss into the crown of her hair.
"This was dreamy," she said, fingers unconsciously tracing patterns on the smooth expanse of his chest.
James lifted her chin and met her gaze. "Are you sure I didn't hurt you?"
"Do you have to ask?" She half-laughed. "I practically melted in your arms."
"You did. You're right. I'm a fool."
"It's to be expected. You've had little practice."
"Is that irony I detect in your tone?"
"Perhaps just a touch..." she teased, tracing her fingers over his cheekbones. "I am eager to help you practice the art of lovemaking."
A mischievous spark gleamed in his eyes. "That’s… a tempting proposition."
"So... you accept?"
"Do you have to ask?" he said, kissing her sensually on the lips.

After Daniela and Peter got home from their jog, Tony informed them that Daniela was going to be doing drills with Bucky the rest of the day, so that Peter could finish his Biology paper that was due Friday, which was only a few days away.
Daniela glares over at Peter, "You told me that you already had it done. How come Stark knows differently?"
Peter bit his lip while looking between Daniela and Tony nervously, "Clearly I can't keep secrets from anyone around here."
Tony shakes his head and points behind Peter, "It doesn't matter how I found out, just go finish it, today." The emphasis on the last word scaring even Daniela.
Once Peter had scurried off down the hall out of ear shot from the pair, Daniela raises an eyebrow toward Tony, "Alright, I'll bite, what's got you all hostile?"
Tony rolls his eyes, "I'm not hostile. I just need everyone to do their jobs around here." No change in Daniela's face proved that she didn't buy his excuse, "I'm fine, babe, honest. I'm just a little grumpy today is all. No need to worry about me."
"Ya know, lying to me is pointless. I've been a spy for over 50 years." Daniela sighs and leans up against the nearest wall, studying the man in front of her. He was an absolute mess. His hair was barely combed, which was a huge red flag on it's own, his eyes were more bloodshot than normal, and every muscle in his body was tense, "I can tell you didn't sleep at all last night, you're like an open book to me, Tony. Storm keep you up too or is something else going on?"
"You know thunder doesn't bother me." He says narrowing his eyes, "I've helped you out before. I just don't sleep, period." Sighing in defeat, not having the energy for his usual sarcasm, "I've just got some other problems I'm dealing with that I don't want to burden you with. I'll be fine, don't worry yourself over little ol'me."
Daniela chuckles and pushes off the wall, "Well I think we both know that I worry about everyone in this place." She furrows her brows and looks at him softly, "I don't know what's going on, but you know better than to take it out on Peter."
Tony rubs the back of his neck and looks down the hallway where Peter had gone, "Yeah I know, I didn't do much, he'll be fine." He looks back to Daniela, "I'll make sure he's okay. Now," he puts on a fake smile and nods in the direction behind her, "you've got a not-so-patient super soldier waiting on you."
**********
“So, why am I still training with you?" Daniela asks as she stretches her arms behind her back, "I thought it was just gonna be a one day thing and I could go back to Steve."
Bucky chuckles, "I thought we had this discussion last time? Steve thinks I can help you out more." He rolls his eyes at her last sentence, "Do you miss good ol'boy that much?"
Daniela smirks at the darkness in his voice, "Why, Barnes? Jealous?"
Barnes scoffs, "Absolutely not."
In reality Bucky was jealous, not necessarily of Steve specifically, but of any guy Daniela spent time with that wasn't him. He didn't understand why he felt that way, she's allowed to spend time with whoever she wanted, which of course she did. So why did her talking about Steve bother him? Steve doesn't spend time with Daniela like he does, Bucky is the one that gets to see a side of her that no one else does. For fucks sake, she stays the night in his room wrapped up in his arms, so why the hell is he jealous of anyone?
Daniela rolls her eyes, "Whatever." Rolling her neck from side-to-side she continues, "Let's get this over with." She walks over to him and smiles, "After I kick your ass, Parker and I are going to lunch. He'll need food and a break from writing his paper."
Bucky glares at her and was about to respond when a voice behind them cut in, "A girl with a goal in mind, I love it." Both soldiers turn to the door to find Clint and Peter standing there watching them.
Daniela laughs, "You know me Barton, I like to have an end in mind.”
Bucky pinches her side, making her yelp a bit, and he winks, "So what brings you two here? I thought Parker had a paper to write?”
Clint shrugs, "I broke him out, Tony won't even know he's missing. Plus, Parker wasn't sure who would win in a fight, you or Velikov." Clint smiles and Daniela shakes her head, "I told him my money's on the girl.”
Bucky glares at the archer and crosses his arms, "She kicked my ass one time, Barton.”
"And I will never let you forget it." Clint chuckles, "Now go on, get on with it,” he waves his hands at the pair, “show the kid why Cap picked you to train him."
Daniela turns to Bucky and smiles playfully, "This should be fun.”
Her expression makes Bucky smirk in response and he takes a step back, "Yeah, for me."
**********
"I can't believe you went for my hair!”
Laughter fills the gym as Bucky runs his hand through what was left of his hair, “It'll grow back, calm down,” Daniela says in-between her laughter.
Daniela didn’t intentionally go for his hair, she was just trying to keep him away from her, she was worried what would happen if he got close to her again like last time. It wasn't her fault that his hair got in the way of her icicle blade, in her defense it was better than his actual face. He did look ridiculous though, half of his hair was cut short, while the other side was still long. She was definitely gonna pay for that, Bucky loved his long hair.
Bucky lowly growls and turns his gaze back to Daniela, "Still, this is some bullshit.”
"I dunno," Daniela tilts her head and crosses her arms, "ya might look better with short hair." She then raises her left hand and it begins to glow white, “How about I even it out? You and Steve can have matching haircuts."
"Super solider twins!" Peter says mockingly and Clint chuckles from beside him.
Bucky shakes his head, "You've had your fun," he continues as he stalks toward her, "now be serious, Velikov.”
Daniela furrows her brows as he walks closer, "I thought that's what I was doing?”
He shakes his head as they continue to circle each other, “Giving me a hair cut as a distraction doesn't count.”
"Why not?" She asks while letting her hand burn out as she returns it back to her side, "If I was in the field you would think it was brilliant. You're just mad that it was directed at you.”
He pauses for a moment and nods, "Alright touché." The pair continue to circle each other once more and he smirks at her, "Why so nervous? Scared I'll pin ya down again?”
Daniela laughs in order to hide her nerves while putting up her glowing hands, "Gotta get to me first, RoboCop."
"Challenge accepted."
**********
"Son of a bitch!”
Bucky had somehow managed to avoid Daniela's frost beams and random blades of ice and pinned her down against the mat, which he was all too proud of, "You've always been too cocky." Bucky had both of Daniela's wrists pinned next to her head while straddling her waist, "I'm beginning to think you enjoy this.”
"Hey, watch the talk," Clint snaps from the sidelines, "there's a child present.”
"I'm not a child!" Peter rolls his eyes and leans his back against the wall while crossing his arms.
Peter did appreciate Clint saying something though, he didn't like the way Bucky always flirted with Daniela. Actually, he hated it. It was just weird because some days they seemed to absolutely hate each other, but then other days Bucky would pin her on a mat in the gym and have a pick-up line ready to go. What was even more strange was that Daniela wasn't bothered by Bucky's advances, it was all very confusing to him. She couldn't possible have feelings for Bucky, could she? He was just so mean to her, all the time! Granted Peter didn't know their entire history, but from what he's seen, how could any woman want anything to do with Bucky? Peter was starting to wish Clint hadn't dragged him here, writing a paper sounded so much better than this.
Without taking her eyes from Bucky's, Daniela responds, "Noted, Barton.”
Bucky rolls his eyes and looks to Clint, "Well, you two are no fun.”
Daniela glares up at him, full of rage, "You should know this is going to end the same way as last time.”
Hearing Daniela's voice, Bucky looks back to her, and raises an eyebrow, "Clearly, you were too busy checking me out to notice I'm wearing gloves, Sergeant.”
Daniela continues glaring at him, but glances over to look at his hands, noticing the gloves that Tony had made for him when Bucky first started training her. Now, it all made sense why Tony was so enthusiastic about having Daniela train with Bucky today, she was gonna kick Tony's ass when they were done. The gloves were weird and Tony wanted to give Daniela a challenge because to quote him, “I want you to become better.” He designed them to resist her powers, how she's never been able to understand, but she was still trying to figure out a way around them, which typically didn’t end positively for her. They gave her an excruciating headache and made her hands hurt for days, which was the goal of them, to challenge her.
"Damn it!" Daniela twists her head to look at Clint, "He's cheating!"
"Technically," Clint smirks, "so are you, frostbite.”
Daniela stares daggers at the archer, "Why are you letting him use those, I thought you were on my side?!”
“Hey now, watch the temper. I'm always on your side." Clint narrows his eyes, "And we both know you can overpower him without your powers. Stop relying on them so damn much.”
"She never has before." Daniela looks back to Bucky who was just smiling sweetly at her, "Well, you haven't, doll.”
Daniela turns her rage to the solider on top of her, "You have no idea what I'm truly capable of.”
He smirks slightly while lowering his face so that he was inches from hers while tightening his grip on her wrists, "Then by all means, do show me.”
Bucky was getting on Daniela's last nerves and not in a good way. She was tired. Tired of being overpowered, tired of being the responsible one, tired of Bucky flirting with her for no reason, and more than tired of her body wanting to give in to him. Bucky's stupidly perfect smirking face was her last straw, "Parker." Peter perks up at the sound of his name and pushes off from the wall, "Toss me my knife.”
Peter's eyes widen and he looks to Clint, who only shakes his head, "Dani, no. I don't wanna have to explain to Cap that you killed his best friend.”
Daniela only glares more at Bucky above her, "It's not like he'd be shocked.”
Bucky nods and tightens his grip on Daniela's wrists as she squirms to get free, "She's got a point there, Barton.”
"Still gonna go with a no, Dani." Clint retorts.
"Alright," Daniela takes a deep breath, "plan B then."
Daniela wasn't sure if "Plan B" was even a good idea, she'd been with the team for almost 3 years now, and not many knew the full extent of her powers. Only Tony and Steve knew what she could do, she'd always been afraid to show everyone else. Daniela hid the other side of herself ever since she became an Avenger, never used it in the field or even during training. Every time people saw what she could really do, it always scared them, and she would either loose someone she loved or she had to move again. However, now seemed like a good time for show-and-tell because she wanted nothing more than to wipe that damn smirk off of Bucky’s face. Daniela quietly prays to all of the Gods that what she was about to do wouldn't scare anyone and would actually get around those damn gloves. She closes her eyes, takes a deep breath, and opens her right hand. Instantly a ray of sparks flies out from her finger tips and towards Bucky's chest causing him to fly backwards, spinning, and hitting the far gym wall.
Daniela calmly stands up and straightens out her braid, “I guess rage overpowers those gloves, good to know.”
"What the fuck!?" Clint shouts from behind the woman while Peter just stares silently, his jaw dropped in shock.
Bucky shakes his head and then stares at her as well, completely confused, “The hell? I thought you were just ice and water?”
Daniela chuckles, "I told you, Barnes," she continues as she watches him struggle to regain his composure, "you don't know what I'm truly capable of.”
Bucky finally stands up and shakes himself off, "You're just full of surprises aren't ya." He starts to circle her once more, "What else you got up your sleeve?”
Clint shakes his head, "She's like a mini Thor.”
"Okay," Daniela narrows her eyes at him while Bucky laughs, "that's insulting to Thor.”
Clint shrugs, "He'd be impressed.”
"That shit was cold as fuck too.” Bucky shivers slightly while brushing at his chest again.
"Yeah," Daniela raises an eyebrow at him, "it's called cryo-electricity, so basically, cold lightning.”
“Awesome," Peter beams from next to Clint, "any other secret talents, Sarg?”
She shrugs, "Plenty," and then turns to face Peter, "but I think it's time for lunch that way you can go back to writing your paper. Plus, I think everyone has had enough for one day."
Peter frowns, "Aw, come on! I'll get the paper done okay, I promise! This was just getting interesting!"
Bucky walks up to stand next to Daniela, "She's right kid. Plus, I know what I'm dealing with now, so next time it'll be easier for me."
Daniela scoffs and elbows his side, "Oh whatever, Barnes! You're just as done as I am today, admit it!" She faces the solider who only shrugs, "Those gloves always wear me out and you know it, my head it killing me and I know your chest hurts."
Bucky lifts up his shirt revealing his toned chest, which catches Daniela by surprise, "I mean, it's a little sore, but you didn't leave much of a mark." He looks back up at her and smiles sweetly, knowing exactly what he was doing.
Daniela takes a deep breath, "Well, I did go easy on you since it was a surprise."
"If you say so." Bucky puts his shirt down and turns toward Clint and Peter, "Regardless, Peter does need to finish his paper and lunch does sound good. You guys wanna order a pizza?" Everyone nods their heads in agreement and makes their way out of the gym. Just as they reach the door, Bucky pulls Daniela's arm back in to the gym so that they're alone, "Why didn't you tell me about the rest of your powers?"
His expression was of half hurt and half anger, which caught Daniela by surprise. Sighing, she leans against the wall, then slowly sinks to the floor, feeling vulnerable, "Because I'm a freak Bucky!" She collapses on the floor and rests her head against the wall, eyes shut, "I mean, I came here a freak and I didn't want everyone getting scared that I could make lightning come out of me! Everyone always gets freaked out by that! I wanted to fit in for once."
Bucky blinks slowly at the almost crying woman on the floor in front of him. He was shocked. Daniela never expressed her feelings like this, so it was knew for him. He appreciated that she was sharing, but also wasn't sure how to make her feeling better. He takes a deep breath and sits down next to her on the floor, bringing his knees closer to his chest, "Well that explains why you didn't tell everyone, but why didn't you tell me."
Without opening her eyes, she answers, "You know I don't like sharing, it's nothing personal." She pauses and takes a deep breath, "The only ones who know are Steve and Tony. Steve knows cause he recruited me and then I ended up telling Tony on my own, hence the fancy gloves."
Bucky sighs and reaches for her hand, intertwining their fingers, which makes Daniela open her eyes, "Alright." He frowns slightly and furrows his brows, knowing he shouldn't be hurt at the fact that she didn't confide in him, "Just so you know I don't think you're a freak and this isn't going to make me look at you any differently."
Daniela rests her head on his shoulder, "Good." She pauses, "But what about the others?"
Bucky rubs the back of her hand gently with his thumb. "Barton and Parker are completely un-phased. Parker was actually excited about the whole thing." He squeezes her hand comfortingly, which she returns, "Wanda and Natasha are gonna think that this makes you more badass than you already are." Daniela chuckles, and he smiles, "It takes a lot to throw Vision for a loop and Banner honestly has so much on his own plate, he's not gonna be too concerned about your new found power." He pauses and chuckles, "Sam will be absolutely terrified of you, which is gonna be fantastic."
Daniela chuckles softly and looks up at him, "Thank you, Barnes."

He was on a steady mission.
Rescue as many people as possible, and definitely rescue Bucky.
Two things. Two not-so-simple things.
Still, it was fine. Steve had somewhat of a game plan in his head. He ran through the HYDRA base, stealthy and quickly, taking down soldiers left to right. He freed the prisoners down in the literal dumps and cages and was on his way into the hallway when he heard two collective voices, one familiar and the other unknown. The first one was repetitive and very familiar; a monotonous recital for memory.
"Barnes, James Buchanan. Sergeant.
32557038…Barnes, James Buchanan. Sergeant."
Steve couldn't run any faster. He followed the voice of his best friend into a room and sure enough, right at the center was none other than Bucky Barnes, lying on a metal bed looking like he'd been through hell and back.
Bucky was in bad shape but not enough not to recognize his own best friend. "Steve?"
Steve was already pulling him up and off the bed. Alarms were raging around them and Steve was sure that at any moment, the whole factory would go off in some bomb if the inmates did as they were told. "I thought you were dead…" Steve said and pulled Bucky with him out the room. The latter had to lean on Steve for full support.
"I thought you were smaller…" Bucky mumbled distractedly. His nose scrunched, along with one side of his face. He couldn't set his mind clear enough just yet. Way too many things had been pumped into him just that day. But the fact that Steve had pulled him into the ruddy hallway helped clear some of Bucky's senses. It was then that he realized how now. Steve was actually helping him right now. "What happened to you?"
"I joined the Army." Any other moment, Steve would've hoped that he made a good joke, but not right now.
Right now, there were so many things happening. They were everywhere—
The second voice that Steve had heard just minutes before finding Bucky was still going strong. It was only then that Steve finally realized it was a woman screaming her head off.
There were cages everywhere and barely any light to guide them, but even then Steve was not going to give up. Leaving someone behind was never the plan and most certainly not if there was a lone woman in the facility. He had not seen a single female inmate nor soldier on his way into the place.
"Hey, Buck, do you know who's that yelling?" Steve tried his luck for any help finding the woman in the place.
Bucky shook his head languidly, feeling just a tad dizzy at the moment. "Some…girl, I — they — they used her — the experiments—"
Steve didn't understand half the things that came out of Bucky's mouth, but he still nodded in acknowledgement. It didn't take rocket science to deduce the woman was also part of the cold experiments being done in the facility.
They followed the source of the noise and it turned out there was only one cage with one remaining inmate inside, only this inmate was very different. Where all the other male inmates were kept like cattle all clumped in a cage, this woman had her entire upper body encased in a straight jacket like she belonged in a psych ward. She was relentlessly banging the straight jacket against the metal of her cage, screaming in a kind of language that Steve didn't recognize.
She saw them coming her way and immediately backtracked, retreating into the corner of the cage. She was dead silent now, watching Steve like a hawk as he pulled the cage door open with his hands.
Something was up for sure.
She instantly recognized the other man leaning against the bars of the cage. He was one of the few who managed to survive the horrid experiments. If he was free, then…
She made a run for it, or rather tried, because only three steps forward she nearly fell. Steve made to catch her but she managed to balance herself on her own, though it still proved to her that she was not strong enough to leave on her own.
Dammit. She met Steve's gaze, swallowing hard, as she waited to see what he would do.
Steve was on a clock. He could not waste a second, so he went forward. "I need to take that thing off you, alright?" He nodded at the straight jacket around her body. "I'm going to get you out of here," he promised. "But we gotta hurry."
The woman's eyes once again flickered over to Bucky. He was weak, but free. Her eyes shifted back on Steve and then, a moment later, she nodded. Steve still approached her cautiously but as soon as he was within arm's reach, he ripped the straight jacket off her and then yanked her arm with him towards the exit.
The woman was stunned with his strength and in it that he managed to bring not only her but Bucky as well like it was nothing. They were doing more or less fine until their escape way got blocked by the series of explosions that rocked the entire building. Their only escape was a lone catwalk that seemed on the verge of breaking loose as well.
It was also there that they saw — or rather Steve met — the head of HYDRA himself, Johan Schmidt. He missed the way that both Bucky and Seren seemed to cower at the sight of Schmidt.
Schmidt taunted all three of them, but no one more than Steve given that they shared similar versions of the serum. There was something his assistant was holding onto — a gray silver box — that seemed like the utmost importance with the way he gripped it to his chest. When they made their escape, the woman tried going after them, but the moment she stepped foot on the catwalk, Steve yanked her back.
She frowned at him, seemingly about to say something, when he told her absolutely not.
"They're not worth it — right now," he said quickly when her expression changed to incredulity. Of course he wanted to take them down, but the priority at the moment was to make it out alive!
"The thing's gonna go down," Bucky remarked as he eyed the catwalk. He could hear the groans and creaks from it. "Let me go first," he told Steve, eyes briefly flickering to the woman between them. "Make sure it's safe."
Steve agreed somewhat, preferring to do it himself but the idea of leaving either Bucky or the woman behind didn't sit well with him either. Neither option was ideally suitable. They had to do with what they had.
Bucky climbed on the catwalk first, taking slow steps. He was halfway when he heard a creak much too loudly for his taste. He froze for a minute, arms on either side of him, waiting until it calmed down. From the other end, Steve watched anxiously. Finally, Bucky continued and so Steve had no choice but to send the woman next.
"I'll be right behind you," he told her, meaning to help her climb on. She recoiled her arms away from him, startled. Steve wasn't surprised. Her entire appearance showed the face of someone who had been prodded way too much. With the fire's light, he saw the fresh and old cuts lining her face and arms. Not even the dirt could hide what she'd endured.
She would not trust strangers.
Steve did what he could and just motioned her to step on. She did so then, albeit slowly, and still with suspicious (green?) eyes.
She walked slightly easier than Bucky, however it was still clear that she lacked a significant amount of strength. Her legs wobbled and at some point they buckled halfway through. She was only a few feet away when the gantry started groaning again, this time harder and longer than before.
Bucky heard her soft gasp, and saw her eyes widen with fear. He was confused when she tried to jump up, rather than towards the end of the gantry, like she wanted to literally fly out of there. "Jump here!" He called to her, motioning the spot he stood in.
Her brows pinched for a slight second, and then she tried jumping up again. With one final sigh, she made a run for it and jumped towards the end of gantry. Bucky managed to grab her arms and helped her land the rest of the way. She fell on her side, breathing heavily. Her whole body hurt, leaving her steady on the ground for another moment.
Bucky had jumped to his feet the moment he heard the gantry again. It had collapsed down, disappearing into the pool of fire below, and leaving Steve stranded on the other side.
Steve was already looking for another way out, though he quickly realized there wasn't one. "Just get out!" He called to Bucky.
"No!" Bucky said incredulously. "Not without you!"
Steve looked around one more time before deciding his only way out. It was stupid, and probably wouldn't work, but at least if he tried and failed he wouldn't die without having done anything.
The woman sat upright then, both she and Bucky watching as Steve backtracked many steps. He made a run for it.
~0~
It was chaos coming out of the facility. Between bombs and bullets, there was no clear way of telling who had made it out and who hadn't. It wasn't until they all caught up in the first clearing — at a decent distance from the base — that the numbers began to make sense.
Steve had a good memory. He recalled the men he helped escape and was glad to see that they had managed to liberate even more men afterwards. They were all in dire need of medical attention, not to mention in a severe state of hunger, but they were all alive. They were just about to set out back to the camp when Steve noticed one ex-inmate was missing from the group.
"The woman — where's the woman?" He began to look around, calling out for someone to tell him where she'd gone.
"Think she wandered off…" One of the men called.
"What's her name!?"
"No one knows," Bucky said.
"How'd she even end up there in the first place?"
"No one knows," another man repeated like Bucky. "She was already there when we got there."
Steve looked to Bucky for confirmation. The latter nodded. He told Steve that the woman had been in her own solitary cage throughout their stay and was brought into experimentation very often.
Steve accepted that as a truth given the substantial cuts he'd seen on the woman earlier. He ventured to the outside of the clearing, hoping to catch her nearby. The last thing he wanted was for any surviving HYDRA agent to find her first.
Luckily, he found her sitting in front of a small lake. She was dowsing her face with water when she heard his footsteps behind her. Immediately, she looked back at him and that was the first time Steve got a real look at her.
Now that her face was free of dirt, he verified her big green eyes, plump cheeks, and pink lips. Her long golden brown hair was still knotted and dirty, something she seemed to remember as she quickly looked back at the lake and began throwing water at it. She ran her fingers through it as best as she could in the absence of a hairbrush.
Steve didn't know how to approach her, but he also knew that they couldn't risk lingering there. They had to get out of there fast. "Hey," he called, swallowing nervously, "We, uh, we really need to leave…" But the woman kept thrusting water to her hair, not sparing him a look. Steve stopped, remembering the way she had been screaming when he found her. It hadn't been in a language he recognized. "Do you speak English?" The question tumbled out of his mouth. It would make sense if she didn't. HYDRA didn't care about nationality when it came to their experiments. Any breathing creature was viable in their eyes.
"You speak in another language…" He assumed with her silence. He took a step towards her. "What is it? I…I don't know what to say—"
The woman finally looked back again, and very clearly spoke. "I speak English." Steve stayed still for a couple seconds. In those seconds, she stood up from the ground, revealing herself to be an average sized woman. "I do speak English, but you'll understand that for a very long time now I haven't been around real humans."
Steve nodded, slowly getting back from his nerves. "I'm…I'm Steve Rogers."
The woman regarded him for a moment, although that silent period gave Steve an ample sight of just how exhausted she seemed to be. He didn't miss the subtle wobble of her feet. She was weak and needed medical attention, just like the rest of the men.
"My name is Seren," she said, clearing her throat (an act that seemed to hurt her judging by the hand that flung to her throat right after). She let out a breath, fingers rubbing her neck.
"You're hurt," Steve said, "We should get you back to the camp. We can take care of you there."
Seren let out another breath, this one shaky. "I…I need a lot…" But it seemed to be getting harder for her to speak, like she was growing breathless. "Those animals…they…pulled a lot of my…"
Steve was already rushing forward when her legs buckled. "I got you! I got — Seren? Seren!" She'd fallen limp in his arms, totally out cold.
There was no question about it now, they needed to get back to camp as soon as possible.
~0~
It was quite the scene coming back to camp. Flooding it with old and newfound soldiers wasn't something anyone at the camp had expected. Their day had been designed to create letters for the dead, but now they readied to tend to their wounded.
Steve had made sure that Seren had been left in good care with the nurses, and hoped that when she woke up, she would be better. He then met Colonel Phillips to turn himself in. When that resulted in a sharp 'no', he moved onto priorities.
He had a lot of intel from the HYDRA facility, along with what Bucky had to say. There were plenty of more bases they needed to hit and now they had to figure out a way to go after HYDRA. It was then that they began to hear some commotion outside. It took them a few minutes to realize it was coming from the infirmary.
Steve hurried out of the tent and saw a couple nurses coming out of the infirmary tents, either angry or frightened.
"What is the meaning of this?" The Colonel barked at the group. Beside him, Peggy Carter was eyeing the infirmary, intently listening to the commotion. Her brows raised when she heard the only female voice she didn't recognize.
Steve had heard it as well. "It's Seren!" He rushed towards the ward, leading Phillips, Peggy and a few other soldiers in the process.
Seren was wide awake, fighting off a series of nurses and even soldiers who were recuperating and trying to hold her down. "STAY BACK!" She frantically yelled at them and pushed her way forward. She easily pushed the men away, sending them toppling over their beds. Nurses were thrown across the tent, hitting other medics and others, unfortunately, hit important medical tools.
"Seren!" Steve exclaimed and rushed forwards.
"I SAID GET AWAY!" Seren shoved Steve like he was just another soldier and then bolted from the infirmary. Phillips and Peggy quickly got out Seren's way just as she ran past them and out of the camp.
Steve was disoriented on the ground for a moment. Nobody had managed to pull him down like that, at least not since he'd taken the serum. Hearing the cries outside helped him snap out of his moment and hurry outside.
"Go after her!" Peggy ordered him as soon as he was out, although with great concern for the sight. Peeking inside the infirmary, she was startled with all the nurses and soldiers on the ground. The small woman and done all that?
Steve listened to Peggy's orders and ran after Seren. To his greater surprise, Seren made quite the run into the woods. The only reason he could catch up was because of the serum — another strange blow from Seren in general. Everything about her was strange so far.
"Seren! Seren!" He stopped in a clearing, out of breath, and looked around. "Seren—"
She had come out of nowhere and rammed him down to the ground. Steve was wide-eyed, absolutely stunned, with the woman on top of him.
Seren didn't waste another moment. "I am not going back there!" She pulled herself up, glaring daggers at Steve. "You'll have to kill me before I go back!"
"What—?" Perhaps it was the instinct in him, but the moment Steve saw Seren's legs shift he seized her right ankle and tripped her. He'd apologize later for the face-first landing. He quickly got up from the ground. "Seren—!"
Seren yelled and turned herself on her back. "I'M NOT GOING!" She balled a hand into a fist, although not a second after she did she growled at herself. Something wasn't working.
"I'm not your enemy, Seren! I'm your friend!" Steve wanted to help her up but every time he leaned down she tried kicking him.
Seren ultimately jumped to her feet and, warding Steve off with her hands in front of her, she backtracked. Steve's gaze fell on her feet and watched as they stumbled every second.
"Seren, you need medical attention—"
"I said NO!" She screamed through gritted teeth. "I am not letting any more people cut me open! I'll ki— ah!" She had backtracked into a tree.
Steve had stopped trying to reach for her when she spoke her last words. His eyebrows knitted together, mind racing as he replayed her words over and over…until he understood. "You're afraid of doctors," he realized.
Seren said nothing but her glare spoke volumes. She used a hand on the tree to support herself.
"Seren, it's okay," Steve raised his hands in front of himself. "I get that fear. You have no idea how much I get it. You don't have to be afraid here. If anything, with what you did back there, the nurses and doctors will be the ones who need attention. Please, come back to the camp with me."
"No," Seren said, hard, and seemingly backtracked around the tree to hide herself. "I'm not — no one is t-touching me again."
Steve heard the way her voice cracked and sighed. "HYDRA experimented on you, didn't they?" It was the only explanation for her exceptional strength. Seren lowered her head. Steve took it as a sign of shame. "Hey, they're the bad guys here, not you, nor anyone else they ever put their hands on. Whatever they did to you, they're gonna be sorry for it, I swear."
Seren's eyes lifted for a moment. "They didn't experiment on me."
"What do you mean?" Steve frowned. "They — that's what they did to so many people, my friend included. You remember him?"
Seren nodded. "He's the one they experimented most on. I would know, I was their source of power." Her dry smile led Steve to the conclusion he never thought about.
"Wait, you — they experimented on people using you?" Steve didn't recall Bucky mentioning that part at all. Then again, poor Bucky barely remembered what happened in the experiment rooms. "H-how — why? You're…but you've got the strength — you put me down. Nobody's been able to do that. Are you enhanced?"
Seren seemed to consider her answer and in it made Steve go through the craziest of theories. He was close to begging for the answer.
"No, I'm not enhanced…" Seren let out a shaky breath, "I'm naturally strong. It's, uh, one of my abilities."
"But you just said you're not—"
"I'm not from here."
"You're not," Steve agreed with that on the spot. "When I first saw you, you were screaming in a different language. I don't think I've ever heard it. Definitely didn't sound like anything I've learned about. Where exactly are you from?"
Seren pursed her lips and then, very slowly, she raised a finger above her head, pointing up at the sky. Steve looked at her a moment then the sky…and then her…and then the sky.
"But that's…" His mind was beginning to race again. His deep confusion caused a laugh, a laugh that he had no idea how to handle. He swallowed hard and met Seren's waiting (and patient) eyes. "You're not actually saying that you're…"
"From space? Yes, I am," Seren had spoken in a very different language, one that Steve had never heard of. And to further prove her story, she held a hand out and put all her might into conjuring something…
Steve was absolutely stunned when colorful sparks flew from Seren's fingertips. They were the smallest sparks and lasted all of two seconds, but it happened. His mouth fell open.
Seren was breathing heavier again, whether it was from nerves or her depleting health was unclear. She gripped the bark behind her to keep herself on her feet. "I had the misfortune of crashing and injuring myself right in front of a stupid HYDRA base. They captured me with no effort. That was last year."
Steve snapped out of his trance and shook his head. "Last year?" Seren nodded. "So all this time you've been a prisoner of HYDRA?"
"Prisoner, prime experiment guinea pig, take your pick. Once Schmidt figured out I wasn't human, he kicked it up a notch. Zola — his little scientist — did everything in his power to learn what I was."
"The cuts…" Steve's eyes fell over Seren's body. Her arms were exposed and so were the deep cuts and stitches.
"They're insane. They want to make alien hybrid soldiers to win your war." Seren's eyes shined with tears. "Using me for every ounce of power I have. So no, I will not go back to a camp full of more soldiers, more doctors, and more needles. I'd rather die right here."
"Well then I guess we're going to have to disagree with each other," Steve said, and did something quite strange. He lowered himself to the ground and sat down, eyes never leaving Seren.
She was frowning at him, confused with his tactic. "What the hell are you doing?"
"I'm going to sit here and wait."
"Wait for what?"
"For you to pass out. And when you do, I'm going to bring you back so you can get proper medical attention."
Seren's frown turned into a deep scowl. "I will not pass out."
"And yet, you seem like you need to sit down for a moment." Steve's gaze flickered to Seren's hand on the bark. It was shaking and little by little, her entire body came to lean against the tree.
Seren exhaled with a shaky breath. "I don't like you, Steve."
"I get that a lot," Steve said, smiling widely at her. "It stopped hurting a long time ago."
Seren seemed on the verge of breaking down. She was exhausted, her body hurt, and she just wanted to—
"Where are you from?" Steve asked all of a sudden.
"I already told you—"
"You told me you were from outer space. I'm asking where from."
Seren had slowly slid down the bark until she was sitting on the ground, clutching her stomach. She hated that it was getting harder to stay awake.
"C'mon, throw me a bone," Steve said, and laughed at her reaction.
"Why would you want me to throw you a bone?"
"It's a figure of speech. It means, give me something please. I've never met anyone from a different planet."
"And you don't seem very frightened either," Seren observed. "You're either really dumb or…just plain weird."
"I'm a little of both, actually." Steve felt a spark of pride when he saw the brief smile that marked Seren's face. When she did that, she seemed even less threatening. "C'mon, talk to me."
Seren shook her head slowly. "Celessia. That's the name of my planet. I was born there. It's…quite far from here."
"And it's just you here?"
"Mhm, I was on a mission. It hasn't gone well. My mother…she probably thinks I'm dead by now. Time runs a little different the further in space you are."
"I'm sorry, but maybe we can help you get back. The camp—"
Seren shook her head. "Once your little camp knows what I am…they're going to do to me what HYDRA did. I will not go back to that."
"We are not HYDRA," said Steve sternly. "We don't hurt the innocent, and you Seren, are another victim. We would help — I would help you. But you gotta trust me."
"These days, I can't trust anyone."
"Trust the men you were locked up with," Steve said, "My friend Bucky? You said you knew him better."
"Sort of. It's not like we chit-chatted during the experiments…"
"But you still trusted his judgement when you came with us. Have I failed you yet?"
Seren swayed her head until it made her dizzy.
"Seren, you're hurt. More than that, you need to rest."
"I can heal fast. It's just taking longer because of how long I've been locked up."
"Even then, you should still let somebody take a look at you. How about we compromise?"
"What'd you have in mind?"
"We get one nurse to look at you, outside of the infirmary ward." Steve had a feeling that even if she wasn't traumatized from HYDRA experiments, the medical world wasn't something Seren was a fan of. The heavy fear and alarm she carried every time he mentioned a nurse or a doctor was proof enough.
Seren pulled her legs close to her chest. "How do I know they won't study me like a lab rat once they figure out what I am?"
"Because I won't let them. And you can trust me, I swear it."
Seren continued to breathe hard, and soon it became like a chore rather than an instinct. The fact is she knew she couldn't remain out there on her own. HYDRA used her but they tended to patch her up every now and then to keep her alive.
"I'll have a nurse, and then another woman with you, if that makes you more comfortable." Steve was pulling himself up from the ground. "And I'll be right outside if anything happens. Sound like a deal?"
Seren watched him approach her, instinctively trying to lean further away but the tree was still right behind her. Steve stopped in front of her and held a hand out.
Almost begrudgingly, Seren accepted his hand and allowed him to pull her up. As soon as she was up on her feet, she fell forwards. Steve caught her and helped her stay standing.
"You're very weak, you need to rest," he told her, turning with her to walk. There was no way she'd let him carry her.
"They…they injected me…many times…" Seren said breathlessly.
"With what?" Steve asked her, eyeing her worriedly. He hadn't asked Bucky because he barely remembered. Seren's memory seemed intact.
"Many things," Seren replied. "Ever heard of the Tesseract?" She looked up at him and saw his blank face. "Figures."
"What is that?"
Seren sighed. "We have a lot of things to go over."
But that would be when she woke up again.
~0~
Steve and Peggy Carter stood over Seren's bed, watching the latter finally rest (even though it'd been induced). As it turned out, Seren was heavily afraid of doctors and nurses. Even with them in the tent, it was a struggle getting Seren to cooperate. Finally, her own exhaustion caught up with her and slowed her anxiety until she eventually fell asleep. It had been several hours since then and many things had begun to happen.
Before falling unconscious, Seren agreed to Steve's request to divulge her background and that was exactly what he did. Peggy couldn't believe her ears.
She stood with her hands on her hips, eyes blinking several times, gaze glued on Seren. "You mean to tell me…that woman…" She barely lifted a finger to point at Seren. "She's a…" She couldn't bring herself to say it. Instead, she looked at Steve waiting for him to take it back.
Of course, that didn't happen.
"After everything, this really shouldn't be the tip of the iceberg for you," he said.
"I think…" Peggy's voice was more than incredulous. She shook her head. "They captured an alien! HYDRA actually captured…an extraterrestrial. Do you know what this implies? HYDRA is much stronger than we previously thought."
"I agree," Steve nodded. "Which is why we should thank the heavens that Seren seems to be on our side. At the very least, she's got a grudge against HYDRA. We need her with us."
Peggy didn't seem as convinced and it showed. "Steve, I…" She shook her head. "She took down a whole ward of medics and beaten soldiers!"
"She was afraid — she is afraid of medics, Peggy. Everyone has fears, even aliens."
"If she has that kind of strength, what makes you think she won't turn on us?"
"I trust that she won't," Steve said, plain and simple, despite it leaving Peggy with a gaping mouth. "I talked to her, Peggy, and I didn't get the feeling that she would willingly harm someone. She was traumatized, just like the rest."
"Steve, you talked to her for all of 5 minutes out there. You still don't know what kind of person she is."
"You guys took the chance on me, so why can't we do the same again?"
Peggy didn't seem to like the question because she had no answer to it. She came out with something different instead, but it was technically still an answer. "How would you even explain this to the higher-ups?"
"With all due respect, I don't think it's so much as explaining as it is being logical," Steve said, and just as Peggy turned to him incredulously, he explained it in the simplest terms. "She—" he nodded over at Seren — "can take the whole camp down, no questions asked. She's been weakened by HYDRA but at her healthiest, she gives me a run for my money. Plus, she's got knowledge that we don't. We'd be idiots to let her go."
Peggy's mouth opened several times but she closed it each time, unsure what to say. Finally, with one look at Seren, then at Steve, she responded. "Well, I certainly don't like looking like an idiot." Steve started to smile. "But you," Peggy pointed at him, "are in charge of informing the rest."
Steve nodded, agreeing to the terms. Something told him that he would have the best way of explaining things to everyone else.
~0~
When Seren woke up, she was no longer surrounded by the nurses and doctors — well, technically one nurse but it had still felt like there were a dozen of them. Instead, she woke up to find Peggy Carter sitting beside her bed.
Seren vaguely remembered the woman and began to look around. The tent was empty save for them two. "Where's—?"
"Steve is with the Colonel," Peggy said like she knew exactly what was running through Seren's head. "He asked me to sit in for him but he's been here every minute, I promise."
Seren warily eyed Peggy and the latter didn't miss the way she clutched her blanket.
"It's alright," Peggy said, "You can trust me too."
Seren continued to stare at the woman nervously. Peggy knew that words would mean nothing to a woman who had been tortured, poked and prodded for over a year. Actions would speak louder.
"Our medics said that you were making a fine recovery," Peggy said, offering her brightest smile. "They were astonished with your healing rate. It's on par with Steve."
"I'm supposed to heal quicker than I am…" Seren said, clearing her throat. Hearing it, Peggy rose from her seat and walked over to a table full of different medical tools. She missed Seren stiffen behind her. "But I…I've been weakened for so long that I…" She watched as Peggy rummaged through the table for something. "I…my body needs more time to heal…" She cleared her throat again, and for a moment wondered if she was good enough to make a run for it.
Peggy then turned around with a bottle of water. Relief washed over Seren's face as the woman neared her bed again, holding out the water bottle.
"We assumed the same," Peggy said, none the wiser about Seren's entire panic. "But no worries. We're confident you'll be good as new in no time. Thirsty?"
"Um…" Seren had no choice but to nod. She took the bottle from Peggy and took a small drink (though Peggy didn't miss the subtle sniff Seren took of it before drinking). "When's Steve coming back?" Seren asked again, deciding to forego the bottle altogether.
"Soon," Peggy assured her and sat down again. "He's just talking out details with the Colonel."
"About me," Seren muttered. " I can't imagine how that conversation is going. The only reason I'm here is because Steve swore that I would be safe here."
"And you are," Peggy agreed. "No one has stepped in here since you were brought in. Steve is making sure that we're all on the same page. He thinks you can become a good ally for us."
"An ally?" Seren raised an eyebrow. "So you only want me here to fight for you."
"Is that what you think?" Peggy flashed Seren a strange smile, like she wanted to challenge the latter's presumptions. Whatever it was, it worked.
Seren shrugged meekly. "I've met a lot more terrible humans than good ones so far."
"Mm," Peggy's hum was that of consideration. She held her chin and nodded, her eyes never lifting off Seren's. "And so you think the same terrible humans are right in front of you?"
"I don't know you," Seren said, making it simple and plain. "And now after helping me heal, you're telling me you want me to fight for you."
"Not fight for us, fight with us," Peggy corrected, dropping her hands on her lap. "Our world is at war with some really terrible people. People that want to oppress us. What they did to you and all the other soldiers is what they will no doubt do to everyone else."
Seren lowered her head. Her hair fell over her shoulders and in front of her face.
Peggy stared at her for a long minute, studying every movement Seren did, no matter how small or subtle. She began to see what Steve meant. Seren didn't seem like a bad guy, not when she looked so genuinely afraid right now. She looked like someone caught in the middle of a war…just like the rest of them had.
Peggy looked around the room and then suddenly got up. When Seren heard her steps, she looked up and immediately watched what Peggy was going to do. Her heart rate went up for a couple seconds until confusion flooded her as Peggy returned with a hair brush.
"May I?" She motioned with the brush.
Seren's brows furrowed. "What? Wh-why?"
"I should think it's obvious why," Peggy came around the bed. "There aren't many women around here and after your stunt with the nurses, it might be hard finding you some proper clothes but I'm sure we can make something up for you. Sister solidarity. Ever heard of it?"
"I don't have sisters," Seren said, straightening up in bed. "I'm an only child…" She tentatively reached for the brush but Peggy went ahead and started brushing the back of her head.
"My apologies if I pull," she said, "It's a bit, uh, knotted…"
Seren scoffed. "You're being kind. HYDRA isn't known for its hair care. I look like a rat."
Peggy couldn't help the laugh that slipped from her. She quickly apologized and cleared her throat, moving on. "We're heading to the city today. You being awake makes it easier to transfer."
"The city?" Seren blinked. "I-I don't want to—"
Peggy was quick with the brush and strategically turned Seren's head away from her, forcing the woman to be still. "Steve collected some important intel on HYDRA, and with the other captured soldiers' testimonies, we're building strategy plans. You're welcomed to listen in."
"I don't know, I…I have some things to do…"
Peggy raised an eyebrow at that. "What kind of things? Steve said that you crashed here, implying you're new to the, uh, planet." It was so strange talking like that. Peggy wasn't sure if she'd get used to it.
Seren licked her lips (which were very chapped). "I…I did," she agreed. "And being imprisoned for a year sort of backtracked my plans. My mother — she must think I'm dead. I have to find a way to communicate with her."
"The SSR can do anything to help you, and we do have a man who is, quite literally, a genius," Peggy said. "We have him working on the bits of HYDRA weapons we managed to acquire."
"Weapons?" Seren's eyes widened. She flipped her head in Peggy's direction, utterly alarmed. "N-n-n-no! They can't — tell him they're going to get hurt! They don't understand what HYDRA's done! They've—"
"Carter!" Colonel Phillips himself strode into the tent. Immediately, Seren jumped off her bed and scooted back as much as she could. "We're leaving now! Prepare the extra—"
"Sir!" Peggy made a cutting motion across her neck, hoping that Phillips was smart enough to see how nervous his presence made Seren.
Phillips, however, continued to demand their preparation to leave at once. It didn't help that he had one of the doctors, and a few nurses, come into the tent.
"N-n-n-n-no!" Seren started to cry, shaking her head. "Stay away from me!"
"Seren, it's alright!" Peggy tried to calm her down but as she reached to touch Seren, the latter pushed her hands away. "Seren—!"
Seren gave a hard shove and Peggy landed against the wall. "Stay away from me! I don't want to go anywhere!"
"We'll have to sedate her," Seren heard one of the medics say and practically lost it.
"NO!" She screamed, eyes glowing dangerously orange. The sight had the medics and the Colonel backtracking. "STAY AWAY FROM ME!" She could hear Peggy calling out to her from behind.
You can't take any chances, Seren thought. You should have run the moment you woke up. Why didn't you?
Someone else ripped through the tent and shouted. "What the hell are you doing!?" It was Steve, going against Phillips. "I told you not—"
"Are you insane!?" Phillips was incredulous with the reaction. "She's—"
"I told you to let me handle it!" Steve cut him off. "You're scaring her!"
"We're scaring her? She's scaring the living daylights out of everyone else! She's a walking hazard!" The doctor behind Phillips argued.
"Get out!" Steve yelled and made the gesture towards the entrance. He didn't wait to see if they would leave — he was positive that they would given how scared they allegedly were — and turned towards Seren. He'd heard and recognized her voice right away but he didn't expect to see the energy she used with her hands now shining in her eyes. He could see where the others would be frightened but he knew the truth behind those powerful eyes.
"Seren, it's okay," he called to her in his gentlest voice. "It's — they're not going to touch you." He crossed gazes with Peggy who remained stuck on the wall for fear of pushing Seren even more. She encouraged him with a nod to keep talking. "You're perfectly healthy again. We're just…we're going to head to the city. There's more room for you there, definitely better food, I swear."
Seren had not moved from her spot but her hands were raised in a defensive stance and her eyes had yet to stop glowing. Still, Steve could see the strain creases on her forehead and near her lips.
"Seren, I told you that you could trust me. I'm not going to hurt you." Steve put his hands down on either side of him, straightening himself up. "I want to take you to the city. I know you'll be safer there."
"I don't…I've never been there…" Seren's voice shook, "Soon as I got here…"
"I know," nodded Steve. "HYDRA found you. Well, they're not doing it again. Come with me."
Seren's lips pursed, and little by little the glow in her eyes began to fade. "The medics — I don't — I don't want them to touch me again. I won't…I promise I won't hurt anyone. I'll — I'll keep my hands to myself, I swear." She sounded like a frightened kid, and resembled one too.
Steve felt the overwhelming urge to hug her and only resisted out of fear that he would make her jump. "I know that," he said instead. "I know that you're a good person and you don't hurt people."
As soon as he said that, Seren gasped and all the energy faded around her. She spun around to face Peggy, eyes wide.
"I'm — I'm sorry! I didn't — I got scared — they—"
Peggy nodded at her. "It's alright. I'm okay, see?" She stepped away from the wall and opened her arms. "Perfect, as usual." She was glad to see Seren crack half a smile. "Now then, clothes?"
Seren looked back at Steve, almost like asking if that's what she should do. He smiled at her. She then nodded at Peggy, quietly thanking her.
Peggy walked in a hurry (wanting to get things done before Seren changed her mind) and whispered a quick "I'll be back" to Steve on her way out.
"Seren?" Steve gently called who had yet to turn around. "Are you…are you okay?"
"No…"
At least she had answered right away.
"I-I'm sorry about that, I…I told them not to come in. I was going to come in and tell you what we were going to do."
Seren finally turned and met his gaze. She shook her head at him, saying it was her fault. "I just don't know what to expect anymore," she said quietly. "Your friend — she was so nice and I'm pretty sure I hurt her. Maybe the best thing for me is to just go…before I really hurt someone."
"Seren, I don't mean to scare you but if this camp alone puts you on edge, I can't imagine what the rest of the world will do to you. Let us take you to the city," Steve said. "And then we'll help you do whatever it is you need to do. Do you trust me?"
"I…I think…" Seren sighed. "I'll be honest, I don't know what I think. My head still hurts a little."
Steve chuckled. "That's fair. Bucky says the same thing. So, can we head to the city then?"
Seren nodded. "Will you stay with me?" He'd already helped her go through the medics before, she supposed she could trust that he would help her around this time as well.
"Of course," Steve assured her with a comforting smile.
A short moment later, Peggy returned with some clothes for Seren to wear. Despite actually wanting to change, Seren was still nervous to see Steve go.
"I'll be outside waiting," he promised. He exchanged glances with Peggy on his way out.
"It's alright," Peggy told Seren, holding out the clothes she'd found. "Now I don't know what kind of clothes you're used to, but this is what we tend to wear around here — er, when we're not at war, I meant."
Seren stared at the folded clothes. She was sure it was a dress. "I had a suit," she said, "But HYDRA tore it apart for experiments."
"Oh, well, if it's a new suit you're looking for, our partner — his name's Howard Stark — might be able to help you. He'll be in the city when we get there." Peggy once again made show of the clothes.
Seren took the clothes from Peggy and, with a sigh, went to get changed.

As it turned out, Seren was indeed very nervous coming into the city. She was anxious on the ride to the city, and getting off was only a matter of making it worse. There was way more action on the streets and noise to fill her ears. As soon as she stepped on the sidewalk, she was bombarded with car horns and people yelling and bells and just about everything else one would typically hear.
She covered her ears and ducked her head. Just as she was getting overwhelmed, she felt a hand on her shoulder. Flinching, she dropped her hands to her sides and looked up.
Steve was looking at her, concerned. "Are you alright?"
"Strong hearing," she explained. "Does…don't you have it?"
"I…hadn't thought about it," Steve said, making a face. He looked around, focusing on the street, but nothing out of the ordinary happened. Some things felt a little sharper but not the point of having to cover his ears.
"It's just been a while," Seren said in the end, deciding she was drawing too much attention to herself. The medic staff was definitely giving her some dirty looks. "But I wouldn't mind getting out of here…"
"Yeah, we'll—"
"Rogers!" The Colonel called and was motioning to Steve to come over.
Steve seemed at a loss between staying and following orders. Luckily, Peggy walked over and offered to stay with Seren until things got sorted. With her came Bucky who told Steve he'd been ordered to accompany him.
"Wait, are you not coming where we are?" Panic flashed across Seren's face. She then looked at Peggy before Steve could answer. "Where are we going?"
"Just…headquarters," Peggy said, taking Seren's hand. "You'll be very safe there, honest."
"It won't be long, Seren," Steve said, offering her a smile. "Just some stuff."
"But I — you won't be long?" Seren flinched as a car passed by. She knocked into Peggy and the strength of it made the latter stumble a few steps back. "Sorry!" Seren immediately apologized, not wanting to repeat her mistake from before.
"It's alright, don't worry!" Peggy chuckled and fixed herself. She glanced at Steve and Bucky, motioning them to get going. "Don't just stand there. Follow your orders. We'll be fine."
Steve's gaze lingered on Seren even while Bucky started pulling on his arm. "Won't be long, promise!" Steve said. He watched Peggy take Seren's arm and pull her in the opposite direction. Eventually, Bucky yanked him hard enough to turn him around and they could walk together.
That's when he noticed the wide smirk on Bucky's face.
"What?" Steve raised a brown at him.
"'Won't be long, I promise'," Bucky nudged Steve's side.
"Stop it," Steve rolled his eyes. It was crazy to say he missed the interaction, even if roles seemed to be reversed (for the first time in forever).
"What?" Bucky would most certainly not stop it. He looked over his shoulder, presumably after Seren and Peggy who were walking away. He bobbed his head pensively. "Sure changes with some new clothes, right?"
"Shut up," went Steve who then nudged Bucky — or rather stabbed his elbow into his side.
"I'm just saying…" Bucky's smirk was even wider than before. "Doesn't want to leave your side, right? Already seems made—"
"Be quiet now, thanks." Steve picked up his pace, leaving Bucky behind to laugh at him.

Seren may have been new to Earth but she recognized soldier attire. The SSR headquarters were filled with soldiers and, apparently, special agents. Seren didn't like a single one of them.
Peggy assured her that nobody but them knew about Seren's situation and they wouldn't until she decided otherwise. Still, Seren couldn't shake off her nerves. She had no idea what she was doing and more importantly what the hell was going on around her. Peggy tried her hardest to explain things as simple as possible to Seren. She didn't want to overwhelm Seren. They spent hours going around the headquarters so Seren would be familiar with the place, ultimately landing in a laboratory. There, she met the man that Peggy had been talking about earlier.
Howard Stark was, at first glance, an intelligent man and a bit cocky, though Seren wondered if she'd gotten the wrong impression about that last part. He was the only other person who knew about the truth about her.
"I must say, it's very fascinating!" Howard said, leading the two women down the lab. There weren't many other employees working around, giving Seren a better feeling of freedom. "I won't commend HYDRA for capturing you, of course, but they did get lucky with you, am I right?"
"Unfortunately," Seren said in a low mutter.
"Seren was telling me about a suit that HYDRA took from her," Peggy said, "And I told her that maybe you could help her build a new one."
Howard's eyes sparkled with the idea, almost making Seren laugh. It would have been the first time she laughed in a long, long time. Peggy saw it.
"I would need to get a better understanding of your abilities," Howard said as he stepped closer to Seren. "Agent Carter tells me that you specialize in, uh, star matter?" He was nothing but excited about the prospect, especially when Seren confirmed it. "Amazing!" He spun on his feet and walked a few steps away, babbling to himself about ideas.
"Is he always like that?" Seren found herself asking Peggy while they waited for Howard to remember they were still there.
"Sometimes he's slightly less annoying," Peggy said, earning a small chuckle. She did a double take at Seren, stunned.
"I like him," Seren admitted. He was about the only man she felt at ease with — well, besides Steve. "And you think he can help me make a new suit?"
"That's the hope," Peggy nodded. "He's the smartest around."
"And we're sure he's not with HYDRA?"
Peggy smiled. "We're sure."
Seren let out a breath and announced that they should get to work.

Steve truly worked his hardest to get back to the headquarters as fast as possible. He barely registered Colonel Phillips telling him about the stupid medal some people wanted to give him for saving the soldiers HYDRA kidnapped. He was worried how Seren might do on her own surrounded by SSR agents and soldiers. He knew that Peggy would be there with her but he would feel a lot better if he was there in person to verify that everything was okay.
So he was very disappointed, and perhaps disillusioned, when he and Bucky returned to the SSR headquarters only to find out from Peggy that Seren was currently working with Howard Stark in his lab. When Peggy turned away, Bucky wouldn't stop smirking at Steve.
The day went by very slowly for Steve. He had a ton of work to do that there was no way he could go find Seren and see how she was doing. It was honestly driving him crazy not knowing, something that Bucky had laughed at until Peggy scolded them both for being disruptive.
It wasn't until later in the evening that Steve had some relief. He was busy drawing out the rest of the maps he'd seen in the HYDRA facility when he heard a familiar voice. He dropped his pencil and looked at the door just as Seren walked in with Howard.
"…I'm sure we can find the right one…" Howard was saying, with Seren seeming to agree.
"Your inventory is impressive," she admitted, leading Howard to laugh.
"Well…" There was no denying the smugness on Howard's face.
Steve didn't quite like it.
"I take it everything went well?" Peggy asked the two. She sensed that Seren was a lot more cheerful than she'd been earlier in the day.
"It did," Seren was the one to answer. "Howard agreed to help me with the suit and we're going to work on a method of communication with my mother."
"There's not a challenge I won't say 'yes' to!" Howard said. "This woman is amazing! Did you know she can 2 fly!?"
Seren's cheeks became a bright pink. She laughed nervously. "I didn't properly fly. My energy's not completely back yet."
"It was amazing!" Howard insisted, still over the moon. Seren watched him explain all that she'd done to show her abilities. Her smile grew wider and wider, unsure what to do with all the compliments thrown her way.
Steve frowned and turned back to his drawings. He picked up his pencil and continued the sketch.
Peggy calmed Howard's excitement with the cartridges that they managed to retrieve from HYDRA. Seren wandered over to Steve's table and noticed all the maps around them. Steve of course felt her presence next to him.
"You draw?" She gazed at the sketch he was currently working on.
He nodded silently. As irritated as he was, outright ignoring her just wasn't something he felt he could do.
Phillips entered the room a second later, grumbling. "Rogers, you just embarrassed a senior senator in front of a dozen reporters and ten members of Parliament!" He barked and held up the medal in question.
Seren got the feeling that it wasn't a surprise to Steve as he didn't seem shocked with the shiny medal being brandished in his face.
"You should get a medal just for that." Phillips almost smirked then. He left the medal beside Steve on the table and walked over to Peggy and Howard.
"What was the medal for?" Seren asked Steve, inching forward to catch sight of the medal on the table. It was actually quite nice.
"Nothing," Steve said quickly. He finally looked at her and realized how close she actually was to him. She looked very different from when they first met, almost like any other human girl. Her hair was sleek and wavy, her face cleaned up, and the plaid dress she wore was impractical for SSR matters but more than pretty for her.
"I like your drawings," Seren said, smiling lightly. "Do you only draw maps?"
"Uh, no, not…" Steve cleared his throat, suddenly nervous. Seren's green eyes were intense yet still innocent. He ducked his head and focused on the last bit of the map. It was urgent, after all.
Seren watched him silently. Her eyes would flicker to the medal every now and then, back and forth until it dawned on her what happened. "The humans — the ones in charge — they awarded you for saving us?"
Steve felt an incredible heat rise up his neck and to his cheeks. "Uh, well, that's — maybe—"
"And you blew them off…" Seren continued. She began to smile the more Steve stuttered as he tried to explain something he really didn't have to. It was endearing.
Steve met her eyes again, immediately regretting it again. He didn't notice before but she actually had freckles on her cheekbones.
Seren's smile just grew under his stare. "Will—"
"Have any of you figured out what this is yet?" Colonel Philips' call startled the two and made them look across the room. Philips was pointing at the cartridge in Howard's hands. "I thought leaving you all here was going to speed up the process."
Seren didn't like him very much.
"Well, if you believe Rogers, it's apparently the most powerful explosive known to man," Howard said, making a nod at Steve. "Or so I've heard."
"Well, either you're wrong or Schmidt's damn near rewritten the laws of physics," Philips said, "And I'm rather fond of the laws of physics…"
"That's not going to abide by your human laws of physics," came Seren's voice, leaving the room rather startled for a moment. She had made it very clear from the start that she was not comfortable making her presence known, much less in groups of people. But this time even Steve heard the strange certainty, and authority, in her voice.
"What do you mean?" He abandoned all thoughts of his maps and turned to her. "Do you know what those things are?"
Seren nodded firmly. "I know what they were made with."
Philips, Peggy and Howard moved towards the table and waited for Seren to continue. She'd realized how suddenly everyone's attention was on her and for some reason her gaze shifted to Steve. He encouraged her to keep going.
She took a breath in and started again. "What you're looking for is the Tesseract." It was like she had spoken in her native tongue because nobody understood what she had just said.
"The tess…what?" Howard was making a face as he tried to repeat the word.
"The Tesseract," Seren said again, for their benefit. "It's what's been infused into those cartridges," she nodded at the one Howard held. "It's not from this world."
"What exactly is it?" Peggy asked. "And how did they acquire it?"
Seren deliberated with her answer. To answer would be to give her purpose for being on Earth away.
"Well, speak already!" Philips exclaimed, startling Seren.
"Give her the moment she needs!" Steve all but snapped at the man. He then looked at Seren again, quietly telling her to take her time. "We'll wait."
Seren afforded him an appreciative smile. "Well, it's a bit complicated, and I…it sort of involves me too."
"Is the Tesseract yours?" Peggy asked.
"No," Seren said immediately, shaking her head. "But I was tasked to find it. The Tesseract is a source of power that was once owned by the Asgardians — another alien race. My planet, Celessia, we're sort of, uh, at odds with Asgard right now. But we don't want war. Our superiors, they came up with a strategy for a peace offering. My family is very high up and we were tasked to find the one object that Asgard hasn't been able to get back. The job fell upon me. I traced remnants of the Tesseract to this place, and I quickly discovered why."
"HYDRA is using the Tesseract on their weapons…" Steve realized.
"And on their human experiments," Seren nodded. "I discovered that when they used me as their trial and error. See, the Tesseract can't physically be held by human hands. It's too powerful of a source. But its powers can be extracted. If they continue to use the Tesseract, they will win your war in no time."
"Then we better come up with a way to stop them." Phillips looked directly at Howard. "See what you can do with it," he pointed at the cartridge. "Now."
Howard nodded. "Uh, Seren, wouldn't mind a little of consulting, would you? Seem to be the expert on this, after all."
Seren agreed but only after pointing out to the group what she would do at the end. "The Tesseract is coming back with me. It doesn't belong here."
"I don't know how the higher ups will take that," said Phillips.
Seren tilted her head at him. For the first time, she stood quite differently in the eyes of the group. "That wasn't a request. I'm telling you what's going to happen."
"Excuse me," Phillips blinked at her, affronted.
Seren's expression did not waver. " I know that I am way out of my comfort zone here but do not mistake me for being weak, because I assure you that I am not. I will go through whoever I have to, to get the Tesseract back. Don't forget you can't even touch it. It's mine."
There was a terse air left in the room. Seren wondered if she'd finally made herself out as the enemy. As bad of a price, she had to follow through with her orders.
Finally, it was Howard who moved things along. He asked Seren if she would still come with him back to the lab to do more research on the cartridges. She agreed, and moved to follow him. However, before she die, she touched Steve's arm. Startled, he looked down at her, not expecting her hard expression to quickly change into a much more friendly one.
"I'm sorry, but I have to" she whispered to him, sounding genuinely guilty. Unbeknownst to her, Steve understood her perfectly at that moment. Orders. She was following her own orders.
If anything, all Steve felt when she left the room was irritation and not even at her. She hadn't left the room on her own; she'd gone off with Howard.
