Canadian metal legends Anvil recently released their new studio album, ‘One And Only’. They are one of the most influential bands in the history of heavy metal. The group from Toronto, Canada, with its two masterminds, Steve ‘Lips’ Kudlow and Robb Reiner, and bassist Chris Robertson, has an impressive career including countless highlights (as well as a number of well-documented difficulties) but has also had a lasting influence on lots of internationally renowned musicians, from Metallica to Slayer and beyond.

Their 20th album is aptly entitled ‘One And Only’. This band has always been one of a kind, and continue to shape the contemporary metal scene just as impressively as they did at the beginning of their career, with their straightforward metal fuelled by cutting riffs and catchy hooks, which the musicians continue to celebrate with admirable effortlessness and great passion.

Frontman Steve 'Lips' Kudlow says, "We’re more like our old selves than we’ve been in years. We’ve dropped all our more modern aspects, particularly the 90s version of Anvil. No sexual topics and no thrash speed songs like they featured on past albums."

While Guitarist/vocalist Lips is considered to be one of the most creative and interesting storytellers of the metal genre, Chris Robertson and Robb Reiner keep the up the pace with their usual confidence, providing the perfect rhythm section for Lips. Although they have experienced the tough and frequently merciless side of the music industry on a number of occasions, Anvil have never lost their idealism, motivation and energy.

Like its four predecessors, ‘One And Only’ was produced by Martin ‘Mattes’ Pfeiffer and Jörg Uken. Lips says, "As usual, Mattes and Jörg did a great job in choosing our best playing and making sure it has top notch sound. Great guys who understand the band and know what suits us best."

Anvil est un groupe de heavy metal de Toronto, Canada, formé en 1973 par Steve 'Lips' Kudlow (chant, guitare, vibromasseur) et Robb Reiner (batterie, forge), avec depuis 2014 comme bassiste Chris Robertson. Premier missile metOl en 1981 « Hard 'N' Heavy ».

Le groupe voulait les feux de la rampe mais a connu les clignotants de la désillusion, cependant il a toujours eu la volonté tenace de satisfaire son art sidérurgiste malgré les modes passagères. Les expériences malheureuses de la vie forgent une personne, cependant elles laissent également en plaies non cicatrisées un cœur amoché. C’est aussi ce qui produit l’attachement avec Anvil, et sa musique s’illustre ainsi. Forte, puissante, acérée avec son heavy munit de riffs tranchants et de hooks accrocheurs, il est aussi fragile en réitérant cette formulation éculée depuis les années 80 à vous filer une phobie des imprimantes, et du carbone 14 pour les plus anciens. Si paradoxalement AC/DC a acquis sa notoriété par une formule éculée mais gagnante, Anvil n’a pas eu la même trajectoire. Pourtant il a traversé les époques et les vogues, sans jamais surfer vague après vague sur l’une d’entre-elle, il est resté fondateur de sa collision avec la forge, tout comme Judas Priest, Accept, Saxon… y reviendront.

Leur 20ème album studio sortira le 28 juin 2024 via AFM, « One And Only » a été produit par Martin « Mattes » Pfeiffer (U.D.O., entre autres) et Jörg Uken chez son studio Soundlodge. Vous y trouverez l’aciérie speedée à la Motörhead avec le titre « Fight For Your Right », une lourdeur venimeuse venue de la fonderie de Black Sabbath des 80’s pour « Heartbroken », et toujours ce qu’Anvil sait faire, taper sur son enclume et forger l’acier d’une musique désormais ancestrale, car façonnée uniquement par des artisans depuis toujours. Alors ce sont des titres de métallurgie qui crachent des braises d’un autre-temps, pas besoin de Delorean pour y accéder, même un cœur amoché secouera sa tignasse contre son fer riffique, il y a aussi bien entendu des solos pugnaces, une rythmique toujours béton, et une sincérité rock’n’roll dont on ne peut tout simplement pas ignorer, où s’en moquer (en tous cas pour ma part), surtout dans une époque virtuellement sociale à la cool cynique et désinvolte. Pour certains il y a un capital sympathie et une musique limitée et sympathoche qu’un large public préfère ignorer, pour d’autres dont je fais partie, Anvil a toujours à cœur de filer le mojo d’un maréchal-ferrant, de bazarder le suc de sa grêle sonique en avançant d’un pas de vieil ours malicieux. Les styles speed et thrash proviennent des racines des groupes (en autres) de Venom, Exciter, Accept, Judas Priest…et d’Anvil.

En 2010 Anvil était au Hellfest vers 15h00, j’étais là quand Lips a déclaré « Il aura fallu attendre 30 ans pour qu'Anvil vienne jouer en France !». Programmé le 04 novembre 2022 à Toulouse le concert avait été annulé, sheu!

Anvil sera au Hellfest 2024 le samedi 29 juin à 13h35 et je serais encore là à me péter la nuque sur l’enclume heavy ; )

Former Anvil and Overkill Guitarist Sebastian Marino Dies at 57

Sebastian Marino, the former Anvil and Overkill guitarist who went on to found a concert-production company, has died at 57.

The cause and date of Marino’s death were not specified by his colleagues.

“Seby was a dear friend and I will miss him profoundly,” Anvil frontman Steve “Lips” Kudlow said of the guitarist who played with the band from 1989 to 1995 and appeared on Worth the Weight.

As founder of Audio Images Sound & Lighting, Inc., Marino was “without question the fifth member of Uncle Plum,” whose dedication to concert production helped fuel the band’s success in and around Rochester, N.Y., a “devastated” Mike Gladstone said.

“He was our Peter Grant (when he had to be), our Mal Evans, our Brian Epstein and the best person in the universe to be taking care of our business and technical needs,” Gladstone said. “Way more important than any of that is the cherished friend that he was. I always felt a little intimidated playing guitar in front of Seb when he was mixing. … Even as a bonafide rock star, he always complimented me on my playing and made me feel good about myself. That's the kind of person he was.”

Marino founded Audio Images in 1999 after a four-year, three-album stint with Overkill, who remembered their former guitarist as “a great friend, who remained a great friend beyond the band.

“The music world has lost one of the good ones,” Marino’s former bandmates said.

Though he was a heavy-metal man, Marino and his company were “critical” to the success of the Rochester International Jazz Festival for the past 20 years, the organizers said in a statement.

“The two words that defined his nature were ‘gentle soul,’” they said.
