Teresa James & Terry Wilson Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson

They may sing the blues but they sure make me happy. Grammy nominees Teresa James and Terry Wilson treated us to our first live mini-concert in Game Changers history. And it was spectacular! With their brand new album of reimagined Beatle songs, With a Little Help From Her Friends, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard Blues chart at the fore, the last third of the show was devoted to cuts from said album, and one of my favorites of theirs, Don’t Make A Habit of It. Joining them was longtime Rhythm Tramps guitarist Billy Watts (Eric Burdon, John Mayall), and drummer, Richard Millsap (currently touring with John Fogerty). Special thanks to Louie Kovic for making it happen. 

Celebrating Teresa’s nomination for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year, from The Blues Foundation, we talked their early years in Texas, separately and eventually together. Terry, who goes back with my beau, 50+ years, then London calling and forming Back Street Crawler with Paul Kosoff (Free) and John Bundrick (The Who), to playing with Eric Burdon, which Teresa eventually did as well. There were lots of bands, sessions, and tours for both, with parenting taking precedence for a number of years, limiting Teresa’s roading for a spell. She recorded with Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Tommy Castro, Stephen Bruton, Randy Newman, Neil Diamond, and many others and performed with Levon Helm, Lloyd Jones, Delbert McClinton, and Eric Burdon & the Animals to mention just a few, and did many before-mentioned sessions. 

A gifted and proficient songwriter, composer, producer, and bassist, Terry never stops working and creating. Numerous albums for different artists are currently in the works and another upcoming kick-ass studio album with Teresa and the Rhythm Tramps will drop in September.

McLemore Avenue's brilliant musicians appeared on a vast variety of records. Then again, they had a reputation as the incredible session players at Stax, but they didn't stop after the demise of that label, they carried on with their work. That's why, for instance, we can find Booker T. Jones on many discs by Rita Coolidge who remains one of more underappreciated pop singers of the 70's period. I mean, listen to what she does to the cover of the Chiffons' classic. Sure, she does the usual type of sonic upgrades of the 60's for the 70's, yet her voice brings another dimension. Whereas the original seem to be cheerful, Mrs. Coolidge feels jubilant, though you can tell she has a certain weariness around here. While she wants to be happy, her previous experiences make her cautious.

Today Live! They may sing the blues but they sure make me happy. Teresa James and Terry Wilson were 2019 Grammy nominees with a just dropped new album of reimagined Beatle songs, which debuted at #9 on the Billboard Blues chart, and are currently celebrating Teresa’s nomination by the Blues Foundation for Contemporary Female Blues Artist of the Year. 

From Houston Texas, Teresa and Terry are in perfect harmony on and off the charts. With the voice of a knowing angel, aided by brilliant songs and instrumentation, these two deserve every award and accolade. Great to sit down and listen to, and even more fun to witness live, with their band, Teresa James and the Rhythm Tramps, they’re always kick-ass on fire. 

Teresa’s recorded with Eric Burdon, Spencer Davis, Tommy Castro, Stephen Bruton, Randy Newman, Neil Diamond, and many others. She’s performed live with lots of other artists, including Marcia Ball, Levon Helm, Lloyd Jones, Delbert McClinton, and Eric Burdon & the Animals to mention just a few.

The Rhythm Tramps is made up of world-class players that have toured or recorded with Eric Burdon & the Animals, Bonnie Raitt, Delbert McClinton, Jimmy Reed, Lightin’ Hopkins, Jimmy Vaughan, Johnny Nash, Smokey Robinson, Tom Jones, Tower Of Power, just to name a few, and their songs have been recorded by many other artists.

Thrilled to sit down again with these two, it’s like going home. They go back decades with my beau, have all performed together in my living room and I’ve seen them live innumerable times. A special treat this day, they’re gonna play us some cuts from, With a Little Help from Her Friends. Having listened and sung along (badly), I’m so excited to share them and this FAB new music with you.

"Two months ago, if you were to ask me if I was going to walk across the graduation stage, my answer would've been 'I don’t know.' At the time, I honestly had no idea what the outcome of my situation would be. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Towards the end of January I began to notice myself having problems walking and keeping my balance. After countless doctor visits and having some images taken, I was informed that I had a fatty tumor (non-cancerous) on my spine going from my C7 vertebrae to my T7 vertebrae. I was out of state completing an internship for school when I was finding all of this out. Being out of your home state trying to deal with something of this magnitude can be pretty daunting. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ I came back to my home state of Texas from Maine and was admitted to the hospital April 2,2018 to have surgery on April 3, 2018. After the surgery, there were times when I would question if I would be strong enough to walk; especially at my impending graduation in one month. After starting therapy and getting back into the hang of things, I stopped questioning and starting telling myself you can and you will walk across that stage. That was a huge motivator for me. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Come the day of graduation, on May 12, 2018, I was determined to get across the stage! Not only did I get across, I WALKED across with my therapist to receive my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Theatre Design and Technology. Crazy Heart (2009)

The novel on which the film was based was inspired by country singer Hank Thompson. Filming took place during 2008 in New Mexico, in Houston, Texas, and in Los Angeles, California. Original music for the film was composed by T Bone Burnett, Stephen Bruton, Ryan Bingham and others.

Otis “Bad” Blake is a 57-year-old alcoholic singer-songwriter who was once a country music star. He now earns a modest living by singing and playing his guitar in small-town bars across the southwestern United States. Having a history of failed marriages (four that he admits to, although a reference is made to a fifth he does not discuss), Blake is without a family. He has a son, aged 28, with whom he has not had contact in 24 years. He is mostly on the road performing, staying in cheap motels and travelling alone in his 1977 Chevrolet Suburban. The film opens with his arrival at a bowling alley for a show.

In Santa Fe, he meets Jean Craddock, a young journalist after a story, divorced and with a four-year-old son, Buddy. She interviews Blake one evening after his gig, and then as they become close, Jean visits again ostensibly to gather more material, and the two enter into a relationship. Jean and her son become a catalyst for Blake beginning to get his life back on track. In doing so, he lets himself be pushed into renewing a professional relationship with Tommy Sweet, a popular and successful country music star he once mentored, and plays as the opening act at one of Tommy’s concerts, despite his initial balking and wounded pride at being the opening act to his former student.
