Music History Today: December 19, 2022
December 19, 1970: Stephen Stills made a big move into the top 40 section of Billboard's singles chart with "Love the One You're With." According to Stills, he got the title from Billy Preston, who said it at a party. Stills got a lot of help from his famous friends on "Love The One You're With." His CSN&Y bandmates David Crosby and Graham Nash sang background, as did John Sebastian, Rita Coolidge and Priscilla Jones.

McLemore Avenue's brilliant musicians appeared on a vast variety of records. Then again, they had a reputation as the incredible session players at Stax, but they didn't stop after the demise of that label, they carried on with their work. That's why, for instance, we can find Booker T. Jones on many discs by Rita Coolidge who remains one of more underappreciated pop singers of the 70's period. I mean, listen to what she does to the cover of the Chiffons' classic. Sure, she does the usual type of sonic upgrades of the 60's for the 70's, yet her voice brings another dimension. Whereas the original seem to be cheerful, Mrs. Coolidge feels jubilant, though you can tell she has a certain weariness around here. While she wants to be happy, her previous experiences make her cautious.

Today we also celebrate the birthday of one of those greats, that seem to have with us forever, and that is Booker T Jones. Named after his father he grew up a lower middle class family in Memphis. From quite early on he was noted for his prodigious musical ability. He plays many instruments but is mainly known for his work on playing the organ. He gathered other talented musicians around him including Steve Cropper and Donald ‘Duck’ Dunn, who were both part of the Booker T and the MGs. The reason he is important is that he along with other surviving members of the band firstly provided the backing for the greats of Stax and Volt. They also played when these greats toured, but

They also provide the link between these greats of soul and todays youth. He like the other members of the band left Stax and went there own way. Booker T was married to Priscilla Coolidge sister of Rita. During the 1970,s Booker T produced played and wrote a number of albums for his wife. They finally divorced in 1979. Booker T has carried on playing and touring. We hear him more often than people think he composed and recorded the music that is used for Test Match Special a piece called Soul Limbo. From an album of the same name.

For those who don’t know, Priscilla was also known as Priscilla Jones or, perhaps further recognizable, Priscilla Coolidge - the sister of Rita Coolidge.
Here’s some good ol’ down and dirty rock and roll - for the morning or other times of the day, depends on your preference. ;)

Jim Gordon part 2 In later years, Whitlock claimed that the Layla coda was not written by Gordon: "Jim took that piano melody from his ex-girlfriend Rita Coolidge. I know because in the D&B days I lived in John Garfield's old house in the Hollywood Hills and there was a guest house with an upright piano in it. Rita and Jim were up there in the guest house and invited me to join in on writing this song with them called 'Time.'... Her sister Priscilla wound up recording it with Booker T. Jones.... Jim took the melody from Rita's song and didn't give her credit for writing it. Her boyfriend ripped her off." Graham Nash (who also dated Coolidge) substantiated Whitlock's claim in his memoir. "Time" was not released by Priscilla Coolidge and Booker T. until 1973, on their album Chronicles. He also played with the band on subsequent U.S. and UK tours. The group split in spring 1971 before they finished recording their second album. In 1970 Gordon was part of Joe Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour and played on Dave Mason's album Alone Together. In 1971, he toured with Traffic and appeared on two of their albums, including The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys. That same year he played on Harry Nilsson's album Nilsson Schmilsson, contributing the drum solo to the track "Jump into the Fire." Gordon was the drummer on the Incredible Bongo Band's album Bongo Rock, released in 1972, and his drum break on the LP's version of "Apache" has been frequently sampled by rap music artists. In 1972, Gordon was also part of Frank Zappa's 20-piece 'Grand Wazoo' big band and the subsequent 10-piece 'Petit Wazoo' band. Perhaps his best-known recording with Zappa is the title track of the 1974 album Apostrophe ('), a jam with Zappa and Tony Duran on guitar and Jack Bruce on bass guitar, for which both Bruce and Gordon received a writing credit (Zappa, when introducing Gordon onstage, frequently referred to him as "Skippy," because of his youthful appearance). In 1973 Gordon played on Johnny Rivers' Blue Suede Shoes album, and toured with Rivers through 1974 appearing on the Last Boogie in Paris live album. #destroytheday

Booker T. Jones exited Stax Records before it came to a complete crash and married singer Priscilla Coolidge, Rita's sister, and the two hooked-up musically as well. Great things were expected from this project. Jones led his namesake, Booker T. & the MG's, to some success at Stax. The four-pieces also served as the label's most prominent house band, and, in addition, Jones shared co-writer credit on some great songs. Coolidge, like her sister, sang with an abundance of soul. Rita recorded for A&M, and the label had issued a solo album on Priscilla, which originally came out on Sussex Records. Few people will tell you this is a bad album, cause it's not, it's just not what was expected. The lovebirds are all over the place theme-wise -- love, social problems, ethnic issues, and other twists and spins on a multitude of subjects. This is a long, two-disc album: 19 tracks, 83 minutes of music.

Music History Today: November 16, 2021
November 16, 1970: Stephen Stills released his self-titled album in the US. Crosby, Stills & Nash wowed the fans at Woodstock in 1969 soon after releasing their debut album. Adding Neil Young, they released the landmark album Déjà Vu in March 1970, then put the band aside to work on solo albums.
Neil Young issued After The Gold Rush in September 1970, and Stills followed with his self-titled debut in November. "Love The One You're With" went to #14 in the US in January 1971. Stills got a lot of help from his famous friends on "Love The One You're With." His CSN&Y bandmates David Crosby and Graham Nash sang background, as did John Sebastian, Rita Coolidge and Priscilla Jones.

Booker T Jones married Priscilla Coolidge in the 70s they formed a duo in which three albums are made. This is the second one released in 1972.
The sound, that they made at home, is a departure of the Booker T’s sound and yet a very pleasant one. I enjoyed the soundscape and and also Priscilla’s vocal performance
