PLOT DROP 004 - THE VALENTINE’S BANQUET
eagerly the town filtered into the banquet hall, surprisingly cleaned of all threat of cobwebs, with the promise of dinner and the lingering curiosity spurring them on. it was decorated beautifully, with glimmering hearts hanging from the ceiling and trays of sweet treats in the corner of the room. victoria wolfgang had clearly worked hard on the event; and she was present from the beginning, behaving oddly social, and making a point of greeting each guest... personally. in secret, the city council president had been making a list of those she had her suspicions on - victoria believed mermaids were real, and in port vale. but she had to be sure, and she needed proof...
before the dinner officially started, while the locals were chatting and filling up on bonbons before the call to begin the meal (and hopefully for victoria to reveal her intentions), she gathered a small group in a corner of the room. some were people she knew well, and others were near strangers; not total, because victoria made it a point to know of everyone. mike thompson, walter perez-moralez, lena derya, theo seong, and karina hutchensen were the little rag-tag group that she’d assembled, and for them, she had a secret; an inside scoop. victoria wolfgang requested for each of them to help her, and more would be explained at dinner, but she had her eyes on specific people in town who she suspected were involved in shady dealing in town. in whispers, she asked them to keep their eyes and ears out, and let her know if anything does seem amiss. the people who have sparked concern under victoria’s radar? ronan delgado, stella sarasvati, amara marino, and nereida malik, and silas waters. especially silas waters.
FINALLY... It Was Time For Dinner To Be Served
across four long, wide tables, the locals took their seats, still whispering and carrying on conversation from before victoria’s interruption. she was stood at the front of the room, arms crossed, and waiting for the attention to be directed her way. “thank you, everyone, for coming tonight. i thought this would be a good time to remember how close we all are, as a town, and how for many of us... this has been our home from the beginning of our lives. port vale is haven, not to mermaids, but to all of us-” her smile was cool, and icy, as she looked out across the town of faces she’d seen everyday... and then, all the rest of the new faces. “and to also ensure that you heard it from me first. the case of our former mayor, samuel blackmore’s, death has been reopened and investigation has resumed. unfortunately i have no other information except that, so please, enjoy your dinner, and make some good memories.”
and then, in typical blunt wolfgang fashion, victoria took her leave and sat down next to stephanie anand, and began to make small talk with the circle of friends seated with the librarian. she leaned in to shake someone’s hand, and as she withdrew, to whispered to steph “i hope you have information for me, soon.”
But during the dinner, another scene unfolded....
having stepped outside for some air after victoria’s sudden announcement, siobhan waters realized that she wasn’t alone. maya chan had already beaten her outside, and before siobhan could go back inside; she was spotted. the mayor’s fiancé was crying, but refused to tell maya what was wrong. “i think something bad might happen,” was all she would admit. “victoria is making a big, big mistake....” but unfortunately, before she could spill more of her thoughts, lumi north came outside and caught siobhan and maya talking. the selkie ran off, back inside to xander blackmore, before anything more could be said; and the mermaids were left alone.
inside, at the bar, ronan delgado and xander blackmore were unexpectedly talking. the mayor himself had been drinking, and in search of a friend; so he was buying drinks for the hippocampi, and rambling on as he did- without much care for what he said, or who may overhear. “everyone has secrets, you know,” xander told ronan, with a wistful sigh. “even my fiancé has her secrets. she told me her mom knew my dad... isn’t that crazy, man? and now the investigation... you know, i think i want to just get away for awhile.”
the mayor was overheard by emilia acosta, renzie anand, and gabi drake, and the topic soon changed to something lighter. it was then siobhan returned from inside, and the mayor as his future bride left the banquet to go home.
The worst was yet to come...
that night, long after the banquet ended and everyone had headed home or to after-parties; more news came. the mayor’s brother, moray blackmore, was not at home, and the lighthouse had not been lit. xander blackmore was hesitant to declare his brother, the lightkeeper, missing, and told everyone not to panic. he would be back soon, xander promised, so no official report was made, but the town took no time in spreading it through whispers.
xander blackmore is asking for volunteers to stay and help operate the north star lighthouse. if you would like to stay at the lighthouse temporarily, please contact the main.

A CLUE WAS FOUND...
It could be said that the mayor of the town relied a little too much on Stephanie Anand and her knowledge; and in the following days of the storm, this was once more proven true. He dropped off some boxes of old files; old files, aged and falling apart, some entirely ruined with water damage, and only about half of the content readable. They had been locked in the city centre for decades, and the mayor's request of Steph was to ensure nothing important was lost.
In this box contained a handwritten account of an old speech... it seemed to be over two hundred years old, though the exact date had faded too much to be certain. The speech was given by the mayor at that time, also a Blackmore, following the first major repair done to the North Star. Though much of the fancy, scrawling script had faded with age, some was still legible...
The sea has their source of life, the magic that breathes into them spirit & soul, and so do we. Our North Star; the lifeblood of...
....Vale. We are dedicated to maintaining our beacon, just as the ocean maintains...
....We draw from the North Star our might...
... But no two power sources can exist together, at once. Magic of the sea cannot exist with the magic of land, and our lighthouse...
... Our dedication is to our spirit, may she never go dark...
... mermaids.
And the rest, lost to the world.

Untitled Sneak Preview
We can’t call this a WIP Wednesday or a Sunday Six, since it’s Thursday, but here are a few paragraphs of a new work that I’m writing for @jamespotterthefirst and @starrystarrytrouble
“No, it’s fine. These things can’t be helped. I understand.” Ethan was standing with his back to the door of his office talking on his office phone.
“Harper, it’s fine. Really. I’m an adult, I can do this on my own. You have a nice evening, too. Bye.” He hung up the phone, disconnecting the call. He picked up a magazine and flung it across the room. “Fuck!”
He turned towards the door as he heard a quick intake of breath. “How long have you been there?”
Maggie shook her head. “Only a few seconds. I have the lab results back on Mrs. Blackmore. I thought you would want to see them.”
He held out his hand and she crossed the room tentatively. He looked at the file. “What’s your recommendation?”
“Antibiotics. The trick is to find the right one since she’s allergic to penicillin variants and glycopeptides.”
“Agreed.” When Maggie turned to leave Ethan stopped her. “Do you have any cases you need help with too?”
Maggie shook her head. “No, all my patients are stable and I’m not waiting on anything else. I’m about ready to leave for the evening.” She tipped her head to the side. “Why?”
“Because I have to go to a dinner with Stephanie Klein and Dan Avalon of Dressler Health. Naveen is still recovering from the flu and Harper just called into a surgery. I don’t want to go and if I have a patient emergency, I have an out.”
Should I continue this idea?

I made a youtube playlist for Patience. Some of the songs have a very different meaning because of her backstory.
See below the cut for commentary.
Broken Crown by Mumford & Sons - If I could pick one song to summarize Patience’s backstory, I’d pick this one. “Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie” is a very Patience lyric.
Accidentally in Love by Counting Crows - This describes her relationship with the fey and the Feywild
Under a Violet Moon by Blackmore’s Night - I feel like this is a very Circle of Dreams song, about a good time with a bit of enchantment
Mystery by Gary Stadler and Stephanie - I like to imagine that the beginning of this song is what Patience sounds like when casting spells in Sylvan. “Time has come to start again Washed clean by the falling rain Gold and silver starlit sea Wash your magic over me “ are about her past. There are multiple songs by this artist that remind me of Patience, like Fairy Nightsongs, and Fairy Ring (with Singh Kaur).
Harbor by Vienna Teng - What Patience wants to be for others--a safe harbour.
Wanderer’s Lullaby by Adriana Figueroa - This is either Patience singing it to one of her friends to encourage them or someone singing it to Patience, it could go either way.
Whispers in the Dark by Sklllet and Descent of the Archangel by Kamelot - These songs are about Patience’s past. The lyrics of the former especially have a different meaning to Patience,
Tempus Vernum by Enya - This song reminds me of how her past has affected her outlook. It’s pairs of opposites, ominously chanted in Latin. It reflects her sense of order, need for things to be neat and tidy.
Moonsong by Adrian von Ziegler - I’m pretty sure every Druid needs Celtic-y music, so here’s a nice relaxing track. To me it sounds like Patience keeping watch over the party as they camp for the night.

Five Inspiring Children’s Sports Books on BorrowBox
If you or your children are reluctant readers, then perhaps sports books might offer an opportunity to get back into the experience of enjoying a book, eBook or eAudiobook.
Our hobbies and interests provide the ideal starting point for those of us who may not have developed a reading routine, or who feel that reading is very much a chore.
However, if you’re sports-mad, or even just a little curious about it all, there are a whole host of great sports books available for young and old on the BorrowBox platform, which is free for all library members to access.
Like all great children’s books, these tomes will likely prove very enjoyable for older readers, too. Plus, they are a great way to learn more about Ireland’s strong sporting culture, and our heroic athletes.
These books will likely inspire future generations of sports stars. But they may well also (re-)ignite a passion for reading.
Here are five kids’ sports books, currently available on BorrowBox, which are well worth checking out.
Bernard Dunne: Champion of the World by Bernard Dunne (Ages 10+)
Tumblr media
‘‘According to the Oxford Dictionary, boxing is ‘the sport or practice of fighting with the fists, especially with padded gloves in a roped square ring.
What this doesn’t mention is the focus that boxing demands, the mental strength needed to push yourself to the limits. Being hit in the face isn’t something that you grow to enjoy, but it’s certainly something you grow to accept. It’s funny, but it’s something that I actually miss about my sport. It makes you feel alive.’’
This is the story of the Irishman who became king of the ring, and retired with a record of 28 wins from 30 professional fights. It charts his rise to the top of his profession, from his six year old novice days, to becoming world champion at the age of 29.
In Champion of the World, Dunne explains the appeal of boxing. He talks about his strong family connections to the sport and how it was almost “inevitable” that he would take to the ring. After all, he recalls how, at the age of just six, he told the great Barry McGuigan that he would one day become world champion!
Like all sporting greats, Dunne had to overcome a number of setbacks along his journey to the top. He had a cyst on his brain. He missed out on the Olympics. He got knocked out by Kiko Martinez in a bout which last less than 90 seconds.
That infamous defeat proved to be “a blessing in disguise” for Dunne, as he reveals here.
Champion of the World is one for aspiring boxers, or sports enthusiasts searching for a tale of inspiration.
Great Irish Sports Stars: Cora Staunton by Eimear Ryan  (Ages 7+)
Tumblr media
‘‘Cora looked them all in the eye. In everyone’s expression, she saw the same trust and determination. ‘Ask yourselves this, girls,’ she said. ‘In half an hour, when this is over, do ye want to be in here crying? Or do ye want to be in here with the cup?’ ‘With the cup!’ they all shouted in unison. Cora nodded, pleased. They were ready. She led them back down the tunnel.’’
Sporting the green and red of club and county, Cora Staunton became a serial winner. She is one of the most-accomplished footballers this nation has seen.
An 11-time All-Star winner, the Mayo great’s story is one that highlights the dedication needed to excel at elite-level sport. She trained seven nights a week and her hard work on the training pitch ensured that she was able to score goals with both feet, from play and from frees.
Staunton’s senior intercounty football career started at the tender age of 13. She later became a stalwart for Mayo, and reached the pinnacle of her sport, winning four All Irelands.
Now plying her trade in Sydney, with Australian Rules Football side, Great Western Giants, her story is one that will leave readers in awe. It underlines her unique skills as a footballer, but also her role in creating a strong team environment.
Kerry great, Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper (written by Donny Mahoney) also features in this series of Ireland’s best sports stars and is available on BorrowBox.
Girls Play Too: Inspiring Stories of Irish Sportswomen by Jacqui Hurley (Ages 8+)
Tumblr media
‘‘There are more opportunities for girls, there is more female sport being televised, written about and talked about than ever before, and a whole new generation of Irish girls are getting to witness new heroes being created.
I wrote this book so you can learn more about those heroes – not superheroes in capes, but ones who wear football boots, boxing gloves and mouth guards. I want you to read about fairytales that aren’t about princesses in a castle and mostly, I want you to know that some fairytales start in your back garden and end up with an Olympic or an All-Ireland medal.’’
RTE Sports Broadcaster Jacqui Hurley has produced a truly wonderful book in the shape of Girls Play Too. It is a celebration of the great Irish female athletes, who have risen to the top of their respective sports.
Among the athletes profiled are Rachel Blackmore, Ellen Keane, Derval O’Rourke, Stephanie Roche and Katie Taylor.
The book contains lots of marvellous illustrations, which complement the profile snapshot of each featured sports personality. There are also sections on rising stars and legends of sport.
This book celebrates the female athletes who have had to overcome stereotypes and barriers, along the way to establishing themselves as some of our country’s greatest sports stars.
Gordon’s Game by Gordon D’Arcy and Paul Howard (Ages 8+)
Tumblr media
‘‘It doesn’t matter how big you are.
Or how strong you are.
Or even how old you are.
Because on the field, there is a job for everyone.
That’s why I fell in love with the game – because every player has something different that he or she can contribute.’’
Former Ireland and Leinster centre, Gordon D’Arcy, and sports journalist, Paul Howard have created this fun-filled rugby series for kids. It is inspired by events from D’Arcy’s playing career, though has been somewhat rejigged and condensed into a shorter time span.
From his days playing at hooker with Wexford Wanderers, to being called up to the Ireland team while still in school, this is a story of a boy who worked hard to fulfil his dream.
Gordon’s Game is not your traditional sports autobiography. Instead, it is a tale of adventure and harsh lessons, aimed at inspiring a younger audience. Also, it is brilliantly illustrated by Alan Nolan.
Ultimate Football Heroes – Rashford, Kane, Messi Ronaldo, Dele Alli – by Matt & Tom Oldfield (7+)
Tumblr media
“From the playground, to the pitch.”
The Ultimate Football Heroes series is a biographical story of the life of a star footballer. It charts the rise of some of world football’s biggest names, from the playground to the pitch.
UFH books are made up of fun-filled, fast-paced, biographical stories of famous footballers, recounting their days playing kick-about in the playground, to creating career-defining moments as professional footballers on the pitch. The books are full of action, and they are for all the family to enjoy.
Messi, Ronaldo, Dele Ali, Kane and Rashford are among the titles currently available as both eBook and eAudiobook formats on BorrowBox.

PLOT DROP 001 - The North Star Goes Dark?
A THICK MIST HAS ROLLED INTO TOWN...
Another storm is brewing. As the Port Vale locals begin to wake up on Sunday, September 12th, exactly one week from the Starry Seas Lantern Festival, it doesn’t take long from them to realize that something unusual had occurred during the night. Moray Blackmore, the lightkeeper, had been working through the night to try and relight the North Star Lighthouse, but despite his efforts, the lighthouse remained dark.
“UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE... All Harbor Activities Have Been Suspended.”
Xander Blackmore, Port Vale’s mayor, addresses the town as concern begins to grow among the residents. There had never been a time in known Port Vale history that their precious lighthouse had remained dark for so long; and with Moray insisting that nothing seemed to be wrong with it, Xander decided to enlist the help of a fancy technician from the city. Many locals were hesitant to allow a stranger come and tinker with their precious historical relic, including the Lightkeeper himself, who took it upon himself to closely watch the technician as he made his own attempt to relight the beacon. He was joined in his babysitting by Renzie Anand, who could not in good conscious allow something so drastic to take place in his beloved town without adding his own supervision to the mix, and got away with his snooping by offering free lunch to those working on the North Star.
The storm would be hitting soon.
MEANWHILE... A Discovery Is Made
On the historical mermaid statue in front of Port’s Point City Centre, Kyree Abraham notices an interesting pendant now hanging from the bronze creature. It looked old, and intriguing, with an ancient language engraved on the back of an emerald medallion. She turns it into the City Centre, and the mayor hunts down Mellora Atoll, insisting that she display this new-found relic in the museum.
But to her horror, she recognized the pendant. Despite her extra caution to protect the gemstone which Atla, the former princess of her North Atlantic Ocean, was born from; it had ended up here... in Port Vale. Stolen? By Whom? And worse yet, now on display for the whole town to gawk at.
Stephanie Anand is asked to investigate the origins of the pendant, and it’s so... oddly familiar to her, as if she’d seen it (or something similar) drawn on an old paper somewhere in her stacks of research. She isn’t the only one with a mystery to solve; Lucia Frost notices that a few dead fish had washed up on the far side of the beach, seemingly to have been affected by a sickness she had never seen in the water before.
The Storm Is Coming.
After hours of work, the fancy city technician leaves Port Vale defeated; the lighthouse remains dark, and questions remain unanswered. All the employees who work at the dock are put on temporary leave, and the mayor puts restrictions on all boating, fishing, and swimming until the lighthouse is repaired. He promises this is temporary, and urges the town to focus on preparing for the storm... enough wrecks happen at the town’s rocky shore with the lighthouse in action.
Talk is spreading fast through the town, and already the locals are wondering if the ancient pendant that had been found had something to do with the lighthouse’s unexplainable darkness. To the mermaids, they know what that pendant is, and they want to catch the thief who snatched it from the North Atlantic. Their eyes are turned to the sirens for this crime, but the sirens feel the mermaids are the ones responsible for this. As for the humans...?
Victoria Wolfgang decides to set up a temporary task force to babysit the sea from land as night begins to fall, ready to rescue anyone who finds themselves lost in the darkness of the waves. Tension is high, windows are shuttered, and all eyes are towards the lighthouse, hoping it would magically relight and put an end to the confusion. The storm will come and it will pass, as they always do, but the hippocampi can feel something stirring in the air.
Something is coming, and this won’t be the beginning of what Port Vale will face unless questions get answers soon.
