your kind is nearly gone from the world, and you know this all too well. with origins unknown, even by you, the burden of protecting everyone weighs heavy on your heart. you feel too much, know too much, and see all. this war is something sinister, and you wonder if it’s the final blow to your species. will you be enough to save them, or will you fade from history with the rest?

THE OCEAN

Weldon remembers what life was like before Assyria. There were no kingdom’s, no laws, just freedom to roam the seas, without having to worry about the safety of his brothers. When the mermaids were first created, Weldon welcomed having another species in the fold, and figured that the Hippocampi could work with the mermaids and make sure they know how to navigate their new lands safely and efficiently. He respected Assyrian law, but his brothers always came first, even if it meant going against the will of the Princesses. 

The sirens began popping up around 250 years later, and over time, this gave Weldon an uneasy feeling. He felt something dark brewing, but he had no clue what was to come. Twenty-five years later, the swelling darkness erupted in conflict. Sirens attacked the outer edges of Assyrian kingdoms, laying waste to what remained of Assyrian culture in those areas. In the early days of the war, Weldon and his brethren stayed out of the conflict. That was until Hippocampi started disappearing. Over the years of the war, he started investigating the mysterious circumstances behind their disappearance, but turned up empty handed at every turn. This obsession for discovering the truth haunted Weldon until only 4 Hippocampi remained. He knew he had to quit worrying about why it was happening and focus on protecting his younger brothers.

ON LAND

While investigating the oceans further, he felt something worse coming. It had been over 50 years since the war had ended, and the mermaids and sirens had mostly resolved their differences, apart from personal feuds between mermaid leaders and siren captains. He remembered hearing of a small human town from his brother, Isidore. He knew he needed to go to his brother and make sure he was safe, and warn him about the evil he felt looming over the seas like a tempestuous storm. He made his way to Port Vale.

PERSONALITY

    Weldon has always been the protective older brother, especially since the Hippocampi began to disappear, leaving only 4. He sees it as his responsibility to keep tabs on the other living Hippos and make sure they’re clear of danger. He is willing to do whatever it takes to protect the ones he cares about, Hippocampus or not. Sometimes this trait gets him into trouble, or most of the time. He enjoys loud, powerful music, and unlike most of his fellow sea-folk, he loves car rides. However, like his fellow sea-folk, he struggles with human concepts, and doesn’t have a problem voicing that to the unlucky human who is around to hear it.

CONNECTIONS

BRASS: when she took charge of the caspian sea, you were there, watching. you remember it well, admiring the fierce little siren with a thirst for blood. your loyalty to the mermaids has always held strong, but you know deep down you’d come if she called and needed your help. in port vale, the lines have blurred; you want to see her succeed, and it has torn your heart in two. most of all, you’re beginning to lose hope for the future of assyria, but her resolve stays strong.

SAPPHIRE: you know both mermaid princesses sisters quite well, but there is a special companionship with this antarctic twin. with the unruly sirens of the coral sea, you have had to come to her aid more than once to settle threats and disputes, and now consider yourself almost a knight of her court, unofficially. sometimes, you wonder if the line between professional and friendly has been blurred, but you both are too scared to take that leap. port vale has, of course, changed the tide of how things should be, yet again.

COMPASS: she is familiar; you have met once before, long ago. fresh-faced and new on the sea, you remember her well, coming to dock in a far-away harbor with excitement for the world and it’s adventures it offers. now, something about her spirit seems broken, a shattered reminder of how dark and cruel the planet is. on land, you feel uncomfortable, but she is a steady reminder of a time when all was well, and nothing was about to fall to pieces.

there is no trust among the sirens, even within your own sea. as rumors and whispers swirl, fingers pointed your way, you wonder deep down if what the princesses and their court say is true. is the war on your shoulders? you have made mistakes, but nothing this dire. now, you find yourself sinking like an anchor into regret, scared and ashamed by your retreat to land. can you rule your sea from the seat of humans?

THE OCEAN

Silver was born to a small pod.  They were already struggling for survival when she came about. ��The elders that were supposed to take care of the young had died due to humans overfishing and poisoning the waters.  Despite tradition saying that she was to stay with the pod till she matured, she was cast out at a young age.  The pod just couldn’t support another mouth and their ‘birth’ had been accidental. No one had been expecting another siren. She blamed the humans for her misfortune.  The mermaids moreso with their established territory and not a care in the world.  Both of them needed to learn that sirens were not to be messed with.  Silver wandered for a while, slowly and quietly building a small army of vengeful sirens.  Those who weren’t satisfied with their life on the fringes, constantly fighting for survival.  They only returned home to claim the title of captain, taking a broken silver bracelet as her token of change.  

She is 60 when she leads an attack on the mermaids.  Their newfound pod is as brutal and vicious as the worst of sharks.  They turn the waters red with the initial win.  Silver never meant to start a war or to aid one.  She just wanted to make a stand, a point that they couldn’t be bossed around by the mermaids.  When things get bloody and difficult because her single battle didn’t win them everything promised, some of her pod leave.  When she loses other battles, others turn on her, blaming her for the deaths of their kin.   Despite the failure, her title is kept much to some sirens dismay.  They all want the same thing as her and that helps keep her on top.  All the battles she fought were ruthless and violent with few survivors if any on both sides.  Some rumors say Silver is still in the ocean hunting down mermaids.  Her reputation helps her keep her title regardless of the fact that sirens start taking their frustration out on her.

Silver flees to land, lacerated in scars.  Half of her dorsal fin is now missing and damage to her vocal cords make it hurt to talk.  She still sings to get what she wants sometimes

ON LAND

Silver misses the ocean dearly.  She hates that she’s been forced to don human legs because now there are those of both species that would wish her dead.  Her pod remains loyal to her, but she can feel that loyalty wavering.  They still sneak off to the water whenever they can.  They dislike life on land.  Silver feels weak in Port Vale though even the humans watch her warily.  She’s trying to dissuade their curiosity and suspicion as much as they can while they try to come up with a plan to fix things. 

PERSONALITY

Silver is far less proud and confident than she used to be.  She’s grown cleverer, but warier.  They no longer jump into things as they once did.  Jumping into things is what almost got them killed.  They blame themself for the war, for all the deaths and harm that’s come to all in the sea.  She’s desperate to prove herself worthy again.  She needs to fix things.  Silver is constantly on edge after some of her pod turned on her, after the mermaids fought back.  They half expect to be killed on land by a mermaid or human.  

Silver still wants what she wanted before the war.  A place to belong, to be safe.  Now she doubts if anywhere is safe for anyone.  At night whenever she can, they swim patrol around the port.  They don’t know what killed that human or what’s killing sirens and mermaids, but maybe if they find out they can kill it and she’ll be welcomed back.  Silver wants back permanently in the ocean by any means necessary, even if it puts her own life at risk.  Maybe the mermaids are right that it’s the sirens’ fault.  Maybe the same thing that created the sirens created the danger.  She doesn’t really know what she believes right now except that it’s her fault.

CONNECTIONS

AMETHYST: you see this mermaid princess as cold as the ice she rules; dark and haunting, harsh and cruel. when the first hints of unrest in assyria came, she was the first to throw pointed fingers towards your sea, and you hate her for it. unfortunately, your fear of what she would do to you has taken hold, so you hang back instead of fighting.

SHIPWRECK: port vale has been a mark of failure in your eyes; hiding on land proving to your realm that you are unworthy of truly being the captain of your sea. you can feel your grip on your sirens slipping, but they encourage you. somehow, they have noticed you are special, or different, and you want to know them more. you don’t care they are human and it’s a dangerous connection, they make you feel like you are worth something… finally.

GOLD: of all the sirens, she is the one to respect and understand you the most. the others think your mistakes define you, but not her. often, she is there with advice and guidance, willing to support you and help you cover up the worst of your missteps. without her, you’d have failed long ago… but in port vale, you feel disconnected from each other. something has changed, and you aren’t sure what.

Any fc ideas for Silver? And could I get a sort of tldr of the war? I'm still a little confused on the premise <3

sure! you can find some suggested fcs for silver under the cut, and i'll go into a little more of an explanation on the war for you here! our TIMELINE page is a really helpful tool for figuring out the exact way things went down.

so basically - the mermaids were given their kingdoms by the sea goddess who created them. two hundred and fifty years after that, a new species began to appear in the water; the sirens. confused and a little freaked out, the mermaids & the sea goddess didn't know what to think, and in the years following, there was quite a power struggle as the two kinds clashed. the mermaids didn't want to give up their rule & territory, and the sirens were tired of being pushed to the outskirts of the sea and chased away by the mermaids.

the assyrian war lasted from Year 1745 to Year 1971, ending when a peace treaty was finally agreed upon between the sirens and mermaids. by then, the sirens had managed to conquer some territory for themselves, the seven seas. it's safe to say there is still some tension between the territory borders, with sirens desiring expansion and mermaids worried about their defenses. hope this helps! let us know if you have any more questions related to the war, too. see under the cut for suggest fcs for silver.

hello! thank you so much for your interest in surf! going back and re-reading the connection, i can see where the confusion came, so let me clarify a bit better about the surf/palladium connection!

it's not specifically canon that surf ever loved palladium - the line in the connection refers to how surf met palladium on their honeymoon with someone else - and that is touched upon a bit deeper in palladium's connection here;

SURF: you met them once before, in your other travels on land in your pursuit of education. they were different then, and much more broken now, but the coincidence that you’ve both found a way to port vale is not lost on you. it isn’t usual to see the same human face twice; so this, you believe, has some sort of cosmic destiny assigned to it. who are you to challenge the universe, and what it may throw your way?

so surf and palladium only met once, years ago, when surf was still married to their partner (and on their honeymoon!) before their love abandoned them, leaving nothing more than a journal! since we have palladium currently a taken character, i can say that they were in australia for over forty years - so your exact timeline of when the meet-cute took place would be your domain to decide! please let me know if i can answer anything else, and sorry for the confusion there!
