So, with its sharp teeth, it seems like the Space Slugs would have to be ambush predators, like a spaceborne Bobbit Worm.

The things are stupid huge. The Millennium Falcon is bigger than a Lockheed C-130 and can fit through the gaps between its teeth.

There must be some kind of asteroid belt ecosystem to support them, even if they have a geologically slow metabolism most of the time.
And so, my astrobiology thesis that Exogorths are natural predators of the Purgill, being that those are relatively large spacefaring organisms, and can use hyperspace to independently travel from one asteroid field to another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yes, there are other titanic mobile space creatures like Summa-Verminoth, but the clouds around the Kessel Run seem like an entirely different and much more nutrient-dense environment. Who knows what else was hiding in there?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
If we take Legends into consideration, Colossus Wasps, Space Grazers, and Oswaft could also be contenders, though the Stenness Node Wasps are specifically said to be predators of Exogorths, not their prey.

Military training began for Peeta on October 3rd 75 DD
His episode was in the 3rd day of his training.
On the first day of his training he met with Boggs who walked him to squad 452, then a guard was arraigned for Annie and Peeta. Katniss was lethargic but determined to prove she is fine, but does not get the guard without Peeta saying she is unfit in temperament and physical abilities to get the guard. This is a day after Katniss went to her room reclusive after a lunch with Peeta, Annie and Finnick where Katniss called Peeta a Mutt and Peeta agreed with her and said that the mutation benefited her at the cost of a ripped apart larynx and brought her closer to her lover Gale. Peeta received his uniform which had slight variations from Katniss's uniform, such as a badge, Peeta's military rank was also added as a permanent tattoo on his arm. Peeta also carried a black military helmet but wore a cap.

Peeta's gun looked similar to a Sten Gun or Heckler & Koch MP5 called the "Firestick 9".
Annie had the same gear.
When Peeta was in squad 451 he was disarmed but sometimes used his gun in battle against the capitol.
His identification number was 198358 soldier node 32.

And, for Wynne, Sten and Loghain, number 5. go on a six hour road trip with (no car radio, you choose who drives), sit next to on a six hour plane flight, sit across from on a six hour train journey
Oh my god this is certainly a selection
Sten has solid driver vibes. I cannot and should not drive, but i think he would tolerate my shotgun commentary (mostly criticisms of other poor drivers). And he understands more than the rest the virtue of comfortable silence. That's so key for a long car ride.
Wynne for the plane ride if only because those seats are tiny, and Sten and Loghain would provide too fierce a competition. I am small and weak, I will not win that battle for leg space. I'm just hoping my seat is closer to the window than hers. I don't trust her about bathrooms.
And I suppose that leaves Loghain to sit across from on the train which oooh that's gonna be so uncomfortable. No winning with him lol. I have to admit I've only been on a train once before and only for like 6 minutes to my destination, but if it's anything like the bus, I'm gonna be so good at ignoring him. I assume the spirit of no car radio means I can't ignore Loghain either with my switch or phone, but I can distract myself pretty damn well with a window. A six hour train ride would have to be traveling a decent physical distance which can for sure scratch the geology nodes in my brain. Can't do that in a plane.
That's really the trick to surviving encounters with pains in the ass: Can't be thinking about whatever words are falling out of their mouths when you're thinking about slopes and glaciers

Colossus Wasps and Ithullan Ore Haulers
Tumblr media
Hailing from the Stenness Node region and specifically the world of Ithull, Colossus Wasps were titanic insects that averaged between 1 and 1.5 kilometers long with wings up to several hundred meters in length. The wasps spent most of their time migrating from world to world, consuming cosmic rays, stellar radiation and occasionally other interstellar creatures like space slugs.
Their large size and adaptations for living in space gave the native sentients of the Node the idea to collect the corpses of wasps that had naturally succumbed and convert them into space ships. Despite the Nessies’ insistence that only wasps that had died of natural causes be used, the high bounty placed on intact carapaces meant that more than one group resorted to poaching, not an easy hunt given the wasps’ large size.
Tumblr media
Once a wasp body was secured, the Nessie engineers began modifying the shell for use as a transport by removing the internal organs to make room for crew spaces, generators, computers. a command deck and the all important cargo holds. In order to maximize the available space, two ion engines were mounted to the outside of the abdomen for realspace travel, while maneuvering surfaces and jets were attached to the legs. Two heavy turbolasers in the thorax and several lower-powered blasters gave the Ore Hauler defensive firepower against pirates, and the wasps’ own thick shells provided ample protection against radiation, micrometeoroids and pirate blasters.

*pokes head in through your door* Did someone request OC asks? :D
How did your Warden react to Zevran’s failed attempt on their life? Were they amused? Angry?
Did Alistair’s parentage surprise your Warden? How did your Warden’s feelings on the nobility affect their relationship with Alistair?
How did your Warden respond to Wynne’s comments if your Warden romanced someone? Did they tell her it was love or that the relationship was purely physical?
Did your Warden believe that Leliana was telling the truth about her vision from the Maker or were they skeptical?
How did your Warden speak to Sten? Did they fight with him often or were they more humorous in their responses?
How did your Warden react to Loghain’s fierce love for his daughter? Did they share a strong sense of loyalty to their own family?
*whips my head around smiles* That's meeeee! The OC asker in the flesh! Or well, digital. But, pah! 'Tis I! >:D
*rubs hands together* Let's do this! I've itching to share more of Elise, so thank you so much! X3
How did your Warden react to Zevran's failed attempt on their life? Were they amused? Angry?
Gonna be completely honest, Elise found it amusing. XD
At first.
She's lived her entire life in the Circle, a dismal cage with gilded bars. When she was conscripted, Elise looked at the world around her and went, 'I love it. I love it.' Tomes and stories that told of grand assassinations, trysts, and all manner of political intrigue were riveting to a mind that only knew stone walls and high, unreachable windows. So, when Elise found herself apart of an attempted assassination, a Crow assassination no less? Her heart sped up, her palms turned sweaty with excitement, and her magic sparked to life with more ease than she had ever thought herself capable of.
Obviously, when faced with Zevran after the fact, questions and answers holding dark shadows, Elise snapped out of her romanticizing. She saw that pretty bound books and an author's 'personal' representation of events they knew nothing about was merely fantasy; they weren't true, they weren't idyllic. They were cold. They were hard. They were just veneer to paint over the atrocity of war and power-mongering. People suffered for what she found so enthralling, and Zevran's attack, and later his past, makes her realize that she is truly naive of a world that she claims she loves.
Elise knew nothing about the outside world. Just like those authors knew nothing of the suffering of the people caught in the crossfire of war--those that had to do ungodly things just to survive.
Did Alistair’s parentage surprise your Warden? How did your Warden’s feelings on the nobility affect their relationship with Alistair?
Alistair's lineage did surprise Elise somewhat. However, in Ostagar, when she had met Cailan, and then went on to meet Alistair, something...stuck. There was a resemblance; Elise could see it in the faces of two seemingly different men. Cailan and Alistair don't look exactly alike, of course, but there are a few characteristics that made Elise pause while speaking to Alistair and go, 'Where have I seen the slope of his nose before?' or 'If his hair was just a shade lighter, he would be..' So, when Alistair finally shares the truth of his birthright, Elise takes it in relative stride, but it also makes her heart sink a bit.
By Redcliffe (in my play-through at least), Elise is beginning to development feelings for Alistair. She finds his presence comforting, his views refreshing, his resolve endearing, and his gentle awkwardness lovable. He's been with her since the beginning, when she was mildly frightened and unsure of a cage with no bars, but still a cage due to what she was; a mage. Alistair saw that, knew what she was, and still, he treated her like an equal--reaching out when nightmares took her, offering her a witty quip or a playful smile to try and lift her back up from the mud, and reassuring her she wasn't alone in this long and bloody task of their's.
Alistair treated Elise as a person, and Elise offers that same kindness when he reveals his connection to the throne. However, she can see the warmth in his eyes fade a little upon telling her, a crooked, wry smile replacing the jovial air of another, and Elise knows that Alistair knows.
She's a mage and he, a king. There is no happy ending in store for them, but love is as persistent as it is fleeting, and they fall into each other's orbit despite the pain it later brings them both.
How did your Warden respond to Wynne’s comments if your Warden romanced someone? Did they tell her it was love or that the relationship was purely physical?
Elise was kind of belligerent, not going to lie. It's actually the first time I envision that hardened side of her beginning to shine through.
When Wynne points out the fact that she and Alistair are both Wardens, and that he's the son of a king destined to follow in those heavy footsteps, it only succeeds in bringing those painful fears to the fore and reasserting to Elise that she can't be happy because of what she is. This conversation happens after the Broken Circle quest, so Elise is still haunted by those horrors of a home sundered, and most of all, Cullen and his words towards her. So, two sources have said to her, 'You can't have this because of what you are.', and that tears into Elise's slowly hardening heart. She knows her duty, she knows what she is and she's proud of it, and Elise believes that shouldn't bar her from what others are freely given.
"I am a mage. I am a Warden." Elise spat, fists clenching and unclenching sporadically as she glared into the elderly mage before her. "But, I'm also a woman--a person, Wynne. I have feelings, and I won't sweep those aside just because you think it's best, because the 'world' somehow suddenly demands it!" Magic tingled at her finger tips, sparks latching onto tiny energy nodes of the Fade as her hands began to shake. "I care for Alistair. I want to see him happy because this world hasn't let him be so! So...so, fuck your concern and wisdom! I have choices, Alistair has choices, and if that's irresponsible to you, then leave because my heart won't change. No matter what pain it could bring me!"
Did your Warden believe that Leliana was telling the truth about her vision from the Maker or were they skeptical?
Now, I think I've mentioned that Elise is somewhat religious. She believes in the Maker and Andraste, but like Dorian says in Inquisition, she doesn't believe in the Chantry's rhetoric.
In regards to Leliana's vision, the magically curious side of Elise comes out and she ponders if the vision was the work of it. She doesn't outright ask Leli that, knowing that it would probably be rebuffed or met with a, 'I'm...not sure.', but it lingers in the depths of her mind and Elise tries to do some research into similar occurrences, to no avail. All Elise knows is that Leliana finds strength and hope in what she saw, so she doesn't challenge it and spoil it with practical applications. After all, the nature of faith is shaped by the unknown, and Elise always did like a good mystery. So, even if she didn't completely believe it herself, Elise knows what it meant to Leliana to have that warmth long denied by a Chantry brazier.
How did your Warden speak to Sten? Did they fight with him often or were they more humorous in their responses?
Elise was fascinated by Sten. She had only read of the Qunari in the few meager tomes she could find--most struck from the records by the Chantry due to 'heresy'. So, when at camp, Elise took the time to learn from the stoic man. She asked questions, listened to his answers, sat, mouth agape at some of the more profound stories Sten would opt to share, and soaked it up like a sponge. Elise would challenge some viewpoints of Sten's, those concerning mages and the general people of Ferelden, but mainly because she wanted to hear his side. Elise was eager and undeterred by Sten's brusque, aloof, and outwardly annoyed demeanor. She just saw a person--a person who she could learn from. And I think Sten responded well to that curiosity and open-mindedness, even if he didn't show it all that well.
How did your Warden react to Loghain’s fierce love for his daughter? Did they share a strong sense of loyalty to their own family?
So, to start, Elise doesn't remember her family very well. She was taken to the Circle at young age, barely able to remember how she even came to the tower. But, her found family is everything to her and she would die, be tortured, and branded every manner of beast if it kept them safe.
And I'm not lying when I say that Loghain's love for Anora, and she for him, was what made Elise want to spare him.
In that moment, as the teyrn knelt upon the floor before her, sword limp, eyes downcast with all manner of emotion, and blood dribbling from wounds she had managed in a duel unnecessary, unfair, Elise didn't see a traitor, a murderer of Wardens and kings, or even a man whose sense of duty had been so warped that it led him astray.
No, she saw none of that. Instead, she saw a father--a father of both daughter and country.
Elise drew her lips tight, tasting the salt of her sweat and a hint of iron. Her hand shook upon the hilt of her sword, suddenly feeling too heavy, too much as she continued to keep it trained upon the defeated man. All eyes were upon her, their gazes like wildfire and bramble--burning, piercing, anticipating. Yet, she could not move. She could not do it.
She could not take a father from his child! She could not! Not when it wasn't necessary! Not when the Queen had asked, pleaded with tears in her blue eyes for a way out of this foolishness, for an end to the constant suffering! There was a way! There was!
"I--", Elise began, as shaky as her arm that brandished a sword instead of a staff. The tremors increased as the wildfire upon her back blazed, and her grip faltered, sword plummeting to the ground with a harsh clang. "I...won't kill you. I accept your surrender. I accept."
There were gasps and whispers of disbelief, but she blocked them out as tired eyes traveled from that abandoned weapon to her face, searching, seeking, and quietly suspicious. But, before any words could be uttered between them or explanations could be voiced, there was a shout--a familiar, but dreaded shout of anger, of disbelief, of betrayal most foul. One word. Just one, and it was sharper than her sword that lay upon the ground, coated with blood of thought up foes.
"What!?"
----
*drags hand down in front of my face in an elaborate fashion* And scene!
Thank you so much, friend! I hope you like the answers even if they are a tad long! :D

hey Eva, first of all your blog is cool and interesting and nice. So i got me a new phone 2 weeks ago, insralled GF, flashforward to this evening - i dont have any resources, i run out of cores, all my eshelons are 50ish level and i cant beat 4-6. I guess i mught have stupid :( Gimme any advices please or i dunno. Sorry for bothering you, dont know who else to ask/
So! First of all, sorry for my late reply!
Now, on the topic of resources. Try to have logistics running as often as possible. I assume you've only got the starting 4 echelons, so try to have at least one squad constantly out for missions, though two is better. Before you head to bed or any time you're not gonna be playing for a while, send all four echelons on missions. Try to prioritize ammo and rations the most, cause that's what you'll use the most.
For other resources, try to complete as many daily, weekly, and career missions as you can. Additionally, look at the achievements in the Index tab. You can get plenty of things like gems and tokens for free. With tokens you can roll gacha for dorm furniture, which increases dorm comfort, and in turn gives you more batteries daily. Use the batteries to upgrade facilities.
With facilities, some of the most important ones to max as soon as possible are the Data Room and the Forward Basecamp. The better your Data Room, the more exp you earn, which you can then turn into combat reports and fast-track your dolls to high levels. The FOB is great because you basically get free stuff. A small(ish) amount of resources gets currencies that can be used on the black market shop. Sometimes you also get things like cores, tokens, and even 4 or 5 star gear!
But the black market is good because you can get resources like combat reports, cores, and batteries in huge supply quickly. To make the best of the expeditions, use the advantaged dolls as often as possible. They give far better bonuses than just high level dolls. (Though high level helps a bit.) Also, pets determine where your expedition is most likely to explore and therefore what resource they are most likely to collect. Dogs like the snow, cats like the city, birds like the forest, and "others" bring you to the wasteland.
On that note, upgrading the pet rescue centre is helpful to the FOB. More pets means you're more likely to have the advantaged pets of the week. Also, pets in a dorm give a bonus 1000 comfort points up to three pets per dorm, meaning more batteries. Which means you can buy more pets and upgrades. Lots of growth in GFL is exponential.
Now, back to some of the other resources I was talking about. Gems. The gacha currency that lets you buy the other gacha currency. Some of the most important investments for your early game gems are echelons and dorms. More echelons means you can have more teams on logistics runs. More dorms means more batteries. Extra repair slots are also nice, so that can be a secondary goal for your gems. The monthly gem card is a good deal if you're willing to spend some money. 5 bucks (Canadian) gets you 30 gems a day for 30 days, 900 total. Sometimes there's also a rate up on the cards, getting 60 daily for a week.
Next, let's talk about things that burn resources. One of the things I did at the start was not at all understand crafting. More resources aren't immediately better. There's plenty of guides on maximizing your resource value per roll, providing you know what you want to roll for. For your four daily crafts of dolls (this gets you a free token, same for equipment!) either go bare minimum, or 130, 130, 130, 30. This can get you a decent chance at 3, 4, and 5 star dolls for low prices, and if you get duplicates of dolls you've trained, you can retire them for 1, 3, and 5 cores respectively. (However, many 5 star pistols are among the few dolls that are truly worth raising duplicates of.)
At the same time however, higher rarity dolls are expensive to raise, especially early on. If you don't have a duplicate of a doll when dummy linking, you will use cores. 2 stars will need: 1, 1, 2, and 3. 3 stars will need: 3, 3, 6, and 9. 4 stars will need: 9, 9, 18, and 27. 5 stars will need: 15, 15, 30, and 45 cores for maxed dummy links. See how this can burn cores? Especially when you're more likely to have duplicates of less rare dolls?
Try to focus on some of the better 2 and 3 star dolls! You'll find that plenty of dolls are better (or worse) than their stars suggest.
Of 2 stars, M1911, M1895, PPK, M3, MP 40, FN-49, BM-49 (VM-49), G3, Galil, SIG-510, LWMMG, MP-446, and cutecat IDW have all done me well.
From the 3 star pool: M9, G17, Ingram, Skorpion, STEN, M14, (quite possibly one of the best girls in the game, even pre-MOD3 she can beat many 5 star rifles and ARs!) SV-98, FNC, M2 HB, and GSh-18 are choices I've found quite helpful.
Raising many of these dolls is also good because later you can unlock their "MOD" upgrades, 1 through 3. This gives them extra abilities, better stats, unique equipment, new art, and some side stories! Though this is more endgame content.
Another thing. Even though I listed a few MGs in there, for now, try to avoid MGs, and also shotguns. They use lots of ammo and rations respectively. They're more for endgame or weird stuff.
As for getting through lots of the early story. Use the AR Team members. Do not sleep on them. Eventually they will become purposely overpowered for story reasons because of MOD3. They are some of your best dolls for just melting enemies, and M4 is special in that her buff tiles effect ARs instead of SMGs.
For most earlier content, teams made of ARs and SMGs are best. Steady damage and SMGs have good evasion to stay in the fight longer. You can maybe mix a pistol or rifle in there for buffs, or if you need to kill other snipers. Rifle dolls, unlike other units, target the enemies furthest away (within range) first, and work forward. This makes them good for preventing your tanks from getting shredded by snipers with accuracy that out classes your evasion.
Also, having "dummy" echelons can help with clearing maps cheaply. If you are cleaning enemies off a map, you can probably get away with having an echelon for combat, and others that only need to capture nodes. So since they are not going into combat, you can use a single pistol doll for very minimal resource loss if they have to retreat.
As for 4-6 you can likely beat it by having a strong echelon rush to Intruder as soon as possible, with another echelon defending your command post. An ARSMG team should work quite well against her, with the SMGs dodging her attacks and the ARs chipping at her health. As a general tip, flash grenade skills do not affect bosses, but other grenades do, and this can make smoke grenades a good choice as they lower enemy ROF and movement speed. The ROF debuff can keep pressure off your dolls for a little bit. If you need to, have a third echelon behind the one you spawn in the north if they get too beat up getting to Intruder. Then have the fresh squad attack her instead.
Uh. I think that's all. A lot of rambling from me. Probably didn't make it as clear as it should be. But hey, I'm trying, and honestly I'm still sorta noob-ish myself. Check out people like @scarletlotus182 @commander-frostii @give-fnc-chocolate @rpk-16 and @shikikanshenanigans too, 'cause they're better than me at this lol.
P.S. If I have any glaring errors, please tell me, guys.

(@Connor and friends) [Ending of the movie]
<The Butterfly Mewman is seen walking through the corridors of the core maintenance brig, slowly making her way out of it all with the Semi-Organic Droid electrically failing in her arms. The former was trying her best to hold her tears back.>
Semi-Organic Droid: Know… *buzz* *static* this… *buzz* I–
<The Butterfly Mewman lost her composure and suddenly started crying as she carried him while slowly walking.>
Butterfly Mewman: S-stay with me! Don’t give up on me, you hear?! Stay with me!
<The Butterfly Mewman stopped altogether as her tears fell on her cheeks. Her grip was tight around his metallic body as she sobbed.>
Semi-Organic Droid: Li…*buzz*…sten.
<Weakly, the Semi-Organic Droid’s right arm reached up for the Butterfly Mewman’s cheek, his steel appendages rubbing against her face. She turned to face him right before he dragged his upwards her own. His forehead met hers before he discharged a small electrical arc to her forehead, giving her a synthetic equivalent of a kiss>
<Butterfly Mewman is shocked as S.O.D.’s eye nodes looked at her weakly but with sincerity.>
Semi-Organic Droid: Know… *static* this… *buzz*… I… *buzz* will *static* always love *static* you… too… for–*buzz*–ever.
<Slowly, the S.O.D.’s eye nodes starting slowly fading as the Butterfly Mewman gasped slightly. After a few moments of struggling, the S.O.D.’s metallic frame slowly went limp as the Butterfly Mewman came to the realization.>
Butterfly Mewman: No… no… h-hey, stay with me, wake up!
<She tried shaking the synthetic awake but to no avail. Her tears went down like a river as she fell to her knees and buried her head on the unit’s shoulder. Crying quietly as the scene slowly zooms out of focus.>
Nova and missy openly weep, holding each other and crying as Connor shakes his head, muttering under his breath about how he could’ve made better, stronger hands and grips while jack stretches his body and walks off*

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma in Denmark 1996–2012: A national prospective study of 219 patients
Tumblr media
Publication date: April 2018 Source:Cancer Epidemiology, Volume 53 Author(s): Gitte Bjørn Hvilsom, Stefano Christian Londero, Christoffer Holst Hahn, Sten Schytte, Henrik Baymler Pedersen, Peer Christiansen, Katalin Kiss, Stine Rosenkilde Larsen, Marie Louise Jespersen, Giedrius Lelkaitis, Christian Godballe BackgroundAnaplastic thyroid carcinoma (ATC) is the least common but most malignant thyroid cancer. We aimed to examine the characteristics as well as evaluate the incidence, prognostic factors, and if introduction of a fast track cancer program might influence survival in a cohort of ATC patients.MethodsA cohort study based on prospective data from the national Danish thyroid cancer database DATHYRCA and the national Danish Pathology Register including 219 patients diagnosed from 1996 to 2012, whom were followed until death or through September 2014.ResultsWe found the median age in the 7th decade, the majority of patients being women presenting with a growing mass at the neck, diagnosed with stage T4b disease. At diagnosis, 56% of the patients had lymph node metastasis and 38% distant metastasis. We observed one- and five-year survival of 20.7% and 11.0%, respectively. Both univariate and multivariate analyses showed age (above 73.6 years), respiratory impairment, T4b stage, and distant metastasis at diagnosis to be significant prognostic factors. Further, introduction of a national fast track cancer program increased survival nearly two-fold.ConclusionAs new information, our study adds “respiratory impairment at diagnosis” and “introduction of a national fast track cancer program” to the list of already established prognostic indicators for ATC. http://ift.tt/2s3cO00

4 of the most game-changing developments in tech
Technological developments are, inherently, game changers. With each advancement made in the tech we use – from popular consumer electronics to software developments in niche markets – we pave the way for the next.
Packt, creators of the skills learning platform Mapt, asked some of its developers-turned-bestselling authors for their opinions on what have been – and will be – the biggest game changers in the tech industry. Here’s what they said.
Java is king?
While Java still is, and probably will remain, a staple technology, a range of factors – including the development of new languages, and the rise of JavaScript on the server – have meant that it now faces more competition than ever.
Packt author Luis Augusto Weir says that when he started his career, many developers were doubtful of the promises made by other languages, and would often stick to what they knew. “I was initially a PHP/JavaScript developer and the Java guys thought such languages would never kick off in the enterprise,” he says. “It just so happened that it was the opposite!”
21 top examples of JavaScript
“Java is still a major language,” explains Weir, “but others like Node/JavaScript, Go, Ruby and PHP are also major in the enterprise. They’re getting more popular with each day.”
Author Sten Vesterli agrees. He says, “I’m seeing more and more JavaScript frontend development, so I’m personally making myself conversant with Oracle JET and other JavaScript toolkits.”
Java is now 21-years-old, and still dominates in many surveys (Java came third in Packt’s 2016 Skill Up report), but there’s no question that these days there’s a lot more on the buffet table to choose from. Can Java remain relevant in the face of new developments, or will developers start to look for a better toolkit to help them achieve what they need?
The best is tech to come
Packt author Robert van Mölken, started developing when he was just 11 years old, creating games with his friend using QBasic. For him, the biggest change in technology hasn’t yet happened – because we’re on the very cusp of it right now.
“I’m personally investing a lot in IoT and disruptive innovations like beacons, blockchain, machine learning and NoOps,” says van Mölken. “All these things are going to change our world completely in the next year. With the rise of these innovations and quantum computing, the world will change so fast toward 2020 that it will probably be a little scary.”
“In addition to this, we’re coming a long way with the cloud,” he continues. “This is because of different architecture, integration patterns, and the decreasing need for operations. I think the biggest change has yet to come, when the adoption rate of cloud increases.”
Humans need not apply
Like many in the tech industry, the biggest development in technology for Vesterli has been the growth of machine learning. But while studies such as this one from the University of Oxford suggest that the top jobs most at risk of being taken over by AI are taxi drivers and receptionists, Vesterli is more interested in the role machine learning will take back in its place of origin: the tech industry.
“I think machine learning has the opportunity to make a significant dent in the huge backlog of unbuilt IT systems,” says Vesterli. “Every organisation I have worked with wants to use more IT, but they are unable to get the skilled developers they need, and also have a hard time managing large portfolios of IT projects.”
“The big challenge machine learning is still facing, however, is accountability,” he says. “We’ve reached the point where an IT system can analyse huge amounts of data and improve a bank’s bottom line by making better credit decisions, but we still can’t ask it to explain why it came to that specific decision. When somebody cracks that problem, machine learning can improve the productivity of IT by an order of magnitude.”
DIY IT
Self-service IT is quickly becoming the norm within many businesses, with the aim of decreasing the demands made on IT departments and time taken to request approvals. While there are a few concerns about giving so much capability to users (not least whether or not they are equipped to successfully use such systems), as those veterans out there who had to show users how to plug their keyboard in or set up their emails might remember, it is possible to successfully implement a new technology or system and have users adapt to it, so long as the right support is provided.
For author Adrian Ward, self-service IT is not only the thing that has changed in the tech industry the most so far, but it’s also “the most exciting trend on the horizon”. Why? Ward explains that giving power to users, whether through desktop or cloud tools, is the quickest way to encourage adoption of new technologies. With self-service IT, something that could otherwise take months to adopt across a company could be integrated in a matter of days. What’s more, having a slow process on the side of the end user could even have serious implications for the adoption of more radical technologies in the long run.
Want to get to grips with the next game-changer? Packt has launched Mapt, an online learning platform built exclusively for professional developers to help them gain a competitive edge by filling in knowledge gaps and charting learning journeys towards professional goals. Built for, and powered by, developers, Mapt by Packt aims to “help the world put software to work in new ways”.
