sorry if my rambling is not cohesive, but MAN i have so much to thank haikyuu for. hinata shoyo, in particular.

the first time i watched haikyuu, i remember that although i loved hinata, he gave me a lot of second-hand embarrassment (god forbid i accidentally get an authority figure's wig blown off). i loved his drive and passion, but i felt all twisty inside whenever he got humbled or criticized. i felt uncomfortable whenever he'd start rivalries with other players out of nowhere. but it was the s2 and s4 training camp arcs that made me realize why i felt that way; hinata was the embodiment of someone i was afraid to be.

it didn't help that i started haikyuu during the last month of my last semester. it was just one humbling moment after another. i made a fool of myself during a practical exam. i kept coming to my classes and exams late. i could barely study and write papers with the same energy i used to. i delayed and eventually discontinued promising projects. i just felt defeated, that i was not as gifted, smart, or competent as everyone made me out to be. i was so so close to giving up, but watching hinata's journey somehow turned me back around.

i hated being embarrassed. i hated sucking at things i thought i could/want to be good at. i hated the thought of other people saying negative things about me, whether those are rumors or factual statements. but all this made me do was run away, stay afraid, and miss out on things that could have helped me grow.

hinata though? he realizes his weaknesses, and actively finds ways to improve himself in the training arcs. every lightbulb moment and added skill is a middle finger to everyone who underestimated him. he reflects on the valid criticism that is given to him, even if it's hard to hear. he is successful because he has the right mindset that helps him through whatever life throws at him.

since i'm starting clinical internship soon, i'm so glad that hinata (and the entirety of haikyuu, really) brought back positivity into my life. even though the uncertainty terrifies me, i am so excited and grateful for all the learning opportunities i'll have. even if i make some mistakes, receive harsh criticism, or have a hard time, it is not the end for me. i won't lose my potential just like that.

anyway, i won't be playing volleyball anytime soon, but i suppose this is my "little giant" moment. hinata, you are so loved. thank you. <3

Coming from the same developer that made Yellow Brick Road for the Sega Saturn, I wasn't expecting much from this game, but I was actually surprised. Understanding Gadget is pretty much an impossible task, just as previous games from Haruhiko Shono like Alice Interactive Museum or L-Zone, which garnered some modicum of notoriety when initially released for Macs (more of a testament to the lack of quality games for Mac than anything else really), the game is really not a game but instead an outlet for Mr. Shono's artistic visions. This is probably the clearest example of videogames as art, not in the "oh it means something so deep" sense of art (which is actually more allegory than anything else) but in the sense of art as an abstract representation of subconscious ideas through a medium, in this case, an interactive story of a meteor on its way to earth.

"Digital Artistry" has become a much too prostituted term these days, with just about anyone doing some meaningless shit on the net being called a "Digital Artist", but Shono was one of the original pioneers that dared not only to investigate the artistic possibilities behind 3D modeling and interactive storytelling, and he managed to release commercial products and not just relegate his creations to underground art houses. Granted, the timing couldn't have been better for Mr. Shono, at the time when he released his "games" the "multimedia revolution" was in full swing, and publishers everywhere were more than happy to publish anything with lots of video, images and that took up a lot of CDs...

Anyhow, provided you understand what you are getting into, you'll be rewarded with a pretty interesting "experience" when you load Gadget up. You'll essentially engage in a dream-like trip into the Gadget world with the excuse being for you to find a group of scientists that have some connection with the approaching meteor. The world of Gadget is a Victorian empire that is really a bizarre collection of impressionist, Victorian-like, sepia-colored locations that seem to borrow elements from noir mystery films, in fact, if there's someplace that reminds me of the Gadget world is the city from Metropolis and the one in Dark City, except the penchant for towering skyscrapers is replaced with a penchant for trains and mechanical machinery.

The characters in the game serve all sorts of symbolic purposes that would surely turn the game into a field trip for any psychologist who tries this game out. There's a disappearing mute kid that comes and goes for no apparent reason, a shady government officer called Theodore Slowslop (??) that comes and pushes you around the assignment, and I'll be damned if the scientist doesn't represent a fragment of a collective psyche. Similarly, there are a lot of actions in the game that obviously have a deeper meaning, such as getting off a train in the middle of nowhere to follow a glinting light, or chasing after that elusive kid, etc... If you've seen movies like Fellini's Amarcord then you know the deal, lots of seemingly meaningless characters, doing seemingly meaningless things that collectively are representative of a bigger meaning for the creators. Just what meaning is that it is pointless to try and figure out, being an intellectual game fit for those with just too much time on their hands. The fun part is figuring out what they mean to you and what emotions they trigger, it sure helps to be in sync with the creator, but otherwise, it's a free-for-all experience.

The technical aspect for the uh... "product" is truly top-notch, with stellar pre-rendered graphics (done by Shono himself) that illustrate the Gadget world with lush detail and a great sense of style. The game is really after all a Myst-like slideshow, so graphic detail is a given. As for the movies themselves they are lovingly animated but fall prey to the shitty compression techniques of the time using very early Quicktime videos. The haunting music composed by Koji Ueno deserves special praise however as it uses a collection of imaginative arrangements and experimental sounds that perfectly suit the game and create a surreal atmosphere for the game itself. It sounds like the more imaginative scores by Oscar/Golden Globe-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and it truly deserves to be listened to on its own.

Fair note, the PS1 port of Gadget comes on 4 CDs, just like Panzer Dragoon Azel for the Saturn. Just be thankful it did not come on 8 CDs much like the Saturn port of Phantasmagoria.

Maybe a new job coming?

I already signed my contract for next school year, but a job came open at a local university-owned autism center that I’m really excited about. I’d have to pay $750 to break my current contract, but I expect this job would pay more than $10k over what I’m making now and come with a stipend for CEUs, so that’s a small price to pay.

I even did a five month externship at this center while I was in grad school, so I already know the other two SLPs (one of which was my externship supervisor), the center’s director, and the chairwoman of the department of speech pathology because she was my masters capstone research advisor (and she wrote me a stellar recommendation for the job I currently have!). All of them are on the hiring committee.

I really think I have a great opportunity here 😁 And if I get the job, they offer a minimum 60% tutition reimbursement should I decide to get my doctorate or a second masters degree!

I'm so nervous about applying to grad school. I've been groomed by my parents to be a lawyer since the 6th grade. It wasn't until junior yr of college I finally allowed myself to realize I didn't wanna be one. No law school is not an option in my house. I want to be a speech language pathologist. My parents can't find out or else my mom might cut me off.everyday she asks when I'm applying to law school and which ones. I only have a 3.3 gpa, and the avg for my grad program is 3.7 (1/2)🌸🌸🌸

Nonie, first of all, try to calm yourself down. I know this issue is important, but you should calm yourself in order to solve this the best way possible.

With that out of the way, let me say that I completely understand how bad it is when parents try to get in the way of our future. But, let’s be honest here. You are the one who’s going to live your life in the future, so you should be the one making the choices right?

Speaking up to our family might look hard, but you need to try and make them see the truth: you don’t want to go to law school, so, if you go, you’ll probably waste your time, money and your parents time, and you’ll be ocupying a spot that could have gone to someone who would excel at it.

Nonie, if you want to be a speech language pathologist, the only thing I can say is for you to work your ass off for it. Give your 200%. Forgive me if I’m wrong, my school system is different from yours, but you said you only have 3.3 gpa and the average is 3.7, but that’s the average not the minimum required right? If so, that means you can still get in, right? Plus, you’re still studying for your GRE, so ace it nonie. Study hard and ace it.

Ayub” under Sections 467, 468, 1 471, 474, 420, 406 and 120B of the Indian Penal Code. -A complaint was lodged against the appellant with regard to the acquittal. After calling for comments from the appellant, and perusing the judgement and the order of reversal in appeal, the Administrative Judge on 24.02.2009 recommended an enquiry. -The enquiry report dated 10.05.2012 was adverse to the appellant. His comments were called for on 28.06.2012. On 20.12.2012, the appellant was informed that on basis of the enquiry, a censure entry had been recorded in his character roll. The order of punishment was accepted by the appellant without any challenge.- On 01.04.2016, a committee of three Hon’ble Judges constituted for screening of judicial officers for compulsorily retirement under the Rules recommended the compulsory retirement of the appellant which was endorsed by the Full Court on 14.04.2016 leading to the impugned order of compulsory retirement. The challenge laid out by the appellant to his order of retirement before the High Court was unsuccessful and thus the present appeal.= Quite apart from the scrutiny of his service records by the Screening Committee and again by the Full Court, the Division Bench again perused his ACRs and opined as follows: “We have perused the expunged portion of the annual remarks of the petitioner and found that rating of the petitioner as fair officer has not been expunged. Likewise, in the year 2008­09, 2009­10, 2010­11, the petitioner was posted as Additional District & Sessions Judge, Fast Track Court No.8, Pratapgarh and his disposal of work prescribed as Additional District Judge, Fast Track Court was found inadequate. Censure entry, recorded against the petitioner and considered by the Screening Committee and Full Court, still has not been expunged. The petitioner has never challenged the said censure entry, therefore, there is no substance in the arguments of the learned counsel for the petitioner that single censure entry relating to integrity could not be considered by the Screening Committee and Full Court. The expositions of law relied upon by the learned counsel for petitioner are of no help for the petitioner. The expositions of law relied upon by the learned counsel for the respondent is squarely applicable to the facts and circumstances of this case.” A person entering the judicial service no doubt has career aspirations including promotions. An order of compulsory retirement undoubtedly affects the career aspirations. Having said so, we must also sound a caution that judicial service is not like any other service. A person discharging judicial duties acts on behalf of the State in discharge of its sovereign functions. Dispensation of justice is not only an onerous duty but has been considered as akin to discharge of a pious duty, and therefore, is a very serious matter. The standards of probity, conduct, integrity that may be relevant for discharge of duties by a careerist in another job cannot be the same for a judicial officer. A judge holds the office of a public trust. Impeccable integrity, unimpeachable independence with moral values embodied to the core are absolute imperatives which brooks no compromise. A judge is the pillar of the entire justice system and the public has a right to demand virtually irreproachable conduct from anyone performing a judicial function. Judges must strive for the highest standards of integrity in both their professional and personal lives. The standard or yardstick for judging the conduct of the judicial officer therefore has necessarily to be strict. Having said so, we must also observe that it is not every inadvertent flaw or error that will make a judicial officer culpable. The State Judicial Academies undoubtedly has a stellar role to perform in this regard. A bona fide error may need correction and counselling. But a conduct which creates a perception beyond the ordinary cannot be countenanced. For a trained legal mind, a judicial order speaks for itself.

oh mannn i'm going to miss my aphasia/apraxia dyad clients after my teletherapy rotation ends 🥹 they truly make my tuesdays, like i find myself wanting to talk to them for longer than an hour

Because I need to vent about a reference letter.

I feel really awkward talking about this and venting because it seems to put me as a “victim” but I don’t think that’s fair. Basically, last Wednesday I emailed a couple profs and the researcher asking if they would be my references for SLP applications. Right away I heard back from my favourite prof and the researcher agreeing. I explained that a couple of the applications have a closer deadline but that did not seem to be a huge issue, though I felt terrible about asking them with such short notice and knew that it shouldn’t be done, and that was half the reason I didn’t want to apply.

The other prof (who I only needed as a second required academic reference for two of the schools) wasn’t getting back to me, so I emailed another prof who turned out to be on sabbatical so I’m not expecting a response (and today I emailed again after the following exchange saying I know it’s short notice and I don’t expect a response since she’s on sabbatical so just don’t think anything of it). Finally Sunday night at 11 this first prof gets back to me saying she doesn’t know me personally, so the letter would be short and not terribly specific but she would speak to the work I did in her class if I still wanted. She also sent me what she sends to her lab students who may look for reference letters as guidelines for when to ask (minimum four weeks in advance) and what information to provide (a CV, unofficial transcript, the deadlines and schools and special instructions in a spreadsheet, a statement of research intent if applicable, a list of lab duties if applicable, and a reminder of the grade received in a prof’s course if applicable). I responded to her email and said there are two forms I would like to fill out, although one of them requires a hard copy and the deadline is the 16th so I would like to have it by the end of this week, so please let me know if this is manageable or not. The other deadline is the 31st and also has a form to fill out and upload electronically. I provided my CV, my statement of interests I intend to send, my unofficial transcript, and the deadlines but not in a spreadsheet, as there were only two I listed them in the email. She got back to me (rather quickly this time in comparison) saying there is no way she can make the deadline for the first one as she had stated she needs a minimum of four weeks notice, but she would make an exception for the 31st even though it is very tight since she is also writing other reference letters. She also said that in my reply it seemed like I hadn’t read any of her previous email and to make sure I read it. I responded saying I completely understand, I just thought I’d ask just in case and I still would greatly appreciate her making this exception. I then again provided her with the form for the one school, a spreadsheet with the one school’s deadline and instruction, my unofficial transcript, my statement of interests, and a reminder of the grade I received in the course.  

What makes me upset about this, other than the fact I have no second academic reference for the one school, is that I feel like an idiot, while at the same time feeling like I no longer want her to be a referee for me. I knew that profs don’t like it when you come to them like this, and I know that most would prefer a month’s notice. I felt compelled to try because my parents’ really wanted me to apply so I did it. I knew I wasn’t close with this prof, and all I really needed her to do was check some boxes and say I was a good student in her class. I understand that of course she is very busy, and there are many other students that I’m sure she knows better that she is writing references for, and I don’t expect to be a priority. The way she responded to me made me feel like an idiot for even trying to ask her. And that she would “make an exception” for the 31st deadline makes me feel belittled and stupid. On the other hand, I’m angry because my original email was sent four weeks less one day before the deadline, she just then took four days to respond. Her comment that my reply suggested I didn’t read her email at all also makes me upset because I did and I tried to have everything. The only things I found that I missed was the reminder of the grade I received in her course (which was on the transcript and I know I shouldn’t just ask her to check that but still), not putting the school information in a spreadsheet, not providing hard copies (though I asked if she would like to meet in person and I could provide hard copies), and asking for references with deadlines closer than four weeks away. I felt like those things shouldn’t be enough to make her think that I hadn’t read the email. I feel like the only way it would have looked like I read the email would have been to reply with okay sorry it’s less than four weeks away forget it. Maybe to someone other than me my email reads like I hadn’t paid attention to her advice, but her response didn’t make me feel good.

The whole exchange makes me feel like I don’t want her reference at all. I’ve clearly made her discontent in some way and I dunno offended her? I know she wouldn’t do it if she didn’t have something good to say or at least nothing negative, and I do have my other reference which I think will be pretty good, but now I feel gross still asking her to do this. I know references for psych programs are different and I completely get it, but I had wished that I could have just said I really don’t need a stellar reference it could be just alright it’s fine I have another academic reference as well you’re my second one. I just feel ashamed and upset about the whole interaction and I was crying the whole time I tried to explain it to my dad and even as I type this. There are no other profs I can go to, as all my classes have always been too big for the prof to know who I am or I took so long ago the prof would not remember me at all. I knew I wasn’t a standout student in this prof’s class or anything, but I thought we were on decent terms and she would be more compassionate in discussing this. The angry side of me wants to rant about her as a haughty new prof trying to prove herself, but I know that doesn’t get me anywhere, and she deserves respect. I do understand the short timeline problem, I really do, but I think I just expected a nicer refusal than the one I got. Maybe it reads as more civil than I think, along with my emails being more naive than I think, but it doesn’t change that I feel upset. 

All I can do is move on, and if I can get my other references to make this deadline I’ll still send it and just wave my hand at the required two academic references. It just cuts my slim chances even more. It also makes me upset to see my idealistic parents not have believed this could happen, and still say things that just don’t and won’t happen. They don’t get it and I don’t know why I decided to listen to them anyway but here I am again having done what they asked and not feel good about it. That’s a whole other thing, and really an incredibly small thing and I am grateful they have pushed me this far, it’s just frustrating when they don’t believe me when I say that things like this could happen. Anyway that was a big long rant and I don’t know how much better I feel but gotta keep pushing forward.

oh goodness i like my new rotation so far!!! community practice is lovely. we talked about self-advocacy, so i opened up about my experiences with mental health (and how self-advocacy does me good) and im so so glad it was a safe space overall.

felt good because i was able to tell my batchmates about my situation and how they could help me.

also we had a surprise debate activity for a health topic and they put me in as the closing statement on the opposition LMAOOOOO i forgot how those parliamentary thingies work. my last debate was like, sophomore year of high school and i hated those HAHAHAHA

but today was good, i pushed myself to do things and it felt rewarding. i also rewatched the lecture i recorded and honestly idek why i felt so negative about it...it was fine!
