🔥 A game designer whose whole design corpus I admire.

I don't think I've read any designer's whole body of work, but I really love what Spencer Campbell does. Campbell's background is in psychology, and his day job is teaching people, and this understanding of how people learn and play really comes through in his work.

My go-to example of this is Slayers, whose "rule of four" (whenever you roll 4+, no matter what, it's a hit) is so simple my main group was able to pick it up instantly. However, the way each of the player classes iterate on that rule, with base moves that feel different even though they're all still working from this fundamental principal, is just stellar. (see my video praising Slayers' classes here).

The entire Lumen system is a testament to fast-paced, infinitely customizable combat weighted in players' favor. I had the pleasure of reviewing Sam Mui's take on Lumen (Lumen Ryder Core) as well as @ostrichmonkey's The World Ends with You-inspired Vibe Check, both of which are great examples of how Lumen creates the opportunity for modular builds, incentivizing video-game style combat optimization as well as loot loops which is just fascinating for a tabletop game.

And now with Hunt, he's moving away from dice rolling entirely because he wants to remove that obstacle from players, the chance that your turn might not be meaningful or fun, which is great. Cannot wait to see what comes out of Campbell's head next.

I've started watching Apple TV+ shows - and holy shamoley, Severance was amazing. I couldn't stop watching it from the first episode, which is rare for me these days with dramas. The focus on character development and the eerieness of Lumen were absolutely stellar. I found myself caring deeply about each character. And I think the plot twists were jaw dropping. I'm anxious to watch S2 but don't want to squander it, so I'll have to wait!! I think my favourite character is Irving :)) second is Mark - what great character development.

I think Black Bird should have probably been four episodes - some parts were a bit too draggy. But Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser gave really intense, nuanced performances and I'm really impressed! Taron Egerton is really handsome ahaha. But beyond that indeed a solid actor - the character's arrogance, feeling lost, fear, terror and despair were all well communicated. PWH was unpredictable - at times seemingly child-like, sometimes unhinged, sometimes confused, sometimes rageful and horrific. It's so tragic that the victims' bodies have not been recovered till date.

Jacob Böhme's spiritual development is based on the vision and inner and personal struggle of the inner man in the dual depth of the soul.

The Paracelsian Ternary of the Golden Chain consists of triads that express the dynamic Becoming of the Cosmos in Principles = 3 and Numbers 5 and the Kabbalistic Pentalpha 7 in the Process of Eternal Immanence.

The concept of melancholy – word – and its meaning derives from the Greek in reference to Black and (bile), in allusion and correspondence to the state of being and matter as Nigredo-Lead-Time.

Let us remember the Clharm of Böhme and his Bohmist system of Christian esotericism and a Christical and spiritual Alchemy embodied in the Three Ternary Principles: Nature=Macrocosm-Man=Microcosm-The Sacred Book-Bible=Word of God-Divine Word.

Transcendence is realized on two planes: that of the Absolute and that of Wisdom, as the plane of the Supreme Divinity is God making Himself KNOWN.

London Downtempo Playlist (YouTube)

Continuing to plumb the seemingly endless depths of London's *vast* underground electronic music landscape with this brief and random assortment of killer, underheard gems from the city's incredible downtempo scene.

Things kick off here with a cut from the Rapino Brothers, a pair of Italian guys who moved to London in the late 80s, and who are probably most famous for their very popular remix of the 1993 Italo-Eurodance classic, "The Rhythm of the Night," by Corona. The following year, they released a 12-inch called Go Ahead London, and its title track made its way onto Belgian ambient series Barramundi's first installment. Terrific, twinklingly bleepy affair with great string pads and a sweet trip-hoppy drum groove 😌. The song has a few different uploads on YouTube and has about 10.9K plays in total.

Now, towards the middle of this playlist is maybe my favorite downtempo track ever made, "At the River," by Groove Armada, which has millions of plays. But I actually used a much lesser-known different version of it here, which comes directly from a not-so-stellar Fatboy Slim mix from 2000 called Essential Selection, Vol. One (actually, that release is a double-disc and the second CD is a fantastic trance mix by none other than Paul Oakenfold). So, the first 80 seconds of this version of "At the RIver" happens to be the result of a really impressive transition between another gigantic hit from that late 90s era, Underworld's "Born Slippy," whose drums simply undergird the Groove Armada classic. And it's magic. Currently sitting at around 42.6K plays across its few uploads. A much, much lower play count than the original version.

Also, as London is a pretty diverse and multicultural metropolis, we've also got a pair of tunes here that definitely have an Eastern flair to them as well, even though I don't think that the people who made them are actually of any Eastern ethnicity themselves. "20 Camels," by Friends, Lovers & Family, aka Laurence Elliott-Potter, is on a Middle-Eastern trip hop-lounge tip, and originally comes from a 1998 comp that was released by electronic avantgarde label Law & Auder called Further East-Westercisms. It currently has ~17.8K plays across its handful of uploads. And little-known duo Radar's "Caravane" originates from a 1999 comp called Arabesque, but I found it on another Law & Auder comp from 2000 called East - Westercisms, Vol. 3. That one has about 61.6K plays among its bunch of uploads.

On the fringe world of Aethra Prime, a rogue transmission crackled through the holovids of every citizen, its message cryptic yet electrifying: “The Emergency Stellar Broadcast will awaken. Prepare for the Ten Cycles of Silence. Truth will burn through the dark.”

The source was unknown, but the date was precise—Cycle 24-25 of the Tenth Solar Span. Aethra’s twin suns cast eerie shadows as the deadline approached. Among the planet’s inhabitants was Kalia Vex, a star-scavenger with a knack for decoding signals lost to time. Her ship, The Lumen Shard, hummed with salvaged tech, its core pulsing with a fragment of a dead neutron star. Kalia had intercepted the broadcast herself, and unlike the panicked masses hoarding plasma rations, she saw opportunity. The Voidborn were real, she reckoned, and their signal was a map.

As Cycle 24 dawned, Aethra’s skies dimmed. The twin suns flickered, eclipsed not by moons but by a fleet of obsidian ships materializing from hyperspace. The Emergency Stellar Broadcast (ESB) erupted across every frequency—visuals of collapsing empires, confessions of corrupt Sphere Lords, and glimpses of a weaponized star called the Lumin Crucible. Then, silence. All comms died. The holovids went black. The promised Ten Cycles of Silence had begun.

Kalia launched The Lumen Shard into the void, tracing the ESB’s origin to the Starlink Nebula—a web of ancient satellites repurposed by the Voidborn. Her crew—Zorak, a hulking cyborg with a penchant for plasma axes, and Lyra, a telepathic navigator bonded to a sentient crystal—braced for the unknown. The nebula shimmered with encrypted light, and Lyra’s crystal pulsed, whispering, “They reset the galaxy’s debt… but at what cost?”

Midway through the third cycle, they found it: a derelict station broadcasting the ESB on loop. Inside, Kalia uncovered the truth. The Voidborn weren’t conquerors—they were liberators, wielding the Lumin Crucible to dismantle the Council’s tyranny. The “Ten Days of Darkness” was a galactic purge, a blackout to sever the Sphere Lords’ control over commerce, communication, and consciousness. But the Crucible’s power was unstable. One misstep, and it could ignite the nebula, wiping out half the quadrant.

The tenth cycle loomed. Kalia faced a choice: join the Voidborn and risk annihilation, or sabotage the Crucible and preserve the flawed galaxy she knew. Zorak argued for war; Lyra pleaded for peace. Kalia gazed at the star fragment in her ship’s core, its faint glow mirroring her resolve. She patched into the ESB, broadcasting her own signal: “The truth is yours. Choose.”

As the silence broke, the galaxy awoke—not to unity, but to a thousand voices, each claiming their own dawn.
