Background for those who missed the first poll: We are assuming many of you have seen the Oliver Stark interview with Gay Times that came out earlier today (or earlier int eh day this poll was originally posted). If so, you know one of the questions the interviewer asked was 'Who is Buck's Diva?', as in his musical diva of choice. Like the many iconic divas often loved by the LGBTQ+ community ex. Madonna, Cher, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, and the list goes on.

Living without you is an adjustment for Jubal.

She knows it’s an assignment, not a breakup. She can see that he’s hurting right now, trying to keep the pieces of his life together by sheer force of will.

“How are you holding up?” She asks him, sitting down in one of the patio chairs that her husband Alan bought for the back yard. Jubal’s eyes remain fixed on the kids, the two of them chasing each other with bubble wands.

Jubal shrugs his shoulders in response to Sam’s question.

“Some days are better than others.” He says quietly, his hands slipping into the pockets of his jacket. “I keep wondering how she’s doing, if she’s being safe.”

It’s ridiculous to think like that, he knows it. You’re a decorated FBI agent with years of UC experience under your belt, and the thing is, you’re good, really good.

The first time he’d met you, he’d been trying to purchase several cases of assault rifles and you had been the one arranging the buy. At the time he remembered thinking it was somewhat refreshing to meet a female arms dealer.

Nikki Delphino, you had introduced yourself, when he handed over the cash.

He’d looked you up after the arrest. Daniel Moreno’s partner in crime. The guy had put a bullet in two federal agents who had been escorting the original shipment before it was hijacked. His plan had been to flip you, to leverage the charges, the relationship, whatever else he could so they could get their hands on Moreno. The two of you had sat across from each other in that interview room for hours, he went at you with everything he had but you, you were something else. Evasive, cold, and if he was honest, a bit of a smartass. It was infuriating.

It wasn’t until your handler made an appearance that they realised you were one of them. His frustration had turned to respect because game recognises game, and you, you didn’t fucking flinch.

An agreement was struck after that. You would catch up with Moreno, try and lobby a confession about the murders. It was dicey, they weren’t sure if news of your arrest had hit yet. Jubal admired your dedication, when you saw the mess that Moreno had left behind at the site of the hijacking, you’d been eager to help.

They watched it play out over a camera affixed to the necklace you were wearing. It was a lesson in manipulation, something they could use at the academy. You used your sex appeal to draw out the details, teasing, cajoling, pouting until he told you exactly what you wanted to know.

“I never asked…” Jubal had said after the arrest. “What’s your real name?”

“Stefani.” You tell him, the left side of your mouth tipping up into a smile. “Stefani Romano.”

“Welcome back Stefani.” He says holding out his hand to shake yours.

“You have no idea how good it is to hear someone actually use my real name.” You tell him as you clasp his hand. There’s a spark, one that he feels the instant the two of you touch. He doesn’t know it in that moment, but his life has just changed dramatically.

“She’s got grit.” Dana says when the two of them are sitting in her office at the end of the day. “I like her.”

“Yea.” Jubal remembers saying as Dana signs off on the transfer paperwork. “I like her too.”

“You’re not used to the shoe being on the other foot.” Sam remarks, drawing him out of this reverie. “Being the one that’s left behind. You’re used to being in control, knowing everything.”

“Yea, there’s probably something in that.” He says, his eyebrows furrowing into a frown as he considers Sam’s words.

Part of the problem is that he’s out of the loop and he hates that. He’s used to having the information at his fingertips but right now he’s in the dark and that’s a shitty place to be.

“I could say it gets easier…” Sam tells him before shaking her head. “But it doesn’t.”

“And I have a new appreciation for some of the stuff I put you through.” Jubal tells her, rubbing his hands over his features. “I guess I just didn’t realise it would be this hard.”

“You gotta have faith.” Sam says quietly, squeezing his arm lightly. “In yourself, in her. Trust that she will do anything to come back to you. That’s how I used to get through it, no matter what happened, I knew you’d do everything possible to get back to me and the kids.”

“Yea.” He says, his gaze straying back towards Tyler as he tries to pop the bubbles that Amelia blows in his direction. “Yea, you’re right.”

Chambord Album Review

Chambord is the debut album from the Montreal born and raised Canadienne alternative pop singer-songwriter FEVERS. She’s very inspired by Lana Del Rey, Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Melanie Martinez, and MARINA.

The record opens with the C Minor track Majesty, a song with lyrics about FEVERS’ experience with compulsory heterosexuality (also known as comphet), using royalty and all of its beurocracies with dating boys as a lesbian. “I ain’t your Majesty” is a straight up refusal of comphet as a whole, the production is intense & the synths are appropriate for lyrics about the loss of her innocence (“dragging my youth straight to the end”) and the moments she did give into comphet for the sake of male approval (“falling out the car for champange and caviar”).

The C# Minor Fille Du Roi (English translation: The King’s Daughter) is a song where FEVERS sings lyrics about this rich woman and laments how the high life’s bringing her down with all of its glamour and loneliness, with the line “If I had the money, I’d trade it for a good life” as the start of the chorus where FEVERS says that she’s more interested in living the good life than the high life. These lyrics could also be a metaphor for comphet (like the opener) because we hear her sing “Comme la fille du roi” (translation: like the king’s daughter) which would mean that she was born into royalty (again, a metaphor for comphet) and “Would trade what she got in a heartbeat, but I’d do the same so why don’t we”, which could be interpreted as an invitation to this woman to date FEVERS instead of seeking male validation.

A Thousand Men pulls out all the stops with its sonically pop production. The lyrics of this track see FEVERS running away from all of the predatory men that chase after her. She stays “Stone cold ’til the end”, as she puts it in the chorus. I could see this getting more radio airplay on my local pop radio stations if they ever wanted to play more Canadian Content like her (that is, if the radio stations ever do discover her, which I don’t know if they ever will due to how obscure she is right now!).

Lost and Found is a song with lyrics about sapphic love. This track has very pretty production all throughout, with a moody Eb Major beat and lyrics about FEVERS wanting to commit to a sapphic relationship that comes from a strong foundation of friendship, with lines like “I’m lonely but just for you”.

Candy Confections is the least streamed track from this album on Spotify, and I can see how it’s not the most interesting, as the beat is a little boring. If FEVERS does perform this track live, maybe it’ll grow on me (once I get to see FEVERS live one of these days). While it does make a good point concerning people and their nosiness into other people’s lives, it serves as a stark reminder that people do this more often than these (usually) celebrities are comfortable with. The best part of this track is definitely the lyrics and the point that they serve.

Mirror is a track that’s also about comphet. This track lyrically is more of a conversation that FEVERS has with her own mirror, telling her to compare herself against other women, compete with other women, center herself around men, and all of that jazz. This is the most played track from this album on Spotify, and I can see how it would be that way with its moody trap production. It also sounds like it could be played on the radio, much like A Thousand Men a few tracks ago (again, I wish that FEVERS weren’t so obscure!).

French Vanilla is also a song with lyrics about sapphic love, but with a twist. There’s a man who has eyes on this woman FEVERS is singing about. FEVERS has this delusion of grandeur that this woman would die for her, and she doesn’t “want to share [her] heart like it’s a fucking dessert”. At the end, FEVERS is tired of all the hurt from this woman sneaking behind her back and going out with this guy, and FEVERS’ ego collapses as she realizes that they have to go their separate ways. The listener may interpret this as biphobic, but I personally think that the situation as a whole is just toxic.

White Horse has these lyrics about FEVERS getting good karma and getting away from these people who’ve been trying to bring her down for whatever reasons. This beat has a bit more of a boom bap feel to it as opposed to the rest of the album’s equally moody vibes.

The record closes with Chambord, a song with lyrics that are once again (like the opener Majesty) about comphet. The lyrics look at corruption of the the heteronormative dating world from the point of view of a lesbian who once engaged in comphet. This is in the time signature of 6/8, which is a switch-up from the rest of her discography being in 4/4.

Overall, this album is a very moody masterclass in how to write about compulsory heterosexuality, moody introspections of the self and the outside world, and sapphic love. I give this album a strong eight/light nine out of ten! I’m excited for FEVERS’ future work and will make sure that I can attend one of her shows in the future (and maybe hear Candy Confections live).
