Rewatching Babylon Berlin

That thing with Jänicke - ugh that one really hurts :( He’s so sweet and kind. And Lotte was breaking my heart in this one too - she can’t keep up the facade of being totally hardnosed and resilient with Jänicke‘s family because they’re being so kind to her and it’s such a contrast to her own family. SNIFF!! For an episode that started off so adorably with the little dream dance, the final 20 minutes are just emotionally devastating.

Man, I totally would ship Stefan/Lotte because Gereon, for all that he may actually be the most beautiful man in Berlin, is a hot mess of dysfunctional family relationships, guilt, shame, and morphine addiction, while Stefan is an uncomplicated good person whose family is wonderfully warm and kind. Gereon is Lotte’s homme fatale - she can’t stay away but her association with him brings her to the brink of death and is richly endowed with heartbreak; Stefan is the pure-hearted ingenue.

And that got me to marvel once again at Babylon Berlin’s sly subversions - we’re unfortunately beyond used to the fictional deaths of young women driving the hero’s angst and motivating him, but B.B. turns that trope on its head: Stefan’s death is there to provide angst for LOTTE, not for Gereon, and drives Lotte’s plot (had she not been so grief-stricken and desolate, she wouldn’t have accepted Fuchs’s invitation for a drink); Stefan’s death of course also drives Lotte closer to Gereon, who comforts her in her guilt and causes her to have to re-examine her weird relationship with Wolter. (Of course Gereon is not untouched by Stefan’s death but it doesn’t hit him as personally as it does Lotte.)

Katelbach platzt am Sonntagmorgen in Gereons Zimmer, um von ihm Näheres über den angeblich von den Kommunisten angeschossenen Wachtmeister zu erfahren. Elisabeth Behnke versteckt sich unter der Bettdecke. – Stefan Jänicke nimmt Charlotte und Greta an den Wannsee in den Ruderclub mit, wo sich auch Rudi, ein Student der Kriminalpathologie, aufhält. Stefan stellt unter Beweis, dass er auch auf große Entfernung von den Lippen ablesen kann, weil seine Eltern taub sind. Zwei junge Männer von außerhalb, die sich als Fritz Höckert und Otto Wollenberg vorstellen, rudern mit Greta in einem gekaperten Boot zu einer Insel. – Gereon geht in einen katholischen Gottesdienst, bei dem Benda die Orgel spielt. Danach wird er zum Beichten aufgefordert und gesteht dem Beichtvater, dass er Helga liebt und seit mehr als zehn Jahren ein Verhältnis mit ihr hat. Bei einer anschließenden Einladung bei Benda lernt Gereon den Polizeipräsidenten Zörgiebel kennen, der ihn an das für ihn wichtige Protokoll zum Einsatz am 1. Mai erinnert und ihm sagt, wie die Rolle der Polizei darzustellen sei; Gereon fasst später sein Protokoll wahrheitswidrig dementsprechend ab. – Auf dem Stammsitz der Familie Nyssen findet als Übung für die „Operation Prangertag“ im Beisein von Generalmajor Seegers ein von Oberst Wendt organisiertes Manöver mit 4000 Mann statt. Seegers stellt klar, dass Nyssen die Verantwortung dafür trage, dass kein Aufsehen um den Zug entstehe. – Gereon bittet Wolter um Hilfe bei der Suche nach Krajewski. Die beiden Polizisten stecken ihn in eine Zelle und machen klar, dass er keine Drogen bekommt, bevor er redet. Dabei gibt Wolter zu erkennen, dass er weiß, dass Gereon wie Krajewski ein „Zitterer“, ein Mensch mit posttraumatischer Belastungsstörung, ist. – Der Armenier dringt mit seinen Leuten in den Anhalter Bahnhof ein, damit Kardakow beweisen kann, dass in einem Waggon Gold ist. Doch beim Öffnen strömt Giftgas aus. Während Kardakow entkommt, stirbt der Lokführer des Zuges. Seine Leiche wird in die Pathologie der Burg gebracht. Dort sind Charlotte und Rudi dabei, durch eine Obduktion Näheres über die Todesumstände des am Vortag eingelieferten Russen herauszufinden. Aus dem Zustand der Lunge schließen die beiden, dass er Eisenbahner war. Sie verstecken sich, als die Leiche aus dem Anhalter Bahnhof gebracht wird. Der Pathologe Dr. Schwarz kommentiert, dass Giftgas die Todesursache sei. – Kardakow wird vom Armenier zu Dr. Schmidt gebracht und dort behandelt. Für einen Vortrag von Dr. Schmidt versammelt sich eine große Menge von Kriegsveteranen.

In celebration of finally starting THE THIRD SEASON OF BABYLON BERLIN in maybe T minus 1 hour with some pals and some spätzle, wilding and posting three previously Patreon-exclusive (back from when I had a Patreon) teeny tiny speculative fictions I wrote last year, which I’d called

WHAT I CAN BELIEVE: Imaginings

Can't believe that I’ve spent the last six years waiting for this series, and then it showed up and had everything, plus what I didn’t even know to ask for.

But, also can't believe that I never got to actually see Tinker Tailor Weimar Spy, August Benda the perfect George Smiley to Stefan Jänicke’s oh-no Jim Prideaux, quiet coffee in Benda’s office as he’s saying “You know I would not ask this of you unless there was great need” and Stefan’s nodding “Of course sir” as it rains, it’s the first scene where it rains, so that everything smells of damp wool and smoke and the porcelain of a cup held like it shelters a secret. “And there’s also someone coming,” Benda will tell him, “a Rath from Cologne. We’ll need to know…the shade of his feathers.” And Detective Jänicke loves Councillor Benda, his calm and his heart, how he directs by saying just a few words well, and he’ll do anything for him, not knowing that eventually this will lead in a direct line to the Inspector from Cologne feeling like he’ll do anything to right what was done to Stefan Jänicke, while Benda’s heart breaks over them both. But right now, the boy is returning to his office, notebook, cap, and saying, “I think he’s like me,” and Benda already knows all he means, while Jänicke yet does not.

And I can’t believe that it’s so hokey but listen, in Weimar Heaven there’s a dance hall where confetti falls slowly, forever, yet the floor never gets filled. And when Charlotte arrives soaking wet, Stefan says “What?” and “Charlotte, no you need to go back.” She's exclaiming happily and starting forward but he’s gently holding out his hands like he’s going to place his palms against her shoulders, insisting “No, go back to Gereon,” and he’s still so kind and his hands still aren't touching her but Charlotte feels a soft push all the same and “Stefan, I found your—” she tries to tell him but his face is slipping away as she falls back into the dark, and her heart clenches, and she coughs and coughs and coughs. And Gereon, Gereon whose hands always returned to her through the water, gathers her into his wet arms and exhales into the back of her bedraggled hair like his own lungs can empty now, and Charlotte laying winded across his lap has this feeling like she could fall asleep on top of him, that they’d sleep perfectly in sync, the rhythm of their breathing always the same now.

Anyway can’t wait for next season when after the great & sordid familial upending, self-medicating Gereon Rath makes a break for self-destruction, knocks down a terrifying amount of Dr. Schmidt’s Cure For What Ails Ya (barbiturates + heroin), and drops off into a Shame-style bender with ALL the party girls and boys of Berlin, until Charlotte runs into him at Moka Efti and is like “Gereon!” and he’s like “??!``~?” And she takes him stumbling off the floor and into the rooms below and the Widow holds her with an “Ah-ah--is he paying?” and Lotte smiles “Ja” and fishes his money out of his pocket while she chuckles “Suits me, girl," and Lotte plomps him on a bed and tells this half-conscious wreckage to just stay put a moment, and that is how Edgar comes across Charlotte Ritter rummaging through his restaurant kitchen at god knows what hour of the waning Republic, looking for snacks to feed a strung out Gereon Rath who hasn’t eaten since he knew what day it was. And in turn how Gereon opens his eyes a bit clearer than he has in about 12 hours to see the inscrutable local crime lord giving him a disapproving look over a plate of eggs & tomato and saying “Eat. Do what she says,” and Gereon turns his head, mouth falling open quizzically, as Charlotte stuffs in a piece of lavash.
