Ceramic vs Steel Knives

People ask me all the time: “What kind of knives should I get for home cooking?” When we’re just getting started in the kitchen, we tend to simply use what we have around, or what someone else gives us. This could be a halfway decent set of knives, or it could be a second-hand, flimsy knife set with cheap plastic handles.

People tell stories about you.”

“They tell plenty of stories about you too.”

She let out a soft, almost silent snort. “I didn’t sail to the South Pole and help bring back the Avatar. I never went to the great Earth Kingdom forests to build a boat to carry myself back to the Fire Nation and while I was there tamed a wild man.”

“Jet isn’t wild,” Zuko said flatly. “He’s just a jerk.”

“And yet he’s your second in command,” she observed dryly. “Face it, Zuko, you’re becoming a legend, if you’re not one already.”

This was one of those, “Did anybody catch this reference, because I’m being unbearably clever, please tell me how clever I am!” moments, and high on the list of the “I’m pompous and should not be allowed,” moments. Guess who Zuko and Jet are here. Guess.

Yep, they’re Gilgamesh and Enkidu.

But there is an actual purpose to this passage other than my reference to the Epic of Gilgamesh, and there’s a purpose to my reference. The first was to imply for the audience, and also for Zuko that becoming and being chief was very hard on Mai, and that she was always fearful. Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown for Mai. She took the chiefdom after Ozai and Azula were killed and held it by sheer force of personality. She’s here seeking safety and stability for her clan, herself, and her rule. She’s seeking permanence.

She’s also looking beyond her own rule. Now that the Avatar is back, she knows that they can build a real nation again, and a dynasty that will continue after her, and to do that, they need an origin myth. Zuko sees what he’s done as just the things that happened to him, while Mai sees them as a legend that people will tell after him, perfect for the first Firelord of a reborn Fire Nation. She sees that someday there will be stories about Zuko like there are in our world about Gilgamesh.

I’m also trying to imply that this is a period of history that will someday become mythologized, and that long after the truth of who Zuko, Mai, Jet, Ty Lee, and Iroh are and what they did are forgotten, their legends will live on.
