NFL WildCard Weekend 2025 Preview

I'm going to open this year's round of playoff previews the same way I do every year, and that's by applauding the NFL on creating the most addictive sports television product on earth.

I don't love the fact that Americans voted for Trump over Harris. I don't love some of the staunch capitalist ideals espoused by some Americans, but I don't blame Americans for being addicted to the National Football League, because this s##t is CRACK.

Now let's do it.

Los Angeles Chargers vs Houston Texans

I like CJ Stroud, but if ever there were a time to pick the road underdog, this was it.

The Texans literally only made the playoffs because they are in the awful AFC South, meanwhile the Chargers fought through the most competitive AFC West in years.

The Texans have had blowout losses to both the Vikings and the Ravens, managing to score just 2 points against the Ravens.

The Chargers have been dependable this season, Justing Herbert is 9th in yards per game, the team is tied for 3rd place in turnover differential, but they average just 110 rushing yards per game on the ground, so that's something to worry about.

While I like the Chargers as an underdog, please understand, this pick turns to trash if the Texans score 24 or more points, because the Chargers have averaged a paltry 23 points per game as a team, more than doable when you got a QB like CJ Stroud.

Prediction: Los Angeles Chargers Win 24-17

2. Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens

I want to open this game preview by proclaiming that Lamar Jackson is the GOAT, whether the Ravens win or lose this game is immaterial and so is whether he wins MVP or not. This Ravens team comes and goes with Lamar, and Lamar is legendary.

The Steelers on the other hand, are limping in to this post season after starting the season 10-3 and then losing 4 in a row.

This Steelers team has no juice on offense. They did the right thing when they started Russel Wilson over Justin Fields, but they cannot move the chains, and George Pickens looks like crashing out in an interview, then proceeded to drop 6 passes against the Bengals in week 18.

At the start of the season the belief was that the Steelers owned Lamar and the Ravens, a belief that seemed to be validated by the Steelers 18-16 win in week 11.

Since then, the Steelers are 2-5, and among those losses, a 34-17 blowout to the Ravens in week 16.

The Ravens have led the league in yards per game on offense all season. Far and away the best offense in the NFL this year and built on the foundation of the number 1 run game in the NFL.

The Raven defense was shaky at the start of the season, but since then they have been more than respectable, and the key to this is how good they've gotten at stopping the run, and they're allowing just 80 rushing yards per game.

Prediction: Baltimore Ravens Win 27-17

3. Denver Broncos vs Buffalo Bills

I expect the Bills to comfortably advance to the next round, but what I want this to be statement game from Josh Allen.

All year people have insinuated that he should be league MVP over Lamar and Saquon, and I want Josh Allen to show out and have a career game to really prove it.

Just as well because as much as the Bills will be favored, the Broncos have more total sacks than any team in the league and are 7th best defense in total yards per game, but the pass defense has not been on the level of their 3rd best in the league run defense, and that's why Josh Allen and his receivers need to have a big game.

As good as that may be, the Bills defense leads the league in takeaways this year, and that's enough to make me think the Bills will win out against a young QB in Bo Nix who is somewhat prone to turnovers, with 12 in the regular season.

The Broncos are also the 4th best team in punt returns and a big special teams play will go a long way in helping them out, but the needs to be the Josh Allen party, he's the guy with a point to prove.

Prediction: Buffalo Bills Win 34-20

4. Green Bay Packers vs Philadelphia Eagles

The Eagles are kind of unlucky here to finish with 13 wins in the regular season, and then still have to open the post season against a very competitive, 11-6 Green Bay Packer team, albeit at home.

No matter though, this Eagles team may be the most complete Eagles team in years.

The Eagles defense has been incredible all year, holding teams to around 17 points per game, they rank top 8 in run defense and number 1 in pass defense.

What makes this game so tricky, is that you have two teams that have been really good running the football this year. Green Bay rank number 5 in rushing yards per game, bettered slightly by the Eagles who are number 2 in rushing league-wide.

Amother thing for Philly to worry about is QB Jalen Hurts and the head injury that saw him leave the game against the Commanders in week 16. I do expect that he'll play.

At some point, if Green Bay are going to win, it's going to come down to Jordan Love making big throws. His longest pass this season is a 75 yarder but more importantly, his 61% completion percentage, while being 19th in total pass attempts, indicates that Love needs to step up big to pull off the upset.

Further complicating matter for the Eagles, is that the Packers are top 5 in total defense and they're allowing less than 100 rushing yards per game on defense. Thier pass defense though is a little more leaky, where they allow 215 yards per game through the air.

Small foot note, the Packers average the least punt return yards of any team in the league, so there's that.

Prediction: Philadelphia Eagles win 26-21

5. Washington Commanders vs Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Tampa Bay are 3rd in total yards this season.

I don't quite know how to feel about that other than that they may be the most dangerous team in one of the worst divisions in the league.

I fully expect this one to be a shootout, with both teams putting up a minimum of 28 points/4 td's each.

You know I love my black quarterbacks, so I'm obviously picking Jayden Daniels' team to go to the next round but Baker Mayfield will be feeling "dangerous" and rightly so because Tampa's offense has been their catalyst this season

While Tampa are elite at stopping the run, they are not so great at stopping the pass , and that might mean a big day for Jayden Daniels and he has the 7th highest completion percentage in the regular season, with Baker slightly better with 71% in 3rd place.

Should be a good one with lots of fireworks.

Prediction: Washington Commanders win 36-33

6. Minnesota Viking vs Los Angeles Rams

Very similar to the Eagles in how the Vikings have to play a very dangerous Rams team after the finishing the season with 14 wins.

There's a lot I don't love about the LA Rams in 2024/25.

Kyren Williams has almost 1,300 rushing yards, and Puka Nucua is close to 1000 receiving yards, but Mathew Stafford's 8 interceptions to 20 touchdown ratio is cause for concern, and the fact that they average 21.6 points per game this season, indicates an offense that is less potent than what the Rams have been in the past.

Minnesota on the other hand, started the season being touted among the top defenses in the league, and while they're still elite at stopping the run, their pass defense is among the worst in the league, giving up 242 yards per game through the air.

That lends itself to making this a shootout, given Rams are only slightly better in this regard, giving up 223 yards per game through the air.

Another stat that I think matter is Sam Darnold has been sacked 48 times this season, and in comparison, Matt Stafford has only been sacked 22 times.

Look, my heart really wants to pick the Vikings to win here, but a combination of playoff history, this being Sam Darnold's first playoff game as a starter and the Rams recent upswing, makes me think that this is a pick I'd rather root against than to be wrong about.

Prediction: Los Angeles Rams win 24-20

10/27 1:00 game slate

Just to start things off, todays early game slate may have been the most entertaining 1 o'clock slate of the season so far with 6-8 games being decided by one score (8-6 points or less). Now the other 2 games... were blow outs but we will get to that. We also had 3 divisional games today.

Eagles vs. Bengals was the battle of the indentical twins, Chase and Sydney Brown and Sydney and his Eagles overpowered the Bengals in a 37-17 win.

We had an AFC North divisional matchup today between the Browns, who lost their starting quarterback last week in Deshawn Watson, but who may have found their new one in Jameis Winston, and the reigning 2023 MVP Lamar Jackson and the Ravens. In a shocking final score the bottom of the division Browns beat the not anymore top of the division Ravens 29-24.

The Lions, whose quarterback Jared Goff who continues to have another week where he throws less incompletions than the team had touchdowns, absolutely rolled over a struggling Titans team who just traded away their best reciever for pretty much a bag of chips and a high-five (a 5th round pick that can become a 4th) the the 6-0 Chiefs out of all teams. The final was 52-14.

The Cardinals beat the Dolphins on Tua's welcome back from his concussion on a 1 second left game winning field goal 28-27.

The Jets' Aaron Rodgers and long time reciever Davante Adams still can not do enough to pull off a win and they lose to the Patriots 25-22 who lost their starting rookie quaterback during the game due to a hand injury.

In an NFC South divisional game the Falcons defeated the Buccaneers 31-26 being carried on the backs of the Falcons runningback, Bijan Robinson, tight end Kyle Pitts and reciever Darnell Mooney who combined for a total of 63 rushing yards (just Bijan), 220 recieveing yards and 4 touchdowns.

The Packers faced the Jaguars in the Jaguars first game in America since the 6th of Octobor. The Packers ultimately won in a last second field goal. Final 30-27.

In the last divisonal matchup of the 1 o'clock games the AFC South's Colts faced the Texans. Colts quarterback is still struggling and only completed 10 of his 32 passing attemps today while accumulting for 175 yards. 4 of those completions where to Josh Downs who had 109 yards and a touchdown but it still wasnt enough. The Colts were defeated 20-23

Now to the best team in the AFC North, the one and only Pittsburgh Steelers. We play prime time tomorrow at the beautiful Acrisure Stadium against the Giants (💩) at 8:15 to end off week 8 and it should be an easy win. Anyways... it's always HERE WE GO and GO STEELERS!!

Divisional round: Jan. 20 and 21

(7) Green Bay Packers at (1) San Francisco 49ers

Quite the surprise in Wild Card Weekend with Green Bay just demolishing the Dallas Cowboys and moving on to San Francisco. Jordan Love went 16 for 21 for 272 yards and 3 TDs in his playoff debut AND has thrown 21 TD’s and 1 INT in his last 9 games. Safe to say he is playing at a high level. San Francisco is coming off a bye week and gets their taste of playoff action for the first time this season. It’s no secret the 49ers have a tremendous offense. Christian McCaffrey should be MVP in my opinion but the 49ers are a sneaky good team that on the surface it looks like the offense runs through CMC, but it doesn’t. it’s blocking, route running and scheme. Brock Purdy can sling it and with a ‘Swiss army knife’ in Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk on the outside there are plenty of options for Purdy to distribute to. Oh, and George Kittle helps too. But the key for the Packers is Aaron Jones. Jones has rushed for more than 110 yards in each of the past four games. He ran for 118 yards and 3 TD’s against the Cowboys. Jones has rushed for more than 100 yards every time he’s faced the Cowboys in his career but he’s never rushed for 100 yards in six previous meetings against San Francisco. In the 2021 Divisional Playoff loss to the 49ers he had 9 catches for 129 yards and 12 carries for 41 yards. I think San Francisco wins but not by the -9.5 point spread Vegas is predicting. Packers are hot but they lose a heart breaker.

(4) Tampa Bay Buccaneers at (3) Detroit Lions

Sunday, 3 p.m. ET on NBC

Who would’ve thought Detroit, who hasn’t won a playoff game in 32 years would be hosting TWO playoff games in a season. What a wild ride it has been for the motor city this season. Jared Goff got his revenge against the LA Rams and is moving on to face the Baker Mayfield led Buccaneers. Lions DB CJ Gardner-Johnson is talking about how if Tampa had a better QB they’d be better. So bulletin board material before the biggest game in recent Lions history. No big deal. The Bucs took down a flawed Eagles team with blitzing the hell out of them. No AJ Brown, Jalen Hurts was hurt and ineffective, and there was no defensive help which led to this solid Bucs team advancing. Detroit is riding high and rightfully so, Detroit has two home games in the same playoffs for the first time in franchise history. Detroit hasn’t won 2 playoff games in a season since winning the 1957 NFL title! Be energetic, be excited, BUT this Buccaneer team is NOT to be overlooked. The defense is solid, Baker Mayfield is having a good season and is distributing the ball to his playmakers. Tampa isn’t flashy but they don’t have to be. The atmosphere in Detroit will be electric and I think Detroit gets the win but Tampa keeps it close.

(4) Houston Texans at (1) Baltimore Ravens

Saturday, 4:30 p.m. ET on ESPN/ABC/ESPN+

For some reason I feel that the rest vs. rust debate has to apply to the Ravens but not the 49ers, and I don’t really know why. Baltimore rested key guys against the Steelers the final week of the regular season and had a bye week. Guys got rest and more time to get healthy, but I can’t shake the feeling the Ravens will take a drive or two to shake the rust off. These teams meet for the second time this season, they played week 1 where Jackson threw an early INT, each QB had a fumble, Stroud took 5 sacks and Jackson took 4 sacks. It was a sloppy loss for Stroud but it’s safe to say each team rebounded nicely. Houston took it to Cleveland scoring at will on the best scoring defense in football. So why not try it with 6th ranked scoring defense in Baltimore. It’ll be 28 degrees in Baltimore so we’ll see how Houston handles the cold. CJ Stroud is exciting but Lamar Jackson is gunning for his 2nd MVP which he would have earned for sure. Baltimore hasn't hosted an AFC title game since January of 1971, when the Colts beat the Oakland Raiders. The Texans have never made it that far. They are 0-4 in the divisional round, including a loss to Baltimore in January of 2012. The Houston Oilers played in the AFC championship game, but their last appearance was 44 years ago. I think Houston will put up a good fight and I want the Cinderella story to continue in the worst way but I think Baltimore escapes this game with a win.

(3) Kansas City Chiefs at (2) Buffalo Bills

Sunday, 6:30 p.m. ET on CBS

This is it. This is the measuring stick. THIS IS THE GAME! This is to prove to everyone you are for real Buffalo. The playoff losses to KC have always been IN Kansas City. But now you get Patrick Mahomes at home. You get him playing his first road playoff game ever. I cannot overstate how immensely huge this game is for Josh Allen and Sean McDermott. Buffalo needs to get some key guys back especially on defense. Rasul Douglas needs to play and so does Taron Johnson for the secondary to have some confidence in covering Travis Kelce and Rashee Rice. Isiah Pacheco didn’t play in the first meeting of these teams this season and the Bills need to clamp down on the run to keep Mahomes in long down and distances. The Chiefs are converting 52% of red-zone trips into touchdowns this season, which is in the bottom half of the league. Against Miami, the Chiefs went 2 for 6 and settled for four field goals. Keep everything in front of you. Stop the run. Force Mahomes into long down and distances and the Bills win. I think the Bills win but it’ll be so much closer than I want it to be. This is also a game I will be in attendance for so I’m sure my wife will enjoy my emotional mood swings for 3 hours.

Sure, the Steelers have all but collapsed, the Bengals are winless, and the Ravens have nosedived after an impressive 2-0 start (with one loss coming at the hands of Baker and the Browns), but the Browns know this might be one loss they can’t come back from.
