Hannah creates simple relocatable vertical arbours for climbing plants. Climbing plants are useful in the garden to make the most of vertical space.
Hannah gets growing on some simple, relocatable growing structures, using concrete reinforcing mesh - known as reo. This steel product can be joined, bent, cut or attached for all kinds of situations and uses.
It comes in a range of sizes and thicknesses but, if cutting, you need some personal protection equipment such as safety glasses, gloves and ear muffs.
To create an arch you need a solid base - Hannah uses star pickets hammered in deeply, placing one in each corner of her new arbour. Because she’s working between terraces, she puts the upper pickets in at an angle to provide more support for her structure.
Hannah uses a thicker mesh with a 9mm bar for stability; the length will depend on how high you want your arch. Hannah recommends a minimum height of 180cm for an arbour; because her family is tall she will go higher - to 2.4m.
For heavy-duty reo it can be hard to bend sheets on your own so get a friend to help.
Secure the mesh to the star pickets with wire; Hannah cuts pieces about 40cm long.
The finished arches are very functional and can support grapes, beans, peas, heavy pumpkins or ornamental climbers such as a climbing rose.
Hannah plants a mixture of deciduous grapes and evergreen native climbers.

I’ve always felt compelled by forests and the ocean. I’ve got the ocean in my blood. I get it from my father, and he got it from his father, and so on. I need to be around nature and to feel it near me. It’s difficult to articulate except to say that it feels right. We, and especially not myself, weren’t made for dense cities, towering structures of concrete and steel, and screens with the world at our fingertips. We were meant to set foot out in the world and explore it for ourselves. Our experiences were meant to be unique and something beautiful. Technology has robbed us of so much. We’re all living these lives that once upon a time would’ve been seen as nothing more than being on life support. These devices in our hand are veritable shackles, they’re merely circuitry, instead of just iron or steel. The water lulls me to sleep on nights where the breeze is stiff. The winter winds roar up from Antarctica and then slice through everything like razors. Victoria is a state always on the verge of being torn to shreds by the frigid southern gales. I think about how the colonists, settlers, and prisoners sailed to Tasmania in the beginning of the 19th Century and how difficult it would’ve been to cross the Bass Strait back then. Those wide open and roiling waters of the Tasman Sea, the howling winds, and Mother Nature trying her damnedest to sink those lonely wooden vessels with towering waves and the might of Gods. Many perished in the numerous crossings. Countless souls now at the bottom of the sea, resting on sand and silt as old as the earth itself. The bones of those sailors and prisoners, both brave in their own right, surrounded by the wreckage of man, men who tried to triumph and seize glory from the impartial hands of Mother Nature and the Gods. Braver than divinity in the face of such insurmountable odds.

SUNDAY EXTRA: Goods Train Derailment (1999)
On Saturday 9th January 1999, No. 36 goods traveling north from Hobart to Burnie in the Australian State of Tasmania, derailed at Chigwell in Hobart's northern suburbs. The derailment was apparently caused by a track buckle in a timber-sleepered section that had been replaced by steel sleepers earlier that week. The wobbly track seen towards the end was straight before the train ran over it - except for a slight track buckle/kink that was probably caused by heat (January is high summer in Australia). Although the actual derailment isn't seen, it's graphically heard at (2:50) and (2:56) when bogies from a loaded wagon (blue containers) jump the track and leave a trail of track devastation for about a kilometre. The loco. crew didn't realise until a witness contacted Train Control which in turn contacted them. By the time the train stopped at Austins Ferry, 9 wagons had come off the track. The locomotives are four English-Electric diesel-electric locomotives built in Queensland for use in Tasmania in the early 1970s (2118 -ex ZA6, 2111 -ex Z2 "Bell Bay Pioneer", 2110 -ex Z1 "Northern Progress," & 2112 -ex Z 3). They did not come off the track.

About Mount Wellington
Nestled in the southeast of Tasmania, Australia, Mount Wellington is a sight to behold. With a peak height of 1,271 metres above sea level, this mountain is a frequent recipient of snowfall, even during the summertime. Its lower slopes are shrouded in lush green forests, complete with crisscrossing walking trails and a few fire trails. But even if hiking isn’t your forte, that’s no problem! The mountain also boasts a sealed narrow road leading to the summit – a journey of about 22 kilometres from Hobart’s central business district. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with panoramic views of Hobart, the Derwent estuary, and glimpses of the World Heritage Area nearly 100 kilometres away. Don’t miss out on noticing the cliff of dolerite columns known as the Organ Pipes – it’s a distinctive feature of Mount Wellington, after all.
Mount Wellington is an important site for broadcasting in Hobart and its surrounding areas, thanks to its location providing line-of-sight transmission. Back in 1960, two steel lattice towers were erected to deliver television services to Tasmania. These included the Post Master General tower, which stood 104m tall, and another tower owned by WIN Corporation, which remains to this day. The PMG tower faced difficulties with snow and ice, which led to a radome being installed in 1982 to protect the antennas. However, planning for a higher-quality tower began later on in the decade, culminating in the construction of the new concrete and steel Broadcast Australia tower in the mid-90s. This led to the PMG tower being demolished to make way for the new structure. Today, Mount Wellington continues to play a crucial role in the transmission of television and radio signals across Tasmania.
