Plans were made to interrupt the regularity of sunrise
Steel cable was stretched out through space and anchored in the stone hide of the Moon
A creature of unimaginable bigness and power would grasp the free end of the cable and with a beastly grunt and a swift pivot on one foot sling the orb into the path of the sun

The Parable is SICK IT'S SICK IT'S SICK-
The cacophony is getting worse. The wreckage, the Parable eating itself and eating itself and eating it all. They need to escape but it's eating the very code around them, numbers fizzling into nothing and disappearing into the void within, it's eating those Narrators that thought themselves above it all, that thought themselves More.
Leigh's Narrator is the last to go, the last who fought to the bitter end while the others were shredded and used to feed the bottomless pit the broken Parable had become. Torn apart in a whirlwind of horrifying noises, of screams that will haunt their nightmares for months and in the sparse, calm moments thereafter. He pleads, begs for someone to save him, proclaims repentance and cries out his apologies to the world, to Leigh, but no one responds. No one moves to help, for it is all a lie borne to save his own skin, and they know he would do little more than drag anyone else who reach out back down with him into oblivion.
They watch as he, too, is devoured and reduced to nothing.
But it isn't enough. They had hoped the two of them, the most powerful two of the force that had done this, would be each other's end, would be the final tipping point that dispersed the sick and rotting code to nothing, but with the last of the fouled Narrators gone and Perry still there, they realize that it's not over. It's not over.
Static roars as the thing that was a Story, once, turns to them in it's own flavor of desperation, it's own cry of need of want of hunger keening out and rattling the walls of the office to its core. It turns to them in starts and fits and jerky movements, the screaming hunger hunger more more more dragging it close as they turn to run, to escape, fleeing like their very existences depend on it because they do.
They know, innately, in that way you know if you fall from a great height you'll die, that they will die. This will not work. They are not fast enough, not when dragging the injured Narrator between them, not enough, and Perry is hungry and gaining and quick.
It's Stan that realizes, Stan the clever, the always-ahead, Stan in a last desperate attempt to save the others that knows what he must do. Stan that throws the Narrator, his Narrator, ahead with the others and ignores his desperate scream and turns back. His thoughts are not ones of self-sacrifice, not of a death to save his friends- his thoughts are little more than buy time by any means, are mostly it needs to calm down it's too fast it's collapsing too fast, it's taking everything down with it and we need to get out from under before we're trapped and taken down with it, and if Stan knows one thing about calming things and people down, it's that-
You can always use a Bucket.
The Bucket is an enigma, created by the Narrator - all of them, some of them, most of them - to be a reassuring presence. It's - a joke, a cry for help, a sly innuendo, an earnest olive branch across the divide of pain and suffering - nothing more than a simple object, hard metal, galvanized steel slapped with a couple cheesy stickers, and yet its effect is real. It's indescribable, how this one asset manages what it does, but it's a load-bearing Bucket, it's the Reassurance Bucket, and they all know its effects intimately.
Stanley shoves the Narrator forward, slings his Bucket around and faces the wall of writhing static, of blurry limbs and grasping cables and all-white pixel-lag eyes. He faces what used to be a Narrator, a Story, a Parable, and as it rears back and bears down on him with nothing singing through its rotting code but EAT EAT EAT-
Stan shoves the Bucket down on its head as hard as he can.
It's like someone hits pause on a movie in the climactic final battle. Frozen in time, in place like a still frame of film, it simply stops… moving. The roaring, buzzing, hissing noises stop, the flickering lights and shedding static stops, it all just stops.
And they run.
As they run, as they make it to their escape, they feel the building tide of destruction looming over them like a tidal wave about to crest, like a tsunami rushing towards land. The Bucket put a stopper on the apocalypse, but the pressure still builds and builds, pushing towards an explosion even more catastrophic than the one that almost overwhelmed them.
But it is enough. Enough for them to escape, enough for them to flee, and when the Bucket eventually stops working its strange, reassuring magic on the broken tatters of the Parable, when the seal finally breaks and the thing that was once Something finally snaps and devours the rest of itself whole, they are long, long gone.
#warning for body horror in the image below the cut. glitchy toothy fucked up mess#its endgame perry babey!#repeat and write this story#reset the actors on stage#perry the parable#personal#my art#my writing#parable actors

Bixby Bridge, CA (No. 3)
Over 300,000 board feet (700 m3) of Douglas fir timber, used to build a 250-foot (76 m) high falsework to support the arch during construction, was transported from the railroad terminal in Monterey over the narrow, one-way road to the bridge site. The falsework, built by crews led by E. C. Panton, the general superintendent, and I. O. Jahlstrom, resident engineer of Ward Engineering Co., was difficult to raise, because it was constantly exposed to high winds. Some of the falsework timbers were 10 by 10 inches (250 mm × 250 mm).[18] It took two months to construct the falsework alone. When high waves threatened the falsework foundation, construction was halted for a short time until winter storms abated.
The crews excavated 4,700 cubic yards (3,600 m3) of earth and rock. Eight hundred and twenty-five trucks brought in 600,000 pounds of reinforcing steel. Sand and gravel were supplied from a plant in Big Sur.
Construction required 45,000 sacks or 6,600 cubic yards (5,000 m3) of cement which was transported from Davenport, near Santa Cruz, and from San Andreas. Crews began placing concrete on November 27. The concrete was transported across the canyon on platforms using slings suspended from a cable 300 feet (91 m) above the creek.
The bridge was completed on October 15, 1932, although the highway was not finished for another five years. At its completion, the bridge cost $199,861 and, at 360 feet (110 m), was the longest concrete arch span on the California State Highway System. The bridge was necessary to complete the two-lane road which opened in 1937 after 18 years of construction. The completion of construction was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Dr. John L.D. Roberts, who had conceived of the need for the road.

starter for @redhead-reporter
NEW YORK CITY , EARTH-1048.
The past few years had been less than ideal for Peter Parker, and if he was being brutally honest? That was putting it very generously... being the cause of his girlfriend’s death, betrayed by his best friend and subsequently having to lock him up in a high security prison; things were rough, it rattled the ideals he had once held so close when he first dawned the mask back when he was 17... a bitterness had consumed him, less pull being shown in his offense, it was truly a slippery slope indeed.
And to add to another troublesome development to the past few years of depression, the web-slinging hero woke up 3 days ago to find himself in a different plain of reality... an alternate universe, Guess the tingle doesn’t help you avoid unexpected universe hopping.
This new world was similar, yet different at the same time... there was no Lizard, no Green Goblin either; there was a man with robotic octopus tentacles and a dude dressed like a scorpion, so that was neat; there also was already a Spider-Man thwipping around the city... which certainly made things complicated when it came to being a hero of the “friendly neighborhood” variety.
Taking a scenic break atop a high rise building, the scribbles that acted as advanced physics calculations would be tossed aside upon feeling a chill crawl up his spine... his Spidey Sense was most certainly kicking in.
Sure enough, across the street he would spot a red-haired woman snapping photographs of the new development being constructed; Peter would also spot the loose steel beam that was dangling dangerously over the site.
SNAP!
It happened in an instant, the cable holding the mass of metal snapping like a popsicle stick; careening down to the sidewalk below.
“Step aside! OSHA coming through!” Peter was already mid-swing when he made the quippy declaration, agility and experience allowing him to close the distance at an alarmingly fast pace; wrapping an arm around the woman’s waist, he would hoist the two of them up into the air and back up to the roof he had previously been relaxing atop.
“Are you alright?” the masked man asks, before glancing back to see the site workers already resolving the damages; more importantly there had been zero casualties, prompting a sigh of relief to leave him.

How To Harness An Asteroid
By
Hill Bowman
Multiple Environment Biologic Exo-Shell.
How to harness an asteroid.
let say a kilometer long by half a kilometer wide.
…
Primary propulsion will be solar sail, secondary propulsion will be particle accelerator, emergency propulsion will be chemical rocket.
Obviously, the parts and equipment for the solar sail as well as primary components for particle accelerator plus heavy equipment guide rails, Arc furnace, oxy- acetylene, hydrogen oxygen welding tank (just to make life easy) must be brought with you.
Also guide rails, epoxy, adhesive, ressens, plastic rivets Carbon fiber tubing, all kinds of fasteners, must be brought with you.
The materials for the conventional rocket will be harvested from the core of the asteroid via traditional mining processes.
Your most critical tools for this project will be arc furnace, heavy drilling equipment, welding torch’s, explosives, front loader, back hoe, reinforced Crain slings ( to bag and move rubble).
Human necessities;
For crew of 12
1 year – food , water rations, inflatable warehouse shelter, full ship board surgical and general hospital set up.
2,000 wats of solar panels, 4 deep cycle marine batteries and of course all necessary peripheral like cables hook up, attachments etcetera.
The space vessel must attain synchronous trajectory with the surface of the asteroid. land and or tether to the asteroid.
…
Once accomplished crew must unload, anchor down guide rail’s and safety cables.
Use explosives front loader reinforced crane slings and back hoe to level a building pad.
Bag And remove rubble and deploy inflatable warehouse for crew and equipment.
For a multitude of reasons this must all be done within 12 standard earth hours after arrival and synchronization with the asteroid. Human safety in the project being priority One.
First.
solar equipment, arc furnace, smelting equipment, earth moving equipment, mining tools and explosives, crew must be deployed to level a building pad from which to begin heavy construction.
Once a building pad is leveled inflatable habitats are anchored down and deployed for equipment storage and temporary crew quarters.
Next:. Bolt down parallel tracks to circumnavigate width of asteroid. This will be the foundation for gravity ring .
Next:
lay down two parallel tracks that circumnavigate the length of the asteroid Along with guide cables along all tracks safety harness connect lines for crew and equipment.
The parallel track work is to provide work area along the length and width of the asteroid giving access for crew and equipment to core out the center of the asteroid down it’s length.
Next:
Coor the center of the asteroid down the length by approximately 20 meters in diameter. Something like coring an apple.
Next: Utilize all resources derived from the coring process through the center of the asteroid to produce steel rods and gutters and 1/16th sheet metal as well as fasteners.
Note.
In organic materials can be harvested from the asteroid, however organic materials such as adhesive polymers, carbon fiber, nylon rivets, and assorted fasteners as well as carbon fiber structural components must be carried with you to make the structure error tight. The mineral substances used in the process can be collected from the asteroid itself.
The Guide rails And safety cables your crew laid down in the beginning for the heavy equipment will also become the footing and tension cable’s for the tower assembly that will support a gravity ring. Ultimately, the gravity ring will be the habitat for crew, research, navigation and propulsion.
Ideally the propulsion system is hybrid.
There are multiple methods of propelling the vessel.
once it is fully assembled primary thrust being generated by solar sails. Secondary propulsion generated by particle acceleration. Finally with third backup propulsion being chemical thrust such as hydrogen - oxygen rocket thrust.
Note:
As I'm sure you're aware; hydrogen and oxygen are in abundance throughout know space (as well as nitrogen) from ice and raw mining slag from the boring process. Collected ice can be melted down into water and further divided in the hydrogen and oxygen HHO.
Raw mineral slag once harvested from the core of the asteroid can be crushed and melted down for steel, iron, copper, nickel, zink etcetera.
The metallurgic processes necessary for the project will be accomplished through use of solar power supply providing electrolysis, Electric Ark furnace or chemical processes.
NOTE:
In the long term, raw material for construction of solar panels and batteries can also be harvested and constructed with raw materials as well.
Future science:
A new genre of literature.
…
What is the difference between future science and science fiction?
…
Future science differs from science fiction in that there is very little fiction involved in it.
The objective of future science literature is to take current technology extrapolating with fifty year projections on current technology advancement.
integrated with quality creative writing.
mixed with the true human element of psychological physical in material capabilities under adverse circumstances.
The end product; digestible, Bold written material to encourage, motivate and propel the human species out into the expansion of space.
To colonize to Explorer to discover and to challenge the human species to our inevitable destiny. To grow as a species, to support sustain and clean up the only planet in the universe that we know harboring intelligent life.
And perhaps even to discover intelligent life Beyond our own species.
…
future science writers in history such is Jules Verne and others technological visionary)Are the True founders of this generation of literature that I humbly pursue. it is (in my opinion a disservice to Jules Verne or writers like him that they be qualified under the same categories as folks that right for fiction / fantasy.
Riters such as Jules Verne, Robert Hinlone, Isaac Asimov and others deserve some credit for the hard research in science and technology this type of writing requires.
~ Future Science~
Has as an accepted and standardized new genre of writing (in my opinion) is the least that we can offer in recognition of their contributions to our advancement as a species and a civilization.
Hopefully the Library of Congress will take notice of this idea.
…
I welcome you to the amazing new future that we have already entered.
…
So until then this is Hill Bowman signing off I will catch you on the next fly by
…
Sincerely ~
Hill Bowman

15 Essential Crane Hire Safety Tips
Cranes are indispensable in various industries, from construction to logistics, thanks to their ability to lift and transport heavy loads. However, operating these powerful machines comes with significant risks. Ensuring safety when hiring and using crane hire is paramount to prevent accidents, injuries, and damage.
Choose the Right Crane for the Job
Selecting the appropriate crane for your specific task is the first step in ensuring safety. Consider factors such as the weight and size of the load, the height the crane needs to reach, and the working environment. Using the wrong type of crane can lead to dangerous situations and inefficiencies.
Inspect the Crane Thoroughly
Before any lifting operation, conduct a thorough inspection of the crane. Check for any signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, corrosion, or other damage. Ensure that all components, including cables, hooks, and booms, are in good working condition. Regular maintenance and inspections are crucial to identify potential issues before they become hazardous.
Verify Operator Qualifications
Crane operators must be adequately trained and certified. Verify that the operator has the necessary qualifications and experience to handle the specific crane being used. Proper training ensures that the operator is familiar with the crane's controls, safety procedures, and emergency protocols.
Conduct a Risk Assessment
Perform a comprehensive risk assessment of the job site before beginning any crane operations. Identify potential hazards such as power lines, unstable ground, and adverse weather conditions. Develop a plan to mitigate these risks and ensure that all personnel are aware of the safety measures in place.
Ensure Proper Ground Conditions
Cranes require stable ground to operate safely. Assess the ground conditions to ensure they can support the weight of the crane and the load. Avoid setting up cranes on soft or uneven ground, and use mats or steel plates if necessary to provide additional stability.
Follow Load Limits
Adhere strictly to the crane's load limits as specified by the manufacturer. Overloading a crane can lead to catastrophic failures, including tipping or structural damage. Use load charts to determine the maximum safe lifting capacity for different configurations and boom lengths.
Use Appropriate Rigging
Select the correct rigging equipment for the load, including slings, shackles, and hooks. Inspect all rigging gear for wear and damage before use. Ensure that the load is properly balanced and secured to prevent it from shifting or falling during the lift.
Establish Clear Communication
Effective communication is vital during crane operations. Use standard hand signals or radios to maintain clear and concise communication between the crane operator and ground personnel. Miscommunication can lead to accidents and injuries, so ensure everyone understands the signals and protocols.
Implement Safety Zones
Establish and enforce safety zones around the crane's operating area. Keep unauthorised personnel out of these zones to reduce the risk of injuries from swinging loads or moving parts. Use barriers and signage to mark these areas clearly.
Monitor Weather Conditions
Adverse weather conditions, such as high winds, rain, and lightning, can significantly impact crane operations. Monitor the weather closely and suspend operations if conditions become unsafe. Wind can cause loads to sway, and wet or icy conditions can affect ground stability and traction.
Regularly Review and Update Safety Protocols
Safety protocols should be dynamic and regularly reviewed to incorporate new safety standards, technologies, and learnings from previous operations. Ensure that all personnel are updated on any changes to the safety procedures.
Utilise Technology for Monitoring and Control
Advanced technologies like anti-collision systems, load moment indicators, and crane monitoring software can provide real-time data on crane operations. These technologies can help prevent accidents by alerting operators to potential issues before they become critical.
Implement a Lift Plan
Create a detailed lift plan for each crane operation, outlining every aspect of the lift, including the load weight, crane configuration, rigging method, and communication plan. Ensure that all team members understand the lift plan and their specific roles within it.
Conduct Pre-Lift Meetings
Hold pre-lift meetings with all personnel involved in the crane operation. Use these meetings to review the lift plan, discuss potential hazards, and ensure everyone understands their responsibilities and the communication protocol.
Prepare for Emergencies
Have a comprehensive emergency response plan in place. This should include procedures for different types of emergencies, such as crane malfunctions, accidents, and severe weather conditions. Train all personnel on emergency procedures and conduct regular drills to ensure preparedness.
Crane hire safety is a critical aspect of any lifting operation. By following these ten essential tips, you can help ensure a safe and efficient work environment. Remember that safety is a collective responsibility, and everyone on the job site must be vigilant and proactive in adhering to safety protocols. Not a single book to be read...
I didn't read much this month. I started a few, read the Vanity Fair Hollywood issue, and a handful of Atlantic articles. But in the name of consistency, I wanted to do a monthly write-up.
Lover, Stalker, Killer got a lot of hype, and my initial reaction was positive as well.
The season finale of RHOP and part 1 of the reunion made the whole sleepy season worth it. Mia guaranteed her slot for next season (I hope) and solidified me as a fan! I just fear for the rest of the cast. This franchise was SO good! I'm sad to see litigious actions get in the way of what could be a good time. I can't even take a side because truly all parties are letting their pride get in the way of a lot of this series. I would like to explore the claims of colorism because at times I think the women -Candice and Wendy- take it too fair, and other times I think the others -Giselle, Robyn, Ashley- do get away with a lot that. But is that because of the color or their skin or because their better at being bitches? In fact, I would say Candice gets away with more bad behavior than anyone. Though, I do appreciate Candice bringing colorism up because whether I agree or disagree, it is an issue, and likely one she has to live through everyday. Who am I to minimize that? I think my concern is when it's used as a weapon against her cast. Don't get me wrong, I love the fighting. But there's a line where you eventually should want to empower each other, not sling insults.
I may have the harshest opinions about Lovely Bones. I remember the hype around that book and movie and it's been on my to-watch list for ages! I had such high hope with a young Saoirse Ronan, Stanley Tucci, Rachel Weisz, and crime drama with a touch of supernatural to boot! I also didn't hate that Mark Wahlberg was in it. He's a controversial guy, but I love a Boston accent. The moment stayed positive for 98% of this movie. And for those who have seen it (or read it; I'm not sure if the book follows the same ending), will hopefully understand how aggravating for our protagonist to steel a kiss rather than enact justice for herself and her family. I don't care that the villain got GOT eVeNtUaLlY. I guess I'll refrain from spoilers, but this ending was not it!
If you were a kid with cable between 1999 and 2010 and didn't watch Quiet on Set, what are you even doing? The best way I can describe this documentary is by steeling someone else's TikTok review unattributed: "These kids gave up their childhood, so we could have ours." My heart goes out to all children in show business. We see over and over again the damage it could cause, and we still can't seem to get it right.
I watched Schitt's Creek early on in the pandemic (as everyone seemed to do), but hadn't really rewatched it beyond memorable clips online. It was well worth the rewatch. In fact I would argue that the second go around was even better because there was no getting to know the characters. Honestly this show is so heartwarming and I envy the creators way of developing these characters. There growth over the 6 season is incredible. They never lose who they are at their core, but they become such lovable, fallible, people. We should all be so lucky.
Finally, Take Care of Maya was a fascinating watch. My main intrigue was the chronic disease the titular Maya suffered and that a ketamine comma in Mexico was the existing treatment. The ways in which our bodies can fail us is incredible -- how many times have I used "incredible" in this write-up? Note-to-self, expand my vocabulary. Of course the tragedy that this documentary reveals is a failure in yet another American system. In documentaries like this it makes me question if there will ever be a solution to these problems, though for my own mental health I try not to dwell on it outside of business hours (/s).

Tips For Selecting The Best Available Wire Rope Clamps
Wire ropes are among the most essential parts of any rigging or lifting setup. Wire ropes are versatile and may be used to hoist, rig, and tie down items of almost any size, shape, and variety. Wire Rope Clamps India is one piece of supplementary rigging gear necessary for the optimal use of wire ropes.
A wire rope clamp's many uses include:
Use a lap splice to join two wire ropes altogether.
The tip of a wire rope may be bent backward to form a load-bearing eye.
In a nutshell, a cable clamp is the thing that gives a wire rope its extraordinary adaptability. Because of the wide variety of sizes, forms, and materials available, you can be sure to find a suitable clamp for your lifting and hoisting needs. Yet until you get to it, it's essential to know what a wire rope clamp is, the different kinds of wire rope clamps, and some other basics.
A wire rope clamp is defined as:
A simple mechanical tool. This is a standard wire rope clip assembled with a saddle, U-bolt, and two hex nuts. This simple gadget is an excellent choice for temporary or seldom-used lifting and rigging tasks.
Never attempt to construct an industrial sling with wire rope clips. Employing rope clamps requires extreme caution. If you need to make a loop at the end of a pulling or crane cable, a wire rope with a clip will do the trick.
Assorted clamp varieties:
U-bolt and double saddle cable clamps are the two most common varieties. Their respective mechanical qualities and consequent uses are distinct.
The common U-Bolt Clamp for wire rope:
A U-bolt, two nuts, and a metal base called a saddle make up these cable clamps. The U-bold goes through the saddle, and the two nuts secure it. They are available in several dimensions and materials, such as steel and galvanized steel. Any rigging or lifting job may benefit from a U-bolt wire rope clamp.
Rope clips with a double saddle:
Two saddles, each containing one leg and two nuts, make up these claps. The mirrored design of the saddles ensures a snug fit between any two. The reversibility of this design is just one additional way in which things are convenient to utilize.
Which Wire Rope Clip Should You Use?
Using the incorrect clip on a wire rope might result in catastrophic consequences.
Consider these guidelines when you shop for a wire rope clamp.
Purchase from a trustworthy supplier of rigging equipment:
The first thing to do while looking for cable clamps is to find reputable Wire Rope Clamps Manufacturers to purchase them from. You don't want to utilize flawed or low-quality footage. Your cargo and personnel are in danger if you do this.
Before doing anything new, read the manual carefully:
You can observe that every wire rope clamp has its unique features. You must refer to the instructions to know where and exactly how to use the cable clamps. When purchasing clamps, it is essential to have access to the corresponding user manuals.
Think about the load specifics:
Considering the size and weight of the cargo is also crucial. Strong cable clamps that won't break under pressure are necessary to support heavier weights. Never use clips for long-term rigging or lifting purposes. Only short-term uses with light loads are appropriate for them.

Know your Industrial Lifting Slings
Lifting is an everyday operation in pretty much any industry. Not only is it a vital and unavoidable task, but also prone to risk and accidents. It is very important that a user understands the different type of lifting slings that are available and the benefits and drawbacks of each. A good knowledge of the slings will ensure that the right product is chosen for a job.
Lifting slings are broadly classified into three categories.
1. Wire Rope Slings (https://www.liftek-intl.com/steel-wire-rope-slings) 2. Chain Slings (https://www.liftek-intl.com/chain-slings-grade-80-fittings) 3. Synthetic Slings (https://www.liftek-intl.com/polyester-flat-webbing-slings-endless-round-slings)
1. Wire Rope Slings
Wire rope slings are fabricated by terminating eyes on the ends of the steel wire ropes using steel or aluminum sleeves, also called as ferrules. These can be fabricated in single-leg and multi-leg systems or into an endless sling called cable laid grommet. They can be used in straight, basket or choker hitch configurations.
Benefits of Wire Rope Slings
• Ideal for heavy-duty and tough operations. • Excellent properties of strength, durability resistance to abrasion, and flexibility • Extensive range of capacities possible depending on the steel grade and wire rope diameter • Available in single-leg and multi-leg assemblies. • Can be used to lift loads in high temperature environments • Easy availability of wide range of standardized end fittings to suit different lifting scenarios.
Drawbacks of Wire Rope Slings
• Inferior strength-to-weight ratio compared to other types of slings, especially synthetic slings. This adds to transport costs, rigging up time, effort, and costs especially in heavy-lift operations. • Wire rope slings are difficult to inspect especially for internal defects/damages like corrosion and broken wires. • Very low possibility for repair in case of damage beyond the normal inspection acceptance criteria. Rejection and discarding the sling is the only option.
2. Chain Slings
Chain slings are one of the most common types of lifting slings used around the world. Chain slings are made up of lengths of high tensile alloy steel chain, with a variety of fittings attached. Alloy steel used for manufacturing lifting chain is of specific tensile grade and suitable chemical and physical properties. The chain is heat treated for tensile strength, resistance to wear and shock absorption. These can be fabricated in single-leg, multi-leg and endless configurations.
Benefits of Chain Slings
Ideal for heavy-duty, harsh and tough lifting operations.
Resistant to high and low temperatures, chemical exposure, and physical damage.
In case of damage, it’s easy to repair and replace specific lengths of chain and the associated fittings. Need to be re-certified by competent person after any such repair or change.
Comparatively easier to inspect.
Easy availability of wide range of standardized end fittings to suit different lifting scenarios.
Drawbacks of Chain Slings
Expensive sling when compared to other options in the market.
Bulkier and more difficult to handle than synthetic slings. Very sensitive to kinks and knots in the chain.
May damage load being lifted due to bulky nature of sling, especially sensitive and/or delicate loads.
3. Synthetic Slings
Synthetic slings are one of the most common pieces of lifting equipment. They come as Web bing slings which is a flat webbing sewn together in single or multiple plies or as Round Slings which is endless loop of yarns, covered by a woven tubular cover/jacket. The material is typically polyester or nylon. Synthetic slings are ubiquitous in lifting operations due their low cost, ease of availability and wide range of sizes. These can be used in straight, basket or choker hitch configurations.
High performance round slings made from HMPE(high modulus polyethylene) is an increasingly popular option for heavy lifting jobs and engineered lifts.
Benefits of Synthetic Slings
Economical, easily available, lightweight, and wide range of sizes.
The soft and flexible polyester/nylon material grips and conforms to the shape of the load.
Superior strength-to-weight ratio especially for HMPE slings. They are strong enough to lift heavy loads but soft enough to not damage sensitive and delicate loads from scratching and crushing.
Synthetic slings are non-sparking, non-conductive and can be used safely in hazardous environment having a risk of explosion.
Drawbacks of Synthetic Slings
In comparison to wire rope slings and chain slings, synthetic slings are more prone to damage due to cuts and abrasions.
Users must consider the adverse effects of acid and/or alkalis on synthetic slings in applications involving exposure of the slings to chemicals.
Medium- and long-term exposure of synthetic slings to UV rays will lead to strength reduction.
Synthetic slings are not to be used in applications involving elevated temperatures since it has low resistance to heat.
The drawbacks listed above are negated to a large extent in high performance HMPE slings. But such slings are much more expensive than conventional synthetic slings and wire rope and chain slings.
Very low possibility for repair in case of damage beyond the normal inspection acceptance criteria. Rejection and discarding the sling is the only option.
Conclusion
Before selecting a lifting sling, it is good to consider and answer the below questions to zero-in on the best option.
Does the load have sharp edges and corners that may adversely impact the sling?
Is the load valuable and/or fragile and susceptible to scratches and damage on contact with the sling?
Is the load regular shaped or irregular shaped with an off-center CoG?
What is the temperature and chemical environment in which the load is being lifted and will it impact the sling?
What are the sling angles, height of lift, end attachments, number of lift points and type of hitch needed for the lift?
We hope that the answers to the above questions and the pros and cons of various types of slings listed above, will provide the user with a good guidance of the correct sling for the job.

Universal Testing Machine: Learn About Components & Functions
A universal testing machine (UTM) is utilized to apply tensile, compressive, or transverse stresses to a test piece in order to determine its mechanical characteristics. The machine's name refers to the variety of tests it can run on various types of materials. With the aid of UTM, a variety of tests, including peel, flexural, tension, bend, friction, and spring tests, can be carried out.
Components of Universal Testing Machine
Two primary components make up a universal testing machine as follow:
Loading Unit
Control Unit
Loading Unit
The loading unit controls how the test specimen is set up and how much force is applied. The table and crosshead on the left unit make up the loading unit. Control unit is the right component with a load indicator layout.
The following components make up a UTM's loading unit:
Load Frame
A universal testing device's load frame can be constructed using a single support or two supports. The upper crosshead, lower crosshead, and table that the specimen is set on for the compressive strength test make up the load Frame.
Upper Crosshead and Lower Crosshead
The test specimen is clamped at one end using the top crosshead. The moveable crosshead in the load frame is the lower crosshead, and its screws can be loosened and tightened to change the crosshead's height. A tapered slit runs through the middle of each crosshead. The tensile test specimen is supposed to be held in place by a pair of racking jaws that are located in this slot.
Elongation Scale
The elongation scale that is included with the loading unit measures the relative motion of the upper and bottom tables.
Control Unit
The control unit provides the adjustments in load application and the associated test result. The following are the primary parts of a universal testing machine's control unit:
Hydraulic Power Unit
Load Measuring Unit
Control Devices
Hydraulic Power Unit
This component consists of an oil pump that feeds steady oil into the load unit's main cylinder. The specimen is loaded more easily thanks to this flow. An electric motor and sump operate the oil pump in a hydraulic power unit.
Load Measuring Unit
The pendulum dynamometer in this device travels with the flow of non-pulsating oil in a tiny cylinder. Through a pivot lever, the pendulum is linked to the piston. Depending on the load placed on the sample, the pivot lever will flex.
The load pointer is created from this deflection and shown as the weight on the dial. A knob in the load measuring device allows the user to change the load application range. The measurement unit's precision determines the machine's accuracy rate.
Control Devices
The controls could be hydraulic or electronic. Switches are used by electric control devices to move the crossheads and turn the unit on and off. Two valves—the right control valve and the left control valve or release valve—make up a hydraulic control device. The specimen is subjected to load using a proper control valve.
Functions of UTM
UTM is mostly used to assess the mechanical characteristics of materials. UTM regularly conducts the following tests:
Tensile Test
Adhesion Tests
Bending Test
Hysteresis Test
Compression Test
Pull-Out Tests
Materials that can be tested by UTM:
Concrete
Steel
Winches
Steel Ropes
Cables
Springs
Steel Wires
Slings
Links
Rope
Chains

Let my heart be still a moment
Fandom: SCI Mystery Rating: General Relationship: Zhan Yao/Bai Yutong, Zhan Yao & Zhao Jue Tags: Angst with a happy ending, Case fic Words: 3815 Summary: When Bai Yutong is seriously injured on a mission, Zhan Yao has to find the ones responsible, receiving some help along the way.
Read on AO3
For @the-sassiest-trixster: You requested SCI, “go ham”, so I really hope you like it, despite it being more bonding with Zhao Jue than love story 😅
- - - - -
“It’s a trap,” is the last thought Zhan Yao has before the explosion hits him and throws him against a wall, his legs giving out from the shock and he drops down to his hands and knees. He can’t hear anything past the ringing in his ears, and feels some liquid trickling down his neck, ruptured eardrums, he thinks dimly. His right wrist feels wrong when he tries to support himself to get up, and there is blood in his eye, probably on the whole side of his face. He tries to wipe at it, only to get more in his eyes, and curses silently. Trying to make out his surroundings, he carefully sits up on his knees, still slightly shaky from the impact. The room they just had entered, an unremarkable living room with a worn bottle-green sofa and a low coffee table, looks quite different than mere seconds ago: Now he can see the bomb that was hidden in the sofa, cables and wires sticking out in all directions, shreds of green and white upholstery floating in the air like giant snowflakes. Miraculously, nothing’s on fire, a fact he should be grateful for, he thinks, when he notices the heap of limbs next to him, and freezes.
He can see at first glance that Bai Yutong is heavily injured, having been the first to enter the room and taking the brunt of the explosion. His limbs are twisted in strange angles, his usually pristine white suit has dark stains that are rapidly growing, and what Zhan Yao can see from his face, the part that is not covered in blood, looks wrong. His eyes are closed, and for the first time since they entered the apartment, Zhan Yao is scared.
Carefully, slowly, he approaches Bai Yutong on hands and knees, while trying to keep his weight from his injured arm. Reaching him, he extends a hand to wipe the blood from the other’s face, then stops mid-movement and takes his hand instead. Holding his breath, he takes the other’s pulse, readjusting his shaking fingers.
Nothing.
No pulse.
Zhan Yao starts shaking uncontrollably, clutching Bai Yutong’s wrist to his chest, his breathing ragged and almost hysterical.
No. No, no, no.
- - - - -
His consciousness flickers, and he only vaguely recognises their team members, frantically buzzing around them, before everything turns black.
He awakes to a distant beeping sound and a blinding pain behind his right eye. With a groan he tries to sit up, only to be stopped by a gentle hand on his chest.
“Easy there, Professor.”
Opening his eyes doesn’t really help his disorientation, since everything on his right side stays in darkness, while everything on the left is painfully bright. Groaning again, he tries to raise his hand to his face, only to discover it won’t move. Before he can try again with more force, the hand moves to his shoulder.
“Don’t move too much, Professor. You have a shattered shoulder and a shrapnel in your right eye, not to mention the broken wrist, ulna, and cracked ribs.” The voice laughs drily. “You should take it slowly for a while.”
“Yu… Tong,” he manages to croak out, voice hoarse and rattling.
The voice stays silent for a while, then, a shaky inhale. “His injuries… are worse than yours,” it explains, and Zhan Yao feels his heart freeze over. Ignoring the searing pain he turns his head to face the person beside his bed.
Zhao Fu sighs, then removes his hand from the other’s shoulder. In an attempt to look stern, Zhan Yao furrows his brows. Another sigh, then a cup of water appears in his field of vision. Apparently the other doesn’t trust his coordination, because he holds the cup to Zhan Yao’s lips who empties it in three large gulps. The cup is removed, and Zhan Yao makes an impatient noise for the other to continue.
“I won’t lie to you, Professor,” Zhao Fu says finally, “It doesn’t look good. He has multiple broken bones: a fractured skull, both cheekbones are shattered, some broken ribs… But the internal injuries are what concerns the doctors most.” He inhales again, his composure stretched thin over the boiling abyss of fear and worry. “I don’t..” He breaks off, then starts again, his voice raspy, “I don’t know if he… If he….” He trails off, not able to finish that thought, and Zhan Yao turns his head away to hide his tears.
- - - - -
It takes him four days to get out of bed, and five more to leave the hospital for good. All this time, Bai Yutong’s state doesn’t change, and Zhan Yao finds that, after almost a week of sitting by his bedside holding his hand, he has no more tears to cry. His grief has been replaced by a burning anger, and he knows exactly what he is going to do with it.
His first message after leaving the hospital is to the team, calling them to the office this afternoon. The second is to Zhao Jue.
Their relationship to the older man has developed into a strange kind of truce over the last months, and while he still doesn’t trust him, he knows what Zhao Jue is capable of - which is exactly why he asks him to meet.
Walking up the winding stairs to the loft always feels like climbing a lighthouse or an ancient castle, were it not for the strange paintings on the wall that only worsen his headache with their spiralling, whirling patterns.
Zhao Jue seems to be informed about the situation, since he comments neither on the eye-patch Zhan Yao is still wearing over his damaged right eye nor on the sling on his left arm, or his slightly limping gait, for that matter. He just nods in greeting and gestures towards a sofa, resuming to pour tea into two cups, then following Zhan Yao to the seat.
Only after they have finished the tea in silence and Zhao Jue has refilled their cups, he speaks. Clearing his throat, he asks simply, “Who?”
Zhan Yao exhales slowly, thinking what he can safely tell the other who is technically a wanted serial killer without compromising any police secrets, then shrugs inwardly and begins to talk. He tells him about the abduction case that had shocked the whole city into frantic activity, about their only lead being a shady witness, waiting for his own prosecution for human trafficking in a city prison. He had offered to give them information in exchange for a reduced sentence, and his leads had sounded reasonable, nothing indicating he was lying or setting them up. He had given them a name which in turn had led them to the apartment. Now it is obvious it has been a trap from the beginning, but who is behind it all, that Zhan Yao isn’t sure of. The witness didn’t look intelligent or influential enough to pull such a maneuver from a prison cell, which only leaves someone directly involved in the abduction.
Zhao Jue listens to these explanations without a word, only now and then stirring his tea cup with his ring finger. After Zhan Yao finishes, he stays silent for a while, looking thoughtfully at the younger man. Zhan Yao has laid out his cards, he thinks, now he waits for the other to show his hand.
Zhao Jue clears his throat again. “What do you want to do?” His voice sounds soft, gentle, betraying nothing of the steel Zhan Yao knows to lie underneath.
He almost shrugs, then remembers his shoulder and winces slightly, noticing how something like worry crosses over the other’s face, before he resumes his indifferent mask. It’s a good question, however. The next natural step would be to interrogate the witness again, to get him to spill some names, places, anything that could help them pin down the ones behind the bomb. The latter would be another lead to investigate, but it has already been transferred to the department that deals with explosives - and has a real lab, not that there is anything wrong with Gongsun and his experiments, but even his enthusiasm can’t replace a centrifuge. The problem is, though, that interrogating the witness-turned-suspect a second time has been the first thing Zhao Fu did after leaving the hospital, and unfortunately to no avail. The man had simply refused to talk, stating he already had helped them and didn’t know anything about a trap or a bomb. Thus, all their leads have gone cold.
Sighing, Zhan Yao shakes his head. “I don’t know,” he admits. Zhao Jue raises an eyebrow, but stays silent while Zhan Yao continues, “I could try interrogate the witness again, but the chances that he talks to me are--”
“He will talk.”
Zhan Yao startles at the interruption and closes his mouth with a snap, staring at the other.
“He will talk,” Zhao Jue repeats, and it’s with a finality that makes Zhan Yao shiver involuntarily.
- - - - -
He does talk.
It takes twenty minutes until Zhao Jue emerges from the interview room with two names scribbled on a yellow post-it note. The suspect is still sitting at the table, pressing his hands to his ears, rocking back and forth, mouthing silently. Zhan Yao remembers Bai Yutong’s still form in a hospital bed and doesn’t feel sorry.
Zhao Jue wordlessly hands the note to Jiang Ling, then grabs Zhan Yao’s uninjured shoulder and steers him towards his office. Closing the door behind him, Zhao Jue lets go and takes a step back, crossing his arms over his chest, raising his eyebrow in a silent invitation to talk. Zhan Yao bristles, but before he can snap at the other, a call from outside draws their attention back to the case.
“Professor, we found something!”
Without a word, Zhan Yao rushes past the other man who follows him after a second’s hesitation. He isn’t sure if he heard the other sigh, but ignores this detail for now. On the large screen, the two names Zhao Jue got from the suspect are displayed, next to the persons’ photos and information. Chen Shen, the left file reads. Fifty-three, suspected to be involved in the local drug trade, divorced, his daughter studies drama in London. The right side of the screen is almost empty, Zhan Yao notes with a frown. The woman in the blurry photograph looks a bit over forty, wearing a suit jacket and, oddly enough, a tie. Apart from her name, there are no further details. Zhan Yao turns to his team, a question on his lips, when Wang Shao explains, “Her real name is Zhang Qi,” and Zhan Yao whirls around to stare at him. That name is familiar, well-known in all law enforcement, for being the supposed head of a trafficking ring that specialises in little girls. There has never been so much as a rumour to tie her to anything, nothing that could be proven, and police and criminals alike are equally afraid and astonished.
Zhao Fu is the first to break the silence. “If she is involved in our abduction,” he says slowly, massaging the bridge of his nose, “then the girl is likely out of the country by now.” The rest of the team nod in begrudging agreement.
A chuckle from the door startles all of them, and several chairs turn around swiftly to face the intruder who adds cheekily, “Seems I’ve arrived at the perfect moment.” Stepping into the room, Zhao Zhen reveals three large boxes which he carefully deposits on the nearest desk, grinning widely. “I think you all need some sugar before you decide anything important,” he declares, and Zhan Yao’s heart clenches at the sight of his team, who give him sideway glances, smiling hesitantly. He isn’t the only one who worries, he realises, and forces his face into a smile. “Alright,” he nods, “let’s have some sugar before we continue.”
The donuts do help, and after a few minutes, Jiang Ling approaches Zhan Yao with wide eyes and powdered sugar on her cheeks. “Professor,” she exclaims, “I just had an idea how to find the evil lady.” Zhan Yao looks expectantly at her, only to receive a headshake. “It would probably take longer to explain it,” she shrugs apologetically, then adds, “I’ll just try it now, if that’s okay,” and Zhan Yao can only nod.
Soundlessly, Zhao Jue steps out of a corner and Zhan Yao startles. He still isn’t used to his right side being blind, and the other moving without a sound doesn’t help. He almost reprimands him, when the older man grips his shoulder once more, this time not to move, but to make him stay and listen. Zhan Yao shuts his mouth with a snap.
“You should go,” Zhao Jue says quietly, and Zhan Yao doesn’t have to ask where. Knowing the others will call him, he just nods, and turns to his team, but before he can form a word, Ma Han makes a shooing motion at him and sighs. “We can deal with this, Professor,” she says, sounding a tiny bit impatient, something Zhan Yao would definitely address if he had any brain capacity left for it. So he just nods again, and is out of the building and in a taxi in less than two minutes.
Bai Yutong’s state hasn’t changed in the two days Zhan Yao didn’t visit him, nor has he moved. Zhan Yao stands in the open door, looking at his mouse, wondering if he has ever seen him this still. Carefully, slowly, he approaches to sit in a plastic chair next to the bed, taking the other’s cool hand in his, pressing a kiss to his knuckles.
On the way here he thought about what he might tell his mouse, about the case, about the progress, but now that he sits here he finds himself not able to speak. Silently, he caresses Bai Yutong’s hand with his fingertips, then his face, then bends down to lean his forehead against the other’s, closing his eyes.
I miss you, mouse. Come back to me.
- - - - -
His ringing phone disturbs the quiet and for a moment he feels disoriented, misplaced, before he clumsily fumbles for it and takes the call without looking at the name.
“Let’s have lunch,” Zhao Jue says without introduction, and Zhan Yao is too stunned to protest. “The diner at the corner, opposite the park. Ten minutes,” he says, and hangs up. Zhan Yao stares at his phone screen for a second, before he scrambles to his feet, presses a kiss to Bai Yutong’s cheek, and heads downstairs.
When he arrives at the diner, Zhao Jue is seated in a booth in a dark corner, a steaming cup in front of him. Zhan Yao slides into the seat opposite him, careful of his injured shoulder. He notices that the other has chosen their seats so that Zhan Yao’s left side faces the room, his blind spot towards the wall.
When the waiter comes to take their order, he mindlessly lists a few things he remembers to have liked, then fiddles with the menu for a while. Zhao Jue gives him a pointed look, but doesn’t comment. When their food arrives, they eat in silence, Zhan Yao trying to savor the taste.
It is only after another cup of tea that Zhao Jue asks, “How is he?”, and Zhan Yao feels his shoulders slump.
“Unchanged,” he answers eventually, not able to fend off the image of his mouse’s lifeless face, and shivers.
“And how are you?,” the other asks, and Zhan Yao blinks at him in confusion. Since it has been apparent that his injuries weren’t as bad as Bai Yutong’s, every and all attention had been on the latter, even Zhan Yao’s own, so it takes him a moment to really parse that question. “I will be fine,” he offers after a while, because it is the truth. The doctors were optimistic that he would be able to use his eye again, his shoulder is healing, as well as all the countless other minor injuries and cuts he has sustained. He will be fine, eventually. It’s not important.
“That’s not what I asked,” Zhao Jue observes, and Zhan Yao freezes, mouth open in an aborted response. “I asked,” the other clarifies with a scrutinizing gaze at Zhan Yao, “how you are. Not how you will be.”
Zhan Yao blinks slowly at him, then closes his mouth. “I..,” he begins, then pauses. How is he? His head hasn’t stopped hurting since the moment he woke up in the hospital bed, his left arm isn’t usable at the moment, which makes getting dressed in the morning a complicated ordeal. But not being able to see is the worst, he realises, no matter how optimistic the doctors are, no matter how much worse Bai Yutong’s injuries are. He sighs and slumps further into his seat, leaning slightly against the wall. “Not that fantastic,” he admits. “I have had a headache for a week and my arm is pretty much useless. But I’ll live,” he tries to make light of it, when Zhao Jue reaches over and presses his thumb to Zhan Yao’s temple, his index finger on his forehead. Before he can protest, the searing pain dulls to a numb throbbing behind his temple, and he shudders in relief. “How..,” he starts, but Zhao Jue just hums, pulling his hand back.
Before Zhan Yao can respond in any way other than stare at the man opposite him, his phone rings. When he ends the call, Jiang Ling having told him she has news, he finds Zhao Jue has already paid for their meals and waits at the door, silent as always. Hurrying after him, Zhan Yao realises, not for the first time, how little of the other man’s motives he really understands.
Jiang Ling has earned her bonus this time, and beams at Zhan Yao when he tells her that. In fact, her discovery is worth a dozen bonuses. Zhan Yao understands only a third of her enthusiastic explanations, but it’s enough to be deeply impressed by the nerdy woman. She somehow managed to link a delivery of expensive, imported bath oils to an office building in the middle of nowhere, realising nobody would take a bath at their workplace - only certain kinds of workers, Wang Shao helpfully adds, which earns him a slap upside the head from Zhao Fu - and then finding the actual purpose of the building and its owner’s name: Zhang Qi.
Zhan Yao is delighted to finally have a clue, but his eagerness is dampened by Wang Shao’s question. “And what exactly are we going to do now?”
Of all the people in the room, Zhan Yao wouldn’t have expected Zhao Jue to step forward.
“I might have an idea.”
His idea is, even Ma Han has to grudgingly admit, actually quite reasonable. They have to investigate the office building, that much is certain, but the only one to have a chance to stay undetected - and be fine in case they don’t, but that is a detail no one mentions - is in fact Zhao Jue. So, some hours of preparation later, Zhan Yao, Zhao Fu and Zhao Jue are crammed together in an SCI observation van, the older man in a bright orange pest-control uniform.
“Remember,” Zhan Yao begins for yet another time, when the freshly-made exterminator directs a grin at him that makes him uneasy. Nodding, he says seriously, “I don’t know who you are and what the SCI is,” as if this is what they have been talking about for an hour. Horrified, Zhan Yao tries to interject, when Zhao Jue grabs his costume props, opens the door and hops down. With a wink to the other two, he marches off towards the office building.
Zhao Fu groans, hiding his face in his hands. “I really hope this wasn’t a mistake. The boss is going to murder us if this goes wrong.”
Zhan Yao nods silently.
Before they left the SCI, he had taken Zhao Jue aside, determined to get some real answers out of the other, but all he had received was a grin and another question, asked with sparkling eyes and quiet amusement in his voice.
“Do you trust me?”
Zhan Yao hadn’t had it in him to deny it.
When it’s all over, Zhan Yao doesn’t ask how Zhao Jue managed to get past fourteen heavily armed guards, doesn’t want to know, but somehow the other did, and he found the abducted girl. Next to twenty-seven others who have gone missing from the whole country during the last months.
When the storm has calmed, the girls have been brought to the hospital and the guards inside arrested - all of them suspiciously pliant and agreeable, but nobody had asked, and Zhan Yao sure as hell wouldn’t mention it either - Chief Bao holds a press conference, obviously enjoying the spotlight on himself and on his department. Zhan Yao tries to stay in the background. It doesn’t feel right to stand there alone, so he doesn’t at all.
They can’t exactly tell the media that the one having solved the case is a wanted serial killer who recently escaped prison, so Zhan Yao is for once glad for the Chief’s need for recognition. On the way back, Zhao Jue looks at him with a knowing gaze, but doesn’t say anything, and Zhan Yao tries to focus on something else.
With the older man’s help - and probably more than just a bit of coercion from Chief Bao to make sure the SCI were the ones to interrogate them - the culprits arrested in the office building spill their secrets surprisingly easily. They all name Zhang Qi as the mastermind behind the whole operation, giving even more names and addresses that were used to move the girls around, providing so many details that Bai Chi brings in a whole box of new ledgers to write in after the first afternoon. It’s a day later that one of them admits to building a bomb and hiding it in a sofa in an empty apartment, all of this on Zhang Qi’s orders.
After Zhang Qi and her inner circle are arrested, Chief Bao invites all of them to dinner, even Zhao Jue and his nephew, who both actually show up, even if one seems significantly more delighted than the other. Zhan Yao observes in silence, meeting Zhao Jue’s gaze over the animated talks and happy atmosphere at the table. He nods in acknowledgement, and the other smiles slightly.

Bai Yutong wakes a day later, in the late morning, the sun gently caressing his features. The first thing he does is to reach out to Zhan Yao, weaving his hand into the other’s hair and pulling him in. Their foreheads resting against each other, Zhan Yao takes his first deep breath in weeks.
