@steddiemas Day 19: Steddie as Parents
Tumblr media
Steve hadn't been able to stop looking at her. Eddie would be home soon, the snow had really started falling so they'd closed the shop early. Steve wasn't thinking about that however, not with the small bundle in his arms.
His parents had called the day before, said they'd be visiting, they never did that. Since Steve had moved out with Eddie into a little apartment downtown they'd cut off contact. Steve hadn't gotten many words out when they'd knocked on the door. They'd simply bushed the basket into his arms and a pile of documents and left. The papers were still sat on the coffee table in front of him.
He heard a jingle of keys and the front door opening, glancing up for the first time in an hour just to shush his boyfriend who was now just inside the door frozen and looking at the two of them.
"Shh, she's sleeping."
"She?"
Steve nodded, gesturing to the stack of papers.
"Her name is Emily. She's my little sister."
Eddie took careful steps and sat quietly beside him, taking in the face of the sleeping baby girl.
"She's beautiful, but sweetheart, what is she doing here?"
Steve sniffled at the question, the reality of the situation finally hitting him.
"My parents didn't want her, at least they figured that out earlier than they did about me." Tears had started to glisten in his eyes.
"Oh sweetheart, I'm sorry. So they brought her here? That's what their visit was about?"
Steve nodded again.
"Um, they've signed adoption documents, there's a letter in there, they said she's mine if I want her, or I can give her up."
Eddie wrapped his arm carefully around Steve.
"Did you decide?"
"I can't give her up, Eds. She's so small, and she didn't ask to be born into my stupid family, I want to show her she's loved."
Eddie smiled softly.
"I think we can handle that."
"We?"
Eddie nodded.
"She's a good start to those six little nuggets, sweetheart, don't think you can scare me away that easy."
That Christmas, one extra stocking was hung up by the tree, and Steve's home felt a little more whole.

Attached at the Hip
Steddie!Dads
Notes: ok I kind of ran away with this but basically: girldad!techer!Steve (also little league coach) and boydad!mechanic Eddie having kids who are besties and both of them are sick of the heteronormative bullshit other parents at the school put on their kiddos
Steve pinched the bridge of his nose, glasses dangling from his other hand, as the first grade classroom reached a fever pitch. The excitement for the first day of nice weather was clear, and recess was just a few short minutes away. The kids were supposed to be having free work time, but they had all gathered around the windows watching the kindergarteners play. There were complaints about the “babies” tearing up the nice new mulch and excited squeals about the colorful equipment that had been added to parts of the playground in a much needed renovation two weekends before. Only a few of the kids were actually doing work. Connor Munson was one of them, sitting quietly in the corner reading a fantasy book that was probably several grades higher than the average reading level in the class.
“Alright kids, one you were just like those ‘babies’ last year and two its independent work time and you should be doing something quietly in the classroom for the next fifteen minutes. I know we are all excited, but we need to finish up the morning before we can run around.” With several annoyed huffs, the kids found their way to the small tables or on comfy spots on the floor. many took up reading, but a few pulled out some materials to do other things and Steve’s head stopped throbbing as he watched them return to a hum of excitement rather than the reverberating yelling from before.
The first and second graders raced onto the playground, immediately swarming towards the new equipment and the screaming started almost right away. Steve and the rest of the teachers were clumped in a few different spots to ensure full coverage of the playground, quietly chatting.
“Daddy!” Steve turned his attention to the little blonde who was running full speed, knowing he would catch her into a big tight squeeze. Claire giggled, pressing her face into his shirt.
“Did you have a good morning?” She nodded as he set her down.
“I told everyone how you let me bring leftover pizza for lunch!” Steve let out a chuckle, as did the other first grade teacher, Claire’s teacher in fact.
“Well why don’t you go play. I think Connor went over that way.” Steve gestured in the direction he had seen the little boy go towards and she gave his leg a tight squeeze before skipping off.
“Oh those two, attached at the hip. They’re an adorable little couple.” Steve tried not to let the cringe show on his face, just plastered on a little smile to keep the peace and made up an excuse to check another part of the playground. It had been going on for two years, the commentary. Connor and Claire, attached at the hip, then immediately to couple. It enraged him, and he knew it made Connor’s father angry too. The heteronormative bullshit had been pushed on Steve throughout his lifetime too, forcing it to take years longer than it should have for him to realize he definitely didn’t only like girls. He did his best with Claire at home. She knew he went on dates with both women and men, and she adored her Aunt Robin and Auntie Nancy, but Steve could see that the six year olds heard the comments.
The rest of the day came and went. He also ate leftover pizza for lunch, not because he was such a fantastic father, but he hadn’t made it to the grocery store this weekend while he was preparing for the soccer little league. Connor loved soccer, Claire did not, but the girl still did it and Steve appreciated, maybe a little too much, the fact that Eddie Munson would be there every weekend, right where Steve could ogle him without making a playdate excuse.
“Cooooonnooooooooor.” The loud voice cut through Steve’s lack of focus and he looked up to where Eddie Munson appeared, wearing a slightly grease stained shirt, his hair tied up behind his head in, what Robin said was, a messy bun. The little boy who had been sitting beside Steve and Claire leapt out of his spot and ran to his dad, tossed into the air and then squeezed into a tight hug.
“Hi dad.” Steve stood up, sticking out his hand for a shake as Eddie came over.
“How was my boy today?”
“A little angel as always,” Steve laughed, handing him Connor’s backpack. Claire had stood up too. It was a little routine they had, Steve staying after with the kids so that Eddie could finish his shift. There were a number of kids that had parents who couldn’t pick them up at 3 on the dot, since they had shifts that ended on the hour of the half hour, and with Claire and Connor wanting to spend time together, Steve had never had a problem being the teacher who stayed. And if it meant he got to see Eddie Munson one more day of the week, well five more, well no one had to know that.
“We’re still on for this weekend?” Eddie’s eyes had gone soft and Steve did a quick look around, all of the rest of the kids and parents had gone. He gave Eddie a smile reserved only for him.
“Always.” Sure their kids might be attached at the hip, but not because of some stupid expectation that they would fall in love when they were older, more because they were practically siblings at this point.

Chapter 2:
Chapter 1
─── ・ 。゚☆: .☪ . :☆゚. ───
April 30, 1996.
Eddie, who was at his studio, sat on his piano with some pens and papers, trying to figure out how the bridge of his new song should go. He spent hours, repeating over and over the melody but then stopping at the same part, since it felt like nothing could ever continue it. As if there was no follow up to the story he was writing, like if in the middle of the book the protagonist died and there was no more story at all. It frustrated him so much, he was scratching his head nervously, biting his nails and even smashing the piano tiles whenever he tried to even continue the song. Nothing seemed to work. So when his Motorola cell phone rang, he thanked god to be able to get away from the monster that has become his piano.
“Hello?”
“Eddie!” Steve’s voice called from the over side, in a quite excited way that grabbed the man's attention quickly
“Baby? Aren’t you supposed to be in class right now?” he asked
“Lunch break”
“Lunch break? But it's like 10 in the morning?”
“Eddie, it's 2… have you been in the studio all day?” the shift in steve’s voice knew that if he said yes the answer would bring him trouble
“No?”
“Eddie! I’ve told you it's not healthy to spend an entire morning locked in a room with only a piano and a guitar! Go eat something, or even just go to the bathroom”
Eddie huffed knowing that Steve hated the fact Eddie spent an entire day writing and not even eating, but everytime he was there, it felt like time moved faster somehow.
“I know, I'm sorry, I'm gonna grab my jacket now and leave to go eat something alright? Now what are you calling me for?” eddie asked as he stood up from the piano stool and walked to the the little table besides the door and grab his keys
“Oh! I almost forgot!” Steve’s disappointed and warning tone changed to a giddy one which turned Eddie's heart around “So remember I told you I was gonna talk to my colleague, Sarah, whose cousin works at the Orphanage? Well, i got in contact with the director of the place, and told me we could go next Friday at 4”
“Wait really?” eddie stopped his tracks as he walked out of the studio department
“Yes!” he exclaimed “there are about 23 kids, the age ranges are form 2-15 year old”
“I'm not adopting a two year old human, sorry” Eddie laughed nervously. He still won't be completely in love with the idea of a kid in their house, but at least he could hold a 10 minute conversation with a 6 year old. And that was progress
“I know” Steve sighed a laugh “so i told her that probably a kid from 6-12, and that we don’t really have anything in mind”
“Wait” Eddie thanked God that there was no one else in that elevator with him at this moment “you told her about… us? Like… the fact that we…”
“Are a same sex marriage? Yes'' and with that eddie sighed loudly “ she told me that she has had a lot of queer parents adopting, so it's definitely not a problem, we just need to make sure we are suitable for taking care of a minor”
“And how-”
“It's an interview. And before you panic, no, it's not about knowledge about children” another loud sigh came from eddie “it's about it we are… responsible and economically okay to take care of a child. Then they are coming to our house to make sure the kid is gonna live in a safe and decent house. It's just regular procedure”
“Wow'' Eddie smiled, quite shocked that this might be finally happening. They might be finally adopting a kid “and how long to like… get the kid”
The other line went dead. Eddie couldn't even hear Steve’s breathing. Just by this reaction, he knew the answer was not gonna be pleasant.
“Steve?”
“Umm…. they said about…. 6 to…. 18 months?”
“18 Months!?” Eddie exclaimed loudly “Steve!”
“I know!!” he whines back
“I'm gonna be gone! Tour starts in a year and- what if i’m not there? What if the child comes into the home, and i'm not there and then when i come home they hate me? What if something happens to them or me, and I never get to meet them! Steve-”
“Eddie i know! I just… We’ve been waiting for such a long time…. There is hope that maybe it could be less. They say that if it works perfectly, it can be at least 6 months”
“For me to leave in six months? Not to forget, this tour is long, and then i have to do interviews and shit I- steve…” Eddie breathed loudly “I don’t want you to do this alone, because you and I both know it sucks not having a parent around, and I'm letting that kid go through this. I don't wanna be like you dad! I don’t want to leave for over a year, and then just come around to say happy birthday or merry christmas and then leave again! And with the new album-”
“Eddie you would never be like my father you hear me? Never.” Steve sternly said as he sat up from his desk chair to look at the window to where the kids were playing football “I just… maybe… you should just… not release the album maybe?” Steve knew he was on thin ice now.
“Not- Are you crazy?! I’ve been working my ass off with Gareth for almost 2 years now! We can’t just postpone! This is super important for me Steven, I can't just drop my entire work for a kid!”
And the line went dead. In both ends, the men were holding the phones to their ear with eyes closed looking at the floor trying to somehow make this better. To somehow change the entire universe so they could be happy and all could fit. But they can’t. So when Eddie heard the 3 beeps of the dead line, he knew he fucked up and real bad this time.
He left for a Chinese restaurant and bought the usual. He walked back to his studio, and sat back again at the piano while he ate his chicken quietly. And then it hit him. The melody of the song suddenly crashed into him like a train and it all made sense. The story does continue, and this little rocky path made him stumble. But once he placed both hands on the keyboard the story seemed to write itself as he just played along with only one thing on his mind.
Steve.

Steddie dads with a son
His name is Sam. Yes, it is from Lord of the Rings. Yes, Steve knows.
To Eddie's dismay, he really likes sports.
Steve is a volunteer coach for all of Sam's teams: tee ball, basketball, soccer, football - Eddie can't keep up.
Eddie is always cheering on the sidelines with the best snacks.
They go to games as a family. Eddie knows what is going on, but gets everything wrong since Sam loves correcting him.
Lucas is his favorite uncle. Dustin is a close second. The competition between them is fierce.
Robin is obviously the favorite aunt. She always comes into town with gifts from her travels. She also taught him French and Spanish.

I really hate it when we fight.
Don’t get me wrong. We’re utterly and totally head over heels in love with each other. Have been for the past six years. And usually, it’s amazing.
So when we do get into it, I mean, really get into it, it always leaves me feeling like shit.
What can I say? I’m Eddie Munson. I didn’t exactly grow up in the picture-perfect domestic bliss. The less said about my old man the better.

In a series of events that absolutely nobody could have predicted, Steve’s parents adore Eddie. Richard thinks he’s witty and sharp, a breath of fresh air for a man stuck in endless meetings with corporate egos. Linda laughed so hard the first time they invited him to dinner, she cried. Nobody is more surprised than Steve, who brought his alternative high school dropout boyfriend to his parents almost as an act of late teenage rebellion. But hilariously, Eddie’s fun personality and his disdain for everything mainstream makes him catnip for rich pretentious people. They bond over their hatred of the idiosyncrasy of middle class small town people in America, everyone is so closed minded and average, you know? No ambition, nothing! And this guy is a rockstar, Steve!, they say. You could use some of that ambition yourself! Have some goals in life!
It’s almost insulting. Like that’s his boyfriend. They can’t like him more than he does!! But Steve even caught his mom smoking pot with Eddie in the porch after dinner one time, which was insane to him since the last time they caught him doing exactly that Steve had been grounded for a week. You were 16 Steve, and a star athlete, we couldn’t have you smoking in the house, she argued. And Eddie, the treacherous man that he was, agreed with her. How would you feel if Dustin started smoking, huh?
In retrospective, Steve should have seen this coming. His parents hate Hawkins people as much as Eddie does, they do everything in their power to be away from town as much as it’s physically possible without actually moving away. They’ve had the “moving to another state” conversation several times already, and it’s been Steve who refused every time. The entire fight about Steve not getting into any college had been more about having to stay in Hawkins than anything else. But of course, his boyfriend who is literally everything this town hates in a person would be exactly what his parents like. No bond is stronger than the one between people who hate the same things.

One day the kids wake up and they can’t find Steve. They search his house, the school track, the basketball courts, anywhere they can think of where they might find him and he’s nowhere to be found. When they go to Robin’s house, she’s missing too. Her parents haven’t seen her since she disgraced their family by proclaiming herself to be a lesbian.
Even Eddie hasn’t seen either of them and that’s particularly worrying since the three of them are always together.
Both Steve and Robin come back two weeks later with sunburns and matching tattoos on their wrists. They had been at one of the Harrington vacation homes in Florida getting drunk, checking out girls, and getting tattoos. It’s also when Steve realized he was interested in Eddie and plants a smooch on him as soon as he gets back to see Eddie checking out his ass.

Chapter 3:
Chap 1 & Chap 2
─── ・ 。゚☆: *.☪ .* :☆゚. ───
Just as Eddie said, he eventually went on tour across the USA, leaving Steve and Gimli all on their own in the house. And the worst part is that they never got a call back from the adoption agency. Now that Steve was all alone and the only  thing he thought about was the kids and kids and more kids,  eventually became a strange topic for him. After that fight with Eddie, they both agreed to wait till they were both home for enough time to take care of a child.
So he tried to spend as much time on the basketball court of the school he worked in, playing alone and trying to think of anything but Eddie or the kids. He sometimes would also use the school’s pool, to bring back the memories of him being the captain of the swimming team back in hawkins. The more he ran or swam, the less the thoughts of kids were inside his head, and the less he missed eddie. So for the past week it has become a routine to, end work, go do whatever sport he felt like doing till 7 o'clock striked. Then he would go back to his office, get his stuff and head home to Gimli.
Today was Friday, November 4, 1996. Steve was drying his hair as he walked to his classroom with the blue towel on his hands. He had just spent the last 4 hours swimming over and over again at the pool, since Robin had a date and he was all alone. Since it's friday, he would usually have a movie night with Eddie, but since he’s not there, Steve just kept his head under the water to forget his loneliness. His shoes echoed through the completely empty hall. But as Steve started walking slower he realized that wasn't the only sound in the hall. He heard soft cries and sniffs from the half open theater class.
Steve has been through enough trauma to know he shouldn’t follow the strange noise coming from the dark room, and especially if he is on his own and with nothing to defend himself with, but the cries were so heartbreaking, he didn’t even care if it was a trap. When he started working as a teacher, his empathy levels went through the roof, and whenever a kid had a slight frown on his face, something in him made him reach out and make sure that kid is not going through a hard or bad time. But still a nostalgic feeling crept over his shoulder and made him feel this slight panic on his stomach, what if it was a trap?. He immediately discarded the noise from the upside down since the last time he checked, Demogorgons don’t cry, and the gate was closed over 10 years ago. But it still could be a thief or some robber, so to defend himself. Before he could actually step into the theater class, he looked around the lockers to find a Tennis racquet which he grabbed and placed in an attack position in case of an emergency.
He took a step into the dark room to find a completely Victorian age set on the stage. It looked right out of a Shakespeare play, with deep red drapes, a large wooden table with a plastic shaped wine glass with a fake dagger next to it. But on the deep right end of the stage where a tall bed with big pillows and red velvet bedspread was located, was a dark haired girl sobbing into her hands. She was clearly under the probably fake bedspread and was wearing a black hoodie.
Steve’s teacher and mommy instinct switched on as he left the stupid tennis racquet and turned the drama class light on. The girl on the bed gasped completely shocked to realize she wasn't as alone as she was. She looked towards the door to find her Counseling teacher in the entrance.
“Mr Harrington?”
“What the hell are you doing here?!” he asked with a loud and firm voice. He really wanted to approach her and hug the life out of her, but since he was a teacher, he needed to put the authority hat on. He walked down the step while placing his towel behind his neck.
“I-I- I should go '' she stumbled out the bed as she grabbed a backpack on the floor filled with pins that loudly clashed as she moved the backpack harshly. Before she can even step out of the stage Steve is already walking up the stairs from the side stage.
“What’s going on? Why are you crying? '' He said as he gently placed his hand on her shoulder, for her to flinch and move backwards.
“It’s nothing” she sniffed
“Nothing? You’re at school on a Friday because of nothing?,” he asked rhetorically. The girl seemed amused so he just came up with a better way to open to her “How about we go back to my office i believe i have some cookies left that are about to expire”
“I-” she looked at the floor and then mumbled quietly “I… okay”
She gave in quicker than he thought, so he nudged to the office and she just nodded. She went back to the bed on the stage and removed from under the bed a sports duffle bag filled with stuff. She then picked up her sneakers and started to put them on. Steve was quick to grab her bag and put it on his shoulder to help her a bit. Once she was all laced up, they both walked to Steve's office in a tense and uncomfortable silence.
Once they got there, Steve opened his drawer and took out just what he remembered from earlier. It was an Oreo pack that was about a month old. As the young girl sat down in front of him and quickly grabbed a tissue from a little yellow box with some drawings of sheep.
“Let’s see” Steve turned them around to find the expiration date “it says it has a few days more, how about we eat them before i have to throw them”
“S-sure” she sniffed as she blew her nose.
Steve opened the package and offered the girl in front of him a cookie, which she gladly accepted. He took one for himself and left them on the table that separated them. He then crossed his arms over his chest, knowing he had to put his teacher shoes on for this conversation.
“So… School on a Friday night, sleeping on the theater bed and now eating cookies with the basketball and swimming couch… would you like to explain to me how we got here…… I’m sorry, um I don’t know your name” he says honestly which kinda made her laugh
“Julia… Bennet” she said as she swallowed her cookie and wipe the few tears she had left
“Bennet…. Is your brother Owen? He’s on the basketball team that’s why I ask” he said. He does have the parents' contact, so maybe he could take her back to her house.
Her face, though, shifted clearly. Julia looked down at her lap where her thumbs fiddled together, she nodded quietly. Steve clearly realized that maybe her brother wasn't the best subject to talk about at the moment, so he just left that information in the drawers for now.
“Now Julia, would you like to explain to me how you got here? It’s quite late, and i'm pretty sure your parents must be looking for you”
She scoffed loudly before covering her mouth with her hands while staring back at the coach.
“Im sorry” she mumbled
Steve nodded and took another cookie, as he indicated her to start talking
“Well i… I got home after school, and I invited my best friend over for a sleepover. Do you know Katya?” she asked
“Howard?”
“Yeah”
“Yeah, she’s in the swimming team”
She looked back down and her stability started to break as she let out a small sob
“Well” her voice was seconds away from breaking, but she didn’t seem to care, because she kept trying to speak as if everything was okay “we were in my room and we were just talking … then I- well she- and i….” she stumbled
“Take your time sweetie” Steve said as he pushed the oreo package towards her. She took one quickly and shoved into her mouth. After a few bites, we swallowed harshly and grabbed another tissue to wipe her eyes.
She inhaled and looked up trying to make the tears stop.
“We kissed?” she shrugged while cringing at herself “and- jesus christ…. My brother walked in and h-h-he told my d-” and after that she broke as she shoved her face on her hands and cried
Steve got off his chair to kneel next to her, placing a hand on her back and softly caressing it. He knew in that exact moment how the story continued. I mean, Eddie went through something quite similar, so he only placed the pieces on his mind and made a quick and smart decision.
“Okay, let’s go” he said as he grabbed the cookies, his own bag, and Julia’s bag.
The girl pushed her hair back asking where
“There is no way you are staying the night here, and no way I'm taking you back home. So you are gonna spend the night me, i have an extra room, and you can spend the weekend if you want to”
“Mr Harrington you don’t need-”
“I do” he interrupts and looks her in the eyes “I have to make sure you are safe, that’s my job, so now grab your stuff and let's get moving, alright?”
Julia smiled and stood up. They both walked to the only car left in the parking lot left, in complete comfortable silence. Steve placed her things on the back as she sat on the passenger looking at the cassette collection. Steve noticed she was quite interested in his favorite, so as they drove back to his house, Steve and Julia sat side by side listening to Eddie’s music. Julia seemed to know the songs quite well which made Steve smile. Once they got home, Steve took her to the guest bedroom that was usually for when anyone in the party stayed over, or anyone in Eddie’s band needed a place to crash.
“Now this is gonna be your room, we have a small bathroom attached to it, it has some products and stuff if you need. This room is quite nice because the sun doesn’t really get here till sunset, in which this room turns into this… Golden box, and my hus- roommate says” Steve smiled tightlipped
“You have a roommate?” Julia asked quite scared
“Yeah but he’s not really here for the moment. He’s currently out of town… to see family”
“Okay” she nodded
Steve then walked out to let her have her space, and to make sure the house was clean. Since Gimli is the only one home 24/7, he would push things off the tables or even take some of Eddie's clothes into the living room where he would sleep on them. So Steve was picking up some band t-shirts on the floor, some decorations and a dirty sock, when Julia came out of her room and stood on the door looking at the floor. She was wearing her pajamas, which consisted of a band t-shirt  shirt (a band that Eddie definitely would have known), and some long sweat shorts that reached her knee.
“Mr Harrington?” she called, and he instantly placed the stuff on his hand behind his back to make sure she didn’t see the mess “Are you…. Are you gonna call the cops on me?”
Even though he believed it wasn't possible, his heart broke even more.
“What?! Where did you get that from?”
“My dad…” she sniffed “he told me that… homosexual should be dead” then gasped “and… taken to jail- and i” and finally sobbed like a kid “don’t want to go to jail Mr Harrington- I swear i’ve tried to change but-”
Steve started to cry now too. He ran to her and held her as he would have held his younger self. The way he would have held tiny steve, comforting him, telling him that being confused over his sexuality is normal. She buried her head on his chest sobbing loudly. So loud that Steve didn’t hear the door opening.
“Honey! Im Home-” Eddie yells but stops as he witnesses the single most cutest thing ever. His husband was holding an 11 year old girl who was crying.
“Eddie?” Steve looked up to see him holding a bouquet of flowers and a duffle bag “wha-”
And what happened next was just a blur. It was a mix of both grown ups crying because they missed each other, and the small girl crying at the comfort both adults gave her as they told her that being queer isn’t illegal and that they would protect her in any way possible. Even though Eddie didn’t really know who she was, he comforted her and told him his experience of getting kicked out of the house for his sexuality and how at the end of the day it was for the best. Later at night the three of them, and Gimli of course, curled up on the couch and ended up watching the old VHS tape of Mary Poppins. Julia, who was on the edge of the couch with the fat, short, orange cat on her lap, fell asleep by the end of the movie, and so did Steve. Eddie, knowing his husband had a rough day, stood up and carried the girl to the guest bedroom.
She stirred awake as he left her on the bed
“Shhh shhh, it's okay, don’t be scared, '' he whispered. “I'm just leaving you at bed, okay? Nothing else”
Julia’s eyes fluttered and looked up at the adult who had his face covered by his hair
“T-thank you” she murmured under her breath as she took the duvet and covered her shoulder “mr..”
“Call me Eddie kiddo'' he winked as he kneeled in front of her “and, it's the least we could do. Beside” he felt a small purr and lean on his legs to look down at the cat who seemed to want to get on the bed “It looks like Gimli the Dweeb seems to like you” He took the cat and left it next to the girl who smiled at the sight of the cat.
“He’s really fat” she laughed
“Yeah he is” Eddie smiled as he scratched the head of the cat. “Now” he stood up softly and looked down at the girl “what do you want for breakfast tomorrow? We usually have some leftover waffles and if not I could make you some pancakes, how about that?”
Her eyes lit up at the thought and she just nodded quickly while biting her lip to stop herself from smiling. Something that Eddie copied realizing that the fact of seeing a girl so happy made him happy. He messed up her hair and left the room, leaving the door half an inch open just like Wayne used to do when he was a kid.
As he was out of the room, he saw Steve sleeping soundly. Eddie woke him up and took him to bed. He changed his clothes and tucked him in, and then it was his turn. Once they were both on the bed, Steve curled up into Eddie bare chest, Eddie dared to speak.
“So” he started as he turned off the lamp “who the kid we are babysitting?”
Steve lets out a laughy breath through his nose
“Her name is Julia. I- i found her at school, apparently she was gonna spend the night there”
“What happened?” Eddie asked as he played with the boy’s hair “why did she get kicked out?”
“Um… she told me that she invited her best friend to sleep over and they kissed, her brother walked in and ratted her out to her dad. She didn’t say much after that, so i just guess he kicked her out and left her friend at her house”
“Wow… can’t believe 20 years later this shit still happens” Eddie sighs as shakes his head “the worst part is that its probably not gonna stop”
“I know” Steve started redrawing Eddie's chest tattoo of a bat. “I just didn’t expect it from his brother. He’s usually so nice and like… not homophobic”
“Not everyone who looks like good people are good people” Eddie shrugs
“Mhm”
The room falls silent.
“Thank you for bringing her here” Eddie then says “I'm really thankful that she didn’t go through what I did. And you being there is like wayne being there for me, so really thank you”
Steve raised and kissed Eddie in the lips for the first time in the day. They mumble “I love you”’s as they snuggle till they both fall asleep and the Harrington Munson household goes quiet.

obsessed with the idea that as soon Steve Harrington realizes that he is bi he skips over the internalized homophobia and the denial and goes straight (not! lol) to boyfriend. He tells Robin he has a crush on Eddie while he drives her to school in the morning and by the time they have their shift in the afternoon he is already Wayne's son in law. He gets over the whole crisis stuff in like 5 mins and panics instead over where he will take Eddie on their first date. He realized he really wants to run his hands through Eddie's hair (in a gay way) and half an hour later he already has his tongue down his throat.

Having depressing Steve Harrington Whump thoughts this sunny Sunday morning.
I usually headcanon Steve's parents as being neglectful and absent given their lack of screen presence in the show and thought about Steve grappling with this throughout his childhood.
Being left alone for days and eventually weeks at a time, starting much younger than was appropriate, but it was the era of latchkey kids and Richard and Darleen Harrington assumed Steve was capable enough to not really need watching. The house never burned down.
Their son was fine.
And Steve would be the first person to agree, to smile wanely while the migraines pounded in his head, a parting gift from Billy Hargrove and the and Russians. He was fine.
It was fine.
Until the spring of 1986 when all Hell literally broke loose.
During the last events of the Upside Down and the earthquakes that almost decimated Hawkins, the Harringtons finally come back to town, horrified to be called in from Indianapolis by the charge nurse at Hawkins General Hospital.
Their relationship does get a little better after nearly losing their only son. They don't talk about it, the lost years of quality time, but Steve has made begrudging peace with it and is happy to have them around now for family dinners and the holidays.
They are even fairly good about his relationship with Eddie once he finally comes out. Richard takes a little longer to warm up to the idea, but Darleen seems determined not to lose Steve again.
And things are fine for awhile, the four of them have found an equilibrium amongst each other. Richard busies himself with offering to help with repairs around their house as needed, the leaky sink in their guest bath or the backdoor that was never hung correctly. While Darleen is always quick to bring over a new recipe for them all to try at the next family dinner.
They don't talk about the fact that this is the most home cooking Steve has ever experienced in his 30 years of life or that he didn't know his dad even owned a screwdriver.
But it's fine.
They manage.
It's only after the adoption of their daughter that Steve begins to notice the changes in his parents in a way that makes his chest feel tight.
"I just, I don't get it," Steve says quietly to Eddie one summer day. Richard and Darleen are out in the yard with Abigail, playing in the sun. Abigail shakes a flower from the garden in Richard's face while he pretends to sneeze exaggeratedly, making Abigail break into peals of laughter.
Eddie frowns at Steve, watching as he crosses his arms tightly around himself.
"There has to be something going on, it doesn't make any sense how they're being with her," Steve bites out eventually. He lifts a trembling hand to his hair and tugs harshly at the roots.
"Okay woah woah," Eddie says slowly as he stops forward and gently coaxes Steve's hands away from his hair, "Stevie, sweetheart, I don't understand".
Eddie watches as Steve's gaze travels out the window once more to see Darleen lift their giggling baby girl above her head before lowering Abigail to pepper kisses all over her cheeks. Eddie smiles at the sight but it quickly vanishes as he looks back at Steve who is looking longingly at his mother.
"Because," Steve says, his voice catches on the growing lump in his throat, "if they were always capable of this, of being there, then why couldn't they do that for me?"
