I know this line has been made fun of endlessly already and their core point is like "its 'punk' because the nightmarish conditions arising from immense societal change was the birthplace of the counter movements, ideologies and revolutions which form the basis of modern conceptions of anticapitalism" but this IS inches from wording it as "capitalism is punk as fuck"

Has anyone ever actually done anything "punk" with a steampunk setting? Like, it's based on Victorian England, you could use it to explore classism, colonialism, racism, misogyny, ableism, queerness, respectability, environmental exploitation, the beginnings of institutionalized science, the weakening of religious authority, etc., etc., but all I ever see is gears, clocks, and upper-class fashion.

this week I'd like to share a character I'm working on for a picture book project, this project is at the bottom of my list of "to-dos" but I hope to get it done or close to being done, sometime in the 4th quarter of 2024.

"14th of Torenheart, 1889

Citrinne, Seinne and I near the Sovereign Valley Excavation Site. Seinne insisted she come along, even though I told her how dangerous it was. Bright-eyed as always, that one.

I just know the "mythical" Vetaran Kingdom is anything but. Too many pieces of evidence in this region alone point to that civilization being as real as the day is long. The worker boys were pitching a fit but I gave them a little pep talk. Might have been too hard on them though, saw one crying afterwards. Either way, I hope to uncover something soon."

Guess who had more whumpy dreams last night! Me!

Here they are: (read more because the first one has self-harm)

In the first dream, I was part of a play in which two people stab themselves, and I was one of those two. After the first person plunged the knife into their chest and bled and "died," it was my turn...but I didn't die, despite all the blood (I think I started writing the story as I was acting it out; I remember a sentence that was something like "In the dark, the pool of blood grew and glistened.") So I kept acting and bleeding, and having fun.

So that was that dream...the next one involved a group of steampunk-esque adventurers exploring space. One of them was a blond-haired boy whose lungs were more sensitive to a certain gas in the atmosphere that didn't bother the others, so he always had a supply of oxygen and medicine with him, and would take regular breaths from the little machine when he needed to. In the middle of explaining something to us (I was one of the explorers), he suddenly couldn't breathe and collapsed. As he lay unconscious in bed, one of the other explorers fastened his inhaler device in place because he clearly needed it, but he woke up a moment later, ripped it off his face, and got out of bed. I knew he would need the inhaler thing in a moment, so I handed it to him...and then I woke up.

Both dreams were super vivid, and I've been thinking about them all day...

NaNoWriMo day 13

so I’ve got 1,651 words so far and the politics got mostly glossed over in favor of Licia having mega-aro+trauma feels over her queerplatonic relationship with Cal, because my natural impulse is always going to be toward character journey, and relationship building, especially the platonic relationships. As much as I love a good romance this mega-aro bitch gets really turned off by the thoughtless amatonormativity of the genre as a whole.

I am also waffling over the presentation of the QP relationships because I feel like people are going to read them as inherently romantic because we have been conditioned by the disneyfied amatonormativity of our media culture to see all dedicated partnerships as inherently romantic, and that’s always gonna annoy the shit out of me. /end grumpy aro rant
