Seems to be common practice, actually- to not have it. i've visited several other buildings and there's been no sight of it.

which is... strange? if i think about it, it's surprising that i haven't encountered it yet! it sort of makes sense to have them together, you know? considering that temperature is so vital to a snake's perception of the world. and how sensitive reptiles are to temperature fluctuations.

so there's a lot of control to be had here. can you imagine controlling someone's energy level just by adjusting the thermostat? er- well, i guess we already do that. but imagine you put yakumo in an ice bath and he immediately falls asleep. brumation happens instantly now, sorry. and the only way to snap him out of it is to stick a flaming dildo up his ass

what?. no, i mean, restore his regular energy level with a soft warm-up. a heated blanket and a gentle steam. hahaha.

people plunge themselves into ice water before jumping into hot tubs and vice versa- for fun! they do this recreationally!! they call it a "spa treatment" and pay a premium for it! what's wrong with giving yakumo a spa treatment? who are we to deprive him of such sensory luxury?

i'm JUST SAYING that since he naturally gravitates toward heat, you could put him in a hurt AND comfort scenario he could be naked and cold, banished to the distant corner of the room.. but when you offer him a source of warmth, whether that be a hot rock or a warm hand or 20 lit candles suspended above him dripping wax on him at random intervals,,, wouldn't he have a tough time turning down your generosity?

i mean, he certainly would if he was tied up.

see, here's the other thing i cannot quite comprehend-- it's that--- how has a snake yokai not featured bondage scenes yet? i guess there was that one time with the.. hm. no, we shan't talk about the cellar. besides, ONLY ONE TIME is unacceptable for a sentient rope!! although yakumo would love to wrap up his prey and squeeze the cum out of em, i feel like we're missing out on a lot by not OutSnaking the Snake. tie up and restrain the Restrainer. it's just a liiiiittle step farther than putting him in a pillowcase! so mild!!!!

here's a guy who is always worried about losing control/// about being free to wreak havoc on his loved ones, despite his best intentions. so how about we give him a moment of peace? a moment where he believes he's subdued and unable to cause harm? just tie him up! keep him under TIGHT lock and key. (if he's not terrified at his loss of sight, then i guess his pit organs are functioning . in which case, the blindfold doesn't really need to stay on. if he IS terrified and feels the loss of visuals acutely, this would be an excellent opportunity to soak in his panic. just for a bit though. we're not so cruel. guide him back with a warm touch. see? playing with fire temperature contrasts can bring such relief!)

maybe i'm getting ahead of myself. i don't expect yakumo temperature play to show up WITH bondage , why- that would be asking a lot, right?

but the basics are simple enough, yes? give the wretched creature the comforting warmth he wants, then perhaps inch closer to something bordering uncomfortable? Too Much? have him seek out what he craves, only to be burned (metaphorically and/or literally) if he indulges himself too much? oops! someone's become a slave to their senses!

i'm just saying that the sensory perception of yokai vs kink is (relatively) unknown territory. if temperature play already messes with humans, what could it possibly do to yakumo? he could experience it in facets unknown to others.-=- to levels others are incapable of appreciating---- like someone with synesthesia who can experience music with another layer of enjoyment.

if you give a snake ice cream, followed by a hot piece of meat [unknown origin], it'll really make him aware of the contrast, hmm??????

anyway. sorry about that. i'm not super clear on the specifics of it all. i just thought it peculiar that i haven't seen the yaku-hot-cold-sensitivity-finagling. out there, in here, nowhere as far as i've seen..

Walpurgisnacht and how it ties it all together

So what is Walpurgisnacht?

Walpurgisnacht is a once a season fanservice event. It's a story thing with light character development. It's a banner with functionally an entire new rarity of ID. It's a game mode meant to demonstrate the power of those new IDs. It is a massive money maker for the company. And I believe it is kinda sorta the thing endgame players will align their behavior around.

That's a big claim at the end there, but I'll try to explain.

The key thing to focus on is the banner and the units that come with it. Walpurgis IDs are unique in that they are only available to purchase during a Walpurgisnacht, with the banner IDs being completely unpurchasable the first time they show up. Yes, you need to win the latest hype units from the Gacha or wait 4 months to buy them. These IDs are powerful, and, as this is a fanservice event tend to be referencing some of the coolest shit in PM's universe.

Needless to say demand is high while "supply" is dictated by a 1.5% drop chance or a 200 pull pity. This is pretty normal for a gacha, but a radical departure for Limbus, and it has some serious consequences on how we think about resources.

So in my last post I went over how Limbus' gacha after a certain point isn't worth it, and it ends up being mathematically better to convert premium currency to stamina to just grind out the units you want. There are several extremally important caveats to that statement, and the biggest one is Walpurgisnacht. I want to address that point here.

You want pulls for this, because you can't buy the unit until months after its arrived and you'll probably want it now. This changes how you might think about refreshing stamina, because you want to stockpile currency for a big pull session every 4 months. Counterintuitively, you want a lot of shards if you're new to buy the old Walpurgisnacht stuff, as unless the game powercreeps to hell and back a lot of these will be good forever (Regret Meursault EGO fundamentally changes how we think about his IDs and gameplay in perpetuity).

If we math it out (and use vague estimates so this doesn't become a wall of numbers), you can get 100 pulls from purely weekly Lunacy gains between Walpurgisnachts, but that number decreases for every refresh you do. if you refresh once every day, you're down to 85 pulls, and further down to 26 pulls if you double refresh. Ouch. However. there are other sources of pulls than just the 750 a week, and they add up substantially.

All of which is to say it's probably better to only do a single refresh to save pulls for Walpurgis, but if you do double refresh you will still have the ability to pull on this and maybe get the Banner ID.

But there's one other aspect to Walpurgis that has been met with some apprehension by the community, but makes me wonder at PMs intentions for the late game experience.

Gacha Announcers.

So Limbus has a system for Combat Announcers, There's no gameplay advantage for this, it's just to have your favorite characters comment on how bad you're playing, a nice little bonus reward that's easy to do if the VA is in the studio.

Walpurgisnacht slightly changed that, in that it added 2 Announcers to the Walpurgis gacha pool, Malkuth and Pierre/Jack. Malkuth is a major character from both Lobotomy Corporation and Library of Ruina and a fan favorite; the response to her being available was... significant. Pierre/Jack are also here. The Announcers are very rare (1.3%), and cannot be purchased, but are Pitiable (Malkuth most of all, heyyo). They take their rarity from the filler pulls, so nothing is actually lost as far as odds goes.

A big sticking point is you can roll dupe Announcers as they aren't removed from the pool like EGO, and many are upset they might not get Malkuth and instead the other guys. Undeniably that sucks, it's probably rare to save up 200 pulls for the pity and it might feel like a waste. But this decision also propelled Limbus on Steam's top 10 seller charts for the day, so PM rang in the new year with a smashing success of sales. It's also unclear if we can purchase the Announcers later, so that also is driving some fomo.

So that might seem bad, but one interesting thing is that dupe announcers give a lot of thread, 50 crates worth. Thread is the primary currency for upgrades and at endgame you want thousands of the stuff.

This creates this image to me of what an endgame player looks like, and I wonder if it's intentional. They have all or most of the game's available IDs and are now just spending Lunacy to stamina refresh to grind more boxes or thread or exp or w/e. That person now gets a second Thread bomb from Walpurgis separate from the seasonal turnover Thread bomb, which is the primary restriction of end game. I'm probably reaching here, but there's a logic to this that makes sense to me.

That's about all for Walpurgisnacht, but there's a couple other things I think are neat.

One, the game becoming one where you hoard gacha currency for a big dump to hit pity every 4 months is hilariously normal for this genre, albeit we actually get all the units.

Second, community engagement spikes with this as we get classic gacha posts like:

"Hey I just got every relevant unit in a single 10 pull, how wacky is that?" "150 pulls and nothing, it's so fucking over" "Can I get this unit in 3 single pulls? If not game sucks and devs are @%$#." "I STOLE MY MOM'S CREDIT CARD WE ARE SO FUCKING BACK"

So Valve (Steam) is currently facing an anti-trust lawsuit regarding their position as a monopoly in the PC gaming market, and there was recently an update in the case which has spurred me to share my thoughts because I think it bears a more nuanced discussion than I've seen in most places.

The core of the lawsuit comes down to two issues that are being framed as only possible because of Steams position as a monopoly:

Steam takes a 30% cut of sales on the platform. This is, allegedly, too much and an extortionate rate.

Steam has a policy that says that you can't sell your game for a cheaper price than what it's listed for on Steam on any other storefront. This applies regardless of whether you are selling steam keys, or selling the game in any other form. This is allegedly a way to quash competition and protect their status as a monopoly.

Regarding point one, nah. Steam taking 30% isn't unreasonable. A big reason to publish on Steam is that your game gets access to so many features via the Steam infrastructure, like achievements, rebindable controls (outside of your game via the Steam client), online connectivity/hosting/matchmaking through the Steam network, remote play, cloud storage for saves, etc. Those 30% pay for a lot of extra value for both developer and consumer. This is not an issue.

Point two is where things get a little wonky. Specifically because their policy applies to both steam keys and any other forms the game can be sold in.

With all the additional value having your game on the Steam platform provides, it makes perfect sense that you can't sell Steam keys cheaper elsewhere because that means Steam would be paying for all those features (as well as hosting, bandwidth for downloads, etc) without making any money. That's not reasonable to expect.

But, if a developer wants to make a version of their game that has none of those features, that does not connect to any of Valves services or servers, that is a "stripped down" version of their game without all these extras - why shouldn't they be able to sell that cheaper elsewhere? It's kind of like selling a premium and a budget version of the same product, and if Steam/Valve doesn't incur any costs from people buying and using the budget version, why should they have a say?

That's where I think the issue with Steams policy lies, and that's where a lawsuit like this could bring positive change for the market.

Cognitive brand associations: National cuisines

This week's class and reading made me think about cognitive brand associations between national cuisines. In particular, (and perhaps prompted by the reading on wine), I wanted to discuss the notion that European cuisines are seen as "high-brow" and certain other cuisines as "low brow"/ cheaper.

Ratings obviously play a bit of a role in building prestige of a cuisine. Of the 144 restaurants that have earned 3 Michelin stars, 62% of them are in Europe, 9% in the USA with 29% in Asia. I distinctly remember being really excited to eat at a 3 star Michelin restaurant in Paris, and being fully okay with the very expensive bill that came after. And yet, when I went to a Michelin starred restaurant in Singapore, I found myself more critical of the food I was eating, judging it for its value-for-money ratio.

As someone who has grown up eating a lot of good, cheap, Asian food, I find myself torn between the expectation that Asian food be cheap and delicious and the aspiration for my culture to be represented in a premium way.

In his book The Ethnic Restauranteur, the author (Krishnendu Ray) hypothesizes that the "more capital or military power a nation wields and the richer its emigrants are, the more likely its cuisine will command high menu prices". In a way, our perception of a cuisine has been nudged by social proof, the cuisine we see immigrants eating and making cheaply, we have continued to perceive as low brow. Even long after those original waves of immigration have passed, our perception of the cuisine could lead us to color our perception of cultures and stereotypes, perpetuating the cycle.

France has cultivated such a strong brand that they have managed to make even the simple somehow seem luxurious. Eggs? Fold them a particular way, and all of a sudden, I'm happy to fork out $25 for a mushroom omelette.  French toast was a cooking method to extend the life of stale bread, and now, it is a fancy brunch entrée. And yet, I only want to pay $5 for a breakfast scallion pancake and $3 for a steamed red bean bun (my preferred Chinese breakfast foods). The raw ingredient costs of both the French and Chinese breakfast don't differ much, but the cognitive association we have with French food (and perhaps just French words) increases our willingness to pay.

Dumplings and ravioli are also another key example. Imagine if I only got 4 dumplings for $30, I would be outraged because I would be expecting at least 12 if not more. And yet, I an often happy to receive 4-6 ravioli for that same price.

This exercise has made me realize that I should myself be more critical about my default expectations for cuisines. I shouldn't always expect to be able to get a bargain on Chinese food; instead, I should be proud when I see more high-end Asian establishments. Cognitive brand associations are there, but I think they should also be able to be challenged and changed. And when it comes to food, the proof really should be in the pudding.

Gotta nail the kickstarter for Act 2 first BECAUSE apparently when you give out Steam keys on KS they don't count towards your review score, so any Steam store stuff *has* to happen *after* I've fulfilled everything in the kickstarter

So I'm gonna either: Get Act 1 in beta and launch it on Steam after the KS succeeds (*just* the paid/premium version - the regular/freebie will still be on itchio), then update the game with Acts 2 & 3 as it goes, OR:

Release Acts 1, 2, and 3 when they're in beta all in one chunk on steam
