It's truly puzzling why many news outlets seem surprised by the success of Helldivers 2. As someone who thoroughly enjoyed the first game, I can attest to its addictive replayability and the thrill of working towards a collective goal of reclaiming the galaxy. The dynamic difficulty levels of planets, offering better rewards for greater challenges, kept players engaged and motivated.
Comparing the first game's peak player count of 6,744 on PC to the staggering 81,840 concurrent players that Helldivers 2 achieved on its launch day, it's evident that there was a strong foundation of interest in the franchise. While the first game had a more arcade-like feel with its top-down view, the transition to a third-person perspective in Helldivers 2 aligns well with the current gaming landscape dominated by titles like Call of Duty and Horde-based games such as Warhammer's Space Marine or Vermintide.
However, it's worth noting that Helldivers 2 hasn't been without its challenges. The inclusion of Nprotect Gameguard as an anti-cheat measure has drawn criticism from some fans, with claims that it's the cheapest and most insecure rootkit anti-cheat on the market.
