“Not everyone is out to get you.”

The first time those words were said, Minghao had you pressed against the wall in a hidden corridor of the art gallery away from prying eyes. A hand was temptingly placed on your hip only inches above the slit that ran up the side of your sleek black dress. His lips were curled in a smug grin and hovered daringly in front of yours, staring at you with those smoldering brown irises.

You let him lean in as close as he dared, relishing in the undeniable power play that constantly flipped between the two of you. It was like a scale swinging back and forth between two entities, never staying on one side for too long. There could never be a balance between you and Minghao for it was that exact rush of adrenaline keeping you two at each other’s throats.

It should’ve been yours. The throngs of people that had flocked to the art gallery more than two hours before the event started all wound up in front of your painting. Murmurs of appreciation and awe for your masterpiece — and you — could be heard even above the rapid clicks of the cameras. Dressed to the nines, you still maintained a modest smile despite the insurmountable amount of pride you rightfully felt.

That was until he appeared.

Dressed as if he’d just left an intense make-out session and hadn’t bothered to straighten his collar, Minghao still managed to look tasteful. Taking off his obnoxious aviator sunglasses and twirling them, he had the courtesy to gaze at your painting before acknowledging your presence with a quirk of his eyebrow. Tonguing the inside of his cheek, he sauntered away, effectively encouraging the chattering crowd to follow him to the center of the gallery where his painting was displayed in all its colorful glory.

You felt a chilling coldness settle in your bones. It wasn’t from the sudden lack of attention. No. It was the numbing sensation of loss as the dean handed Minghao a gold-encrusted envelope. There was no doubt what it contained and with a swish of your skirts and clack of your heels, you stalked away from where the Golden Boy was surrounded in all of his glory. Shining brighter than the flashes that were aggressively going off to memorialize his acceptance.

It was only seconds later that he came after you.

That was how you two ended up in this position, not that it was anything new. The push-and-pull, a cat-and-mouse game, the predator and its prey. Now just who was who?

“Running away already, [Y/N]? That’s so unlike you.”

“What do you want, Minghao?”

“You.”

Threading your fingers through his long brown locks to gently tug at them only seemed to encourage the man to close the gap between your lips. You heard Minghao’s breath hitch slightly at the way you caressed the side of his face and just when his eyes were almost closed as he wet his lips, you used the palm of your hand to shove him away.

Stumbling to the side with curses as colorful as the art surrounding you, the way he staggered to catch his balance almost made it look like you had slapped him. In fact, the mini triumph you felt was enough to take just the edge off the pulsating anger burning within.

“What the — ”

“Not everyone is out to get you,” you hissed. “Most of all, me.”

Minghao rubbed his neck with a frown on his face. “I know that… I know that very well.”

“Then stop messing around.”

“Well, gee, thought you’d want me to be distracted.”

“I want you to be serious.”

“I am serious,” he stated a strange conviction and eyes that held an indecipherable emotion. “I’m more serious than I’ve ever been.”

You could hear the footsteps of the journalists as they rushed to find out where the star painter of the night had disappeared. There were only a few minutes before someone accidentally stumbled upon the two of you.

“Good, then prove it. Get so serious so I can take you down while you’re at the top of your game.”

With that bold threat, you figured your time was almost up. Full of a mix of emotions, you rushed out towards the main area, missing the way Minghao watched you with a lopsided smile as a rookie columnist burst out of nowhere calling his name.

“Not everyone is out to get you.”

The next time you said those words, it had a very different context. This time it was Minghao running his hands through his own hair. If you had cared, you would’ve been worried he might tear it through his exasperation.

It was awkward. The both of you were stuck in a confined space days before the final competition of your last semester. Tensions were already high between the two of you on a normal basis but it was getting progressively worse, especially since that last time. That’s probably why the art club had “accidentally” locked you in the art supplies closet. It was a makeshift get-along t-shirt since they’ve still failed to buy one after all these years.

“They all want me to suffer. I’m sure Hoshi’s laughing so hard right now.”

“Yes, it’s insufferable and so are they but I’ve barely said but two words to you so it can’t be that bad. Besides, I’m not the one that’s put a dent in the door — you’re going to have to pay for that you know?”

“I’m already paying for it. All of my sins, right here. Right now.”

You rolled your eyes, opting to fall silent again. Minghao only complained the more you talked to him and you realized he could indeed be a drama king.

Little did you know, he was having a hard time not going crazy being surrounded by your gentle, flowery perfume filling the small space. A sharp contrast to your prickly attitude.

“I hate them. They hate me. Everyone’s out to get me. Like I’m not already having a hard enough time as it is.”

“Not everyone is out to get you,” you sighed, “only I am. Those fools love you too much to have it out for you.”

A small smile relaxed his tense form. “You’re right. They set this up because they love me.”

“Yeah, whatever… pretty sure they’re just tired of walking on eggshells. So… shall we call a truce?”

You stuck out your hand only for him to frown.

“A truce?”

“… I know you’ve been struggling with all the expectations from the school. Doesn’t mean I’m not still determined to take your crown this round but I want to win against your best. And if that means putting aside our differences until the comp, I’m willing to alleviate the pressure on my end.”

Minghao’s mouth was open before it curved into a lazy smirk. “Wow… does that mean you’ll finally go on a date with me?”

You heard the click of the door unlock and then giggling whispers.

“Do it, say yes [Y/N].”

“You know you want to, come on!”

“He’s been asking you out for years now.”

“Hao painted that stupid cactus because he said it reminded him of you.”

“Y’all are so whipped for each other, you don’t even realize it.”

“Please just go out already. Please. I’m begging you. Lord above, please bless us — ”

“Okay, fine! Fine!” You threw your hands up in irritation before pointing your finger at a rather flustered Minghao. “One date. That’s it. Then all of you leave me alone!”

Recovering quite quickly, always ever the cool one, your very attractive archnemesis wrapped his hand around your still-pointed one. With a coy grin, he maneuvered it so you were in a handshake, sealing the truce proposed before.

“I’ll accept as many truces as you offer if you go on a date with me in exchange.”

“Tch. You’d better not get soft and let me win. I still want to fight fair and square.”

“Yeah, yeah. Whatever you say, cutie.”

“Minghao!”
