So ive been cooking up an epic the musical/life series au in my head for a bit and i want to share some of the thoughts - warning for epic spoilers n such
It started with imagining joel as odysseus (and naturally lizzie as penelope) and then i got the idea of him almost traveling through the different seasons of the life series but theyre all melting and blending together, and mayhaps the winners all have key rolls (i havent figured all of them out yet)
Going of this, grian is eurylochus and jimmy is polites - some bad boys crumbs but also polites death being jims canary curse (before it was broken) and eurylochus' mutiny could be visualized in a certain cactus ring
Another point for eury grian is i have scar as circe (charisma 100 fr) and hes the only one who didnt get lured (i hear a faint scar put your clothes back on in the distance)
More on scar, i picture circes island as a mix of magic mountain (with joel and scars connection with it), trader scars (being the front circe pulls to lure the crew in and adds to the winners being key characters with motifs of their season), and the jellie panda reserve (either as the nymphs he has to protect or turns men into pandas or maybe a mix of both) - i imagine in joel and scars confrontation here they look like the wizards (even tho they started as bad boy joel and secret life scar)
Next i matched up athena with gem because of the 2 fast 2 furious alliance and also yknow geminislay, listen i just had a vision of joel at his wits end stuck on calypsos island calling out to gem ok
I dont really have the other winners matched up concretely but i have seen someone pair scott with posideon which is funny and also works with his connection to water (and joels vendetta against him lmao) and i can see a connection with the vibes of posideon wanting revenge for his son and widow scott but idk still, posideon could also be martyn cause it thematically matches with the season he won in? - I also have pearl as potentially scylla, if nothing else because the visuals would slap, ive also thought about her as ares cause the parallels of gem being a more calculated warrior and (5am) pearl being more chaos and emotion also slaps
Speaking of ares i also had a really funny idea of tango being ares and skizz being aphrodite, mixing the heart foundation with tangos iconic rage (i probably wont go this route but lol imagine) - ive also pictured impulse as hephestus because of the line "trust is not given its forged" just gives me all the impulse (and that goddamn clock) thoughts frfr
Anyway this is getting long so ill leave it here, id love to here yalls thoughts and match ups btw

So like, everyone, there's probably something coming up
Several people have changed their skin to default/life series. Several have delayed streams. Not all! But still
I firmly believe that something life series specifically is coming up.
I think a whole new series this soon is unlikely
So I think they're a) making a funny unserious life series, maybe with the new April fool's update, which I wouldn't be surprised they got early(hence why people are changing into their skins). Or b) Scott is doing an April fool's escape room with life series members
Both of these are supported by Scott wearing his double life green skin
Or they are fucking with us idk
Edit: I am searching through namemc, grian is in his original skin, Cleo is in their life series one, Scott as mentioned, pearl in her default one same with gem
They are all people I'd expect in Scott's escape, except Cleo. I don't recall them participating before, but they did get along well in the life series so who knows
Edit two and(technically three but whatever) impulse is here too!
Edit three: now with Jimmy and Lizzie, I don't watch sos but I've seen they have skins there
Edit four: Bdubs hasn't changed his skin yet, neither did rendog
Also according to a comment(thank you!)
"Imagine this is good practice for the life series" - Tango to Etho, stream right now, while they're messing with auto-crafters and TNT minecarts
Edit five: to add to others postponing their streams(impulse and pearl I believe?) cleo also did the same wtf
Edit 6: scar has since put on his grey skin, that appeared when season 10 started, and also put on his red life skin from Double life
What??? Is this a double life rerun?
Edit 7: impulse changed back into his cyberpunk skin, maybe I am overreacting but I think it's Joever
Same with pearl
Edit 8: Scott has also changed back, not everyone has, but I think this means they finished recording. I think the fact they had it for more than 2 hours means it wasn't just for the thumbnail or something
Also this is the last update unless something big happens

I like putting characters in scenarios so what if everyone went camping ? Maybe in the undercity because I need to add gem and impulse in this head cannon or I will explode
Ren,doc, etho, katherine, and Shelby would be the only ones who are actually setting up the tents or getting wood for fire.they are the most helpful.Katherine would also be the one to schedule the trip.
We would then have gem, pearl, and impulse trying to start a fire to cook some soup in which turns out to be very ineffective.poor gem had to bring all those pots of soup only for everyone to eat sandwiches for the lack of a efficient fire.
Martyn and Scott would definitely be trying to prank each other instead of setting up tents or planning. It would definitely go something like Scott puts a bunch of water balloons in martyns sleeping bag and then it turns to Martyn planting fake spiders on Scott's stuff.either way these two are the least helpful.
Jimmy maybe would parent Scott around half the time but the other half he would get scared about all the creatures in the forest (even if probably the scariest creature they would meet end up being a bird)
Grian and scar would definitely have their little desert duo moment and wander off and just chillax and talk about schoolwork n stuff.
Zed and Tango would be half setting up their tent and half worrying about if the tent would catch on fire.zed would definitely spray the entire camp in heat protectant if he can but katherine would be like "just spray the tent only everything's gonna be fine!" Spoiler alert - everything was not fine
We'd also have Joel and lizzie arrive an hour late because they could not get the directions right and because lizzie took forever to pack.Lizzie and Joel were probably the least helpful getting to the camp literally minutes after everyone was done setting up but atleast they brought some delicious cakes n stuff to eat besides some stale old sandwiches
These are just my headcannons by the way but yeah !!
Awww I LOVE these it’s like the kayaking one! It’s so funny! I’m so glad everyone agrees that Martyn and Scott have this very strange blend of sibling energy with like angsty exes energy it’s hilarious. Joel and Lizzie to the rescue with baked goods as always! Thank you for sharing! 💖

⚠️ THIS IS A FAN BLOG! SCAR DOESN'T HAVE TUMBLR! ⚠️
Well hello there, my fellow miners and crafters! Scar here, as you all know already.
See, I saw how everyone had these really cool mailboxes and were having so much fun, and I just felt a little lonely. So, with help from Lizzie and a young Messenger who offered to deliver my letters, I tidied up my run-down, snail infested (I wonder who did that?) mailbox and now I'm good to go!
Hermits and Lifers' Mailbox Addresses:
@joels-mailbox @grians-mailbox @docs-mailbox @scotts-mailbox @mumbos-mailbox @jimmys-mailbox @ethos-mailbox @pearls-mailbox @itlw-mailbox @skizzles-mailbox @lizzies-mailbox @tangos-mailbox @rendogs-mailbox @docs-mailbox @impulses-mailbox @bigbs-mailbox @gems-mailbox @bdubs-mailbox @xisumavoids-mailbox @cleos-mailbox @jimmys-mailbox @joehills-mailbox
Other Mailboxes:
@npgs-mailbox @grumbots-mailbox @player-42 @sausages-mailbox @hermes-mailbox @eyesremain @triviabots-mailbox
And, of course, our a-may-zing DM, @sincerely-some-guy! (read on: #hermitbox lore)
General Letter Information, Lore Explanations, About the Messenger and Tags Below!
Hi, I'm Arto (@artooftheghosts)! I help manage letters to and from Scar---basically the Messenger. AKA, I manage this blog!
To get this out of the way, I am VERY behind on lore. Very. I'm not even halfway through Season 9, and not fully caught up, so please spare me lore wise! Otherwise, in this mailbox, Scar remembers everything. I also only started watching Scar a month or two ago and am OBSESSED with Life Series and Hermitcraft, so I hope I can keep up with lore letters!
I also totally get that not all my responses might fully be in character, and I'm really sorry about that! I assure you I'm trying my best.
[If you see text in brackets like this, it'll be the Messenger, Arto, talking. Scar gave me permission to read the letters and add my own little notes. Often, I'll also use tags for OOC stuff!]
TAGS!
#hermitcraft mailbox ask universe: our main tag for all mailboxes!
#gtwscars mailbox: this mailbox's main tag.
# s mailbox: any other mailboxes' tags that we've interacted with (ex: mumbos mailbox).
#hermitbox lore: any lore-related storylines. Often run by @sincerely-some-guy and somewhat like a DND session… not all mailboxes are involved!
#anon mail: all ask related letters. It says anon, but any asks not from mailboxes go here.
LORE TAGS SPECIFICALLY!
#pale garden phenomenon:
Fan lore surrounding Guy (@sincerely-some-guy), a mysterious amnesiac elf trapped by the watchers, whose friends are the crafters and the crows. Mostly wholesome, but with some dark sides and secrets to be unlocked.
Status: ONGOING
CHAPTER 1 | CHAPTER 2 | TO BE CONTINUED...
#hermitbox42:
Fan lore surrounding Player42, aka ILLUX (@player-42). Meant to be eerie and psychologically unnerving, but an amazing plotline. Related to Pale Garden Phenomenon.
Status: PROLOGUE STAGE
Nothing to catch up on yet...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NSFW asks are strongly discouraged, but borderline is alright if you're REALLY dying to ask. Keep in mind that the Messenger [AKA ME!] is by no means an adult and they do read these! If we see your letter and feel rather uncomfortable answering it, we won't answer, sorry! Ships are totally allowed, but this is also not a shipping blog. Silly little fluff ships are super cute, but nothing more than that.
THANKS FOR READING!

goood day! hope you're doing splendid
if you have the time, would you mind explaining a bit of the lore of your au so far? I'm very interesting in lot of mechanics of aus, and apart from whatever bits you've dropped about the gang and what they're upto, is there any specifics you'd like to add on as a note? this isn't about spoilers, and if doing so might reveal some then it's completely understandable!
I'm really interested in how your story progresses and if not the above, id love to hear what you think so far about it and what you think of the thoughts of people, like their interpretations if have any! thank you for taking the time for this and its completely fine if you don't want to answer
apologies if I came off as rude or too assuming, and for the rather long ask ahah
thank you again! have a great day or night ahead! take care
Hey thank you so much for dropping this in my inbox!! You taking interest warms my heart!
I'm gonna use this ask as a means to drop these headshots and notes. Below is every person who currently resides at the repurposed logging yard. They call themselves the Hermits. All of these people will appear at least once in the comic, and I'm going to do my best to include these little bits of info within the actual story too!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Other members of traffic/life smp will also appear, they just aren't associated with the group established here. So Scott, Lizzie, Jimmy, Martyn, Bigb, Scar and Grian are going to make an appearance later.
As for the setting, we're 2 years into the apocalypse at this point. There are safe guarded cities, but these places are far away from where the story is taking place. The Hermits have pretty much been living their lives completely isolated from other people as a means of keeping safe.
Weather in this universe can be a bit extreme, as the world faces an imminent climate crisis a few years before the zombies start appearing inexplicably. Space stations were in the midst of being established before the apocalypse, with hopes that humanity could reestablish itself in outer space. When it hit, much of the remaining human race was evacuated from the planet as a last ditch effort. The status of the shuttles that were sent up is unknown. The stations being set up really weren't ready to be inhabited so soon, so its kind of iffy whether or not things are going much better up there.
Early into the apocalypse, helicopters would fly overhead looking for survivors and escort them back to safe zones and launch sites. This stopped not long after though, and whether or not they're going to start looking for survivors again is unknown.
As for the zombies themselves, the 'science' behind them is beyond anyone's understanding. Upon being bitten, the body instantaneously progresses through the stages of decomposition and takes on a sickly kind of bruised look. As far as any one can tell, there is no brain activity beyond this point, but the bodies still move inexplicably. Kind of a night of the living dead situation. Important to note that much like a human, if the heart or brain is destroyed they will die, despite not having a functioning nervous or circulatory system. I'm taking a distinctly supernatural approach to them because I just think it's cool.
I have no clue what year this is set in, but the Hermits are residing in the wilderness somewhere in Canada. I'll touch on pretty much all the above within the comic as well, but I thought there was no harm in sharing anyhow because you asked so nicely!
As for the second half, people have said a couple interesting things. Sadly I can't comment on a lot of it because it dips into spoilers! Somebody said they find it funny that Bdubs is probably freaking out while Etho is just chilling and that's absolutely spot on and made me laugh.
Thanks for such a detailed ask, anon! And thanks for your patience, I had to think about what I wanted to say ^_^ Hopefully this is what you were looking for, hope you have a fantastic day!

Tailored to Your Liking
Chapter 8
[First] [prev]
Summary: Tumble Town attracts all sorts of misfits looking for a fresh start on the frontier, but everyone still needs clothes. Be it extra limbs or high temperatures, Jimmy caters to every hybrid's needs.
Ships: Jimmy/Tango (slow burn romantic), Grian/Mumbo/Scar (romantic), Joel/Lizzie (romantic)
Warnings: Implied traumatic events, awkward flirting
The air was thick with smog, arid landscape rushing past at incredible speeds, and the tracks roared below. Tango hung on for dear life as he leaned over the edge to see in front of the train. A whistle went off. He nearly jumped up to his death. The engineer gave him a wide grin, eyes shining through his thick glasses while the snakes that had braided themselves atop his head glared at him.
“You ought to be more careful, sweetface.” He teased. “She doesn’t like little creatures hanging off her sides. We have a brush for that!”
Tango rolled his eyes. “Who’s the one that basically built her, Keralis? It’s fine. I just need to…”
“Get a good view?”
Everything went dark, engulfed in a tunnel among the uneven terrain. It whipped by in seconds and Tango was nearly thrown by the flood of light as it opened onto the sight brightly striped mesa walls and golden shrubs. At the heart of it sat a town, not nearly as little as it was when Tango last saw it. Even still, the water tower still stood heads and tails above everything else, even the no-longer-so-new train station rapidly coming into view.
Tango took a deep breath, willing his heart to stop pounding so heavily. Keralis eyed him with a knowing look. “Almost home?” He asked with wide smile.
The train began to slow beneath them, every mechanism Tango had carefully drawn out dancing as it should. Tango closed his eyes, taking another deep breath. “I hope so...”
There was a small crowd at the station, some passengers waiting to get on, some companions looking for family and friends. XB coordinated the transfer seamlessly, only a small twitch in his fins indicating his impatience to return to the cover of the train. Tango couldn’t blame him. Tumble Town may be run by a fellow merfolk but it wasn’t exactly ideal with its dusty breeze and beating sun. Tango grabbed his bags and slipped off the engine, circumventing the crowd. Only a few faces among them were familiar, even fewer glancing at him with recognition. There was only one person among them Tango sought out, though.
“Tango!”
His head twisted, tail on end, before he broke out into a huge grin. He dropped his bags and open his arms wide just in time as blond curls and curly horns engulfed his vision. Zedaph managed to lift him full body off the platform. “You’re here!” He shrieked excitedly. “You’re really back!”
“I’m here!” He agreed, hugging his old friend.
Once he was back on solid ground Zed stepped away looked him over. “Look at you, you’ve barely changed these past three years! Same hair, same clothes, same ugly mug-”
“Hey!” He laughed.
Zed ignored his protests, instead patting his belly, “Somehow even skinnier than before, too! Were you always this skin and bones? I’ll have to tell Impulse and Skizz to add some lard to the stew, fatten you back up!”
He huffed, pushing his friend away. “I’m not a cow going for slaughter.”
“You might as well be.”
And that was likely more true than Tango hoped. So, he changed the subject, “How’ve you been? How’s the town?”
It wasn’t the subtlest, clear from the look Zed gave him, but the ramling played along anyways. They picked up Tango’s bags and began to walk. “Fine, fine. It’s so much busier than it ever used to be with the rail passing through. Fwhip is pleased, Doc is not. I’m partial to agreeing with Doc on the matter, they scare away all the critters!”
“You sure it’s them scaring them?” Tango joked, which got him a shove.
“I am, thank you very much!”
Though the town had grown in size it still felt the same. Perhaps that was because, in the grand scheme of town construction, two years wasn’t especially long. It was sill little old Tumble Town. Barely any two story buildings except main street where all the business were, and Lizzie’s manor at the end of it. More hybrids ran around than Tango had ever seen even in the big cities, and along with them a bit of an eclectic construction style to accommodate them. The roads were still dirt and the only light posts were around the mayoral office.
It had changed, but it still made his heart warm.
They reached Impulse’s bar soon enough, and the regulars were a much more familiar crowd to Tango. Skizz lifted his mug to him with a huge grin, “Hey buddy, welcome back!” Which caught the attention of the rest of the patrons, who followed suit. Among them was Scar, who raised his cane instead.
“Tango, my big city man!”
“Hardly.” Tango sat down between the two, with Impulse already in front of him with a plate of food and comforting smile. “I’m glad to be out of there for a while. City folk are the most unfriendly people I’ve ever met no matter where I go.”
“Well, it’s hard to compete when you’ve experienced Tumble Town!” Said Scar, which got a round of mild cheers from the bar goers around them. “Happiest place on earth, don’t you know?”
Tango grinned, “You got me there.” Then he began to dig into his food.
Mild chatter echoed around him, asking about his work or telling him about some ridiculous thing that happened. It was almost perfect. A familiar bar, good friends and food and drink, laughter and teasing abound. It was warm and comforting and every good thing one could want. It was truly…
Well, it was almost.
“So,” Impulse started, caution in his voice that immediate sobered the whole group. “When are you gonna…?”
“That’s the question, ain’t it?” Tango groaned, leaning back to look at the ceiling rather than face his friends’ wary looks. His claws wrapped around his necklace, the ends of the feathers slightly frayed from playing with it too much. It’d frequently been his only comfort on the most stressful and soul crushing days of work.
“You just gotta go, buddy.” A large hand patted him on the back.
He knew that, of course, but it didn’t make it any less intimidating. He glanced back over his friends, “Y’mind if I leave my bags here? Just in case.”
“You always got a place here.” Impulse assured, then made a shooing motion. “Now get going before it gets dark.”
Tango didn’t need to be told twice. If he stopped to wait for it he’d simply never go. He saluted goodbye to his friends and made his way down Main Street. It was quieter now, leaving an all too familiar building well within view the whole walk. A few hanging plants had been placed and there was a new sign in the window, but like everything else it had remained mostly the same.
He took a deep breath and went in.
The bell on the door jingled the same jingle it had the first time Tango was there. Fabrics were strewn about the workshop, a sign of mid-project Tango had come to learn. One long piece of cotton was left hanging from the sewing machine, a new model he’d seen often in the city. The one Tango had made was pushed against the wall behind it between button drawers. A little brass bird sat atop it.
Soft yellow feathers shook slightly in acknowledgement of the bell, shielding the man hunched over a pattern from view. “Yes, give me just a minute!”
“Guess one more couldn’t hurt.”
Jimmy stiffened, feathers raised on end. There was a moment, then his head shot up, wide eyes locking on Tango, who shrunk down between his his shoulders with an awkward smile. Like everything else Jimmy was left of familiar, his hair longer, a new scar on his jaw, a slight bit of stubble left unclear whether it was intentional or just between shaves, and an unbuttoned blue vest Tango had never seen before. But it was still the same warm brown eyes and sharp nose, same well-preened buttery yellow feathers and copious freckles.
If he could sweat he imagined he would be as he waited for any further reaction from the shocked avian.
His brow knit, nose scrunching up as he spun around fully. “Are you kidding me?” He snapped, making Tango jump and his tail curl around his leg. The avian marched up to him, “You can’t even send a letter to tell me you’re coming? Let me just look like this for when you arrive?” His wings jerked with his hands in emphasis to his appearance.
Tango wasn’t given time to reply, yanked forward into a bone-crushing hug. The sparks in his hair immediately settled along with the feathers in Jimmy’s wings. Jimmy’s nose burrowed into the crook of Tango’s neck. He smiled, relaxing completely into the hug and weaving his own arms just under Jimmy’s wings. “Look like what? Handsome? Perfect?” He teased.
“Oh, shush!” The avian’s voice warbled, tightening his hold. Tango thought he might let go then, but he remained, and Tango let him. What simultaneously felt like an eternity and only a second passed in comfortable silence. Only the smallest chirps interrupted. His eyes fell closed, and the slightest rumble emanated from his chest.
Finally, Jimmy very reluctantly pulled back. His breath was shaky as he refused to completely detach from the blazeborn. Red eyes scanned his face before they darted down to the gold chain around his neck. He pulled a face that made Tango worried he’d start crying again then and there. They cast downwards instead. “How… How long will you be here?”
Tango’s tail drooped slightly, smile stretched. “If things go well? At least a year.”
“What?” Jimmy’s gaze shot back up, eyes wide and shocked. And hopeful.
“They wanna connect the rail up with the west coast.” He started to explain, nodding his head in what he hoped was the right direction. “Aaand it just so happens that some plans made by a very smart and handsome fella put Tumble Town in a pretty central location for some infrastructurizing. More or less.”
“Oh, Tango!” His voice turned into a twitter as his hands cupped the man’s face.
“And what sort of engineer would I be if I didn’t come look after my own project?”
He barely got the words out before he was lifted off the ground and spun around to the tune of a very happy avian. “You ridiculous mad man!” Jimmy laughed. “You impress a couple rail-men and you think you can just do whatever you want?”
“I’m making it happen, ain’t I?” He pointed out, snickering along as well at his own audacity. Things Tango from a few years ago would never dare try. That was before he’d been given the opportunity of a lifetime thanks to his friends, and wouldn’t dare to let himself squander it. He hadn’t spent the last three years working overtime to worm his way into the heart of the Luxo Company for nothing, even if those years felt twice as long as the decade of work before it. For more reasons than just work.
“Oh, do they treat you well, then?” Jimmy asked, worry dampening his excitement.
Tango laughed, “Not in the slightest! But I can handle it.” He quickly added when he saw Jimmy’s wings droop.
“You shouldn’t have to.” Jimmy huffed. “Where’s their main office? And my pen. I have a letter to write.”
“Nooo, you do not.” Tango shushed him, putting his hand over the taller’s mouth when he tried to protest, receiving an indignant look. “C’mon. I don’t wanna think about work anymore today. I got a very pretty man in my arms that I wanna look at a little longer.”
It took a pleading look and a few combs through his hair, but Jimmy conceded. They migrated over to Jimmy’s desk, where they’d spent so many days before. Tango’s gaze couldn’t help wandering back towards his sewing machine. Jimmy shifted, dragging it closer. “Something inside broke I think. Katherine was kind enough to buy me a replacement in the meantime, but it’s not as nice. I was hoping you would…”
“I’ll take a look.” He immediately agreed, tilting it back to look at the needle. “I was wondering also, if you could fix my robes? I snagged the sleeve a while ago and-”
“Of course.” Jimmy chirped, expression relaxing. “Always.”
There was another pause, shorter this time as Tango reached for Jimmy’s hand. “I’m home.” He said, still shaky with nerves that refused to go away. Not until Jimmy gave him the warmest smile Tango’s even seen and pulled their hands close to his chest.
“Welcome home.”

Yee!!! I'm so excited people are interested!!!
I've had these percolating for a while now - like, 2 years, actually!!! I keep adding onto and adjusting specifics of the different species, or adding new ones, but I'll list the my shortlist of Hermits/Lifers and their species here, and then I'll start posting the details for species individually, before making a masterpost with links to all of them and this!!!
But yeah, here's my list, under the cut!!!
(Edit: I just realized I forgot to mention what the names in parentheses are - that's in reference to another aspect of the AU, called Code Bonding - which will get its own post after the species. The names are their Code Bonded partner! Also, if someone has a question mark next to their species, it means I haven't solidified my headcanon for them yet, and I'm welcome to suggestions! I rewatched Grian's pov of last life some days ago (you know, as everyone does with their favorite season of the series) and the surprise I had when in the last episode I heard "Joel, this is the ultimate betrayal, I'm sorry" when they were trying to trap the main path and Joel was under a lot of TNT and Grian was just one block away of the lever that triggered everything.
Like, I knew limited life was a lot similar to last life but Grian didn't had to pull out the same phrase to one of his red allies the two times, you know?
My natural response to this information is to make a headcanon about it and make it about Grian and his trauma responds to being betrayal.
If you watch the episode he sounds like he couldn't help himself, he was nervously laughing, seeing the lever and Joel and then the lever back and saying "Joel- Joel, you don't understand!" with the same defeat energy he said "There was buttons on the floor, Jimmy!" in limited life, like it is part of his nature, like he was trying to excuse his nature and even warn Joel to get away to the fire zone before he inevitable pull the lever. I'm pretty sure he would have done it if Joel stayed there.
So yeah, silly Grian response to pull down levers and touch buttons until seeing what it does. But I want to add how this might be also an unconscious response to the trauma of being betrayed several times in the past and fearing that people he trust would do that to him again, not only for Scar big betrayal in third life but the ones in last life too.
So, let's make a list of the ones I remember:
He was exiled of the Southlands when he become red (that isn't really a 'betrayal', but he did feel that one "exiling me from the base that I create", he felt that they abandoned him because he was a loose cause now).
Mumbo and Jimmy trying to kill him a couple times until Grian end up killing both of them for being traitors (isn't curious how when he was red he never try to go for the Southlands?)
Martyn inmediatly turning against him when he was the boogeyman and leaving for another alliance the moment he become red again.
When Bdubs pretend to join the red alliance but end up killing Lizzie.
Like, this one was a group of people he trusted and wanted to stay with. And I understand most of it is justifiable, but that doesn't erase the feeling of betrayal they provoke, that stays no matter how much you want to rationalize it (and Grian does try).
And in all of this except when he was exiled he has a fight response, Mumbo and Jimmy have tried to kill him for the fourth time, that's it, he is killing them, Martyn betrayed him the second he become the Boogeyman? He is trying to kill him, Bdubs betrays the red alliance? He is killing him!
His pilot answer of being betrayal is fighting back. I think that is the reason why he was 'ultimate betrayal' Joel in that episode, because Joel has become red two times, technically he is the reason he lost his friends one time, is logical that he thinks he could betray him and tries to do it first but at the same time doesn't want to do it, doesn't want to get rid of the only friend he has left.
I think this is something Grian starts to do automatically after this. In double life, he plans the stalactite kill on Ren and he doesn't have in count that for the soulmate link he is also gonna kill BigB until he does.
And finally in limited life the las episodes Scar was threating them, trying to kill Joel a couple times. But Scar was also someone that Grian considerate an 'allie' and was pretty chill with him when neither the noisy neighbors or Cleo where around, he does the ultimate betrayal and is successful, probably because Scar wasn't putting attention, but Grian does try to warn him that he is gonna attack him, he does a quite "I'm sorry, Scar... This is the ultimate betrayal" and he apologizes but at the end, he killed him.
My other theory is combining this with Grian's curse of getting rid or being the cause of the deads of the people he cares about, almost like this is the way the Watchers punish him for entering the game: forcing him to betray people he cares about.
I could talk about Last life Grian for hours, he is my favorite and the dynamic of Joel and him is so silly I love them.
Thank you for coming to my Grian rant of the week.

Fractured Life: A Life Series Crossover AU
(I've had this post in my drafts for almost a month now, hopefully it makes sense! i put a lot of work into it)
An AU where I put characters from my various different fandom interests into a Life Series game and shake them about >:]
Features characters from Homestuck, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Legend of Zelda Tears of The Kingdom, Hollow Knight, and all the regular Life Series members, with a total of 44 players. I might add more if I feel like it, Hades and ATLA are especially tempting me, but then that might me too many characters.
This AU is mainly just a concept/outline for now, a little sandbox I can think about and play around in. It's ment to be self indulgent and fun. I've made a whole lot of notes and a few bits of drabbles and oneshots, a bit of art, and a Minecraft World!
Below is an explanation of the rules of the game, a complete list of characters, art I've made, screenshots of the Minecraft world, and some extra ramblings about it.
RULES
Fractured Life has the same basic rules of any Life Series, with some bits of added worldbuilding for the story. This season's gimmick is that it's a mix of every other season, both in the rules of the game and the world itself.
Backround Setting
Players don't choose to be in the games.
Players are sent signs a couple weeks before a game starts, generally in dreams.
Players have all their memories intact when they start their first game but they may grow foggy over time.
When a player loses their last life, they're made a spectator ghost until the end of the game.
Ghosts cannot talk to living players (most of the time) but can talk to each other.
All players are sent home at the end of the games.
Basics
Limited amount of lives
Lose enough lives and you turn red, and hostile
You're out when you lose your last life
You can give another player one of your lives
Each session some of the players will be boogeymen, and will have to kill another player or be sent straight to red
Each player has a “Path” that gives them additional mechanics they have to use to play the game
Each session is 72 hours long, with 24 hours off time in between
During the break players aren't allowed to kill each other, and timers are paused
Each character is assigned a “Path” which determines which past game’s mechanics they use. Last Life mechanics are spread across each, most players use mechanics from Double, Limited, or Secret Life in addition to this. Winners get the same mechanics they had in the game they won.
Limited
Each Limited player has 864 hours to live (1 canon hr = 36 AU hours)
Normal deaths take off 36 hours
Boogey deaths take off 72 hours
Normal kills give 18 hours
Bogey kills give 36 hours
576+ hours = green
576-288 hours = yellow
under 288 = red
36 hours = 1 life (for trades)
Limited yellow lives can kill green lives of any path
Double
Double players each have a soulmate, with whom health and lives are shared
Boogey consequences are shared but only one player has the curse
A Double player doesn't need permission from their soulbound to trade lives away
Secret
30 hearts as usual
trading lives doesn't change heart amount
regular rewards and penalties
Secret Keeper is in a more hidden location
Red lives are given 1 task to harm someone each session and gain 10 hearts from completing it
Reds may attack players outside of their task, and get hearts from kills
3rd
starts with 3 lives, cannot interact with any extra mechanics
CHARACTER LIST
There's 44 players total in Fractured Life! The total cast of the Life Series is 18 people, it's a bit more than doubled because I couldn't bring myself to cut anyone, and I might add more if the whim takes me. I'm probably not going to come up with full stories for each and every one of them, but I want them here in my sandbox anyways.

ART

Terezi pushing Quirrel off a cliff because what i even the point of making a crossover AU set in a death game without making characters you like push each other off cliffs. I came up with this idea by choosing two characters at random to write a drabble of an interaction between them, and said interaction ended up being an attempted boogey kill. Quirrel has a sunhat because it'd help keep the sun out of his eyes while he explores, Rarity made it for him!
Tumblr media
Another random pairing! Zelda and Applejack's bases are fairly close together, and I think they'd get along pretty well! Zelda has diplomacy skills and AJ has friendship skills. Here Applejack is giving Zelda bread, in the early game before everyone gets stable food sources.
Tumblr media
My twin suggested that Fluttershy and Mumbo be soulbound together because it'd be funny. So here they are being disasters together :D
Tumblr media
Zelda and Hornet are two of my favorite video game characters ever, the thought of pairing them popped into my head and wouldn't leave so here we are <3
Tumblr media
Hornet and Link are soulbound. They agree to team for practical reasons, and then Hornet slowly finds herself caring for both them and Zelda. Meanwhile Zelda is a Limited Player, which means she has a timer ticking down instead of lives. Link and Hornet try to keep her alive for as long as possible.
Tumblr media
Bases from this post vvv
I love my silly crossover crackship throuple <33 I think Link and Zelda are in a QPP, Zelda is bi and polyamorous and Link is demiromantic and acespec. Hornet hasn't had much chance to be in a relationship like this before, she's still figuring herself out.
MINECRAFT WORLD SCREENSHOTS
Parts of builds from past games are scattered throughout the new map. I did the replicated bases in creative, and the original ones in survival!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Scar's base was torn out of the ground and put up in the sky which he's a little bit annoyed about since he didn't even move out of it. I spent way too much time on trying to get the path blocks here exactly correct!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I built Pearl's tower first, it was very fun! I had difficulty finding reference for the roof but a Scott thumbnail came through for me.
Tumblr media
The Scottage, it's at the edge of a town. This one's pretty unfinished
Tumblr media
Desetduo home. It's a bit torn up, not exactly in the same way as in canon though. I think the older builds are somewhat built on memory, rather than being the exact same places just moved to this map.
Tumblr media
Original builds time! Here's a bridge I built.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is where Zelda, Link, and some amount of the HK bugs live. It's dimmed so the bugs have a place to hide from the sun, but still spawnproof.
Tumblr media
Aplejack's farm area! I just like making big wheat fields. And I think AJ'd want to make sure no one starves to death, even if they are in a death game.
Side note, I wanted to add more images but hit the limit D:
Bonus ramblings!
If you got this far then thank you, that's very cool!! PLEASE ask me any questions you have I'd be happy to answer them, and feel free to suggest ideas for character interactions and things like that :D
I've been working on this AU in bits and pieces since January.
Planning this AU is what made me finally get around to reading the last half of Homestuck.
It's also a large part of the reason I'm currently rewatching MLP:FIM
I haven't been able to watch anything since this without considering adding the characters to the AU.
Revolutionary Girl Utena, Delicious in Dungeon, and Avatar TLA have all tempted me with this, however I have 44 characters already I really shouldn't.
I've also briefly considered adding Genshin and She-Ra characters to this AU but I just don't have much the fixation on either of those right now.
Also considering Hades characters that would be so fun. Hmm. but again 44 characters. I'd have to expand the world border.
I've ended up shipping Zelda TOTK and Hornet HK because of this AU. My idea is that Link and Hornet are soulbound together and Zelda is Limited. Hornet sticks with them for practical reasons at first but ends up bonding with both of them and she and Link try to protect Zelda and keep her in the game as long as they can.
I think this is a post canon AU for the Homestucks, they're probably in their early twenties. I was originally going to have them still be kids because there's something very funny to me about the idea of the other characters being concerned about the teenagers in this death game only to find out they're all very used to death and carnage, but I decided I'd rather they be a bit closer to the other characters so things are a bit better balanced.
Also all the trolls survived because I wanted Nepeta and Feferi here. I don't think I'm going to include the other six, because again the cast is large enough, but I might change that later if I get more invested in them all. And then I'd probably also add Calliope because I like her and I might as well!
The ponies are somewhat humanized, but still have their pony ears, coat colors, tails, hooves, and horns/wings. None of them can fly or do magic.
I've done most of the work on this before Real Life came out, I'm not sure yet if I'll find some way to work it in or just say it happens afterwards.
it took me a couple hours to write this post.
I have 37 separate documents for this au in a folder, including it one I used to write this post in.
I have 15,000 words worth of notes and planning
in addition to notes I have ~6000 words worth of drabbles and one shots, and bits of a possible first chapter from Twilight's POV
this post is ~1500 words long and I think I spent over 6 hours putting it together somehow!

Oh boy.
So I finally got a chance to read chapter 12. I... I don't even know what I'm supposed to say. I don't know how to wrap up and summarize my feelings because they are so much. (Procedes to write six paragraphs)
I'm finding myself fixated on a few small details, namely the subtle hints at Grian’s PTSD and the who, "I don't want to do it but I don't want to do anything else," style of major decision paralysis.
The small, everyday things that the average person would barely blink at now being a major trigger was (having a panic attack when something burns in the oven) was such a small but at the same time huge thing. It was a beautiful touch, and so very real.
I'm reminded of not being able to play Minecraft or watch any mcyt (especially Grian and Mumbo, ironically) after my friends death because it was something I shared with him, and something that going back to without him just felt wrong. But it was something I loved that I didn't want to give up on, and I didn’t want to pick up other things. I imagine Grian feeling the same way about his career being a passion that he isn't ready to pick back up because it was part of his life with Mumbo, but also something he doesn't want to lose.
I'm glad Grian and Scar met. I don't think it would have felt right if Grian didn't seek out that last bit of closure he needed, as well as giving that closure to Scar as well. This is the start of a beautiful friendship and I'm happy you word-of-god confirmed that they stay friends.
I'd like to headcanon that visits to Scar's lookout become a yearly tradition. At some point, he brings Martyn, Joel, Lizzy, Jimmy, and Pearl up the trail, too, because I'm sure Scar would love to meet Grian’s friends, and they would love to meet Scar.
I want to thank you again for this story (calling in a "fic" at this point almost feels reductive, it might as well be a novel to me) if I have any more thoughts, feelings, or entire essays raving about a single line, you know I won't hesitate to hit up your ask box again.
I'm so happy you liked it ❤️❤️❤️ Ngl I was waiting to see your opinion on it, I value it a lot!!
I do not think the hint towards Grian's lasting trauma even made it into the first draft of this chapter, and I can't believe it wasn't in the outline from the start! It was added on one of my many second, third, etc passes. (I often just reread passage I wrote at the start of every new writing session and inevitably continue to add new paragraphs and sentences.) You aren't the first person to mention it. I think it's...important to not just recognize the grief, but also the specific things that happened to him. I think surviving a forest fire has to be one of the scariest things to happen to a person. Included with everything else? I think he's doing better with it all than he thinks he is. I included that based on some things I read on a subreddit for burn survivors and knew it had to apply to him too.
You have repeated exactly what I was going for with Grian's job. He still loves it, he trained hard for it, but it's very much a part of his old life that fell apart and not his new current life. It also feels so. Normal. To pick up a job again and carry on. I looked at him and knew he'd just feel so, so lost after all of this. He has a type of drive in this story that is unsustainable and self-destructive. And now that switch got abruptly shut off. So where does he go now? It isn't as simple as just picking back up where he left off on his life. Sending love to you as well, thank you for sharing <3
I like your headcanon :) I'd like to add in my own which is that Scar also, at intervals, visits England as well. He does say in the beginning of the story that he's never traveled outside of that half of the country and asks Grian if it's pretty there. Seems like an exciting jump for him to make! And I'm glad they met too. I think Grian would've driven himself insane isolated in that tower if he hadn't had someone. And a good someone at that.
Likewise you know my inbox is ALWAYS open to your thoughts!!

Hello, I like compiling data. And I like the Life Series. So in the past I’ve given points to the Lifers based on their placings in the various series’. You’d get a fraction based on how many people were playing. So for example. Martyn got 6th, 3rd, 3rd and 1st. So his points for each series would be 9/14 for 3rd Life, 15/17 for Last Life, 12/14 for Double Life and 14/14 for Limited Life. You would add all of these up and divide them by the number of series’ he’s been in to give him a percentage as his score. This way those who’ve been in less series’ like Skizz, Pearl and Ren aren’t disadvantaged by that. I won’t put all the maths down but I’ll start by showing the results for the rankings as of Double Life before showing how they changed after Limited Life.
Ranking: (Rounded to 0.1% as of Double Life)
1. Pearl — 91.2%
2. Scott — 76.2%
3. Martyn — 75.6%
4. Grian — 66.8%
5. Scar — 62.9%
6. BDubs — 61.8%
7. Ren — 57.6%
8. Impulse — 55.5%
9. Etho — 54.5%
10. Joel — 54.1%
11. BigB — 51.4%
12. Cleo — 50.6%
13. Tango — 35.2%
14. Lizzie — 29.4%
15. Skizz — 19.5%
16. Mumbo — 11.8%
17. Jimmy — 6.7%
Ranking: (Rounded to 0.1% as of Limited Life) (Ranking change noted is between Double Life and Limited Life)
1. Pearl — 87.0% (-4.2%) (Equal Ranking)
2. Martyn — 84.6% (+9%) (+1 Ranking)
3. Scott — 78.6% (+2.4%) (-1 Ranking)
4. Grian — 66.2% (-0.6%) (Equal Ranking)
5. Impulse — 64.8% (+9.3%) (+3 Ranking)
6. Etho — 58.7% (+4.2%) (+3 Ranking)
7. Scar — 57.9% (-5%) (-2 Ranking)
8. Ren — 57.6% (+0%) (-1 Ranking)
9. BDubs — 53.5% (-8.3%) (-3 Ranking)
10. BigB — 52.8% (+1.4%) (+1 Ranking)
11. Cleo — 50.4% (-0.2%) (+1 Ranking)
12. Joel — 45.9% (-8.2%) (-2 Ranking)
13. Tango — 35.3% (+0.1%) (Equal Ranking)
14. Lizzie — 29.4% (+0%) (Equal Ranking)
15. Skizz — 17.8% (-1.7%) (Equal Ranking)
16. Mumbo — 11.8% (+0%) (Equal Ranking)
17. Jimmy — 6.8% (+0.1%) (Equal Ranking)
After I set this out I showed this to a few people and some mentioned they wondered how it would look if you too out the 3rd Life scores since it was the first Season and many were still finding their feet, so there are likely some anomalies in comparison to the following seasons. So I decided to compile that data too, and here are the rankings if you discount 3rd Life.
Ranking: (Rounded to 0.1% as of Limited Life if you discount 3rd Life) (Ranking change noted is the difference between the rankings of all 4 seasons and just these 3)
1. Scott — 92.9% (+14.3%) (+2 Ranking)
2. Martyn — 91.3% (+6.7%) (Equal Ranking)
3. Pearl — 87.0% (+0%) (-2 Ranking)
4. Etho — 64.0% (+5.3%) (+2 Ranking)
5. Impulse — 62.6% (-2.2%) (Equal Ranking)
6. Cleo — 62.5% (+12.2%) (+5 Ranking)
7. Ren — 57.8% (+0.2%) (+1 Ranking)
8. Grian — 54.9% ( -11.3%) (-4 Ranking)
9. Joel — 51.7% (+5.8%) (+3 Ranking)
10. Scar — 46.2% (-11.7%) (-3 Ranking)
11. BigB — 44.3% (-8.5%) (-1 Ranking)
12. BDubs — 42.7% (-10.8%) (-3 Ranking)
13. Tango — 30.4% (-4.9%) (Equal Ranking)
14. Lizzie — 29.4% (+0%) (Equal Ranking
15. Skizz — 16.0% (-1.8%) (Equal Ranking)
16. Mumbo — 11.8% (+0%) (Equal Ranking)
17. Jimmy — 6.7% (-0.1%) (Equal Ranking)
And to be honest. I think my friends were right. Of the 14 members of 3rd Life. The ranking differences based in following seasons caused in 10/14 of the members to have a Percentage Point change of 4.9% or more. Which is quite a large change. Jimmy and Ren were remarkably similar to their overall average with little change. And whilst Impulse and Skizz had some significant change it didn’t exceed 2.2% so is in a bit of a different league change wise in comparison to the other 10 who has very large point alterations from discounting 3rd Life. Meaning in general, for 10/14 of the members, 3rd Life was quite an anomaly of a season. Placement wise at least.
The other thing I noticed from looking at this is that when you look at the main 15 members who’ve been in at least 3 Seasons. Both when you count 3rd life and don’t. The top 3 (Scott, Martyn and Pearl) and the bottom 3 (Jimmy, Skizz and Tango) are rather entrenched. With the jumps between 3rd and 4th and 12th and 13th having a point difference exceeding 10%. Which is a very large point differential. Especially when you consider in the inclusive ranking that the point differential between 4th all the way down to 12th is 20.3% but the point differential from 3rd to 13th is over double that at 43.3%.
It was something I’d never really noticed before. Because the top 3 are all winners, they are expected to be that high. And Jimmy being our first in every series is a famous fact. But the fact Skizz and Tango are also consistently low down in the rankings is something that sort of went unnoticed for me. I knew they were perhaps a bit lower down. But the significant drop in points to get from 12th to 13th is something I didn’t really expect. And also the fact that there is also that considerable drop between 3rd and 4th despite Grian having won a series. His points are closer to Impulse in 5th than Scott in 3rd. That surprised me when I realised.
I also think it’s fun to note that currently, the two highest ranking people who are yet to win and the two lowest ranking people who are yet to be out first make up the entire T.I.E.S Team.

(This inspired me to write from the moment I saw it back in May, but I only just finished writing this! Your art is amazing by the way, and hopefully this fic still makes sense even if it was patchily written across the span of two months!)
It was the day for Gem and the Scotts to make their first (actual, official) appearance when Scott's guitar amp broke.
He wasn't really living paycheck-to-paycheck, not with his full-time job at a gardening speciality store and his freelance web design work, but he wasn't exactly looking to drop a lot of money suddenly on an amp that he wouldn't know the quality of until the first gig later that night. So, much like when other things happened outside of his ability to fix them, he began to reach out to others.
"Sorry, Scott, me and Tango are out of town visiting his parents!" Jimmy said over the phone.
"Ah, my bad, I forgot about that," Scott sighed. "I've just got this gig tonight, and I've no clue what to do."
"Maybe you could ask Joel? He's been hanging out with that guy—you know, has the uh grey-ish hair, wears a face mask—"
"Etho," Scott reminded him.
"Yeah, yeah! Well Etho's good with that stuff. I don't think he'd mind!"
So Scott called Joel, who promptly said, "Nah, sorry, man. Eefo's been at some project all week and I just got him to go to bed. If I bring this up anywhere near him, he's going to run himself into the ground."
"Gods, I get that. I hope he's able to get some good sleep, but I really need this amp fixed. You wouldn't happen to have picked up any new skills recently, have you?"
"Even if I had, not gonna lie, I'm sticking around with Eefo to make sure he sleeps and eats better for at least today. Also, he sleeps so quietly."
Scott squinted at that and said, "He's at your house?"
"Why the fuck would he be at my house? I'm at his house. Lizzie's hanging out with her girlfriend, and I can't stand another night of her freight-train snoring."
Joel paused for half a second.
"Don't tell her I said that."
Scott snorted and rolled his eyes as if Joel could see it.
"Won't tell a soul," Scott dramatically replied. "Thanks for picking up, anyways."
"No problem. Bet you could try giving Grian a call, though. Not sure how much he knows about amps, but he does know a lot of people."
"Yeah, sounds about right for him. Thanks Joel, have fun with your date."
"Yeah, yeah, I know you must be jealous since it's just been you and righty—"
Scott hung up before he could get another word in, knowing that his one "innocent" jab at Joel would definitely have consequences later no matter how true the statement was.
He huffed at that, but the clock really was ticking, and he was beginning to actually get nervous. Without another thought, he phoned Grian, his heartbeat picking up every time the phone rang with no response. It wasn't until the last ring that Grian managed to pick up.
"Hey, Grian, do you know anyone who could help—" "Pearl has no idea what she's talking about, whatever she's told you is just not true—"
They both paused.
"What about Pearl—?" "You heard nothing."
Scott pursed his lips, and that itch to gossip grew, but at this point, he could feel the time ticking down.
"I have no idea what you're talking about," Scott told him, "but whatever all of that is, it's not why I called. My first gig with my band is in a few hours, but the amp for my guitar broke. Do you know anyone who could fix it?"
Grian hummed (and, suspiciously, sounded very relieved. Scott would investigate it later) and said, "Guitar amp? Well I do happen to know someone who could help with that, and he owes me a favor. You're still in town, right?"
"Yeah, I am, I'll text you the address right now. I can't thank you enough, Grian, I was starting to get worried! You're the third person I've had to call."
"It's no problem! By the way, the person I'm sending to you is Mumbo, he's my flatmate. It shouldn't take too long for him to get to you, just add 10 extra minutes to whatever time you had in mind. He drives like the car will explode if he takes his hands off the steering wheel."
"As long as it doesn't take him hours to get here, I don't mind."
"It won't, it won't," Grian reassured him. "...Also... if Pearl happens to tell you anything—"
"—then I'll be sure to get some popcorn while she tells me everything, thanks for the heads-up! Bye!" And he hung up.
True to Grian's word, someone did eventually show up (15 minutes later than what he would've expected since the drive should've been 25 minutes long and not 40), and Scott vaguely recognized him. Grian's flatmate, yes, but also Grian's skittish partner in crime when he went trespassing, a friend of a friend that sometimes showed up to the field days that Grian liked to organize, and the person that had once knocked out the power for half the city (which, Scott figured, probably had something to do with Grian, too).
And he was devastatingly attractive.
"I am so sorry," Mumbo anxiously apologized. "I'm not familiar with the parking lot here, and I couldn't find a parking spot until just then!"
"Oh, it's not a problem, I'm glad you made it," Scott soothed, occasionally eyeing Mumbo up and down. He was really glad that Mumbo had made it.
Mumbo was wearing an oddly formal button-up with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, a black vest, and matching slacks, but he also had heavy duty work boots and dark brown gloves that he clearly used for everything related to tinkering. Even if Scott only needed his guitar amp fixed, Mumbo had brought goggles, too, which sat on his slicked-back hair.
Scott blinked.
Mumbo wasn't nearly as far from his type as one would've guessed.
Lean with vaguely muscular arms, clearly knowledgeable, and Mumbo was taller than him. Not absurdly so, but enough that Scott had to tilt his head upwards to meet his eyes.
"I'm assuming this is your speaker...?" Mumbo eventually asked, and Scott realized he'd stared a few seconds too long.
"That's it, yes," Scott smoothly replied. "I hate to rush you, but my gig does start in three hours, so do you think you'll be able to fix it before then? If you aren't able to fix it, though, I get it. I appreciate the help anyways."
At that, Mumbo almost seemed mildly offended, and he said, "Well, I certainly haven't worked on something like this before, but it isn't that complicated. I'll have it done in an hour at most, so you'll have plenty of time to practice."
"You really are my knight in shining armor," Scott snickered.
Mumbo's face flushed red at that, and he poorly attempted to hide the fact by kneeling down to start working on the amp. Scott grinned. He didn't mind working to get the attention he wanted, but with easy reactions like that, it wouldn't be hard at all to get it.
As the first couple of minutes ticked by, Scott decided to settle on the ground with his legs crossed and text his bandmates. Gem and Impulse had decided to go out and buy glitter to make their usual band make-up really pop for their first show, but they were taking a while. As soon as he was done sending his check-in text, he glanced over to see the repair progress.
"So, are those goggles for style?" Scott asked.
Mumbo looked up in surprise that he'd even been addressed, and after a moment, he replied, "No, I was working on my own project at home, and it was a little more... risky. But I was in a rush to get here as quick as I could, so I didn't bother leaving them at home!"
"Do you do risky things a lot?" he teased.
"Yes, actually," Mumbo answered, horribly oblivious to Scott's intentions, "I can't put a number to the amount of times I've burnt myself or set something on fire!"
Scott let out a small, quiet sigh and began to watch Mumbo work. None of it made sense, but it made the time go by quicker.
Somewhere between 10-15 minutes later, he figured he might as well start applying the band make-up that he did have available to him. He leaned his phone against Impulse's drum set and opened the camera, then he started with the eyeliner. Next came the lightest amount of foundation and a small amount of dark eye shadow. With that done, he began tracing out a blue star on his cheek. His movements only slowed to a stop when he realized that just over his shoulder in the camera, he could see that Mumbo had stopped working.
"Did you need something, Mumbo?" Scott asked.
Mumbo opened his mouth to respond, then visibly paused for a too-long moment. He took in Scott's changed appearance, and judging by the sudden nervousness in his movements, Scott could only guess that he'd applied it just as intended.
"Yes, yes, I did... uh, I just wanted to know...? If you mind if I tamper with some other settings?" Mumbo stammered.
Scott grinned, all-too pleased with himself and replied, "You can tamper with whatever you like. Very polite of you to ask first."
"That's—that's what manners are for!" Mumbo weakly said, giving Scott an equally shaky grin before he went back to working. At least, he tried to. It took about a minute for him to reorient himself, much to Scott's delight.
Only when Mumbo regained his focus did Scott return to his own work. He finished one of the stars and spent a few extra minutes drawing the other star. He added a few small blue dots around the stars, almost like freckles, and then he patted them dry so the glitter would look smoother on it whenever Gem and Impulse returned.
Now it had been a little over 35 minutes, and Scott was thoroughly bored. He took to watching Mumbo again, alternating between watching the subtle flex of his arms and trying to make sense of whatever repairs or tampering was going on. Ultimately, he got bored of the mechanics and focused in on the mechanic.
"Grian told me that you owed him a favor. Care to share?" Scott idly asked.
Mumbo hummed, continuing to work, and then he answered, "Well, it's only one favor, but he uses it a lot. Not that I mind, I am very grateful, I just thought he'd use it for more pressing matters like... if he was in a life-or-death situation, or if he was being hunted down for an impossibly large debt!"
"You must really owe him, then."
"I definitely do," Mumbo agreed. "We've known each other since middle school, and we went to the very same high school and college. Thing is, that last year of college, I struggled with finding a secure place to live, and I was at risk of not being able to graduate after all. Well, he gave me a place to stay, and he did some of my easier assignments... for me."
Scott's eyebrows raised, but he didn't comment. He didn't think it was a big deal, but it wasn't something he'd expected from someone like Mumbo.
Instead of any criticism, he said, "Glad he did. What you're able to do is impressive. I just hope he's not taking advantage of that favor, or else I'll have to sic Impulse on him."
Mumbo huffed, easy-going and amused.
"He isn't, he isn't," Mumbo reassured him. "If I didn't want to, I wouldn't. Besides, this just means I can ask him for a favor in return, too. I'm already wondering what kind of redstone parts I can order with my newfound favor!"
"You really like redstone, huh?"
"Couldn't live without it!"
The conversation petered out as Mumbo focused in on a specific part, and then just a moment later, he seemed satisfied with what he'd done and put everything back together.
"Care to test it out?" Mumbo requested. "I was just curious how it'd sound if I made a few adjustments."
Scott nodded, stood up, and collected his guitar. He was all-too pleased when he saw the amp even show signs of working again, but then again, Mumbo had been too confident to ever doubt. Readjusting the settings, Scott got his guitar pick and strummed the strings a few times to test out the sound. Now, despite his experience playing the electric guitar, he usually needed to adjust his settings a few times to get the clean, tuned sound that he was looking for. However, somehow, Mumbo had improved the quality of it just by messing with it for a little over half an hour.
"Does that sound better?" Mumbo politely asked. "I'm afraid I'm not well-versed in this subject matter..."
"Yes, gods, this sounds great!" Scott excitedly said, testing out a few more notes. He'd readjust, anyways, and see if Gem and Impulse liked the sound of it, too, but this was far better than it'd been before.
"Glad to hear! Another job well done for me, then, and I suppose a new skill I may look into later on," Mumbo mused.
He began to get up, but Scott was still distracted. It wasn't until he'd allowed his mind to stop wandering on future performances that he realized Mumbo was heading to the exit. Quickly, he set his guitar down and grabbed some of his make-up, making a dash for the exit before Mumbo could get any further.
"Mumbo!" Scott called out, getting the other to stop just as he pushed the door open.
"Oh, yes? Did it break already?" Mumbo worriedly asked.
"No, no, you're fine, I was just wondering if I could repay you later on with dinner?" Scott asked.
Mumbo's worried expression melted away, and he said, "You don't have to do that, really, Grian will repay me just fine—"
"I don't have to, but I'd like to," Scott interrupted. "If you want to, that is. You just really caught my eye."
Mumbo's face flushed a lovely shade of pink, and quietly, he nodded. Scott grinned and held up a tube of lipstick he had. Before Mumbo could question it, Scott's gentle fingers, rough in some places from strumming guitar strings, took ahold of Mumbo's arm and turned it so the underside of it was exposed to his gaze. Then, glittery pink lipstick was gliding across his inner forearm, spelling out Scott's name and phone number in loopy symbols that ended off with a small heart.
"Text me if you're still up for that date," Scott said with a wink, and then he turned away, leaving Mumbo to dazedly stumble outside into the parking lot.
The sun was setting, warm sunshine dancing across his face and shimmering off of the pretty writing on his skin, and all he could think about was how Scott's careful touch had left goosebumps on his arms.
I guess I have a date.
Grian would never believe him.

Last Life Drabble that I wrote at like midnight :D
Warnings: There’s like a brief mention of suicide , because of the nature of the final of 3rd life. Other than that, I think it’s all good? If not, I’ll add more warnings if anyone requests!
---
The Gods and their Games
It was happening again. People were disappearing randomly, without warning. Grian was gone first, a noticeable absence as his chaotic presence was quickly noted to be absent and his stocks for his shop left unfilled, their payments still stacked in the chest.
Pearl disappeared next. Her and Gem were leaving for a bit to go over to the Empire’s server, but when Gem emerged from the portal, she found herself standing alone. When she brought it up with the other leaders, she also learned that Scott and Lizzie had gone missing too, neither responding to letters that had been sent their way. Jimmy and Joel shared a knowing look, but kept their mouths closed.
Multiple people started going then, without a trace as to where. Whispers were started up, among those who had been tossed into a death game. ‘Surely not?’ one would say. ‘What else could it be?’ was everyone’s thoughts, however.
But none expressed their worries to fellow servermates. (Maybe they should have. But what would it have done, except for make their friends feel guilty for being unable to help? The Gods are powerful, and if its a game they desire, then it is a game they shall have)
Finally, the Gods decided they had enough candidates for the next game to begin, and all the players came to consciousness, standing around a bedrock floor with a glimmering table of enchantment in the center.
There was a moment of clarity, of recognition between a majority of them. Before the game started, where they all stood with their names above their heads, flickering between three different shades as they shifted about, a teaser for what was about to unfold. But, then there was the feeling of rushing cold down all of their spines and in their veins, of a freezing entering their very souls and shutting a part off.
As all of the players now glanced around, they felt confused. Where were they and who were all of these people? No one was familiar to each other.
(The Gods hold power that is to be feared. So easily can they decide to wash one’s memories away. It’s so simple too, a simple flick of the wrist and all of those precious moments being lost, flowing down the stream and away into the nets of the God that has called for them.)
Lovers lock eyes (a beautiful fairy with dazzling pink hair and an ordinary man with brown and green hair with emerald eyes, perhaps) and maybe there’s a spark there, for just a second, but it’s snuffed out before they can begin to even question. The two run in different directions, without questioning why their left ring fingers feel empty. What would there be to miss?
A mischievous man in a red sweater catches up with another that is dressed in false diamond armour, stealing a life from right under him. He doesn’t feel guilty, but there’s a feeling pushed back far in his mind, one that tells his to protect and defend, even though he has no loyalty to this stranger. After all, he doesn’t owe his life to someone he doesn’t know. (They were the last two, despite all odds against the first red of the server. Their ally ship began with an accidental death that started a life debt, and their friendship ended with a fight atop the hill they called home. One shoved off the side of the mountain, before the other willingly followed after)
A King and his Hand don’t see each other at first, but later, when one stands atop their lonely tower and sets the wood under his feet on fire, the other comes running without hesitation. He doesn’t question why he does it so instinctively, why he panics and worries. He slips the werewolf a piece of netherwart later, and with it a small piece of a previous world cement in his mind. (They won’t tell you this, but the Gods do indeed have favorites. They could gift a little snippet of a life last lived as a treat, so easily taken away too if they become unimpressed.)
A zombie woman tries to follow after a man covered in a mossy cloak before deciding against it, turning around and heading in the opposite direction. The man glances back at the red-haired woman and pauses, trying to figure out why he feels upset about her walking away. Another man calls his name and the feeling is lost, and he is left staring at an empty forest, the other player gone.
A man with cyan blue hair and a golden halo to match the color of his name passes by a stray poppy flower, picking it up and gently tucking it behind his ear. Later, he gives this flower to a man he feels like he knows, but the two part ways without bringing it up. (For a past life, the man says as he gives his previous lover a flower. Their eyes meet; flashes of a flower forest tucked away in the corner of the world, of late night slumber parties and cuddles, of hand holding with the feeling of being loved and safe in each other’s grasp- but then the moment is gone. Neither remember, and the Gods watch with smiles)
The Gods have been careful. They want this game to last, and keeping previous lives out of the player’s memories is important if they want to see new conflict arise. This is a game for them, and they want to be entertained.

A collection of my Last Life headcanons
I mean the title pretty much says it all. This is just a little write up of some of my Last Life headcanons that I have. I’ve got some others but they’re heavily inspired by others so here’s some that I think I’ve put a fun twist on
1) Life counters
On the inside of everyone’s left wrist is their life counter. You can only see your own life counter. It has a horizontal row of three hearts that grey out when empty and are red/yellow/green when full. Below the hearts is a vertical row of your extra dark green hearts. They don’t leave grey versions when used.
2) Boogeyman
When you are the boogeyman, the word “Boogeyman” appears above your life counter (so toward the wrist). The word disappears when you’ve been cured and a small green diamond sparkle appears on the back of your wrist. Others can see the sparkle to know you’re cured, and it doesn’t go away. If you fail to kill anyone as the boogeyman, the word greys out and becomes both permanent and visible to everyone.
3) Trades
On your right palm is a faint image of a totem of undying. You (normally) trade lives via handshake (though it can be done remotely, it’s just awkward trying to handshake someone who isn’t present). When trading, it happens similarly to the animation. A totem appears from the trader, hovers over the handshake, then goes into the receiver's chest. Yes, there are sparkles. During the transaction, lightning-like lines appear, starting at the wrist and moving up the arm after each trade. The lines are the color of lives that each person is on at the end of a transaction (ex: A light green gives a life to a red. The resulting marks are yellow for both parties). Everyone can see both the lightning marks, the palm totem, and the trading animation
4) Visible life color
Some part of everyone’s clothing/outfit/appearance shows off the color of life they are on. It’s magic, they change color when lives are lost/gained, and it can’t be removed somehow. It has to be something highly visible and easily recognizable. For canon skin changes, I sort of mixed in my idea with whatever they had for more visibility if needed. I think I had everyone’s planned out, but I can’t remember if they were all shown/noticeable in my art. Also I kept the red lives pale/gray-ish skin tone from 3L because I thought it was cool
How I did them in my art (w/ normal skins):
Grian: Sleeves and waistband of his sweater Jimmy: The bands around his waist Martyn: Headband Impulse: Collar and sleeve bands Mumbo: Tie and pocketsquare thing Scott: Shirt stripes and his magical floating things Pearl: Fluffy bands and lining of her hoodie Scar: Accents of his robes Joel: Accents of his robes (red) and main color of his robe (other) Ren: Wristbands and suspenders accents BigB: Shirt Lizzie: Accents on her uniform Cleo: Flower crown and heart pin thing Bdubs: Flowers on his hoodie Etho: Circles on his sleeves and wristbands Skizz: Tie and hair Tango: Gloves
5) Death wounds
After you lost a life, the final blow stayed with you as some sort of scar or visible sign. It isn’t gory or anything, it’s more of a reminder. Some things like sword or axe kills are as simple as torn and repaired clothing or a scar. Arrows leave a hole in clothing and a small circular scar. Lava kills leave players ashy and/or smoking. Fall damage results in torn pant legs (thanks 3L Scar). Enderpearl damage gives you ender particles. The firework rocket left a colorful stain that showed up on all of Pearl’s hoodies.
I think that’s it, I’ll add on to this if I remember any. If you want any examples for any of these, like pictures or what it means for each player, let me know. Also y’all are welcome to use and add on to these, but let me know cuz I want to see :)

more additions to this via the messages between me and @coffee-lynx :D
bdubs and scar are the same age and have the same birthday, so even though scar is implied to be adopted they are effectively known as twins. at some point jimmy asks "oh are you identical twins?" to which bdubs and scar just look at each other as a laugh track plays
etho playing 'catch' with bdubs and scar happens at a family dinner/grill night and instead of a tnt minecart it is a firework. bdubs loses a tooth
lizzie is joel's wife/gf (i imagine there would be a wedding episode), they started dating some time after he and etho split and she shows up to most of the same scenes joel is in. since joel was kind of a rebound during etho's divorce, their relationship didn't last very long, but they still have kept in touch
bigb, martyn, lizzie, and on occasion cleo are all part of a LARPing group started by ren
martyn and ren take questionably-hetero roles in the LARP scenes, but martyn is still referred to as the 'straight friend' by scott no matter how arguably gay it gets
sometimes cleo needs someone to housesit while she's away, so she calls etho, but then also doesn't trust him so she calls joel and lizzie as well. joel has supervised bdubs in the past (in reference to that one part of double life where joel was told to babysit him)
there's an episode where cleo goes out of town but doesn't tell etho about it. she gets gem to act as her and tells scar and bdubs to pretend nothing has changed, just to mess with etho
scar is still a disney fan in this
theres a multi-episode plotline where grian, joel, and jimmy try to start a bakery
scar and grian have some kind of friendship history before the events of the show, and scar attempts to rekindle that
jimmy and tango are friends
the first episode opens with etho showing up at cleo's door in order to talk with her in person after many many years. scar answers the door and says "dad! you're here!" . etho closes the door. he forgot he had kids.
judge judy and executioner is a legitimate B plot in this show
cleo is a zumba instructor
will probably add even more to this at a later date!
