I am so excited that I have Variations twice a week this year unlike last year which was only one! It is my favorite class.

At the beginning of September, I will be starting to volunteer at the mission on Fridays and Saturdays. I was looking at my schedule to find where I could add volunteer dates and at the same time line it up so I will have a ride to the site since I don't have a license yet.

Not to mention that soon, I will be starting to learn how to drive! I am going to start the theory course next month and once I finish that and get my learner's license, I can do behind-the-wheel with my dad, so I am ready when I turn 16 next year to get my provisional license! It will make everything so much easier when I can drive myself back and forth instead of depending on Mom and Dad since they are both very busy as well.

While gaming today, I had a wonderful conversation with someone in my guild. It's a Christian guild, and we were talking about some of the things I was learning in my coursework. Apparently he's some sort of Bible teacher? I can't remember exactly what he said. They are all very nice though, and it was wonderful to talk about all of that with someone. It was sweet, because he and another officer in the guild said they felt very protective over me because of my age and they both have daughters too. They even said my parents could just the Discord, but I told them that my parents trusted me and could always ask me to login if they wanted to see for themselves, but I already showed them. They thought it was nice that they do Bible studies and prayer meetings along with guild things.

“Have you noticed that everything seems so much lighter after you leave the city?”

Roy looked out of the window in the same direction as Riza, looking at the sun shining brightly over the green hills as the train sped out of Eastern City along the branch line, stopping at all the small country towns on the way. They’d left Central in the early hours of the morning whilst it was still dark, and it was still a while to go before they reached Resembool. 

Riza yawned, but she couldn’t bring herself to close her eyes and try to sleep, not when the countryside was looking so beautiful. She couldn’t believe that in all her life, she’d never been this far out of the metropolis. It was like a whole other world out here, a place where she could almost imagine that the horrors of the Amestrian regime had never existed.

Things still weren’t good yet. There was a long way to go before the damage from Bradley’s Fuhrership would be rectified, but at least the country was slowly making its way towards a democracy again. General Grumman, drafted in to pick up the pieces in the wake of Bradley’s death, seemed to be a reasonable man, but then again, when one’s definition of ‘reasonable’ was as broad as ‘not completely insane’, the bar was set pretty low. At least Grumman didn’t appear to be obsessed with making himself immortal. Well, not yet, and Roy was close enough to him to hopefully be able to spot the warning signs. 

Still, in the last year and a half since the regime had been unceremoniously decapitated in very dramatic fashion, things had been moving steadily in the right direction. The draconian laws were being repealed little by little. Madam Christmas was no longer operating out of the back of a bookshop and whilst the regulations on alchemy use were still tight, Riza no longer lived in fear of being shot for her tattoo. 

All in all, she had hope for the future now, not just hope for the country but hope for her own future as well, and that was something that so many people had lost over the past couple of decades. 

She glanced over at Roy across the train carriage from her, staring out of the window still and completely oblivious to her looking at him. Their relationship was moving steadily in the right direction as well, and every version of the future that Riza was hoping for included him in some shape or form. 

In a way she was glad that she had not followed him into the military now, as much as she had wanted to at the time. The anti-fraternisation regulations weren’t one of the things that would be going away in a hurry and they would have made things very difficult. She wondered if Roy was thinking the same thing about where their relationship was going; if he too couldn’t imagine a future without her in it. They had spoken about the nebulous future so many times over the last few months, always optimistic and full of fire, always full of grand plans about what would happen next, but for some reason, the next stage of their own lives together had never really come up. 

Presently, Roy caught her eye looking at him, and he smiled.

“What are you thinking about?”

“You.”

He laughed. “Fair enough.”

“What were you thinking about?”

“I was wondering how difficult it’ll be to find Hohenheim and Trisha once we get there. She said it’s a small community that protects their own; I’m a little concerned that we’ll be run out of town if we say we’re looking for them.” He paused. “And I was thinking about you, too.”

The rest of the journey continued in silence, the same easy silence that they had always shared since they had first met in the Hawkeye house all those years ago, and eventually Riza drifted off into a doze as the early start caught up with her, only waking to Roy’s gentle shake of her shoulder and soft kiss on her cheek. 

“Come on, we’re here.”

Resembool was a small town, and at first glance it appeared that sheep outnumbered people six to one, but Roy’s fears of being hounded back onto the first outbound train were quelled when the locals seemed happy enough to direct them towards Trisha. She and Hohenheim had made their home on the very outskirts of the town, a small white house on the top of a hill overlooking the rest of Resembool. 

“I’m beginning to see why people were happy to let us have directions,” Roy said as they made their way up the hill, which was deceptively steep. “I think anyone wanting to kidnap Hohenheim again would definitely think twice if they had to tackle this hill.” 

Riza just laughed, but by the time they reached the hand-painted wooden sign reading Elric Herbal Dispensary at the gate, she too needed to get her breath back. From this angle she could see the massive glasshouse that took up most of the yard space, and she spied Trisha coming out carrying armfuls of herbs.

“Well, this is an unexpected surprise.” She put down the plants and came over to open the gate for them; Riza could smell the aloe vera and tea tree on her. “Come on in; you’ll need something to fortify you after the walk up the hill.” 

They followed her up the path as she ran on ahead, leaning in through the open window. “We’ve got visitors!”

A minute or so later, the front door opened, revealing Hohenheim with a toddler who could only be described as a mini-Hohenheim on his hip. The child had his golden eyes and hair, and as he regarded Riza and Roy with the scrutiny only a nearly-one-year-old could give, Riza could definitely see the beginnings of the death glare as well. 

Hohenheim smiled. “Hello Roy, Riza. This is an unexpected surprise.”

“It’s good to see you. This must be Edward.” Roy braved the boy’s scrutiny, solemnly holding out a hand to him. Edward just continued to stare dubiously, as if he’d been offered a poisonous snake.

“Yes.” Trisha came over and tickled her son, immediately breaking the tension as he burst into giggles. “And you two might as well be the first to know that his brother or sister is on the way as well.” She patted her stomach, still flat to the unedified observer. “Come on in. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen anyone from the city; you’ll have to give us all the news.”

They entered the house and Trisha set about making tea, Edward returning to the far more important task of building block towers. 

“So, it seems you’ve been busy since you’ve been here,” Roy began. Hohenheim and Trisha looked at each other and then down at Trisha’s belly, and Roy gave a squawk of alarm. 

“That’s not what I meant! I was talking about the greenhouse!” He looked across at Riza for help, and she shook her head. 

“You got yourself into that hole, you can get yourself out.”

Trisha laughed and took pity on him. “Yes, it was quite easy to get set up in the end. My family was always in the traditional medicine line before I went to the city, so the Elric name is trusted in these parts. It’s been good to get back into it with more space than a broom closet. As for Van, everyone knows he’s an alchemist and he gets requests for help with fixing things sometimes, but since our closest neighbours are proper doctors and we don’t get all that many stabbings and less than legal activities in Resembool, he’s been enjoying being a house-husband. I never knew he could bake.”

“According to your summation of the carrot cake yesterday, I still can’t,” Hohenheim said. 

“Well, some of your attempts come out better than others. I think it’s the fact you try to apply science to it all.”

Riza watched the interplay between the two of them fondly. It was good to see them happy and safe after everything that had happened, and the amount of adversity that they had overcome and still been able to settle down into a normal family life gave her fresh hope for her and Roy. Riza would be the first to admit that her life thus far had not been at all normal in any sense of the word, but she knew that she had the chance to find that normality. 

The talk soon turned to their friends in Central and how everyone was getting on. Fuery and Breda were still working tirelessly with Roy. Falman had been sent on secondment to Briggs fortress for six months and had come home with a Drachman fiancée as well as the vodka shipment. Hughes wouldn’t stop talking about new-born Elysia for more than five minutes straight, during which he was talking about Gracia instead. Havoc and Rebecca seemed to be going strong, and Madam Christmas’s business was flourishing even more now that it was out in the open. 

Eventually, Roy started to talk about alchemy and the new licensing plans with Hohenheim, and Riza found herself following Trisha back out to the greenhouse to retrieve the dropped plants from earlier. They were gathering up bundles of tea tree together when Trisha asked the question.

“What’s eating you, Riza? You’ve been very quiet all afternoon.”

Riza sighed. “I don’t know. I guess… How did you know that Hohenheim was the one? How did you know that he was your future and you wanted to spend the rest of your life with him?”

“Hmm.” Trisha sat down on the little bench outside the greenhouse, sorting the bundles in her lap, and Riza perched next to her. “I think, in a way, it was more that he knew. Van’s lived a long time and he’s met so many people, but he’s always said that I was the first person he ever wanted to share his story with. It wasn’t just a question of trusting me with the knowledge, although that was a large part of it. It was more wanting me to know the truth and wanting to open up. For me…” Her hand came to her stomach again. “I’ve always wanted to be a mother, and he was the one I could see myself raising children with.”

“It doesn’t bother you, the fact he’s going to outlive you and the children?”

“No. I’ve made peace with it. I know he’s still going to love me when I’m eighty. Van’s not quite as accepting; he’s looking for a way to reverse what happened to him so that he can start aging again and die a natural death, but for now we’re just enjoying the time that we have. Life is short – for most of us, at least – so we need to make the most of it.”

It was such a simple truth, and yet it hit close to home for Riza. So much of her life had been spent in the shadows. Yes, part of that had been by design whilst she had been living at the bookshop and helping the others who spent their lives in the shadows, but even then, she had been on the edges of that life looking in. She had gone from being shut up in her own home to shutting herself up in a new home, and it was only during the last couple of years, helping Amestris get back on its feet in the best way she could, that she had really stepped out into the light. It was time to make the most of the life she now had, and in Riza’s mind, that included sharing it with Roy. 

Roy stuck his head out of the kitchen window. Speak of the devil.

“Hohenheim’s making dinner,” he said. “I’ve been tasked with keeping Edward away from the stove, but I really don’t think he likes me.”

Riza rolled her eyes as Trisha burst out laughing. 

“Oh Roy. What are we going to do with you?”

They made their way back inside to the kitchen, where Roy and Edward appeared to be engaged in a staring contest. Hohenheim was obviously trying very hard not to laugh and failing miserably. 

“Roy, he’s strapped into his high-chair, he’s not likely to make a run for it,” Trisha pointed out. 

“I know, but children are tricky things. I keep thinking that if I turn my back for a moment I’ll find him swinging from the lampshade or something.”

Trisha sighed. “You’re a brilliant alchemist and an excellent military tactician but you’re absolutely hopeless with children, you know that?”

“We can’t all be good at everything.”

Riza continued to watch the interplay between Roy and Edward for a while. She was not particularly maternal, not in the way that Trisha had always wanted to have kids, and there was a small part of her that was afraid of repeating the same mistakes that her father had made and perpetuating the cycle. All the same, when she thought of a nebulous future that included children, it was Roy that she could see in the picture; still just as hopeless as he was now but with more than enough love to make up for it. 

Trisha caught her eye and gave a knowing smile, and Riza looked away, embarrassed at the train her thoughts were taking. Still, the notion of that permanent future wouldn’t leave her mind. Not the children yet, but the future that was inextricably linked with Roy.

It was a shame when the evening came to a close and they had to leave Trisha and Hohenheim to go back to the little inn by the railway station that they’d booked into for the night. It had been so good to see them thriving out here, with Hohenheim finally finding some form of peace. They left them with the promise to come back and meet the new baby when he or she arrived next year and the knowledge that they were always welcome at any time, and they made their way back down the hill as the sun began to go down. 

“I’m so glad they’re ok, you have no idea. I know that Trisha would have found some way to let us know if anything had happened, but it’s been praying on my mind. I feel a little guilty that we didn’t come to check in on them sooner.”

Riza reached out and found Roy’s hand in the dim dusk light. “I think that might have done more harm than good. They needed the time to get themselves settled and to disappear into the community. And we know that they’re all right now. Honestly, I don’t think that there’s ever been a couple more determined to stick together through thick and thin.”

“I don’t know.” Roy squeezed her hand. “I think we do pretty well on that score.”

“Yeah.” Riza paused, trying to work out the best way of wording what she was about to say and deciding to just go ahead and say it. “Roy, I’ve been thinking. About the future.”

“Yes?”

“I can’t imagine a future without you in it. Well, I can, but I don’t want to. And I was thinking about making that future permanent.”

“Getting married and starting a family, you mean?”

“Yes. Not necessarily the starting a family part. I’ve not gone broody from meeting Edward. But the getting married and being a family of two part. In the future, of course, once everything’s more stable…” She trailed off her rapid justifications as Roy stopped in his tracks. 

“Why wait till the future?” he asked. 

“What?”

“Why wait till the future and everything being more stable? That might take a very long time; Bradley did a lot of damage in a short space of time and it’s going to take a while to unpick. It might be years before things are better again. I don’t want to wait that long.”

“You don’t mean right now?”

“No, of course not. We’ll need some time to plan it. Although we are absolutely under no circumstances allowing Hughes to get involved in planning, you saw what he was like when he and Gracia were getting married.”

“He might be less exuberant if it’s not his own wedding.”

“Don’t bet on it. But I don’t see why we should wait to make it official when it’s what we both want.”

“Are you sure it’s what we both want?”

Roy took her other hand, and Riza could see the earnestness in his face. “I don’t think I’ve ever been more sure about anything. Right now, with all this upheaval going on around us, it’s probably the only thing that I’m sure about. I can get down on one knee and do it properly if you want.”

“No, no, it’s ok… Roy, get back up, you silly man!” She tried to pull him back up onto his feet.

“I’m down now, I might as well do it. Riza Hawkeye, will you marry me? Soon? At a definitive point within the next few months, not a vague date in the future?”

“Yes! Yes, of course I will, now get up before someone sees us!”

“There’s no one around for miles except Trisha and Hohenheim and they’d probably be cheering us on.” 

Nevertheless, he got to his feet again, brushing the dust off his trousers before pulling Riza in for a kiss. 

It was one of those moments that she never wanted to end, and by the time they broke away, the sun was well and truly setting, the lights of the town below starting to twinkle in the darkness as they continued to make their way down hand in hand. 

As much as she wanted to think about the future rather than the past, Riza couldn’t help looking back. A few years ago, she had accepted that her life would be a completely solitary one, never to be shared with anyone. 

She was so glad that she had turned out to be wrong in that respect, and that the future she had never thought possible was materialising itself right in front of her, that it was literally here in her hands. 

She glanced at Roy, returning his smile and squeezing his hand. It was time to let go of the shadows of the past that had haunted her for so long. 

It was time to live in true freedom at last.

Where to Buy Flea Medication

This past weekend my husband and I were out walking the pups when we saw a kitten sitting behind a nursing home.

I walked down to see if it had tags so that I could get it back home, but there were no tags.

Long story short, the kitten was born near the nursing home and had no family.

Of course, I went back and scooped her up.

I brought her to the vet. She checked out okay, so I set out on a mission to find a home for the kitten.

Within hours, good friends of ours contacted me and said they would love to give her a home.

Buying Flea Medication Online

I was telling my friend that I had brought her into the vet where they gave me a free dose of Frontline to take care of any fleas.

I then asked if she wanted me to go back and grab more for her, but she declined, saying they always got their flea preventatives online because it is both cheaper and more convenient than running to the vet.

I had some questions about her online experiences since I traditionally picked up all of my pets’ medicine from our vet.

With three dogs and cat, any chance of saving money is always welcome!

I did some research on several online stores to see where I could get the best deals and to read what other customers were saying about their experience.

Here’s what I found.

What to Look for in Online Pharmacies

It is not that I didn’t know about vet meds being available online. I didn’t order online because I didn’t trust the stores.

Being an active member of the pet community and regularly reading a variety of pet articles, I have come upon more than a few reports pointing out the dangers of ordering online.

Of course, this was years ago when it first started becoming more popular.

Over time, things have changed in the regulations and safety of getting meds online.

After completing my research, I have found multiple reputable online pharmacies.

Here’s a list of things I was looking for regarding the purchase of medication from various websites.

I will note that not all of the following restrictions are applicable for flea preventatives (Some may focus on human, not pet, pharmacies).

Vet-VIPPS (Verified Internet Pharmacy Practice Sites) accredited[1]

Check legitscript.com to see if they are a registered pharmacy[2]

Check to see if they are Safe Pharmacy[3] approved

Make sure they are a US-based pharmacy; different countries have different regulations on medications

Check the Better Business Bureau to see if they are in good standing

Make sure a prescription is required for prescription drugs

The reason to take caution when buying online is that online pharmacies that are not accredited have been known to provide wrong, ineffective, or out-of-date medications, all of which can put your dog at risk for medical complications.

Like I said, I have always gotten my flea medication from my vet.

They even offer an online store through Midwest Veterinary Supply, making things easy to order.

Their online ordering link directs you to three different websites:

Two are for farm animals and the third is for domestic pets.

The major downside to ordering through this site is that it’s isn’t as easy and straightforward as many of the other sites listed here. 

You’ll probably have to get a prescription from your vet before you can order here, as well, which kinds of negates the convenience of ordering online.

Though Chewy.com isn’t as well-known as Amazon, it is a great online pet store.

On a personal note, I will say that my shopping experiences with Chewy have always been pleasant.

Plus, when I’ve requested to do a return, they have been accommodating and asked I donate the product to a local shelter instead of sending it back.

Regarding Chewy and medication, I am happy to report they are associated with a licensed pharmacy.

After comparing pricing with other online companies and my vet, I can confidently state they have the best pricing available on most medicine, especially on Bayer’s Seresto collar.

The first thing I will say after completing my research is that I am absolutely blown away by the large variety of flea medications on the market.

“Wan” is Japanese for “woof,” so is this collar only effective against Japanese fleas?

I was familiar with several of the brands, but to be honest, the majority of the brands were new to me.

My first recommendation when shopping online for flea medications, whether it is over the counter or prescription, is to be sure that you find a reputable online store.

In my research, I was disturbed by the comments I found regarding those who exercised less caution, and their pups paid the price.

Overall, I think Chewy.com offers the most competitive pricing for pet medications, especially with auto-ship.

However, as you can see above, I did note three common flea medications and who had the best pricing for each.

The drawback of ordering medicine online is that there are two delays.

The first delay would be for the prescription to be verified, and the second would be for the shipping.

Neither delays would be something you would deal with when picking up flea medication from your vet. 

Conclusion

Having three dogs is expensive, and I am all for saving money, but not at the expense of my dogs’ health.

However, after researching online shopping, I found that I could save over $100 a year on flea preventative and almost $900 a year on all other medications by buying their medication online!

My final thought is that it is well worth the time to shop around for flea medications.

Big Hero 7: The Series

Big Hero 7 Season 2

The calm before the storm

*Nimble hands set up a camera to record a video, to which it finally shows Cora Mizichio in her living room. She lets out a deep breath before she smiles up at the camera.*

Cora: Hi! It's me again! Wow,a lot of things has happened since I started this video diary, and let me tell you: It was a very insane, yet stupidly awesome ride.

*She pulls out her phone and soon starts a montage of video clips she recorded showing herself and her boyfriend and friends as both themselves and super heroes.*

Cora: Turns out Baymax saved his chip in a rocket first to which Hiro and I decided to rebuild Baymax, but when one glitch caused his body to run around like a lunatic. Didn't help that Yama held Baymax's skeleton and yours truly as hostages for Hiro to do his dirty work on stealing something from Professor Grandville's desk, *Mutters under breathe* more on her later*clear voice*. Because of that it lead to Gogo, Fred, Honey Lemon, and Wasabi to help Hiro rescue us and make it home safely. But when Yama released an army of Boot legged Baymaxes to steal the thing; that was the night we all realized we can be way more. So we put on our suits and stopped the army, stopped Yama, and destroyed the thing. Since that night we became Big Hero 7!

*Cora smiles brightly to herself as she shows the official picture of themselves as super heroes that show their super hero names: Electro-Magnetic Alpha(Hiro), Aqua Girl(Cora), Omega Danger(Baymax), Chemistry Princess(Honey Lemon), Velocity(Gogo), Fredzilla(Fred Frederickson IV) and Blades Master(Wasabi). Then the clips start showing people they met along the way*

Cora: We've met a lot of new people since then, both as supers and students. There's Professor Grandville; a strict but fair dean who is more than what she seemed, Professor Seto my Bio teacher, Mole the pest that bothers Fred and Gogo and deserves a good butt-kicking, *Shows clip of Karmi*… Someone who also deserves a good butt kicking for her behavior to Hiro and I. Esmeralda the fashion major student from SFAI and the woman partially responsible for me going to bot fighting, Commander Carter who got us our super hero licenses along with Mr. Frederickson; both who help young supers get their license to protect them and assist them in whatever mission they are in. Tela-Patty the telepathic girl, Laser blast who uses, you guessed it, laser beams, Sparrow the archer who can hit any target. Finally there's Ice Frost, she can freeze anything and survive subzero temperatures, and who we learned is Miyuki Frost, an animation major student at SFAI. And as any hero can face, there's our Rouge Gsllery: High Voltage, the Mother-Daughter electric dancing crime duo. Globby, a man transformed into a -Globby- mess after a poor choice to steal Honey's chem purse was made. Momakase, a skilled thief and sushi chef who...turned out to be connected to my Papa, and Noodle Burger Boy was an innocent bot before he was hacked and reprogrammed by one man.

*Cora paused as she thinks over what to say next, her smile fading away as she thought about him, along with the memories came a whirlwind of emotions that clash against each other. Finally she looks up and speaks again with a determined brow on her face.*

Cora: A man named Obake, a very intelligent...and very dangerous, mentally stable man whose circumstances turned him into one of our most dangerous villains we ever faced … his birth name was Bob Aken, an orphan... but he was adopted into a Yakuza Clan where he gained a father, a mother...and a brother. He was renamed Kage Mizichio...and his brother... is my father, Mizuchi Mizichio. The heir of the Mizichio Yakuza Clan. The Demonic Titan. *Rubbing her arms as she swallows tightly* Their story was at first innocent and happy... but when their father, Isamu...my grandfather died; Nozako, their mother...*Gulps* My grandmother...took over and immediately darkened their world. They had a strong bond like Hiro and Tadashi, but Nozako's plans for my father and abuse to Kage forced them apart. In the end they both escaped... Kage twice since... he wasn't very successful the first time.

*Cora pulls out two photos, one showing a young Kage with a younger Professor Grandville, and the second photo showing him with a girl that bears a striking resemblance to Cora; save for the freckles, green eyes, and long strawberry blonde hair.*

Cora: With the help of my Papa he managed to get secret classes at SFIT where Professor Grandville protected him and encouraged him to grow. And there's Chara Bonete… she was just a highschool student who met Kage and they... fell in love. But when Kage tried to build an energy amplifier without anyone knowing it exploded. He survived because... Nozako's workers found him as doctors. She punished him by dropping him out of school...and taking away Chara's life. That was when Kage's bond with my papa snapped. Papa's escape was by accident. He was sent on a mission by Kage to retrieve a very powerful medicine that could cure all diseases and heal all wounds. He was supposed to also kill the herbal medicine maker and her daughter to hide any evidence... instead.. he fell in love with her, the daughter of the herbal medicine doctor...my mama. With patience, determination, and love. Papa regained his hope and faith and his connection with Mama grew deeper. But he knew that anytime Nozako could return and harm them, or worse, turn them into her own puppets like she did with him. So he faked his death. After Mama saved him with the very same medicine that he was supposed to steal, he ran away with Mama and Grandmama to San Fransokyo where they hidden themselves and the potion away from the world and from Nozako's reach...even me. But because of Papa's 'Death'... that lead to Nozako blaming Kage for his mission. He was kicked out of the only home he ever had, and since he didn't know Papa was alive he couldn't call for help. All those years of abuse, hate, and mistreatment turned him into a monster... a monster bent on Destroying San Fransokyo to rebuild it to his image, reclaim back his home from Nozako… and mistaking me for Chara. Thankfully Hiro and the gang saved me and stopped him from succeeding his plan. And by some miracle...Papa saved him. He convinced Commander Carter to get Kage help to not only receive treatment for his mental health, but to also get the surgery for his brain damage. A shard from the energy amplifier he built long ago struck his head...and Nozako left it in there to make him suffer. And now...

*Cora pulls out a letter her family received the other day and shows the contents of it.*

Cora: This letter says that Kage had shown significant recovery in both his surgery and his counseling that he's cleared to go home.. and by home I mean here. And the day he's gonna join us is also the day the new semester of SFIT starts. That alone is a shock cause... Hiro and I had been in SFIT for a semester. We've made it this far into our lives and relationship... But that leaves us with something.. what happens now? Kage can't be left alone, and he has to do something. Papa mentioned that he would talk to Grandville when he comes along. Thankfully the first Baymax is gonna join us and help Kage. *Whispers into Camera* That's another story for another time. *Clear voice* We got our answers to this questions we'd thought we would never ask and got closure. But a part of me feels that there's more that my family isn't telling me; I know why Papa had been overprotective of me before but...Grandmama never really told me why they lived in Muirahara woods for so long, or even how Grandmama made such a powerful medicine in the first place. And there's been someone at SFIT that's been seeing 'you know who' a lot...and she gives me a bad feeling inside me... but if we survived Obake and all these crazy things, I'm sure we can deal with whatever happens to us in the future. We're in this together through hell and back.

*Cora smiles brightly as she saves the video and shuts it off to prepare for bed. As she prepares her futon after texting Hiro goodnight with a heart emoji, the moon shines brightly above the bay of San Fransokyo. The waves crashing to the shore along with the pale glow of the moon gives off an aura of great beauty...and great danger. and it shines through not only Cora's window, but to Hiro's as well, then to the rest of the gang, to Mizuchi, to Kaguya...and finally ending it with Kage Mizichio. All of them unaware of their future ahead.*

From the outside, it looks like the race to get into the cannabis space is available only to people with enough capital to pay cash for a five-bedroom home. But in reality, there are a ton of thriving businesses in all segments of the cannabis market that started with a great idea and just a piggy bank of savings. Here are three companies that bootstrapped their way to success from an initial investment of $5,000 or less -- in fact, way less -- plus advice from the founders on how you can do it, too.

 Fruit Slabs

The founders: The creation of Roxanne Dennant and Brian Cona, Fruit Slabs are basically like middle-­school-style fruit leathers: chewy, ultrahealthy kosher snacks infused with 100 milligrams of THC and made from 100 percent USDA-certified organic ingredients. The company sells four flavors, including Grape Ape and Mango Maui Wowie; a new collab with drag queen Laganja Estranja, called Pride Passion Fruit, is hitting shelves soon.

How much they started with: Less than $1,000.

What they did with it: Bought equipment and materials.

Their origin story: Dennant was working in the denim world, and her longtime friend Cona was in cultivation; the duo were dabbling with consuming edibles but disappointed that they couldn’t find products that fit their healthy lifestyle. So, after buying cooking equipment, they started experimenting in their kitchens, making concoctions from the organic ingredients they liked to eat. Once they nailed their first batch of Fruit Slabs, they sold them to friends and family, and reinvested the money into their second batch. Since founding the company in 2015, Dennant and Cona have continued the same bootstrapping strategy, without taking any outside investment money. And it has worked. The product is in 65 stores in Cali and will expand to Washington soon.

The biggest hurdle: Trying to upsell a new product when they launched. Fruit Slabs’ organic ingredients make it more expensive than most edibles -- and therefore more expensive to sell, even wholesale. “In 2015, it was a very raw industry,” Dennant says. “You could walk in [to a dispensary] with a Rice Krispies treat you made in your own home that was wrapped in cellophane…and get five dollars out the door.” But the price of Fruit Slabs? “People would look at me like I had 10 heads.” Today expectations have really changed, she says. “A lot of shops won’t even take an edible if it doesn’t have some type of vegan, gluten-free, or kosher dietary specification -- because people are shopping in that manner.”

And the best lesson learned: When a business is starting out, says Dennant, “you can’t make that $2,000 packaging and screw up, and be like, ‘Oh, it’s [only] $2,000.’ It’s like: ‘Two thousand dollars -- how are we going to recover from that?’” After facing a few such setbacks due to bad partners, she and Cona realized that vetting whom you work with is critical. That’s true even as the industry becomes more regulated. “Whether you’re working with a license partner, a distribution partner, a packaging partner, or a co-manufacturing partner,” she says, “really learning what that partnership is going to bring you in the beginning, and getting term sheets written, setting deadlines for the people and not just the vendor you’re working with -- that’s been a big [lesson] along the way.”

Plant People

The founders: Plant People sells CBD tinctures, capsules, and salves made with cannabinoids and other beneficial herbs. “Our mission is to heal and connect people and the planet through the power of plants,” says Gabe Kennedy, who started the company with Hudson Gaines-Ross.

How much they started with: $5,000.

What they did with it: Developed their product and got it out the door.

Their origin story: Longtime friends Kennedy, a chef, and Gaines-Ross, a CPG entrepreneur, were on a hike when they started talking about something they had in common: back surgeries. They’d both been unhappy with the care they’d gotten from traditional Western medicine. Kennedy knew there were other options. He grew up with parents who are acupuncturists; his mother is also a Chinese herbalist, and his dad, a chiropractor. And he leveraged that knowledge to get Plant People’s initial inventory off the ground. “We began packing herbal capsules in our kitchens, used stickers as packaging labels, and gave product away to our friends and families to get feedback, learn, and iterate,” says Kennedy. “These grassroots efforts really worked out for us, as people responded well and started asking for more Plant People. We were overwhelmed by the demand.”

The company launched in 2018. “I had a lot of experience building products from seed to sale, so we hit the ground running,” Kennedy says. “Hudson fortunately had a ton of experience building brands and has the networks that provide a voice for those brands. We tapped our friends at Juice Press, Bumble, Vice, Vogue, etc. [for help getting the word out].” 

In addition, they decided that with every sale, they’d plant a tree to support their mission of saving the world through plants. “We hope to someday be responsible for planting more than 10 million trees,” says Kennedy. “We’re not too far off!”

The biggest hurdle: Product sourcing. “We don’t white-label anything,” Kennedy says, so being able to set up a really robust supply chain with partners operating with integrity was a challenge. He dealt with it by continuing to be curious and asking questions about everything from “how people are treating their employees to what their extracting methods look like and how they are capturing solvents,” he says. “We continually did research and didn’t say yes to the first people we came across.” 

The other hurdle was payment processing. Like many startups in the industry, they had to get around the banks’ and financial firms’ reluctance to work with cannabis products. “We’ve had five credit card processors to date,” says Kennedy. “We’ve seen the worst -- 6 percent credit card fees, 10 percent rolling reserves, international declines -- and we’ve seen the best. We’re now with a standard processor that treats us as if we’re any other non-­cannabis brand. We couldn’t be more grateful. And we’re in talks with one of the largest banks in the world about taking over our credit card processing. We never thought we’d be in such conversations.”

And the best lesson learned: “To make decisions and move forward has been such great learning,” says Kennedy. “You make a decision, and you do your best -- it may not be the most perfect decision, but it’s better than not making one at all. What I really learned about bootstrapping is that it’s just putting one foot in front of the other, and oftentimes it’s two steps forward and one and a half steps back--but I have to keep stepping forward.”

Gofire

The founders: Peter Calfee and John Woodbine started Gofire with the goal of creating the perfect vaporizer -- one that delivers the exact dosage promised. But eventually, they grew the company to also include the Gofire Suite, a database of medical uses for cannabis broken down by the chemicals ingested, the time of day they should be consumed, and the dosage that’s most beneficial; the data can then be accessed by physicians to give patients.

How much they started with: $200.

What they did with it: Bribed a local college student to gain access to a 3-D printer at Calfee’s school, which they needed to create their prototype -- and then they used that to get a first round of funding.

Their origin story: In 2014, Woodbine, who’d dabbled in the music and food businesses before working at a dispensary, approached Calfee, who was doing IT and alternative medicine consulting work, and tried to talk him into building the perfect vaporizer. Initially, Calfee wasn’t interested. But he eventually changed his mind when he realized that there was a market for a more perfectly attuned vaporizer and that his background in the health field could be a perfect fit.  

The biggest hurdle: Right after the company raised its first $25,000 in a friends-and-family round, Calfee nearly died in a car crash when the person driving had a seizure. “That was when John and I came together and said, ‘Listen: Whatever this takes, whatever we have to go through to build this, we will achieve this,’” Calfee says. After that, there was a fire under them to get it done. 

The accident effectively put the project on hold. But it also led to Gofire’s second product. While recovering from a broken back, Calfee discovered that the opioids he was being prescribed didn’t help as much as the cannabis he was consuming, which is when the idea for the database took root. As soon as he could, Calfee worked on their next round; it took a year, but they got $750,000 to help them grow the business. This year, they’re finally bringing it to market with a beta launch that has garnered tens of thousands of reviews. “There’s no better reward than a patient telling us how we’ve helped to improve their life,” he says.

And the best lesson learned: “There are always going to be obstacles, but they’re just that,” says Calfee. “You’ve got to find a way around [them] -- if it’s a physical ailment, if you break your back, or the bottom’s falling out in the economy, or whatever the situation you’re up against. I believe being a true entrepreneur is not taking no for an answer, and not being able to give up.” 

Also this: Treat your team like your peers. “We have 25 employees,” Calfee says, “and we all own stock in the company.” Unsurprisingly, that gives each of them a drive Calfee couldn’t have necessarily found in salary-only employees. When Calfee calls for a possible meet-up in the office on a Sunday afternoon, often the reply is “‘Oh, I’m already here,’” he says. “You can’t buy that.”

The new hype about CBD

Products containing the hemp ingredient cannabidiol, short CBD, are readily available.

They are considered supplements and are therefore not as strictly controlled as medicines.

The legal situation is unclear; also the health effects are not well researched.

At Munich Central Station it now smells of marijuana more often. Dried hemp flowers, hemp oil, chocolate and lollipops you can buy without a prescription in a small shop next to a supermarket. The decor is reminiscent of a hipster business, the counter is white, the retro cabinets could have come from an old pharmacy. No "Bob Marley" poster hangs on the wall, and the seller does not wear dreadlocks.

And the THC is missing, the substance that gives cannabis its intoxicating effect. Instead, everything contains cannabidiol, short CBD.

The molecule comes from the female hemp plant and has anti-inflammatory, anxiolytic and relaxing, also on the muscles. It binds to receptors in the endocannabinoid system of the body. While THC provides activating and psychoactive intoxication in cannabis, CBD is the calming and neuroprotective equivalent. Three drops dripped under the tongue, and nervousness, headaches, and inflammation disappear - at least that's what many consumers promise. The dark green hemp oil is presented as a capsule or in drops, it tastes bitter with herbal seasoning, reminiscent of the smell of damp soil or moss.

The habituation-needy taste does not diminish the hype. In New York, the sudden spread of CBD-displaced foods such as cocktails, brownies, and coffees is so out of control that the authorities impose fines on restaurants and cafés that make their menu CBD appealing. Also in Germany, you can buy CBD at the drugstore, start-ups and shops are shooting up in big cities. The Coca-Cola Corporation recently expressed interest in possible cannabinoid drinks.

Consumers cheer in Internet forums, CBD has freed them from depression, muscle spasms, and chronic joint pain.

At the same time, disappointing pain patients report that they have no effect on the cannabis remedy. Many also wonder if CBD oil is not illegal. Some see CBD as a serious drug or natural product, others as a new, dangerous legal high.

 Adding to the confusion is that dealers of CBD oil in Germany are not allowed to recommend or list dosages, which causes CBD. The products are considered as dietary supplements and therefore may not have a pronounced pharmacological effect and can not be used therapeutically. At the same time the control is eliminated: for drugs must be an effect demonstrated, for dietary supplements not. Also, the composition is not regulated to the same extent. An ideal mixed situation for cheaters, who smell the fast business.

In fact, many online store products do not live up to their promises, as recent researchers from Italy have shown by sampling. For around two out of three of the products purchased in Europe, the CBD content on the label did not match the content. Some did not contain any CBD, one more THC than allowed. This was also fatal to traders in Munich a few days ago, as about 180 police officers searched various hemp shops, including the one at the main station. Suspicion: too much THC in the products.

There is also uncertainty in Brussels. The EU is currently discussing whether CBD is a novel food, a novel food. The directive states that all food imported and consumed after 1997 must be tested before it is allowed to enter the market. Manufacturers of CBD would face millions in licensing costs and lengthy procedures - for each product.

"If the hemp extract has the same natural concentration as the crop, it should not be a novel food, according to EU directives," says Lorenza Romanesque, spokeswoman for the European Industrial Hemp Association. The origin of the oils probably plays a role: some are not pressed from hemp, but are edible oils, which were artificially buried CBD crystals. As a result, they could no longer be a natural hemp product, but could be considered "novel food".

Changes to the Medical Marijuana Program of Illinois

The Alternative to Opioids Act, which allows patients to potentially use cannabis in place of opiates, was signed into law in Illinois in August. To become a patient in this new program, one must apply at a local health department or dispensary and pay a $10 fee. Patients then must be approved before starting the program.

Every 90 days patients will need to check in with a doctor to be able to continue their medical cannabis use. License renewal will also be required just as often. While other, more addictive and life-threatening drugs like opioids only need a new prescription, you will have to renew your license every 90 days for this herb as well as visit a doctor. This is, arguably, an added hassle for those who wish to make the switch from opioids to cannabis.

However, the act does undo the previous requirement for patients and caregivers to send in fingerprints and background checks as part of the application process. This will allow many more people access to pain relief that will not end in an overdose. Dispensaries are looking forward to medicinal marijuana becoming better accepted among physicians after the pilot program of The Alternative to Opioids Act.

“It (the pilot program) is opening the conversation with physicians as well, hopefully as it grows more physicians will be comfortable with this alternative to opioids,”  stated manager of member services, Catalina Castillo, from Herbal Care Center in Chicago.

Patients hoping to get a medical marijuana card in Illinois have struggled with a long wait in the past. This will now change for former opioid users in the Alternative Opioids to Act. In place of the usual, plastic medicinal cannabis card, patients will be sent a registration certification in their Email. Patients can simply keep the registration information in their phone or print it out to have in their wallets. They will then be able to buy marijuana right after registering by using this certification at dispensaries while their official application is still processing.  The patient will be able to buy medicinal cannabis and wait to be truly accepted or denied.

According to public health researchers, marijuana doesn’t have as many of the same harmful overall effects that opioids have, though both can treat chronic pain. The odds of dying from an opioid overdose are now higher than that of a car crash. States that have legalized medicinal cannabis have seen a 25% decrease in opioid-related overdoses. In a world where the opioid crisis continues to be a real concern for patients who need safe relief for pain, cannabis appears to be more than a fair alternative.

With the passing of the Alternative to Opioids Act, is an increase in medical marijuana business growth in Illinois. One Massachusetts based-company, Ascend Wellness, has already leased property within the state of Illinois to serve the now larger population of medicinal marijuana users. Ascend Wellness is also expected to increase job opportunities in Illinois.
