Starck contrast
The year was 1984.
A rich kid from Preston Hollow created a Studio 54 for the landlocked on a dicey stretch of McKinney Avenue.
The stories were legendary: People had sex in the bathroom. They did ecstasy, which was legal, and cocaine, which was not. The place was designed by Philippe Starck, aFrench architect who’d given his name to cool chairs that were wildly uncomfortable (the place had a few).
Stevie Nicks was part owner, though people rarely saw her during the club’s five-year run.
They did see Prince, Oliver Stone and Rob Lowe.
Clubgoers lined up to get inside. They wanted the scene, but they needed the music.
Punk, post-punk and new wave, spun on vinyl by real, living humans who knew more about obscure artists and B-sides than Casey Kasem could ever hope to learn.
The live shows were epic: Australian noise band SPK, New York art monster Grace Jones, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.
Video was projected onto the walls, because avirtual dreamworld still felt like a novelty.
Nobody knew screens and media would rise up like atidal wave and swallow us whole. You should have been there. And for one night only, May 12, you (sort of) can be when the Starck Club returns for a 40th anniversary party, thanks to the good folks behind the Longhorn Ballroom and the Kessler Theater, which is the far more civilized setting for this bash.
Of course, the event is already sold out, giving wannabe clubgoers the familiar experience of getting shut out ofthe best party in town.
Details: 6-11 p.m. May 12 at the Kessler Theater,1230 W. Davis St., Dallas.
Stalling for time FROM THE ARCHIVES In 1985, the now-acclaimed Texas Monthly writer Skip Hollandsworth contributed astory toThe Dallas Morning News about how men's rooms in Dallas were having amoment—avery opulent moment. He noted the upholstered walls ($70 per square yard) inside the gentlemen's lounge atCafe Pacific inHighland Park Village. He praised The Mansion on Turtle Creek's "hand-cast sink fixtures and commodes with comfy seats."Buthewas most gobsmacked by the facilities at the city's hottest dance spot: "The newly opened Starck Club downtown may be the only nightclub in Western civilization that has gotten national attention for its bathrooms. The facilities look like a combination video game, church parlor, hair salon and somebody's idea of a great practical joke. "The mirror-encased lobbies of both themen's andwomen's rooms arecoed. Everybody sits around high-tech couches and talks and smokes cigarettes. Occasionally, someone may get up to actually use the facilities. "There is a television monitor abovethecathedral-likedoor thatleads to the stalls.Likearrival-departure screens at the airport, the monitor tells you which stall is occupied. Each stall is setoff in its own separateroom large enough to startan impromptu game of handball." Hollandsworth spoke with valet attendant Herman Babers, 60, who worked the men's lounge at another showy nightclub, Mistral, inside the then-Loews Anatole Hotel. "I always thought you were supposed to pop inand out of abathroom," Babers told him. "But these men today like to come in and brush their hair and think about things, I guess." Christopher Wynn"The facilities look like a combination videogame, church parlor, hair salon and somebody's idea of a great practical joke."
For One Night Only, the Kessler Theater Turns Into the Starck Club The infamous night club in the West End opened its doors 40 years ago. The Kessler Theater is bringing it back to life, briefly. The scene at the Starck Club during its peak.
New York City had Studio 54, London had the Hippodrome, and Dallas had The Starck Club. The West End venue, named for its Parisian designer Philippe Starck, defined the nightlife scene in Dallas throughout the 80s and reveled in the excesses of the decadent decade, powered by a new and curious drug called ecstasy. DJ Mark Ridlen says there’s more to The Starck Club than meets history’s narrow eye, a cultural touchstone that meant far more than the unchecked libido of the clubgoers. “All they talk about is the drug busts, ‘Who shot J.R.?,’ and the 80s but you’ve never seen a club with such an eclectic lineup over the years whether it was a band, fashion shows, plays, performance art,” Ridlen says. “You name it. They had it.” The Kessler is bringing back The Starck Club for its 40th anniversary reunion by transforming into the venue for five hours on Sunday May 12 into a new version of the influential Dallas nightclub. Kessler Artistic Director Jeff Liles said the event sold quickly: it took less than a week to sell out. It is not dissimilar to the venue’s tribute to the long-gone Video Bar, a room that was influential in the avant-garde scene of the 1980s. “We love paying homage to the venues that made Dallas culture what it was,” Liles says. “It was happening right at the same time as the emergence of the Deep Ellum scene.” Club founder Blake Woodall opened his vision of a hip, technology-filled nightlife spot in 1984 under a Woodall Rodgers overpass near the West End in a converted warehouse space. The first official show for the club’s investors brought Grace Jones and Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks to its stage. They were the first of many celebrities to walk through its doors, early adopters before Rob Lowe and Princess Stephanie of Monaco. Talking Heads’ David Byrne dropped in while in town to film his movie True Stories. Members of the famed Brat Pack who starred in movies like The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink spent evenings there. Prince even hosted an after party at Starck one night that went “well into the morning,” according to David Hynds, who ran the club’s video and art department with his then wife, Suzie Riddle. Word of mouth spread mostly by hairdressers to their clients helped build the club’s reputation as a fashion hot spot for the late-night partier. The Starck Club’s popularity started with some exclusivity but eventually, it wasn’t a place where you had to argue with a bouncer to convince them you were important enough to go past the velvet rope. “Initially, it seemed to have an upper-end feel to it but as time went on, we attracted a much broader range of customers,” Hynds says. “Part of the design and desire was to have a complete mix of all spectrums of people.” The space wasn’t just used for live music, dancing, and the occasional hit of what we now call Molly. The Starck Club was one giant canvas that a got a new coat of paint every evening. “We had these funky theme parties,” Ridlen says. “We would make it look like a grocery store or we would make it look like a rodeo. We’d have these fun themes with appropriate music. We’d always have video exhibits, people showing their art videos. We had events just for that.” ADVERTISEMENT
The club’s first theme party took on the psychedelic. Hynds asked Ridlen if he would create a band that fit its far-out theme. Ridlen’s band was named Lithium X-Mas and the group stayed together long after the club’s closing. “It was only meant to be a one-time deal but a few months down the road, they decided they would carry it forward under that name,” Hynds says. The Starck Club served as a kind of zeitgeist thermometer for its time that reflected changing trends and new sounds. “It was the beginning of the DJ culture in Dallas,” Liles says. The events on the club’s calendar weren’t just concerts. The Starck Club would host fashion shows, plays, and all kinds of performance art. “It was a hotbed of all kinds of just really cool activities under one roof,” Ridlen says. “You would come and see that and then, of course, stick around the music.” No ideas was too off the wall for the Starck Club. Hynds had everyone on the staff pitch ideas for shows, theme nights, and artistic expressions. “One of the things we did was a furniture fashion show,” Hynds says. “It had the basic design of a fashion show instead of clothing, we had people dressed as furniture movers bringing up furniture. Me and Suzie and [Greg Snyodis] from Lithium X-Mas had the idea of doing a band but instead of audio or music, it was visual. Instead of musical instruments, we used visual instruments.” So no recreation of the Starck Club would be complete without a reconstruction of its eclectic style. Camron Ware, the owner and founder of Lightware Labs who provided the visual tech for The Kessler’s recreation of the Video Bar, will work with Hines to turn the Kessler into a visual recreation of the Starck Club. “It’s going to feel like it’s all really immersive when you come in,” Liles says. “There’s going to be a red carpet and everything. We’re really gonna trick out The Kessler that night.” The Kessler turns into the Starck Club for one night only, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. on May 12. Tickets are sold out, but keep your eye on this page. 1230 W. Davis St.

Since I was tagged by both @alex-dax and @klarionthewizard, here’s a bunch of sentences (I didn’t count them lol)
“Are you sure we can’t persuade you to change this speech?” Moustache asked Jerjerrod, crossing his arms over his chest. “This one just doesn’t have the same pizzazz.”
“Have you ever actually met General Veers?” Motti asked, arching an eyebrow. “He’s practically the opposite of ‘pizzazz.’”
“It spends far too much time honouring those who fought and not nearly enough time talking about crushing the Rebellion,” Shorty added. “It’s hardly going to inspire the masses to join up to serve the Empire.”
“I don’t see why we need to be inspiring anyone if there’s a draft,” Zev muttered under his breath.
“Watch your language, Cadet,” Moustache growled. “I’d hate to be reporting you to ISB…”
“Oh I’m sure you would,” Zev replied, “because then you’d lose your puppet. But two people already saw through your ruse, and anyone who knows anything about my father will immediately know he wouldn’t say this shit.”
“He does have a point,” Blue Eyes, the COMPNOR officer primarily responsible for coaching Zev on his cadence and accent, pointed out. “If you actually listened to any of the General’s speeches, you’d know he isn’t the sort to use superfluous language or gratuitous exaggerations.”
“Well yes, but-“
“General Veers wrote this speech,” Jerjerrod interrupted, waving his datapad to emphasize his point, “while high on morphine and coming off anaesthesia, and it still sounds better than the one you had Zevulon give last night. With the missing words and the tangents, even.”
“I assume you cut out the tirade about Colonel Starck?” Zev asked, smirking.
“And the bit about Denonian Floral arrangements,” Jerjerrod replied. “It was poetic, but rather irrelevant, unfortunately.”
I don’t know who all has been tagged lately so if you see this and you have a wip please share :)
Heads Up Seven Up
Thanks @gracehosborn for the tag!
Rules: post the last seven lines you wrote! Then tag others!
From The Secret Portal Part Two:
Dr. Asghar sighed, looked at her watch. “It’s about time for everyone to get up. Go wait in the dining hall for Hye-Jin.” “Hye-Jin?” I repeated. “I never mentioned our plans to eat breakfast today.” “We’re a lot more alike than we initially thought,” Dr. Asghar mused. Confused, I slowly left the lab and headed down the hall to the elevator.
Hehehe this makes more sense in context but some may be able to figure it out

Would you be so kind? | Thoma
Genre: hurt/comfort (angst if you squint)
Paring: Thoma x reader
Warning(s): slight mention of blood/injury.
Side note: I'm not even sure what this is, um. I don't normally erite anything that heavily implies romance yet here we are yeahhhh im so tired. HOPE YALL LIKE THIS!
Not proofread, sorry about the spelling mistakes.
Posted on: 26/ July/ 2022
With motion posessing the delicacy of an angel and hands as tender as the moistened leaves of morning rain, Thoma wrapped the cleansed white cloth around the flreshly obtained wound, staining the flawless color of the fabric with the crimson fluid oozing out. Carefully, he signetured the make-shift bandage with a tight knot, in order to stop the bleeding for good.
You jolted when he gave the knot a curt tug, features scrucnhing up while you quilled back your grunt of pain. Your eyes fluttered open, fixed on the polished wooden tiles below you. You were almost lost by how perfect they were, all strawn together in faultless unison.
Their sight was captivating, you thought. Or maybe you were simply too tired, or maybe you were trying not to look down at your bandaged arm. You knew if you had, the agony would only increase, even if gruesome sight had been already masked with the white rag.
"(Y/n)?" Thoma's voice pulled you out of your hazefull stupor. You felt your chest tighten at the sound of his voice. Warm and thoughtful. Like a feild of lavender flowers, basking in its gratifying smell.
"Yes, Thoma?" It was a miracle you were able to keep your tone so steady. You continued to stare down at the floor, avoiding his blazing gaze. You needn't glance at him to know what expression he held. It was one of sadness, you assumed, worrisome and of course, concern, he was always concerned when it came to you, he was always so worried about you.
"Will you look at me?" He muttered. You didn't miss the sharp inhale he drew in. It made him sound nervous. You gulped back whatever had made its way up your throat and lifted your head up, locking eyes with him.
"Of course." You breathed out. As soon as you had made eyecontact with him, you wanted to tear your gaze away. Just as you assumed. Sadness, worried, concern, all in one expression. However, there was one that you hadn't guessed. Adoreness. Love. The longer you stared at his features, the faster your heart paced.
"are you ok?" It was such a simple question, so why did it feel like an anvil had just plummeted down on you? Your smile wavered, but only for a moment.
"I'm fine, Thoma. It was just a cut, it'll heal. Don't worry." You reassured.
"how can I not worry?" He whispered, his eyes lighting with further caring sentiment. Your brows drew inward, your smile faltering as you stared at him with starck worry. "There isn't a time where I'll ever stop worrying about you.
"I love you. I love you more than I've ever loved anyone else. It hurts so much to see you in pain. Watching you hurt feels like walking over glass." You hadn't expected him to spill so much. You hadn't wanted him to spill so much. He reached out for your uninjured hand, holding it gently before pulling it against his chest.
"And I love you so much more!" You exclaimed, jumping forward a bit. Though he didn't react. he simply continued to stare at you with misty eyes, his lips pursed together ever so slightly. You tried to steady your breathing, in an attempt to keep your feelings suppressed. "So please don't-"
"I don't want to see you like this anymore. I don't like seeing you try to hide your pain because you know it'll worry me. I'm so scared for you, (Y/n), please, don't let me see you like this anymore." He tightened his grip around your hand. All you could do was stare at him wordlessly, your chest visibly moving up and down while your breathing quickened.
"I'd do anything for you. I'll do anything for you." The onky thing you could focus on was the fondness consuming his eyes. He slowly guided your hand up to his mouth, his lips brushing against the back of your hand and planting a fleeting kiss, his eyes shut and face tight with sorrowness. With his lips pressed against your hand, he murmured. "Please. Let me protect you."

y'all, I am getting REAL tired of seeing posts with Encanto characters' names misspelled.
Agustín- only one u, accent over the t
Julieta- ONE t, y'all (her name is NOT Julietta)
Isabela- ONE L, (not Isabella)
Luisa- no o
Mirabel- one L, one e. Not Mirabelle and not Maribel either.
Pepa- one p
Félix- accent over the e. Not Felíx or Felix
Dolores- not Delores
Camilo- one L
Antonio- this one I don't see many errors, but for the love of the gods this kid is 5yo... Stop shipping him with anyone.
--
Spelling their names wrong or Anglicizing them is racist. It just is.
And it reeks of colonialism.
You don't necessarily have to have language and naming conventions of another culture memorized, but all their names and spellings are in the end credits of the movie.
It's been out long enough that you can check before you post something.
I don't care if you didn't mean to be racist, or you didn't mean to spell it wrong... At this point, if you're still doing it, it means that you didn't bother to look. To check.
...and if people started writing fic about Stephen Roggers and Tonie Starck, the level of outrage would be off the charts.
(While we're at it, stop lightening the Madrigals' skin tones when making fanart too. And stop making their eyes blue and their noses tiny. This is also racist as FUCK.)

UnShaunte DeFox is a hot obnoxious mess of couture and a punk-funk rebel.
The Dallas illusionist tests the mettle of the Miss Texas of America pageant
By DANIEL KUSNER | Aug. 29, 2008
DeShaun Elliot was a young teen when he first saw Grace Jones, dripping in foxtails while performing "Do or Die" on "Dance Fever. "
youtube
And the little gay boy from Wichita Falls was immediately obsessed, "Here was this beautiful, ugly, blue-black, mysterious, tough chick. She was a super-freak. And she had this power — she seduced everyone," Elliot remembers,
"She became known for telling people to fuck off. She'd slap people during interviews."
That was more than 25 years ago.
Now 40, Elliot has created another persona — UnShaunte DeFox, a drag illusionist molded in the freaky tradition of Grace Jones.
In fact, the "fox" part of DeFox was inspired by the foxtails Grace Wore on "Dance Fever."
On Sundays, DeFox is a regular entertainer at Elm & Pearl, and on Wednesdays he regularly performs at Woody's Sports Bar & Video.
But he's not a traditional pantsuit diva who tries to master Celine Dion's subtle nuances.
In fact, most of the Dallas drag queens tell Elliot that his performances might fare better in New York.
"I've been known to put microphones in my mouth. During my routine, I'll kiss girls on the mouth. I'll drink people's drinks or lick their straws. I'll chew dollar-bill tips and then spit them out. One time, I swallowed the dollar and then opened my mouth, and stuck out my tongue to prove it," Elliot explains.
He says that Dallas' drag scene has a stereotype.
"There's lots of silicone — and cliques. I'm the different one. But I'm not a bitch. I'm very nice to the other drag queens, and they're nice to me. They tell me they think I'm extraordinary," he explains. "I'm not a drag queen because I'm transgender. To me, being an illusionist is an art form."
He says drag doesn't always have to be elegant.
"It's boring to just try and look like a woman. Drag is being bigger than life. When I see drag, I want people to drop from the ceiling. I want them to lick the floor," he says:
DeFox's aggressive performances are complimented with outre fashions that he designs himself.
"Sickening illusions — like having my entire face and neck done in mirrors with bull horns sticking out of my head," he explains.
During a recent photo shoot, he donned a silver lame gown with a futuristic mirrored hat with a brim that covered just one eye.
There was also an enormous matching cape with hood, billowed armholes and sleeves with five-foot extensions.
Being the weirdo in Dallas' drag scene seems to be working.
It's even working on the pageant circuit.
DeFox is Miss Gay Dallas of America 2008, and she recently handed over her crown for Miss Texas Latino American 2007.
On Thursday, she begins chasing after the Miss Texas of America tiara.
In order to maintain the surprise of her show, she can't divulge her routine.
But it will involve 15 backup dancers, a fierce Grace Jones homage, a doppelganger — and probably her tongue licking something.

Dallas’ Starck Club’s 40th anniversary reunion: ‘A Temple of Future People’ visit the past
Dallas’ decadent ‘80s club was a Studio 54 for Dallas, a moment that defined the era. For one night only, the moment was back.

The marquee above the Kessler Theater read THE STARCK CLUB, but when I arrived on a rainy Sunday at 7:45 p.m., the only sign of anything unusual was a woman near the entrance in a hot pink coat of gauzy ruffles that looked so fashion-forward you could practically tip it to the ground.
A giant pink bow in her sleek black hair, paired with combat boots.
“Get on in here,” said Jeff Liles, maestro of the Starck 40th anniversary reunion, opening the door to the Kessler in his old black T-shirt and blond dreds.
And with that, I entered the matrix.

Exactly 40 years ago, on May 12, 1984, the Starck Club opened its silver doors near the West End, transforming an abandoned warehouse into an epic space of billowy white curtains and black terrazzo tile.
Gender-neutral bathrooms were so big that clubgoers had sex in the stalls, and if that’s only a myth, please don’t tell me. (It’s not.)
The club’s name evoked New York’s Stork Club as well as the apt description “stark” — bold colors, bracing soundscapes, looping visuals — but mostly it summoned the designer Philippe Starck, who left his native France in the early ‘80s to build a temple of music and beauty and decadence in (of all places) Dallas, Texas.
“I think this club can be a temple of future people,” Starck said at a press conference for the club’s opening, scarf tied around his neck, a scene captured in the 2024 documentary Pure Ecstasy: Inside the Infamous Starck Club by Dallas producer Michael Cain.
vimeo
The film premiered at the Texas Theatre last week, and Cain hopes to make it more widely available by the end of summer.
Mixing eye-popping footage and recent interviews with founders as well as clubgoers like Owen Wilson, Thomas Haden Church and J.R. Ewing himself, Larry Hagman, Pure Ecstasy is a 100-minute injection of music lore, lost history, and American innovation, tracking the rise and fall of the Studio 54 that thrived under the Woodall Rodgers overpass.
Blake Woodall (no relation to the street) was the man behind the idea, a rich kid from Preston Hollow eager to make his mark.
He’d witnessed the valhalla of Ibiza clubgoing.
“I saw an environment some would call debauchery,” he says in the documentary.
Others would call it escape.
The opening night in 1984 was legendary: The Dallas Symphony performed, but so did New York’s avant-garde icon Grace Jones.
The club raked in $125,000, a number that could probably still make Nick & Sam’s green with envy.
Over the next five years, Starck became a mecca for art weirdos and thrill-seekers and drag queens and people who wanted to be seen, but not in bright light.
Most famously, the Starck was the place where MDMA, then legal and known as ecstasy, entered the North American bloodstream.
It was a place of fashion and intrigue and flash and the casual gender-bending that accompanied gay culture’s mainstreaming.
Men in Flock of Seagulls hair and guyliner, women with Dorothy Hamill cuts and pill-box hats. Everyone wore broaches one season; I have no idea why.
I guess you had to be there.
And finally, I was.

I thought far too long about what to wear, because much of my wardrobe comes from SuperTarget, and no shade on Merona, but they could not match this moment.
I sprung for a slinky-shimmery gold gown in the Marilyn vein from U.K. retailer Wolf & Badger, and paired this with patent leather high-heel boots that really shouldn’t be worn at my age, but oh well.
I invited my older brother, an engineer and actor whose fashion radius extends from blue polo to red polo, but he accurately predicted and nailed the right look for straight men — black jacket, black shirt, black jeans.
Your basic “don’t mind me” outfit amid the sumptuous carnival.
My brother and I grew up in Dallas, but we were underage during the Starck Club’s reign.
We were too busy going to Spaghetti Warehouse and Six Flags to know that history was unfolding downtown.
I’d spent the past few days poring over archival footage, a parade of youthful folly and ‘80s excess, so maybe what struck me first about the crowded lobby of the Starck reunion was (and I feel bad saying this) how old everyone was.
Men had silver hair or no hair at all.
Women wore sensible heels and glasses. It was almost like the dewy-faced denizens on my laptop screen had entered a time machine and aged, well, 40 years.
My brother and I are no spring chickens.
I’m 49 and he’s 54, but as we made our way up to the stairs to the VIP room, he clapped his hands and exclaimed, “I feel so young!”

The VIP area was very chill, a version of the fabled Cold Bar at the Starck where folks went to cool off from a sweat-soaked dance floor.
Downstairs on-stage, the psychedelic art-rock band Lithium X-Mas was raging through a live set, but the VIP area was low-key, a service dog roaming the premises, and I took a seat on a couch and stared at video projected onto the ceiling: a woman lassoing a fire hydrant, a picture of men with floppy hair and sunglasses, parallelograms of magenta and yellow.
I recognized an old Apple commercial, rainbow colors across a piece of fruit. It struck me how many words that once captured the natural world — mouse, tweets, streams — had been co-opted by technology to describe the digital age rising up to swallow us whole.
“Do you wanna hear a real story?” asks Clyde Haygood, a celebrity hairstylist from LA who looked like a ‘90s-era Dave Navarro.
He was wearing the same snug black Gaultier jacket he’d rocked in 1984.
“We started a trend of pearls and gauzy fabrics,” he explained, sitting beside former doorman Dale Brasel, a tall professor-type in a sharp suit and white Doc Martens. “When we were done with it, we would come up to people inside the club with scissors and cut them off.”
By “we” he meant his friends, not Brasel, who was soberly guarding the door as his buddies wreaked playful havoc on strangers.
“I would tell him, just don’t hurt anybody,” Brasel said. He worked the door from 1984 to 1986, peak Starck, though the drugs and hedonism were somewhat lost on him. “I was always outside getting cussed out and spit on.”

Brasel cut our conversation short to greet an old friend, someone he hadn’t seen in decades.
As an interloper, the scene was a bit hard to penetrate, a return to a moment you missed the first time.
I headed downstairs to an outdoor area where I recognized the dapper man in a black jacket and black T-shirt: Russell Hobbs, a major force behind the emergence of Deep Ellum in the ‘80s.
“Are you on X?” he asked me, and I shook my head. “Everybody else is.”
I wasn’t even drinking, having given that up 14 years ago after my long tenure in the bosom of import lager and top-shelf tequila.
Hobbs wasn’t on ecstasy, either.
“I’m high on the Holy Ghost,” he told me, and he really did say that. Hobbs is famously born-again, a story for another time, but he sat beside me on a wooden bench to reminisce for a minute.
“The Starck Club was exquisite from Day One,” he said. “I was living in the eye of a hurricane over in Deep Ellum, so I didn’t go much, but Blake came over in his slippers to talk to me.”
Blake as in Woodall, still Hobbs’ best friend.
Woodall wasn’t able to attend the reunion because his daughter was graduating from Columbia University (a very different scene).
“Dallas in 1984 was a materialistic clone mall,” says Hobbs. “I didn’t fit in, so I created my own world.” Woodall did the same, part of what bonded the two. “Starck was much more than drugs. Music, art.” Hobbs was staring into the distance, almost as though he were watching the white curtains flutter above the red carpet. “Blake created a little taste of what heaven would feel like,” he said.

Heaven, or what it might feel like, turned out to be very loud.
Inside the performance area, the live band had been replaced by dance music blaring over the sound system.
White lights swept the floor like a UFO about to land.
I didn’t recognize the song — was it even a song?
It was more like a vibe, the throb of the bass rattling the wall I leaned against, too sober to join the fray.
The middle-aged clubgoers were doing the “nod and sway” as the white light turned red, then purple. From where I stood, it looked less like 150 people moving and more like one enormous body pulsing.
“Here’s something,” my brother said, yelling into my ear over the music. “The percussive beat feels like .50-caliber machine gun on your chest.”
My brother is in the Navy Reserve, and he served time in Iraq.
The machine gun was part of his training (he never used one), but the comparison clicked into place why my nervous system felt so rattled. “The sound literally compresses your heart,” he explained.
Would I feel differently on MDMA? Probably. I’d been a dive-bar lush, but I remained a drug prude who never tried X, or E, or molly (whatever you call it). I’ve never even seen cocaine in real life, a claim that made a male companion younger than me clutch his head as though it were about to explode. “Who are you?” he asked.
I’m a child of the War on Drugs, the Reagan-era push back to the decadence of places like the Starck Club. Less than 10 years separate me from most folks on the dance floor, but that decade brought so much change: HIV/AIDS, the drinking age hiked to 21 (and thus the ramp-up of underage binge culture), and a crackdown on pills and powders, including a major drug bust at Starck in 1986.
The club’s famous silver doors finally closed in 1989, the finish line of the decade it helped define.
The ‘90s brought grunge, guitars over synthesizers, long ratty hair instead of Aqua Net bangs.
A night club is a promise you will never grow old, that you’ll never die.
You’ll always be young and beautiful. Life outside a night club is a reminder that everything I just said is a delusion and a lie.
A late night getting later at the Starck Club 40th Anniversary Show. (Jason Janik/Special Contributor)(Jason Janik / Special Contributor)
I never did join the pulsing hive on the dance floor, but later on Instagram, I saw Gretchen Bell, founder of my favorite vintage store Dolly Python, posting about being inside it.
“I’ve never seen so many men in sheer multi-colored pantyhose tops in my life. Dillard’s must have had a sale.”
So much about the evening had the wink of an inside joke, but it never felt alienating; quite the opposite, even outsiders were welcomed into the fold.
Moms brought college-aged daughters, who giggled and took selfies in mini-skirts and platform wedges, looking relatively tame compared to an earlier generation of boundary-pushing rebels. Was this the first generation of American kids to dress more modestly than their parents?
A Grace Jones impersonator took the stage in a black catsuit and a flamboyant red robe.
I missed most of this, since I’d left to chat with George Baum and Cheryl Sharp, two former clubgoers I’d interviewed for the News last week (Baum was working the door back then as well as at the reunion show).
But when I returned to the VIP area, my brother was quick to fill in details.
“I’m 60, bitches!” he said, repeating the line performer UnShante DeFoxx had crowed a few times.
The actual Grace Jones is 75, so I suppose this was breaking character, but if I looked that good at 60, I’d do the same.

My feet were killing me.
Walking on 3 ½-inch spikes is for teenagers, I swear.
But as tired as I was by 10 p.m., it was hard to leave the circus.
Under the Edison bulbs right outside the entrance, I met Natalie Kates, a raven-haired stunner who’d flown in from New York for the event.
She was dressed in head-to-toe Comme des Garçons, including a pair of gobstopper pearl brass knuckles she tried to pack in her carry-on until security told her it was a weapon.
“It’s fashion!” she insisted.
No dice.
Kates grew up in Texas, though she grew cagey when I asked for more details, and I don’t blame her: She had the air of a woman without a past, who lived everywhere and nowhere at once.
She’d come to the reunion because former doorman Michael Dyess asked her; they’d been Starck companions back in the day.
She tried to summon him on her phone but grew impatient when he failed to answer.
“Where is Michael Dyess?” she yelled to people around here, managing to seem queenly and adorable at once.
When a text arrived on her phone, she tilted the screen to a man beside her.
“I don’t have my glasses. What does that say?”
Dyess arrived soon after, a sleek silver-haired gentleman in a black designer jacket over extravagant chain mail that dripped all the way down his hairy chest.
He’d worked the door from 1987 to 1989, and he flashed a picture on his phone from that time: Luscious dark hair, full makeup, as eye-catching as any woman in a rock video.
“Were you nice?” I asked him, and he smiled at me. Sweet girl, naive girl.
“Uh, no,” he said, and we both laughed. That was the point then — to feel inclusive but to be exclusive.
I had to leave them.
It was late, and my feet were screaming, but I blew kisses as I parted like we’d known each other far more than five minutes.
The side street seemed quiet and dark after we left the matrix. My brother was the one who put my thoughts into words. “I haven’t seen that many people happy in America in a really long time,” he said.
They say you can’t go back home again. They were wrong. We were there.
Dallas Artist David Hynds Unloads a Starck (Club) Raving Mad Collection of Nightlife Art
From T-shirts to tickets, memorabilia from the legendary club goes on sale at Ephemeral Space.

"No dance” buttons from the time the club was busted are on display alongside a vintage Dallas Observer.
Dallas’ most infamous night spot still has nightlife denizens eager to get past those velvet ropes.
We’re talking about the Starck Club, the Philippe Starck-designed icon of the 1980s, which is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its opening this month.
To mark the memory of those glory days of legal ecstasy use, big hair and 12-inch singles that never seemed to end, the Kessler Theater announced a reunion party to be held on Sunday, May 12.
It was so hotly anticipated that it sold out within hours.
(The Kessler has added a more chill pre-party set for the night before, with tickets still available, and the Texas Theatre will air the long-awaited documentary The Starck Club on Friday, May 10, and Sunday, May 12.)
But judging by the Facebook groups “Starck Club Survivors,” “Starck Club Friends,” “Starck Club Documentary" and “Starck Club Revisited,” there’s still not quite enough Starck to go around.
Since the reunion was announced, members have been peppering their feeds with images of their gloriously eye-lined youth and YouTube links to dancefloor classic spun by the club’s late DJs, Go-Go Mike DuPriest and Rick Squillante.
The East Dallas gallery Ephemeral Space is also leaning into nostalgia with its latest art show, Starck Art, which opens Saturday, May 4, and runs through May 18.
The show presents the collection of David Hynds, who was there for the entire lifespan of the club, including tickets, fliers, tees and invitations the artist has been hanging onto for decades.
According to Hynds, the art show was in the works before the reunion was booked.
We spy a flier for one of Drag Race superstar RuPaul’s early concerts.
Ephemeral Gallery
“When the club closed, [all the material] went into boxes, but by that time, I’d been so familiar with it, I wasn’t going to throw it out,” Hynds says. “I went to one of the openings of Ephemeral and thought, ‘I’ve got a lot of paper stuff, and that’s definitely ephemeral.’ So I talked to [co-founder] Jason Cohen about doing the show and mentioned it.”
Hynds’ friend and colleague Mark Ridlen (DJ Mr. Rid), who spearheaded the Kessler event, mentioned that it was coming up on the Starck’s anniversary.
So the duo got busy pulling everything together with perfect timing.
Looking back, Hynds couldn’t have predicted his unusual job would become a lifetime obsession.
He was delivering furniture and working as a part-time film editor when he had the opportunity to edit some footage for a new nightspot.
“The first day I worked was the opening night investor party where Grace Jones and Stevie Nicks played,” Hynds says. “I was watching Grace Jones perform and wanted to check the feed in my office. The bar had an exit right across from my door, and I almost got run over by Grace Jones dressed in a gorilla suit!”
Soon, he ran the “entertainment behind the music” during the club’s opening hours from Thursday through Sunday.
In the very beginning, Starck didn't show music videos as it did later; instead, it opted for unique visuals that weren’t intended to match the beat.
Hynds roped in another colleague with a film background, Suzie Riddle, to fill in when he was sick.
The video was so crucial to the club’s vibe that the owners sent the duo to the New Music Seminar in New York, where they discovered work from artists such as William Wegman to add to their roster of strange and unusual clips.
They also started producing their own pieces to add to the mix.
Soon, Hynds was creating fliers and tickets for the Starck’s many events and concerts, starting with 1984’s Republican National Convention in downtown Dallas.
“They had the slide projectors and asked me to a do a set of slides with the [Republican] elephant, and I think it's the first art piece I did,” he says. “The next one was for a New Year’s event invitation. I did a line drawing with a spilled glass of Champagne and the [Starck logo] dancing man, and after that, they started using me all the time.”
From rodeo and psychedelic parties to concerts by Jones and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Hynds created everything the club needed.
He even crafted three-dimensional props, such as a mechanical skeleton band made out of foam core for a Dia de los Muertos event.
Raiders of the Lost Starck
As he often had leftover fliers from the print runs, Hynds began stashing away tickets and artwork.
That way, when he was sourcing video artists, he would have something to send along to let people know what the Starck was all about.
When the club closed in 1990, it was all packed in boxes until it was time to pull it all together for Ephemeral.
Hynds has curated framed pieces dedicated to theme parties and musical events, which take over three walls of the gallery.
Featuring a mix of fliers, artwork and tickets, these will retail for from $30 to $650.
The promotional videos he made will be on view at the back of Ephemeral’s space.
Sixty limited-edition VHS tapes containing a Starck promo clip along with surprise footage from everyone from Lene Lovich to house band Happy TVs will be on sale for $87.50.
Hynds also printed a series of new T-shirts ($36.50) with vintage designs and new graphics marking the 40th anniversary.
A few of Phillipe Starcks’ original furniture pieces will also be on view, although he says he’s not quite ready to let those go.
With collectors and fans worldwide reaching out for a little piece of the club, Hynds is confident the show will sell well.
But for him, it just feels good to spread the love for a moment of freedom and creativity to the people who experienced it firsthand.
“I was thinking that after I’m gone, my kids are going through my stuff, and they won’t know what to do with all of this,” he says. “It’s better to put it in the hands of people now. My motivation is just to move it onward and get it out in the world for the people who still remember this to enjoy.”
The opening of Starck Art will be 5–8 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at Ephemeral Space, 203 S. Haskell Ave. The show is open Saturdays, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m., through May 18 and by appointment during the week. click to enlarge

Chapter 5
Riley arrives at the palace in the car that Liam sent just before 8pm. The sun is just setting behind the imposing building, casting it in a warm orange light, its stark white walls and turrets appearing to glow like a beacon in the dusk. Bastien opens the car door for her and leads her up to the Kings quarters. The heels of her patent leather pumps click on the marble floor of the opulent palace hallways as they turn right at the top of the grand staircase, instead of the usual left turn she would have taken towards her room during the Social Season.
Bastien stops at the kings quarters and knocks on the door. Riley smooths out her black cotton button down shirt dress as she waits for a response. Liam calls for her to enter and Bastien holds the door open, closing it behind her. She steps confidently into his quarters looking around at the luxurious sitting room with wide eyes. It’s decorated in a different style to the rest of the palace, which is stately and antique with gold scroll work cornices, imposing portraits of age old Cordonian royalty above grand marble fire places and uncomfortably hard ornate couches. In here it’s modern and sumptuous, with large plush grey velvet sofas and faux fur throws, beautiful white marble floors covered with thick pile white rugs, a modern glass and chrome coffee table sits in the centre of the room with a gorgeous huge vase of white roses on it. A crystal chandelier hangs above it bathing the whole room in a soft yellow light. The room smells like him and Riley feel a sense of home just stepping into it.
“Wow, Liam, this is amazing!” She exclaims in awe.
Liam walks over from the open plan kitchen area holding two large glasses of red wine, he’s looking casual and handsome in blue jeans and a pale blue cashmere sweater.
“Oh thanks, I had it redone shortly after I was crowned by some French designer Philippe something or another, I couldn’t bear to live in the floral frilly hell that Regina had it decorated in.”
Riley’s mouth drops open “Philippe Starck?”
“Hmm yeah, could be.” He shrugs.
“Oh my god Liam, he’s one of the top interior designers.”
“Well I guess that explains the price tag then.” He laughs.
He walks over kisses her on the temple and hands her one of the glasses.
“I hope you like it, it’s Lindaflor La Violeta a 2010 Argentinian Malbec from the Uco Valley. I chose it to complement the beef we have for dinner.”
Riley takes a sip quirking her eyebrows at him.
“Hmm it’s nice thanks... Um Liam are you nervous? You seem nervous, you’re being all pretentious and uptight.”
He lets out a long sigh. “I wouldn’t say nervous, no. I’d say apprehensive maybe. I guess I’m not used to this whole dating thing.”
“Is that why you’ve been avoiding me for the last few days?” She asks in a small quite voice.
“I’ve not been avoiding you I’ve been working, I’m just busy right now. And I needed a few days to wallow.”
Riley’s brow creases “Wallow? Liam since when do you ever wallow?”
He smiles sadly at her. “Since the love of my life turned down my marriage proposal. I just needed some time for me. To drink whiskey with Drake and sound off about how unfair life is. To move on from it so I could be myself again with you. Which I hope now I will be.”
Her heart skips a beat at Liam’s admission of confiding in Drake. She’s not forgotten the way Drake looked at her when he told her his feelings were more than just friendship, and his ridiculous but incredibly sweet reasons for calling her by her surname. Yet more guilt churns in her stomach, this time at being entangled between the two best friends.
“Liam...I’m sorry. I hope you will be too, I liked the old Liam.” She looks at the floor.
“Just not enough to marry him right?” Riley’s mouth drops open. “Sorry, sorry, that was low.” He cringes at his own words and smiles sheepishly at her while taking her wine glass off of her and placing them both on the coffee table. He puts a finger under her chin and lifts her head up so their eyes meet and places a soft kiss on her mouth. Riley responds back with a kiss of her own and he pulls her into him, his hand moving to the back of her head, his fingers tangling in her hair. He runs his tongue along her bottom lip and she opens her mouth letting him in, their tongues entwine as he presses her firmly against his hard torso. A knock at the door startles Riley making her jump and pull away from him. He pulls her back into him and kisses her one more time, she can feel him smiling against her lips.
“Dinners here.” He reluctantly lets her go and moves to open the door, allowing the staff in to set the dining table up.
Conversation flows as they eat and it’s just like old times again.
“So I’ve got some news.” Riley says cautiously
“Oh?” Liam asks, intrigued by her sudden change in demeanour
“Yeah, so um, Maxwell and I met with some agents a couple of days ago and...um... I’ve signed with CTA.” She avoids his eyes by staring down at her plate, stabbing an asparagus spear with her fork.
“What? Why the hell do you need an agent? And why did you listen to Beaumont of all people?” She raises her eyes to meet his angry gaze.
“Because Liam, people apparently love me and want more of me.” She sticks her tongue out at him playfully.
“Of course they do, how could anyone not love you. But I still don’t understand why you need an agent.” His brown is furrowed and Riley kings to reach a hand out to smooth it away. Instead she looks down at her plate and mumbles her reply.
“Ana de Luca called me and wants to set up an interview about the Tariq thing, I want to tell my side of the story Liam, I don’t want them making assumptions and writing lies about me, and Maxwell thought that having an agent to handle all the fees and negotiating would be the best idea.”
“No.” Liam looks down at his own plate, and continues cutting his fillet steak forcefully. Riley looks up in shock.
“What do you mean No? Liam just hear me out ok?”
“No. I forbid it.” He states matter of factly glancing up at her. His jaw set firmly.
Riley snorts “Forbid it? Did we suddenly enter a time warp and land in the 1950’s? You can’t forbid it Liam. I’m doing it. Jacob is going to set it up.”
Liam’s eyes shoot up to her face.
“Who the fuck is Jacob?”
“He’s my agent durr, have you even been listening to me? Liam I’m doing this and I would rather do it with your blessing. But either way it’s happening.”
He sighs a long drawn out sigh and leans across the table grabbing her hand, pulling her around it. He moves his chair back and pulls her onto his lap.
“You really want to do this? You really want to step into that world, because once you do there’s no going back, you know that right. Being in the spotlight is hard Riley.”
She puts her arm around his neck and snuggles into the warm soft cashmere that’s covering his chest.
“I know that Liam, I’m not as naive as you seem to think I am. And I’ve been in the spotlight since I came here.”
He places a gentle kiss on the top of her head.
“I just worry about you love. You know I want to protect you. I don’t want you to get hurt. The press can be like vultures, they’re never satisfied with just a bit of you. They twist your words and can make or break you in an instant. We have staff here who deal with the press and public relations, I can have someone assigned just to you. There’s protocol to follow Riley, does this Jacob even know anything about the Crown and how it works?”
She shakes her head smiling at his protectiveness.
“I’m not going to get hurt Liam. And yes I really want to do this, I want to do it on my own terms, I don’t want your people dealing with me as if I’m your property. Please Liam, I’ve thought about this long and hard. I want my voice heard, I want to make something of my time here, I want to be a voice for women in this country so the likes of Tariq won’t get the better of us.”
He looks into her earnest eyes and despite his misgivings his heart melts at her passion.
“Fine.” He puts a hand on her cheek, his fingers brushing into her hair. “But I want a contract drawn up with Ana bloody de Luca. I don’t want you mentioning my fathers part in any of this. There are topics and questions that I don’t want discussed. And I want to see the article before it’s released. And I want to meet this damn Jacob guy.” He looks at her with serious eyes.
“Ok. Deal. Thank you Liam. Err and well...”
“Go on, what else is there?” He chuckles.
“Well Jacob called me on the way here and apparently a Parisian fashion house is interested in me walking for them at an upcoming fashion show during Paris Fashion Week. It would be great publicity for the Beaumont House. And for Cordonia. And they want me to become a brand ambassador. It's a really big deal.”
He shakes his head at her in wonderment of where this new fame hungry Riley has come from.
“Aren’t you too short to be a model?”
She punches him playfully on the shoulder.
“Hey! It’s just a bit of fun.” She looks at him with her big blue pleading eyes.
“Ok, if that’s what you want to do, who am I to stop you. I suppose it could be fun having a supermodel girlfriend.”
“Oh I’m your girlfriend am I?” She teases him.
He stills and looks into her eyes seriously.
“Is that not what this is?” He gestures back and forth with his hand between their chests.
She smiles back at him, loving seeing his rare vulnerable side.
“Yes. Yes of course that is what this is. I love being your girlfriend Liam, nothing has changed between us, we’re still us.”
She leans up and captures his mouth in a passionate kiss, her hands gripping the back of his neck, his hands wander up and down her back. Riley let’s put a small squeal as he lifts her effortlessly from his lap and carries her into his bedroom, never breaking their kiss.
“I guess if you’re going to be a model.” he says in between kisses. “We should probably skip dessert.”
She giggles in his arms as he throws her onto his bed. “You’re all the dessert I need.”
He looks at her lying on his bed with hungry eyes. He’s waited so long to have her here with him.
“Undress for me.” He commands. “Slowly.”
She complies willingly, and without speaking. Looking up at him seductively through her thick lashes she starts to undo the buttons down the front of on her dress. He watches her as she makes her way downward. A smile playing at the corners of his mouth. She smiles softly at him when she finally finishes, tossing her dress at his feet onto the bedroom floor.
“Take all of it off.”
He orders again. And again she complies without protest, unclasping her bra from behind her back and slipping the straps slowly down her arms, before releasing her breasts from their lacy confines, tossing it down to join her dress at his feet. She smiles up at him again teasingly.
“I said all of it.”
His gaze on her nearly naked body is steely, his words are firm and commanding. He issues his instruction abruptly, softly yet firmly and authoritatively. Even though he said it softly, it was a command, and obeying him never failed to arouse Riley. She can feel a pulse throbbing between her legs as she hooks her fingers into each side of her lace panties and pulls them slowly and teasingly down her thighs, keeping her legs together whilst doing so, knowing it’s fuelling his desire. She flings them from her finger to join the rest of her clothes at his feet and leans back against his pillows completely naked and vulnerable under his merciless gaze.
“Do you have any idea what you do to me?” He growls, his voice deep and warm like honey. He’s staring at her intently. She merely smiles in response.
He leans over her gently placing his lips on hers, his tongue filling her mouth. He softly grips the back of her neck pulling her up onto his lap straddling him as he sits on his bed. She kisses him frantically and passionately, their tongues dancing in and out of each others mouths. She grinds her pelvis into him hard so that her sensitive parts rasp across the stiff fabric of his jeans. Her breasts squeeze up against his body like she can’t get close enough to him. His hands torment her, caressing and squeezing her ass, but making no move to address the need burning hot and wet at her centre.
”Please.” She moans breathless from his kisses.
“Please what?”
“Touch me.”
“Where? Let me hear you say it.”
She feels him smile against her lips.
“You know where.”
“Say it.” He whispers into her ear.
“My pussy, touch my pussy Liam.” She moans, moving herself back and forth against his lap.
He’s teasing her and she knows it. He runs one fingertip lightly down the crease of her bottom, making her shiver involuntarily. He reaches under her until he finds the source of her torment, brushing his finger lightly against her wet entrance. His other hand wanders up to her breast squeezing it firmly.
She wraps her arms tight around his neck and moans loudly as two of his fingertips trail through her wetness. He leaves them nestled there teasingly until she wiggles and pushes herself down against him.
“Ohhh, Liam.” She gasps slowly, prolonging each letter as if to savour them. She rocks her hips gently against his hand, bringing her head forward again to kiss him, struggling to open herself wider to his invasion of both her mouth and her body. He thrusts his tongue between her lips in the same rhythm as his fingers. He can feel her tensing against his hand, he’s enjoying teasing her too much to give her the release she craves just yet. He pulls his hand away from her and she groans in protest. He pushes her back down onto his bed, removing his sweater as he does so. She runs her hands up and down his taut muscular chest as he places kisses up her neck, dragging his tongue along her jawline. His teeth rake her throat and an involuntary “Oh” slips out of her. His hands gently caress her breasts as he circles the tight bud of her nipple with his thumb, forcing it to pull even tauter. He pinches it firmly and she moans into his mouth.
His kisses move from her mouth down her neck and across her collarbone until he replaces his fingers on her nipples with his lips, his teeth graze and nip at her, lightly pulling at her tender flesh, letting his tongue swirl and dance across the sensitive bud. The little jolts of pleasure and pain send lightning zipping all through her body. He slowly moves down her writhing body kissing his way over her stomach and down the soft skin of her inner thighs. His hands gently but insistently urge her legs farther apart. He suddenly and urgently drives his tongue inside her, setting off another moan from her that sounds like music to his ears. He loves hearing the noises she makes only for him – raw, intense and absolutely delicious noises of pleasure. His tongue finds her clit, sucking and swirling against it. He thrusts one finger inside her, crooking it and hitting her in the spot that turns her gasps and moans into one long cry of pleasure.
She grabs his hair, yanking and pulling him closer into her, raising her hips so he can take her further into his mouth. She shudders against him, her legs quaking, and when he finally slows to look up at her, he sees her hair is a wild tumble, and her face is glowing.
He rises from her, unbuckling his belt and removing his jeans and boxers as he does so. He hovers over her, crashing his mouth onto hers. The taste of herself on his tongue makes her twinge with longing.
“Fuck me Liam.” She growls at him.
He doesn’t need any further invitation than that and lines himself up with her, thrusting deeply, gripping her hips firmly in his strong hands, his fingers sinking into the soft skin of her pelvis. She’s so tight he barely has to move to get the friction he needs. Pushing in further, she lets out a whimper.
“You feel incredible.” He groans. “I want to fuck you until you’re calling out my name.”
Hearing the normally proper and graceful king speak to her in that way makes her heart race even faster.
He tucks a hand under her knee, raising it as he thrust into her hard. Every time he pulls almost all of the way out before he slams back into her. He can feel the blood racing to his groin. The familiar tingle at his back. Riley writhes under him spewing cuss words and calling out his name.
“Fuck Liam. Oh God. Oh fuck. Liam.”
Another thrust and her orgasm pours over him, she shakes and shivers beneath him as her eyes began to close.
“Open them.” He commands. “I want you to look at me when you come.”
She forces them open looking into his serious eyes that shine iridescent, flecked with every shade of blue, as sparkling as the Mediterranean sea glittering in the light of the moon. She swears she could just dive right into them. His jaw clenches and he releases into her with a low growl.
Hours later Riley stretches her tired body back against Liam’s and moves to rise from his bed. He pulls her back down flush against his chest, his arms tightening around her waist.
“Where do you think you’re going?” He murmurs softly into her hair.
“I’ve got go Li. What would Regina say if she knew that I had stayed here all night. And I’ve got an early meeting with Jacob in the morning.” She sighs.
“Stay.”
“Liam I can’t, I have to go.” She protests without putting up any resistance.
“That wasn’t a question Riley, you’re staying with me tonight.”
She smiles at his order and sinks back into his hard warm chest. He places kisses along the curve of her shoulder up to the base of her neck.
“Riley.” He whispers into her ear. “You know you’re mine right? Whatever this thing we have is, it’s just us. You belong to me and no one else.”
She smiles, his possessiveness and jealousy at her mention of Jacobs name, making her skin rise in goose bumps.
“Hmmm sure.” She murmurs sleepily back to him.
His hand trails up from her waist brushing the sensitive skin at her side before he reaches her breast taking it in his large hand, softly kneading it. He kisses up her neck and along her jawline finding that sweet spot below her ear that makes her hum. He rolls a nipple between his fingers.
“Say it. Tell me who you belong to Riley.” He quietly whispers into her ear, his teeth nipping at the lobe.
“I’m yours Liam.” She whispers back in a low moan. She feels him hardening once again behind her, his solid length pressing into her back.
“Good girl.” He breathes into her ear.
He continues his assault of kisses on her neck, nipping her with his teeth, briefly but firmly biting down, marking her as his, making her gasp, before soothing her soft skin with his tongue.
She’s tired and sore from what feels like hours of lovemaking but she doesn’t care. She doesn’t want to waste the time they have together sleeping. She relishes the ache between her legs that reminds her who she belongs to. She wants him in her once again. She wants to feel his weight on top of her, wants to pull him into her further and further. She wants to watch his face as it contorts in passion and ecstasy. He lifts her leg bringing it back over his thigh and runs his hand over her exposed entrance, slipping a finger inside. She lets out a soft moan at the welcome intrusion and he takes that as his cue to press himself into her from behind, one hand still caressing her soft full breast, the fingers of his other hand tracing circles on her clit, his lips leaving a wet trail up her neck.
“You’re mine.” He groans into her ear thrusting into her forcefully, filling her with all of him. “Always mine.”

Where we’re going we won’t need Eyes to see - a teen wolf meta
With Teen Wolf meta we have this tendency to name check Event Horizon (1997) and run off without explaining it - especially in regards to the episode “Ghosted” where they were in Canaan which uses a lot of the same techniques and tropes. But before I explain how Teen Wolf got there we have to explain Event Horizon.
A friend of mine once called Event Horizon the greatest horror movie almost made, and that sums it up nicely.
Following the success of Mortal Kombat [1995 starring Linden Ashby] the studio gave give the director Paul WS Anderson [the Resident Evil guy] a budget of 60 million dollars, the large soundstage at Pinewood and Carte Blanche to deliver an R rated horror. The film he delivered was 121 minutes long and X-rated. It was externally editted down to 91 minutes or 96 minutes depending on region and legend has it that most of the narrative exposition went out of the airlock. As gory as it is - and it IS - it was much much worse and it’s entirely possible that this studio inflicted hatchet job is the reason Event Horizon has the cult following that it does.
Anderson did not waste a dollar of the money he was given, everyone in the film is a noted character actor and most of the dialogue makes them feel real [with the exception of one distinct line which is just hilariously bad]. The ship was a set [there is minimal cg and it’s bad as you’d expect for 1997 but it’s things like a floating water bottle] based on actual gothic architecture specifically notre dame. The crew of the Lewis and Clark [the rescue ship] is seven people because they were meant to represent the seven sins - maybe in the longer version they did. The “stranger” in their midst is Doctor Weir, who following the suicide of his wife whilst he built the Event Horizon, became obsessed with the ship is the one who wants to bring it “home”. The shot of the rotating space station where Weir is based was a miniature. As most of the effects were practical, as opposed to CG, they stand up to modern scrutiny.
The film was a critical and commercial bust, but over the years since it’s release it’s been insanely influential on the field of Sci Fi being responsible for IPs such as Warhammer 40k, Deadspace and even the Alien franchise [which Anderson dipped his toe in with Alien vs Predator] and is considered one of the greatest Lovecraftian horrors ever made.
Event Horizon is not a great movie, it’s…. I’m one of the people who adore it, as scary movies go it never fails to make my skin crawl but let’s get into the plot.
The Event Horizon was an attempt at FTL travel, instead of going really fast it punched a hole through the universe creating a worm hole that would allow the ship to exit somewhere else with a device called “the gravity drive”. On its test flight it vanished. Seven years later it reappears where it should have with no crew and only a mild distress signal. Weir (Sam Neill), the original creator takes the crew of the Lewis and Clark, a rescue ship captained by Miller (Lawrence Fishburne), to bring it back.
On finding the ship the youngest member of the crew, Mr Justin (Jack Noseworthy), goes into the drive room in full EVA and is dragged into the black liquid at its heart. He is rescued by Cooper (Richard Jones), but when they confront Weir he denies it’s possible despite that they could not have known what to describe. Justin is comatose. They find a recording of screams which has a latin phrase which DJ (Jason Isaacs) translates as save me. The med tech Peters (Kathleen Quinlan) starts to see visions of her son covered in sores. Weir starts to see his dead wife as she was when he found her but with empty eye sockets. The ship starts to pull at their sanity damaging the Lewis and Clark, Smith (Sean Pertwee) refuses to leave the Lewis and Clark and in the middle of that Justin gets up and puts himself in the airlock, setting it to open.
All of the characters are shown to have a dark history but because of the editting we often don’t know what that is. We know Peters has left her terminally ill son because of her visions. Miller tells us about a crew member he had to leave to die in a burning ship. Weir has his guilt over his wife, but the rest was cut.
They find the ruins of the old crew with a tape showing them dismembering themselves and each other and it turns out the translation wasn’t save me but save yourself from hell. Fans have actually translated it more accurately as save yourself from the fire.
Miller comes to the conclusion the best thing to do is go home and blow the ship from orbit but Weir refuses to go. He takes one of the explosives from the nave hallway and blows up the Lewis and Clark and Smith, this sends Cooper into space [where he has the worst line in cinema, seriously https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aUozFOlxVnM] and Miller and Starck [Joely Richardson] confront Weir on the bridge where he has ripped out his own eyes. DJ is found disembowelled over the medicine table. Distracted by Cooper’s return Weir fires a rivet gun at the ship’s window causing the decompression to suck him into space. Miller tries to use the explosives along the nave corridor to separate the ship from the gravity drive which he considers the source of his evil but he is separated from his crew by a burning man who turns into Weir. They fight, the corridor explodes and Miller is sucked into the black hole.
There is a gotcha ending where Starck sees one of their rescuers as Weir but wakes up screaming before the very ominous door closing.
So what happens? what is the one sentence synopsis?
See that’s where Event Horizon sort of wins. On its surface the ship went to hell and became alive and is now luring people in and trying to drag them into Hell. Except even within the movie that explanation doesn’t make sense. The characters talk about the lack of good air, that they are running out of air and it turns them on each other to an extent so did anoxia cause the hallucinations combined with the very gothic imagery to create a mass hysteria? Is it a pseudo Catholic vision of Hell where the characters unable to deal with their own guilt at ultimately tortured? Maybe? Was it all of the above? I don’t know. Other people have amazing explanations of what happened and here’s the reason why Event Horizon freaks some people out and others are meh, it’s not that easy.
It has holes and contradictions and huge chunks obviously missing. It has a narrow focus and it never lies to the audience, it misleads them by assumption but it’s consistent. Weir is the hook character we expect to be the hero, he is the outsider amidst the crew of the Lewis and Clark, he is the one with the answers and the refusal to see alternative answers. He has the most fleshed out back story but he turns into the human manifestation of whatever is going on with the ship yet he is the one who becomes the face of the villain. The ghost apparitions are genuinely disturbing. The quality of the acting could carry a much weaker script. The effects are excellent and the gore is astounding, and best shown briefly [although production stills are available if it was too quick for you]. The Lovecraftian questions are presented and NOT answered. They are isolated in a place where they are in constant danger and the hallucinations mean even their thoughts are unsafe.
Did the ship go to hell? Or was it an explanation Weir made up when he broke? Or is this a purgatorial nightmare where Weir is sent out to fetch more victims for the ship? Is he repeating this ad infinitum with this crew or is it a new crew every time? Is the she Weir speaks of the ship or the manifestation of his wife, Clare?
The film doesn’t answer any of these questions. They are all valid ways to see the movie. And based on Anderson’s filmography the reason that these all DO work is because the film was butchered like one of the ship’s crew.
Recently they found a copy of the uncut film in a salt mine in Transylvania so maybe we’ll see it.
But people who take it on surface value that the ship went to hell and is now evil wooo, generally just dismiss it as poor. It is clearly a mishmash of things Anderson thought was cool instead of deep, sets are so Alien inspired that the xenomorph could pop out of any of the lockers and no one would be surprised. The ship’s set is so gothic Dracula could be drinking tea in the med bay and it would make perfect sense. Yet it somehow, probably despite itself, works.
So back to Teen Wolf.
Event Horizon clearly had its shadows over the production and it’s in the ambiguity more than the cinematography [which owes its debts to Silent Hill]. What Event Horizon managed by accident [Anderson couldn’t have pulled it off deliberately] Teen Wolf tries.
Every character in Teen Wolf, no matter how minor, has a backstory but it is not one we are necessarily given. They have their own stories which intersect with the story we are being told. If we look at the chimera, for example, we saw Tracy’s complicated relationship with her father, we saw Lucas and his boyfriend, Corey, and Corey before we knew he was a chimera told us about Lucas. Caitlyn’s girlfriend Emily was taken by the Darach but she was nervous about her first time having sex so Caitlyn tried to make it special for her. This makes the characterisation rich and this one of the complaints about the show. We learn as much about someone who gets murdered five minutes later as we do about the show’s mains. Beacon Hills feels real because the people in it feel real.
Teen Wolf offers a surface answer which does not hold up to scrutiny - at all -ever and which is often ridiculous. @Sublimeglass refers to this as the show vs tell, Teen Wolf tells us one story and shows us quite another. Solutions to problems are often best guesses with the information that they have and are often contradicted seasons later as characters learn more.
The main character is presumed to be the hero but by the end is very clearly the agent of whatever it is that is going on that wants conflict - however defining that very clear presence in Teen Wolf is like getting rid of glitter, you know it’s there but you’re never going to get it out of the carpet. There is clearly an evil presence, and it is clearly in the water, specifically the lake beside Lydia’s lake house [which Lorraine set up a mountain ash barrier to protect her from] but the character’s don’t know it’s there. I am not saying that Scott is evil or villainous in this - that’s a very different meta - but instead that he is continuing the war that existed before him. He is recruiting a character like him to carry on the story. He is repeating the cycle like Weir sacrificing another crew to the ship.
One of the arguments with EH is that the ship is freeing them from “the fire” which is light and energy, which is complicated, basically that our universe with its physical reactions is Hell, and that by removing the flesh [I did mention Hellraiser was a huge influence, right, and the video game Doom 3] you could be “free”, and there is a similar idea in Teen Wolf where characters try to escape the detriments of flesh - Gerard looking for a cure for his cancer, the dread doctors extending their life, the attempts to build a better beast for their own immortality, the leonmensch trying to capture the Wild Hunt.
Yet if you reduce Event Horizon to “the ship went to hell and is now evil” the two do not match but both are phantasmagorical.
Phantasmagoria is where one or more reality might not be real but is instead a dream/hallucination that is indistinguishable from reality, and thus brings the “reality” in question.
In Event Horizon this is several dream sequences, Weir and Starck both have nightmares whilst in stasis. This means when Clare starts appearing to Weir and the child appears to Peters we are primed to know they are not real and this knowledge means we’re primed for a scare even when the subject is not scary, such as Peter’s visions of her sick son.
In Teen Wolf we have several sequences that are not “real”: Scott’s visions of the school bus attack; Stiles’ visions of the bandaged figure; Scott’s dreams of killing Liam with the mute. Then we have sequences where reality is much more loosely defined in Motel California - where the characters hallucinate - and Ghosted which is the most obvious point for the Event Horizon characters.
We also have flashbacks which are subject to the “Rashomon effect” where several variations of the same narrative are shown and the whole is unreliable [the Fox and the Wolf, Blitzkreig and Visionary] What we are shown in Teen Wolf is only slightly more reliable than what we are told, and the telling is from Scott’s point of view - although it is unclear if it is only the last episode, the last season half or the whole show which is narrated. Personally I think it’s the whole. Either way Scott is an unreliable narrator. We cannot trust the narrative as it is presented even if it didn’t openly contradict itself.
The Lovecraftian parallels have to be mentioned even if when it comes to writing Teen Wolf meta I find him popping up like a particularly obnoxious infestation. Combined with that is the heavy influence of Hellraiser [3 metas later I am quite confident that Hellraiser was involved] and the whole is unsettling if not disturbing or scary.
The visual language of Event Horizon is medieval gothic, with columns, long empty corridors, flourishes and twists and the ship itself is a cross based on Notre Dame. In Teen Wolf colours have meaning, characters have symbolic associations [although unlike the intent for Event Horizon they do not represent anything as overt as the seven sins. They reveal the characters but not general themes.] Each of the first five seasons has a symbol which is represented by Godai, Fire, Water, Earth, Air, Void [if six has one I haven’t cracked it yet but it is probably the ethereal or the other] and the cinematography is certainly as deliberate.
I can’t just end this meta because it’s one of those as soon as you see the movie you can see the parallels because they’re pretty much laid out on a plate but the two are so different that unless you sit down and think about it you’d never consider it.
I can’t say that Beacon Hills is a phantasmagorical town that exists outside space and is poisoned by its proximity to Hell - but I can’t say it’s not either because of the ambiguity and contradiction. I can’t say Weir is a victim driven mad by his own guilt or the ship possessed him because of the same contradictions.
Event Horizon managed what it did despite itself. Teen Wolf might have done the same.

Daddy Issues: Christmas Special Edition Part two…
Warnings: Smut, curse words, angst
----------------
"Do you want to go to the park? Or we could do some Christmas shopping?” you ask Naomi, trying to be helpful once you’re out of the house.
“Actually I had a destination in mind.” She grabs your wrist and pulls you along.
Connor’s small legs can barely keep pace as all three of you dash through the streets. He looks up at you with wide eyes as if to ask why you are moving him so quickly so you wrench your hand from Naomi’s grasp, feeling her nails slide on your skin harshly.
“Can we slow down a bit?”
She scoffs, catches sight of Connor’s face and rolls her eyes. “He’s just like his father, always so serious about everything.”
Connor sniffs, looking worried he’s done something wrong and you hurl curses under your breath aimed at the back of Naomi’s head. You’re so busy trying to cheer up the little boy you don’t realise the destination Naomi has chosen until you’re already standing in the foyer.
“Naomi wait...this is…”
She holds up a hand. “I took the chance to let an old friend know I was in town. Ciao ‘tino…”
Santino approaches, striding through his gallery and you pick up Connor, backing away a bit as he greets Naomi.
“Bella….you look as good as ever…”
Naomi simpers in return and you give Connor a sceptical look. Santino catches sight of you and suddenly he is beside you, waving to Connor but leaning around the child to kiss your cheek, landing the second kiss right on your jaw bone. You blush but give him a friendly look. Since your birthday you and John have been starting a tentative friendship with the man, and you don’t want to jeopardise it.
“Princepessa…” he murmurs, using your old nickname and you have to hide a smirk at the look of outrage on Naomi’s face.
“I didn’t know we were coming here Santino...I’m...sorry.”
He shakes his head, speaking to you gently and calmly. “She gave me warning, do not distress yourself.”
When he turns back to Naomi his voice changes into something more theatrical, and you wince at the thought of any pain he may be hiding.
“So...let me give you a tour of the place…”
Santino shows off the most expensive piece in his gallery, not one of your favourites, but Naomi raves about it. You leave them to it, wandering back to your favourite spot, the Drip paintings. You managed to persuade John to let you keep Santino’s present so it hangs the wall of his office at home. Connor still doesn’t really to have an appreciation for art, so you find an apple in your bag and give it to him to munch on, thinking how proud John would be of you for having kicked your ice cream habit.
When you look up Naomi is standing in front of you looking sour. “You act like you’re his mother.”
“No I….” you stutter, feeling hurt and confused all at once.
She leans in close, and you can see the illusion of beauty she maintains crumbles a little on closer inspection. Her eyes are small and only made bright by heavy makeup, her mouth is twisted with rage.
“You’re not his fucking mother and you never will be.”
Santino appears right behind her, hearing every word. “That’s not polite Naomi. The child is here…”
She glances between him and you in outrage. “Are you fucking kidding me? Is everyone in love with the nanny? But then again, triangles were always your favourite shape ‘tino…”
Santino gives her a pained look. “This is not the place to discuss it.”
“I’m happy to take Connor home…” you offer in a small voice, seeing the tension between them.
“No. I made lunch reservations.” she seems to snap out of her bad mood, smiling at you and you blink at the sudden change.
Santino watches you all go, but as you pass he leans in with a quiet warning “Be careful principessa…that woman is never happier than when she’s causing someone pain.”
Naomi has surpassed herself, choosing a place that has Philippe Starck chairs but no allowance for children. The waiter looks down his nose at you when you ask for a menu for Connor. You dig around in your bag and find a juice box and some raisins, handing them to him with an apologetic look. Connor accepts them gratefully and your heart aches with fondness for him, hoping Naomi won’t hold it against you, you pet his curls and praise him, making him smile.
Naomi doesn’t seem to notice, she’s too busy ordering and not for the first time you begin to wonder what the hell John ever saw in her. If he’s telling you the truth, he never loved her, it was a drunken mistake. You know Santino did though, and you’re curious.
“Do you still keep in touch with Santino?”
Naomi orders wine before you can decline and finally turns her attention on you. “Hmm? Oh not really...I send him postcards occasionally.”
You flush, remembering, like the ones she sends to John for Connor. “You travel a lot.”
“Of course. Life is not living staying in one place.” she tilts her head, looking you up and down again and you shift in your seat as she leans over the table, pushing your hair back off your face.
“You should wear it like this...it makes you look older, you can see more of your bone structure.”
You self-consciously touch your hair, your skin burning where her fingers touched you. “Oh...I’m not sure…”
“Trust me. Just a few tweaks and I could have you looking so sophisticated Jonathan would die. Actually, let’s go shopping after lunch.”
She fills your wine glass and you sip nervously. “I need to take Connor home for his nap…”
“It’s fine, we’ll call Iosef to pick him up.” she picks at her salad, still staring at you. “Santino likes you too, huh?”
You shake your head. “No….he used to flirt with me to agitate John, but now we’ve all moved on.”
“So I see...you’ve moved on without me.”
She looks sad for the first time and you feel a tiny pang of sympathy. “It’s not like that. Connor misses you I’m sure, and as for me and John...it wasn’t planned, it just happened.”
You fix her with a gentle, earnest look “I’m not trying to be Connor’s mother Naomi, no one can ever take that away from you…”
She sniffs “Don’t be sweet to me, I don’t deserve it.”
Your throat is dry with nerves so you take another gulp of your wine. She refills your glass instantly and you have a strange impression she’s deliberately trying to make you drink more.
“I just need to ask...have you come to try and get John back?”
“You silly girl, no. I have Iosef”
“Oh, you love him?” you lean forward eagerly.
She gives a raucous laugh. “His father is a Russian oligarch, you know those people..have money we can’t even dream of…”
“Money is important to you?”
“Don’t be naive. Money is important to everyone. John has plenty though so you don’t need to worry. Why he still lives in that tiny house I have no idea.”
You bristle at her talking shit about a place that has such happy memories for you. “I don’t care if he has money or not.”
“Don’t you? He’s your sugar daddy is he not?”
You choke on your drink but she persists. “He bought you a car.”
“That was a birthday present” you gasp out.
“Sorry if I offended you, but you should be frank about it. We are all with people for different reasons. I’m sure Iosef is with me for sex.”
You’ve had enough wine to be curious, seeing Connor is distracted you dare to pursue the conversation. “So what is your theory on the reason John is with me?”
“Sweetie. You’re like a baby animal. Cute, full of life, and you evidently worship the ground he walks on. I bet you suck his cock whenever he wants, what more could a man wish for?”
You resist the urge to put your hands over Connor’s ears at her explicit words. “It’s not just about sex...we love each other.”
“I’m sure you do, but what do you have in common? The age-gap between you means you can’t possibly want the same things. I’m sorry to be cruel but there it is.”
You feel like she’s kicked you in the gut, suddenly feeling sick. “I’m taking Connor home...I think I drank too much…”
“Jesus I forgot you were a child.” Naomi complains, but relents and calls a cab for you all. Only when you see the sky is dark outside do you realise how late it is.
John is waiting at the door looking concerned. “Where were you?” You stumble inside and he smells your breath. “Have you been drinking?”
Naomi follows on your heels, ushering Connor inside. “Relax Jonathan, leave her alone…”
John gives her a murderous look. “I’m putting my son to bed. Get her a glass of water.”
Surprisingly she does so. “Thank you…” you say in a small voice “I think I’m about to get told off.”
She laughs, but not vindictively “I think you’re right. I better go.” she leaves in a cloud of sweet smelling luxury and you let your head drop back against the couch. The room spins around you. John appears beside you, he looks stern.
“You’re drunk.”
You wave a dismissive hand. “No! Tipsy maybe…” you reach to caress his cheek but he moves away and you feel hurt.
“You were drinking while looking after my child.”
You frown, raising yourself up on the couch to defend yourself. “I didn’t mean to drink so much...Naomi she...must have filled my glass…”
“You’re an adult. You should take responsibility for your own actions.” John admonishes and you pout, feeling anything but an adult in that moment.
“I’m sorry John...I’m so sorry. You know I’d never do anything to put Connor in danger…”
He looks torn between making his point and wanting to forgive you so you grab his hand and stroke the back of his thumb. “Don’t you know that?”
He lets out a deeply held breath. “Yes. I do. But still...you look a state…”
“Oh…?” you rub your face which feels too hot. “I’ll go take a shower…”
“No...I mean...you look...beautiful…” he cups your flushed cheeks and places a kiss on your mouth which is still glistening with wine. John gazes at you, you hair pushed off your face, your cheeks warm from drink, your eyes shining both alcohol and the fear you’ve upset him. He deepens the kiss as you simply respond, all your inhibitions destroyed by alcohol, you lift yourself up off the couch to press against him.
“John?” You say questioningly, as his actions and his words are not lining up.
“You have no idea do you?”
You hold him as he whimpers. “I’m here John...everything is okay…”
He gives a low grunt in his throat and lifts you off the couch. You grab your water and he carries you upstairs, placing you on the bed you now share. You’ve been living together for a while now but you still keep forgetting that John’s home is yours. He moves beside you and strokes your hair. You lay on your back and take deep cleansing breathes, waiting for the room to stop spinning.
“Feel better?” he asks, placing a warm large hand on your stomach soothingly.
“Yeah…”
You turn on your side to look at him and find him watching you with soft eyes. “Sorry I shouted at you (Y/N). I was just so worried...you’re precious…”
“I forgive you. If you forgive me?”
“Of course…” he kisses your forehead and you shift a bit so your head is on his chest. He runs his hand soothingly down your side and you feel yourself growing wet, all it takes is for him to touch you and your body readies itself for sex, it’s a problem.
John is staring at you, as if afraid you’ll disappear if he blinks. “I was going out of my mind...and it wasn’t just for Connor. God, it scares me how much I love you.”
He helps you undress and you lay back down on the bed. He’s wearing his old t-shirt with the hole in the collar and plaid pyjama pants. He looks tired, gorgeous, yours.
“Show me how much you love me John…” you plead and he moves over you without hesitation, moving his fingers inside your underwear. His eyes widen when he finds you soaking and if you hadn’t had so much wine you’d be embarrassed.
“You’re so wet for me…” he says in wonder and you arch your back like a cat, moving your arms above your head and moaning as his lovely fingers speed up. He bends down, sucking your nipples, making you give a needy whine. His licks his tongue over your navel, pulling down your panties and dipping his head to eagerly taste you.
You think he is going to stay there a while, so you give a cry of surprise as he flips you over on the bed. You look over your shoulder and see him staring at you again, and press yourself into the mattress feeling vulnerable. John grips your shoulders then scratches his nails lightly down your back, ending at your backside and pushing it down so you’re flat against the bed. His cock slaps against your ass and he trails it down over the cheeks to your entrance, leaving a damp trail in its wake.
“Going to teach you not to scare me like that…” he murmurs and you hear from his voice he is wrecked, pushing into you steadily. You fist your hands into the sheets as he moves roughly inside you, jolting you against the mattress but gripping your hips, not letting you move. You lay there and take it, choked sobs of pleasure falling from your lips, begging him to go faster and harder even as he fucks wild and unhinged like an animal.
His desperate passion makes you shiver and you flood around him as he bends to growl in your ear. “Come on little one...I want to feel you soak my cock baby...” You obey easily, you’ve never felt pleasure so intense. Your head is already so dizzy from the wine you almost black out from your climax.
When he comes with a roar John sinks his teeth into your neck hard enough to leave marks. He turns you over as you can barely move yourself and kisses you, open mouthed and possessive, before letting you fall back against the pillows.
“‘m sorry John…” you murmur again.
“You better not leave me...” he whispers, pressing a kiss to your forehead and it’s the last thing that echoes in your mind before you sleep.
