a tiny snippet of my canon-divergence morally grey regulus centric fic !!
part one, two, and three of chapter one have already been written heh heh
-
He hated living up to his purpose because it made him feel predictable. Regulus may have a higher sense of self-preservation than Sirius, and he may be less reckless and impulsive, but it was because when Regulus did something it was calculated. He weighed up his options and planned for success.
It was why, despite what everyone thought, Regulus was the Black brother to look out for. He was the chill in the air and the snap of a twig in a forest. He was the eerie, whistling tune winding itself around the tree branches and the flickering of the streetlight in the dead of night. He was the shiver caressing your spine and the dagger in your side, deadly; quiet; unseen.
He was the one to look out for and as he gazed up at the Dark Lord with tears lining his lower lashes, his face all sharp angles and high cheekbones, he knew it.
Tom Riddle on the other hand had absolutely no idea.

i enjoy writing this so much and i can't wait to publish it!!!! <3

may 9 | captivate | @jegulus-microfic | 671 words
Regulus enters the party with one goal: to captivate.
He struts through the painting, the Fat Lady complimenting him as he does so. “My, you look wonderful, dear. Trying to impress someone in particular?”
He hums, a smirk growing on his lips. “Maybe.”
The Fat Lady’s eyes twinkle at him. “Good luck to you, dear.”
Barty and Evan are on either side of him, towering over him like barking bodyguards ready to glare and bite anyone who dares to get too close. After all, Regulus isnt trying to gain everyone’s attention. He’s after one boy and one boy only. Barty and Evan, who have watched him fail time and time again to seduce the oblivious and stupidly loyal Gryffindor, were all for Regulus’ new plan.
“Ready for this, Reggie?” Barty croons, winding one of Regulus’ curls around his index finger.
“Honestly, if Potter doesn’t get the hint after this I’ll fuck you stupid instead,” Evan smirks, eyeing Regulus up and down appreciatively.
Barty glances over at him, smouldering eyes on fire as they dart between his boyfriend and his best friend. He can't say the idea hasn’t crossed his mind once or a thousand times. “Well, now I’m hoping he doesn’t get the hint.”
“Slut,” Evan purrs.
Regulus rolls his eyes at them, but a small grin does grace his lips. “I’m going to need you two to have more faith in this outfit.”
“More faith?” Barty exclaims. “I was the one who designed this little get up, thank you very much. It’ll work, trust me.”
Evan hums. “Maybe we can get Potter on board with the whole thing.”
They walk into the Gryffindor common room, the party in full swing with people already drunk and disorderly. Some are smoking by the tower windows, their eyes ringed red and their giggles floating around in the air with the smoke. Sirius, Remus and James are sitting with their usual gang of friends on the sofas by the lit fireplace.
It’s safe to say that everyone’s eyes turn Regulus’ way when he enters. Barty smirks triumphantly.
Regulus is wrapped in lace, his entire torso on display as it peeks through the leafy patterns on the lace top. His creamy skin causes quite the stir at the party, no one daring to dress as seductively as this. He has more skin on show than anyone has ever seen of him before, the long sleeves falling down and hooking over his middle fingers. His long, lean legs are enclosed in sheer trousers that shimmer whenever he walks, making him look like pure sex as he walks in and comes to a halt, eyes searching for the boy he came here for.
His eyes, thanks to Evan, are lined with a sharp wing of black kohl, bringing out the silver in his eyes and making them look pearlescent. His lips are rosy and shiny, giving the impression that he’s been biting them, or that someone else has been licking and biting them for him. He looks delectable.
Regulus meets the brown of James Potter’s eyes and lifts one corner of his lips up, eyes glittering like his namesake. James stares at him with a gaping mouth, his entire body frozen as if Regulus has stolen all the breath from his lungs. Sirius is adamantly trying to get his attention, his own grey eyes flickering between his brother and his best friend, trying desperately to understand what is going on. James ignores him, solely focused on Regulus.
So much so, that when Regulus raises a hand and beckons James over with a crook of his finger, James is stumbling upwards like a newborn deer and tripping over himself to get as close to Regulus as he can. He’s blushing as he walks over, hands fluttering at his sides giving away his nerves.
Regulus grins like a shark and leans into Barty, listening as his friend whispers, “Mission accomplished.”
“Well,” Regulus hums. “The night is young. Maybe Evan will get what he wants by the end of it.”

may 6 | strawberry | @jegulus-microfic | 1026 words | slightly nsfw
James is going mad. Truly, stark-raving mad.
He decided last week that he was going to be a good friend and take Regulus for a relaxing day out, because the boy had been cooped up within the library studying for his end of year exams. The dreaded week had finally come around and Regulus, eyes hard and decorated with dark smudges underneath, had flown through all of them. James already knew that his Potions work was going to be the best of the year because when he asked him how it went all of it flew over his head. And James, contrary to popular belief, is actually really fucking smart.
It takes skill to pull off so many pranks flawlessly, thank you very much.
But anyway, James wanted to treat Regulus to a nice picnic out by the edge of the Forbidden Forest where they wouldn’t be bothered by Sirius. As much as he loves his best friend, and he does tremendously, James got the feeling that Sirius was trying to block him from getting closer to his little brother. It seems mad to him because ever since Regulus ran away from home and moved in with the Potters, he and Sirius have rekindled their brotherly bond and James thought it only right if he bonds with Regulus, too.
When he told Sirius this, his friend had looked at him with eyes narrowed in suspicion. “Do not fall for him, Prongs. I mean it.”
James had spluttered, completely taken aback. “What?! Why on earth would I fall for him?”
Raising one eyebrow, Sirius sent him a deadpan look. “You know why, James.”
At the time James hadn’t known. Looking at Regulus now, he thinks he totally understands. He also thinks that being friends with Regulus is going to be the death of him.
Regulus is sitting opposite him on the blanket, raving about how stupid James is for setting up the picnic this close to the Forbidden Forest, and all James can concentrate on is the way he feels hot under the collar whenever Regulus insults him.
Oh Godric, he does have a type.
James also can’t tear his eyes away from Regulus’ mouth and the way it wraps sinfully around a chocolate covered strawberry, his plump lips stretched around the fruit as some of it dribbles obscenely out the corner of his mouth.
James thinks he might faint.
Regulus looks over at him then, looking at him with judgement. “Goodness, you really are mentally deficient aren’t you, Potter? Hello? Is anyone home or do I have to go back to Hogwarts and inform my brother that the best friend he’s ridiculously co-dependent on is braindead?”
James shivers at every biting word, loving the way they brand him as they fall from those sinful lips. There’s a good deal of strawberry juice lingering on his lower lip, some gathering in the corner just begging for James to take a swipe at it.
So he does.
Only, it doesn’t go down the way he was originally intending. He meant to swipe at the juice with his thumb, maybe bring it to his mouth afterwards to get rid of it. Only, his brain doesn’t seem to confer that to his limbs, and so James leans his entire body forward, brings his face so close to Regulus’ that the boy’s eyes widen comically, and swipes at the corner of his mouth with his tongue.
For a moment everything is still, even the sound of the forest hushing in anticipation for their next move, and then Regulus lets out a shaky exhale as his eyes flutter shut. James moves automatically, as if hearing that from Regulus sets him off and he’s determined to hear even more wicked noises from him.
James brings a hand up to Regulus’ jaw and manoeuvres him so that his neck is tilted backwards, giving James the perfect angle to swoop down and curl his tongue over the plump bottom lip. He brings it into his mouth and sucks, relishing in the high pitched moan Regulus makes.
He’s so perfect, James thinks as Regulus lies there and just lets him take it. Take whatever he wants.
When James thinks back to all his encounters with Regulus over the years, specifically those over the summer when Regulus moved in with them, he thinks he can see how gone he was for the boy. It was almost immediate, the way James just completely folded as soon as the snarky insults left his mouth.
A mouth that is parting so beautifully underneath his own. James can’t hold back the guttural groan as he dives back in for a proper kiss, taking everything Regulus has to offer and returning it tenfold. Regulus reaches up to scratch his nails across James’ scalp and James realiates by nipping his bottom lip before pushing Regulus onto his back, moving in between his thighs to hover over him.
Regulus opens his mouth, allowing James to lick into it and suck on his tongue. His other hand grabs tightly at James’ waist, his Gryffindor jumper clenched tightly between his fingers as he encourages James to press his crotch down into his own.
James pulls away on a broken moan and Regulus whines at the loss, blushing when he opens his eyes blearily, realising the sound he just made. James stares down at him as if he’s the most brilliant thing he’s ever seen.
“Please tell me you’ll let me do that again,” James almost begs, brushing his nose against Regulus’.
Regulus shoots him an unimpressed look. “Potter, if you don’t kiss me within the next five seconds I am going to tie you to that tree and leave you there for the foreseeable future.”
James hums. “If you wanted to tie me up, Reggie, you only had to ask.”
“Fuck off.”
Smirking, James brushes his lips against Regulus’ in a teasing manner. “A bit contradictory with your previous statement, love.”
A pretty blush dusts the high of Regulus’ cheekbones and James watches in adoring fascination as the younger boy groans and pulls him back down to his lips.
James can’t help but smile into it.

may 2 & 3 | delight & rush | @jegulus-microfic | 549 words | slightly nsfw
“Are you so utterly blind, Potter, that you aren’t aware I’m trying to get through? Move,” Regulus snarks, his eyes flashing dangerously as James blocks his path.
The corridor is bustling around them, students wandering to their lessons with varying degrees of determination between them. Barty is staring James down with a smirk from where he stands at the end of the corridor with Evan, Pandora and Dorcas, looking like a shiver of sharks prowling for smaller fish.
James feels like that smaller fish.
He returns his attention to Regulus, who looks just as put out with his lack of attention as he does when James is bothering him. James grins rakishly. “Why would I move out of your way when you shower me with such sweet words?”
Regulus’ grey eyes flash like lightning flickering across a body of water, sleek and magnificent. The breath leaves James’ lungs as he watches Regulus get all worked up.
Taking a step forward, Regulus brings his face into closer proximity to James’. He says quietly, calmly, “Potter, I will make you wish you’d never been born if you don’t get out of my way.”
“But if I’d never been born then I never would have met you, love.”
The delight that James feels as he watches Regulus’ cheeks flush prettily, the rouge trailing over the high of his cheekbones and to the tip of his nose, is indescribable. He looks as though he’s struggling to compute what James just said, the pet name having such a delicious effect on him. James’ grin turns decidedly more seductive as he moves closer to Regulus, backing him up against the corridor wall, feeling like the prey turned predator as he does so.
“Did you like that, love?” He asks, pressing his body to Regulus’ and delighting in the sharp intake of breath from the younger boy.
“Don’t be ridiculous, Potter,” Regulus breathes, sounding the most unmoored that James has ever heard him. “I know you’ve got the entire castle wrapped around your finger, but you have no effect on me.”
“Oh, really?” James asks, leaning down to press his face into Regulus’ neck. The corridor has gone silent around them and he’s grateful because it means he can press a kiss to Regulus’ neck without an audience.
Regulus gasps at the sensation and James smirks against his neck, pressing kisses all the way from the junction of his neck to the bolt of his jaw. Regulus squirms, his hands coming up to grab at James’ shoulder and bicep, fingernails digging in. The feel of it gives James a heady rush and he allows his last kiss to have more of a bite to it.
Against his jaw, James whispers, “No effect whatsoever, huh?”
Regulus stills suddenly, his body going completely frigid as though he’s been dunked into freezing cold water. James, confused at the sudden change in body language, pulls away and stares at him, only to find that Regulus is looking at something over his shoulder.
A shit-eating grin grows on Regulus’ face as he looks between the mysterious thing over James’ shoulder and to James. “Good luck, Potter.”
“What—”
“James Potter! What the ever-loving fuck do you think you’re doing?!”
James winces and turns around slowly, meeting Sirius’ incredibly unamused face. “Hi, Pads.”

may 4 | cease | @jegulus-microfic | 1057 words
“Stop,” Regulus begs, pushing James away. “Please just stop.”
James stares at him with heartbroken eyes, his face crumpled as he attempts to grab Regulus’ shaking hands. They’re in the Astronomy Tower, the night sky dark and thunderous, threatening a storm it’s waiting to unleash. The moon shines down on them and Regulus can’t help but realise the irony of losing James when the sun isn’t shining, but he doesn’t know when else he’s meant to do this.
They’ve been meeting in the tower for the past few months and at first it was fun, the two of them snarking and bickering with each other until slowly it became more physical, a push here and a jab there. Until one day James pulled. He pulled Regulus into him, his back against the bannister in the tower and pressed his lips to Regulus’ passionately. Regulus had just called him some ungodly name and James couldn’t take it anymore.
Soon the tower became a place where they not only argued but also just talked. About everything and everyone. Without realising it they had become each other’s safe space and the kisses soon turned tender and soft, and the fucking transitioned into something with a little more meaning. Regulus didn’t dive off straight away and actually allowed James to wrap his arms tightly around his middle, pulling him back into his embrace.
But that was then and this is now.
Now, Regulus is staring at James imploringly, eyes shining with tears not yet fallen and James wants to scoop him up and kiss his pain away, only Regulus won’t let him come near him. James doesn’t understand. “Regulus? What happened?”
Regulus lets out a bitter laugh, wet and humourless. “What happened? Did you get concussed whilst kissing that Prewett twin or are you just an imbecile?”
James feels as though he’s been slapped and staggers backwards, because he had kissed Gideon. Or rather, Gideon kissed him and James had spluttered and pulled away so quickly that he’d almost torn a muscle in his neck. It happened just now at the Gryffindor party, one that Regulus didn’t want to go to, preferring to be in the Astronomy Tower watching the stars. James, apologising to Gideon profusely about not being available, had rushed to get the map and find Regulus, opting to spend the rest of the night with him.
Which is where he finds himself now, staring down a furious Regulus, his eyes rimmed with red. He had obviously decided to come to the party last minute and walked right in on the worst scene imaginable.
“Regulus, it’s not what it seems at all. Please let me explain,” James begs, his heart pounding its way up his throat.
Scoffing, Regulus sniffs and wipes his cheeks harshly. The sight of his tears makes James ache something fierce. He wishes he could reach out and comfort him but he knows Regulus isn’t going to allow that. Has this horrible sinking feeling that Regulus might not let him ever again.
“What is there to explain? You kissed him, and I’m the idiot because I actually thought that this meant something to you,” Regulus’ shoulders droop suddenly and he stops wiping his cheeks, it’s all in vain anyway because the tears won’t stop. “Like it meant something to me.”
“Regulus,” James breathes, taken aback by this impromptu confession.
They never spoke about what they were to each other, just that they enjoyed finding release in each other’s bodies and didn’t want to stop. The sneaking about was fun, or at least James had thought so until his heart wrangled its way into the mix and then he sort of just wanted to snog Regulus whenever and wherever. But he refrained because he knew that Regulus was scared. Scared of what Sirius would think, scared of it getting back to his parents. They’d spoken about it, lying on blankets in the tower as the sweat cooled on their bodies, and James had sworn that he would protect Regulus from everyone that wished to harm him.
Looking at him now, James thinks that the only person harming Regulus is him.
“Just go, James.”
“No,” James declares, stepping forward with determination, because Regulus basically just confessed to him and there is no way in hell that he’s going to leave here without telling him how he feels. Even if Regulus doesn’t want anything to do with him now. He has to do this.
So he starts speaking whilst Regulus is quiet. “Gideon kissed me. We were dancing, surrounded by everyone else, it wasn't just us, and he sort of just attached himself to me. I pulled away instantly, hurt my neck a bit doing it so fast, and told him that I wasn’t available. Then I came here to find you, and well, you know the rest.”
By the end of the speech he’s shyly rubbing at the nape of his neck, eyes intently focused on Regulus. The younger boy is looking at James warily, but somewhere deep in his eyes James can see that he wants to believe what he’s saying.
“You’re not available?” Regulus asks, voice small and vulnerable. But his eyes. Merlin, his beautiful grey eyes are shining with something James thinks looks like hope, and it’s what spurs him forward.
Regulus allows him to take his hands as he approaches and soon they’re standing with their faces close. It’s intimate and it’s all James wants for the rest of his life. “I’m not. You see, there’s this really prickly Slytherin who I’m a little bit in love with. Even when he’s insulting me I can’t help but adore him.”
“He sounds like a right tosser,” Regulus says and James laughs, feeling brighter as Regulus smiles at him.
“Hey!” James scolds jokingly. “That’s my lover you’re talking about.”
Regulus rolls his eyes, cheeks staining a pretty red. The younger boy’s face turns grave once more, though. “You better not be messing with me, Potter.”
“Never,” James swears, leaning down so that his nose brushes Regulus’.
“Good,” Regulus breathes. “Because I’m in love with you, too.”
James surges to press his lips to Regulus’, heart pounding as he smiles into it. Nothing has ever felt sweeter than the press of Regulus’ lips to his, and he’s sure nothing will ever be as sweet as this moment.

may 10 & 11 | reform & gentle | @jegulus-microfic | 517 words
“No,” James shakes his head. It starts off as a small movement that gets progressively more urgent as Regulus stands there, silent and guilty. “No. You’re lying.”
Silence is all that greets him. There’s no hug, long gone are the passionate kisses that the two would share immediately upon seeing each other, secluded away in the Astronomy Tower with only the clouds as their witness. Regulus just stares directly into his eyes, his one grey ones murky and shaded.
He doesn’t answer James. He hasn’t spoken since the dreaded words came out of his mouth a minute ago, the ones that James thought he’d never hear.
James feels his patience slipping. “Tell me you’re lying,” he says firmer, his eyes beginning to sting as Regulus continues to stand there stoically. “Tell me you’re fucking lying!” The shout eventually makes its way out of James’ chest.
Regulus flinches ever so slightly, small enough that anyone else wouldn’t have noticed, but James knows this boy like the back of his hand. He thinks he could find his way to Regulus blindfolded in the dark.
Their souls are attached.
The tears are falling from his eyes now as Regulus continues not to say anything. James moves closer, spurred on when Regulus allows him to, and he places his palms on Regulus’ cheeks. “Love, tell me this is a mistake. Tell me how I can fix this.”
“You can’t,” Regulus croaks, his own tears falling silently into James’ palms.
James can’t stop shaking his head, can’t stop the tears that refuse to stop falling. Even when he’s confused out of his mind and shocked beyond belief he’s still so gentle with him, because Regulus deserves gentleness. He deserves someone to fight for him.
And that’s exactly what James plans to do.
“I will,” he wipes Regulus’ tears. “I will find a way to help you.”
The look Regulus gives him is devastating. “Why?”
James smiles sadly at him. “Because I love you.”
He hears the sharp intake of breath and feels the tears fall more rapidly into his palms. He sees Regulus’ right hand inch towards the underside of his left forearm and James grabs it before the boy can get there. He squeezes Regulus’ hand and ducks his head to place a sweet kiss onto his lips.
It’s chaste at first but then Regulus is throwing his arms around James’ neck and pulling him in closer, his mouth opening up to lick into James’ mouth and suddenly the exchange is hot and demanding. There are still tear tracks coasting down their cheeks but they throw their all into the kiss, biting and licking and sucking.
James wonders whether Regulus will be able to reform his opinions and deflect from the path he’s chosen, but then he realises that Regulus never wanted this. It is the life he’s been handed by his parents because he’s the spare. The boy always said to Jame how he never wanted to become his parent’s pawn, but he’s only sixteen.
Pulling away, Regulus breathes heavily and rests his forehead to James. “I love you, too.”

may 5 | surface | @jegulus-microfic | 2327 words (this is so not a microfic i do apologise lol)
Regulus is known to be icy cold, his temper like a storm rolling in over the ocean, like rain pelting the ground in frozen bullets. He’s calm and collected, never without a sarcastic remark or a scathing insult. He’s the top of his classes, always found to be studying within the library in a secluded corner surrounded by his snarky friends. Does he get annoyed that Barty messes around, flirting with Evan and asking them bizarre questions and still manages to score Outstandings on all his exams? Yes. Does he show it? No.
(Maybe in the privacy of their dorm he’ll bitch at Barty, who will pull him into his bed and cuddle him like an octopus, arms and legs wrapped possessively around him, until he calms down. Then Evan will join them, he and Regulus on either side of Barty, the latter’s arms around them both as Evan twists his leg to intertwine with Regulus’. Once they’re situated, curled up in the small single bed, Barty’s vowing that he’ll kill for them, defend them until his last breath, and Regulus will tease the shit out of him, whilst Evan smirks and trails his fingers teasingly up and down Barty’s stomach.)
Regulus eats in the Great Hall like everyone else, but his manners are impeccable. He eats all his meals with the correct cutlery, making sure not to take too much on his fork at any time as to appear greedy or slovenly. He chews his food an appropriate amount so that it will digest properly and he never speaks with his mouth full, no matter how much Evan ribs at him to make him break the habit.
He speaks politely to his professors and amicably to those he has to work with in lessons. He always completes his homework on time and sometimes he even asks for extra work, taking on advanced topics typically taught to those in the year above.
He’s the model student and the perfect heir to the Noble and Ancient House of Black, far better than Sirius would have ever been, or so Walburga spits at the dinner table, Regulus eating his food quietly like the dutiful son that he is.
He’s the perfect heir, indeed. Never going against the wishes of his parents and doing everything he possibly can to fit in with the image of pureblood heir.
Until he sees James Potter down by the lake, an arm thrown carelessly around some Gryffindor halfwit that Regulus recognises as one of the twins. He hates him. Potter hasn’t seen him. No, he’s too busy laughing and teasing the blushing boy sitting next to him, far too distracted to notice the way Regulus’ eyes burn into him.
Barty, Evan, Pandora and Dorcas are at his side, all watching him with varying levels of amusement on their faces.
“Why, that’s an angry face. Something the matter, Regulus?” Evan teases, following his eye line to where Potter has now placed a hand on the twin’s thigh.
“You know, I think it might have something to do with Potter over there. Just a guess though,” Dorcas snarks, a grin as sharp as a shark’s on her lips.
“I hate him,” Regulus swears, never taking his eyes from Potter and the bumbling twin.
“Of course you do,” Pandora says kindly, patting Regulus on the shoulder with eyes full of doubt.
Barty moves around so that he’s standing behind Regulus, bending down a little so that his mouth is by Regulus’ ear, one hand coming up to rest on the curve where his neck meets his shoulder. “Go do something about it, Reg.”
Regulus is silent for a beat before he quietly mumbles, “I can’t.”
“Why can’t you?” Barty asks, just as delicate.
“You of all people know why I can’t.”
He’s not wrong, of course, Regulus rarely ever is. Barty has the same expectations loaded onto his shoulders as Regulus does. Be the proper, respectable heir and marry some other proper, respectable heir and make proper, respectable heirs of their own. And do so all while maintaining their good name.
It’s bullshit, if you ask Barty. Regulus silently agrees with him.
“You want him?” Barty asks, turning Regulus to him.
Nodding subtly, Regulus whispers, “More than anything.”
Barty gestures to Potter with his head. “Then go get him.”
Regulus’ eyes turn pleading and desperate, a rare look for him who is always collected and firm. “I can’t. My family will never allow it. They’d sooner kill me than let me be with another man, you know this.”
“So would mine,” Barty confesses before looking at Evan and confessing some more. “But I’m starting to realise that what my parents want isn’t what I want, and that I deserve much more than that. And so do you.”
Regulus looks between Barty and Evan, the latter of which is grinning slyly at Barty with a pretty blush on his cheeks. Barty winks at him before returning his gaze to Regulus. Pandora is cooing, skipping over to Evan to wrap her arms around one of his, congratulating him. Dorcas rolls her eyes, muttering an about time before the pleased grin breaks out on her face.
“They’ll kill me.”
Thunder rolls over Barty’s face, a dark shadow casting over his expressive eyes. They promise pain unlike anything anyone’s ever known. “I won’t let them. I didn’t lie to you when I told you I’d kill for you. If you want Potter go and get him, but you better do it quickly because it’s getting a little too comfy over there.”
At that, Regulus snaps back round to face Potter and his irritatingly blushy companion. He’s removed his hand from the other boy’s thigh but they’re sitting a little closer together than they were previously and Regulus snaps.
You see, Regulus is a performer. Yes, to anyone else he’s the perfectly calm and dutiful heir and model student, but those who know him best know that it’s all a front to hide the beast that lurks beneath the surface.
Regulus Black is a powerful and forbiddable wizard, with a tongue as sharp as a razor blade and a mind that’s proficient as it is deadly. He has a fiery temper so hot that it burns bright blue and sears through everything he gets too close to. He’s a Reducto blasting through the walls of the castle, he’s the master of his sail, and at this moment he’s going to bring the tide up the beach to strange James Potter.
So he storms the distance between them, eyes solely focused on the boy with the messiest godsforsaken hair he’s ever had the displeasure of seeing, ignoring the stares and shocked chatter from those watching him. They’ve never seen Regulus Black look so out of sorts, so furious, and they’re about to see so much worse.
Sirius looks up from where he’s sat playing with Remus’ hair, conjuring daisies to put in his caramel brown tresses as his boyfriend reads a book Regulus presumes is Muggle from the way he doesn’t recognise it. Some lady called Jane Austen.
His brother’s eyes light up as he looks at him, waving a hand in greeting but Regulus ignores him. Sirius rolls his eyes and waves him off, but he glances wearily between his little brother and James, whom Regulus hasn’t stopped glaring at.
“Oh, boy,” Peter winces. “He doesn’t look happy. What the fuck have you done now, Pads?”
“I haven’t done anything!” Sirius protests, placing the last daisy in Remus’ hair and beginning to roll a cigarette.
Remus, intrigued by this, puts his book down with a smirk as he watches Regulus advance towards them like a storm, moving with care as to not jostle his boyfriend’s work with his hair. “Oh, this should be fun.”
Sirius turns an accusing look towards him as he licks the paper to form the roll up. Remus watches his tongue move skillfully, his eyes darkening and his mind wandering elsewhere. Sirius smirks. “What do you know that I don’t?”
Remus’ eyes flicker from his mouth to those grey-blue eyes and grins. “Oh, I know so many things, sweetheart. You will soon, just wait and watch.”
Regulus, unaware of their conversation and frankly not giving a fuck, storms past them and up to Potter and his companion. He coughs loudly and waits for him to turn around. When Potter does, his face lights up in a blinding smile. “Regulus! Hi.”
Regulus ignores him and casts a scathing look at the twin. “You’re done here.”
The boy flinches but doesn’t back down. “Excuse me?”
“Yes, you’re excused. Leave us.”
Potter looks between the two of them, eyebrows furrowing as he tries to decipher what the hell is going on. “Um, Reg? Is everything okay?”
Regulus turns the glare on him. “I don’t know, Potter. Why don’t you use those eyes of yours, as blind as they may be, and tell me if everything looks okay to you.”
Potter, clearly taken aback, rushes to stand and place both his hands on Regulus’ cheeks. The younger boy bats them away instantly and brings one of his own hands to clasp around Potter’s throat, the other one down by his side toying with his wand.
Potter lets out a strangled groan. “Regulus.”
The twin stands up and looks at the two of them with outrage all over his face, red splotches forming as he splutters. “Hey! Let go of him! We were in the middle of a conversation.”
“And now that conversation is over,” Regulus replies shortly without ever taking his eyes from Potter.
The twin, whose name Regulus will never bother to learn, clumsily reaches for his wand and Regulus is hitting him with a Everte Statum before the boy can blink. He’s thrown backwards with an alarming amount of force, crumpling in an undignified heap on the floor a good few feet away.
Regulus never takes his eyes away from Potter. The latter whines softly at the display of raw power. “Oh, fuck.”
He jerks Potter forward by his throat, relishing in the way the older boy’s eyes go hazy as he looks at him and no one else. He hasn’t even bothered to look to see whether the twin is okay and victory snakes itself around Regulus’ gut.
“You listen to me very carefully, Potter,” Regulus says the words softly yet firmly onto Potter’s lips. “You are mine. No one else’s and certainly not that sorry excuse of a wizard’s, got that?”
Potter is nodding before he can finish his sentence and it makes Regulus feel warm, the way the older boy just gives in so easily. “Yes, Merlin Regulus, yes.”
“Say it for me,” Regulus whispers, his lips caressing Potter’s as he squeezes his throat gently.
“Yours,” Potter whispers back.
Humming, Regulus brings his lips to Potter’s, biting at his bottom lip and curling his tongue into the other boy’s mouth when he dutifully opens it for him. Potter groans and grasps at Regulus’ hips, his grip bruising as he brings Regulus closer towards him so that their bodies are flushed together. Distantly, Regulus is aware that people are gasping and talking furiously to one another about what they’re witnessing. They’re no doubt wondering how the strict and uptight heir of the House of Black ever got involved with the school’s resident popular boy and general sunshine, and Regulus doesn’t care. He only slides his hand into Potter’s hair and brings the other one up to his jaw.
When they pull away Potter is looking at him with wonder. “Reggie? What about your parents?”
“An incredibly dull and mostly stupid person told me that I deserve better than them,” Regulus says, ignoring Barty’s protest in the background. “Better than what they’re trying to force me into and I agree. What I want is you, James.”
The smile that breaks out on James’ face is breathtaking and Regulus can’t help it when a matching one lights up his own face. James is pulling him into another passionate kiss before he knows it and he goes willingly.
“Godric, I think I’m going to throw up.”
“It’s not that bad, Sirius. You’ll get over it.”
“Moony, I love you but this is the worst thing ever. They’re going to be so gross now. I can’t believe you orchestrated this.”
Remus looks at him with wide eyes full of affection and disbelief. “You do realise you just told me you love me for the first time?”
Sirius, determined not to let the impromptu confession throw him off balance, huffs and says, “Yes. I love you, Moony, and I thought it’s about time I told you.”
Smiling coyly and feeling stupidly happy, Remus pulls Sirius closer to him on the blanket, the boy now leaning back on his elbows as Remus, situated on his side, leans over him. “And you thought this would be best said as we watch your brother snog our best friend?”
“Oh, I’m sorry, Remus. Would you rather I blast a spell at someone and then possessively declare that you’re mine?”
“Well,” Remus considers. “Maybe not—”
“Sorry, Pete,” is all Sirius says as he casts Everte Statum and Peter goes flying backwards towards the water.
Remus fails to smother his laughter as he brings a hand up to Sirius’ cheek and caresses it. Sirius is grinning as he leans into the scarred hand, eyes going soft as Remus whispers, “I love you.”
The two are kissing, Sirius pulling Remus into him as they lay on the blanket, wrapping one of his legs around Remus’ waist. He hums and bites possessively at Remus’ lip. “Mine.”
“Salazar, they’re actually disgusting,” Regulus wrinkles his nose, he and James sitting back down, Regulus in the spot the twin had so ungraciously vacated. James rolls his eyes at him and pulls him into his chest.
Leaning into Remus’ body as his boyfriend gropes his arse, Sirius mumbles to his brother, “You’ll get over it.”

may 1 | animagus | @jegulus-microfic | 1.1k words
Prongs roams the Forbidden Forest, his flank heaving from the long run he just completed. He’s walking slowly now, allowing the breeze of the night to waft around him and past his snout, all the different scents of the night intriguing the animal within him.
He’s alone tonight, the moon shining down upon him as a waning gibbous, and as he looks up at it he can’t help but think of Moony. Remus is resting tonight, he and Sirius curled up in the common room together sharing a smoke, and the thought causes his tail to wiggle. It’s much like Padfoot gets around them.
Remus and Sirius finally got their shit together a month ago and James couldn’t be happier, because it means that he doesn’t have to deal with their mutual pining. James being the kind of man desperate to help his friends with any inconvenience, ended up getting both ends of their quiet yearning.
Of course he was very happy to be a shoulder for the both of them, but he can’t say that he’s not relieved now that it’s over. A whining Sirius can be very hard to deal with, mainly because he clings to James and refuses to do anything else.
So James is out here alone because his best friends are happily lounging together on the sofa in the common room, sharing cigarettes and kisses as Remus no doubt reads Muggle literature to Sirius, who sits with his back to Remus’ chest. And he’s happy for him, of course he is, but there’s also a part of him that feels incredibly and indescribably lonely.
The sharp crack of a twig broken under someone’s foot is what snaps him back to Prongs and the current situation. He sniffs the air, trying to pick up a scent and is pleasantly surprised by what he finds. He slides into a trot, wandering through the trees and bushes until he gets closer to the edge of the forest perimeter. He’s coming up to the glen of pretty flowers that bloom no matter the season. When James is out here on a full moon his priority is making sure that Moony doesn’t get too close to the edge of the forest, knowing that Remus doesn’t like to chance anything. It means that he doesn’t get the time to appreciate the pretty places that the Forbidden Forest has to offer, which is totally okay because James knows that the main reason in his own little furry ability is to help Remus with his.
In the middle of the crop of flowers, surrounded by tall, imposing trees, is Regulus Black.
He’s standing in what appears to be silky pyjama bottoms with his Slytherin jumper thrown over the top. It’s a mild Spring evening, so James isn’t particularly worried about him being cold. Merlin knows that Regulus wouldn’t like it if James were to badger him about wearing a coat.
James is fairly content to stand at the edge of the trees and watch the pretty boy pluck the colourful flowers from the ground, collecting them in a bunch in his other hand. He watches the way his long fingers reach out, flexing as they decide which flower to pick, and then as they clasp the stem and pull. He watches the way his dark curls fall over his face and block the view of his steely eyes, the ones that flash at James whenever he dares to flirt with him. When he’s out of Sirius’ range, James gets rather shameless with his flirting and delights in the way that Regulus explodes like a bomb, firing insult after biting insult at him.
He stalks forward, trying to observe from a different angle and is stopped in his tracks by Regulus’ head snapping upwards. James is rewarded by the view of his grey eyes and lets out a puff of breath that he’s sure would be a fond, dreamy sigh if he wasn’t in his animagus form.
Regulus stares at him like he’s seeing one of the seven wonders of the world, eyes twinkling like the galaxy resides there, and it spurs Prongs forward. Regulus doesn’t move an inch as he stalks towards him until they’re metres apart, and Regulus takes a cautious step backwards. Prongs whistles in disapproval and Regulus freezes, his eyes never leaving the large stag in front of him.
“Good, uh, deer?” Regulus mumbles, looking embarrassed.
Prongs makes a noise closely resembling discontent. Regulus raises an eyebrow. “Not a deer?”
Waving his head back and forth, Prongs tries to show off his majestic antlers so that Regulus can identify him properly. He seems to understand, clever as he is. “Ah, not a deer, then. A stag, perhaps?”
Prongs hops around him, strutting as he does so and Regulus lets out a happy, quiet laugh, watching him all the while. James thinks it’s the best thing he’s ever heard. “Very impressive, indeed.”
Trotting back over to Regulus, Prongs stops much closer than before and brings his muzzle down to the top of Regulus’ head, burying it in his curls and huffing contentedly. Regulus stays very still as he does so but allows him to sniff and nuzzle him. Very carefully, he brings up a delicate hand and begins to stroke at his neck.
“Oh,” Regulus makes a surprised sound. “You’re softer than I thought you’d be.”
Prongs releases a pleased hum and steps closer to Regulus to encourage more petting. Regulus laughs that sweet, quiet laugh once more and continues to massage Prongs’ neck. “You know, you remind me of someone I know. He’s a bit needy like this, too. Always following me around and bothering me.”
Prongs makes a disgruntled noise. The thought of him actually bothering Regulus with his presence makes him feel worse than he did when he originally came out here to clear his head. Regulus seems to read into his sudden mood change and says, “Don’t worry, secretly I quite like it. But that’s our secret.”
He lets out a happy little bellow and hops a few times, careful not to tread on Regulus’ feet. The two of them continue to stand in the glen for a little while longer, Regulus talking to him in hushed tones as he explains why he’s picking flowers. Prongs makes affirming noises here and there, wanting to let Regulus know that he’s listening. Regulus stares at him when he does this, pausing in the middle of his speech to stare openly at him like he’s trying to read him.
James thinks he might be on to him, but then that’s ridiculous. Who in their right mind would think oh, that stag is paying undivided attention to me, must be James. No one, that’s who.
When the night starts to get a bit too cold, Prongs is nudging at Regulus’ side and the boy relents. “Okay, okay, I’m going. See you here tomorrow night?”
James wouldn’t miss it for the world.

may 7 & 8 | allure & silk | @jegulus-microfic | 1105 words
James Potter is magnetic.
It’s clear as day, as the sky is blue, that James Potter is truly like no other. The way he walks through the corridors of Hogwarts minding his own business, laughing with Remus and Peter, roughhousing with Sirius, one arm wrapped tightly around his shoulder. People come up to him with bright smiles and enthusiastic waves and James responds to them in kind, referring to them by name and asking how their family is. He knows little tidbits of information about their lives and he makes them feel good about themselves as he remembers it, making them feel like he cares.
The way he moves on a broom is stunning, the allure so strong that even those repelled by Quidditch come to watch all of Gryffindor’s games just to get a glimpse of the wind in his hair, his determined face as he scores yet another ten points, the flex of his thigh muscles as he clings to the wood.
He’s breathtaking, a sight to behold. The crowd chants his name like a long forgotten god, worshipping his every move as he waves to them. As if he’s the sun personified, lighting up their dark world with his effortless charm.
And yet, in the dark of his bed, curtains pulled tightly and spelled shut, he doesn’t feel bright like the sun, doesn’t feel important. Truly, he feels like he’s a ticking time bomb just waiting for the moment that people realise he isn’t good enough, that he doesn't shine quite as bright as they expect him to. He feels like an imposter.
The only person who makes him feel like he’s worthy of love and affection, of any sort of worship, is Regulus Black.
His best friend's brother.
It makes him feel endlessly guilty as he spends his nights wrapped up in the Astronomy Tower with Regulus, naked bodies curled around each other as Regulus kisses every inch of his golden, toned body. It’s an entirely new kind of worship, one that runs bone deep and lights his entire body on fire. Sirius is but a thought very far in the back of his mind until Regulus is casting cleaning charms, pressing delicate kisses onto his eyelids, his nose, and all over his face. He’ll end with one on his lips, deep and passionate and James thinks he might drown in the abundance of emotions Regulus makes him feel.
And fuck it. If Regulus makes James happy then who is he to deny himself a chance at happiness? Doesn’t he deserve it? He spends all his time catering to other people, trying his hardest to do what’s best for others and helping them that he barely ever thinks of himself.
Well, this time he’s going to do something for himself.
James leans in to press a tender kiss to the soft skin of Regulus’ neck where it meets his shoulder and breathes in deeply, bracing himself. Regulus, who is sitting in between James’ legs with his back to James’ chest, tenses as he senses the oncoming conversation. He keeps his head forward where they’re looking at the night sky, the view perfect from the Astronomy Tower.
“I want to tell him,” James announces quietly, pressing another kiss to his neck.
Regulus swivels around and looks at him with wide eyes, hope burning dangerously within. “You do?”
James nods, a smile growing on his face as one does on Regulus’, but because Regulus was taught to expect the worst growing up, his face turns sombre. “What changed your mind?”
It has been a problem between them for a while now, James wanting to wait before telling Sirius about them. He isn’t even sure what he’s waiting for, which bothered (read: infuriated) Regulus because he couldn’t fathom why James wouldn’t want to tell his best friend. He thought that James was insecure about their relationship, embarrassed about him. Needless to say it caused a few arguments, but James was adamant about telling Sirius at the right time.
James looks at Regulus now and thinks that he wants the entire castle to know that this boy is his. “I realised that you’re the only person that I feel like I can truly be myself around. I never have to pander to any expectation, never have to worry about whether I’m being too much or not enough. I can just be. And I’ve been observing the way I act with others, always trying to make sure they’re happy, and I just thought: why can’t I focus on making myself happy? And you? You make me happy, so why wouldn’t I want to tell everyone?”
He shrugs afterwards as if he hasn’t just said one of the most romantic things Regulus has ever heard, and the latter surges forward to press a heated kiss to his lips, twisting so that he’s sat in James’ lap facing him. James takes the change in position in his stride, pulling Regulus in by his hips and pressing their bodies tightly together. He accepts the tongue that swipes at his bottom lip and opens his mouth, groaning when Regulus expertly licks into his mouth.
James runs a hand down to Regulus’ arse, dipping his fingers into his trousers and moaning gutturally when he feels the hint of silk and lace underneath. Regulus smirks against his lips. “I thought you might like that.”
“You’re going to be the death of me.”
Regulus hums. “Nope, but Sirius might be.” He reconsiders his words after James pulls away and sends him a wounded look. “I’m joking, James. He’ll be fine.”
“But what if he isn't?” James whispers, pinching his eyebrows together. “What if he feels betrayed that we didn’t trust him enough to tell him straight away? He’s my best friend.”
“And he’s my brother. That’s way worse when you think about it, but I’m not worried. He’ll strop for maybe a day or two and then he’ll demand to be our flower girl. You know how he is,” Regulus soothes, uncharacteristically gentle with his words. James loves these soft moments almost as much as the biting ones.
James sends him a coy smile. “You thinking of marrying me, Black?”
Regulus rolls his eyes. “In your dreams, Potter.”
He doesn’t inform Regulus that he does in fact dream of marrying him. He thinks he’ll cross that bridge once they’ve told Sirius. For now he pulls a squirming Regulus back into his lap and kisses him silly, for if James is the sun then Regulus is the star of his universe, lighting up the sky when James doesn’t have the power to do so.

kiss me on the mouth
| wolfstar | 3.5k words | based on a tweet i saw | can be read on ao3 here |
Remus held back a groan for what felt like the millionth time this evening. The urge to roll his eyes whenever Sirius would interact with Marlene was beating down on him, which was insane because Marlene was Sirius’ girlfriend, so of course they were going to talk to one another.
Remus just didn’t think he could bear it having to watch them snog, their mouths moving together like they knew each other intimately, tongues peeking out every so often to lick up against one another.
The Gryffindor common room was decked out with Halloween decorations, orange bunting and floating lights hanging from corner to corner, the main lights having been turned off for mood lighting, as James put it. Remus wasn’t sure who James was trying to seduce with his mood lighting considering Lily was about two seconds from jumping Mary, but with the way his friend eyed the portrait he assumed there was someone else.
The eldest two years were all gathered in various spots in the room, some of them by the open window smoking something that Remus knew had been cooked up in the greenhouses weeks prior to the party. Most people were dancing in a makeshift area by the alcohol table, bodies dressed down in skimpy costumes moving against each other sensually, the bass of the music thrumming within their veins and pounding along with their hearts. Remus almost wished he was up there with a stranger, feeling their body entwine with his, because it would be a lot better than his current position, which was sat on the floor with his back against the sofa, James’ legs caging his body as he spoke to Peter.
Remus was fading in and out of their conversation, humming occasionally to give the impression that he was listening as he drank from his bottle and watched from lidded eyes as Sirius got the soul kissed out of him by Marlene.
Jealousy burned something wicked in his chest.
Lost within his haze of hatred, which he wasn’t entirely sure if it was aimed at them or himself, he didn’t notice Lily and Mary bounding over to their little group by the fireplace. Lily was dressed as a muggle comic book character called Poison Ivy and had somehow convinced Mary to go as Harley Quinn. Remus wasn’t sure whether Mary knew that the two characters were girlfriends and that Lily was seriously projecting, but it made him smirk as he watched the two of them sneak glances at each other.
“Guys! Come and dance with us!” Lily yelled, smiling wide and free due to the alcohol she’d consumed.
Mary was much the same, hanging off Lily as though she was her life support. “Oi! Black, stop swallowing our friend and come dance with us!”
Sirius, snapped out of his daze by a push from Marlene, jumped up and rushed to the dancefloor with the two girls, twirling them around with one hand each. Remus watched them and sighed. Sirius looked incredible tonight. He was dressed up like a pirate, with a white shirt he’d borrowed from Remus billowing around him, unbuttoned past his sternum. He wore loose brown trousers that were buckled with an oval shaped metal belt, engraved with jewels dangling from it. He also had a dainty waist chain tucked within the shirt that peaked out every time he moved his hips and the light shone from it.
It made Remus want to eat him.
A loud cough sounded from opposite him and he snapped his neck so fast it was a wonder he didn't get whiplash. Marlene was staring at him with a raised eyebrow, her mouth curved into a small smirk. “He looks good, doesn’t he?”
Marlene was dressed much like Sirius, her own white pirate shirt billowing around a corset that pushed her breasts upwards, making them appear as though they were spilling from it. Remus had just come out as gay to his friends but even he could admit that Marlene looked incredible tonight. Her trousers cut off at her calves, short enough to show her chunky black boots and the hint of the tattoo that curled around her ankle. A pirate hat sat atop her head and underneath it was a Gryffindor red bandana, her wild blonde hair backcombed to create an effortlessly messy look.
Remus felt quite inadequate with his bloody shirt and trousers both adorned with rips and gashes. He’d removed the glamour from his face and body to reveal the scars he bore every day, bedazzled with some fake blood. When people asked what Remus was he told them he was the victim of a werewolf. Everyone complimented him on how real it looked.
A soft, coy grin lifted the corner of his lips at the memory. Sirius had been horrified before he’d laughed his head off, joking that he should have gone as a dog. “He does. Your doing, I imagine?”
Marlene laughed, throwing her head back. “You’re joking, right? This was all his idea. Said he wouldn’t be able to outdo Moony but he could still look damn sexy.”
Remus rolled his eyes, a small blush coating his cheeks as he ducked his head and took another sip from his bottle to stall for time. He didn’t know why he was so surprised that Sirius spoke about him with his girlfriend, they were best friends after all and it’s not like it meant anything. “He’s such an idiot.”
Humming, Marlene took a sip from her own bottle, black fingernails wrapped around the neck. “A damn good kisser, though.”
Remus immediately felt queasy, but he brushed it off and shrugged in a way that he prayed was nonchalant and not stiff. “I wouldn’t know.”
Marlene eyed him suspiciously, a laugh threatening to break from her lips. “You’re lying.”
“Of course I’m not,” Remus ground out, becoming more agitated as the seconds ticked by because he wished he was lying. “Why would I lie about that?”
“Well, I don’t know. But he’s kissed James plenty of times and even Pete once as a dare, so I only assumed he’d kissed you as well.”
“That’s true, Sirius is very affectionate,” James’ voice drifted down from above him and Remus jumped in his spot, completely forgetting he was there.
“Jesus, James,” he swore, shuffling in his spot and placing a hand on James’ knee as if that would ground him.
“I’m pretty sure Padfoot has kissed you,” Peter mumbled from around the rim of his glass, amber firewhiskey sloshing dangerously.
“I’m pretty sure I’d know if he’d kissed me, Pete,” Remus snarked, unable to keep his irritation from bleeding into his words.
A quick glance at Marlene told him that she’d heard the bite in his tone and found it amusing, a full grin breaking out on her lips as she sat up and leaned closer to Remus, eyes sparkling conspiratorially. “Well, you’re missing out, dear Remus. That boy kisses like a whore, so desperate for it. He’ll sit there and fight with you, so demanding and hot. But oh, the minute you put your tongue in his mouth? He practically melts. Whines like a puppy and just takes it.”
Remus felt like he was going to implode. He felt hot all over like someone had doused him in oil and lit a match, his body prickling as his brain conjured images to match Marlene’s words. Throwing him into the fireplace or holding his head underwater in the Black Lake would be less painful than hearing this and not being able to experience it. Just once Remus wanted to know what it was like to kiss Sirius. He wanted the boy whining for him, because of what Remus was doing to him.
Marlene looked like she wanted the same thing.
Furrowing his eyebrows, Remus watched as Marlene called for Sirius, the boy’s head whipping around immediately, his hair swishing over his shoulder like some sort of muggle shampoo advert. Remus was transfixed.
Sirius made his way over and sat down next to Marlene obediently as she patted the spot next to her. She turned to her boyfriend with gleaming eyes. “It has come to my attention that you haven’t kissed Remus. Why?”
A blush burned prettily into the freckled skin of Sirius’ nose and the apples of his cheeks, eyes darting from Remus to Marlene, an edge in them as they reached the blonde girl. “Because we just haven’t, Marlene, why are you asking?”
The girl didn’t seem intimidated in the slightest, eyes sparkling with mischief. “I just find it rather odd that you’ve kissed both Pete and James, and James a fair few times might I add, and not dear Remus here. I think you should rectify that immediately.”
Spluttering, Sirius looked between Remus and Marlene rapidly, blushing further when he caught eye contact with Remus. “I— that’s ridiculous, Marls. Why would you want me to do that? We don’t need to do that, right Moons?”
Rolling his eyes, Remus ignored Sirius’ pleading stare and turned to Marlene. The open rejection from Sirius was enough to kill his mood for weeks and he was over Marlene getting her kicks from it. “Piss off, Marlene, and stop teasing him. He clearly doesn’t want to.”
He rose to his feet, swigging the last of his drink with the intention of getting another one straight away so that he could get away from the couple before him. He dropped the empty bottle to the nearby table. Maybe he would go to the dancefloor and find someone to lose himself in for the night. There was that Ravenclaw boy who had made very obvious hints that he found Remus attractive…
“Remus, wait—”
“That’s what you think,” Sirius’ plea was cut off by Marlene’s sly comment.
Remus turned to them, feeling slightly better now that he was looking down at them as opposed to them looking down at him on the floor. He could see clearly how panic flashed across Sirius’ face as he turned to Marlene. He hissed, “Marlene, shut the fuck up.”
Bored of their antics and feeling like the butt of the joke, Remus spoke softly and yet lethally. “When I came out to you I thought you’d be cool about it. I didn’t think you’d sit here and take the piss out of me for it.”
Sirius looked up at him like he’d just been slapped around the face, eyes widening dramatically. He stood up instantly, shooting from his spot on the edge of the sofa with desperate eyes and downturned lips. “Remus, what—”
Marlene’s heavy sigh and groan cut him off. “Godric, I am being cool about it. I’m trying to—” she cut herself off, took in a deep breath and turned to Sirius with a new determination in her eyes. “Y’know what? Kiss him.”
“Marlene,” Remus shook his head. What wasn’t she getting? Sirius didn’t want to kiss him, he’d made that perfectly clear. She was being cruel whether she knew it or not.
“No,” she held up her hand, eyes still pinned on Sirius. “Kiss him. For the love of fuck just kiss him.”
Something seemed to travel between them at that moment, a silent conversation happening between their eyes, and Remus watched as Sirius seemed to go through the motions. He had always been so expressive, every emotion written on his face clearly for anyone to read. He wasn’t shy and he rarely kept his mouth shut, so whether someone read it or not they’d probably hear about it sooner or later. It was something that Remus loved about him no matter how annoying it could be.
“Fine!” Sirius snapped, glaring at Marlene before turning to Remus and softening his stare immediately.
As Sirius walked closer to him the entire common room faded into nothingness, the music becoming white noise and the people vanishing completely. It was only Remus and Sirius in the room, the latter coming to a stop just before Remus, head tilted upwards so that he could look into Remus’ hazel eyes, his stare earnest and shiny.
“Sirius, stop. You don’t have to do this,” Remus mumbled, voice hushed as to not break whatever bubble they were in right now.
In a way, Remus sort of felt like he could cry as he watched the boy he loved force himself to kiss him just because his odd girlfriend demanded it. Was that all Remus was? An errand to tick off before he went back to the real thing?
Hands came up to the hem of his bloody shirt, gripping lightly. Those grey-blue eyes were round like a doe’s and oh-so tempting. Sirius’ lips were red and shiny, most likely from the alcohol and the way Sirius tended to bite them whilst he danced and it made something feral unfurl itself in Remus. He wanted to lick and bite every inch of him.
“I want to,” Sirius whispered, hands tugging lightly at his shirt, lips wet and eyes wide.
Remus couldn’t hold back.
He cupped Sirius’ cheeks in his hands, long fingers brushing through the wild waves that fell around his face, and captured his lips. He groaned at the feeling, finally knowing what it was like to kiss Sirius Black, the boy he’d been in love with for years.
Marlene wasn’t wrong about Sirius, but boy did she leave out a few details.
Sirius kissed like a starving man, like someone who had been caged for years only to feel the first rays of sunshine on his face and reach for them with everything he had. His lips moved with Remus’ immediately, his hands sliding up Remus’ torso and gripping the shirt with strength, the buttons popping and scattering to the floor. Remus tried to pull away, to see the commotion that Sirius just caused but he wasn’t able to. A soft groan of complaint was all he registered before Sirius’ mouth was back on his and his hands were wound in Remus’ hair, pulling roughly and causing his roots to tingle.
Remus couldn't keep the feral part of him locked up any longer. He pressed his hands bruisingly into Sirius’ hips, sneaking his hands under the white shirt and tangling them in the waist chain he knew was waiting there. His skin was so soft and Remus couldn’t help but moan into Sirius’ mouth, pressing his lips harder as Sirius pulled him closer. Their bodies were connected at every point, one of Remus’ legs automatically slotting between Sirius’, an eager noise ripping itself from the latter’s throat.
Their lips moved together insatiably, but it wasn’t a fight like Marlene had suggested, it was more like a dance without a leader. Sirius tried to get the upper hand, to retain control, but Remus knew that the boy was begging for someone to take the lead. So that’s exactly what he did.
Sneaking one hand further down, Remus grabbed a fistful of Sirius’ arse and felt the shift in the air as Sirius all but gave in to his touch, his back arching deliciously and his mouth opening in a silent gasp. Remus took the opportunity to lick into Sirius’ mouth and delighted in the eager, desperate whine that left Sirius’ lips, the boy releasing little huffs and moans as Remus continued to delve into his mouth.
Removing his mouth from Sirius, Remus ignored the whiny complaints and mouthed at his jawline, licking and biting his way to his earlobe and down his neck, listening for particular sounds that left Sirius’ mouth. He latched onto the patch of skin where his neck met his shoulder and sucked hard, feeling Sirius tremble in his grasp, legs squeezing Remus’ one trapped between them.
Remus licked over the area once, twice, before biting the skin, holding it captive between his teeth and sucking it into his mouth. Sirius moaned, breathy and high-pitched and like nothing Remus had ever heard before.
“Remus,” Sirius gasped, one hand gripping the hair at the nape of his neck with a vengeance and the other coming to rest on Remus’ shoulder as though he wasn’t sure whether he wanted to push him away or pull him in closer.
Chuckling low and throaty, Remus seductively licked a stripe up his neck, over the notch in his throat, and over both of his lips, tongue curling. Sirius shuddered. “That’s it, sweetheart. Tell me what you want, hm?”
“You,” Sirius whimpered, trying to pull Remus’ lips back to his, eyes blown wide and hazy. “I want you.”
The moment was cut short by a loud voice. “Fucking thank Godric! Can I please go back to my girlfriend now?”
Remus blinked and suddenly the entire common room swam back to him in pieces. James and Peter looking at them with wide eyes and even wider grins, Marlene rolling her eyes at them with an exasperated yet happy look on her face, Lily and Mary whooping from the dancefloor, their arms wrapped around each other and lipstick smudged.
“Wait, did you just say girlfriend?” Remus frowned, focusing on Marlene, which was a herculean effort considering Sirius was still hanging from him looking utterly submissive and edible.
Marlene rose from the sofa and picked an invisible piece of dirt from her shirt, mouth poised in a smirk once more. “That’s the last time I do you a favour, Black. I told you he wouldn’t try to steal you from me if he saw us kissing. Remus is way too gentlemanly for that.”
“That kiss says otherwise,” Pete mumbled, grinning wildly and wiggling his eyebrows when Remus shot him a look.
Marlene tapped Remus on the shoulder and walked off towards the portrait where Dorcas was standing, leaning against the wall with a satisfied smirk on her lips and her Slytherin friends around her. Remus could practically feel James perking up from his seat.
“Wait, is Dorcas here? Did she bring her friends?!” James was up and out of his seat immediately, eyes on the boy standing to Dorcas’s left who was accepting a drink from a Ravenclaw in Remus’ year.
Remus felt bad for the boy, knowing that he’d be competing against James Potter for the remainder of the evening, but he couldn’t find it in himself to focus on that right now.
He turned to Sirius, who was still pliant from their kiss, staring up at Remus with a small, guilty smile on his face. “So you and Marlene aren’t dating?”
“No. She may or may not have a girlfriend,” Sirius shrugged innocently.
Nodding, Remus slid both of his hands down to rest warningly on Sirius’ arse, enjoying the way Sirius’ eyes became half-lidded once more, his mouth open on a silent intake of breath. “And you thought you’d trick me by pretending to date her?”
In a rush of breath Sirius said, “I didn’t know how else to get your attention.”
Remus paused for a moment, looked at Sirius like he’d give him the time to rectify his statement, and then scoffed when it seemed that Sirius was, well, serious. He leaned down and licked over Sirius’ bottom lip and then the top one in one curl of his tongue, the fire inside of him roaring as Sirius tongue peeked out between his lips in the hope that it might catch Remus’.
“Sirius,” Remus waited for the other boy to focus on him. “You have had my attention since I met you.”
“Really?” The hope in Sirius’ eyes only further fueled the hope growing in Remus’ heart.
“Really. I have been in love with you for two years,” Remus murmured against his lips, pecking them softly once.
Sirius pressed his lips against Remus’ before he whispered, “I’m in love with you, too.”
Remus felt like he was on top of the world, happiness welling within him with a force he never knew capable. It was different to every other happy moment he had experienced. When his friends confessed that they had trained to become Animagi so that they could join him on the full moon, it was like a hit to the gut. Remus could only nod repeatedly and blink the tears from his eyes, a feeling of never ending gratitude surging within him for being so lucky with his best friends.
But this was different. What surged through him now was utter bliss. He didn’t feel the urge to cry, only the urge to never stop smiling again. He worried that he wouldn’t be able to kiss Sirius again because of his inability to wipe the permanent smile from his face, which would be a damn shame because Sirius did kiss like a whore, but Remus feared he was worse. Especially when it came to Sirius.
“Wait, if you two are going to start snogging like sluts again, I’m just gonna leave real quick,” Peter darted up from the sofa and over to the alcohol table where James was currently trying to get Regulus Black to take the drink he was offering and ditch the one the Ravenclaw had given him.
Remus and Sirius stared at each other for a moment before, “Dorm?”
“Dorm,” Remus nodded, taking Sirius by the hand and dragging him towards the stairs, a smile still etched onto his lips.

James laughs at his best friend Sirius, who is staring at his phone in horror, his eyes wide and unblinking as he looks at the text James just sent from his phone. His mouth is open and he looks ridiculous. He’s likely to catch flies at this rate and James can’t help but cackle at his shocked face.
It’s no secret that Sirius has been crushing on their friend Remus for the past year, following him around with puppy eyes and hanging off his every word. James has told him time and time again to make his move, that Remus won’t be horrible to him if he confesses because when has Remus ever been horrible to either of them? Never. So he wouldn’t so much as hurt a hair on Sirius’ head if the boy confessed.
James also has it on good authority that Remus has fancied Sirius for nearly two years now, so he isn’t setting Sirius up for failure by urging him to confess. Of course, he’s sworn to secrecy by both of them so it’s not like he can spill either of their secrets to the other, even if it would help things along immensely. But Sirius being Sirius wouldn’t stop whining about how he wishes he could just confess already.
James was only trying to make it easier for him.
So it has come to this. James grabbed Sirius’ phone before he could realise what he was doing, and sent Remus a text saying hey can we talk? I need to tell you something. It’s genius if you ask James because he’s done half the work for him. Making the initial move is always the most nerve wracking and James has gotten that out of Sirius’ way.
Honestly, James isn’t sure why Sirius isn’t on his knees thanking him. Where’s the excitement? Usually James would be engulfed in a hug by now.
“James, what the fuck?” Sirius whispers, eyes glued to his phone at the very unsendable text message.
“It’s a good thing, mate! Now you just have to confess and boom! Dating,” James grins, patting Sirius’ thigh and leaning back into the beanbag he’s currently sitting in with an air of victory to him.
Finally, Sirius lifts his eyes from the phone and tosses it across the room. He serves James a deadly stare. “James.”
Feeling apprehension dance along his spine, James sits up straighter. Sirius doesn’t say anything else, only stares at James with a look that gets more intense the longer it goes on. James fidgets uncomfortably. “Um, Sirius? You okay there, bud?”
“James,” Sirius repeats unblinkingly. “Because I love you, I am going to give you a ten second head start, but if you don’t run right now I am going to kill you.”
Alarmed, James jolts in the beanbag and tenses his legs as his flight mode activates. He wavers, mainly because he’s unsure as to whether Sirius is joking or not, but he gets ready just in case. “Really? I was only trying to help you out!”
“Really,” Sirius confirms gravely. “Ready? Countdown starts now.”
“Wait, Sirius—”
“Ten—”
“I really don’t think this is nece—”
“Nine—”
“I was only help—”
“Eight—”
“Fuck, okay,” James scrambles upwards and dashes out of Sirius’ bedroom.
The positive to this situation is that Sirius’ house is fucking enormous. He’s a little on the richer side, which isn’t a huge shock because James is fairly wealthy himself, but Sirius moved into this place with his younger brother and his eldest cousin because his parents were verbally and physically abusing them. His cousin took them in immediately and Sirius helped buy them this place with the money that was left to him by a relative.
The house, if one could call it that, is ornately decorated and very tasteful. It is more of a manor, James thinks as he rushes up a double staircase and onto the next floor’s landing. There are many paintings hung on the wall, some of them James knows were painted by Regulus, Sirius’ younger brother, and some are the works of Sirius’ niece, who also lives with them. Even the toddler’s paintings are encased in the same intricate, golden frames as some of the priceless antique ones and it makes James smile, even as he’s racing for his life.
He can’t hear Sirius counting anymore but he knows that the boy must have stopped by now and is on the hunt for him. Honestly, James thinks he’s being a little dramatic but that’s an average day for Sirius, and so James thanks his lucky stars that Sirius hasn’t decided to go truly overboard. This is actually quite mild for him.
A sudden bang from downstairs has James panicking and diving into the first door he comes across. It’s steamy when he first enters, a thick haze of heat hitting him in the face and James tries not to choke on the sudden onslaught. The smell is delicious, however, and James finds himself moving further into the room as his nose leads him to the pleasant scent. As he moves further into the ridiculously large room, James identifies that it smells of lavender, bergamot and pine.
He wishes he could bottle it and spray it on his pillow so that he could get a guaranteed night of good sleep, because holy fuck does he want to ingest this smell right now.
The sound of rushing water vaguely registers in his mind because suddenly it ceases, James now coming to the dawning realisation that the room he’s in is a bathroom and that there is definitely someone in here with him. Someone who was showering not seconds ago. Which means that whoever is in the shower-tub combo is probably about to step out of it. Naked. The person in the shower is going to step out of it dripping wet and completely naked.
It could be Andromeda, Sirius’ cousin, or her husband Ted, or Regulus, Sirius’ brother. James doesn’t know which option is worse, they’re all awful for different reasons. Ah yes, a dripping wet, naked Regulus, how awful indeed, his brain supplies and James feels his skin flush.
Listen, okay. James has known Sirius since they were eleven and met at some fancy, rich boarding school that all their ancestors had apparently gone to, which meant they had to as well. So he’s known him for quite a while, given that James is now twenty-one and at another prestigious university that their ancestors also went to. This means that he’s known Regulus for that time as a result of his unbreakably close friendship with Sirius.
At first, James had thought Regulus was adorable with his cherub cheeks and his little curls. He looked like a child that would be modelling for kids clothing brands, but when he opened his mouth? Goddamn, he was such a little shit. He’d taken one look at James and spat the most unhinged insults James had ever heard. At age ten, no less! It had knocked James down a peg initially, but truthfully? James had become a little enamoured with Sirius’ spiteful younger brother.
Sirius had apologised profusely to James, worrying that his little brother had put him off being best friends. He rushed to explain that it was a result of the way they’d been raised, which had then prompted the conversation about their parents which had James equally furious as he was heartbroken. James promised him that he had nothing to worry about, that he liked Regulus and his biting comments. You’re not getting rid of me that easily, James told him before crushing him in a tight hug.
So James had grown up with Sirius and therefore Regulus, and he’s watched the younger boy blossom in his own ways. He’d never hung out with them much at boarding school, having his own group of equally sarcastic and sharp-minded friends who looked at James like he was prey they could hunt and destroy. Despite their less than friendly demeanors, James always tried to talk to them when he could, wanting to get on with them because he cared for Regulus and they were his best friends. Openly, his favourite was Pandora, who was always the most receptive to him. Secretly, his second favourite was Barty because the boy had a wicked sense of humour when it wasn’t aimed at James with his incessant need to take the piss out of him.
Regulus and his friends had followed in their footsteps and gone to the same university, which James knows Sirius was secretly happy about because it meant that he could spend more time with him before they got jobs and lives of their own. A part of James was happy too but he hadn’t wanted to look into why exactly that was.
Of course, James knew deep down why exactly it was.
Watching Regulus grow up from someone he classified as ‘Sirius’ little brother’ to Regulus, a young man who had his own name, his own personality, dreams and desires. A young man whom James could no longer deny to himself that he found effortlessly attractive.
Which left James with the problem he has now: fancying Regulus. James is well aware that Regulus is his own person, but it doesn’t change the fact that he’s still Sirius’ brother, and James knows that Sirius would throw the hissy fit to end all hissy fits if James reveals that he fancies him. So James pines silently for the boy who throws insults at him like its second nature, like it’s as easy as breathing. It only makes James like him all the more, because the majority of people in James’ life trip over themselves to please him, but not Regulus. Regulus would rather set his hair on fire than be nice to James, he knows.
Speaking of his hair, goddamn.
Still curly as ever, only it’s longer now and it wafts elegantly around the nape of his neck, some parts of it wavier than curly. It looks like a halo, James thinks. He’s an angel. A fire spitting angel, which James thinks is the best kind. He’s elegant and lean and perfect, his skin like a doll’s and his lips pouty and shaped like Cupid’s arrow. James would do anything to kiss him.
But James is a gentleman and he will not try anything on Regulus because he is Sirius’ brother, and he knows it would only complicate things between everyone. He also has no idea whether Regulus even likes him like that, everything seems to point to the negative considering they can’t have a conversation with Regulus insulting him at every opportunity. James thinks he’s rather insane to enjoy the way Regulus’ words cut into him, and he knows that just because he’s apparently gone mad doesn’t mean Regulus has. It doesn’t mean Regulus enjoys their verbal sparring as James does.
James is a gentleman. He isn’t going to attempt anything with Regulus, end of story.
He wishes he could remember that as a creamy, pale leg appears from behind the shower curtain and his brain completely short circuits. As the leg touches the ground an equally creamy and pale arm darts out to grab at the forest green towel hanging up on the wall, and then his entire body is out and James only just misses being flashed as the towel is brought up over the man’s crotch.
Regulus’ crotch, because that is Regulus who has just gotten out of the shower. Regulus, who was naked a moment ago. Who is still naked now technically. He hasn’t even wrapped the towel around himself yet, is only holding it over his crotch and James feels like he’s going to faint. He's so lightheaded. He wants to believe it’s the steam but he can’t bring himself to pretend that it’s not all that exposed skin in front of him.
Regulus hasn’t noticed he’s there yet as he brings the towel up to his face to wipe the water from his eyes. His skin is tinged pink from the heat of the water and James briefly wonders what it would be like to mark that skin, to leave it mottled with purples and reds and teeth marks. He grows hotter at every passing thought.
He’s broken from his reverie when Regulus attempts to bring the towel up to his hair to dry the edges briefly. James knows that he only does it a little because the towel is too heavy on his curls and usually he uses an old t-shirt of Sirius’ that he stole, but all this information flies out of the window with what’s left of his melting brain as Regulus raises the towel high enough that it threatens to expose him.
James lets out a rather embarrassing, strangled squeak at the prospect and is met with a frozen Regulus, who pauses and locks eyes with him, the steely grey going wide before narrowing playfully. He brings the towel down slowly, far too slowly for someone who is naked and vulnerable and naked, James thinks.
Regulus wraps the towel around his waist, slinging it so low on his hips that James thinks he’s going to go into cardiac arrest, and leans back against the wall behind him. He smirks at James as he runs a head through his curls. Beads of water drip from his hair, down his neck and tantalisingly down his torso, traversing the divots of his toned abdomen. James follows a single drop from his prominent collarbones, past his pink nipples and down, down, down his lovely stomach. Just as the droplet is falling into the trail of hair underneath his belly button, James is brought back into the present by a teasing cough.
Snapping his eyes back up to Regulus’ face, he finds that the boy is already looking at him with a single raised eyebrow. James feels his face flush and he prays that he doesn’t look like a tomato. Especially since Regulus is standing there like a Greek god, like someone who would be honoured by a multitude of sculptures that people like James would pay exorbitant amounts of money to stare at.
“Hi, James,” Regulus purrs, his eyes never leaving James’ face.
“Hi,” James replies faintly, his voice slightly croaky from where it’s mostly been open since Regulus stepped out of the shower.
Regulus grins like a shark but softens it when his tongue pokes out to wet his bottom lip. James is attached to the movement like a limpet to the side of a ship. “Did you step in here so that you could catch me naked, James?”
“What?! No! Of course not! It was an accident, I swear,” James proclaims, arms waving around like a madman as he tries to remain calm. He can’t believe Regulus caught him in his bathroom, naked from his shower, and is just lounging against the wall with a permanent smirk on his face.
James feels incredibly out of depth.
Regulus hums, a delicate hand coming up to trace at his collarbone and play with the water droplets there. He tilts his neck to give himself more access and huffs out a laugh as James’ eyes follow the movement religiously. “That’s a shame.”
James nods, blindly agreeing without really listening, intently focused on the longer finger as it trails back and forth on Regulus’ marble-like skin. James wants to bite it. He snaps back to reality when his brain catches on to what Regulus has said. “Wait, what?”
“You know,” Regulus changes the topic, bringing his hand down to rest at the knot of the towel and James feels like his heart is going to give up on him. And that his dick is going to become very noticeable in his trousers. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you blush this much. What’s gotten you so worked up, James?”
James wants to curse him because he knows what’s gotten him so worked up, the little shit. James was wrong, Regulus is not an angel, he's the devil incarnate and he refuses to stand here and be embarrassed by him. Not long ago were the days where James used to tease him until he was beaming a bright red. James doesn’t like how the tables have turned.
Distantly, James hears a victorious shout followed by what is definitely Sirius yelling his name like a madman. Regulus’ eyes flicker from James to the bathroom door and the latter realises that it’s the first time Regulus’ eyes have left him since he realised James was in here too.
James sends him a sheepish smile as he begins to walk himself backward, as if Regulus is a wild animal he needs to keep his eyes on at all times lest he turn his back and allow himself to be attacked. “Well, that’s my cue! Lovely seeing you again, Regulus.”
Regulus’ eyes twinkle as he runs a hand over his wet curls. “Truly a pleasure, James. Try not to make a habit of following me into the bathroom when I’m wet and naked, hm?”
The laugh that forces its way out of James’ mouth is strained and bordering on hysterical as he tries not to trip on his way out. He’s still looking at Regulus, who’s staring at him like he’s a meal he wants to devour, and he can’t even find himself able to speak English. Garbled noises are the only thing that he’s able to come up with and it only makes Regulus’ smirk ever more shark-like. With one last look at the enticing boy in front of him, James fumbles with the door handle and practically sprints out of the bathroom.
The alluring pull of Regulus’ silver eyes doesn't leave his mind.

When James makes it back to Sirius’ bedroom on the floor below, Sirius is right where James left him, only that he’s sprawled out on his bed on his stomach, legs swishing back and forth with one hand twirling his wavy hair. James feels like he’s entered a rom-com.
“Er, Pads?” He asks, bewildered by the image he’s presented with. The nickname is a long standing one that James can’t even remember the origins for, only that he, Sirius and their two friends Remus and Peter all have corresponding animal nicknames.
“Prongs!” Sirius bellows as he jumps up and throws himself into James’ arms, his legs wrapping around his waist.
Huffing at the sudden weight, James pulls away to look at Sirius’ face. “Hey, sexy. Fancy meeting you here.”
Sirius laughs, throwing his head back. When he returns his gaze to James it’s mischievous. “You know I love you, Jamie, but I’m afraid we cannot continue flirting like this. You see, I’m about to be a taken man.”
James almost drops him. “Oh shit, it worked?!”
“Well, almost,” Sirius informs as he unwraps his legs and pulls James to the bed with him. “Just as I was about to come and kill you, he responded saying that he also had something to tell me. I didn’t want to do it over the phone though, so I’ve invited him here. He’s on his way.”
“Fuck yeah!” James shouts and piles on top of Sirius, planting wet kisses all over his face as Sirius laughs and wraps his limbs around him like an octopus. James begins to dig his fingers into Sirius’ sides, delighting in the breathless giggles he lets out. “Hey, I’m just trying to get my fill, alright? My best mate is about to get a boyfriend.”
“James!” Breathless and bordering on hiccups, Sirius manoeuvres James so that they’re laying side to side facing each other. “James, if it all goes wrong I need you to beat Moony up for me.”
“What?! I can’t beat Remus up! Have you seen him angry? He’d kill me!” James exclaims, wrapping an arm around Sirius’ waist.
“James, you have to! You’re my best friend, it’s basically the law,” Sirius whines, snuggling into the crook of James’ neck.
Sensing the undertones of the conversation, James quietens down. Amongst all the joking and laughing, James can tell that Sirius is scared to confess his feelings for Remus. He can’t help but find it sweet because he has nothing to worry about, but James isn’t going to spoil that for him.
“Listen to me, Sirius. You’re going to be okay. Remus isn’t going to hurt you or be mean to you, and even if he miraculously is then we’ll sic Regulus on him, okay?” James strokes a hand through Sirius’ hair, speaking softly.
Sirius seems to mull this over, humming as he does so, and comes to a positive conclusion. “Oh, that’s brilliant. I mean, Regulus quite likes Remus so it might be a little hard to convince him, but if he sees how upset I am then I’m sure he’ll oblige. Good thinking, Prongs.”
They lay there silently after that, neither of them speaking but rather enjoying the moment they’re sharing in each other’s arms. It took a while for Sirius to get to this stage with James because of the way he was raised. James was always showered with love and affection from his parents, growing into a very physically affectionate person, whereas Sirius was the complete opposite. Love wasn’t given freely if at all in his family home, and the only other person with whom he shared affectionate physical touch was Regulus. Both brothers took a while to get used to James’ love language (one of them, anyway), but Sirius was the first to succumb to his cuddles.
“Hey,” Sirius breaks the silence. “I’m probably going to talk to Remus in the garden because the flowers he helped plant are blooming and I want to show him. Do you mind staying up here by yourself? You can always go off and find Regulus if you get lonely.”
The thought brings James back to the bathroom and all that creamy skin on display, beckoning him like a blank canvas desperate to be brought to life by some paint. James never thought of himself as an artist but right now he would gladly take to Regulus’ body with his mouth as the brush.
Holy fuck, he cannot be thinking of Regulus like this when he is literally wrapped around his older brother. Sirius would surely kill him if he knew what James was thinking about. Would hunt him down to the ends of the earth if he knew that James wants to kiss Regulus until his lips are red and swollen, and wants to mark every inch of his body until no one questions that Regulus is his. He wants to have Regulus whining and panting underneath him, or on top of him, or quite literally in any position, in any place and at any time. James isn’t fussy, he’ll take Regulus however he can get him.
Right, totally failed at not thinking filthy thoughts of Regulus when he’s cuddled up to Sirius. Shit.
“Jamie? Are you alright?”
“Yes!” James nearly shouts and clears his throat when Sirius pulls away to look at him funny. “Perfectly well, thanks Pads.”
Before Sirius can object, there’s a knock at the door followed by the doorbell, and both boys shoot up so quickly that they trip over one another and fall into a heap on the floor. For a moment all they do is lie there as they contemplate getting up. They’re groaning, elbows and knees in places where those should never be, and James is pushing at Sirius’ shoulders in an attempt to make him get up.
“I’ve changed my mind, I can’t do it. You go and answer the door, Jamie. Tell him I’ve fallen ill.”
James rolls his eyes at Sirius who flops onto his back and throws an arm over his face like a fainting maiden. “Really, Sirius? What am I supposed to tell him you’ve come down with in fifteen minutes?”
Sirius contemplates it for a second before he’s snapping his fingers. “I know! We’ll tell him that it’s something you’ve come down with and I’ve caught it because it’s contagious. The whole house is on lockdown. It’s perfect!”
“Pads, that is the worst idea I’ve ever heard. There’s no way Remus will believe that.”
Huffing, Sirius throws his arms over his head and practically melts into the floor. “Well, I don’t see you coming up with any genius ideas!”
“Here’s one,” James responds sarcastically. “How about you go down and answer the door like a normal person? Take him to the garden to look at his flowers and then confess? You know, the original plan?”
Sirius looks at him. “James, that is just ridiculous.”
“Right.”
“Dumbest idea you’ve ever had.”
James watches Sirius as he stares up at the high ceiling, fondness creeping over his features. “Sirius, do you not think you’re going to hurt Remus if you turn him away now? After you’ve said you need to tell him something?”
The doorbell rings a second time.
In a rare moment of vulnerability, Sirius turns pleading eyes on James. “I can’t get the door, James. I can’t.”
James nods encouragingly. “You can, Sirius.”
“I can’t.”
The two of them are interrupted by the sounds of feet padding down the stairs. Unfortunately, James knows the sounds of those feet, and has practically committed them to memory. Regulus doesn’t enter the bedroom but he does call past the door, “I’ll get it, then, despite being a whole floor above. Tossers.”
Sirius and James stare at each other with wide eyes before they’re scrambling to get up, yelling out to Regulus, a cacophony of deep voices shouting up and down the stairs at each other.
“No, we’ll get it!”
“Reggie, you little shit, come back here!”
They bound down the stairs, practically flying past them as they race to get to the door before Regulus. It’s not like they’re worried Regulus will say or not anything harmful, as Sirius said Regulus is surprisingly fond of Remus and often seeks him out for intellectual conversation, or so he says. It’s just that Regulus is well aware of Sirius’ feelings toward Remus and he makes it his life’s mission to make every possible hint known to man.
James laughs wildly as they race against Regulus to get to the front door, Sirius cursing at the size of the house as they go, and once they reach the final set of stairs James hops on the bannister to slide down the the bottom.
It’s in vain, no matter how fun it was, because Regulus is already opening the door to a bored looking Remus. His expression changes dramatically when he sees the shit-eating grin on Regulus’ face, along with a panting James who looks wild with his hair sticking up everywhere, and Sirius who is a third of the way down the steps and clinging to the bannister as if he’s going to faint.
“Er, is this a bad time?” Remus asks, eyes darting between the three of them. He looks faintly amused.
Sirius shouts, “Yes, this is a terrible time, actually!”
Just as Regulus croons, “This is a wonderful time, Remus, do come in.”
The younger boy practically drags him in and Sirius’ eyes burn at the contact of their hands. James grins at Remus and brings him into a hug that is quickly reciprocated. “Hey, Moony.”
“James, good to see you,” Remus murmurs before he pulls away to stare at Sirius who still hasn’t moved from the stairs. Remus ignores the snickering from Regulus and walks towards him. “Hi, Sirius.”
Sirius feels as though he’s going to faint. God, Remus is just so pretty. He’s all caramel hair and tan skin, scars from a childhood accident crossing from his eye, over his nose and to the corner of his lip, and Sirius hasn’t seen anyone as beautiful as him. He’s tall, towering over Sirius and making him feel as though he could be devoured in one bite. Sirius would let him. He would let Remus do anything he wanted, even if it meant consuming him whole.
“Remus,” he breathes, heart pounding as Remus offers his hand out to him and he takes it, letting Remus assist him in walking down the stairs.
Once he’s at the bottom he has to look up to meet Remus’ eyes, crinkled and warm, and he still hasn’t let go of his hand. In fact, Remus’ thumb is caressing his hand, the touch gentle and loving. Sirius is definitely going to faint.
“Something you wanted to tell me, sweetheart?” Remus asks quietly, but it doesn’t matter because Regulus still hears it and fails to smother his laughter.
Before James realises what he’s doing, he’s bringing one hand up to cup the boy’s nape and the other presses firmly against his mouth, cutting any sounds off and muffling them under his large palm. Regulus’ eyes flash with promise and danger, and James feels it dance along his skin like lightning. He doesn’t say anything as they continue to stare at each other, but it’s okay because now Remus and Sirius can continue without Regulus teasing them.
“Not here,” Sirius sends a glare towards Regulus, who is paying him no mind now that James has his hands on him. “Do you want to go to the garden? Your flowers we planted are blooming. We can talk there.”
Intertwining their fingers, Remus nods with a smile. “I would love to.”
The two of them make their way towards the garden, but Sirius turns back at the last second, looking at James and Regulus who are still staring at one another. “James? You okay, mate?”
Snapping out of the haze, James flies away from Regulus as though he’s been bitten. He has to look at his hand to check that Regulus didn’t actually nip him. The boy sends that infuriatingly hot smirk his way, like he knows every dirty thing that James has ever thought about him, and James can feel himself beginning to sweat.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” James responds, voice abnormally high pitched. “Think I’m going to go and play video games in your room.”
“Alright, mate! Have fun,” Sirius chirps before he’s dragging a sappy looking Remus along with him.
The silence in the foyer is so loaded that James thinks he could fire a gun with it. He’s instantly brought back to half an hour ago when he was in the bathroom, steam clouding his judgement and Regulus leaning back against the wall, water dripping down his lithe body looking like the figment of James’ wildest dreams and worst intentions.
It’s clear to him now, he wants to do the dirtiest, most filthy things to Regulus.
It’s also clear that he can’t do them without possibly ruining his friendship with Sirius, so he nods once to Regulus and attempts to make his way back upstairs. Regulus’ voice stops him like a siren’s call, and James is but a lowly sailor lost at sea and begging for a miracle. “Wouldn’t you rather play with me, James?”
It’s all he can do not to groan aloud. “Regulus,” he strains, voice tight.
“It’s okay,” Regulus purrs, stalking forward like a predator until his front is up against James’ back. The older boy sucks in a sharp breath. “I know you want to, James. Just let go. Give in to me.”
The thought is so tempting. All James wants to do is turn around and press his lips to Regulus’ in a smouldering kiss. He wants to walk him backwards until he’s shoving Regulus harshly into a wall, licking his way into the boy’s mouth and pressing a thigh against his crotch.
James whines at the thought, and he can’t even bring himself to be embarrassed at the sound when he feels Regulus smirk against his neck. He gasps when Regulus’ lips brush the sensitive skin of his neck, “Regulus.”
“I know you want me, James,” Regulus taunts, his naughty fingers brushing against James’ hips. “Turn around. You can have me.”
It’s the press of his soft lips against his neck that forcibly pulls James from the moment, eyes snapping open so quickly that he doesn't recall ever closing them. He practically jumps away from Regulus, the laughter that bubbles from his throat sounding more hysterical and breathless by the second.
He doesn’t turn around as he shouts, “Have to go! Great to see you again, Reg!”
James makes it two floors up in record speed, diving into Sirius’ double bed and groaning loudly. He ignores the aching problem in his trousers and tries to think of anything else. It’s a while before he can bring himself to unbury himself from the pillows of Sirius’ bed and actually play a game like he said.
All he can think about is that he would much rather be playing with Regulus and how he won’t allow himself to.

It’s the middle of the night, sometime past one o’clock, and James is wide awake.
After he’d spent most of the day playing video games alone, Sirius and Remus had entered his bedroom with matching grins and shiny red lips. James took one look at them before he lept up from the bean bag and pulled them both into a tight hug. He took great pleasure in telling both of them that he knew their feelings were reciprocated and that sitting watching them both pine was beyond painful, but that he’s happy they’re together now.
Sirius looked incredibly put off that James had kept the secret from him, because they don’t do secrets, which in turn made James feel guilty because he was keeping his secret desires for his brother from him. James tries to reason with himself that he’s keeping it from him for his own good. After all, it isn’t like James is going to act on his feelings, so it’s never going to come to light. James is going to die with this secret.
Remus looked pleased at the news that James had kept his secret, and James had pouted at him because really, Moony? Do you have such little faith in me? Remus had rolled his eyes and pulled James into his side.
They spent the rest of the day talking about everything and anything, as they so usually do, but this time it was more geared towards Sirius and Remus and their endless yearning for one another. They played video games and spoke of the literature Remus was currently reading that James took an interest in. He'd recently read Pride and Prejudice and loved it, so Remus was giving him more recommendations every day.
Once their conversation featured more yawning than words, Sirius had dragged the two of them into his bed and snuggled up facing Remus, pulling James close behind him and sighing in content when both boys wrapped their arms around his middle. Remus rolled his eyes at him before getting comfortable, a small yet happy smile on his face. James had snuggled right in, comforted by the familiar smell of Sirius’ shampoo and Remus’ cologne.
He thought he’d sleep through the night soundly, but he was wrong.
So now he lies awake on his back, staring at the ceiling because if he doesn’t then he’ll end up staring at the way Remus and Sirius are curled perfectly into one another like puzzle pieces. At some point, Sirius had turned around and Remus had pulled him tightly into the curve of his body, his face burying into Sirius’ neck almost possessively.
James hadn’t felt like he was particularly welcome after that.
He sighs dramatically, very happy for his friends but unable to stop the loneliness from creeping in. Fidgeting, he tries to get comfortable but ultimately he knows that it’s going to take a while for him to fall asleep again, if he ever will. Once he’s had enough of pretending to sleep, James carefully lifts the blanket from his body and sneaks out of the bed, cautious not to wake his two friends up in the process.
He shuffles from the bed, careful not to stand on the floorboards that squeak or trip over the bean bags he knows they didn’t tidy up. Having been to Sirius’ house since he moved in years ago, treating it as his second home, James knows all the spots in the house that make noises, like the spot just in front of Sirius’ bedroom door, the fifth and eighth step in the staircase up to Regulus’ floor, and the three in a row on the staircase down to the kitchen. James hops over those but miscalculates due to his tiredness and accidentally steps on the third one.
He winces as he pauses, waiting to hear the telltale sign that someone has woken up, and breathes a sigh of relief when he doesn’t hear anything. The house is still slumbering, as James wishes he was, which he’s thankful for because little Dora is a nightmare when she gets woken up. James completely understands because he, too, gets incredibly grumpy if he’s woken up randomly in the night. Sirius jokes that it’s the only time he isn’t a ray of sunshine.
Manoeuvring his way quietly down the rest of the stairs, James pads into the kitchen and goes about getting himself a glass of water. He thinks he could find his way around this kitchen even if he was drunk, blindfolded and under some temporary spell of amnesia.
Leaning against the counter, James admires the way the moon shines in through the windows. It’s full, James having to squint to make sure it is actually a full moon, and it looks ethereal sitting in the dark blue of the midnight sky. Looking up at it, James wonders if the moon ever gets lonely hanging in the sky by itself and he can’t help but feel like the moon sometimes. It’s surrounded by glistening stars and yet it is still alone, shining brightly. James wonders if it has a favourite star.
James sure does.
A creak that sounds very similar to the one James caused on the stairs earlier interrupts his train of thought. He waits with bated breath to see who he’s going to have to have an awkward midnight conversation with and prays it isn’t Remus or Sirius, because he doesn’t know how to tell them that sharing a bed with them makes him feel lonely.
He’s saved from that conversation when his favourite star walks through the archway.
Regulus is as beautiful at night as he is in the day, only now he’s softened by sleep and looking deliciously rumpled. His pale skin gleams in the moonlight making him look like his namesake and James just wants to bask in his glow for the rest of his life.
He’s wearing the smallest shorts known to man, so little as they ride up his creamy thighs that James thinks they look more like underwear. Perhaps they are, but James’ brain has melted from his head and he’s now trying to operate without one. All he can manage to do is stare at Regulus unblinkingly. The boy still hasn’t noticed James as he shuffles in the kitchen, one hand combing through his dark hair, which gives the older boy more time to ogle.
Besides the tiny shorts, Regulus is wearing a dark green crop top, a colour that too closely resembles his bath towel and James feels his face heat at the memory. His perfectly toned stomach is on display, showcasing his lithe figure and James is so tempted to give in to his desires and mark that skin. He wants to see the indents from his teeth littered all over that body.
But James is a gentleman and a good friend. He will not maul Regulus. He will not even entertain the idea.
His luck runs out when he takes a rather large gulp of water and Regulus’ eyes snap to him immediately. He doesn’t do anything for a second, other than halt in his tracks with groggy eyes, but then he’s moving towards James with the determination of a snake waiting to strike. James knows that these animals have the patience to wait it out until the very best moment and he has no doubt that Regulus is willing to do just that.
Eyes shining with promise and pleasure, Regulus stops a few feet in front of James. “Fancy seeing you here.”
James raises an eyebrow, looking more confident than he feels. “We’re in your house. It’s not really much of a surprise, is it?”
Humming, Regulus makes his way to the fridge to pour himself a glass of milk. Setting the carton down on the counter, he reaches up to grab a glass from the cabinet. James watches the way his cropped top rises even more, the hint of a pink nipple teasing him and he places the glass of water down before he does something stupid like drop it.
He pours the milk into the glass, places the carton back in the fridge and then leans back against the counter, looking at James intensely. They’re further apart now, but the atmosphere in the kitchen is so delicate, so loaded that James feels like they’re trapped in a box together. He can smell Regulus from where he leans against the sink. He smells like seduction and ruin.
“I just assumed you’d be fast asleep with your boyfriend and his boyfriend.”
James rolls his eyes. “Sirius is not my boyfriend.”
Raising the glass of milk to his lips, Regulus shrugs. “Could have fooled me with all that kissing I heard earlier.”
“Are you jealous, Regulus?” James prods, knowing it’s likely to stir up something he can’t entertain but unable to stop himself. Maybe it’s because they’re here together in the dead of night under a full moon that James feels as though he might give into the insanity calling his name.
When he lowers the glass there’s a little drop of milk sitting in the corner of his lips and James thinks he’s going to go crazy if he doesn’t lick it right now. Regulus places the glass down on the counter and stalks over to James very slowly, slinky and sensual like a cat. “You know I am, James.”
James feels his breathing quicken as Regulus doesn’t stop until he’s face to face with him, nose to nose like Regulus doesn’t realise how badly he’s affecting him right now. Or maybe he does and he doesn’t care. Maybe this is what he wanted all along.
Regulus places his hands either side of James, effectively caging him in and ceasing any escape that James may attempt to make. He whispers into the quiet, tension filled space between them, James’ shaky breathing the only sound other than his voice. “Maybe now you won’t run away from me, baby.”
“Regulus,” James breathes, bumping his nose against Regulus’ as the younger boy toys with him, bringing his face closer to James’ as though he’s going to kiss him and then pulling away again. “We can’t do this.”
Smirking at the already worked up state, Regulus stares into James’ hooded brown eyes. “We can. Just let go, James. I know you want this. Why not just give in?”
Speaking hushedly, James’ eyes flutter against his will, breathless at the intensity of the silver eyes staring him down. “I can’t. Sirius would never forgive me.”
Regulus groans quietly, hands flexing where they’re gripping the counter. “Sirius has nothing to do with this.”
“You’re his brother, Regulus. And I’m his best friend. I’m not meant to feel what I do for his younger brother.”
“And what is it that you feel, James?” Regulus asks, one hand sneaking along the counter to rest at James’ hip. “Tell me, what do you feel for me? Is it platonic?” James whines softly and shakes his head. Regulus continues, “Tell me, James. Tell me what you want.”
“I want to ruin you,” James breathes passionately, his already weak resolve crumbling pathetically. “I feel like every time I’m near you I’m going to go insane because all I want to do is reach out and kiss you. I want to consume you whole. I want to do every wicked, filthy thing I’ve ever thought about and let you do even worse to me. When I saw you in the bathroom I wanted nothing more than to join you in that shower and fuck you against the wall. Regulus, I dream of you and nothing else.”
Regulus’ breath hitches and he fails to stifle the moan that threatens to leave his throat at the dirty words James says to him. He can’t help the way his hips stutter forward and press into James’, their bodies aligned against the counter top. “Fuck, James. I want that too. I want it all.”
“But that’s not all,” James gasps at the feeling of hardness that rocks into his own. “I want to stay up talking to you about everything and nothing. I want to sleep in your bed and pull you into my arms as we fall asleep. I want you to explain the essay you’re writing for your literature degree and all the books you love. I want to impress you with my knowledge of Pride and Prejudice so much that you kiss me. I want to go on walks with you, have picnics and lick every insult from your lips as you berate me for being sappy and idiotic. I want you to be mine not just for the night but forever.”
“James,” Regulus responds before he’s crashing his lips to James’, moaning in delight as the older boy responds instantly, his hands coming up to cup Regulus’ jaw. He mumbles into James’ mouth, “You fucking idiot, I’ve been in love with you since I was fifteen.”

Or,
Remus is in love with Sirius and is convinced that if he has to watch them kiss any longer then he's going to implode. It's a good thing Marlene has different plans for the evening.
