Dead Space (2023) - Social themes and Unitology

I was a big fan of the original trilogy and I cam to this remake with high hopes. I got pretty much what I expected i.e. a recapturing of the visuals and sounds and scares of the original with a tightened narrative and some new bells and whistles. I sort of hope this leads EA to revive the series, because I feel like this setting has themes even more relevant in 2023 than they were in 2008.

Settings like the Expanse and Dead Space, and even older ones like Alien, try to imagine what the world would look like if (in the words of Cody Johnston) you try to build Star Trek but skip a bunch of steps. You get a highly-technological society that's also a hellhole, owned either by mega-corporations like CEC, or de-facto totalitarian regimes like EarthGov, which constantly try to out-do one another in repression, control and dystopianism. Workers are inevitably *fucked* in a setting like this; there's too much power, technology and wealth concentrated at the top for any sort of social change to be viable. It almost feels like it's too late.

And all you have to do to see the seeds of that world is look out the window, at the society we have in the 2020s.

Dead Space in particular also carries a third element to the far-future space-dystopia: grift religions. In a world where most people live under some form of repression, hope can become a commodity. And that inevitably will lead someone to figure out how to manufacture, package and sell it. The movie Babylon AD portrays something like this with the Noelite church, but Dead Space does it more elaborately.

Back when I played the 2008 version of Dead Space, the Church of Unitology was its most outlandish and least believable aspect. I could believe aliens that reanimated dead tissue, but this? It was *so obviously* a con job, so clearly aimed at bringing a minimal amount of hope to the lower classes while creating the most amount of power for itself. It was so transparently similar to the Scientologist cult, that I had a hard time believing anyone could ever fall for it. I didn't think a modern, post-Enlightenment society could be tricked by this shallow veneer of superstitious, spiritualist "hope".

But then 15 years passed. I grew up and learned about how nobody is completely immune to cult conditioning. I found out how rare critical thinking actually is. Then Qanon happened. I started reading about a cult that tricked a bunch of bigoted, self-righteous people into giving its figureheads money and worshipping a transparently self-serving con-man. I heard people talk with conviction about the certainty of the Great Awakening.

I basically watched the American public (and some Europeans) get tricked by a cult that's about a thousand times less refined and well-constructed than Unitology. It worked. A bunch of shitposts by internet ratfucker Ron Watkins triggered a political movement with evident religious overtones.

Late capitalism so thoroughly rots the brain of people that some will be ready to believe anything if it will give them a feeling of hope, no matter how feeble and transparently artificial.

I'm not trying to say that some garish horror videogame is providing prophecy on the shape of the future. But I do think it's illustrative of the necessity for social change in order for humanity to avoid living in a dystopia that's even worse and stupider than anything imagined by fiction. It's such an obvious and inescapable necessity that even a game published by one of the worst companies in the world can capture it. The worst direct critique of capitalism Dead Space can come up with is a shitty grafitto in a bathroom stall. But indirectly, the inevitability of collapse is almost taken for granted.

Know I pretty much wrote this same post about a week ago, but it IS still a major topic of discussion, so it bears repeating. And in repeating, I get to expand a little.

I really wish we could have the good faith discussions/debates about how to use the "AI" tech (quotes because yeah, we all know it's not artificial intelligence, it's mostly just art theft plugged into a computer blender). Because I can see how there is at least room for finding the ethical way of utilizing it for positive purposes. There are ways that something good could come of this stuff.

IF we had the right safeguards in place. And that's a pretty big if, considering that tech bros pushing this stuff as "the next big thing" in the same way they did NFTs and crypto and the blockchain and the metaverse and every other big tech cam in like the last five plus years and the Hollywood studios who are basically trying to use "AI generation" to replace writers and actors so that there are fewer people to cut in to the profits have pretty much poisoned the well on this.

Like, obviously, we do have voice actors speaking out against it now, so let's just remember that this is a hypothetical from the "arguing in good faith" universe, but I could see how game mods with voice generation could be a net positive - you get to allow people to expand their favorite games and actually involve the characters, you could have cut, unfinished, and deleted scenes and dialogues restored in full (like, as a Knights of the Old Republic fan, I'd love to see the full KOTOR 2 endings restored in some fashion beyond just the restoration mod), as a queer gamer, I'd love to have proper romance mods allow me to romance characters without gaps of silence or the odd misgendering... I see how this could be used for positive purposes.

(Since I mentioned the voice actors speaking against it, I do feel bound to acknowledge that there's also good reason that they are, since their voices are their acting tool, and if they don't have a way to maintain control of the use of their voice, then they lose access to their livelihood - the examples I gave were purely in the realm of fan created content, not something that destroys and replaces the demand of the voice actors as paid talent.)

And there's the fact that, as a Star Trek fan, I DO see this stuff as basically a stepping stone to the creation of holodeck technology, something that I certainly wish I could live to see be a reality.

I'd like to come up with more hypothetical good faith uses of this tech beyond that example, but the reality is that there's just no reason to believe that the good faith is there, at the very least as the tech is being put out there as it is now. Any good faith argument is centered in the idea of it being something done as an individual use, or drawing from donated or public domain works, rather than destroying or replacing the involvement of the actual artist.

And the pushers of these things are just looking at them at best as a way to keep from paying people for their work, and at worst to effectively justify trapping people in the work of mindless misery menial work because the thing that they could be doing instead of making dimes for their employers is being automated, rather than the things no one actually wants to do. And without that good faith in the conversation, without any reason to believe that the people who would be most profiting off this tech can, could, or would use it responsibly, that discussion cannot even begin to take place, let alone come to solutions.

Y'know, it's the basic "this isn't an inherently bad idea, except it's an idea that is being produced while existing under capitalism" issue.

Star Trek: Of Gods and Men

Imagine if SyFy channel got the rights to make Star Trek and did a movie with every available and affordable Trek actor they could get hold of during their low-budget mockbuster phase. This brings back so many Trek actors, some as their characters and some as new ones. More callbacks than your average Lower Decks episode and some are deep cuts (recognise Uhura's husband?) Clunky as hell but full of heart. Nostalgia overload, and my favourite fan film.

Star Trek: Renegades

The follow-up to Of Gods and Men skipped from the late 23rd century to the late 24th. Set in 2388 it was intended as a pilot for a fan-funded web series. Alexa Singh and her band of misfits are recruited by Admiral Chekov for a secret mission.

Renegades: The Requiem

Following the Axanar lawsuit (and Renegades was doing similarly-dodgy bootleg Trek merchandising), Renegades VERY hastily (as in, on day two of filming) scrubbed all Star Trek references for their follow-up/tie-up episode. Admiral Chekov became "The Admiral", Tuvok became a human named Kovok. The Andorian character lost her antennae. Uhura became Jemison. The Federation became the Confederation and Section 31 became Sector 6 - all while continuing the storyline from the previous, Star Trek-set adventure.

Star Trek: Horizon

Set during the era of Star Trek: Enterprise and mostly using green screens (very well disguised with JJ Abrams Star Trek '09-style lens flares and shaky cam), a new cast of characters on board the Discovery NX-05 are sent across time and space during the Earth/Romulan war. Ties in with the Iconians, Future Guy and manages action scenes with very little budget. The Axanar drama scuppered the planned sequel, and the creator has gone on to original projects.

Star Trek: First Frontier

Extremely clunky but charming, this is the first voyage of the USS Enterprise under Captain Robert April (who is now an American unlike the British accented James Doohan-voiced character in The Animated Series' "The Counter Clock Incident")

Star Trek: Continues

Star Trek Continues is an entire 4th season of The Original Series. The storytelling and presentation is very authentic to the original show with a few exceptions: a new ship's counsellor character played by the Captain's then-girlfriend, and that almost all episodes are sequels to TOS stories which almost never happened in the classic show. Scotty is played by Chis Doohan, son of James who played Scotty in TOS. Sulu is the late Grant Imahara of Mythbusters fame. Lots of familiar faces show up. Sadly tainted by Vic Mignoga's real life scandals, but *if* you can look past that, well worth watching. The link above is my favourite episode, the "Mirror, Mirror" sequel.

Star Trek New Voyages/Phase II

The grandfather of modern fan films. Some episodes are well worth watching, others not so much. It went from a group of friends having a LARP to semi-professional episodes with so much behind the scenes drama someone could probably write a book about one day. "To Serve All My Days" and "World Enough and Time" are their best episodes.

James Cawley's sets are now the Official Star Trek Set Tour in Ticonderoga, NY.
