I love Bashir, too. He's one of those characters that gets (or at least got) a bad wrap in some corners of the fandom. There was a podcast I used to listen to where the hosts hated Bashir because they'd heard from somewhere that the producers had intended Bashir to be a sort of playboy heart throb, with a bit of that thirsty Kirk energy, because the actor was young and good looking (and i believe the current consensus is that he's now distinguished and even more good looking). If you've ever seen that "DS9 Bible" that used to show up on convention merch tables, i believe that Bashir's character description in that thing did give you that impression. (It's been ages since I read that thing, maybe my memory plays tricks.) However, when you watch the show, and pay attention to what it's showing you, and ignore whatever info you got from outside the "text", that's clearly not what Bashir is. It's what he *thinks* he is when he first rolls onto the station. But I don't think the narrative agrees with him. All the characters in this show go on journeys. Being a young genius who thinks he's hot shit is where Julian Bashir's journey begins. Whether some producer wanted him to be a lady's man, or some initial sketch had portrayed him that way, the actual character in the actual show is actually something quite different. Certainly today his relationships with Miles and Garak resonate much more than his ill fated pursuit of Dax. And that's another old man fan story about not giving fandom too much credit, because that shit can steal your joy.

Do fans still like series' bibles? Or have we all realized they're kind of pointless if you're not a writer working on the first half dozen or so episodes? There are certainly far more kawaii things in the dealers' room these days, and that's a good thing.

not enough martial arts happening on ds9. jadzia's bat'leth skills are insane but we need more about how starfleet surely requires their officers to train self-defense in an individual and communal basis, especially in times of war.

kira and bajoran martial arts and their connection to spiritual practices as developed by different resistance cells - she'd do great as a much-requested monastic dojo teacher.

it would be lovely as a different form to contribute to her community, making use of her resistance days's skills and recognizing them while also celebrating new and old traditions.

o'brein and bashir's war games are escapism during an actual wartime, sure, but we need and deserve an 'miles o'brein secret coraíocht champion' episode. holo fighting rings!

keiko teaching basic jujutsu skills to her students, ferengi biting-and-kicking techniques saving nog and jake's life at least once.

give sisko a bo staff and the chance to whoop dukat's ass. i think this justifies itself.

last, but now least, doctor bashir. julian, who is constantly holding back his strength, speed and reaction time. he can learn any technique so fast, gauges every injury he allows himself to take, every choice to stand out - in microseconds. his violence is his own worst nightmare, for all his self-righteous quick temper, and especially because of it.

put him in a corner and pin him down. make him watch his friends get hurt until he starts getting feral. blood in his teeth, and all hell let loose.

Nah. Miles is so married that he is completely oblivious to anyone who Isn't Keiko. There's Keiko and everyone else.

As far as Garak? Eh. Minority opinion here but Cardassia's ruling class would probably be okay with Garak taking a human bed warmer (half of them had Bajoran sex slaves back in the day), but they would absolutely shit bricks over "This is my adopted son. Heir to the House of Tain and all the dirty secrets." (And no, he DIDN'T inform Julian of this ahead of time.) Garak is the type of chronic pain in the ass who would totally take whatever option scares his enemies more.

As far as Ezri? Definitely took a bit to warm up to the idea but the genius on that ship is that both of them are big pariahs on their home worlds. His genetic enhancements mean he's fucked if he tries going back to Earth and the Trill home world would probably murder Ezri (like they did Joran) because that Joining was NOT sanctioned. So they really have nowhere to go other than the ass end of space.
