Good Shit - Penn Zero: Part Time Hero
WARNING: Wipe your shoes on the mat when you come in the house. Thank you, take care out there, and enjoy.
This was the best Sliders AU ever
Anybody remember Sliders? No? Okay. Penn Zero is an alternate universe show where three kids valiant kids (Penn, Boone, & Sashi) go through different timelines to solve massive problems that exist there while making sure they get home on time. Sashi is best slayer, Boone is worst player. It reminds me of an old Disney pilot, Fluppy Dogs, where it was like Infinity Train crossed with Homeward Bound. It was a pretty fun pilot.
youtube
The 80s was a fluffy, bizarre time
Penn-Zero, while being adventurous and pretty imaginative, can be very heartful while still being a basic good vs evil series. You may have the same six characters in every episode, but you learn a lot about them both in the universes they explore and in their original world. It can be formulaic, but the execution in the episodes are what make or break your investment in them. But seriously: Clowns, anime, pirates, plushies, dragons, action figures
DINO Riders? That was the best version; this show had everything
If thereâs any downside to the show, it would be the humor thatâs considerably hit-or-miss depending on who you are. Iâd say the best thing about this series is Larry, main villain Rippenâs sidekick, just for the fact that he practically the successful person in this series (being a millionaire and the Principal of the heroesâ school) and yet enjoys being second banana in the plots for evil. That and Larry Wilmore is just an all-around cool guy like, man, if I could just have breakfast with him, Iâd be a happy critic.
But like the Nightly Show, many good things must come to an abrupt end for bullshit reasons
Yeah, Penn Zero unfortunately ended after two seasons, with its second season premiering everything in less than two weeks. I mean, for fuck sakes, Disney just wanted this done and over with, huh? The 7D, another 2 season Disney cartoon, got to air their last season weekly all last year; this is an insult. Looking at the ratings for Penn Zero, they were in the 0.10 levels, which is the worst attention your show could get. I hate this. They rarely hyped it up on TV, it binged everything in a matter of days, and it will probably get reruns around dead morningtime with other finished shows while stupid shit like Walk the Prank and Kirby Buckets gets to live practically gallantly. Wander, Milo Murphyâs Law, Star vs. Evil, and Billy Dilley suffered the same treatment, and it sucks that Penn Zero generally got the worst of it. *Whispers* The same thing happened to Kirby Buckets? *Whispers* Dear lord. Disney XD just doesnât care.
Pray for Ducktales...let it thrive on a channel that punishes
Quick side note: I remember reviewing this cartoon back when it and my Critic days were flourishing. And in addition to saying, âOKO, this damn show is the shizz, alright!â, I remember saying this in headline bold...
âPlus, Sashi Kobayashi is the peanut butter to Penn Zeroâs jam. Pennsashi is a definite ship to sail, no contest you hear?!â- Me, Feb 16th, 2015
Now, I donât want to say Iâm the best but...
Ask and you shall receive, you feel me?
For a short lived series, I had a great time seeing this series. The many worlds they brought to life still make this the most clever show imaginable and Iâm glad the creators did all they could to give it that original zing to dimension hopping shows like Rick and Morty, Time Warp Trio, and (again) Sliders could do with their universal premises. It was satisfactory, with good vibes that co-creator Jared Bush can make something as good as this and Zootopia.
At least there are good things coming in exchange

Arbor Park Intermediate School Faculty and staff stand in the shape of a heart in the schoolâs gym. The educators are wearing T-shirts in honor of reading teacher Kris Burns who died suddenly of heart failure in September. The teachers purchased the T-shirts or made donations which will be given to the American Heart Association in Burnâs name.
If you picked up a copy of the  Citizen or Enterprise newspaper last week you found it wrapped around our annual Washington County Progress edition. This slick covered publication is packed with 100 or so photos, not counting the advertising and nearly as many articles about the people and history of our county.  Progress always reminds me of Thanksgiving dinner â all that planning and preparation for a feast that it is placed before us and then consumed in one sitting with plenty of leftovers to return to later.
The planning for this 80 plus page section begins in October and much of the interviewing, writing and photography is completed before the new year begins.  I have the easy part, and I think the fun part which is making the portraits and producing images that matches and hopefully enhance the fine writing by my colleagues.  I enjoy accompanying my co-workers or going out on my own to meet these interesting and accomplished people and to find unique visual ways to tell their stories.
Last week the P-T and Citizen newspapers were also packed with stories and images chronicling performances by Washington County Athletes at the State wrestling tournament at Century Link in Omaha.  I was pleased to assist sports editor Grant Egger in capturing images that helped to tell the stories of our wrestlersâ performances at the state meet.  I can totally relate to Grantâs comments that sports writers attempt to capture, âThe powerful moments that, unfortunately, not everyone can see up close.â  I try to do the same thing in pictures.
For the past 13 years I have covered state wrestling, first in Lincoln when the tournament was held at the Bob Devaney, and now at Century Link in Omaha. In my opinion, there is no other sports event quite like it. I am addicted to the energy and to the intense rollercoaster ride of emotion that erupts from the mats that fill the arena.
Another fun activity that I usually photograph in February each year is the K-2 Jump Rope for Heart. Photographs of the kids jumping rope will be featured in the Classroom of the Week in the Enterprise. The âPie the Teacherâ assemblies celebrate the efforts by students to collect money for the American Heart Association. Some of the pictures of smiling students and their pie-in-the-face teachers are in the paper today. This year the combined total for the K-2 effort approached $17,000. That is no small piece of change!
I get online comments once-in-awhile from people who think it is terrible that kids hit their teachers with pies, but the pies are more placed and smooshed than thrown, and always with TLC. Â Teachers and celebrity staff members happily volunteer and literally stand in line to get pied.
And finally, I want to comment on the Arbor Park and Blair Community Schools fundraiser in honor of my wife Kris Burns. Arbor Park physical education teacher Sandy Moore contacted me weeks ago to tell me about the T- shirt fund raiser they had planned. Sandy knew Kris well, and told me that the tee shirt they were designing would be simple and a design that Kris might wear. And she was right.  On Wednesday, wearing my âForever a Piece of our Heartsâ tee shirt I was in the Arbor Park gymnasium before school with assistant editor Leeanna Ellis to do my job and take the picture of the Arbor Park teachers standing in the shape of a heart.  The picture and the accompanying story are something I will always treasure.
There is an intimacy to my job that is incredible.  Whether I am working on my own or with co-workers I try to make portraits that capture the qualities and character of the people in Washington County.
Arbor Park teachers and Joe Burns wearing T-Shirts in honor of Kris Burns
Drayk Bowen âpiesâ his teacher Hollie Booth.
Angel McKinney pies physical education teacher Marla Ryan.
Blairâs Walker Moore waits to be introduced at the State Wrestling Championship Final at Century Link in Omaha.
Spectators and wrestlers stand facing the American flag during the playing of the Star Spangled Banner at Century Link Center in Omaha.
Arlington wrestler Riley Smith
Blair Wrestler Jackson Nielsen
