Reopened bridge but line stays damaged
02/05/2024
Bridge Link Drive is reopened after bushfires damaged it and the Wallangarra railway line. Picture: CONTRIBUTED
By Lucy Waldron
Five months after bushfires ravaged Wallangarra, the small town is still grappling with the aftermath of the destruction caused.
At the beginning of the year, residents faced the challenge of navigating their daily lives without the use of the main bridge connecting both sides of the railway.
The unknown in repairing the town’s main bridge by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) left locals frustrated, with concerns over the provided detours. However, the TMR assured residents that repairs were underway and that they had provided the safest alternative options.
In a statement to the media, the Southern Downs Regional Council announced the completion of structural repairs to the township’s key bridge on Bridge Link Drive, bringing relief to the Wallangarra community.
Southern Downs Mayor Melissa Hamilton acknowledged the Wallangarra community’s resilience during the challenges of recovery and said the reopening of the bridge is a significant milestone for the township in its recovery journey.
“The closure of this bridge cut an important link to both sides of the township, and I know from discussions with locals that they have been very keen for the bridge to re-open and to be able to move forward again after the November bushfires,” Mayor Hamilton said.
“On behalf of the Wallangarra community, council thanks Queensland Rail for their prompt response and repairs to the bridge structure.”
Queensland Rail Head of Regional Scott Cornish thanked the local community for its patience while crews repaired the bridge.
“We’re pleased to announce the Bridge Link Drive road-over-rail bridge reopened to road and pedestrian traffic on Thursday 18 April following the completion of repair works,“ Mr Cornish said.
However, Southern Downs MP James Lister raised concerns about the repair works on the Wallangarra railway itself.
Minister for Transport and Main Roads, Hon Bart Mellish, stated that currently, the bridge repair is the only ongoing work on the Wallangarra line.
“Queensland Rail has advised the line experienced significant damage, with four timber bridges destroyed, more than 1000 sleepers requiring replacement, and damage to an additional timber bridge,” he said.
“Queensland Rail understands the Wallangarra branch line is important to steam train enthusiasts, however work across the network needs to be prioritised to keep freight and people moving throughout the state.
“As such, the line between Stanthorpe and Wallangarra will remain closed while Queensland Rail continues to investigate options.”
Despite the challenges, Queensland Rail has shown support for heritage operations throughout the Southern and Western Downs, including lending a heritage steam locomotive to the SDSR Association and granting the association use of the historic Warwick station through a long-term lease.

From historic riches to future discoveries: The Warroo Copper-Gold Project
In the realm of mineral exploration, few opportunities are as enticing as those presented by the Silverwood Copper-Gold Project. Located just 15 kilometers south of Warwick in Queensland, this project is a significant asset of QMines. Encompassing a vast 234 square kilometers of exploration area, the Silverwood Project boasts immense potential for Volcanic-Hosted Massive Sulphide (VHMS) and Mississippi Valley-type deposits, hosting substantial quantities of zinc, copper, gold, silver, and lead.
Situated within the Calliope Island Arc, the Silverwood Project has gained recognition for its remarkable gold deposits, including the famed Mount Morgan gold mine, which has yielded over 8 million ounces of gold and 400,000 tonnes of copper. Benefitting from a complex geological structure, the Silverwood region provides a fertile ground for further exploration and potential discoveries.
Among the key highlights of the Silverwood Base Metals Project is its previous exploration by the esteemed Geological Survey of Queensland (GSQ). As a result, the project boasts an initial exploration target of 0.8-1.0 million tonnes at impressive grades of 3.2-3.7% zinc, 0.3-0.5% copper, 15-25 grams per tonne silver, and 0.3-0.5% lead. Promisingly, drill results have revealed the presence of copper grades reaching as high as 3%.
Building on the significant base metal mineralization discovered at Grieves Quarry, QMines is directing its exploration initiatives towards identifying potential gold mineralization in calcareous or carbonate sedimentary rocks while continuing to target base metals at the Silverwood project.
Andrew Sparke, a renowned industry expert, has expressed his optimism regarding the Silverwood Copper-Gold Project. He believes that the region's geological complexity and the previous exploration efforts conducted by the Geological Survey of Queensland have laid a strong foundation for further exploration and potential discoveries. Sparke further emphasizes that the presence of high-grade copper and the project's proximity to significant gold deposits bode well for future prospects.
In addition to the Silverwood Project, Sparke also highlights the Warroo Copper-Gold Project, situated 50 kilometers west of Stanthorpe. Spanning an expansive 216 square kilometers, this project encompasses the historical Warroo copper-gold mine, which has yielded 13,982 ounces of gold, 21 tonnes of copper, and 901 ounces of silver from a depth of 40 meters between 1909 and 1992.
Denaro's 1992 assessment of the Warroo mine identified granitoid-related mesothermal vein deposits with exceptional gold grades, making them a primary target for mineral exploration. The Warroo Project is home to eight high-grade small-scale historic mines and deposits, underscoring its rich potential.
Of particular significance is the best drill hole result obtained from the Warroo Project, which revealed an impressive 8 meters at 13.46 grams per tonne gold. This remarkable finding further highlights the substantial exploration potential of the project.
QMines, in its pursuit of unlocking the full potential of the Warroo Project, plans to undertake a comprehensive data compilation exercise. This exercise aims to develop a digital summary map that will facilitate the evaluation of anomalous areas identified by past explorers, thereby aiding further exploration efforts. The company's proposed drilling of the primary sulphide zone in and around the Warroo mine presents numerous gold and copper targets for follow-up exploration.
With Andrew Sparke and QMines at the helm, the Silverwood Copper-Gold Project and the Warroo Copper-Gold Project are poised to make significant strides in uncovering substantial mineral reserves. The combination of extensive geological potential, past exploration efforts, and the dedication of industry experts herald a promising future for these projects, leaving investors and stakeholders eagerly awaiting the next groundbreaking discoveries.

I told my English coworker about a really great long weekend I had in the country town of Stanthorpe, doing wine tasting tours and eating local cheeses and jams and going to craft and antiques shops and stuff, and said "it was really relaxing, I should do a long weekend like that more often, you kind of forget it's only like a three and a half hour drive away" and she thought that was really funny
In their defence, a lot of it is sand.

My name is Emma Lara Sawazky and I was born on the 1st of April 1977 as Marilyn Jane Saw. I changed my name through deed poll on the 8th of July 2008. I was born in Geelong, Victoria, Australia and moved to Queensland in January 1992. I didn't had an easy life I been through so much in my past years. When I was a kid I was sexual assault by a man who lured me near a kindergarten. And I was sexually abuse by my late uncle Dieter. I keep that from my nan Ida Sawazky many years ago. I am trying to moved past that over the decades but it's still in my head you can't forget about it. When I drop out of school in February 1994, I used to hang around town. In August 1994 I was sexually assaulted by a man I met in town who was a few years older than me. Than months later I went to court in November 1994 to face the who did this to me that was very dramatic experience for me. The following year I was sexually assaulted in 1995. I never reported it back then. I have been assaulted numerous times over the years. In February 2008 I met a guy name Salim he was so handsome and good looking a very nice guy we hit it off straight away. He asked me to be his girlfriend months later in April 2008 I turn him down he would of been the right guy for me. I have been hurt by some other guy in February 2003 then in December 2003 he was after me again didn't take no for an answer. In 2003 a guy I met at the Central pub he had his hands down my underwear at the bar. Luckily we didn't got kicked out. Over the years I had guys that touched me as I got older since I left Stanthorpe in September 2014 I stayed away from men since. In 2001 age 24 this guy happens to be my neighbour he used to harrass me and banging on my windows late at night yelling and abuse me it took me years to get over it I thought he was going to murder me I had my doors locked at all times. By September 2001 I had difficulty breathing because of everything that happened in my life I decided to moved out of my apartment and moved to Stanthorpe in November 2001.
