My spouse found this movie online yesterday and showed it to me this morning. It’s a very entertaining screwball noir. I looked it up afterwards and it seems the reason it’s not better-known is that it was scheduled for release September 2001, and, well, the third act involves the two dimmest of the crooks taking over a passenger airplane…
It got shelved for a year and was finally released sometime in 2002 with as little fanfare as possible.

The Venture Bros. #44: "Perchance to Dean" | November 2, 2009 - 12:00AM | S04E03
This episode sorta drove home how much better this season is. I went into this one thinking of it as a non-highlight; sort of a middling episode of the season. Jackson Publick, the writer of the episode, says of it: “I don’t think this is anybody’s favorite”. That’s an accurate statement, probably. Hell, by some token it’s inessential; I don’t think any of the other big lore-heavy episodes of the show reference this one in any significant way. But here’s the thing: this is still a very good episode that has GREAT moments.
This one starts with a flashback, where Brock is new to the Venture compound, wearing a baja. He doesn’t speak, so Patrick Warburton doesn’t get a cool hundo for this one. The clone slugs are all babies at this point in the chronology, and Doc just spotted a deformed Dean. He flushes the dud, who, we soon find out, somehow survives and has become a full-grown young man in current-day time.
Dud Dean has been digging up dead Deans and making a nasty skin suit out of them, so he can become the real deal. This dude is all messed up. He also hallucinates a ghostly Doc Venture who tells him to be bad and murder the real Dean on account of him running out of shallow-grave Dean clones to harvest.
Meanwhile, the rift between Dean and Hank is getting worse; Doc is trying jump-start Dean’s future of super science by introducing him to the ultimate super-science muse: progressive rock. Dean takes to it and feels inspired, and immediately sets to work on coming up with a cure to reverse baldness, as he seems to be destined to lose his hair like his father.
Hank, meanwhile, is grounded for defiantly sass-pissing on his father’s bathroom floor. He's being forced to do chores while he nurses his case of sour grapes. Dermott, his hoodlum friend (strongly implied to be Brock’s illegitimate son in season three), sneaks into the compound, calling their security a “joke”. It just so happens that Doc Venture and Sgt. Hatred have set to work on beefing up their security system by placing combustible replicas of Rusty everywhere.
A little bit of sitcom-style mistaken identity with a Dean corpse (being dug up and stolen by the mutant Dean clone) leads Hank to believe that he killed his own brother while joyriding in his dad’s car. Dean thinks his science experiment somehow grew his mutant, who is now chasing him around the compound. Local police are descending on the compound after some complaints. Then, spoiler alert, mutant dean explodes while hallucinating a moment with one of the Rusty land-mines. It’s pretty wonderful and cinematic, and has a great abrupt ending.
Reggie Watts is in this one as a package delivery driver for an unspecified driver. He does a great job, and I forgot that was him until I was reminded that it was in the commentary track for the episode. Hank racistly assumes he has the shining (like Scatman Crothers in Stanley Kubrick’s motion picture of Steven King’s The Shining), and in a pretty funny reversal we find out he actually might. He calls the local sheriff sensing that something bad is going to happen there.
It sounds like in the writing process that the two main goals of this episode was to make use of a huge cache of prog rock jokes Jackson and Doc had been riffing on. Even though it’s still a fairly significant part of the episode, it was still reduced more than they thought it would be. This was also based on the idea of how much it must suck to live near the Venture compound, and have neighbors/civilians get involved.
The deformed clone plot-line is probably not terribly popular with fans. It IS fairly hard to believe that a clone slug could, as a baby, survive in the walls or whatever into adulthood. If The Venture Bros. has anything close to having a "Principal and the Pauper" episode, it’s probably this; in that the events of it don’t really get referred to much, if at all. Deformed Dean's attic hideout does become Goth Dean's new bedroom in later seasons, but I'd say that's less about poetic rhyming and more like an Easter egg. I say this one's still better than a lot of season three episodes, and there’s a lot of fun to be had if you want it. Hey, guys? Who doesn’t like to have some fun? :)
MAIL BAG:
Hey man, season 3 of Jellystone, a cartoon on Max with Hanna-Barbera characters, came out last week and ep 14 features Space Ghost voiced by George Lowe and Brak voiced by Andy Merrill. Zorak and Moltar are featured too, but new voices. It’s your duty to tell the world and thank you for your service!
You know something? These clips popped up on YouTube and--I guess you could pretentiously call this "the YouTube effect" if you want--I assumed that they were old and I just never saw them until now.
I liked the clips I saw just fine, and I respect and support the Jellystone show without ever actually on-purpose watching it. I guess I don't mind them recasting Zorak and Moltar in this context, but I'd be disappointed if they tried to revive Coast to Coast with the new actors. Space Ghost Coast to Coast should just stay dead, at least in an audio/visual form. That is my take and it is precious and a gift to the entire world.

Guilty Pleasure #27

BIG TROUBLE
Dir. BARRY SONNENFELD; Wri. ROBERT RAMSEY & MATTHEW STONE; Music. JAMES NEWTON HOWARD; Starring. TIM ALLEN, RENE RUSSO, STANLEY TUCCI, BEN FOSTER, ZOOEY DESCHANEL, TOM SIZEMORE, JOHNNY KNOXVILLE, DENNIS FARINA, JACK KEHLER, JANEANE GAROFALO, PATRICK WARBURTON, HEAVY D, OMAR EPPS, JASON LEE, SOFIA VERGARA, MICHAEL McSHANE, D.J. QUALLS, ANDY RICHTER; R.T. 85 mins; 2002, USA
WHAT IT’S ABOUT: Adapted from the novel by Dave Barry, this screwball comedy brings a disparate group of Miami citizens – struggling advertising agent Eliot Arnold (Allen) and his deeply disappointed teenage son Matt (Foster), rich embezzler Arthur Herk (Tucci), his bored wife Anna (Russo) and her acerbic teenage daughter Jenny (Deschanel), Snake (Sizemore) and Eddie (Knoxville), two deadbeat ex-cons with seriously low IQs, smart police officer Romero (Garofalo) and her dim-bulb partner officer Kramitz (Warburton), Henry (Farina) and Leonard (Kehler), two hitmen hired to kill Arthur, the Herk household’s live-in housemaid Nina (Vergara) and Puggy (Lee), the laid-back homeless man she falls in love with – together through a convoluted series of events revolving around the hunt for a stolen Russian suitcase nuke.
WHY IT’S GUILTY: Blockbuster comedy master director Barry Sonnenfeld tried to land another smash hit with this back in 2001, only for it to be yanked from its original September 21st release date in the wake of 9-11 when Touchstone Pictures feared the vague similarities in the film’s plotline could be construed as inappropriate and disrespectful, and it was pushed back to the following April for a seriously lacklustre belated release.  Needless to say it full-on BOMBED, but I wonder if its fortunes would have been improved if circumstances had been different – given its HUGE cast of characters with their various stories the plot gets pretty tangled at times, the tone proving inconsistent while some of the jokes fall a flat, leading to a clunky, uneven viewing experience, especially in the cluttered, overblown finale. It’s certainly a dud compared to his best work, such as Men In Black, Get Shorty and both of The Addams Family movies.
WHY IT’S A PLEASURE: That being said, it’s definitely not a turd – there are times when this movie really DOES work, and there are plenty of them too.  Sure, it’s uneven, but when it’s on-form it’s TONS OF FUN because, let’s face it, even when he’s misfiring Sonnenfeld still has a seriously sure hand for cinematic comedy. It also helps he’s well served by a consistently excellent ensemble cast – Tim Allen can do this kind of stuff with his eyes closed, bringing easy loser charm to the role of the story’s decidedly unlikely hero, while Rene Russo brings more than a touch of class to proceedings, and there’s winning support from then relative unknown talents who have since gone on to MASSIVE success, particularly New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, award-troubling method powerhouse Ben Foster (The Program and Leave No Trace to name but a few) and Jackass star Johnny Knoxville in one of his earliest film roles (his chemistry with a frequently hilarious Tom Sizemore is STRONG). The real standouts turns, however, come from a fantastically game Stanley Tucci, thoroughly loathsome as one of the most underrated arseholes in movie history, Jason Lee, delivering a wonderfully understated, Zen-calm performance as phenomenally unflappable Puggy, and the thoroughly ingenious pairing of small/big-screen comedy stars Janeane Garofalo and Patrick Warburton as the film’s bright-and-dim cop duo. Sonnenfeld keeps the humour light and breezy, frequently spinning off into some heavy-duty slapstick territory, and while they don’t always land there are some absolutely corking jokes in here (my personal favourite involves a psychoactive toad that I really don’t want to spoil the surprise of, or the hilarious payoff).  Not particularly sophisticated, then, but good enough to entertain easily amused comedy fans for an hour and a half – so yeah, it may be a dud compared to Sonnenfeld’s hits, but you can’t deny it’s better than Men In Black 2 (and a VAST improvement on Wild Wild West) …

Patrick Warburton reprises his role as David Puddy to support the team ahead of their home playoff game, complete with face and chest paint.
I know, he promised Elaine no more face painting. But, you gotta let them know you're out there; this is the playoffs!

One of my favourite anecdotes about Henry VII’s journey before his victory at the Battle of Bosworth is the time that he and his army tried to enter England through Shrewsbury but found all the portcullises down. The town’s bailiffs Thomas Mitton and Roger Knight refused to allow Henry’s army to march through the town so Henry and his troops had to retreat some five miles northwest to try to cross the River Severn from another point.
This must have been deeply frustrating for Henry and his soldiers, considering that they had just marched through the mountains of Snowdonia, some of the most difficult and rocky terrains in Wales. On that day (17 August) they had pressed on from Long Mountain (Mynydd Digoll), covering eleven miles to reach Shrewsbury only to find the town’s gates closed.
The incident might also have been embarrassing for Henry as the town’s bailiffs did not recognise his claim to the crown. Instead, Thomas Mitton is recorded to have said that he “knew no king but King Richard to whom he was sworn, whose life tenants he and his fellows were, and before he [Henry] should enter there he should go over his belly”.
Henry tried to send messengers to negotiate with Mitton on the next day, assuring him that he and his men would march through the town quietly and without causing any damage or injury to anyone and would respect the oaths of loyalty sworn to Richard III. We don’t know if the town’s bailiffs were persuaded by those promises, but they certainly agreed to negotiate with the man sent by Sir William Stanley, Rowland Warburton, whom tradition has as delivering his message by wrapping it around a stone and launching it over the town’s walls by means of a sling.
The town decided to surrender, but a local chronicler wrote that Thomas Mitton still insisted on maintaining his oath sworn to Richard III. Mitton had declared that Henry Tudor would only ever enter the city by passing over his belly, so, as Henry and his men entered through the town’s gate, Mitton “lay along the ground with his belly upwards and so the said Earl, Henry, stepped over him and marched forwards”.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #138 - Mr. Peabody and Sherman
Tumblr media
Spoilers below
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: Yes.
Was it a movie I saw since August 22nd, 2009: Yes, #284.
Format: Blu-ray
Shoutout to @im-this-kind-of-girl, who’s blog I found while looking for GIFs to use in this recap and apparently loves this film. If you chose to read this I hope you like it as much as I like your GIFs. You’re tagged about a hundred times in this because I credit each of your GIFs to you.
1) The Dreamworks deal that allows them to make the “Voltron” TV show on Netflix right now also gives them ownership of the Mr. Peabody & Sherman brand. They had licensed the characters to make the film but by the time of release had bought them (and others) outright.
Tumblr media
2) If there are any fans of the original “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” cartoons I’m going to let you know now: I never watched those so they bear no weight on my attitudes towards this film.
3) Ty Burrell as Mr. Peabody.
Tumblr media
Burrell is honestly the perfect voice for the role. Robert Downey Jr. was attached for a time but I don’t think anyone could have topped Burrell’s work. The best voice over work is marked by forgetting that you’re listening to an actor and just accepting they are the character, and every time I think of the fact that this is Ty Burrell and not just Mr. Peabody I am in awe. He has the most perfect balance of humor, intellect, and heart which makes the character what he is. He comes off as funny and like a genuine dad (even playing the dad jokes/puns straight). Burrell is able to make the character in this film and I am so grateful that he was cast.
4) The prologue for the film works quite well. It sets the fun and whimsical tone as well as a sense of humor. We also get an early sense of Peabody and Sherman as characters. Peabody as narrator is most easily established, but the filmmakers are able to make Sherman feel like a genuine kid. Not an annoying child, not an adult acting like a child, but a real kid. All in the opening minutes too.
Tumblr media
5) I find it interesting how the film calls out the story of George Washington cutting down a cherry tree as not being true, but still claims Marie Antoinette said, “Let them eat cake!” when (if I’m not mistaken) the historical accuracy of that is at best questionable.
6) I really like this film’s sense of humor.
Mr. Peabody: “...the people of France were exceedingly poor.”
[Cut to two peasants lying in the streets]
Peasant 1: “Got any bread?”
Peasant 2: “NO! I’m exceedingly poor!”
7) Right before the film’s release, I had heard that it was going to be rated PG-13 but an appeal from the filmmakers made it PG. I was confused by this at first, but after seeing the movie I understand why. Here are a few reasons for my understanding:
Mr. Peabody is almost killed by a guillotine
We see paintings which depict mummification in vivid detail
Sherman fights in the Trojan war; it’s not as watered down as you may expect
Sherman and Peabody both bite people at two different points
I’m not saying it’s enough to warrant the film ACTUALLY being rated PG-13, but I can understand why it may have almost been.
8) The early sewer chase through Paris is a good showcase of the film’s imaginative action which is to come. It is both captivating to the eye but definitely uses the benefits of animation. I don’t know that something like lighting the methane gas in a sewer to be projected to safety would work as well in live action as it does in animation.
9) Penny (the female lead and trio to Peabody’s/Sherman’s adventure) is never really given an explanation as to why she is such a MASSIVE bully. Like, she’s really awful. She mocks Sherman for being smart, calls him a dog, holds him in a chokehold, she’s downright cruel! And while she develops overtime in a way which is organic and believable, her initial characterization is never explained.
Tumblr media
Ariel Winter does quite well in the role though.
10) Ugh, this crap.
Principal [to Mr. Peabody]: “Sherman got in a fight today!”
No, he was bullied and had to defend himself AFTER BEING PUT IN A CHOKEHOLD!
Ms. Grunion: “It’s normal for children to tease...”
Tumblr media
(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)
I know Grunion is an antagonist and this situation is used to set up conflict in the show, but it paints the unfortunately real picture of how there are adults and people in power who normalize bullying. And it needs to stop in the real world.
11) Allison Janney is a treat as Ms. Grunion though. Janney is one of my favorite actresses ever and has shown her skilled voice over chops in projects like Finding Nemo. Ms. Grunion isn’t in the movie much but when she is (very much like Ty Burrell does as Peabody) Janney is stellar in the role.
Tumblr media
12) One of the nice thing this film does that I don’t think the television show did (and again, I never watched, so I don’t know for sure) is examine the father/son relationship between Mr. Peabody and Sherman. The flashback scene where Mr. Peabody is making his case for why he should adopt Sherman in front of a judge (how no one wanted him as a child either) is particularly telling of their connection. It is a nice relationship to carry us throughout the film.
Tumblr media
13) I always felt like this was as much a nod to The Prince of Egypt as it was to history in Mr. Peabody’s flashbacks.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @somehow-you-will)
14) Stephen Colbert and Leslie Mann playing characters who like...almost exactly like Stephen Colbert and Leslie Mann.
Tumblr media
15) One of my favorite character actors around is Steve Valentine, most memorable for his leading turn in “I’m in the Band” on Disney XD, his voice over work in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, and his performance in Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk. He is in this film as Ay, royal vizier to King Tut.
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @im-this-kind-of-girl)
Tumblr media
16) There are so. Many. PUNS!!!!!
Mr. Peabody [after Sherman knocks off a mummy arm]: “That’s disarming.”
I’m just sharing the one because I don’t want to overload you guys but damn there’s a lot!
17) So...why does Sherman like Penny? She has literally done nothing but cruel and condescending to him this entire film. She humiliated him in front of school, she’s shoved him off, pushed him around, called him a liar multiple times, been a total jerk, and he...likes her?
Tumblr media
18) It is important to remember that Sherman is smart. Not Mr. Peabody smart, but smart. When in Egypt, he gets like 99% of the booby trapped floor puzzle right when he was only sort of paying attention to Mr. Peabody before. That shows brains.
19) I really like the humor in this film. I know I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again.
Mr. Peabody, Masquerading as Anubis [after Ay says the sun god Ra demand Penny’s marriage to Tut]: “That’s so funny. I was talking to the sun god Ra just the other day...”
20) Stanley Tucci is fun as Da Vinci. Stanley Tucci is one of the most consistently talented actors around. He ALWAYS devotes himself to a role fully and is often times the best parts in a movie. That same passion shows in his voice over work here. I really enjoy it.
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @im-this-kind-of-girl)
21) Have I mentioned how I like the humor of this film before?
DaVinci [about how children are not machines]: “I tried to build one once. It WAS creepy.”
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @im-this-kind-of-girl)
22) The way the time stream is animated during the time travel sequences (bet seen when the trio almost is trapped by a black hole) is very well done. It is a fun and interesting way of visually showing the concept of time as the group hurdles through it.
Tumblr media
This is just concept art above but the final representation is pretty close to this.
23) The conflict between Peabody and Sherman is at its highest when Sherman exclaims this to his adoptive father:
Sherman: “I said I’m not a dog!”
It shows a real conflict between the two. Peabody has become concerned about being able to raise Sherman right recently, and Sherman has been questioning who he is outside of his relationship with his dad. It will be resolved wonderfully by the film’s end, however.
24) I’m a sucker for Patrick Warburton in anything, but Patrick Warburton in a voice over role is particularly wonderful.
Tumblr media
25.1) Honestly the entire Trojan horse scene has some of my favorite jokes in the film. To start with, the fact that they made Odysseus - the great heroic character in the Odyssey - into this little pimple of a guy:
Tumblr media
And I know you’re not supposed to judge people by appearances, but in animation characters are designed the way they are for a reason and the reason here is to play against the standard idea of Odysseus.
25.2) Not to mention the fact that Peabody and Penny get into the Trojan horse LITERALLY by using their own Trojan horse.
25.3) And then, my favorite joke of the entire film, comes at the end of this mini monologue:
Agamemnon: FYI, a lot of heroes have father issues. My old man is a minotaur. Half man, half bull, all judgement. Ajax, here, strongest guy in the world, but his father never accepted that his real dream was to sing.
Ajax: [in falsetto] I wanted to be in the Greek Chorus.
Agamemnon: Uh, yeah, and don't even get me started about Oedipus. Let's just say you do *not* want to be at his house over the holidays. It's awkward.
Tumblr media
Honorable mention to the “Greek Chorus” joke too.
26) My aching heart.
Sherman [shouting over a cliff, after he thinks Mr. Peabody died]: “Mr. Peabody! Mr. Peabody! [Beat] Dad!”
Tumblr media
(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)
27) Probably could’ve worded this better (although it was probably written for that very reason).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
28) STOP! NORMALIZING! BULLYING! GRUNION!
Ms. Grunion [after Penny apologize for being a bully]: “You have nothing to apologize for Penny...”
Tumblr media
(GIF source unknown [if this is your GIF please let me know].)
29) The climax for this film is SO much fun! I just love it to pieces! It is fast paced, has some great humor in bringing all the historical figures to the present, and brings together every character we’ve met so far in a fast paced and wild ride. It is just SO much fun watching literally EVERYONE chase after Mr. Peabody and Sherman.
30) Mel Brooks has probably three lines total as Einstein but it’s totally worth it.
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @im-this-kind-of-girl)
31) This. Freaking. Movie.
youtube
I lied before. This is probably my favorite joke in the film.
32) Remember how I said the conflict between Sherman and Peabody is resolved wonderfully?
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @im-this-kind-of-girl)
It shows Sherman making peace with who he is and supporting his dad, and convincing everyone else to do the same as they all exclaim, “I’m a dog too!” It’s surprisingly sweet and moving, perhaps one of my favorite parts of the film.
33) I will say, the first time I saw this film I thought to myself, “I’m Spartacus.” And then, of course, who should show up...
Tumblr media
34) This. Freaking. Movie.
George Washington: “I hereby award Mr. Peabody a presidential pardon.”
Abe Lincoln: “Me too.”
Tumblr media
(GIF originally posted by @im-this-kind-of-girl)
Bill Clinton is still alive, which begs the question: is he there as a historical figure or was he just in New York and wanted to see what was going on? Since it’s Bill Clinton it’s probably the latter.
35) This is sweet. A nice emotional conclusion as Mr. Peabody couldn’t say, “I love you,” too Sherman earlier in the film.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(GIFs originally posted by @im-this-kind-of-girl)
Mr. Peabody and Sherman is a wonderful film that unfortunately was not exactly Dreamworks most watched movie at the time of release. It has a unique and fun sense of humor, fun animation, but also an emotional arc and characters you truly get invested in. The voice acting is very on point, and it is just a fun ride. If you’re a fan of animation, Dreamworks, or just moviemaking in general and haven’t seen this film, I highly recommend it.

A couple weeks ago I went to the Rhode Island Comic Con in Providence, and it was awesome! Above are the photo ops, selfies, and autographs I managed to get while there.
Photo op and autographs from George Takei and Nichelle Nichols (Sulu and Uhura) of Star Trek. Takei and Nichols were sweet, and Takei loved how I was dressed.
Photo op/autograph with Kate Mulgrew (Captain Janeway) of Star Trek: Voyager.
Photo op with Catherine Tate, John Barrowman, and Alex Kingston (Donna Noble, Captain Jack Harkness, River Song) of Doctor Who, with autographs from Kingston and Barrowman. They were all pretty cool and loved my Doctor Who tie, as you can see, and Kingston and Barrowman were very nice.
Selfies and autographs with Leslie David Baker and Brian Baumgartner (Stanley and Kevin) of The Office.
Selfie/autograph with Daphne Zuniga (Princess Vespa) of Spaceballs.
There were a few other people there I would have liked to meet, like William Shatner, the entire family from the original Vacation movie, Patrick Warburton, and more, but I didn’t get the chance. Also, it was expensive.

When a player makes such a change
Get daily updates directly to your inbox+ SubscribeThank you for subscribing! The Cheaper Insurance Direct Stadium pitch couldn't survive what seemed like two weeks of continual rain, at ten o'clock on Saturday morning everyone's fears were confirmed, the game was off.Whilst extremely disappointing the postponement did bring with it one potential positive the squad would have a longer break than Rangers for Tuesday evening's game. After having the game re arranged to suit them the decision could end up backfiring as Mark Warburton's side will now play twice in four days.Their full time fitness and quality of squad will obviously still give them a massive advantage, but it gives me the slightest glimmer of hope heading to Ibrox on Tuesday.Stevie Aitken's team selection for the game will be fascinating, especially after substitutes having such a massive impact during last week's remarkable' draw with Raith nfl jerseys.Willie Gibson, Kevin Cawley and Garry Fleming all contributed enough to deserve a start, it may seem naive to play three extremely attack minded players, but I think it's the best way to hurt Rangers. On Saturday their game with Ian Murray's St Mirren was live on BBC Alba, as was so often the case last season Murray and Saints sat, camped in their own half. They barely contributed anything going forward apart from a Stuart Carswell effort that hit the bar and in the end were comfortably defeated by four goals to nil.The way we set up for the encounter early in the season was perfect, sturdy and robust defensively and then attack with pace on the break. It very nearly worked as well, only a defensive mistake and a moment of quality from Martyn Waghorn came between Sons and a famous result.Although Tuesday's game is the glamorous one, next Saturday's is the far more important one. The eighth annual Rhode Island Comic Con took place November 1-3 at the Rhode Island Convention Center and the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, RI. With the new layout implemented the previous year proving to be successful, the show ran like a well-oiled machine. When not enamored by the countless vendors, I spent a good deal of the weekend in the panel rooms listening to anecdotes from a host of beloved actors.
The first panel of the weekend was with The Office's Brian Baumgartner (who played Kevin) and Leslie David Baker (who played Stanley). After being forced to turn away dozens of fans from last year's The Office Q&A with other cast members, the convention smartly booked the bigger panel room this time around. They discussed the show's longevity and the possibility of a revival. "It will never be the same," Baker stated, but they remain open to the idea; he encouraged fans to write to NBC if they want to see it. Many laughs were had, with Baumgartner occasionally slipping into his character’s voice, in addition to dropping not one but two "That's what she said!" jokes.

Richard Dreyfuss' panel immediately followed. The Academy Award-winning actor opened by saying that he has answered every Jaws question over the years, so if you ask one he hasn't heard he'll give you $10 - but if you ask one he has heard you owe him $10. He promised more than just funny stories from film sets - although that's what most people wanted to hear. More than half of the 45-minute discussion was dedicated to the absence of civics in today's educational system, a subject on which Dreyfuss wrote a soon-to-be-published book. He did answer a few film-related questions, but the moderator - a local podcast host - did not help the situation.
A Q&A with Freddy Krueger himself, Robert Englund, was a fun way to cap off the first day. A born storyteller with an encyclopedic knowledge of film, his panels are always fascinating. He discussed his work in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise at length, citing Part 4 has his favorite performance, New Nightmare as his favorite to make, and Tina from Part 1 as his favorite death scene. With questions culled from Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon, Galaxy of Terror, and Never Too Young to Die, Englund called it his most esoteric panel. He concluded by telling the audience about True Terror, a new Travel Channel series he's hosting that's set to premiere in February.

I've never watched a single episode of Star Trek, but I had a hunch that William Shatner's panel would be wildly entertaining - and he proved me right. With no need for a moderator, he began by telling the captive audience about The Ride, an upcoming documentary following his eight-day motorcycle journey from Chicago to Los Angeles, and his new blues album that's due out next year. Surprisingly, there were no Star Trek questions; topics of conversation ranged from Judgment at Nuremberg and Better Late Than Never to working with whales and his likeness being used for Michael Myers' mask in Halloween.
The godfather of the modern action figure, Marty Abrams, shared the fascinating story of his Mego Corporation. While Abrams remained diplomatic, Mego consultant Paul Clarke asserted their side of the infamous Star Wars story. Abrams did not pass on the Star Wars license; he was in Japan working on Micronauts and never had a meeting. In a "perfect storm," Kenner happened to be located in the same building and signed the deal before Abrams returned. He estimates it cost him billions of dollars. It was a riveting companion to the Kenner-centric Star Wars episode of Netflix's The Toys That Made Us. Abrams also revealed that a Micronauts TV series and movie are in development. The recently relaunched Mego is looking into more contemporary packaging and more play value to appeal to the younger demographic. They're also continuing to expand their licenses, with Star Trek: The Next Generation coming soon.

I attempted to attend the Stranger Things panel on Saturday evening, but my lack of a mysterious wristband - about which no advanced information was issued - prevented me from doing so. It was a blessing in disguise, however, as I used the spare time to score a front-row seat for Elijah Wood's Q&A. Despite being one of the headlining guests, Wood was in the smaller panel room, which quickly reached capacity.
Wood shared several anecdotes about The Lord of the Rings, confirming that the fellowship actors have matching tattoos and disclosing that he has never read J.R.R. Tolkien's source material. ("I lived the books," he quipped.) He revealed that although Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is likely done for good, there have been talks of an animated continuation. He also expressed his desire to direct, stating that he would gravitate toward genre films. He cited The Thing, The Exorcist, Rosemary's Baby, Don't Look Now, Carrie, and The Innocents as his favorite horror films, with Goodnight Mommy, Hereditary, and The Witch being recent favorites. He even rushed off stage to hug a Canadian fan who drove over four hours to see Mandy - produced by Wood's SpectreVision - on the big screen.

Sunday morning kicked off with Christina Ricci's panel. A self-described "very different child," she hypothesized that being raised in a chaotic atmosphere led her to darker roles as a child actress, but playing those parts also impacted her. She cites Buffalo 66 and The Ice Storm among the roles she's most proud of. She loved the technical aspects of working on The Addams Family and considers herself particularly lucky to have worked with Raul Julia. When asked about playing Morticia in an Addams Family reboot, she said she'd be happy to, but it would make more sense for her to play an adult Wednesday. She also discussed making her debut at the age of 7 in a Saturday Night Live skit, an embarrassing experience filming Casper’s kissing scene in the early days of CGI, smoking her first cigarette with Winona Ryder on the set of Mermaids, and understanding the importance of Lizzie Borden upon appearing in New England that weekend.
Like his Star Trek co-star, George Takei was not accompanied by a moderator. He began by speaking about They Called Us Enemy, his new graphic novel about being imprisoned in a Japanese-American interment camp at the age of 5 following the bombing of Pearl Harbor, despite the fact that he and his family were born in America. The subject matter sadly remains relevant, but it was heartening to hear his resolve as well as the audience's reaction. The actor/activist also publicly revealed his support of Pete Buttigieg for the Democratic presidential nomination. He discussed how Star Trek has "lived long and prospered" for over 50 years before proudly speaking about his recent work on AMC's The Terror: Infamy, on which he served as a consultant in addition to acting. While answering fan questions, he shared a humorous anecdote about doing the Howard Stern show for the first time without knowing what he was getting into.

Rhode Island Comic Con marked comedy legend Chevy Chase's first convention, leading a Vacation family reunion, and saw the final public appearance of Sesame Street's former Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, Caroll Spinney. In addition to those mentioned, the guest list included Gaten Matarazzo (Stranger Things), Benedict Wong (Doctor Strange), Evanna Lynch (Harry Potter), Alfie Allen (Game of Thrones), Anthony Michael Hall (The Breakfast Club), Patrick Warburton (The Tick), Alex Kingston (Doctor Who), Robert Patrick (Terminator 2), Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead), Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk), Jaleel White (Family Matters), Richard Brake (Three from Hell), professional wrestling legend Mick Foley, and dozens more.
Beyond the impressive line-up of celebrity guests and a wide variety of vendors, Rhode Island Comic Con also featured comic book creators ranging from big names to indie up-and-comers, exclusive merchandise, after parties, kids activities, geek speed dating, and more. Cosplayers are always a highlight, so I was eager to catch the costume contest on Sunday afternoon. A great Buzz Lightyear - who nailed not only the costume but also the mannerisms - took home the grand prize, bringing the weekend’s fun to infinity and beyond.
