Tiger gets to play with Patrick Reed again

Tiger gets a shot at contention on the weekend at Muirfield Village.

Tiger Woods has made another cut on the PGA Tour. That may not seem like much, but we started the season just four months ago with made cuts as the bar. He grinded to make the cut in his first official start at Torrey Pines, and we considered it a success when he did on the number. Those were the parameters and expectations.

The bar has been raised less than halfway into this amazing comeback season but it’s still a success to have him playing the weekend at the Memorial Tournament again. It’s his first start here in three years and now he’ll get a late-morning tee time alongside Masters winner Patrick Reed (11:20 a.m. ET). Woods has played well enough to have a late weekend tee time, but his putting has been hot garbage. His Friday round really could have been something like a 62 or 63 given the way he was striping the ball but the flatstick let him down time and again in almost incomprehensible ways.

SG total 3.7 with SG putting -3.6. Coulda, woulda, shoulda, been like 3-5 strokes better.

So there are signs of competitiveness and contention there again, despite the horrendous putting. As we saw at Sawgrass, that can come and go in a hurry and if he starts rolling them in for a stretch, a move into the top 10 is likely given the way he’s striking the ball.

Reed idolizes Tiger and has a bit of an obsession with the Cat, wearing the trademark red and black on Sundays as some sort of homage. Now he’s with Nike this year too so it presents a pretty odd dichotomy if they play around each other in a final round — the masses were furious at the Valspar Championship when they discovered this Reed tradition most of the golf diehards already knew about prior.

The two, however, have a good relationship from time spent playing together and with Tiger as a captain of the Ryder and Presidents Cup teams. It’s a comfortable pairing for Woods and the two should make it around Muirfield Village in about four hours if there are no weather delays.

I’m rather surprised with some of the placements and inclusions. This is probably because of new Emmy rules regarding the Limited Series category but it was expected Taboo was going to be submitted there until Tom and Chips Hardy opted for a sequel. This mainly affects the Outstanding Lead Actor race where it was believed to be a showdown between Tom Hardy and Riz Ahmed for The Night Of. Now it looks like one between Ahmed and Ewan McGregor of Fargo.

Interesting that AHS: Roanoke isn’t submitting anyone in the leads especially since a good argument can be made Adina Porter was the lead of the season. However FX looks to be focusing on Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon of Feud as the leads in the same category. This is understandable as HBO is fielding Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon in Big Little Lies.

I’m happily surprised Dominic Burgess’ sublime take on Victor Buono in Feud is being submitted and without Jonathan Pryce from Taboo in the Limited category he may just may sneak into the final tally.

   NASHVILLE, Tenn. (August 8, 2018) - The Gospel Music Association (GMA) announced today the nominees for the 49th Annual GMA Dove Awards, revealed exclusively on Facebook Live with the help of Travis Greene and Francesca Battistelli. The awards show will take place on Tuesday, October 16, at Lipscomb University. Trinity Broadcasting Network (TBN) will exclusively air the show on Sunday, October 21. Voting for the final winners will run August 20 through August 27.

          Tauren Wells leads artist nominations with seven, followed by Zach Williams with six and Cory Asbury, Tasha Cobbs Leonard and TobyMac with five nods each. Tiger heads out early on Thursday at Muirfield

Tiger returns to the PGA Tour in a state and at a tournament where he’s piled up wins.

After a two-week break, Tiger Woods returns to the PGA Tour on Thursday morning at the Memorial Tournament. It’s a friendly venue for Woods and one of those places he’s owned over the course of his career. He’s not owned it to the extent he’s owned Bay Hill or Torrey Pines or Firestone, but he still counts five career victories at Jack Nicklaus’ event. That’s a career many pros would happily take.

Woods skipped the Texas two-step, that annual back-to-back series in the Dallas-Fort Worth area following The Players. No one expected him to add those to his schedule but the Memorial was always a lock. It’s the only event he plays, usually, between The Players and the U.S. Open. So this is likely all we’ll see of Tiger before he tees it up at Shinnecock Hills in a few weeks.

Tiger will start his week in Columbus bright and early on Thursday, going off alongside Justin Rose and Jason Dufner. It’s a comfortable pairing for Woods, who plays with Duf down in South Florida and during several practice rounds. Rosie is also an easy playing partner and has been around the block with Woods before too. They tee off at 8:26 a.m. ET at Muirfield Village, which is notorious for catching horrible weather breaks the one week of the year they have this tournament. It’s supposed to rain again on Thursday, and potentially every day after that. But the morning wave does look like it could get past the worst of it so we could see Tiger come in on time Thursday afternoon.

Woods will be in the featured groups stream on those services and, barring no weather delays, play out of the TV coverage window on Golf Channel from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. ET.
