A Bridge to the Heart

“How did you know I was here?”

Somi stood on the enormous bridge which connected the separated land. Below the heavy waters raged against the proud pillars whilst cars and buses passed behind her, eager to get to their destination.

Her pink haired friend too had joined her, leaning against the railing as he peered into the madness beneath; eyes twinkling and hair swaying in numerous directions due to the slight breeze.

“I had a strange feeling.” He replied as his eyes met hers. It was as if he was reading her soul in an attempt to find the answers to the questions that clouded his mind in that exact moment.

The moon hung peacefully in the night sky, blanketed by the warmth and the beaming lights; a contrast to the furious waters that bashed and exploded below.

For a while, they let the silence take over, enjoying each others company until Somi decided to break the stillness.

“I still think about him, you know?” the brunette sighed as she watched Jaemin for any sign of discomfort, “It’s been two years since he left and yet it’s as if he’s still here.”

A small boat glided against the rough waters, disappearing beneath their very feet where their attention dragged. Observing the two men who boarded the moving vehicle, pulling their waves of laughter along with them.

“I can’t forget him, Jaemin. He was my best friend. I hate him with all my heart but that doesn’t change the fact that we shared our childhood together.”

Jaemin’s heart stung as the words that circled his mind forced its way out into the darkness, “You love him, don’t you?”

Her tears filled the busy night as he watched her with worry, pain enveloping his body at the sight of the normally strong and cheerful girl.

Slowly he wrapped his arms around her small frame, a gentle hand placed on the back of her head as her soft tears stained his navy blue hoodie.

It was this moment that made Jaemin want to protect her, to tell her that everything would be fine even though, for now, it wasn’t.

“You’ll get through this, I promise.”

Jaemin holds back the tears that threatened to fall as he said the few words which his mother shared to him before her passing. Words in which would forever be engraved in Somi’s heart.

“Just keep smiling, Somi. Just keep smiling...”
