- those two funny feathers coming out from his wings are used for his breeding display

- they do not build nests, but instead lay their eggs on the ground

- they are really hard to color wow 😭

Bird #39 - the Eurasian nightjar (LC)

This cryptic bird has been subject to multiple myths. People thought they suckled goats' milk in the middle of the night! There also seems to be a more modern myth that they can echolocate like bats. (Also not true!)

They do hunt bugs in flight in the pitch dark, so it feels like they should have some sort of extra sense to help them, but no! Even their hearing seems pretty average, unlike owls that can use sound to hunt. Who knows how they manage to chase bugs around out in the dark??

and it's not even the only bird-of-paradise monster in the game! there are several!

I'd guess you're either thinking of the standard-winged nightjar (standard as in a flag not standard as in "normal" because well. look at it):

Both of these species' giant display feathers are actually only a temporary feature! The males grow them during the breeding season each year and then shed them, presumably because having them all year round would be a horrific nuisance

My take on Heart’s wings! 💜🪽

Heart has three pairs of wings, with the middle pair being the largest with both of those wings having the moon phases

The wings and really long feathers were based off a Standard-winged nightjar, the eye spots are from a Luna moth!

love the wing posts as a dragon autistic who also has it as a huge pet peeve and has infodumped to my mother abt it since we both watch hotd For The Dragons but can i also say. bird wings can also be fucked up so bad and it tortures me with birds as my special interest. i dont have any examples but it exists even if its a bit less common than dragon wings and its horrid. anyway keep wingposting its great

Weird freaks. They were like. Well I'm gonna make my wings rectangular. iirc though, they cant fly for very long so they can only do short bursts and glide (I think).

The more I think about it the more I realize the wings I gave qtubbo for my design(standard wing nightjar) would hurt like a bitch coming in. If we go with Tubbos body grows new features when he shifts and not just “poof wings now” holy hell that would hurt coming out of his back
