The Marvels of St. Lucian Wildcrafted Sea Moss: A Nutrient-Packed Ocean Treasure
A hidden gem known as sea moss lies in the azure waters surrounding the picturesque island of St. Lucia. But not just any sea moss – St. Lucian wildcrafted sea moss, revered for its purity and abundance of nutrients. This humble seaweed has been cherished for centuries by Caribbean communities for its remarkable health benefits and culinary versatility. Let's dive into the depths of this ocean treasure and explore why St. Lucian wildcrafted sea moss is capturing the attention of health enthusiasts worldwide.
Understanding St. Lucian Wildcrafted Sea Moss:
St. Lucian wildcrafted sea moss, also known scientifically as Chondrus crispus, is a species of red algae that grows abundantly along the rocky shores of St. Lucia. Unlike commercially farmed varieties, wildcrafted sea moss is harvested by hand from its natural habitat, ensuring minimal environmental impact and maximum nutrient density.
The term "wildcrafted" emphasizes local seaweed gatherers' sustainable and eco-friendly harvesting practices. Instead of relying on artificial cultivation methods, wildcrafted sea moss can flourish in its natural habitat, absorbing essential minerals and nutrients from the pristine Caribbean waters.
Nutritional Benefits of St. Lucian Wildcrafted Sea Moss:
One of the most compelling reasons st lucian sea moss has gained popularity is its impressive nutritional profile. This humble seaweed is packed with many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, making it a powerhouse of health benefits.
Rich in Essential Minerals: St. Lucian wildcrafted sea moss is renowned for its high mineral content, including iodine, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and selenium. These minerals are crucial in maintaining healthy thyroid function, supporting bone health, regulating blood pressure, and promoting overall well-being.
Source of Vitamins: In addition to minerals, St. Lucian wildcrafted sea moss is also rich in vitamins, particularly vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, and various B vitamins. Vitamin C boosts the immune system and promotes collagen production, while vitamin E acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting cells from oxidative damage.
Digestive Support: The mucilaginous properties of sea moss make it an excellent natural remedy for digestive issues such as indigestion, bloating, and constipation. When consumed, sea moss forms a gel-like substance that coats the digestive tract, soothing inflammation and promoting healthy digestion.
Skin and Hair Health: Sea moss is a popular ingredient in skincare and hair care products due to its hydrating and nourishing properties. The vitamins and minerals in sea moss help promote radiant skin, strengthen hair follicles, and improve overall skin and health.
How to Incorporate St. Lucian Wildcrafted Sea Moss into Your Diet:
Fortunately, integrating sea moss st lucia into your daily diet is easier than you might think. Here are some simple ways to enjoy the nutritional benefits of this marine superfood:
Sea Moss Gel: Prepare sea moss gel by soaking dried sea moss in water overnight, then blending it into a smooth gel-like consistency. This versatile gel can be added to smoothies, juices, sauces, soups, and desserts for an extra nutritional boost.
Sea Moss Smoothies: Blend sea moss gel with your favorite fruits, vegetables, and plant-based milk to create delicious and nutrient-rich smoothies. Experiment with different flavor combinations to find your perfect blend.
Sea Moss Drinks: Enjoy sea moss in the form of refreshing beverages by mixing sea moss gel with water, coconut water, or fruit juice. Add a dash of lemon or lime for a zesty twist.
Sea Moss Snacks: Get creative in the kitchen by incorporating sea moss into homemade snacks such as energy balls, puddings, or granola bars. Combine sea moss gel with nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and spices for a nutritious and satisfying treat.
The Sustainability of St. Lucian Wildcrafted Sea Moss Harvesting:
While the demand for St. Lucian wildcrafted sea moss continues to grow, it's essential to prioritize sustainable harvesting practices to ensure the long-term health of marine ecosystems. Local seaweed gatherers in St. Lucia are committed to preserving marine life's delicate balance by responsibly harvesting sea moss and minimizing environmental impact.
Conclusion:
St. Lucian wildcrafted sea moss is more than just a culinary ingredient – it's a nutrient-packed ocean treasure with a rich history and remarkable health benefits. From abundant essential minerals and vitamins to its versatile culinary applications, sea moss offers many reasons to incorporate it into your daily diet. By choosing wildcrafted sea moss sourced from sustainable sources, you can enjoy its nutritional goodness while supporting the preservation of marine ecosystems on the beautiful island of St. Lucia.

Richard Nattoo is an illustrator and fine artist born in St. Catherine Jamaica. He graduated from the University of Technology where he received a BA in Architecture. Richard’s work has been featured in several National Gallery of Jamaica exhibitions as well as solo exhibits. He has garnered much acclaim for his surreal dreamlike creations that explore human emotions on a raw cerebral level.
Born in 1958, Alwyn St. Omer is the fourth child in a family of nine. His Mother Cynthia was a personal assistant in the Prime Minister’s office and his father the late Hon. Sir Dunstan St. Omer, a widely acclaimed international artist of Saint Lucian origins.
As a child, Alwyn was inspired by the plentiful supply of picture books around the house, which served to motivate him to draw and paint pictures. Also, at about age six he was introduced to Illustrated Classics and Marvel Comics, which stimulated his appetite, not only for graphic designs, but also for fairytales and storytelling in a pictorial format. Growing up in an artistic environment provided stimulus. Alwyn as a young inspiring artist was privileged to witness plays performed by the famous local company—Saint Lucia Arts Guild—adding a dimension of realism to what he saw and read on the page. He was enamoured by plays steeped in the island’s rich folk and musical traditions that included some of the early works of the island’s Nobel Laureate, poet Derek Walcott and his playwright twin brother Roderick.
It is from this launching pad that Alwyn, the artist and storyteller was thrust into orbit, a creative artist with very deep passion and lifelong desire to document his island’s cultural heritage through his drawings and paintings. For him rediscovery and preservation of all the treasures forming the formidable expanse loosely termed the Saint Lucian Environment, History, Culture and Folklore would be his life’s achievement. Its art, myths, writings and traditions.
Alwyn studied Art at the Edna Manley School for the Visual Arts in Jamaica and Video Production and Audio Visuals at Portsmouth College in England. Alwyn is a master draughtsman and colorist defining and refining images in a style that is uniquely his own. His work is numerous including paintings in Acrylics and oil on canvas, Pen and ink illustrations and wall murals. Of note are his Design of St Lucia’s National Independence Monument, the Semi Dome Mural in the ceiling of the ancient River Doree Anglican Church in Choiseul, the Castries City Council commissioned outdoor murals at Faux- a-Chaud on the outskirts of the city, his Moon Dancer Series of abstract Paintings based on the lost Masquerade Tradition of St Lucia and Soucoyan, a Graphic Novel on St Lucian Folktales.

Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Rental Home
Hello, my wonderful friends! It’s really great to start this week with a new Beautiful Homes of Instagram and I know this one will inspire many readers.
Dani Ferretti of @GoldCoastCanvas is talented, brave and she is here to show us that we can make of our home a “home-sweet-home” wherever we are, regardless if it’s our forever home or a rental.
Please, make sure to follow her on Instagram (it will make her day!) and take notes on how she decorated her beautiful rental home!
Hey friends, Dani of @goldcoastcanvas here! I’m so humbled that Luciane reached out to me and it is truly an honor to be featured among such incredibly talented designers here on HomeBunch. I never would have imagined that our once plain-jane rental home would someday be worthy of this. I am feeling excited and grateful (and maybe a little bit like the new girl at the lunch table!).
My boyfriend Brad and I both grew up in South Florida and we are true barefoot, ocean-loving Florida kids at heart. We’ve both bounced around the country (and the globe) quite a bit since leaving home. We most recently moved to Austin, Texas where we’ll stay until it’s time to make the permanent move back home to Florida.
As you can imagine, being away from family and the ocean takes some adjusting to. This is why it was so important that our home in Austin, no matter how temporary, still have space for guests and still reflect that breezy lifestyle we love most. We chose a modern, new-construction home in South Austin not far from downtown. It was the perfect jumping off point for the activities we love most: hiking the greenbelt with our chocolate lab Soko, hitting up our favorite taco truck, or catching some waves at the surf park (yes, you can surf in the middle of Texas!)
I have always loved coastal decor, but it took me years to hone in on my true design aesthetic. Once I started focusing on how I wanted our home to feel rather than how I wanted it to look, everything clicked into place. For this house, I really wanted to create a home that felt like a sanctuary and that was easy to live in – where spaces felt organic and nothing was too precious. I think that is what makes coastal homes so appealing to me. They are meant for the happy messes of sandy feet and salty hair.
Beautiful Homes of Instagram: Rental Home
This is the talented homeowner, Dani, with her adorable dog. I am so proud of how she made of this rental a real home.
Home Location: Austin, Texas
Home Specs: Modern, 3 bed / 2.5 bath, 2000sqft
Entryway
I have always loved coastal decor, but it took me years to hone in on my true design aesthetic. Once I started focusing on how I wanted our home to feel rather than how I wanted it to look, everything clicked into place.

Faux Stems: Pottery Barn.
Vase: Target (no longer available) – Others: here & here.
Similar Baskets: here, here & here.
Living Room
I continued the neutral palette into the living room so as not to overwhelm the open space. I grounded it with an amazing collection of pillows from my favorite shops and an earthy, warm coffee table that everyone can gather around. We are just weeks away from getting a brand new custom sofa. I wish it had come in time for pictures but I’ll definitely be sharing it on my feed when it does arrive – so stay tuned!

Kitchen
The thing that sold me most on this house was the kitchen. As serial renters, we were used to dealing with suboptimal cooking spaces (our kitchen in our San Francisco apartment had about two feet of counter space!) This one felt like a long-awaited luxury to us. I softened the modern finishes with more organic selections like the vintage-inspired rug, aged cutting boards and handmade ceramic dishware.

Dining Area
Our dining room is small but I knew we needed a sizable table for big dinner gatherings. To make it work, I opted for benches that could be pushed under the table when not in use. I love how it created a cozy little nook on the wall side. The photos above the table are actually sketches of the different homes we’ve made memories in: Brad’s apartment in Sydney, the St. Louis bungalow my father grew up in and the 120 year old Victorian we lived in in San Francisco.

Home Office
Upstairs, we have an open loft area that looks out over our living room. I work from home full-time and knew immediately that this would make a great office because it’s a defined space that still feels open to the rest of the house.
Rug
DIY
I wanted to do something unique with the alcove so we opted for some large, diy floating shelves and a gallery wall featuring some of our favorite pieces.
Desk: World Market – Also seen on these “Beautiful Homes of Instagram”: here & here.
Colors & Textures
While I stuck with earthy neutrals, I used this space as an opportunity to be a little more playful with color and pattern.

Side Table: West Elm.
Lamp: World Market.
Button Pillow: West Elm – similar here.
Wide Mat Gallery Frame over armchair: Pottery Barn.
Guest Bedroom
Down the hall is our guest bedroom. I reupholstered an existing bed to give it a clean linen look like the one in our own room. This room really challenged me to flex my creative muscles and I love the unexpected combination of old and new. The aged metals, rugged handmade nightstands and modern decor accents all come together to create a space that I hope any guest can appreciate.

Rug: Loloi.
Wall Paint Color
Hardware: Amerock Bar Pulls in Sterling Nickel.
Prints by Marcelle Calder.
Counters: Cultured marble.
Faucets: Moen.
Master Bedroom
I took my time designing our master bedroom and it is my absolute favorite room in the house. I wanted to keep this room clean and simple, while still giving it enough layers to feel cozy. I stuck with two main colors – a blue/grey and cream – and brought things to life with lots of different textures. From the driftwood nightstands to the chunky cotton quilt to the faded rug, everything in this room is meant to feel a bit organic and weathered, yet still refined.
Paint Color & Bedding
Wall Color: Silver Drop by Behr.
Sunset Painting: McGee & Co.
Quilt: West Elm (I highly recommend bedding by West Elm).

Master Bathroom
In our master bathroom, the contrast of the dark tiling and the white finishes adds a touch of drama. I kept decor simple with some minimalist palm prints and a faded vintage-inspired runner.

Backyard
Having usable outdoor space was really important to us. However, when we moved in, our backyard was just a plain patch of grass. Since we’re renting, we worked with our landlord to come up with an affordable solution. With my dad’s help, we built this raised gravel patio ourselves!
Bistro Set: Ikea.

Home-Sweet-Home
The new raised gravel patio ended up being a hit in the neighborhood and inevitably, all of our gatherings end up out here. I’m so glad we went for it! It serves as a reminder that no matter where you’re living at the moment, it’s always worth a little investment to make it feel like home. You don’t have to wait for your dream house!
Many thanks to Dani for sharing all of the details above.

DAP's retail store in Fields Corner is open, and it really is absolutely stocked with homegrown artists' will work
The Dorchester Art Project retail store is formally open at 1490 Dorchester Ave. in Fields Corner, this means citizens now have a new put to shop for artwork, audio, clothes, and other products designed by Dorchester artists.
The two-stage storefront house, which adjoins DAP’s upstairs gallery and new music venue, gives the corporation added visibility and a larger, handicap-available, street-degree footprint in the neighborhood. It also figures to participate in a important position in developing DAP’s sustainability by supplementing artist cash flow and organizational overhead costs.
Shop/gallery supervisor Emma Leavitt discussed that the shop’s base income design, a 30-70 break up to the artists, aims to give tenants and local community artists a brick and mortar system to offer their wares.
“We want to generate earnings streams that put revenue back in the pockets of Dorchester artists,” mentioned Leavitt, who included that an online retailer is in the functions and ought to be up and managing quickly.
Right after getting acquired in early September, the additional than 6,000 square-foot place was reworked in a subject of months, many thanks to an military of DAP volunteers, who cleaned the previous industry place and created it new with some decorations and a fresh coat of paint. A further week was used getting store furnishings and moving inventory into the shop, reported Leavitt.
The regional flavor of the store is visible on entry: music by Dorchester artists like Brandie Blaze and Cliff Notez bleeds from the speakers and adorns shelves in each CD and cassette types, while a brief spin of the apparel racks reveals parts from area manufacturers like Our 20s.
Big canvas paintings hold for sale in the window, whilst more compact prints, posters, stickers, and other memorabilia are stocked in a look at-out exhibit case. In addition to apparel — each thrifted and domestically consigned— the store delivers an assortment of extras, health merchandise, artwork supplies, media, and even refurbished musical devices. As a result of it all, the guiding tenet of Dorchester Artwork Job to “support community artists” continues to be front and centre, or, in the situation of DAP’s branded hoodies and t-shirts, hand-monitor-printed in white lettering on the back again.
The shop is only a single element of the adaptable Dorchester Ave. space, which will inevitably be home to a dancefloor/stage spot and added art and tunes studios in the basement. For now, a workshop room on the ground ground is open to any individual in the neighborhood who needs to prevent by and make some art.
Leavitt defined that a drop-in working day charge for the workshop will work on a sliding scale: $5 for kids, $10 for teenagers, and $20 for grown ups to use the creative area for the day. Extra artwork courses and programming will very likely be added in the coming months.
Dorchester Art Job will go on accepting donations of artwork provides as effectively as consigned things. Any neighborhood vendors interested in promoting their items at the retail store are inspired to access out to DAP.
In a neighborhood as multicultural as Dorchester, even a regionally sourced retail store is sure to characteristic some significantly-flung products. One particular these kinds of featured product? St. Lucian sea moss, a variety of pure aquatic plant development with a broad vary of touted well being advantages that designed its way to DAP retail outlet shelves, many thanks to an help from an artist-tenant at the corporation.

Bangkok to Host 30th Global Summit of Women in April
Over 1,000 female leaders are expected to attend the Global Summit of Women in Bangkok from 23 to 25 April 2020. The event, the 30th anniversary of the summit, is expected to generate about 80 million Baht in revenue for the Thai economy. The opening ceremony will be presided over by Thai Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha, who will also deliver the keynote speech.
Key women ministers from several countries in ASEAN, as well as some from as far away as Africa and South America, are also expected to attend the ceremony. “We look forward to bringing a global gathering of women to Thailand, world-renowned for its beauty, but not yet as well-known for its dynamic economy, where many women lead enterprises of all sizes,” said Ms. Irene Natividad, President of the Global Summit of Women. “Thailand ranks high in women’s economic participation, both regionally and globally, making it an ideal venue under the 2020 Summit theme: ‘Women: Revolutionise Economies’. This reflects women’s roles in raising national GDP globally, as they entering the workforce as managers and altering business models and practices now and in the future.” In 2019, the Global Summit of Women was held in Basel and attracted 1,065 Delegates from 70 Countries. According to the event's website, the summit was created "as the nexus at which all sectors – public, private and nonprofit – would come together under the common vision of dramatically expanding women’s economic opportunities globally through exchanges of working solutions and creative strategies forged by women leaders in different parts of the world. It is a business summit, whose ‘business’ focus is women’s advancement in the global economy." See latest Travel News, Interviews, Podcasts and other news regarding: MICE, Women, Bangkok. Dom was at her castle getting dressed. She complained that she didn’t like the uniform and her father sighed. “ dom please don’t get expelled.....again. These uniforms are here to help.” Dom looked up at him and frowned. “ no it’s here to kill my creativity. I do not approve. This is abuse.” She yelped. “Abuse of what?” “Me!” Lucian shook his head and laughed. “ how about wearing it the way you like it.” Dom nodded and started to take it off and redesigning the uniform. She did her hair in drop curles and her make up. “ dom don’t get into fights.” Her eyes shifted to Micheal and she shook her head. “ you and I both know I can’t promise that. When I find out who’s bullying my cousin I’m slashing their face and I’m gonna give them a taste of their own medicine. All I have to do is make an example out of one of them.” Micheal looked slightly afraid for the girls and he looked at Lucian, whom shrugged his shoulders. “ Mahina won’t be alone to deal with those peasants and if I have to be that evil mean girl then so be it. They will wish they never bothered my little cousin.” Micheal looked st her. “ what will your boyfriend say?” “ Not a damn thing. He always fighting for Mahina too. I don’t see why he’d have a pro-“ “ because you slashed some ones face.” Dom didn’t see his point and gave him a face to show it. She gave her father a kiss and a hug and did the same for her brothers. She got on her motorcycle and drove to her school. Dom spotted a couple of girls that glared at her. She glared back with a smirked challenging them. She stood at the top of the stairs leaning on the doors and waited for her cousin. Once she smelled her she grinned. “ ah love! Nope I begged daddy to let me come early. And I bribed uncle magnus with my brownies to not tell you yet.” She grinned hugging her. Dom looked at her uniform and shook her head. “ well let’s get going yeah.” She looked at magnus and Jon and waved. “ hey hey uncle and pops in law. How’s it going?”
The royal family origins
Dom stood in the castle at the tender age of thirteen. Her deep brown eyes looked out the window. She stood at 5’3 with a curvy figure. Her short jet black hair hung over her eyes almost shadowing them. She picked up her silver daggers. One was jet black with indents in it to drain out blood easier. The other was one of three. A deep blue dagger with a dragon on it. The sign of a pendragon. Her grandfather had a blue and red one and her aunt had a red one. Dom mother Selena walked into the room. “My sweet child are you ready for you journey?” Dom nodded putting on her hoodie. She had her mothers eyes deep and brown, but unlike her mothers hers turn jet black when she was mad. Selena smiled and hugged her. “Find my sister if anyone can do it it’s you. Tell her Selena is looking for her and bring her home.” The queen missed her older sister. They had lost contact when Selena left the kingdom to learn and practice her healing magic and control her death magic. Which was passed on to her first and only daughter. Dom fixes the hood and left out on a black horse keeping into the shadows. A month later dom came soon a camp of wolves. She walked in and looked around. She noticed eyes staring at her and she didn’t bother to even spare a glance. @lightoftheluna

‘Born Ya': Speaking with Jamaican fine artist Judy Ann MacMillan about her new autobiography

‘Born Ya': Speaking with Jamaican fine artist Judy Ann MacMillan about her new autobiography
‘The art of marketing […] has replaced the art of painting’
Fine artist Judy Ann MacMillan at Rockfield, her country home in St. Ann, Jamaica. Image courtesy MacMillan, used with permission.
Jamaican artist Judy Ann MacMillan concludes her autobiography with these powerful words:
We spend so much of our lives making the best of the consequences of earlier choices, doubting often whether those choices were the right ones […] At this stage of my life, I am still painting not because I’m in the trap of habit but simply for the love of it. I know that one day the paintbrush will drop out of my hand but if I had never sold a painting, I would still have done it because it helped me to appreciate the extraordinary gift of life and life’s beauty.
Her wry, earthy and contemplative self-portrait is called “Born Ya: The Life and Loves of a Jamaican Painter.” “Born Ya,” is a title taken from a popular song that means “Born Here.”
Self-portrait, “Wearing a Crown of Thorns” by Judy Ann MacMillan, used with permission.
MacMillan, who was born in Kingston, in 1945, is well known for her piercing portraits, expansive yet intimate landscapes, and rich still life paintings, mostly done in oils. Her mentor, the celebrated Jamaican artist Albert Huie, invited her to paint with him when she was still a young girl. She went on to train at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in Dundee, Scotland, and held her first show in Jamaica at 22. Since then, she has exhibited many times, both at home and overseas. In 2007, she was inducted into the Hall of Fame by the Caribbean Foundation for the Arts for her outstanding contribution to fine art. She currently divides her time between Kingston and her country home in Rockfield, St. Ann, Jamaica. MacMillan grew up in a comfortable home as the daughter of a successful businessman and a strong-willed mother from rural Jamaica. Unlike most middle-class Jamaican women at the time, she was not interested in settling down as a housewife and mother; instead, she forged her own path. In her memoirs, MacMillan offers subtle and often humorous insights into Jamaican society, in particular its class structure and relationships between men and women. This is illustrated in her diverse, empathetic portraits of Jamaicans, including homeless people, Rastafarians, rural women, farmers and domestic servants. Although she has lived overseas and is well-travelled, her greatest love is the island of her birth — painting its landscapes and its people — clearly evident in two of her books, “Still Painting,” and “My Jamaica.” I conducted a virtual interview (via email and WhatsApp) with MacMillan about her autobiography, her life as a painter and the complexities and contradictions of Jamaican society and class structure. Emma Lewis (EL): Let's start at the beginning. How would you sum up your childhood?
Judy Ann MacMillan (JAM): Innocent and happy. Even though I was terrified of my parents’ wrath, I felt completely loved, and that security was a good preparation for adulthood.

EL: Jamaica is your home — you were “born ya.” What do you consider to be the island’s unique qualities?
JAM: Jamaica’s physical beauty is its own reason for being. Its culture as climate to a unique degree, because the island is a sensual experience. Few places feel as good on one’s skin as Jamaica. The sea is the temperature of your body, you can stay in it for hours. The combination of temperature and the visual beauty of nature create[s] a seductive harmony that is hard to beat.

EL: Your insights into Jamaican middle-class mores are sharp and witty. Do you think society has changed in any fundamental way in the past decade or two?
JAM: Yes, the class structure has changed enormously. In my youth, the staff in elegant resort villas lowered their voices when guests entered the house. Now they raise them. My insights are from the inside, and that’s where you see that Jamaica’s vision of itself is quite different to the way we are seen by outsiders. For example, Jamaica does not see itself as a poor country, and just as our poor people do not see themselves as poor, our middle class modelled themselves on the English upper class and had no idea that they were middle class. These attitudes are very puzzling to outsiders, and compounded by the insider language of the island — as in the title ‘Born Ya’ — are the source of a great deal of Jamaica’s identity crises, which is puzzling, surprising and very amusing.
EL: Would you describe yourself as a feminist? Is the macho culture still alive and well in Jamaica?
JAM: I would not have described myself as a feminist when I was young because although I respect them intellectually, I considered the lack of a man to take care of me to be a profound failure. But the fact that I was able to take care of myself made me a feminist. The macho culture is very much alive and well, aided by the complicity of the women.
EL: What is your favourite painting, and why?
JAM: It’s impossible to choose one painting out of all my favourites. One of my most admired contemporary painters is Lucian Freud. The humanity in his nudes and portraits has reduced me to tears on occasion.
“My Land” by Judy Ann MacMillan: Landscape, part of the view from the artist's country home in Rockfield, St. Ann, Jamaica. Image courtesy MacMillan, used with permission.
EL: If you had not found Rockfield (your country home), what — or where — would have been your inspiration?
JAM: The museums, the temples of the great paintings of the past are still my inspiration for my work. Finding Rockfield was a result of my ongoing appreciation of nature. That appreciation could have happened anywhere.
EL: In your book, you call yourself a “misfit” several times. Do you think creative people are misfits by nature?
JAM: Yes.
EL: You give short shrift to the “national art” scene in Jamaica. How do you think the Jamaican art community could evolve in a more inclusive way?
“Moses of Riverton City,” a portrait by Judy Ann MacMillan, used with permission.
JAM: I give short shrift to the universal art world of which Jamaica is just a small imitative part. The art world has changed so much from the one of my youth as to be unrecognisable and I don’t have or want a place in it. I wanted to be a painter, not a marketeer — but the art of marketing to the mass market has replaced the art of painting. In these new skills I am at a disadvantage, because I have no idea how to create a brand of myself on the commercial market. Taping a banana to a wall, as happened at last year’s Art Basel, with a price tag of many hundreds of thousands of dollars is where these marketing stunts have led contemporary art.
EL: What is the future of fine art in Jamaica?
JAM: Fine art itself is under intense challenge in Jamaica, as it is elsewhere. The tenets of what used to be known as fine art are in conflict with social improvement, political messages and democratic ideas. Marketing a commercial product has displaced the artist is his garret.
EL: How would you describe the physical act of painting?
JAM: Painting is like dancing on a tightrope. It’s a balancing act of tone, colour, drawing, heart, hand and brain. Keeping all these elements balanced creates a tension that feels impossible while it is going on. But sometimes when the search to put the experience in paint is over, there is an elation that is for me addictive.
EL: Where is the one place where you feel you really “belong”?
JAM: Jamaica, of course.

Console Table: Here in Distressed Grey – similar here & here.

Upstairs, we have an open loft area that looks out over our living room. I work from home full-time and knew immediately that this would make a great office because it’s a defined space that still feels open to the rest of the house.

DIY
I wanted to do something unique with the alcove so we opted for some large, diy floating shelves and a gallery wall featuring some of our favorite pieces.

While I stuck with earthy neutrals, I used this space as an opportunity to be a little more playful with color and pattern.

Backyard
Having usable outdoor space was really important to us. However, when we moved in, our backyard was just a plain patch of grass. Since we’re renting, we worked with our landlord to come up with an affordable solution. With my dad’s help, we built this raised gravel patio ourselves!

Sketch by Brit artist @LincolnTownley over a bowl of noodles at London @wagamama_uk set to raise thousands for mental health charity @MindCharity
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
A SKETCH by successful Brit artist Lincoln Townley he did while enjoying a bowl of noodles at wagamama is set to raise thousands of pounds for mental health charity Mind.
The millionaire artist, known for painting the rich and famous and is a favourite of actor Sir Michael Caine, was discussing the sale of one of his collection with a collector at the restaurant’s Noodle Lab in Soho, London.
Earlier this year the artist sold one of his collection for a million pounds and is currently putting the finishing touches to his biggest exhibition to date at the world famous La Bienale in Venice in May.
Sitting in wagamama he noticed a paper place mat which was entitled Open Mouths, Open minds, mindful colouring sheets in recognition of their association with the mental health charity Mind. It read, ‘pick up a pencil and share whats on your mind’ and because his actress wife Denise Welch is an ambassador of Mind he did just that.
The collector who was sat with him was so impressed he offered to buy it rather than leaving it to be thrown away by the restaurant waiter. Instead Lincoln kept it, signed the work and offered it to wagamama to be auctioned to raise as much money as possible for Mind. Lincoln’s sketches can sell for as much as £20,000 and the image he created shows a screaming, tortured face.
Townley’s career has exploded and in just seven years he is a multi-millionaire having exhibited at the Royal Academy and two shows at The Saatchi Gallery London. In this short time his smaller original oil works have gone from selling at £2,000 to be now worth over £100,000 - a massive 4,900 per cent increase on investment. His latest larger work, priced at £1million, represents an incredible career to date.
Lincoln painted Sir Michael Caine and his wife Shakira, after presenting him the painting the legendary actor who is a collector of his work said: "There's no doubt in my opinion that Lincoln is the next Andy Warhol."
Lincoln said: “The idea of expressing feelings is extremely important to my art. After sitting down and looking at the opportunity to create something showing my inner emotion on something as simple as a place mat is genius, I just had to get involved. Mental Health is a major issue and the best way to understand it and cope with this terribly debilitating illness is to communicate on every level and art can give people the medium to do this.
“My wife Denise Welch is an ambassador for Mind and is extremely vocal in her fight with the illness and extends this regularly to so many people, her belief to share and talk about mental illness is so important to her and our family. I wanted to give back and if we can raise some money and awareness for the amazing charity Mind then that’s fabulous.”
wagamama is combating the stigma of mental health by asking people to open up and talk about what’s on their mind.
wagamama has announced its commitment to raising awareness of mental health continuing its successful partnership with Mind.
The restaurant has partnered with the mental health charity to launch their “Open Mouths. Open Minds” campaign.
The partnership with Mind, the leading mental health charity, will help raise funds for their Infoline service, enabling an extra 8,000 phone calls to be answered in 2019, by donating 25p from the sale of every ‘super green’ and ‘power’ juice from now until 6 March.
wagamama hosted a special event at its London based Noodle Lab restaurant on Dean St, Soho, to mark Time To Talk Day on February 7.
The “Open Mouths. Open Minds” campaign is aiming to encourage people to open up and share what is on their mind to help break the stigma surrounding mental health.
wagamama has changed their iconic placemats into mindful colouring sheets in recognition of Mind. Colouring is a relaxing and simple way of making time for yourself and concentrating in this way may help to reduce stress levels and negative thoughts. wagamama will also be installing giant colouring walls in major cities around the UK to encourage shoppers and passers-by to lose themselves in a mindful exercise for a moment or two.
Kate Dell, Marketing Manager at wagamama said: “At wagamama we want guests to feel nourished both in body and mind when they leave our restaurants, whether this be from restoring themselves with a steaming bowl of ramen, good conversation on our benches or from picking up a pencil to colour in. We are proud to partner with Mind and support the incredible work that they do. We would like to thank Lincoln for his support and we hope his images makes a lot of money.”
Committed to encouraging people to open up, wagamama will be hosting a series of events including a Mental Health panel discussion in their Noodle Lab (wagamama’s London based test restaurant) on Time to Talk Day, 7 February 2019. With four Mental Health campaigners including; Bryony Gordon and Dr Rangan Chatterjee sharing first-hand the importance and effect opening up has had on their own mental health. A number of tickets will be available for the event, which will be shared live, and on social media.
Stephen Buckley, Head of Information, at Mind, said: “We are hugely grateful to wagamama for choosing to raise awareness and funds for the Mind Infoline. The money raised over the course of this campaign will help to fund our vital Infoline services, allowing us to answer more than 8,000 additional calls this year. Together with wagamama we can continue to be there for people who need it, when they need it the most.”
Last year Lincoln sold a diamond encrusted portrait of the late Princess Diana for a personal record-breaking £1million, beating his previous record of £510,000 set by his painting of Mohammed Ali. The Princess Diana painting, a huge two metre square oil and acrylic spray on linen, had over £100,000 worth of diamonds embedded into the canvas to give a spectacular finish.
Townley sold one of his major ‘Hell’ works using the cryptocurrency Bitcoin for over half a million pounds will use the Venice exhibition to unveil his Behind The Mask collection, valued at over £5million.
The global launch at La Biennale of 25 number works of art depict man’s desires and the need to succeed. The collection shows graphically the layers of our lives controlled by the use of oil paint and charcoal on paper.
The self taught artist initially struggled against an established art market but is now highly sought after and collected around the world including America, Australia, the Middle East and Europe.
The Venice Biennale has been established for over 120 years and is one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world. Established in 1895, the Biennale has an attendance of over 500,000 visitors at the Art Exhibition every year. The history of the La Biennale di Venezia dates back from 1895, when the first International Art Exhibition was organised. In the 1930s new festivals were born: Music, Cinema, and Theatre (the Venice Film Festival in 1932 was the first film festival in history). In 1980 the first International Architecture Exhibition took place and in 1999 Dance made its debut at La Biennale.
La Biennale has hosted collections over the years including many British artists such as Henry Moore, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Richard Hamilton, Gilbert & George, Anish Kapoor, Damien Hirst, Tracey Erin, Sarah Lucas and Steve McQueen.
The internationally successful artist has also been chosen for the fourth year to paint the BAFTA honourees. The British Academy of Film and Television Arts honourees included Kenneth Branagh, Matt Damon, Ava DuVernay, Claire Foy, film legend Dick Van Dyke, Jodie Foster, Ricky Gervais, Samuel L. Jackson, Felicity Jones, Ang Lee, and Ewan McGregor. The previous year he painted Orlando Bloom, James Corden, Harrison Ford, Sam Mendes, Amy Schumer and Meryl Streep.
James Nicholls, Managing Director and Curator of the Maddox Gallery, Mayfair, London, said: "In each generation it is a rare occurrence when an artist has the potential to become iconic, and it is our considered opinion that Lincoln Townley is such an extraordinary artist. The British artist was relatively unknown four years ago, now he has become famous for creating the most vivid insight into producing electrifying portraits of Hollywood stars such as; Al Pacino, Dame Judi Dench, Gary Oldman, Sir John Hurt, Robert Downey Jr. Judi Dench, Russell Brand and Charlie Sheen.
"Sir Michael Caine recently described him as the new Andy Warhol, and others see a Francis Bacon-like quality in his work. The value of his work has risen 200% in the last two years alone."
Note to editors:
Lincoln Townley is a world-renowned British artist known for his ability to capture the creative and sometimes turbulent energies that drives the world’s most iconic stars to perform at the peak of their powers.
He has been commissioned to paint many of the world’s biggest icons including Charlie Sheen, Al Pacino, Sir Michael Caine and his original oil paintings of demons drawn from the unconscious mind, have been exhibited at major international galleries including the National Gallery and the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
In October 2015, he was first commissioned by BAFTA LA to paint the six Honourees at the Britannia Awards. A recovering alcoholic, Townley has donated works to many charities and divides his time between London and Los Angeles. He is also the author of The Hunger published by Simon & Schuster. wagamama: our story and our food ‘kaizen’, meaning ‘good change’ is the philosophy that sits right at our heart. It shapes every dish we create, and pushes us to find better ways in all that we do. We’re restless spirits, forever creating and making things better.
We’ve been practising kaizen since 1992, when we opened our first doors in London’s Bloomsbury. Inspired by fast-paced, Japanese ramen bars and a celebration of Asian food, wagamama burst into life. We set out to create a unique way of eating; bringing the fresh, nourishing, flavours of Asia to all.
A warming bowl of bold ramen, teppan dishes griddled to perfection or if you would rather rice, you’re in luck - our menu features many Japanese favourites. Fresh, authentic menus that are updated seasonally. wagamama is a staple of modern Asian cuisine
In the name of kaizen, our standards are high. Our ingredients are cooked fresh, served fresh. Every bowl and plate that we fill with them is served as soon as it’s ready. The colours and aromas, flavours and spices are always at their best when they touch your table.

Very little booty with a lot of heart. 😝☺️ I’ve been losing weight and my mom and grandma are concerned. My mom actuAlly made a hilarious song about flat bottoms just for me. I love her creativity. 😆 My protein levels are healthy so my weight loss isn’t muscle loss but I think it’s hilarious that I’m now being encouraged to eat more. That’s new for me. Things change. If you ever see me out, feel free to treat me to some food. I don’t discriminate. I eat food from all ethnicities & cultures. Just no bugs or strangeness. We could do Ghanaian, St. Lucian, Jamaican, Mexican, Irish... let’s do an episode of @windowsnackin ☺️🍽😘 #naturallyinflamed 🔥☀️🍃💚 #locjourney #locs #locstyles #locnation #loclivin @frommothersgarden ☀️💚🍃 https://www.instagram.com/p/BrMTHQjnoVF/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1m9fa71rworyg
