Ski-in, ski-out: Haute retreats across the Alps
The Alps’ summit-ready towns — Lech, St. Moritz and Chamonix, to name a few — make quite the convincing case to embrace the cold. Whether you’re a seasoned skier in pursuit of the world’s gnarliest peaks or a spa-goer chasing a treatment-heavy itinerary, here are my top destinations for exploring Europe’s high-altitude adventures.
POWDER PARADISE: MY TOP SKI-IN, SKI-OUT HOTELS
When clients ask what makes a ski trip spectacular, convenience is always at the top of my list. At a ski-in, ski-out hotel, you will step out of your suite and onto the slopes, eliminating the need for transportation to and from the mountain. Better yet, waking up to the panoramic views and enjoying sunsets over the snow-capped peaks creates the most magical atmosphere for an alpine getaway. When you’re ready to book, let’s look into a few of my favorite destinations:
Cheval Blanc Courchevel in Courchevel, France
Four Seasons Hotel Megève in Megève, France
Grand Hotel des Bains Kempinski St Moritz in St. Moritz, Switzerland
The Chedi Andermatt in Andermatt, Switzerland

SKI HARD, APRÈS SKI HARDER: HERE’S TO YOUR ALPINE GETAWAY
In the Alps, après ski celebrations aren’t just a practice; it’s a fully-fledged tradition. From sun-kissed brunches and boot-stomping concerts to firepits crackling with laughter and steam pouring from the spa, here are my top post-slope scenes.
Courchevel, France, is part of the extensive Three Valleys ski area and offers a luxurious après-ski experience, from upscale dining to exclusive clubs. Unwind in the many wellness centers with a massage, sauna session and other pampering treatments. Where to stay: L’Apogee Courchevel, an Oetker Collection Hotel, or Aman Le Mélézin
Val d'Isère, France, is renowned for its heated outdoor terraces accompanied by stunning mountain views. Skiers and snowboarders gather on the terraces after a day on the slopes to bask in the sun. Enjoy warm drinks, live music and picturesque scenery. Where to stay: Airelles Val d'Isère, Mademoiselle
Lech, Austria,is home to some of the most cozy and rustic lounges and chalets in the Alps. Plus, Lech-Oberlech-Zürs is linked to Warth-Schröcken-St. Anton via the Flexenbahn cableway, allowing you to conveniently explore après ski experiences across the Arlberg. Where to stay: Post Lech Arlberg

Alex told that he went skiing with his parents when he was a child, and last times they were there too. He probably went to a ski trip with his family and invited her in. Ofc she has to give it away to brag. Doesn't mean it's just them alone, bc I doubt that. //
Alex's parents haven't gone skiing with him in years and the last time was when Taylor was still around so I doubt it. For me they went to St. Anton like every year to take a vacation in the snow for Valentine's Day before he leaves for the tour in Asia.

Hello from Austria!
I’ve been wanting to do a long weekend ski trip for ages, and it’s finally a reality 🤗. Granted, what I thought would be a quick plane+train journey was in reality a 9 hour endeavour consisting of two planes, one train, and a car ride to get to Pettneu (a town just outside St. Anton). Oh well, still worth it!
While St Anton has gotten a ton of snow these last few days, I woke up this morning to a sad snow-rain mixture falling from the sky. The entire morning was a bit miserable and rather wet, alternating between rain and really foggy weather. The last two hours of the ski day made up for it though - it was absolutely beautiful with blue skies and good sunlight.
I had no idea what to expect in terms of navigating around this resort which is the 5th largest in the world and consists of 88 lift chairs / gondolas interconnected across multiple mountains. Didn’t need to worry - it was actually super easy getting around because no matter which direction you ski in, there will be a lift chair to bring you elsewhere! It’s true what they say, you don’t need to ever repeat a single run if you don’t want to. Things are also way more hi-tech here, from the automatic ski pass machines (tip: put the pass in your jacket’s shoulder pocket so it’ll automatically hit the sensors and open the gates - thank goodness for kind strangers teaching me things!) to many bubble chairlifts and heated seats. The luxury!!
Last, went for a nice walk around town before dinner and caught the golden hour, as seen below 😍.

Austria
(Written by Sam Cox - March 2, 2019)
Skiing makes me feel good. Maybe it’s just my imagination, but I feel like the best version of myself is allowed to flourish when I’m sliding on snow and interacting with other skiers - they’re my tribe, it’s where I feel included and what keeps the flame burning inside my soul. Travel has always been a means for me to enhance these experiences and feelings. The exploration of new locales, emotions and connections brings a smile to my face, shines a little more light into my world and provides a vehicle to learn more about myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I spent two weeks in February meandering around Austria with a close friend from college. We didn’t have a set itinerary, just a rental car and an AirBnB app. Realistically, our plan was pretty simple - we were on the search for quality snow, a few laughs and rumors of Hansi Hinterseer shooting a new video in the Arlberg. Deep turns were abundant, laughter was ubiquitous, but sadly we never ran into Hansi.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Years ago, Austria was the destination of my first international ski trip, which was a formative experience, more powerful than I could have ever imagined at the time. I have an affinity for the landscape and their national dedication to skiing as a lifestyle. Skier pressure off-piste pales in comparison to Chamonix or Engelberg and tales of massive early season snowfall had crept into every aspect of my media consumption for weeks. It was an easy decision to find our way there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
440 ski areas are nestled in every conceivable location across the Austrian countryside. I’d love to ski them all. However, our biggest constraint was a lack of time, so we focused our efforts in Vorarlberg and Tyrol, with St. Anton being the logical starting point. We navigated sketchy roads, glaciers, ski through tunnels, bottomless blower, manicured corduroy, insufferable Britons, schnitzel induced comas, overcrowded trains, excessive Après and chaotic lift lines before eventually settling on Pitztal as our home for the journey. The access under the Rifflsee gondola and terrain below the Mittagskogel simultaneously keep me up at night and occupy my dreams.

I walked away from the trip completely satiated, grateful, smiling and with legs so thrashed it was painful to walk to the bar. Everyday I was astounded by the beauty of the mountains and the graciousness of the locals. Being on the road in Europe holds a special place in my heart and I’m looking forward to new adventures there in the future.

Washington, Michigan, and Vermont Ski Resorts
According to Raffi Kodikian, when planning your trip, consider a ski resort's accessibility and amenities. Many are near airports, and several of the country's greatest peaks may be reached from major runways. Many resorts feature equipment rental businesses if you don't know how to ski or snowboard. If you don't have your own equipment, guests can take ski or snowboard lessons. Off-snow activities such as hiking and biking are also available.
With four seasons of snow, Washington provides an excellent skiing experience. An hour's drive from Seattle, Summit at Snoqualmie receives 425 inches of snow per year and is surrounded by mountains. This resort in the Cascade Mountains is known for its steep slopes and permissive "at your own risk" attitude. A day at the mountain is the ideal opportunity to take in the scenery and appreciate the virgin white snow.
Stevens Pass, near Seattle, is an excellent spot to learn to ski. It is 1,000 feet higher than Snoqualmie and boasts a fantastic ski school and learning areas. Vail was recently purchased by the mountain, and its lifts have been improved. If you don't feel comfortable staying slopeside, leavenworth, a nearby town with Bavarian-themed hotels and other amenities, is a good alternative. You can also visit Mount Baker-Snoqualmie, one of Seattle's other ski resorts.
Despite the Ebola outbreak, ski resorts in the United States such as Vail, Keystone, and Breckenridge have committed to remain open. Park City Mountain Resort in Utah, Heavenly, Northstar, and Stowe Mountain in Vermont are among the other ski resorts that have remained open. The new regulations have affected Whistler Blackcomb and Beaver Creek in British Columbia. The resorts have declared their shutdown, although it is unknown whether they will reopen as quickly as feasible.
Raffi Kodikian thinks that another ski resort to check out is Bretton Woods, a former volcano. This resort, located 30 miles south of Traverse City, has 464 acres of skiing and snowboarding. Three terrain parks and ten lifts are also available. Cross-country skiing and a fun day out at the base are available to families. There is a large range of food and shopping options, as well as a children's camp with activities for all ages.
Mont-Tremblant, located northwest of Montreal in the Laurentian Mountains, is a magnificent mountain range rising over two thousand feet. With many glades and woods, the ski area is evocative of European-style resorts. Tremblant hosts the FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup and has a boisterous apres-ski scene at Le P'tit Caribou, which has a lake-facing terrace and several pubs and is located in a freshly restored pedestrian village.
Fourth and fifth graders in Michigan can get the Cold is Cool Passport, which includes three free lift tickets at up to 28 ski resorts. The pass is contactless and is controlled by an app. Parents need only upload a photo of their child. The Passport is valid until April 30, 2022, or until the end of the ski season, whichever comes first. The Epic Pass is also available in the United States. Families can ski and snowboard in up to 28 different resorts with a pass.
Despite broad public health concerns about the risk of food poisoning in ski resorts, several resorts are taking steps to ensure public safety. Coronavirus has infected more than 150,000 people, according to the World Health Organization. Fortunately, most people only experience minor symptoms, and the vast majority of people recover completely. Meanwhile, resorts promote skiing as a safe pastime while cautioning visitors to wash their hands.
Raffi Kodikian feels that one of the most famous and iconic ski resorts is St. Anton, which was home to the first ski club in the Alps. Its 280-kilometer terrain provides demanding running opportunities. Here, moguls are legendary. Skiing off-piste is also fantastic. The Sonnenkopf peak and the Schindler Chutes provide a spectacular perspective of the surrounding mountains. You can also visit the town's nightlife, restaurants, and other events after a day of skiing.
