🧙🏻 Trick or treat-- what's the writing trope or art technique you want to try someday, but you're still psyching yourself up for?

Hmmmm. Very good question!

As far as art goes, I've been wanting to try a somewhat more lineless/less cartoon-ish style, but I'm super intimidated by it because it would be totally reliant on shading/highlighting that I really don't do a lot of right now.

As far as writing--this isn't really a trope, so I'm not sure it counts, but there's a fic that's been rotating in my mind like a rotisserie chicken for a long while that I want to write, but it would end up being super long probably and I think to really pull it off I would have to be a lot more nuanced with a character that...isn't really my favorite.

There was a post going around a while back (fuck I wish I could remember whose it was) about wanting to see stories about Jedi returning to the Order when the war started rather than just stories about them leaving, and I've always thought that it would be a fantastic character and general meta study to explore a universe where Obi-Wan had decided to stay on Mandalore with Satine, but finds that he cannot sit idly by once the war breaks out and decides to don the robes again.

It would probably be end-game Codywan (bc I am who I am, and I'm very interested in the concept of the clones being very why the fuck are they sending us some fucking New Mandalorian Duke to be our general and eventually coming around, because it's Obi-Wan), but it would also be way too easy to fall into that nasty trope where the protag's current spouse is just an irredeemable bitch, especially since she isn't really my favorite character like I said, and I hate that trope, so writing that story would require me to be cognizant of what I was doing and how things were reading pretty much the entire time.

That said, I do also think it would be a very rewarding story if I was able to pull it off, so I probably will give it a try eventually. I'm just really intimidated by it lol.

Impromptu gaming shopping spree at Bay Shore's Blast From The Past. Last time I visited in November, they had a storewide 2-for-1 sale. Last weekend, they announced they're re-locating to another larger space, so everything (minus game consoles) was 50% off. I went as soon as I could, and purchased all I missed out on or simply deemed good games - just for collecting purposes. I also made a second visit on Saturday to grab what I overlooked before. No telling when Blast- will have another sale like this, but there's other titles I'm still on the hunt for. Enjoy the wasted youth.

I actually reread all of the murderbot books, they're good fun and I love an emotionally constipated robot.

13. What were your least favourite books of the year?

I think I really hated Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. I even posted about how much I disliked it. Meru by SB Divya wasn't great, I read Samir Okasha's Intro to Philosophy of Science text which was transphobic. I don't think I was impressed by J. Moufawad Paul's Communist Necessity, too polemic and not useful.

25. What reading goals do you have for next year?

To move on from non fiction I'm getting bored by instead of trying to force myself through it. And make notes. Also read more romance.

Darjeeling: Where does your Oc feel most like home?

Abby: Due to the absence of an actual home, Abby's concept of "a home" is a little bit more abstract. She's a traveler, She travels around the country trying to find resources and shelter because of the Cordis Die war (after black ops 2, you can read about it in Mason's Legacy!). So she doesn't have a place where she can call a home. So her home is the people she loves and trusts, her family. Her home is her family, Wherever David is, that's where Abby's home is.

Sparrow: Sparrow's home is the swiss small hometown where she was raised since she was two years old. Zermatt is the place that saw her grow up and where her closest family is. But I would say she truly feels like home when she climbs the mountains that are around Zermatt, especially Matterhorn. She knows those mountains like the back of her hand, and yeah although she loves to climb any kind of mountain around the world, nothing brings her that much joy than the mountains from her home.

Amara: Amara's home is a little bit more far away than Sparrow's or Abby's. Although she's starting to feel like home next to her girlfriend Sparrow, Amara's heart always travels to her Grandma's hometown in the Japanese countryside. Amara's mother was Japanese so it wasn't a surprise that Amara used to spend her childhood summers there. And every once in a while she visits her grandma (now Sparrow goes with her more often) and when she's in that small Japanese village, her expression changes, she feels so calm and happy, her worries and anxieties are washed away.

Oolong: How does your Oc decorate their Space?

Abby: Alright, so like I said Abby currently doesn't have a place where she can call an actual home. But before the war she had a room in her parents house. And I would say it would be pretty cozy. A classic bedroom of a teenager, with her bed, posters, plushies, desk and computer, maybe with a few plants and action figures displaced on the shelves, a ton of books and of course Abby's guitar hanging on the wall. I would also say her room is a little bit messy, she's not an organized person hahahaha!

Sparrow: Alright so Sparrow lives in a small swiss village in the middle of the mountains. So her home is an old house, with a really rustic and old style. A fireplace, an old couch, bohemian rugs, framed pictures everywhere, her climbing equipment would be scattered around the house, on the shelves would be pictures and things that she brought from the journeys around the world, Tibetan flags hanging from the walls and balcony... And now that Amara lives with her, there are a ton of plants and flowers, and during spring and summer her garden looks like an enchanted forest. Really cozy and rustic vibes. The house is a little bit messy but it's part of its charm.

Amara: So before Amara moved with Sparrow, she used to live in a small apartment in Hull (UK). It was a Small apartment, really cozy with a ton of plants. A LOT OF PLANTS. Amara is obsessed with plants and flowers, so it wasn't a surprise she had plants in every room. She had old furniture, rescued and restored that she found on the street, a lot of framed pictures, bookshelves, rugs and candles with different scents in every corner. I would say her apartment always smelled like lognum vitae and incense.

Summary:  No one liked being compared to someone else. Especially when you suspect that there was much more to your boyfriend's relationship with his ex partner than met the eye. But did it really matter? After all, you'd never be able to meet his expectations. Because you weren’t Dazai. No matter how much he compared you to him. 

Pairing: fem! Reader x Chuuya Nakahara 

Inspired by Raven’s special anon prompt: “Chuuya accidentally hurts the reader with something he said or done. And he realizes it only when he sees her hurt expression and when she runs away from the room? “

“ Goddamn it, you’re just as fucking bad with your bets as Dazai” 

The smile faded off your lips and twisted down into a frown. Your laughter which rang out together with the loud music of the arcade died down in your throat. All that was left behind was the obnoxious tune of the game you two had been playing for the past hour or so. The victory dance and loud screech on your screen and the ’you lose’ on Chuuya’s with an even louder melody which seemed to mock the ginger. Without your joy and laughter you could clearly hear it now; the frustrated growls of having lost yet another round of the game he swore he would kick your ass in. The musings at the fact that he was supposed to be better than you, the bitter one-line comparisons between the way you played the game and Dazai. 

It was always Dazai. Dazai would have made a different attack in that last second, and then Chuuya would have had you where he wanted you. Dazai would have missed that last shot and then Chuuya would have been able to– 

His quiet rant left a bitter taste in your mouth. You had only ever caught sight of the ex-mafia executive once as a new recruit  but now you seemed to constantly exist in his shadow. Dazai, who was supposedly only a mission partner, was someone your boyfriend compared you to. Dazai, the bastard who was no longer in the Port Mafia. Dazai who was so much smarter- he would have goddamn planned better for the mission and then there’d be no casualties. Dazai who’s reports were always short and straight to the point when delivered to Mori, while yours were always too long. Dazai this, Dazai that! 

Dazai wasn’t there- he had left of his own volition while you stayed and served and slaved. Fought for the Mafia- fought for Chuuya. Showered him in love, affection and care. And yet still, somehow, despite not being Dazai you lived in his shadows. 

 Whatever for? 

Suddenly, Chuuya’s firsts made contact against the dashboard of the arcade machine between you two- an action which caused several other patrons to inch away from you in visible fear. Normally you would have scolded Chuuya for his brash actions, now you merely glanced up at him in question. There were two tokens clutched in his fist- a frustrated demand for yet another rematch. “ Another time, this was just dumb luck, yeah! Final round and I’m gonna kick your pretty lil ass, sweets!” 

But you were not in the mood for games. 

You were bitter, angry in the way no one seemed to understand. On edge in a fashion that not even the cocktail beside you- or the alcohol in your system- could calm. You didn’t bother to plaster a fake smile on your lips as you slid off the slightly too high chair. Your heels made contact with the sticky arcade floor and you bitterly mused that Dazai would have likely moved with more grace than you had. No, he wouldn’t have needed to jump down; he was the perfect height to just slide off the stool with dignity. The thought made anger flare in your gut. Your eyes looked anywhere but at Chuuya. “ Another time, okay?  I realized I forgot something”

You caught sight of his surprised expression, the confused hurt look on his face as you turned on your heel. Of course you disappointed him; that’s all you seemed to do. Unlike Dazai who– 

You cut your trail of thoughts off and hurried out. You did not wait for his reply, did not look back at him as you stumbled out of the arcade room. Past the pool tables, pushed through the sweaty tipsy queue of other patrons who waited to order their up-tenth drink and then out into the chilly evening air. Your feet carried you faster and faster for every second, until you turned down unfamiliar streets which lead you away from Port Mafia territory. That lead you further and further away from Chuuya. 

But at that moment you did not care. Because why should you? Why had you even bothered trying in the first place? Why had you put effort into getting to know Chuuya? Why had you bothered trying to share your skills and passions when all you were to him was nothing but a replacement? A replacement for the partner who left Chuuya behind. 

A man you would never be able to surpass, and so you were doomed to forever reside in his shadows. Because no matter how hard you tried, you would never be Dazai.

The "English or continental" debate is problematic and ultimately detrimental to the community.

Every time I see one of these "are you one or the other" posts, polls, tweets (Xcreets?), blogs, vlogs, whatevers, I get so annoyed. Undies fully twisted.

So indulge me and let's get into this.

First things first:

This is not an attack on pickers or throwers specifically. Any knitting style is valid. If the end result is even, non-twisted stitches that you enjoyed putting together, you're doing it right.

That said, I have 3 major gripes with the concept of "English vs continental" knitting:

1. The terminology. The terms "English" and "continental" were coined during WWII, as continental is actually German and the English were (rightly, at the time) uncomfortable doing anything the German way, or admitting that that way could be more efficient.

As we're about 80 years removed from the war, it might be time to accept that neither is objectively better and that German isn't a dirty word. We can, and should, use English and German, or throwing and picking respectively.

2. It's exclusionary to new knitters. The whole picking vs throwing discussion has made it so that new knitters don't know there are other options. If you're new to knitting, you get the impression that these are the only two options and if you can't do either, you can't knit.

Not to mention that the overwhelming majority of patterns and instructional videos are written or made exclusively for English or German methods. Which means if you want or need to use a different style, you need the additional step and skill of translating the pattern to fit your method. This requires a certain level of understanding of the underlying techniques that new knitters don't have. (Which is why I prefer charts, but that's a whole different rant.)

3. It's exclusionary to experienced knitters who don't pick or throw. The term continental for specifically German knitting dismisses all the other non-German European styles.

An incomplete list:

Eastern, or Russian, where you purl clockwise instead of counterclockwise, mounting the stitch backwards and knitting through the back loop on the right side. Creates the same stitch, but can be so much smoother to execute. Also very useful if you're doing rows of YO, ssk, as it eliminates the need to reorient the stitches before knitting them together.

Norwegian, where you purl without the need to bring the yarn fully forward. This is hard to describe in words, so I highly recommend googling for a video on Norwegian purls. It's a game changer for rib or seed stitch.

Portuguese, where you tension the yarn at the front of the work, looping it over your neck or through a pin. My personal preferred main method. Super helpful for those of us who lack finger strength to comfortably tension at the back. Makes purling a breeze.

Irish or lever knitting. Done with straight needles and (mostly) one-handed. Extremely helpful for people with disabilities. Also one of the fastest methods. You should check out videos on this, the speed is magical.

Flicking (not exactly regional), which is right handed but instead of throwing, you move the right needle to grab the yarn. Also difficult to explain, so check out some videos on this, too. Its a very quick method with minimal wrist movement. If you have the finger strength for tensioning it's worth practicing this, as it's so quick.

All of these are valid techniques, most of them are from continental Europe, none of them are included in the question "English or continental?".

And all of the above doesn't even get into the non-western, non-English, non-European styles there must be around the world, that I can't find through Google, because the English speaking world only uses the above mentioned methods.

Also, knitters that use other methods than picking or throwing are wildly underrepresented in the community, giving the knitting scene a culturally very white, western European image. Knitting could be a far more inclusive hobby if we'd embrace all styles.

In short, we need to change the question to "tell me about your technique" and learn from each other. Combining multiple methods (I use 3 or 4 interchangeably, depending on the pattern) can increase efficiency and enjoyment. And if you're struggling in any way, there might be a technique out there that better suits your needs. Asking about English vs continental isn't going to provide that information.

So tell me about your technique, especially if you use or know of any knitting methods that aren't western or European, I would LOVE to hear about that. Let's share and celebrate all the ways we knit.

SSK Hunger Games AU

So, I wanted to rant more about this AU so bear with me

Chuuya and Dazai are both District 12, duh

Chuuya's older brother, Verlaine, is the district's only victor. His games changed him completely. He started speding all his time in the Capitol and barely coming back to 12 apart from the days before the reaping, to get the tributes he would have to mentor.

In his absence, Chuuya uses the money and privilege to help out the Sheep, the local gang of orphans.

That is until Chuuya is 15 and the 43th Hunger Games start.

Shirase is reaped and, of course, Chuuya volunteers for him.

Dazai is the other tribute.

Chuuya doesn't know Dazai but Dazai didn know of Chuuya because of his brother.

Now, Verlaine is furious with Chuuya for volunteering and a lot of conflict ensues because now he's gonna have to mentor him.

Chuuya and him have a huge fight because demands no special treatment from his brother here, it wouldn't be fair if he won just because Dazai didn't get enough training.

This puts the boys againts each other, because Dazai doesn't needs anyone's pity.

Also, Kouyou is Effie here, forgot to mention (i think both chuuya's sibling figures should get to mentor him sdfsd)

Anyway, they arrive to the Capitol and the shit show begins.

Mori is President Snow, duh, and I think Seneca Crane should be Sigma hehehe

I'm also thinking that the Flags are in this games, as well as oda, because I want both of them to suffer

Anyway, we get to the interview and Dazai delivers the crush bomb and Chuuya is so pissed at him!!!! Like, until this point, they have barely interacted with each other and they don't get on well so, what the hell? And Dazai is mad too because he just did Chuuya a huge favour, making him desirable despite all his anger issues, he should thank him for it!

After all, Dazai doesn't plan to survive the hunger games, there's nothing for him to come back to. But Dazai sees that Chuuya has his brother and the Sheep and, if someone is gonna survive this, it better be him. So, that's why he delivers the crush bomb on the interview asdfhsdfh

So, we get to the arena, and I'm thinking is a slumb, kinda like Subarachi City

So, they get there, and we have different groups: dazai and chuuya separate. Chuuya joins the Flags and Dazai wanders alone until he teams up with Oda.

You know the rest, more or less, the flags and oda die (oda is so rue coded btw) and dazai and chuuya turn to each other to survive.

I think Dazai injures his eye in the arena, and gets the bandages over the eye, and I think Chuuya should end up deaf on one ear.

Anyway, they reach the end of the games and the berries happen.

I think that Dazai did plan to eat the berries, because he didn't want to go on, especially after oda, but Chuuya stopped him in time.

Sigma doesn't die here though, I think the resistence whisks him away hehehe

For some background on the designs for some of the vehicles because I never talked about them Sakuya, Lyrica, Medicine, and Komachi's vehicles were made by a friend of mine who wanted to volunteer designs for me to use, which I later refined to the designs I used. Sakuya's I specifically colored after DIO from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Stardust Crusaders due to haha funny jojoke Youmu's car is modeled after the Fiat 500, famously used by Lupin the Third in the eponymous anime series and extremely obvious because Youmu's ghost part is wearing Jigen's hat On the same inspiration, Yuuka's car is a yellow Mercedes Benz SSK 1929 also used by Lupin the Third in the 1971 anime. Reisen's motorcycle is based on a 1984 Honda Goldwing model I found with built in gatling guns because I thought it looked cool and is how I felt Reisen was like when I played Touhou 8 Mima's (and to an extension, Cirno's) is a Ferrari 321B, which was used in the first episode of Lupin the Third 1971 anime (which is also the main inspiration for that entire video's premise(I really like Lupin III)) The numbers on the race cars are a double reference, being that the number 9 is referencing this being the 9th Touhou game and 3 referencing Phantasmagoria of Dim.Dream, alongside the 3 being that the entire video is just a giant Lupin III reference. Eiki's I just made something up on the spot because I was struggling to think on what to use so I just drew a box with wheels and rolled with it because it was easy to draw and I could make a joke about her storing hot dogs inside the trunk of it Cirno starts with a Mario Kart kart at the start because I thought it was funny Anyways my favorites are Weed Killer and Sanzu Rider thank you for making these!! Why do you believe that sskk are gonna defeat fyodor when I'm pretty sure they've never solved a conflict on their own before.

In the guild arc they defeated francsis but kyoka crashing the mobby dick into the see is what saved the city. In s3 they defeated the rock dude but the rest of the pm and Ada are the ones who stopped the virus ability user and in dead apple they defeated the main guy with kyoka . Not to mention that only time they did fight completely alone aktugawa hit the bucket (well not really but yk) and well yes they are stratigic they def can't outsmart fyodor.......bc yk it's fyodor

(oh BTW how many more chapters do you think it's gonna take for the Manga to get to the last scene in the anime)

i have never been under the impression that atsushi and akutagawa's thematic arcs are to isolate unto themselves, or that fyodor needs to be defeated, or that the narrative supports resolving alienation through alienation. i think perhaps you mistook my comparing ssk and sskk's structural tag team for a lack of object permeance re: every other character, although deciding based on even that premise that i believe "defeating fyodor" could ever happen by sskk "solving it on their own" is a little contrived. I'd like to gently suggest that the two climaxes i was referring to are themselves happening in relation to and on reliance on the other, which is why it's meaningful as a pattern. like, in go, tesuji are used in tsumego situations in order to obtain sente, and, besides, yose is the end game, which only exists where there is a game.

anyway. I think I'd recommend going through my various bsd tags if you want my commentary on bsd's overarching themes and narrative culmination. Antonia received radio silence from Eva for dumping her for her cousin, Francisco, from 1919 to 1921.

With Diosdado and Lourdes, they were in a military camp or wherever they were sent to, so it looked like Lourdes was just chaperoning them even if Panch Villa had like 70 wives at the time.

Gloria is invited to gatherings with the handful of people who know whats going on, they like her so they won't introduce her to the other members of the Riley Clan nor Jack's sister-in-law and Gina.
