Putting a message i sent earlier under a read more, it has some thoughts ive expressed before tho. ES, of course

My thoughts as an EichiP... i view ! and !! as different stories in the way they're approached tbh, what i fell in love with enstars for was the character driven storytelling of one event seen through different perspectives, where you see the antagonist in one perspective become a protagonist in another story and can empathize with the entire cast like this. I fell in love with eichi's story of second chances, getting what you want and regretting your actions in the process, redemption, desperation, overcoming fate and asserting one's self into the story, saving a school in a dying industry that saved your life by giving you a dream; i consider it an arc fulfilling to the reader at the end of ! era. But we still had to continue... and it's not like we didnt get inklings of eichi's dreams of idol utopia, the idol soldier idea goes back to main story 1, but !! loses the charm of the original series through expanding the worldbuilding so much and shifting to a plot driven story that opens 10 cans of worms instead of offering resolutions. There's not really room to breathe if the stakes just keep getting higher and higher...

As for the colonisation plotline, it's been here since the beginning of ES2. The SS arc makes it obvious, but i remember even before, the talks about ES taking over from local businesses, trying to be seen as the standard, it was always the direction ensemble square as an institution would take. But the "antagonist in one story, protagonist in another" approach doesnt work anymore with such subjects. The guys responsible for this are your coworkers you share dorms with. I read the stories but cant empathize anymore, so i've been feeling disconnected from eichi for a while. I see enstars with eichi at its core but i didnt care for his center event, i read it, didnt like the ending, and overall felt off. Eichi becoming the villain of ! to attone for the war kind of loses significance if a year later he is a cartoon villain idol colonialist you can't even sympathize with anymore because of the magnitude of events. However i do think !! has done good things for some characters pushing them further or developing them in a way ! didnt. But for others...

I also have my issues with sci fi elements becoming the norm, even taken metaphorically or as hyperboles, when one of the central themes i love about enstars is humanity. Then again, i am a war era fan that relied on manipulating human desires and perceptions, and the fact that there were no monsters or gods, just humans framed as such, playing on people's fears and beliefs, it's a bit jarring to me to have them introduce AIs forming from escaped comatose brains (im minimizing the switch climax rn, i didnt even hate it as a whole, just this resolution im unhappy with)

It also feels like we've lost some of the meta aspects of the writing i liked, a certain awareness of being characters in a story and there being an audience. But im still struggling to word my thoughts on this matter. I felt it present in main story 2, even if it annoyed me at parts in its obviousness ("good thing we're not protagonists, no one would want to read about us" youre right aira you are not interesting to me. And yet i'll read your story to try and empathize nevertheless. I have other thoughts on aira too, perhaps for another time). I wish we explored a bit more what it means to no longer be the central protagonist, from trickstar's perspective...and brought back the successors topic. But i havent read every ts story yet so i'd be foolish to complain before really making sure i've checked everything. To me ! ended satisfyingly with room left for elaborations and imagination, but i dont feel like !!'s ending is really ending anything at all. Not necessarily bad since it's not like the game is shutting down, but overwhelming worldbuilding wise while underwhelming character wise...

Let's see... im not sure how to end this. Just a bit of a stream of consciousness as a ! fan who still loves enstars despite my critiques. Mainly, well, no one's gonna take away the stories that already exist that i do love and impacted my life greatly. And i do think !! had some really good things too it brought, or at least stories i hold dear too. Change is scary and i don't think it's always for the best, but it's also fun to see where it goes next...

i think the thing that bugs me most about the Discourse™ surrounding 3H is that it is just kind of pointless, and i don't mean that in the "it's pointless to discuss video game stories way" because it isn't! it isn't pointless to do that!

it's pointless because 3/4 routes in the game end with Byleth in a position of absolute power and authority over the entire continent of Fodlan, and therefore has the ability to institute whatever changes they damn well please, backed up the god-like ability to reverse time itself. Being the Archbishop of the Church with the ear of the King in AM, and simply just actually being the Ruler of United Fodlan in VW/SS, Byleth will pretty much always end the game as an enlightened despot. Byleth is, also, a blank slate self-insert, and while they do have some semblance of a personality in their various dialogues and scenes, their actual political beliefs are pretty much up to player interpretation, hence the reason you can even choose between the 4 paths in the first place.

in essence, it makes it very easy for the player to say "well Byleth will simply fix everything" after the credits roll regardless of which path you chose. Especially considering that all their students, who they most likely have very good relationships with, are liable to lend Byleth their political support. Not getting into characters like Sylvain who were already looking to institute change and reform in the areas they had direct control over.

To that end, the game does kind of undermine itself and the routes end up being more about who you want to live more rather than any actual ideological conflict no matter how much the game tries to frame it as the latter. if you agree with Edelgard's motivations but simply like Dimitri, Rhea or Claude more as characters, than there's no reason to really side with her since the player is actively put in a position where it's easy to imagine that after the credits roll Byleth simply does institute the changes that Edelgard seeks in a way that doesn't involve the death of their blorbos/continent-spanning war.

and I think this kind of ends up a factor in why there's a lot of undeserved vitriol thrown Edelgard's way. People see Byleth be given this absolute power, with the support of some of the most powerful noble houses of the land, and they imagine whatever kind of utopia they think Byleth could build with that power, and get retroactively mad at Edelgard. Never-mind that Byleth's ascendancy is only really possible specifically because of Edelgard's war, among numerous other different factors that led to it.

The real sort of funny thing is that the debate is also pointless in another way: Edelgard pretty much always accomplishes the objectives she sought out regardless of which route you chose. In all 4 routes Fodlan is unified. The Agarthans are either completely destroyed (VW) or majorly set back (AM/SS). Huge social reform is coming all across Fodlan, mostly of the variety that she wanted (yes, even in AM, I need to remind people that Dimitri's dad literally got killed for being "too radical" for the Faerghus nobility, not to mention that Dimitri is literally said to institute a new form of government in his solo ending)

“To put it even more precisely; it is a ceremony to select Special Idols who are to take flight around the world henceforth.”

Mao: Special idols, huh…?

Tsukasa: The SS was also based upon the premise of selecting the greatest Idols in Japan and the like, but a statement like that is quite nebulous, isn’t it?

Nice: “Let us start with the premise behind this all.”

“The company you belong to, ES, has essentially conquered the entire country’s idol industry through SS, taking hold of it and solidifying its position.”

“This is difficult to say from my position, but I shall say it as a matter of courtesy.”

“The company I work for, Thunderbolt, the largest entertainment company in the world, will put a halt to this.”

Esu: By the way, apparently NiceP is a general producer in Thunderbolt’s entertainment department.

Subaru: How high up the ranks is a general producer? You mean he’s not the president or anything?

Esu: It seems that the position of president, or the chief executive officer for that matter belongs to someone else entirely. But he’s sorta like the on-site chief executive?

I dunno if this is a metaphor that works well, but… like how there are kings that command politics and popes that command religion and beliefs, NiceP is like the commander-in-chief that actively oversees on-site activities.

Subaru: …Which is how high up the ranks?

Esu: I dunno, but I think he’s among Thunderbolt’s top five higher-ups!

Seems like Thunderbolt itself was founded by a relative of NiceP’s, and that’s where his name “Nice Arneb Thunder” comes from.

Fuyume: Actually, Esu, why do you know so much about old man Nice anyways? Do you like him or something?

Esu: I’m not like you, you know… No, it’s just that he said something about himself like that when I met him before, okay?

Fuyume: He sure loves to talk about himself, doesn’t he.

Esu: Yup, that trait of his resembles you. That’s why I dislike it.

Fuyume: Fufu. It’s okay. Yume is the world’s one and only Yume.

No matter how much Yume is imitated, they are nothing but fakes in the end.

Esu: I wouldn’t be able to stand it if there were more than one of your nasty personalities.

Nice: “The founder of Thunderbolt—my great grandfather—came to the United States at a young age and gradually expanded his influence primarily in the entertainment music market throughout the West.”

“The idol industry had been in decline up until recently in Japan, leaving no commercial opportunity despite our special affinity for it.”

“Fetters of all kinds, with plenty of troubles and evils to spare… Such things were prevalent in the entertainment industry of the past, you could say it left us no room to enter.”

Atlantis - Below the surface chapter 2

Eichi: It's called Project-ATLANTIS.

Also known as PA. It's a colonization project that ES, which now has its sights set on national domination, put into motion after SS.

Tori: Colonization?

Eichi: Yuzuru, Tori... What do you suppose SS is in the first place?

Yuzuru: It is a historic annual idol festival with a long-standing tradition—It is the largest, most important festival in the idol industry.

... Is how I would answer—But I doubt that you'll be satisfied with such a generic textbook response, correct?

Eichi: Yes. I'm not asking for a formal definition of SS, but rather about its impact on the industry.

Yuzuru: Can you give him an answer, Bocchama?

Tori: Eep! D-Don't put me on the spot like that?! Rather, you should be concerned with demonstrating your worth in front of your master!

Hmm. The SS that was held a few days ago was unprecedentedly large-scale, wasn't it?

It spanned the whole country, and we were able to get local and underground idols to actively participate. Thanks to that, the total number of participating idols was higher than ever before.

But, as a result, almost no local idols made it past the qualifying rounds. The final round was completely monopolized by ES, or more accurately, by Yumenosaki.

Yuzuru: Yes. Some local idols made brief appearances in collaboration with Mikejima-sama. But they were the exception.

Eichi: That's right... SS was held with the pretense of an energizing collaboration with local idols all across the country.

In reality, however, it turned out to be more of a farce that only served to flaunt the strength and authority of ES, which in many ways has become the center of the country.

Ultimately, you can say that was ES's intent all along.

The local idols were mere foils—nothing more than casualties positioned to highlight our—the "main idols'"—brilliance.

Naturally, the local idols found this dissatisfying.

The most radical among them have formed what one might call an anti-ES organization, and are now rioting across the country.

Project-ATLANTIS is one measure with which to pacify these hostile anti-ES forces gathered in such places.

Yuzuru: This is quite the belated response.

Eichi: It's certainly better than doing nothing.

When ES was first established, it was falsely advertised as a "utopia for all idols." For that reason, those who did not directly benefit became quite dissatisfied.

ES was supposed to be an ideal world where "all idols" are able to shine. Then, if we really are idols, why can't we shine?

Yuzuru: It's a natural question and a natural complaint.

Eichi: Fufu. In my opinion, people just navely put their faith in ES' exaggerated advertising

Anyway, if this was the Sengoku period, it would be standard practice to suppress such criminal forces with military power.

Tori: I-Isn't it kind of mean to call them criminals...?

Eichi: I consider it an appropiate expression. ES is a nation, and the forces that oppose it are nothing more than bandits and pirates.

However, although ES continues to make strides like Oda Nobunaga, we still haven't conquered the entire country like Tokugawa Ieyasu (*).

Yuzuru: I think that's a good analogy.

Eichi: Thank you. Right now, ES is in the era of Oda Nobunaga. More precisely, around the time that the anti-Nobunaga network (**) was established.

Yuzuru: I see. That makes it easy to understand.

Tori: Er, I'm sorry, but I don't really get it.

Eichi: You studied history in school, right?

Fools learn from experience; wise men learn from history. Be sure to take your studies seriously while you still have the chance, Tori.

Because, once you grow up, you'll have no choice but to learn things on your own.

Tori: Yeah~ I know this is gonna sound like an excuse... but I haven't been able to study much at school lately.

Eichi: Is something happening at Yumenosaki?

I entrusted all matters over there to Mao, my successor. I don't think it's appropriate for graduates to intervene, so I've generally been staying away.

Yuzuru: Fufu. At present, Yumenosaki Academy is holding an election to determine the next student council president.

Bocchama is running for the student council presidency as well, of course.

Combined with idol work, this is too many irons in the fire. As such, this is a very busy point in time.

Eichi: The student council elections? Huh, this is the first time they've been properly carried out.

We—or rather, mainly Keito—created a model for the student council and then passed it down to Mao, who inherited it.

Tori: As the new president, Isara said that we should actually hold an election.

He said, "I could appoint you, but I don't have much authority, so it'd seem really forced."

If I win the election properly, then I'll be able to attain that kind of authority.

Eichi: That sounds really modern. And it feels like a natural progression.

I like Mao's way of thinking. He understands the limitations of his position—I mean that in a good way.

(*) Eichi is referring to the reunification of Japan at the end of the Sengoku Period (1467-1600). Oda Nobunaga was a feudal lord who raised war against different clans during one of the most tumultous eras of conflict in Japan. Oda set the stage for the reunification of Japan, which was achieved later by Hideyoshi and Ieyasu—the latter becoming the ruler during the beginning of a peaceful period in Japan that lasted until the arrival of Perry and the US Navy.

(**) At the end of the Sengoku era, a group of forces led by Shogun Yoshiaki Ashikaga formed an alliance to rebel against Nobunaga and his allies. The conflict ended with the defeat of the anti-Nobunaga alliance and the expulsion of Yoshiaki from Kyoto.

Atlantis - Underwater: Chapter 2

Eichi: There is something called “Project-ATLANTIS”.

It’s referred to as “PA” in short and it’s ES’ colonisation plan in an attempt to achieve a steady national conquest after “SS”. 

Touri: Colonisation?

Eichi: Yuzuru, Touri. Tell me, what was “SS”?

Yuzuru: It’s the biggest festival in the idol industry that’s held once a year – it’s both traditional and boasts a long history.

However, I suppose this sort of textbook-based answer would not satisfy you.

Eichi: Yeah. I’m not asking for “SS’” definition, but rather the impact created from it.

Yuzuru: Can you answer him, Young Master?

Touri: D–Don’t pass the conversation to me all of a sudden! You don’t have to make your master look good!

Umm. “SS” was a big and unprecedented event, right?

It involved the entire nation, and the regional idols and underground idols who were constantly overlooked even took part. Thanks to that, the number of idols who attended hit a new record.

But as a result, there weren’t many regional idols who made it past the Qualifying Rounds. It was ES, or rather, the Yumenosaki idols who monopolised the “SS” Main Stage.

Yuzuru: Indeed. There were several regional idols who showed their faces thanks to Mikejima-sama’s help. That was an exception, though.

Eichi: That’s right. “SS” was held under the pretence that all of the regional idols throughout the country would work together to create a fun festival.

But in reality, it ended in a farce in all sorts of senses. It only showed ES’ power and strength as it was situated in the centre of the country. 

That was probably ES’ intentions from the very start.

The regional idols were the underdogs – they were simply there to strengthen the light emitting from the “central idols”.

Naturally, the ones who were dissatisfied with that were the regional idols.

The extremists amongst them have formed something akin to an anti-ES organisation and are going on a rampage throughout the country.

“Project-ATLANTIS” is one of the measures put in place to quell ES’ antagonistic powers in each of the regions.

Yuzuru: Those are measures taken in haste.

Eichi: It’s better than doing nothing.

Thanks to ES making their motto “a utopia for all idols” and whatnot, there is dissatisfaction arising from the groups that wish to be bestowed with those blessings in reality.

ES was supposed to be a utopia where “every idol” could shine. Which meant that if they couldn’t shine, then they weren’t idols.

Yuzuru: It’s just doubt and just dissatisfaction.

Eichi: Hehe. In my eyes, I think they’re innocently believing ES’ deceptive advertising a bit too much, though.

In any case, if this was the warring states period, it would be standard practice to cut off those anti-social forces.

Touri: I–Isn’t it cruel to call them that…?

Eichi: I think it’s rather fitting. ES is a nation – those powers who bear a grudge are simply not the same as bandits or pirates.

Even so, ES is continuing to steadily advance just like Oda Nobunaga, but law and order have yet to be restored as that of Tokugawa Ieyasu.

Yuzuru: I think that is a fitting analogy.

Eichi: Thank you. Right now, ES is in its Oda Nobunaga phase. To be precise, it would be the time when Nobunaga is under siege.

Yuzuru: I see. That’s easy to understand.

Touri: Um, sorry, but I think I’m having difficulty understanding.

Eichi: You learnt this in your history classes, didn’t you?

Fools learn from experience while sages learn from history. You should make sure you’re paying attention to class during your schooltime, Touri.

Once you’re an adult, you’ll have no choice but to learn things by working hard on your own.

Touri: Uuu~ This might sound like an excuse but we’re not even studying much now at school.

Eichi: What’s happening at Yumenosaki?

I left everything to Mao when I graduated. I figured it wouldn’t be good for the alumni to meddle too much, so I’ve more or less ignored what’s happened there, though.

Yuzuru: Hehe. Currently, a student council president election is underway at Yumenosaki.

Naturally, the young master is running for the position.

It’s difficult to balance work as the student council president and an idol, so it appears he’s having a rather busy time preparing for it.

Eichi: A student council president election, huh. It’s the first time that’s ever happened.

We – I mean, Keito was the one who set up the basis for the student council, and it continues to exist right now due to Mao taking over that.

Touri: It was New President Isara who said we should hold an election.

He said, “I wouldn’t mind choosing someone but I don’t have much authority, so it’ll just look like I forced someone to do it.”

He also added that the person should win the election to gain his own authority.

Eichi: A modernistic and natural approach – I like it. 

I also like how it’s a very Mao thing to say. He knows where he stands, in a good sense.

read the news this morning that territory battle, in addition to being removed from its original performai games, would be removed from phigros as well in the coming update. looking to make the most of it before it's removed though, i tried to phi all its difficulties and got the HD down while half asleep, as well as giving the AT some attempts to see if i could somehow do it!! i couldn't do it consistently, but i did way better than i thought i would... hmm.... could i actually get this?

between and after those plays, i also grinded out some more PMs in arcaea to deplete my stamina and also get in some more progress in my Quest for Perfection . got FTR PMs #99 and #101 on Lights of Muse (FTR-8+, MAX-9) and MERLIN (FTR-8+, MAX-6) respectively, but obviously i had to do something special to commemorate my 100th FTR PM. so what did i do exactly? why, i PM'ED MEDUSA (FTR-10) ON THE SPOT!!!! MAX-36 PURE MEMORY, 10 PM #2, AND FTR PM #100!!!!!!

warmup was over after that, and it was time to go through with my day plans to meet a friend at the (other) arcade and play some pump!! a lot of pump!!! but since all i had played earlier were mobile rhythm games and i needed to warm up my legs first, i obviously started with som- naw jk LOL i went IMMEDIATELY for the 20s and claimed allll the clears i could get LMFAO (and after clearing these two in particular (86 S20 SS+ and Papasito S20 AA+), i got Advanced Lv.1 title!!! finally!!! no more intermediate bronze!!!!)

so with my brand new, shiny silver title in hand and a bunch more 20s to clear until i reached Advanced Lv.3 to take on 21s, i pushed on and got a bunch more even cooler S20/D20 clears!!! really good session overall, buuuut it was back home after that to unwind and relax... but i also played some Rotaeno on the bus to make extra story progress and cleared Inverted World (IV Lv.13)!

a little more arcaea progress: Ascent (FTR-9+, MAX-22) as FTR PM #102, and a hard clear on World Ender (BYD-11) on my third try (coulda been my first...) as part of Axiom of the End!!!

ending it off with a bit more rotaeno: got an AP on Journey With You (IV Lv.11) and a really good sightread S+ on Rush E (IV Lv.12+)!!

In the bustling starport of New Glasgow, under the shadow of looming starships and neon signs, a young woman named Elara served as the chief engineer aboard the SS Kelman, a trade vessel named after the legendary explorer James Kelman. Elara, known for her brilliant mind and distinctive style—marked by a braided blonde hair and a steampunk-inspired outfit complete with intricate gear motifs—was a standout in the sea of uniformed mechanics and pilots.

The SS Kelman was docked for repairs, and Elara was busy with the final adjustments to the engine’s quantum flux regulator when she stumbled upon a hidden compartment beneath the main console. Inside, she found a holographic map encoded with coordinates unknown to the Union’s navigation databases. Curiosity piqued, Elara decided to follow the mysterious trail, suspecting it might lead to one of the lost expeditions of James Kelman himself.

Without notifying her captain, Elara programmed the coordinates into the ship’s auto-pilot. As the SS Kelman slipped out of the starport, a series of alarms blared, and Elara realized that the ship was now on an irreversible course towards uncharted space. The navigation system locked and encrypted, Elara was left with no choice but to follow through on her impromptu adventure.

Days turned into weeks as the SS Kelman hurdled through star systems and nebulas, each more breathtaking than the last. Elara spent her time maintaining the ship, deciphering more of James Kelman’s notes hidden within the map, and dodging occasional space pirates attracted to her lone vessel.

Finally, the coordinates led Elara to a hidden planet cloaked by an advanced stealth field, clearly the work of a civilization far more advanced than any known to the Union. The planet was lush and teeming with life, untouched by human hands. It was here, Elara discovered, that James Kelman had founded a secret colony, designed to be a utopia away from the conflicts of the galaxy.

Elara was welcomed by the descendants of the original colonists, who showed her the technological marvels and harmonious lifestyle they had developed, all thanks to the guidance of their forefather, Kelman. As she learned about their society and helped them upgrade their systems with her own expertise, Elara realized she had found a new purpose.

She decided to stay, helping to bridge the gap between her old world and this new paradise. Elara transmitted the data and knowledge she had acquired back to the Union, ensuring that the legacy of James Kelman and the wonders of this hidden planet would no longer remain a secret, but a beacon of hope and peace in the cosmos.
