hi cami! hope youre doing well! id like to ask.. have you seen that pokemon zensho is now fully available in english? i only found out recently lol. you can find it at mangadex! if you have, what are your thoughts on it?
Hi there @soulsilvers I'm doing well thank you for asking! Yeah, I actually didn't know that they full translated Pokemon Zensho until I got this ask, so thank you for alerting me to this I appreciate it! So of course I had to read it all last night! Link here for anyone who wants to read it! It was so cute honestly. First Pokemon Concierge, now Pokemon Zensho making me cry and I'm here for it honestly. Like you said on discord, it definitely is very rushed at only 9 chapters. I definitely would've loved to see it have a few more chapters to explore more about Red and Blue's friendship (well here called Ash and Gary) and going through the league (I always feel like the elite four part of the Kanto story always seems to get the short end of the stick). Despite it's rushed nature, it does make up for it in being the most true-to-gameverse adaptation. But what I appreciated the most was the details that were added were very grounded. Like the problems the gym leaders were facing felt real. It was cool to see how Giovanni became the way he was because it has been hinted at that he's not always been the ruthless Team Rocket boss but something made him that way. I've grown to like Lt. Surge a lot over the years and I feel like his arc was really wholesome too. Many people criticize Kanto for it not being particularly story driven (which to each their own, some people like story drive gameplay some don't, groups are valid), but to say it's completely devoid of story is false. The theme of Gen 1 besides exploration is relationships. It's why the key driver is the rivalry (and strained friendship) between Red and Blue. The orphan Cubone, Agatha and Oak, even Mewtwo's existence plays on the concept of relations in a subtle way. Zensho takes this concept and runs with it throughout as Red travels through Kanto. Much like Pokespe, Pokemon Zensho does a good job at bringing smaller but notable NPCs into the fold and it was done in a way that was not overbearing (looking at Marvin from SwSh Pokespe taking Hop's spot). It was cool to see the SS Anne captain and Game Warden get some more screentime. Also props for this manga low key making non-binary Bill canon! I know some people who read it may not like this version of Red not being "badass" in that he does earn some of his badges without actually defeating the leaders but I think the way it's handled here was okay. I think part of Red's character is supposed to be how he puts caring for others first despite being so talented at battling and I think it's okay that there are adaptations that don't just fall into him being a legendary battler who sweeps everyone. Even though this is a retelling of Red's story I would say if I'm honest this was really Blue's story. Blue got a lot of focus in this manga and outside of Pokemon Generations we don't really get to see into Blue's mindset. I appreciated as you mentioned on discord, how despite everything it did still focus on the fact that Blue was still Red's friend despite everything. It's not something that's focused on a lot in gen 1 adaptations. And of course the rest of the Oak family gets some shine too. This is probably my favorite portrayal of Oak in that it retains some of his flaws but humanizes him too (although I wish they had devoted some time to his and Agatha's rivalry). And Daisy...even with her limited screen time very much still shone especially with her calling out Professor Oak for his harsh words towards Blue. And then of course the revelation of what happened to Blue and Daisy's parents. Give those kids (and this Professor Oak) a hug. This is definitely my favorite of the four Pokemon manga I've read thus far and if we ever got a short miniseries for the Gen 1 games again I would hope it would take more of the Zensho approach and be game accurate while still expanding on little lore details.

Tumblr media Tumblr media
We start off the gym with an evolution! congratulations, Beans! :D
Tumblr media
Misty battle, Lets Go!
Had a good fright, i forgot poison is weak to psychic and that Starmie is psychic type as well as water
Tumblr media
But we overcome! Badge two, in the BANK!
Tumblr media
Penny the Sandshrew
Level 8 - Level 9
Soooo, remember in the last post how Penny's Intro Screencap said "FNT"?
She met her end against aNOTHER GODDAMN SPEAROW I fuckin hate spearows right now, GOD. I was so looking forward to having a sandslash :(
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OK, well, with that disappointment, let's meet a new friend. Welcome, Chuck! Ill be honest, I dont think you'll see the outside of the box, but you are definitely a friend :)
Tumblr media
New Route, New Friend! :)
Ah weird, I wonder why all of the encounters are mons I already have?
Tumblr media
(Resident Alien Alan Tudyk Voice) SON OF A BITCH
Tumblr media Tumblr media
FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY WELCOME TO YOUR AWESOME NEW HIGH ATTACK POWER LIFE SASHIMI
Now I don't have to do the "start out/switch out" training method for Sashimi, because magikarp are so... Bad. and because I don't think it'll be possible for me to get the EXP share. Since, it's locked behind one of Oak's Aides/ requires 50 pokedex entries. I don't think I'll be able to get it at all, or not at least til late game.
Tumblr media
Arrived in Vermillion! now time to prepare for Lt. Surge in earnest.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So, since we no longer have Penny, I'm concerned about a ground type. Luckily, the Diglett Cave is right there, so I popped in, and we welcome Zero to the team! Welcome, Zero!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
New Route, new mon. The Missle is very tired. He is Eepy. (might be re named if I can actually catch a Snorlax, but Im not optimistic at that given my Pokeballs Only rule)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OK, readjusting team for Surge, since Beans is still good he should be pretty good backup for Zero, so we just kinda need to focus on training up Zero. which will be very easy, since hes already pretty close to on par with the rest of the team, and we still get to go on the SS Anne :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
..... I completely forgot about this in the original pokemon. Red and Blue- and then their successors- really did just. make some strange decisions as far as the ecology of the pokemon world. I dont think I remember anything actually being addressed about the implication of real world animals and pokemon, either. Theres a lot to unpack but lets just throw out the whole suitcase tbh
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Bienvenue, Power Bottoms. Luckily we happened to be on level par, I got worried for a second that I was underleveled.
(On a side note, I forgot how weird the Cut Master thing is, why the whole hell does the pc have to rub his back while hes hurling up in a trashcan. no pics cause I was so stunned i forgot to screencap lmao)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
YES! MULTIPLY, MY LITTLE HOTDOG FRIEND!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tune in next update for Lt. Surge!

Pokemon, Part 3
After I got to Vermilion, I went though the SS Anne in search of a swordmaster. The entire arc here is actually really fun. See, Cut, in Japanese, is Iai Cut - as in, your pokemon draws a sword while slashing to cut through trees blocking your path. This context makes the excursion actually cool. And what's more is that Cut is not a weak move by the standards of when you get it - at this level, you are still largely dealing with Power 30-ish moves, and this is Power 50. It's thus actually a very practical move - just nothing like the end-game techs.
Another fascinating aspect of Pokemon's design is how it interacts with trade mechanics. See, you CAN seek out a swordmaster to teach you the Iaijutsu Cut... Or you can seek out a friend who can pass the ability on to you. Pokemon Red is designed akin to a Metroidvania, where your new abilities are locked behind gym battles and HMs and open up further ways to explore. But there's a difference - it is possible to trade in Pokemon with these abilities instead of scouring the earth to find them. Thinking back, it seems like at least few seem to be intended to be shared - As a kid, I could not find Surf without outside help. But suppose you had 4 kids, meeting each other at school, and one of them figured out where Surf was - That person could trade in a pokemon with that HM, unlocking paths for their friends. This is interesting design.
My Beedrill, Musashi, was taught CUT and stored away to be traded. DUX, the outsider I acquired from an in-game trade, was also given CUT and is going to remain on my team for the foreseeable future. Because I have Go For The Eyes, the Ratata with Hyper Fang and Water Gun who can clear caves easily, and Zaftig the Nidoqueen (Who levelled up in the SS Anne to gain the 80-power Body Slam,) the next section of the game was real easy. Lt. Surge was a road bump, and MARCEL the Mr Mime guided me through Rock Tunnel. I also traded with a friend, exchanging the Magikarp I bought from a merchant in-game - Sashimi - for Pilot the Paras
Tumblr media
Paras took a little effort to raise up, but the enhanced XP from being an outsider enhanced this a lot. In exchange, Teal will get an early-game Magikarp which gains XP very fast - and thus should get a Gyarados, fast. I taught Pilot DIG, giving me a powerful attack on a pokemon that needs some help - and giving me a good navigational tool for caves and dungeons, allowing me to push forward more. My Geodude, Gargoyle, also evolved into a Graveller at last. Since I have Nidoqueen already, I think trading them away may be best. ...Surprisingly, DUX is actually amazing. He has a variety of status effect moves, gains XP VERY fast, and most impressively - He is one of the very few pokemon who learn Swords Dance naturally, normally requiring a TM. This is actually nuts, because Swords Dance is great. This one ability makes this a great pokemon in the context of Red and Blue as a single-player experience. Once I got through Rock Tunnel, and into Lavender Town, I fought the Rival there. Pilot opened the fight with a Stun Spore, and then I switched to DUX. After Sword Dancing, he entirely swept the enemy team with Iai Cuts - including defeating a Gyarados with one cut

Here's how my pokemon red nuzlocke went. (long)
For context, the original. Dated jokes in there.
The full rules that I used:
If a pokemon faints, it counts as death. You can't use them anymore.
You can only catch the first wild pokemon on each area. There's a bit of vagueness when it comes to consecutive routes or towns where you can get more than 1 pokemon.
You can get one extra level to your team per area. (This was added late) If new pokemon are too low level you can get them to whatever you highest is minus 10.
You can't catch a pokemon that you've already caught (unless they have different evolutions/forms, although it's not a thing in gen 1). If you have a Pidgey and next route the first pokemon is a Pidgey, you can give one extra level to your lowest level pokemon.
You can't buy any HP or status heals. Everything else is fine.
All gyms have to be done fully with no pokemon center visits. You go in, you either win or you die.
Starter, fossil, eeveelution and hitmons are random.
Legendaries and master ball are allowed if you want. (Never fought the birds or Mewtwo).
The goal is to beat the elite four and Gary.
---
Started with Squirtle. Got a Pidgey, Rattata and Weedle.
Rattata (Mike) missed and got critted as the first casualty.
Tumblr media
---
Beat Brock. Then I had the choice of Magikarp or a wild pokemon. Chose not to get the Magikarp. Wanted Jigglypuff but got a Spearow. My teams tend to have lots of flyers.
On Mount Moon I got a Zubat (love Crobat). Wanted an Ekans or Abra from the next routes but no luck, just the same pokemons I had. On the way to Bill Spearow (Rika) got critted by a Slowpoke with confusion. Terrifying.
Tumblr media
---
Looking back it was 2 routes together, so for my next one (blue) I'll get an extra chance to catch something and one extra level (my team is constantly underleveled save for 1 or 2 girls).
Kept going, ignoring Misty for now. At this point Pidgeotto and Wartortle were 20-21 and the rest where still behind trying to be useful (don't remember exactly, but 13-15 range).
Before Vermillion City I had two routes aswell. Not knowing this was a thing was a problem since my team felt way lower level than I expected. Got an Oddish!
Went to the route east of Vermillion. Magneton with thundershock almost kills several. Got an Ekans! On the tunnel first pokemon is a level 29 Dugtrio so Wartortle has to kill it before I get critted by dig.
SS Anne before I backtrack to get Misty and Pidgeotto (Pollo) gets critted by Gary's Raticate completely out of nowhere.
Tumblr media
---
He was not full HP but it was a massive miscalculation that cost his life and my strongest pokemon at the time.
After Misty I went east to prepare my team (Wartortle, Beedrill, Zubat, Ekans and Oddish) for Surge. Wanted a Voltorb but no luck, on the cave I got an Onix!
Get Surge with Onix's dig, pretty much a free gym. Go through the tunnel. A series of rea~~lly bad decisions and Ekans (Sanae) gets critted, Onix (Tenshi) gets oneshot critted by absorb from an underleveled Oddish (thought I could dig...) and our Oddish (Ahko) ALSO gets critted right before evolving. (<- I missplayed this part SO badly).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
At this point I had a team of 3 (Wartortle, Beedrill and Golbat) so I try to go west of Lavender see if we can get stronger before pokemon tower.
From this point I get almost no new wild pokemon (keep getting Spearow/Pidgey/Rattata/Oddish) so my team doesn't grow in size. Go to Celadon (I can pick Eevee or one of the prizes in the casino). Although Abra is kinda tempting, I love all my Eevee forms. Roll for it (it has to be random) and I get Flareon. Jolteon is my favourite and it would have been ok, Vaporeon would be a bit redundant since I have Wartortle.
Go west of Celadon (wanted Doduo) no luck. Go south of Lavender. All this just to be ready for pokemon tower. Can't lose any more pokemon after that blunder.
I fight Gary one more time. Gyarados uses HYDRO PUMP and crits. Golbat (Aoi) dies.
Tumblr media
---
Get a Gastly and finish up. How sad...
Get the pokeflute. Remember I haven't caught anything south of Lavender yet. Get Snorlax!
Next time for the part where you go to Fuchsia I'll check the number of routes so my levels and chances to catch new pokemon are higher. I thought that it was all a big route.
First new pokemon is a Ditto fighting our Beedrill. Run out of super balls and have to kill it. Doduo runs away on the safari zone. Everywhere else I keep getting previously caught pokemon.
Silph goes relatively ok, Gary manages to not kill anyone for once.
Fight every single trainer I can because I'm back to being very underleveled. On Koga's gym Beedrill (Pax) fails to oneshot an Hypno with twinneedle and gets critted by confusion. For Koga I send Blastoise (Aurora), set up +6 defense with withdraw but on Weezing I get CRITTED by selfdestruct.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
What a bloodbath. My team is now Flareon, Haunter and Snorlax. On Sabrina set up Flareon with +6 evasion double team and sweep with swift.
Go for one of the hitmons (chan this time) and go through the water south of Fuchsia. Eventually get a Goldeen (my surf pokemon now, very underleveled from fishing in Fuchsia), Tentacool and Slowpoke (Articuno island). Get to Cinnabar and catch a Ponyta and get Kabuto from the fossil.
Haunter at 50, Snorlax/Flareon at 40-high and Ponyta, Hitmonchan and Goldeen at 30-low. Blaine is quite easy but at this point my team is still pretty weak. Get some levels in the burned mansion and lose Hitmonchan (Miu) and Goldeen (Seiga) to Ponyta's crits. I didn't know they had such high attack stat. Get Kabutops at 40. Destroy Blaine.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
No more places to level up. Go Giovanni. Keep Haunter for him while everyone else deals with all the karatekas and cool trainers. Psychic is so OP in gen 1. Earthquake is scary but I outspeed everything but Dugtrio, luckily it doesn't use it.
Go fight Gary. Haunter's thunderbolt for Pidgeot, Snorlax will overpower and outheal Alakazam and then Flareon and Haunter will sweep the rest.
Victory Road goes well, try to catch Geodude and it selfdestructs...
---
Final grind. Haunter is 60, Flareon is 53 (1 more for flamethrower...) and Snorlax, Kabutops and Rapidash are 50 after using all rare candies I had.
---
Final check. Tentacool (Momo) and Slowpoke (Tomoko) are on the PC box. They can't really help at this point.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
---
Use all my TMs (or try to). Kabutops gets blizzard. Snorlax gets earthquake. Haunter gets mega drain. Toss everything out.
I got a full restore, a max potion and full heal. Ethers and elixers (sic) are plenty.
---
Lorelei: try to set up Flareon +6 evasion. Dewgong has rest. I can't outdamage it like this, I thought fire spin would do more (ice/water) but it says not effective... Swap Snorlax in. Body slam my way through her team. Lapras is strong. Paralize her. Blizzard hits hard. I rest and wake up with pokeflute. I just need one paralysis proc or a blizzard miss so I can finish her. Blizzard crits and Snorlax (Koharu) dies.
Tumblr media
---
Send Kabutops to finish this. Slash crits but doesn't kill. Pure terror. Blizzard CRITS us again. Kabutops (Shelly) dies.
Tumblr media
---
Realize that gen 1 does not have PP for enemy moves. Realize that we are dead if Haunter faints, since I used both heals on Lorelei already. Flareon and Rapidash will have to buy time if Haunter gets some status or negative stats at any point.
Bruno dies to mega drain on the Onixes (Onices?) and psychic on the Hitmons and Machamp.
Agatha is way more dangerous. Gengar tries confusion ray and hypnosis. Not getting hit by dream eater so pokeflute and psychic. Got hit by nightshade once. Golbat and Arbok aswell. Foe Haunter is weaker than us. Second Gengar falls aswell but get hit by nightshade again.
Lance. Thunderbolt on Gyarados. Mega drain on the Dragonairs, back to full HP. They use agility because it's psychic type. Aerodactyl falls to thunderbolt. Dragonite spams barrier too.
Haunter is 63, Flareon is hurt at 53 and Rapidash at 50.
Gary.
Send Haunter against foe Pidgeot. We use confuse ray and the animation plays. Right, the game overrides that setting for the final fight. Pidgeot hits herself. X precision. Wing attack hits. No crit. Still 70-75%, we'll top up on Rhydon. X special. Foe Pidgeot is glowing. Thunderbolt.
Alakazam. Right, she goes before Rhydon... A psychic crit will kill. Psybeam is ma~~~ybe survivable? Confuse ray. She uses reflect. Thunderbolt. She uses reflect again! Thunderbolt crit!
Rhydon dies to mega drain. Haunter is now full HP.
Gyarados dies to thunderbolt.
Arcanine. Confuse ray. Uses ember but no burn. Psychic hits but survives. Hits herself. Psychic again.
Venusaur... Confuse ray. Razor leaf crit. Haunter is poison type too, barely a scratch. Psychic once and it kills.
---
Haunter (Yuuna), Flareon (Hope) and Rapidash (RB Dash) are victorious!

Kanto region? 👀 its the home of Eevee (my favorite pokemon <3)
kanto is essentially the base form for this given…. kanto region. so because of that, it’s pretty straightforward. i’ve gotten some vague fankid ideas out (even if that one’s rooted in unova because New York lmao) but i’ll focus on canon death note characters.
i feel like light would be from celadon. because tokyo. his early childhood is probably the same: cop father, stereotypical pokemon mom, and sayu is still sayu. it only really changes when we get to his pokemon journey. out of the kanto starters, i think light would pick charmander because he did not have that monologue about wanting to fly for nothing. just pretend charizard can learn fly in red and blue. also ik i said he’d be a fairy specialist but that’s later so idgaf
thinking about L in traditional pokemon is a bit interesting because, realistically, him being the world’s greatest detective fits well in canon. it’s a bit of a given, especially with gen 4 onwards. he could be trying to dissemble team rocket in… some way like the officer on the ss anne in red and blue. i assume L and light would meet in the same way and travel together. now that i think about it, this could lead to all of the other regions a la looker and anabel in sun and moon. in terms of pokemon, he wouldn’t have a starter. i think he’d have one of the nidorans. idk which one but we’ll say female because Blue
finally, i’m gonna talk about misa. her role isn’t as concrete in kanto because contests weren’t a thing, but she would be another trainer who would run into light and help with the main story. maybe to try and get her bike back lmao. if we look at irl geography, she would be from johto. and um…… don’t ask me about the great pokemon war but i have thoughts. anyways she has bulbasaur as well as a cubone because she has a dead mother :)
i’ll design their teams eventually but for now this is what i have

My experience with (and review of) Pokemon Red.
As part of the entire gimmick of this page, I am replaying and ranking the pokemon games in order.
First, I did what any reasonable person would do and picked bulbasaur. I named it "SmartFridg" because the naming scheme for this run is fridge models and there was not enough space to write "Samsung Smart Fridge". After that, I instantly caught a pidgey, naming it "KFpkmnFPBEA". There comes a huge issue, being that there is no way to input numbers into usernames in gen 1, so I just substituted the numbers from "KF86FPBEA" with the Pk and Mn symbols. With that out of the way, I swept Brock with my bulbasaur, went to Mt. Moon, caught a geodude and named it "PFEpkmnKYNFS". I then proceeded to take the dome fossil (better than helix. fight me) and then sweep Misty with my ivysaur.
With the 2 pushovers out of the way, I caught a drowzee and named it "LFXSpkmnpkmnpkS", I beat Gary's ass, did the SS. Anne stuff, beat Gary's ass again, and then challenged Lt Surge. The Lt Surge fight was awful, It took me like 12 tries to get the rng for the gym puzzle (and then I swept Lt. Surge with my somewhat underleveled geodude because all of the fights in the early game are pushovers). After getting my rightfully earned Flash HM, I taught it to my drowzee because I couldnt be assed to catch something else to teach it to.
I then ventured through Rock Tunnel, where my geodude evolved into a graveler and I had to face the divine wrath of 1000 zubats.
I then fought Gary in Lavender town (not before completely forgetting to heal :3), wherein his first 2 pokemon fell to my graveler, every one of my pokemon except my still somewhat underleveled drowzee fell to his gyarados, and my underleveled drowzee earned a medal of honor for his brave service in sweeping the fuck out of 3 pokemon who were like 5 levels up on him each. This drowzee will never leave my team. Also I went up the tower forgetting I need the silph scope so it was kind of an embarassing walk back down.
Notably, after the lavender town fight, I did some grinding and evolved my drowzee into a hypno.
I then fought Erika in Celadon City. This fight was… also a pushover. It wasn't a clean sweep like the first 3 but it was pretty damn easy. Keep in mind I'm like 2 levels down on her pokemon and my team consists of 4 members and an oddish I caught to use cut. Using the TM i got from erika, I taught my ivysaur mega drain to replace it's vine whip.
I went to the celadon city department store. I tried to buy some great balls. but it turns out. my inventory is full??? I decided to use a rare candy to clear up a spot. I am really glad they removed the inventory space limit in future games.
I went to the game corner rocket hideout. All these collectible items and I'm struggling with the storage in my backpack. I know I can put my items in the pc but I was too lazy to do that. I used the thunder wave TM I got earlier on my hypno, and the dig TM i got earlier on my graveler. I got a double edge TM and used it on my pidgeotto. This seems closer to a battle of attrition, with how these rocket grunts manage to have 5 fodder pokemon at once. I oneshot them all but they know I'll eventually run out of PP.
I started the Giovanni fight. I won in 4 turns spamming dig with my graveler. Absolute joke of a boss fight. Graveler was only 1 level up on his pokemon too. I press the graveler button and I win.
With silph scope in hand, I re-enter the pokemon tower to kill someone who's already dead. Oh and also beat up a bunch of fodder trainers that have no reason to be here. This is giving Johto vibes. Though the pokemon aren't single digit leveled, which kinda sets it apart from Johto's fodder spam a bit.
Once I got the pokeflute, I decided to catch myself a snorlax for my 5th team member. I named it after the iconic fridge, the Xbox series X. Ofc that's more than 10 letters, so I had to shorten it to "Series X"
After making it through the gauntlet of fodder trainers, I reached Fuschia city. In Koga's gym is where I first saw a trainer actually switch pokemon. However, these switches were fucking stupid and unneccessary, which led to the trainers still being fodder. Onto koga himself? He was fodder. I swept him with a Lvl 34 hypno. It's worth noting his ace is lvl 43, and the rest of his pokemon range from lvls between 37-39. This was probably the easiest gym leader i've faced yet. I'm really not buying the lie that this is somehow a difficult game when so far this game has been easier than X and Y. The only difficult part of this game so far is trying to deal with the clunkiness and slowness of everything, which can be easily solved with emulator speedup.
I entered the safari zone. Finding this HM was utter hell. Why did they hide an important HM in the middle of bumfuck nowhere? why did they lock it under a sidequest with no indicators as to where it could be hidden? why is it in the one place that has a timer? this is horrible game design. I had to use google for a lot of things in pokemon red (imagine what this game was like when it first released!), but this has to be the most egregious example. After getting surf, I taught it to my already very powerful snorlax.
On the way to the Seafoam Islands, my Ivysaur evolved into a Venusaur. However, I decided to backtrack because I remembered that I completely forgot that I needed to fight Sabrina and team rocket. Venusaur probably won't be useful for sabrina, but I intend to beat giovanni's ass with it twice.
Entering the silph co. rocket fodder emporium, I swept every trainer with my graveler. Gary proved once again to be the only difficult battle anywhere in this tower, and that's once again because I forgot to heal before his fight. I swept giovanni with my graveler's earthquake. I thought maybe i'd need venusaur for Giovanni's fight but I was wrong because even with a lucky poison proc early into the fight he only got my graveler to half hp by the time his 4 pokemon were dead. How the fuck does this guy lead a criminal organization.
Entering the sabrina fight I was promised a difficult fight. It took 2 attempts. All it took was quite literally the smallest hint of strategy to win this fight. If this is the peak? I have no hope for the future fights.
I entered the seafoam islands. It's random encounter and boulder puzzle hell. I could just use repels but they dont auto-renew in this gen so it's more trouble than it's worth. The boulder puzzle was fun. I missed the great ball on the articuno twice and failed pitifully at catching it. And then I died because that articuno also happened to be the hardest fight I have faced up to this point. Realizing I had no interest in catching articuno anyways, I decided to head directly to cinnabar island.
I did the pokemon mansion stuff, did the blaine puzzle, and… I swept Blaine with a graveler who was 3 levels down.
Onto Giovanni.
I enter giovanni's gym, Venusaur in hand, ready to see what the 8th gym has to offer. Ready to see if this pushover main villain has what it takes to not be a pushover for the 3rd time in a row. And then he was a pushover for the 3rd time in a row. I swept him with a lvl 38 venusaur. Keep in mind that his entire team is in their mid 40s and his ace is lvl 50. His nidoking and nidoqueen still had fucking poison sting. This game being this fucking easy is infuriating. I thought that coming into the fight underleveled would give it a fair bit of extra challenge but I guess knowing basic fucking type matchups is enough.
I meet Gary by victory road again. I end up taking a loss to his alakazam. Fair, considering my highest level pokemon is 10 levels down on his alakazam. I did a bit of grinding and made a new strategy, beating gary's ass again.
I went through victory road and fought the elite 4. they were all pushovers except for lance, who took me a 2nd try. Lance was a surprisingly hard and fun fight.
And now here we are. The champion, Gary. This fight was very hard and took me 4 tries. This is among the only genuinely difficult fight in the game, despite the fact that all 3 of my losses came from that damn exeggutor abusing gen 1 sleep mechanics. But despite this, I beat him with a team of 5 pokemon who were 20 levels down. Here are screenshots of my team.

the oddish was only there to use cut. How would I rate my experience with this game? 5/10 PROS: Great region design fairly diverse amount of options, especially for a gameboy game great rival CONS: Extremely (and i mean extremely) easy. Definitely easier than x and y. the only fights that weren't piss easy were the gary fights, the lance fight, and the sabrina fight. and even then they were still quite easy. Extremely slow. Without emulator speedup i'd have died of old age before finishing this game. especially in regards to grinding. Quality of life is a dead art to these developers. everything felt super clunky to do. all of the quality of life features pokemon is known for only came in future generations.

Fire Red Z, Part 4: Thunder
Last time, on Fire Red Z! Lyle prepared to head out of Cerulean City after being brutally humbled by the gym leader there. Now, Lyle heads south, to Saffron City, to face the gym leader there!
Hm? What do you mean the guards won’t let me pass?
Guess I’ll head to Vermilion instead...
After making it past some Rocket chump, I made my way to Route 5. I caught Catnip the Meowth and dropped off Fennel at the daycare after evolving him all the way to Beedrill. Then, it was time to train.
Many Pidgey, Oddish, and Meowth died to bring my team up to about level 20. You see, I went down to Route 6 and found the trainers there a bit harder than I was expecting. Unfortunately, I misjudged how much damage a Meowth could do and lost Wisteria.
We picked up Fennel from daycare, dropped him in the box, then headed back down Route 6 through the Underground Passage, picking up Dandelion the Oddish and beating up anyone who got in our way.
When I got to Vermilion City, I heard the SS Anne was in town, so I decided to go pay it a visit. After I caught a Diglett in Diglett’s Cave, of course.
Fighting all the trainers on the ship was excellent practice, boosting up nearly everyone, but especially Wheat and Dandelion thanks to all the water types on board. Dandelion evolved into Gloom and we went to get Cut from the captain.
But first we had to take on Green. Unfortunately for him, his team was underleveled compared to mine and I had type advantage on his entire team. Ginger one shot both Pidgeotto and Charmeleon, then Catnip and Hemlock cleaned up Kadabra and Raticate, respectively.
After we waved goodbye to the SS Anne, we headed to the PC to switch up the team for the upcoming gym challenge. I knew it was all electric types, which meant that Ginger would have a field day. But caution outweighed my confidence, so Willow was switched out for Potato the Diglett.
(I also made a trip back to Pewter City to buy the ‘outrageously priced’ Magikarp and named it Lotus. She stayed in the box until after the gym challenge.)
We headed east, to Route 11, to take on all the trainers there and bring Potato up to a more reasonable level (which ended up being 23). We also caught a new Ekans I named Oleander, but this ain’t about him.
And so we headed back to Vermilion City, making one last stop at the pokemart to make sure everything was stocked up, then the pokemon center to get everyone in fighting shape. After the disaster at Cerulean I wanted everything to be perfect.
Catnip cut down the tree blocking the gym and we began the gym challenge. First, I knocked out all the gym trainers, getting Potato an extra level while Ginger evolved into Graveler.
Ginger led the team into the final battle, spamming Magnitude with abandon. Which worked great and one hit everything Lt. Surge sent out. Thunder Badge acquired!
Now we’re headed back to Cerulean City, hopefully getting Lotus some levels along the way as we make for Rock Tunnel and Lavender Town beyond. Who knows what waits for us ahead on our journey across the Kanto region...
Oh, wait, I do! See you next time!

I honestly thought I wouldn’t like Let’s Go: Eevee at all, but for what it was (a light-hearted, casual remake of Yellow) it was actually pretty fun.
Pokemon Yellow was not only my first Pokemon game, it was the first video game I remember playing.  So it has special significance to me.  Going through the journey of Yellow with these new graphics and updated gameplay actually had me feeling super nostalgic, and I thoroughly enjoyed what I played of it.
Sadly, like so many other games I played last year, I didn’t get to finish it, as two other games I was really looking forward to came out in the same month and I got distracted.  I could say I’ll go back to it (is there an echo in here?) but let’s be honest, I probably won’t.
