you land your blade before you can make sense of the splash in the shallows. the silver pierces the silken fin, the water turning a faint pink.

you first feel shock; shock that you made your mark, then triumph. until you lift your gaze from the glistening scales to the lean body, rising from a supple throat to a cut jaw, higher and higher, to seafoam eyes.

he glares at you. bares his teeth, revealing two sharp fangs. but it doesn’t take away from his beauty. dark hair, wet under the sun, traced with hues of jade that ripple through his tail.

a siren.

you can’t fully comprehend the weight of your capture. he’s larger than you, even. the netting that tangles his body, crossed over pale skin and sinewy muscle, doesn’t look strong enough to let you approach.

“who are you?” you breathe.

he responds with a lash, spraying you with seawater and scratching your cheek with hooked fingers. the salt burns. desire curls in you and you sink the blade just a bit deeper, pinning him in place.

a throaty sound escapes him. it reminds you of something vicious and yet musical like an oceanic melody.

honey hazes your mind. beautiful, you think. he’s so beautiful.

rather than letting him go, though, this strange new desire only makes you move closer. you lick the blood dripping down your lips and smile, feeling your heart beat lushly.

he eyes you warily, the tail lashing in warning.

“who are you,” you press one more time. your heart aches.

is this a siren’s compulsion?

“rin.” he snarls the word, in that hypnotic tone you don’t recognize. despite it, he faces you with a foaming mouth, looking two seconds from lunging for you.

longing fills you for this creature. you wonder if that silky skin tastes like sea minerals; if a kiss would result in a pearl.

“rin,” you repeat softly, “I think I’d like to keep you.”
