like. 3rd life - two of joels deaths were to burning/lava he had his house burnt down around him and the only people loyal to him were the fucking wolves while ETHO burned to death 3 TIMES he had his home burnt down 3 GODDAMN TIMES (being alerted to this by burning wolves twice btw.) but he had friends at his back he had dogwarts even if he died digging his own grave on their grounds. big themes here are obviously fire+burning but also loyalty and recklessness

last life - joel, the first red the lone wolf he has allies but theyre tenous, superficial theyre borne out of fear or desperation or lack of options while etho has arguably THE most solid and reliable alliance in the entire game and even after losing bdubs he has cleo he has TRUST. he barely kills anyone and yet has a fearsome reputation while joel is one of the few people to see through that reputation and not be blinded by the past and literally kills etho. burning comes back but just for joel, and loyalty + recklessness is there for them both. thye learn from last life but learn VERY DIFFERENT THINGS

double life - the culmination of all their similsrities and differences, the universe quite literally binds them together until htey perish to STRENGTHEN themes of trust and futility and desolation. they die twice, once to a preventable accident, once to a joke gone wrong, and then finally, finally, they die together because of their want to stay together with the person they trust AND THEY DIE TO FIRE THEY DIE TO BETRAYAL. the ship burns everything burns indeed

um tldr. joel and etho being soulmtaes was foresgadowed since day fucking one despite being entirely improv whixh im taking as a genuine sign from the universe that this is the best sereis ever maybe
