From Eindhoven to Gouna
Well, people that was a bit of a short turn over for us.
If Cubs (my partner in SquashSite Crime) was able to have a direct flight from Newcastle to Hurghada on Monday, giving him a day of rest on Tuesday, I had booked a flight from Paris on Monday afternoon to Cairo arriving late evening. In theory, it would allow me to pack my Gouna stuff from my room in Cairo Monday night, to drive nicely on the Tuesday morning to Gouna, a nice 6h drive which I was looking forward to.
Why you may ask would you drive 6 hours when you can actually fly there in 1 hour? Well, first you have got to take a taxi to airport, that’s one hour, then wait 2 hours for the flight (internal flight is still 2h in Egypt), then 1 hour flight, then 1 hour drive from Hurghada to Gouna... That’s about the same, and at least in the car I can sleep. Ok, my driver decided on Monday that he would double his price for next day journey, so had from Paris to find another driver. But that was sorted nicely. Man was on time and it would have been perfect if I didn’t forget a bag as we were about 20m away from my room, had to turn back and had a car broken down on the way that cost us about 1 extra hour drive! Arriving finally in Gouna, as nice as ever, we are back in Ancient Sands which we made the opening of a few years back... And don’t miss our first day here if you didn’t read it already..
Last night, a nice meal at Moods, our “food” sponsor, bless them, Gouna wouldn’t be the same without them cooking and caring for us from day one...
Today, familiar faces at the squash centre, Tamer Mamdouh, my personal angel, also Squash Centre Manager and Masters Master! And the refs, bless them, still smiling at me, as it’s early days... They probably will hate me by the end of the week as usual...
Ready, Steady.. Let’s play squash...

SquashSite Specials
There’s a lot going on in the Squash World, and we try to cover all the major happenings with stories on the site.
But there’s lots going on in Social Media, the Press and elsewhere, and not everybody has time to trawl through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google News and elsewhere to keep on top of what’s happening.
So, on SquashSite Specials we’ll try to post all the interesting stuff that might not justify a post on the home page, to save you some trawling !!

Men’s Semis: Top seeds Coll and Willstrop deny former champs
Men’s top seeds Paul Coll and James Willstrop - both making their first appearance at the event - beat former champions Daryl Selby and Alan Clyne in contrasting semi-finals to guarantee a new Edinburgh Sports Club Open men's champion.
[2] James Willstrop (Eng) 3-1 [5] Alan Clyne (Sco) 16-14, 2-11, 11-9, 11-9 (64m) [1] Paul Coll (Nzl) 3-0 [3] Daryl Selby (Eng) 11-4, 11-7, 11-2 (36m)
Willstrop took over an hour to deny Clyne, the 2016 and 2017 champion, and a brutal first game accounted for half of that time. Having taken it 16-14 Willstrop 'hit a bit of a wall' in the second as Clyne levelled 11-2. The third was again close, and when Willstrop took it 11-9 it felt decisive and so it proved as the Englishman closed out the fourth to end a run of three Scottish champions.
"That first game was so tough," admitted James, "there wasn't a lot I could do in the second, but coming back to take the third was crucial in the end. Winning that gave me a boost of impetus and confidence, but it's always tough on club courts like this. I need to recover now, whoever I play in the final it's going to be a tough one."
Selby has won the event five times and is well accustomed to ESC's court five, but tonight Kiwi Coll, the new world #6, took an early lead in the opening game and held Selby's courtcraft in check as he won in straight game, accelerating through the third.
"It's great fun playing here, the crowd really gets involved even if they're not on my side," said Paul. "It's always a tough match with Daryl but I was pleased with how I played. I'm looking forward to playing James in the final, it's always a good clean and enjoyable but tricky match against him."
