I've replayed the original Spyro trilogy countless times but for some reason I've only replayed A Hero's Tail once? Maybe twice? I've definitely never 100%'d it, that's for sure, which is the plan for this playthrough. It's a stellar title, downright gorgeous for the PS2 and holds up pretty well.

This was also a game I played a LOT as a kid; back when I didn't understand the concept of save states and just restarted the game each session. I'm still weary going into some side missions, funny enough, because of how difficult I found them at that age. They're a little challenging at times but nothing too bad. Overall, I'm surprised Spyro didn't continue down this gameplay route for future titles because it truly was just that evolutionary step for the series. Less level-focused and having more open realms with different areas connected, gems are used as currency more often rather than a collectable... It's different but it still feels like Spyro.

It's an underrated entry in my book. Everybody talks about the original trilogy, the embarrassment that Enter the Dragonfly was, and the reboot trilogy but I barely hear any appreciation for AHT. Hope that changes someday.

I never knew until recently that originally the soundtrack of Spyro 5: A Hero's Tail was almost fully composed by Guy Cockcroft, but then with like, a couple months left to go until release, the devs basically said "We don't like your soundtrack, sorry bud, we're replacing you" and then quickly brought on like four other guys to replace the entire game's soundtrack at light speed

And despite the time crunch, these guys absolutely killed it. Like sorry to Guy Cockcroft but with his unused soundtrack having recently been revealed I have to agree that it just does not feel like it fits the game. It's good music, competent, but doesn't fit the vibe of the levels and world. The actual soundtrack they went with on the other hand? There's not a stinker in there. Every single track in the game, and I mean EVERY one, is catchy as all hell. I never would have guessed in a million years that it was some hastily rushed OST quickly whipped up by random replacement composers because it absolutely slays. It's one of the most enjoyable and iconic parts of the entire game for me. Like that game would not have been the same without its music.

So, a person on Youtube by the name of “Ebbe” did some digging around in AHT’s textures, and managed to find what seems to be some beta design textures for Flame and Ember!

my redesign of ember, based heavily on her original concept from spyro: enter the dragonfly!

ever since i saw ember’s original colors, i’ve been itching to do a take on her inspired by them. if you haven’t seen it, the concept they initially had was a trading card in spyro orange:

(by the way, shoutout to the enter the dragonfly documentary by mr. fo1 for pointing this out! this screenshot is also from that vid)

i honestly dig these colors; i think they fit her name a lot better! still, though, i tried to take inspiration from her colors in a hero’s tail a little - for example, i gave her heterochromia, with one of her eyes being the color they went with in that game.

when planning this out, i wanted to give her a more distinct silhouette from spyro while still keeping some traits from her AHT look. she’s a bit chubbier than spyro and flame in-game, so i used that as a starting point for her overall body type. i gave her longer wings too, just to set her apart more. her face shape in that game always really stood out to me however, so i tried super hard to nail it down! 

every other change comes from my interpretation of the pixel art - except for her spots and transparent wings, the latter of which are inspired by these baby dragons from year of the dragon:

is it bad that I like Skylanders....I mean, the tv show. i watched it with my friend and we love the concept inside of the show...

still love Spyro classic/regitded, AHT and LOS/

for spyro 4 idkk what all I want but it would be cool to have more underground and underwater levels. Maybe spyro could have a dig ability, could be cool to have some hidden objects and have more for spyro to learn. Playable Hunter would be nice too, when I was a kid I expected it in yotd and we got it in aht but you know. hunter is just my faaaave

Mod Clio: Anon, those are fantastic ideas! It would be so cool to have Spyro learning some new moves/abilities and digging for treasure would be super cool! Oh and YES more Hunter please. I think the Hunter levels were some of my favorites in AHT lol

I finally got an emulator so I can play a bunch of games from my childhood and I'm considering streaming some of them while I play. Would anyone be interested in watching that?

Atm I've got a gamecube/wii emulator and a ps2 one, so any game recs for those consoles are welcome (I would've gone for xbox, that was the console I had as a kid, but the games I wanted are rlly hard to find safe xbox roms for)! Currently trying to go for 100% on spyro a hero's tail because it was my all time fav childhood game, but I never actually 100% cleared it! Won't be hard, I know the first half of the game inside and out lmao but it is good fun.

Also considering trying some low-key speedruns of it (they won't be official bc aht speedruns don't allow emulation) so if I go for that I'll probably do some grinding streams too.
