Spylights introducing self-titled debut EP.

Spylights is a band from New Orleans, led by charismatic singer and songwriter Vincent Giovanni. Their sound is a fresh, direct, and unapologetic take on alternative music, tipping the hat to rock, indie, and everything in between. Recently, the group took to the web to release their first-ever project. Their new EP, self-titled, features 7 songs. Each track on the set list explores a different set of ideas, giving this EP a very colorful and eclectic twist. However, in spite of the diverse feel of this release, Spylights managed to achieve a very cohesive sound.

The EP kicks off with an introductory track, “State of the World Distress.” This is a perfect mood setter, allowing listeners to get a sense for the sonic aesthetics of this release. One of my favorite songs on this release, “Betty Fang,” actually blurs the lines between post-hardcore and progressive metal, sort of like a timeless combination between Circa Survive and Dream Theatre, with excellent guitar solos and unique textures.

“Constellations” is also another amazing highlight. The sound is huge, with guitars reaching astonishing lows and silky highs. If you are a fan of artists like DIIV and Russian Circle you are definitely going to dig this particular song. I love the dynamic range between the verses and the choruses, with so much sonic variety.

“False Walls” is one of the EP’s most melodic tracks. The sound tips the hat off to bands such as Thrice (especially their later works) as well as Taking Back Sunday, making for an experimental, yet melodic and diverse tone.

In addition to the excellent tones, I also love the overall sound quality. Everything is massive, yet the parts aren’t competing with one another. There is a well-defined sense of space for every element in the mix, from the pounding drums and the massive bass tones, to the guitars and the vocals.
