Louise's video: Youtube Culture
Louise discussed about Youtube Gatherings etc. I agree with her completely that there could be better and more efficient ways to do things. I have only been to one, Summer in the City 2013. Although I ended up waiting 4-5 hours for Louise, Zoe and Tanya then being told their line got cut off so it was a complete waste of time, I did enjoy talking to the people in line and making friends. We all had something in common and we got to share our social media profiles, and check each others youtube out. And although 75% of the time i spent at Summer In the City consisted of waiting in lines, the other 25% i spent watching pannels with Jack and Finn and Bertie, Ben Cook etc. There was also cool stalls we could go to.
What saddened me was that the Youtubers spent the majority of their time all in a room that was blocked off. I could understand why, Caspar came out to innocently get an icecream and was innocently bombarded by viewers, screaming gasping and shouting. From the Youtubers perspective I can understand why they would stay inside. However, from the viewers perspective I can also understand why they would do this. We spend hours upon hours watching these people, therefore we think we know them better than we do where as we are complete strangers to them. Also as we haven't seen said youtuber, if they suddenly come out the instant reaction is to be shocked, and to want to meet them. Unfortunately this gets out of control many times.
I think with more organisation Summer in the City could be AMAZING. Just making sure there arn't people in line for meetups/meet and greets waiting that won't get to meet the people and just waste their time and money.
I would definatly go to another Youtube gathering like this, I found it so much fun even if I didn't get to meet many Youtubers. I think the best things they did were the main stage performances, but Zoe etc wern't on the mainstage last year. This way even if you don't get to meet them atleast you get to see them on stage
The funny thing is when you watch viewers vlogs from conventions they look like they are having a great time the majority of it, where as from youtubers you see masses of fans screaming trying to meet them. I can see why Louise finds it difficult.
Anyways, Rant over. :)
