The Good Smells Of Childhood
The Good Smells Of Childhood
I was always a “noticing” kind of person. Good smells always put me in a certain frame of mind. Some were cozy, some exciting, some, downright appetite provoking.
This is just a sort of reminiscence of the ones I remember, in no particular order.
The smell of the people around me was most likely some of my first memories. Mom always smelled of cigarettes, coffee and on special occasions when I…

Understanding The "M 7" Designation In The 1940 Census
Understanding The “M 7″ Designation In The 1940 Census
I recently found a 1940 census record that listed the man as married but that designation was crossed out and a 7 was inserted instead. It occurred to me that other people might be wondering what it meant too, so I did a search and found Understanding the 1940 Census at Archives.com. That correction indicates the man is married but that his spouse isn’t living with him.
In 1935 Rex Stevenson…

My Favorite Fork
For whatever reason, my mom and dad used their wedding silver and china when we were kids. I don’t know if they just didn’t have the money to go out and buy inexpensive dinnerware, but all I can remember was using that, or dishes that came from a gas station or out of a box of laundry soap.
As you know, silver service of the expensive kind was quite heavy and unwieldy which meant that it was a…

Throw Back Thursday - When Greg Worked As A Deckhand
Throw Back Thursday – When Greg Worked As A Deckhand
I [Greg Wilkerson] worked on this vessel as a deckhand in ’88/’89 when it was the passenger ferry that did the early runs to PSNS from the downtown Port Orchard, WAdock. Occasionally, I would work on the Retsil and Thurow as well. I also got to work on the Spirit of ’76 and every once in a while the Eagle. Each one was so different and special in their own ways. And each Captain I worked with…

IS THERE A DISORDER IN MY MITOCHONDRIAL DNA THAT CAUSED MY FIBROMYALGIA?
IS THERE A DISORDER IN MY MITOCHONDRIAL DNA THAT CAUSED MY FIBROMYALGIA?
It was important to me to have my DNA tested now so it was “banked” and might be a source of future studies for my health. Today, I read an article that poses the question, “Is Fibromyalgia A Mitochondrial Disorder?“. I maintain that I have had fibromyalgia all of my life. I may not have always known it, but I felt the effects when I was very young and they have never ever gone away.
While I…

8 iPhone Apps You Didn't Know You Needed
8 iPhone Apps You Didn’t Know You Needed
How many times have you said, “I wish there was an app for that”? Here are 8 of the most useful ones on my iPhone. Please leave your suggestions to add to this list.
Roboform
I don’t think I could function properly if I didn’t have Roboform as my app for remembering logins. I know there are others, but to me, Roboform is still #1. While it’s great at remembering logins, it’s also extremely handy…

Give The Gift Of Audible Books
Give The Gift Of Audible Books
As time goes by, it’s getting harder and harder for me to sit and hold a book of any size because the arthritis in my hands makes it very difficult to do so. I have some audio books in my library already, but I’m seriously considering adding more to my collection via Audible. One of my most prized collections is the Tuesday Club Murders by Agatha Christie and read by Joan Hickson.

Fashion Week in Washington State 1956
Fashion Week in Washington State 1956
Here I am with our neighbor Patty Jones as we sport our latest fashions right out of Patty’s suitcase. As you can see, the suitcase is also of vintage age as was the falling-down old chicken coop behind our house on Dennis Street in Tumwater, Washington.
I don’t know what ever happened to Patty Jones. Maybe she moved away, there’s just no way of knowing. She was obviously older than me. She must…

Happy Pi Day Birthday Will Knox Yates
Happy Pi Day Birthday Will Knox Yates
One hundred and twenty-three years ago today, a second baby boy was born to Jim and Cerilda Breedlove Yates in Oregon County, Missouri. His name was William Knox Yates and he was my grandfather. (Cerilda and Jim Yates are seated; Jim’s sister Myra is standing).
I don’t have any pictures of my grandpa Yates as a small boy. I think the earliest one I have is the hunting photo I posted (see link…

SHOCKED TUMWATER GIRL FORCED TO BE PHOTOGRAPHED WITH CLOWN IN GROCERY STORE
Or, the short title should read, “I may be smiling, but I was really mortified”. I think this photo was taken in either 1962 or 1963. It was taken at Southgate Market in Tumwater, Washingtonand if the clown is any of my schoolmate’s father or other male relative, I’m sorry, but I just found this photo ambush so embarrassing. I don’t even know what it was all for. You can see me holding my arms…

How To Change Your Feed Title and Description
How To Change Your Feed Title and Description
It took me a whole day to find how to do it, but I finally found the way to change my RSS feed title/description to the way I wanted it to read. When I was just beginning to optimize and publicize this blog, I mistakenly thought it would only be going out to subscribers who read it in readers and not realizing that a feed can be used by email subscription services like MailChimp as well.

1912 Washington State Gun Fanatics
1912 Washington State Gun Fanatics
Gun Fanaticism Or Just Practicality?
Admittedly, I don’t really know what these men really felt about their guns and how ‘fanatical’ they might have been about using them. Anything I say here about them comes from my own views of how my family used their rifles, how they talked about them, and our family history with guns.
First, a little background on the people in this picture and where it was…
