Spring in the Cheat River Canyon.
From top: lowbush blueberry (Vaccinium pallidum); the pendulous green flowers of striped maple (Acer pensylvanicum); sweet white violet (Viola blanda), which loves cool, moist forests; wild strawberry (Fragaria virginiana), which has been hybridized with a South American species to produce commercial strawberries; marsh blue violet (Viola cucullata), an elegant, gregarious violet found growing in seeps and along streambanks; smooth Solomon's seal (Polygonatum biflorum); great white trillium (Trillium grandiflorum); a West Virginia white (Pieris virginiensis) sipping nectar from a sweet white violet; and broadleaf toothwort (Cardamine diphylla), the larval host plant for the West Virginia white.
Note: this hauntingly beautiful butterfly, a flitting ghost in Appalachia's April forests, is in serious decline because it confuses invasive garlic mustard for its host plant, Cardamine. Garlic mustard is toxic to its larvae. Another example of how an invasive species can wreak havoc on the vital lifecycles of our native ecosystems.

What is a jelly? In your patreon
Jelly is referring to literal jellies and jams! I have fruit trees / bushes in my yard and sometimes there's a large batch, and I send jars of that to patrons.

Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough June 2024
The head iconic, the cliffs tall,
Covered in white, Gannets galore,
Kittiwakes too, with their soothing call,
Guillemots, Razorbills and more,
You have to examine the crevices for the sea clown,
Exotic billed Puffins that can hide,
Entranced by elegant Fulmars one could never frown,
As in the wind they effortlessly glide,
Tree Sparrows chatter, Swallows and House Martins attend the nest,
Short-eared and Barn Owl a captivating sight,
Seeing which can excite you best,
Yellow, pink and white meadows awakened by sunlight,
The sea an uplifting shade of blue,
Like seeing a marsh orchid, in the water is a treasure,
The intimate moment to have a Grey Seal stare at you,
Painted Lady and other butterflies add to the pleasure,
Silver Y, Sedge Warbler and Whitethroat,
Chiffchaff, Stonechat and Reed Bunting bringing more elation,
So relaxed I could almost float,
Vising Bempton Cliffs and Flamborough I feel a gratifying sensation,

Earlier this afternoon along Little Laurel Run in the virgin hemlock forest at Coopers Rock State Forest. The mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia) is at peak bloom in this area, along with the mapleleaf viburnum (Viburnum acerifolium), one of Central Appalachia's most beautiful shrubs. And when the mapleleaf viburnum is in bloom, so too will be the speckled wood lily (Clintonia umbellulata), Canada mayflower (Maianthemum canadense), and false Solomon's seal (Maianthemum racemosum). And if you were lucky enough to have all four of these native plants growing in your shade garden, you could call your life complete. :-) One thing you probably won't have growing in your shade garden, unless it happens to have a rotting hemlock log or stump, is hemlock varnish shelf (Ganoderma tsugae), one of the most distinctive fungi of Central Appalachia. But if you did have hemlock varnish shelf growing in your garden, then you would also likely have a few pleasing fungus beetles (Megalodacne heros) foraging about and raising babies - these adorable bugs have a lifecycle entirely dependent on Ganoderma shelf fungus.

A friend gave me tubers last year. They went moldy in the bag before she could get them to me, but I cleaned them and planted them anyway. Turns out, something was good in there after all!
