The first of many references to this appears in Act 2, Scene 4 of Henry IV, Part 1, in which Falstaff is recounting the tale of his fighting off a horde of bandits. Eventually fed up with his lies, Hal demands that he come clean and admit that he could not properly recount the events of the night because he was inebriated. After much hemming and hawing, he sheepishly confesses:
